omer counter 5783
Posting 6 Apr 2023 / 15 Nisan 5783: tonight starts the omer! You can check out HebCal's handy checker for what day of the omer it is at this link.
Tumblr media
Image description: a digital collage with full colour botanical illustrations. A flowering branch of pomegranate has a sheaf of wheat in the middle. A spiral of moon phases in black starting from center top and ending with a gibbous moon at the straw for the sheaf of wheat.
For some people, this is something they were never taught about and you'll be surprised to hear about it. For others, it's a quotidian count without much more. For others (like me), it's a chance to do a little study each evening and take stock of your actions between Pesach and Shavuot. (Same goes for Shavuot - maybe it's a day you look forward to for study or for cheesecake, maybe it's something you never heard about. I like it because it brings together multiple of my loves: cream-based desserts, reading, flowers, and staying up all night.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image descriptions. Two photographs. Left is a single particularly tall stalk of blooming wild radish in a field of blooming white radish. The horizon shows some trees and the top third of the photo is a clear blue sky. Right is a bee about to collect nectar from a branch of flowering white ornamental pear. Her legs are visibly packed with golden pollen. The background is bokeh branches with few leaves on a sunny day.
The kabbalists introduced the practice of considering seven of the sefirot on the tree of life over the seven week period between Pesach and Shavuot as we metaphorically journey from the Narrow Place to Revelation. Each week has a sefira and each day has a sefira, so you end up considering each of them within each other: what does lovingkindness within discipline look like? What is sovereignty and humility within splendor? What is splendor within sovereignty?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description. Two images almost the same. Both depict a white kabbalistic tree of life collaged on a photo of the sea and mountains on the horizon at sunset with a subtle trans pride palette. The left has only Hebrew and the right has English transliteration under the Hebrew.
I have counted for a couple years now in chevruta and learn something new about myself, my friends, and our texts each year. If you've never tried counting before but are game to take a look, if you've tried before but this year you're going to complete it, or you've done this before and are looking to consider your practice from another angle, I have a tool for you!
I wrote an omer counter off my notes. We will never achieve full understanding, and each year will change and our understanding with us.
Tumblr media
Image description: the cover of the omer counter with previously described pomegranate spiral moon and wheat image at center. Top reads counting the omer in English and Hebrew with the year 5783. Bottom right has artist signature in Korean and English transliteration of Hebrew.
There's a big at-a-glance spread of the count:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description: a double spread, split into two images, in black and white of a calendar with Gregorian and Hebrew dates, day of the count, sefirot, moon phases, and Jewish holidays.
There are quick breakdowns that invite you to consider your own systems and give background for
why and how to count
the tree of life
sefirot etymology and translations
what Shavuot is
Each week has a double spread with plenty of space for your own notes, the sefira of the week, translations of the sefira, the blessing for counting the omer in Hebrew and English, and the day of the count in Hebrew and English. These are my own using my consistent queer and poetic grounding to get the cultural and not just literal meaning across, using multiple names and genders for the Divine.
Tumblr media
Image description: a double spread showing the week focusing on the sefira tiferet, in all black and white, as described in the above paragraph.
If this piques your interest, or you'd just like to support a mixed race queer Jew, please consider visiting my ko-fi, where you can get a PDF for as low as $5, or my redbubble, where you can purchase stickers, notebooks, and cards with the images.

Oh crap I forgot about counting the omer! I was even gonna post about it ahead of time but I did notttt
Well, iirc, it does not matter halachically. Just jump in where you are. This app has the bracha, and then you say "today is day X" or "today is X weeks X days" or both, depending upon your preference.
What I like about it is that it also talks about the meaning of each day, and then it asks the WORST MOST INCISIVE FUCKING QUESTIONS?@? FOR YOU TO JOURNAL OR THINK ABOUT??? Like I am not even kidding when I say it just absolutely DRAGS me multiple times each year.
Seriously, let's tap on "Journal" and see what prompts it gives me right now. There are apparently 9 today, I can't remember if that's true every day or what. But the very second one is, "Do others take advantage of my giving nature?" Oof?
