I really hate when people try to make characters in OMORI entirely bad or entirely good, or even just define one of their actions as Bad or Good. Because the whole point of the game is nuance!! There isn't a bad guy and there isn't a good guy. (I think this is pretty hilarious given the game is aesthetically very dichotomic).

Sunny pushed his sister down the stairs, and killed her (it was a murder, it was an accident, he regretted it, he forgot it, he didn't apologize for it).

Basil faked his friend's death as a suicide (to protect his best friend, it hurt his other friends, it hurt his best friend, Mari wouldn't have wanted that, he was twelve and it was the only solution then).

Mari pushed Sunny too hard for the recital (she just wanted it to be perfect, she didn't understand her brother, were there other things in her life making her such a perfectionist?).

Hero got mad at his brother (he was depressed, his brother just wanted to help, his brother failed to help, he apologized and never got mad again, he apologized and never got mad again).

Omori kills Basil in increasingly fucked up ways and forces Sunny to forget ("Basil" is a dream, a mere thought, the Truth is bad, the Truth has to be uncovered one day, it's unhealthy, he's just trying to protect Sunny, he's failing, he is Sunny).

Sunny's dad abandoned him (he might have known Sunny killed his sister, he was heartbroken, he has a duty to take care of his child as a father) and his mother left him alone for three days (it's been four years.)

Aubrey is a bully (she's so sure Basil hurt her and Mari's memory, she's so tired of Kel telling her to think about what Mari would think, she's so done with being ignored instead of cared for, she is a bully, she hurt others, she apologized).

Kel is quick to jump to conclusions and doesn't see nuance enough (he's 16, he's neglected, his brother's immediate reaction to lashing out was acting like he was a monster and changing completely, he's digging up past trauma, he's talking for the dead).

Basil hurt Sunny physically and in a way that can't be fixed (he was having a panic attack, he was probably either having hallucinations or was being profoundly delusional, he ripped his friend's eye out oh my god, he didn't mean to, he didn't mean to, he didn't mean to).

Etc. Even the apology at the end is nuanced : it's selfish of Sunny to want to get it out of his chest, and it's going get everyone's trauma out of their chests again, but don't they deserve to know? Don't Sunny and Basil deserve to be honest? It's not about being forgiven, it's about telling the Truth - from there, what happens doesn't matter.

Omori particularly gets a bad rep but he is Sunny. Sunny isn't Omori but Omori is Sunny, the same way everything in Headspace is Sunny in some way. And from there, can we define a defense mechanism as bad? A child's defense mechanism as bad? Is Sunny's desire to just forget about all this and be happy bad? It's not healthy, but most of the alternatives aren't very appealing.

Obviously there's darker shades of grey and lighter ones : Kel and Hero are some of the kindest characters in the game, their actions don't hold the same weight as Aubrey's, and Aubrey's actions don't hold the same weight as Basil's and Sunny's. Basil's and Sunny's actions also don't hold the same weight as each other, and Mari's perfectionism, despite being what jumpstarted everything in a way, doesn't hold the same weight as everything else. What Basil did wasn't right, what Sunny did wasn't right, but circumstances are important : two twelve years old boys (both likely pretty mentally ill) made two consecutive mistakes during increasingly stressful situations.

Flashback to my first playthrough of Omori where my only spoiler was "the bad route is if you don't open the door" and I didn't remember that when ""Mari"" knocked on the front door so i didnt open it. Then I remembered and spent way too long thinking that Mari must be dead from the cold because I didn't let her inside and that I had put myself on the bad route. When Aubrey said "Mari's dead" I thought it confirmed that. I was so guilty until i realized she was dead long before that point lol

He sighed — “Yes?” — he shot up a glare at you, frowning, he was busy writing down his essay for school.

“Can we.. play a game, please?” You softly grinned, hoping he’d get off that paper he’s been working on for, I don’t know, maybe two hours?

Sighing once more, SUNNY responded, with frustration, “Fine.”

“Oh–” you didn’t quite think he’d agree so quickly.

