#not that it’s bad to have a predictable plot
One way to have "diverse" characters in you story without sounding preachy or woke is to avoid making the antogonist a strawman of whatever political faction you consider """"evil""""""
For example, if my character is a trans man, there is no way, the antagonist would be Mr. or Mrs. Transphobe.
That´ll be boring and predictable.
The absolute best way to do diversity (if you must) is to write a character first, then just make them black, trans, gay, or whatever. And yes, to have the antagonist be a character also that isn't just a stand in for homophobia or racism or whatever. Boring and predictable, like you said.
I remember after The Butler became a hit, Lee Daniels said he wanted his next movie to be an action film with a gay male protagonist. The way he described it made it sound like a straight forward, typical action movie, just with the main character having a male love interest instead of a female one. It never got made, as far as I know, but I think back on it from time to time and wonder if that could have been a "diverse" movie done right. Where the focus is on the plot and the characters and the action and the diversity stuff is just one facet of the character, instead of literally the entire character and the main focus of the movie. Sadly, these days, it's almost impossible to trust that anything with "diverse" characters isn't going to be filled with woke writing and the same diversity committee approved plot points we see in basically everything these days. One of the reasons I'm still mad that Netflix canceled Archive 81 is because it was a series with a black lead who was a fully realized character, and his race never came into the story at all. Yes, the rich white man ended up being the bad guy, but there was nothing racial about it. It was just a casting decision. That character could have been any race or either gender and the character would have been exactly the same. Same with the protagonist. To me, that's what writing should be. Unless the story is specifically about a certain race or gender (ie, you probably shouldn't write a race-neutral MLK biopic) then the race or gender of the characters shouldn't come into play within the story at all.

the amount of faith i have in the sonic movie creators is incredible but also SO deserved. like oh, sonic's a free spirit so the first movie's probably going to end with him and the humans parting ways and "being better for having known each other"? nah bitch, they're gonna adopt him. okay tails getting adopted in the sequel is a given but knuckles is kind of a lone wolf so- NO WE'RE ADOPTING HIM TOO. these people understand my heart's desire even when i don't. at this point i could go for shadow either getting adopted or not but i have complete faith in his grief and trauma being heartbreakingly addressed. what would it be like if every movie respected their audience like this.

sorry but when you stop and think about it it's honestly pretty crazy that the writers sat down to plot out s3 and decided to go with "well first we'll have Jamie confess to Roy that his dad made him lose his virginity in the red light district when he was a 14, thereby adding a multitude of complicated childhood-sexual-abuse-by-proxy layers onto the already established canon that his father is a physically and emotionally abusive sack of shit. THEN later on we will have Jamie mentally doom spiral at the sheer prospect of being in the same stadium as him, only to, in the same episode, go ahead and decide to forgive him! strictly for purposes of his own healing and happiness, of course. And finally we will show Jamie reaching out to his dad to see how he's doing. it sure has been a while! :) oh and by the way, his dad just so happens to be in rehab already, currently working on himself and cheering Jamie on. Isn't that great? I'm sure the audience will love it, what could possibly not add up about this? :) :)"
and by crazy I do indeed mean bad.

not seperating raj and wayne until like The Last Possible Moment in s2 was a truly baffling decision. like i thought the season was leading into wayne getting eliminated and raj having to deal with both his boyfriend and his best friend (his biggest support system basically) being gone. I thought it was going to challenge raj by having him stick to his morals even as the bigger force of mk and julia tried to get him away from that. i really had hope

oh waaaaah jjk sucks because my fave died!! okay then go back to children’s shows or something where no one ever dies at all.
since the beginning of the series it was established that being a sorcerer was incredibly dangerous and ended with most sorcerers having short lives. it’s one of the first things discussed by the characters.
it’s a dark series and that means people will die. “people dying = bad and predictable writing!!!” it’s a fantasy series and you aren’t the one fucking writing it. it’s not even complete and you don’t actually even know who’s dead or not or who will actually stay dead. they haven’t even fully revealed what yuuji’s team’s plan is yet.
like…if you don’t like that then take your ass back to bnha or grow tf up.