Then here's a puzzler: "Do I take into account the capacity of my partner to receive love before I give it?" I am aroacely applying these to everyone I love, in my mind, and it is tripping me out to think nonjudgmentally about the ramifications of, like...
I'm picturing love as being like a pitcher of water I pour, and frankly I don't care how small a cup you chose off that shelf! You are getting ALL MY LOVE and we're just gonna acknowledge that I'm pouring water all over your shoes! I don't have time for MEASURING this shit!
Or I don't like you and you can have just a little bit of water. Because I'm not a dick.
It's 2 am, make sense of these thoughts if you can.

How to Count the Omer:
The omer refers to the 49-day period between the second night of Passover (Pesach) and the holiday of Shavuot. This period marks the beginning of the barley harvest when, in ancient times, Jews would bring the first sheaves to the Temple as a means of thanking God for the harvest. The word omer literally means "sheaf" and refers to these early offerings. The Torah itself dictates the counting of the seven weeks following Passover: "You shall count from the eve of the second day of Pesach, when an omer of grain is to be brought as an offering, seven complete weeks. The day after the seventh week of your counting will make fifty days, and you shall present a new meal offering to God (Leviticus 23:15-16)." In its biblical context, this counting appears only to connect the first grain offering to the offering made at the peak of the harvest. As the holiday of Shavuot became associated with the giving of the Torah, and not only with a celebration of agricultural bounty, the omer period began to symbolize the thematic link between Passover and Shavuot. While Passover celebrates the initial liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt, Shavuot marks the culmination of the process of liberation, when the Jews became an autonomous community with their own laws and standards. Counting up to Shavuot reminds us of this process of moving from a slave mentality to a more liberated one. When to Count the Omer The counting of the omer begins on the second night of Passover. Jews in the Diaspora generally integrate this counting into the second seder. The omer is counted each evening after sundown. The counting of the omer is generally appended to the end of Ma'ariv (the evening service), as well. [Some call the evening service Arvit.]
The article also contains the blessing and formula for [day #, week #] when you get to that point. For those who would like to have the full list of [day #, week #] in Hebrew, Sefaria has a page: Easy as 1, 2, 3: How to Count the Omer.
Those who don't have a current need for Hebrew script (shortening the page/list): Reform's Counting of the Omer: Blessings for Each Day.
The Conservative/Masorti page has a printable calendar, a weekly email, a mixtape, and resources on the spiritual reflection side: Counting The Omer.
Chabad also has Omer Tools: a daily counter, a daily email reminder, a counter app, and a printable calendar.

Changing the narrative.
Online hate speech might seem like an unstoppable tide, but strategies are being employed by governments, civil society, and individuals, to fight back. A new UN Podcasts series, UNiting Against Hate, explains how this dangerous phenomenon is being tackled worldwide.
The way to combat this toxic environment, according to Mr. Gillick, is to create counter-narratives, disseminating accurate, factual information and stories that promote unity rather than division.
However, he acknowledges that this is a big ask. “It is difficult to counter public broadcasters, big media outlets with several hundred journalists and reporters with thousands of flights a day, with a group of 10 to 15 journalists who are trying to write about very specific topics, in a different way, and to do the analytical and investigative reporting.”
One organization that is trying to create counter-narratives is Kirkuk Now, an independent media outlet in Iraq, which is trying to produce objective and quality content on these groups and share it on social media platforms.
Tumblr media
“Our focus is on minorities, internally displaced people (IDPs), women and children and, of course, freedom of expression,” says editor-in-chief of Kirkuk now, Salaam Omer. “We see very little content [about them] in the Iraqi media mainstream. And if they are actually depicted, they are depicted as problems,” Mr Omer says.
In Pakistan, where certain religious or faith-based groups are very vulnerable – in particular Ahmadis and Shia and then Hindus and Christians – Bytes for All, a human rights organization and think tank, launched an online to counter hate speech.
The campaign sought pledges from different organisations in Pakistan and the public to amplify the message. It was launched in 2021 on Twitter, where it became one of the top ten trends in the country.
The next phase involved creating video messages highlighting the plight of religious minorities in Pakistan, and university roadshows, to engage with young people.