Both of you then sat on the couch as you revealed the Pocky box — “Oh, God,” he rolled his eyes, “Kel, right?”

You smirked as if you were a Kel dupe, “Yes, he told me to do it with you,” you nudged his shoulder jokingly as you opened the box, then the packaging, “he told me you’d enjoy the game!”

“I don’t like that [favorite flavor] one,” he blandly stated, quite cruel and direct if you asked me. “Oh, hush!” You took a Pocky stick out; you would get the flavor part and he the bread.

“So…?” he looked at you, begging for instructions of the game with his eyes.

“Okay, so—” that’s a lot of so’s, “—both of us have to slowly bite our way through the Pocky, but, whoever accidentally bites the Pocky off or gets to the middle first, loses.”

“What if we kiss?” he asked; you stayed silent.

You tried your best to suppress a smirk, grin, smile. How could one be so naïve?

“Anyway,” you said — a chuckle let out — as you pointed the Pocky between your mouth and his, again, you had the flavor part, “good game.”

The game started; both of you started nibbling on the Pocky, you looked up at him, but he only looked at his distance in the Pocky.

Then, it broke!

“Dang it– YOU did that!” You pointed at SUNNY, who stared blankly at you, “No,” he mumbled.

“Ugh,” you rolled your eyes, “whatever.” You took another Pocky stick, this time, cruelly and tauntingly, he had the flavor; “You must hate me, don’t you?”

“Hush,” you aligned the stick again, then the game began again. Nibble, nibble, both of you were close to the middle, then–

In just a mere moment, the stick disappeared — you were kissing him!

The kiss, surprisingly (as you thought he’d pull away immediately), lasted for long… long… and long…

“Pweh!” he exclaimed — ouch — as you retorted, “Uhm, excuse me??” Offended you were, how could he say that, to your perfectly lip-glossed lips? :(

“Sorry, sorry,” he wiped his lips, “the Pocky flavor—” but only because his saliva slightly dripped out from his cough, “—I don’t like it, I told you.”

You sighed; well, at least he was honest, “Yeah, whatever.”

You took another Pocky stick; he had the bread part.

Game started, nibbling, the room was quiet. Cold.

But, as an apology, he nibbled quite faster, so he got to the middle first to lose, willingly — “Haha!” you chortled triumphly; he smiled, a rare sight, but you failed to notice.

“I’m good at this game~!” You proudly reveled, reaching down for another stick, but, just then, his hand held yours (the hand you’re using to get the sticks, by the way.)

“Hm?–”

You looked up, but then he leaned in, much further than he planned to; kiss count, number two.

But this time, it was shorter, yet more passionate that the previous one — heartfelt, or maybe it was because he was the one who initiated it?

Nevertheless, he felt, quite strange too. Dear Sister, please help… he prayed in his head, help, help help!!!!

Blood came rushing to your cheeks — mostly his, though, he kept his head down — “Sunn?”

He breathed shallowly, Crap, he thought, “Y-Yeah?”

He kept his head down, his dandruff was showing — no, no, just kidding — embarrassed by what he’d done. You were still in shock from the sudden kiss, that you accidentally stayed silent.

“S-Sorry,” again, he apologized, thinking he caused the tension in the air. (Man, I just wanna hug him so badly)

You exhaled through your nose in relief, “Heyy,” you lifted up his chin, but he averted eye contact, “it’s okay, I’m sorry…”

You cupped his cheeks, then gave him quick, big pecks everywhere on his face, to his dismay, he kept yelling; “Stop!–” mwah, “–you taste like–” mwah, “[the flavor of the Pocky]!!” mwah.

You then stopped the kissing, pouting, “Oh, so you don’t like my kisses?” still cupping his cheeks as you stared right into his soul.

“No, no, I didn’t mean that…” He murmured, leaning into your palms, and caressing the back of them. Still avoiding looking in your eyes, though, even after all those verbs.

Softly, you kissed his forehead, “I love you too~”

He responded to that, but only I knew — “I love you more,” he whispered, or mouthed, but you didn’t hear.

