If there's a plot of some kind, I'm normally game to writing old muses. Most of them didn't last long on tumblr for an unknown fandom or what not, which happens. Other's I moved to discord just haven't writen them in years but the servers are still active for OOC chats. My Jane was just a self writing challenge & to fuck with an old friend So I probably won't write her again. I drifted many of my female muses ages ago when I came out or just switched platforms. Though there are a few I'm just not interested in writing.

Just watched the Veep podcast trailer and I'm confused by TS's line about how the show forecasting things to come. I don't remember Veep predicting everything, rather it seemed to react to things (in some instances very well, so its nothing to be ashamed of). I worry they're either going to say Selina forecasted Trump or Kamala Harris and both those suggestions seem just ridiculous.

Yeah, I wasn't really sure about that line either...it could have just been a "dummy phrase" written for him by Kast Media as part of the fluffy promotional ad copy he and Matt Walsh were clearly reciting. Of course you are right, Anon, that Veep wasn't a predictive show in any way - Selina and her staff's particular brand of incompetence wasn't really anything like Trump's administration, and other similarities either mirrored things that were currently happening or happened in the past - but I can't say I have any faith in Kast Media's ability to dissect the political nuances of a show like Veep. There were a few very specific instances in the Mandel years where a joke on Veep did end up playing out in real life...the main one I remember is that Ted Cruz went on a weird rant about daylight savings time à la Jonah in S6, and there were a few others, but they were all one-off jokes that had nothing really to do with the overarching plot and anyway hardly constitute as "proof" that Veep forecasted things to come.

But this is also one of the risks with having a rewatch podcast led by cast members - sometimes the team who creates a television show get locked into one or two ideas about what their show is doing or what it's known for, and then those ideas are the only way they know how to talk about the show in public. For example, in the Mandel years, in every reunion fundraiser or joint interview, all Mandel et al could really talk about is creative insults for Jonah and how Veep was crazy and full of terrible people but couldn't out-crazy or out-terrible Trump. I do worry that Matt Walsh and Timony Simons will just kind automatically parrot that line of inquiry for the whole podcast, even though that kind of framing just really isn't relevant to what's going on or what the show is trying to explore during the Iannucci years.

I'm also suspicious of the podcast promising to bring on politicians/political strategists to talk about Veep, if only because The OC podcast promised us culture writers and sociologists to talk about that show's impact on pop culture, and as far as I am aware, nobody like that has come on the show. Although fwiw I think it would be much easier to book political strategists for this podcast because Veep was a genuinely popular show among that professional community...David Mandel did an interview with Pod Save America, for example, and I'm pretty sure multiple other strategists are on the record mentioning that they watched the show. I think even President Obama mentioned it once? (not that they will get Obama on this podcast, although that would be pretty incredible if they did.)

I do wonder about who they will have on guests more generally...I imagine they will try and get all the cast members on, from the main cast to supporting to guest stars. Of course I'm especially eager to hear from Reid Scott and Anna Chlumsky, if only because both of them are virtually silent on social media now and I am genuinely wondering how they are doing (all of RS's recent tweets were clearly posted by a social media manager, and he hasn't tweeted or Instagrammed anything promotional for the second Venom movie, which seems...weird.) I'd like to see the Veep costume designer come on, and of course writers and directors. If they can get Iannucci, that'd be huge, and I'd love for that to happen.

But I wonder if Kast Media's relentless obsession with interviews mean we'll get other random comedians and actors who've worked with the hosts and/or just love Veep. That's clearly what happened on The OC podcast...which was obviously hampered by the fact that its 3/4 of its core four don't seem interested in coming on (for now). But after they went through the parents and supporting cast, the guest list seems to have been reduced to "previous colleagues of Melinda Clarke and Rachel Bilson and anyone vaguely famous who loves The OC." Like, Tim Simons recently worked with Josh Schwartz on Looking for Alaska...are we going to have to listen to Josh Schwartz on the Veep pod? Ugh. They should just let Tim Simons and Matt Walsh talk to one another for some episodes. That's a huge problem with The OC podcast for me, that there hasn't been any space for the hosts to just breathe and talk without having to interview guests and do dumb trivia bits. Simons and Walsh actually know each other and worked together quite recently for nearly a decade, so Kast Media should get out of the way and not "over-produce" the show the way they are clearly doing on The OC pod (although that's possibly because Rachel Bilson is such a dud as a host).

NAME A RANDOM ROLEPLAY THAT STICKS OUT IN YOUR MEMORY — me n my friend ellie made this really cool group the summer before we left for uni which was loosely based on a concept mentioned mayb once in the divergent series, but it gave us loads of freedom to make it our own thing. it was called the fringe n it was like..... this dystopian society where people with different genes were cut off from the rest of society n lived in overrun slum cities where different groups had like, a monopoly over weapons, produce, etc.... my character jack was the leader of this lost-boy-esque tribe called the wolf pack who were hunters n used to run across the rooftops wearing the skins of animals they’d killed and engage in tribal rituals with sacrifices to the gods n shit. sounds lame but everyone there was so invested in their character arcs that it was a shame to see it go. but ! it kind of reached its end point so we blew it up w nukes n they all died. tragic.