Tumblr media
The campaign targeted those aged between 15 and 35, who make up a majority of Pakistan’s population because, says Mr. Baloch, “they were actually the people who were using social media platforms, engaged in spewing hate speech, and exposed to hateful messages as well”.
There is a widespread belief that social media companies must be made responsible for the content they carry, and sanctioned if hate speech is spread on their platforms but, for Claire Thomas, deputy director of international NGO Minority Rights Group, this is not a long-term solution to the problem.
“What we saw in Myanmar was that when Facebook started to effectively police what was on its platform, the hate speech in Myanmar moved to Tik Tok. When you have multiple platforms with very large audiences, you're only as strong as your weakest link. When you think about where those platforms are based and what jurisdictions have control over them, our ability to make them police their own content effectively is really quite limited”.
In Ms. Thomas’s view, there should be more of a focus on educating people on the dangers and damaging effects of hate speech, and ensuring that they have greater access to balanced content.
“Now, I know that's a huge undertaking, and many people don't believe that it's possible”, she admits, “but for me, it's where we should try to put our efforts moving forward.”

Seventy Years of Membership: What is Turkey’s Role in NATO?
Tumblr media
© AP Photo/Manu Fernandez
Turkey joined NATO in 1952, becoming the 13th member of the North Atlantic Alliance three years after its creation.
The Turkish Patriotic Party's deputy chairman has argued that Ankara may withdraw from NATO in five to six months. Ethem Sancak cited a whole array of problems, related in particular to Athens-Ankara ties and the NATO bid by Sweden and Finland, as well as latest polls indicating that 80% of the population believes the US to be hostile towards Turkey.
His remarks prompted the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to make it clear that Turkey leaving NATO is out of the question, at least for now.
So what role does Turkey currently play in the alliance and how plausible is a scenario of Ankara exiting NATO? Sputnik has the answers.
What is Ankara's Role in NATO Missions?
Local media estimates that Turkey is among the top five NATO countries that makes “the most significant contribution” to the alliance’s missions and special operations.
Prior to the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan, Turkey took part in the 2015-2021 Resolute Support Mission, being responsible for security and operation of the international airport in Kabul.
Between 2005 and 2007, Ankara supported the United Nations-African Union mission in western Sudan’s Darfur, which was launched under the auspices of the NATO program to support the African Union countries in the field of education and transport.
Currently, Turkey contributes to the NATO Mission in Kosovo (KFOR) and supports efforts to prevent illegal migration in the Aegean.
Also, Turkey plays an important role in the NATO mission in Iraq, providing refueling of aircraft with the AWACS radar detection system as part of efforts by the international coalition to combat Daesh*.
Retired US Navy admiral and former supreme allied commander of NATO James Stavridis confirmed this information. stressing in an op-ed earlier this week that “the Turks had provided troops, aircraft and ships to every NATO mission for years — Afghanistan, peacekeeping in the Balkans, counter-piracy, cybersecurity and so on.”
“Under my command, they provided combat capability to the 2011 intervention in Libya, something other major allies chose to avoid. Every time I asked for something, they stood and delivered,” Stavridis argued.
Is Incirlik Base of Importance?
Turkey’s Incirlik Air Base, constructed in 1955, played an active role in the implementation of NATO missions, both during the Cold War and afterwards.
During the First Gulf War, the facility served as the origin point from which coalition forces flew combat missions over northern Iraq. Later on, US-led coalition forces used the base for missions in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
In late 2014, Turkey provided the base as a launch pad for the anti-Daesh coalition’s combat operations against the terrorist group.
Currently, Incirlik hosts the 39th Air Base Wing of the US Air Force, including approximately 1,500 US troops, as well as a spate of combat and refueling aircraft. In addition, 70 US B61-12 tactical nuclear bombs are reportedly stockpiled at Incirlik.
What is Turkey's Stance on Sweden's NATO Bid?
Meanwhile, latest developments have indicated that Turkey remains a NATO member to be reckoned with. On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Sweden should not expect Turkish support for its bid to join the bloc as the EU country's right-wing activists burned a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm after receiving permission from the authorities.