Hello, if requests are still open, then I would like to do just that. Can I have a request with Hero and Kel or omori gang with a reader who has abusive parents? This could be shouting, insults, beatings, pressure from grades and much more, in principle, how strong the cruelty will be is not very important to me, although I would like to at least get to small beatings, severity, insults and screams (I just have similar situation), but do it as you want. If I can't make a request like this for some reason, can I have a request also with Hero and Kel and with a reader who is overloaded with studies and activities, and later is on the verge of a breakdown or freaks out? Bandages and some much needed comfort | Omori

Characters: Hero and Kel

A/N: Okay. First off, I am so sorry this took so long! Second, I had a lot of trouble completing this request and since I haven't written anything Omori-related in a hot minute, I probably wrote these two out of character but I hope you don't mind. I'm not really accepting request right now but I decided to write this because I wanted to bring you comfort in your difficult times! I hope you enjoy this! :D

Warnings: Abuse is heavily implied! Reader has a vase thrown at them ( Hero ) and gets punched in the face ( Kel ) so please, if this upsets you, don't read this!

"Well that was..interesting." Kel mumbled before letting out an awkward laugh. A mistake he realizes a bit too late as you look up at him, your face relatively stoic aside from the unshed tears that are bubbling.

"Oh, uh- ..My bad." He mumbles in a hast, forcing himself to look away from the dark spot that's slowly forming around your eye. You had been feeling down lately and Kel wanted to surprise you by visiting you. It was unfortunate that your mom had the day off today..

At first, it wasn't bad. After he introduced himself, your mom gently urged you to come downstairs. When you came down, your heart dropped to your ass when you saw your best friend at the door—Your best friend who apparently found out where you lived without your knowing.

Completely oblivious, Kel watched the whole ordeal go down. How you seemed oddly nervous as you quickly explained that he was just a friend you met at the park, how your mom practically glared at you only to look back at him and flash him a smile similar to the ones his mother would give him when she wasn't trying to look bad in front of guests, up until she told him to wait outside for you and shut the door in his face.

He waited outside for what seemed to him like forever but after a while, he heard some yelling and you had finally walked outside, your face bruised and beginning to swell.

And now he's walking with you in complete silence. Just great..

What is he supposed to do now? This silence is killing him..but how is he supposed to get rid of it? By asking questions about what happened? No, it's way too soon for that.. Should he crack a joke? Doubt you'll find anything funny right now..

..Agh, forget this. Just say something already.

"Hey, let's go to the store," Kel blurts out. You pause, your feet coming to a halt as you finally look back at him, your brows beginning to scrunch.

"Don't worry, you can wait for me outside. I just want to grab some stuff so we can bandage up your face," He pauses, "..I'm not the best when it comes to medical stuff so you might need to help me out.."

"Kel," You begin, but he's quick to interrupt you. Smiling brightly as he says, "Hey, do you think Gino's will give us a discount if you come in looking like a mummy? I know Halloween has passed but if we dress you up in a good enough costume I'm sure that pizza guy will give us something!"

You stare at him with a wide-eyed look and for a moment, Kel feared that you saw through his flimsy attempt at cheering you up—or even worse, he accidentally offended you with his joke. Luckily, it seemed like neither happened, you even laughed a little.

"I don't think that'll work Kel," You say, a small grin beginning to make it's way on your face. It causes Kel's smile to widen.

"Oh come on, it's a foolproof plan! If we just wrap your entire body—"

"I am not letting you wrap me head to toe in bandages."

"Well not with that attitude you aren't."

"Kel—"

A wince sounds, sucked in through clenched teeth as a small, burning pain sets fire to your skin. Hero's eyes momentarily break away from your arm, his eyes looking up to shoot you an apologetic glance before they quickly return to the small cuts that litter your arm.

"I'm sorry, but I have to clean them to prevent an infection.." He mumbles. His tone as soft as the clouds outside his window. Despite this, it does little to comfort you.

"I know.. It just stings a bit," You reply lowly in which Hero nods his head, now completely focused once again.

"I can't believe he did this to you," He says after a moment, his brows dipping to form a deep v, "And over something like this.. It makes me so angry.."