listen, side order is. a fantastic dlc! a fantastic gameplay experience! its great! i love getting more little pieces of world building and character building n shit!!
but i gotta be honest. the writing (both in the dlc itself and in media that has come after) has really started to ruin pearl and marina as characters for me and that makes me awfully sad

i do honestly think that like. the reason steve's torture scene is so undercut is because it is a torture scene. like they didn't WANT it to be hit heavily they didn't want to have to cut between relatively normal for the show scenarios back to steve and robin locked in an unreachable facility getting beaten and drugged and about to get their fingernails ripped off with the knowledge that in the end unless they're saved they're going to die. Because that is deeply tragic. so they have to make the jokes and make it lighter than it seems not only because the plot needs it but like the AUDIENCE needs it and the CHARACTERS need it... like yes the show does not take so many character's real life suffering seriously because for some reason lasting effects and trauma only exist to be taken advantage of by the plot or if you're the billed star or something but steve also in canon is the one who didn't let himself BE A Guy Who Was Just Tortured. he was a guy who was just beat up a little. and like they're scared but they're not too scared because they have to have hope because they are two people who have never had to rely on hope before in order to survive...
but also!! tbh i can't. help but think how much of a critical hit gut wrench it would've been if they had decided to commit to the darker theme of it and how it juxtaposes against the whole Bright Neon Light Palm Fronds And 80s Pop and how 30 minutes later they're standing among a group of children and no one even realises anything is out of the ordinary i think it would've accessed an actual emotional impact and depth the duffers seem to stumble upon by accident and never of their own volition </3 to cut from the concurrently running scenes to an 18 year old boy we know is completely innocent and completely telling the truth that he was just in the wrong place and didn't realise how serious it all was who was getting tortured and it be something serious. and his 17 year old coworker who just had to listen to it all to the point where she thought they dragged his dead body in to lay next to her. and in a way it's somehow MORE tragic which was not their intention at all that it was so lightly handled even though we the audience know it's somethings deeply upsetting it all just gets washed away in the face of Life goes on even on tv... sigh.
#🍦#anyway#also unrelated i saw a post abt like someone commenting on the entire insane patriotism and the red scare stuff and maybeppl just commented#at the time THEY DID trust me.... it is one of the biggest criticisms of the show itself and a lot of people actually hated s3 bc of it 😭#well like. me too. not that i'd seen it at the time i just remember eveurhing being like . said#anyway the way this show handles trauma actually gives me a headache lol#bc it's purely on case by case and yeah i know they can't just handle everyone's particular traumas but ugh. well you know what im saying#i think if they acknowledged the things that happened to steve they would also have to acknowledge it was never intended to have gravity#it can't be abandonment if there was never intention it can't be something they missed bc they don't see the something#he will get beaten every single season (barring the first) with no repercussion bc his like#humanity is not a right he is just some guy. it would also lose all the comedy to it that was established for 4 seasons#like oh it's not funny anymore and he's not the fun guy anymore because it's sad and that's not FAIR i don't think#bc trauma doesn't change everything about you and shouldn't change people's perception of you that's . fucked#and i think it's wild a show that attempts multiple times to go OVER these traumas will only ever land it sloppily bc i don't believe#they're doing it well intentionedly LOL it's for plot which is well fine it's a narrative but it means when it#lacks it's upsetting instead of the writing just being bad too#anyway... tangent . that also applies to like nancy and jonathan and stuff too . lucas and erica in s5 i imagine as well#though i shouldn't predict failure bc that's not very nice. to the characters .I just hate those men so much tbh tbh#sts

i finished that monsterfucker book btw. i was so disappointed because 600 pages for what. for a pathetic ruler and a human being who was written as if wearing crop tops and saying "rad" was a personality? granted the human was from 80s america so that has more to do with the author's limited scope of what people in the 80s were like i'm sure but even given that nothing fucking HAPPENed !

Tumblr media Tumblr media
i liked this! some aspects more than others. the premise was adorable, and the father-daughter relationship between bel and ange was cute as hell, but i wish we got to see more of it or at least more plot revolving around it
because the more, i guess... adventure/magic/politics parts of the plot just didn't land as much for me. i get that that's the genre so of course there has to be a Plot, and not just cute/funny moments of ange trying to get home and things getting in her way, but i think it would've been more compelling to me if the Plot circled the family element too
there was so much potential! like if bel had decided to return to adventuring earlier in the series, i feel like we could've had some great adventures of him traveling with ange and her party. and that not only keeps the family dynamic at the forefront, it would've presented the opportunity to delve more into how bel's disability might affect his return to adventuring
it does seem like bel traveling with ange is where the series will go next, but this doesn't really feel like a show that would get a second season. so if i want to find out i guess it's off to the light novels for me
but overall! kind of meh as a fantasy/adventure, but with some really cute and meaningful moments throughout. final ep especially was quite good!

What is with this trend of writers going around sabotaging their own stories once they gain success just to betray/hurt the fans, who are the reason their work was so successful in the first place…?