Erdogan was echoed by AKP spokesman Omer Celik, who said that Turkey has nothing to talk about with Sweden on the NATO membership process now, and that the situation is "going backwards.”
On May 18, Sweden, along with Finland, handed over an application to join NATO to the alliance's secretary general. At the moment, 28 of 30 NATO member states had already made a positive decision on the admission of the northern countries to NATO, with the exception of Turkey and Hungary.
Has US Congress Ever Looked to Expel Turkey From NATO?
Yes. In 2020, the US House submitted a resolution calling for Turkey's exclusion from NATO, in a move initiated by House Democrat Tulsi Gabbard.
The Armenian National Council America said at the time that Gabbard accused Ankara of participating in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the side of Azerbaijan, closing the border with Armenia, and collaborating with Syrian militants associated with al-Qaeda** and Daesh.
According to Gabbard, all this runs counter to NATO policy, which calls for stable peace in Nagorno-Karabakh. At the end of the day, the adoption of the resolution never saw the light of day.
How Can Turkey Be Expelled From NATO?
It is safe to assume that the chances of Ankara being expelled from NATO are zero, given that the North Atlantic Treaty stipulates neither punitive measures for its member states nor a procedure for expelling any of them. It is a NATO member itself that can notify of its intention to terminate the contract.
Omer Celik, spokesman for Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, said on Wednesday that “the words of those who talk about the withdrawal of Turkey from NATO are extremely surprising."
“There is no question of this. We are one of the countries that founded NATO. These people have no right to say such things." — Omer Celik, Spokesman for Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party
When Did Turkey Enter NATO?
With the second-largest army in NATO after the US, Turkey remains one of the oldest members of the alliance. Ankara's NATO accession protocol was signed by then-Turkish President Celal Bayar on October 17, 1951. The country officially became a member of the alliance on February 18, 1952.
The North Atlantic Alliance, known as NATO, was created in 1949 by 12 countries, including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, the UK, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and the US. Right now, the alliance comprises a total of 30 countries.

HANGING OUT AT SMALL'S LIVE #22, 19-20 SEPTEMBER 2022
ARI HOENIG with Gadi Lehavi and Tivon Pinnicot, SMALL'S, 19 SEPTEMBER 2022, 2nd set
MARTIN WIND with Ed Neumeister and Jim McNeely, MEZZROW'S, 27 AUGUST 2022
I'll put these two gigs together instead of putting them in other essays as ARI HOENIG's pianist Gadi Lehavi could have been in the last essay on Omer Avital with fellow Israelis, first Yotam Silberstein and then Eden Ladin with a vocal/guitar sit in from Dida Peled. I might have put last night's Ahud Asherie/Jeremy Pelt gig in there, but it will go into a forthcoming Art of the Duo essay based on the next run of good old Sean Mason/Giveton Gelin and a Steve Slagle/Bruce Barth gig I missed in real time. OR I could have put MARTIN WIND with the duos to think again about drummerless ensembles.
Those possible foregrounds will be backgrounds. The foreground here is the ways these trios confound usual set ups. I have seen plenty of ARI HOENIG trios with Gadi Lehavi and that's what I clicked on for an unusual for me second set. But instead of Ben Tiberio's bass, Tivon Pennicot was there to play tenor and Lehavi had a keyboard too. But it was fully an Ari Hoenig trio with some familiar tunes, the pretty For Tracy for his wife and the neighborhood jaunt Guernsey Street Goosenecks, and his ever present complex drumming that opens up an infinity of possibilities of rhythms with himself, with each member of the band, and with the collective sound. I am continually intrigued by the sheer musicality of it and the restraint and delicacy. Drummers like to roar and while Hoenig has a bit of Sesame Street's Animal in his demeanor, he is really quite subtle with nice inflections of tone.
I have in the past mistakenly underestimated Lehavi's piano thinking that the maelstrom, albeit quiet, of Hoenig and Tiberio overwhelmed him. But I have come to see both how he manages to dance over them but also how his taste allows his leader to express his own lyrical side, a lyrical side that shapes the subtle inflections that make him a different drummer. Though he had added keyboard bass and synthesizer responsibilities, his piano playing was, if anything, more focused. With Pinnicot's nice light tone but own rhythmic attack, syncing up with each band mate in turn or doing his own thing, it was quite a fresh way to deepen my appreciations of Lehavi and Hoenig while wanting to hear more of his tenor. This could have devolved into something else, cliched and fusion-y, but they used the tools and palette colors to play Ari Hoenig music. And I like Ari Hoenig music very much.