"It was my fault," You quickly say, "I shouldn't have left my phone unattended."

"He shouldn't have attacked you because you're living your life."

"My father wants me to focus on my grades so my scholarship doesn't go to waste. Plus he isn't fond of the idea of me getting into any kind of relationship so—"

"That gives him the excuse to put his hands on you? To throw a literal vase at you?" Hero questions, his words leaving his lips like sharpened daggers, none of which were directed at you. Even so, it makes you feel awkward and you end up falling silent as a result.

"Listen, I understand that you probably think this is normal since you've dealt with his behavior for so long but this isn't normal. Constantly having to be patched up because your father can't control his anger isn't normal."

"Of course I know that!" You say, beginning to raise your voice, "I know it's not normal but what can I do, huh? I'm a broke fucking college student! Hell, I can barely afford pizza let alone my own apartment!"

"I don't know if you know this, but not everyone has a nice life filled with loving friends and family like you do, Hero! Not everyone has caring parents who'll be happy for you and'll want to provide for you like your parents have!" Slowly, Hero's eyes begin to widen. Not because of your harsh words or the mean glare that he knows isn't fully directed at him, but because of the crystal-like tears that have begun to roll down your cheeks.

"I'm sorry.." You sniffle, "I.. I'm so sorry.." You begin to curl into yourself, your tears splashing on knees, "I.. I'm just.. I—" You cut yourself off as you choke, Hero's eyes soften.

"It's okay, I know you didn't mean it," Hero murmurs, tone soft as he slowly pulls away from you, sensing how overwhelmed you are, "And I'm sorry for being so inconsiderate. You were already upset and I made it worse.."

Putting his first aid kit aside, Hero slides back to lean against the foot of his bed, pulling his knees up to his chest as he listens to your sobs in silence.

He's not used to this side of you. He's not used to you being so vulnerable around him. You had always put on such a strong front around him, always showed such a caring and sweet façade to him, and as nice as that was at times, he often felt as if some wall was put between you two. One that was iron solid despite being made out of cotton candy and sour gumdrops. He always felt that when it came to certain things, you always hid how you truly felt as to avoid concerning others so in a way seeing you like this, your true feelings bursting out like water flowing out of a broken dam makes him feel as happy as it does sad. ( An odd feeling seeming as his partner is having a breakdown on his bed right now )

Eventually, Hero slides up onto his bed, his fingers slowly inching towards yours, "Would you like me to hold you?' He asks, scanning your hunched over form for any sign of rejection before snaking his arms loosely around you.

"I've been thinking lately. Well, a little longer than lately actually.." Hero mutters, "What if you moved in with me? You'd still have to wait a little while since I'm not allowed to live off campus yet, but you can always visit like you've been doing."

"I'm sorry that I can't rescue you immediately but if you'll be patient, I promise it'll be worth it. I've been looking at a few apartments and found some really good ones. We can look at them together tomorrow if you'd like. Speaking of which, what do you want for breakfast tomorrow? There's not much we can make without a stove but if push comes to shove I can always get something to eat. Of course, you'll have to leave the same way you came to avoid getting caught by security.."

after picking up the cake from your local grocery store, you made your way outside to the parking lot - running into a familiar set of lovely twins you had grown to know quite well.

"y/n!" you heard lumine call out to you cheerfully. both of them approached you with smiles on their faces and even though you were closer to lumine, aether still treated you the same way he treated all his friends.

"hey lumine and aether!" you greeted them and gave each a side hug given you were holding the cake.

"is it someone's birthday?" aether asked, peeking into the bag you were carrying.

"haha, nope! venti, ajax and i are helping our new roommate move in today and i wanted to get him something nice since i didn't properly meet him yet." you explained, heading towards where your car was parked.

lumine and aether exchanged a look that was unreadable to you, properly some weird twin telepathy thing, and then quickly smiled back at you. "oh, right! good luck with that!" lumine said and nudged aether's side.