This isn’t a very important post, especially when I should be doing drafts but if anyone has these faceclaims to go against any of mine, platonically, romantic, strangers, etc. HMU! (MESSAGES!) veep podcast reflections

I’ve made it through the first seven episodes of the pod—which includes the appearances by Tony Hale, Reid Scott, and Anna Chlumsky—so I feel like I’ve listened enough to have an opinion about it (if anyone else is actually listening to this podcast…if you are out there and actually listening/watching, please stop by my inbox.)

It’s aggressively fine. Nothing groundbreaking, but a reasonably enjoyable listen. The hosts are clearly professionals at being funny, and of course there’s plenty of lovely and entertaining behind-the-scenes information. I do hope they bring Armando Iannucci on (and I imagine they are trying to get JLD on as well, but she is of course very busy). It’s interesting to note the different interpersonal dynamics between various combinations of cast members. It’s also *very* obvious why Tim Simons jumped on the celebrity rewatch podcast craze…he’s a total fandom nerd! (I say this with great respect) He loves thinking about his favorite tv shows, he is clearly very Internet savvy, and he’s interested in politics, so it makes sense to me that he feels like the driving force behind this podcast. (it is very clear now that Tim Simons is absolutely the kind of person who would go look up fanfiction about the show he was on--which, btw, professional writers are legally prohibited from doing, but I guess actors aren’t.)

I like each episode opening with a recording of a political gaffe, and the trivia game has surprisingly not been as annoying as I normally find these cheesy bits. I don’t *love* the strict scene-by-scene recap of each week’s episode…it leads to interesting conversations and anecdotes, I guess, but too often we also get stuck on banal chatter like “okay what happens next? oh right yes, then Selina goes into her office and closes the door, and Gary and Sue have a conversation about X Y Z which was really funny because A B C” interspersed with all the “ums” and “ahs” of live speech. (Maybe this is a Kast Media thing, because they also do it on the OC Bitches podcast). Maybe there isn’t a good way to recap a tv episode scene by scene on air, though, especially if you aren’t going to air audio or video clips.

I have two qualms/issues with the pod, one kind of nitpicky, and the other more serious. First, I wish they talked more about the relationships between the different characters. Not just Dan and Amy—although obviously if this were MY podcast there would be a weekly segment on that front—but Selina and Amy, Selina and Dan, Selina and Gary…most of the “big” moments in each episode get dissected on a comedic and political front, but not necessarily on a narrative front…usually it’s the guests who end up providing insight on character relationships, like Anna Chlumsky talking about Amy’s relationship with Selina in the context of the fake miscarriage scene. (I can’t help but find it…interesting that the first mention of Dan and Amy’s particular *thing* came from one of the guests, Pete Grosz, who played Sidney Purcell—his episode was great). Maybe this will change as we move into the later seasons, though, since in S1 a lot of the character groundwork is still being laid.

My second, bigger qualm has to do with the podcast’s emphasis—mainly via Tim Simons, it has to be said—on the “progression” or “journey” of the show’s characters toward their worst S7 versions. The words “nihilism” and “dark” have been thrown around quite a bit in relation to where the characters end up. Usually at least once an episode Simons will point out a moment or character action and say something like “I feel like here you get a sense of just how dark/Machiavellian/crazy/evil this character can go” and sort of frame it like a “preview” of the later season (S7 in particular clearly feels separate to the cast compared to the others). Like Amy’s deal with O’Brien in Episode 4 was framed that way, as well as multiple Selina moments, and in one episode Walsh and Simons had a whole debate about whether or not Selina was showing actual remorse for a gaffe she committed compared to later seasons when she wouldn’t even care. There’s a lot of talk about how Selina is still trying to honor the agreements and exchanges she makes with other politicians in a way that obviously disappears in S7.

While I understand, obviously, the impulse to look at the show as a whole and examine all the different character arcs over the course of the seasons…the difference between the early seasons of the show versus the later seasons is not strictly a question of good vs bad vs mad and powerhungry. Sure, some pretty dark shit happens in S7, but early in S1 we have Amy making a deal with a white supremacist, which is pretty damn dark too! It’s not about the “scale” of all the different morally gray/Machiavellian political calculations that are made by the characters (although I can see why some people might try and frame it that way). It’s about how the whole entire ingredients and structure of the show’s political and interpersonal worlds changed so completely, a totally different approach to plot and narrative. It’s about how in S1 even the smallest decision by Selina had political stakes and in S7 all the action took place in a vacuum with no consequences.

So, that’s kind of frustrating, and I’m not necessarily looking forward to when they get David Mandel on, because I imagine it will just be using Trump to explain everything different about his approach to the show. But there’s a few seasons to go until we get there, thank goodness.