MARTIN WIND's bass with Ed Neumeister's trombone and Jim McNeely's piano at Mezzrow's also looked like a show to not let get buried in the Small's Archive. I've seen Wind a few times--with the Ingrid Jensen/Steve Tressler tribute to Kenny Wheeler and with Scott Robinson in a similar unexpected configuration. He's a strong player who stepped into being the entire rhythm section while soloing well on a set of intricate compositions. Neumeister's Gmundun was in honor of a Swiss village associated with Arnold Schoenberg and Wind's Counter My Point wove the three lines in very specific ways. It was a compositional gig without sacrificing accessibility or becoming arch. Indeed Jim McNeely is a rich pianist whom I had somehow missed. And I am fond of trombones for their timbre and range. Neumeister delivered that, but there were moments where I found his articulation blurred and that was too bad.
I needed these opportunities to retreat into the music and the writing, so Small's Live to the rescue once again.

The Breakable Woman
In one version, the battle over my body has ended with another’s covert strike and its pyrotechnic reaction.
My head severed sharply by a sword of Saint-Omer: limbs no more members of the same tight society: voice-box taped and shelved its tiny silver key sent poste restante to a strangulated exclave.
In this version, my dissolution is slow and particular: ligament to cartilage, a rising tide.
Desperately I want to keep hold of myself: to return to you all after this prolonged unmooring, imposed by the inky current, counter to my choice.
What remains are my words to the wine seller: I’m nostalgic for the taste of my country
to the circling necrophiliacs: I am laid out to your fancy
the person who forgot I am a person is gone.

🔅ISRAEL REALTIME - Connecting the World to Israel in Realtime
🔻SUICIDE DRONE from HEZBOLLAH - LEBANON at Moshav Arbel - Lower Galilee, miss - hit open area (not exactly, meters from a family home), no sirens in impact area but there were at border area where it crossed.  Moshav Arbel, explosion heard, children in school and kindergartens rushed to shelter.
🔻ROCKET from HEZBOLLAH - LEBANON at IDF post in the Western Galilee.
▪️IDF SAYS… struck and killed terrorist who launched rockets from Gaza within minutes of the launch.
▪️HOUTHIS SAY… “We have no choice but further escalation.” (( Their honor is tied to the fact they committed to affecting Israel and Gaza but aren’t effectively doing so. Are they willing to sacrifice their fighters, civilians, cities to their honor? Yes. ))
▪️RAMADAN SWEETS FOR GAZA?  “Although Ramadan is not expected to affect the ongoing fighting in Gaza, the possibility of importing aid into the Strip that would allow Gazans to celebrate the holiday was discussed at the cabinet meeting, Haaretz reported.”
▪️COUNTER-TERROR OPERATIONS.. overnight in Beit Omer, Hebron area, Shoafat camp, East Jerusalem, Qabatiya, near Jenin, and Jebel Al Mukhabar neighborhood of East Jerusalem, and Aqat Jaber camp near Jericho. Heavy clashes and firefights in Qabatiya.
▪️ATTACK ON PM? “A suspicious envelope was found in the Prime Minister’s office. Under investigation.”
▪️EARLIER REPORT OF GUNFIRE AT CARMIT.. Police: criminal conflict between 2 factions of the same (Arab) family.
▪️MORE ON ATTACKED SHIP.. the ship struck by the Houthis was flying the flag of Belize, registered to the UK, and operated by a Lebanese company. Oops.  Updated report says the bulk carrier is carrying AMMONIA.  If it leaks its cargo, and it was earlier said to be in danger of sinking and the crew abandoned ship - the environmental damage may be EXTREME.

I’m slightly late but today I did my omer counter for this year! Counting the omer is one of my favorite traditions and I love making a calendar to keep track. Here’s hoping I remember every night to count!