"uh, yeah! hopefully it goes well!" aether awkwardly chuckled before they said goodbye to you and walked into the store quickly.

you got into your car slightly confused - why did they wish you good luck? sure, sometimes roommates weren't perfect matches but ajax seemed to get along well with him, and venti wasn't complaining so far either - so - did you really need luck? perhaps they were aware of something you weren't? turning the car's ignition, you made your way back to your off campus apartment to meet up with everyone.

upon returning to the apartment, you hurriedly made your way up the staircase, already noticing the moving truck parked nearby unloading boxes. before you went down to help, you wanted to set down the cake and greet the new roommate as soon as possible and even explain what had happened at the diner since you didn't trust ajax or venti to be honest with him about everything.

"ajax, venti - i'm back!" you hummed out in a sing-song voice, pushing the front door open with your foot and making your way into the kitchen. you could hear the faint noise of furniture moving and people talking in the room across from yours and reality quickly set in. a new friend! you were excited and even a little nervous... surely this would take your mind off of kuni altogether.

"guys?" you called out, tossing your keys into the key dish and heading down the hall. venti was standing outside the door frame sipping an iced coffee, he caught your eye quickly and smiled, waving with his free hand. ajax and the new roommate were nowhere to be found which only made your curiosity spike more.

stepping closer to the room being filled with furniture, you suddenly felt a weird sense of… foreboding, almost like, you didn't want to step any closer. venti picked up on your slight hesitation and you could see how he tried to hide his facial expression with his hair and coffee cup.

"i tried to tell him this was a bad idea…" venti mumbled, looking everywhere but you.

"what's a bad idea?" you squinted your eyes at them before internally saying 'fuck it' and stepping into the room.

"uh- i don't think you heard me from the kitchen but hi i'm y-" you stopped dead in your tracks.

Hero’s Messy Desk Drawer: An Unsolicited Fic Excerpt

(A/N: This fic excerpt is from a story that utilized our OCs (in an AU separate from our “When Sun Shines Again” series) but wasn’t posted to this blog because it didn’t follow our strict side ship rules and wasn’t really about Hero (aside from a brief subplot). We mods have agreed that this short, Hero-centric excerpt is acceptable, however, and have decided to post it since Mod Acacia’s headcanon about Hero’s junk drawer was just discussed in this post.)

There was something familiar, almost cozy about Hero’s room. In a way, it reminded Kel of the room they had shared back home. The left side of the room was bright and colorful with chaotic clusters of photos and posters on the wall. It was cleaner than Kel generally kept his room, but just as cluttered with books, CDs, school supplies, and bottles of something or other haphazardly strewn across the dresser and desk. Though the bed was made, the duvet was crinkled, wrinkly, and the pillows looked like they had been scooped up and thrown at the headboard in a hurry. Sunny would probably give it a 4 out of 10.

To be perfectly fair, however, it probably would have just looked “lived in” if it wasn’t for the right side of the room: simple with pale, muted colors, but perfectly pristine like something out of a catalog. Nothing was out of place, and there was no clutter to be had: no knickknacks, no mementos, and just three photos in matching gray frames on the desk. Every book, every record, every CD had been carefully placed on the shelf and all office supplies were housed in drawers or an unassuming gray pencil holder. The blue duvet was perfectly smooth with pillows perfectly arranged. Even their coats and bags that had been placed on the bed had been carefully, thoughtfully lined up in a neat order against the wall.

“No guessing which side’s Hero’s, huh?” quipped Aubrey as she climbed over the mattress for her purse. “Always neat as a pin.”

As she began digging through her bag, most likely for the case for her contact lenses, Kel turned towards Hero’s desk to search for the first aid kit. Like everything else belonging to his brother, it was clean, sanitized, boring though Kel felt badly for thinking that. He was happy to see the photos though—the only truly personalized things of Hero’s in the room. One was of him with his group of college friends—laughing together probably at some party just like this one by the look of it. The second was their most recent family photo, and the third was of their group of friends in Faraway Park when they were kids back when Mari had been alive.

Kel’s chest ached. They looked so different back then—especially Aubrey. He glanced over at her now, still digging through her bag, long pink hair rippling down her back rather than the dark brown locks she had sported in that photo and for the majority of her life. Her eyes were different too—an icy teal now from her colored contacts. That reminded him…he had better start looking for those eyedrops.

As he pulled open the bottom left drawer of Hero’s desk, he paused—blinking in surprise.

“Woah!” he exclaimed before he could stop himself.

“What?” asked Aubrey.

“This drawer is a mess,” he mumbled, so stunned he wasn’t even able to look up at her. In an entire lifetime of knowing Hero, Kel had never known anything of his brother’s to be a mess. He sighed and supposed that there really was a first time for everything. Kel’s brow furrowed as he began sifting through odds and ends—a whole junk drawer of papers, notebooks, books, a couple CDs, even some receipts, a few pictures, and who even knew what else. “There’s all kinds of crap in here…”

Aubrey snorted a partially stifled laugh. “I didn’t know Hero could make a mess.”

“Me neither,” quipped Kel, pushing some of the papers around looking for anything resembling a first aid kit.

“Hey uh…” She sighed. “Speaking of Hero…do you think he’s…”—she paused as if trying to think of the right word—“worried that we’d all be upset if he…if he was, you know—dating again?”

Kel stopped, but he sighed heavily. He had just been wondering the same thing after all. He shrugged his shoulders—focusing his attention on digging through the desk drawer, but he answered, “I think Hero worries about a lot of things he doesn’t have to worry about.”

“I just wouldn’t want him to feel like he couldn’t put himself back out there, you know… because of what we’d think or because he’s scared we’d be upset or think he was disrespecting Mari…” Her voice trailed. “I wish there was a way we could tell him that we’d all be happy…without it sounding like we were prying or making assumptions.”

Kel nodded, but let out a heavy, somewhat helpless sigh. “Don’t look at me. I’d probably just say the wrong thing,” he chuckled, self-deprecatingly—rubbing his hand across the nape of his neck.

“Kel…” Aubrey’s tone softened, but he didn’t look up at her, instead choosing to quickly shrug it off and change directions.

“Besides he says he’s not interested in having that kind of relationship anymore anyway, so he probably just isn’t—no matter what we’d think about it. You know how Hero is. He’s been…”—he paused, unable to think of the right word—“really weird about that kind of thing ever since Mari died. I just…I don’t know if he’ll ever want that again…”

As Kel continued rifling through the drawer, Aubrey sighed. “I know…and I understand that. I wasn’t suggesting we push him or anything I just…didn’t want to be part of whatever was holding him back.” She paused, sighing again. “He looked so happy, and…I really like her.”

“Me too. I’m pretty sure she’s the only reason I’m not failing math right now,” Kel bantered with a laugh before his face softened. He knew he didn’t have to say the rest—didn’t have to say how much he loved Zoey for being such a good friend to Hero, for always studying with him or going on runs with him at the crack of dawn, for helping him do the dishes at their college parties or talking to him about his favorite foods or favorite kinds of music, for being that lone voice of reason in Hero’s somewhat chaotic group of college friends, for making him laugh and smile, and, most of all, for bringing something out in him that they had never imagined they’d get to see again.

“But it’s really not like that,” Kel added, though he wasn’t sure if was reminding himself or reminding Aubrey. “They both swear they’re just friends, and I believe them. I mean, I wish…Maybe someday, but I just—it’s Hero. I don’t know if he’s ever gonna be ready for it.” Kel stopped with a heavy sigh—brow furrowing as he pushed some of the papers around in Hero’s messy desk drawer. “I mean…he’s got a bunch of books about widowers in here…”

“Kel, don’t snoop through Hero’s stuff,” Aubrey scolded with a huff.

Kel’s face flushed, but he shrugged his shoulders. “I’m not trying to. It’s just such a mess in here. There’s papers everywhere and notebooks and books and CDs and…ooh! A present!” Curiously if also a little impulsively, Kel picked up a small, wrapped box tied with a red ribbon. “It’s heavy. I bet it’s jewelry.”

“Kel! Stop snooping,” Aubrey snapped at him. He fumbled around with the box before placing it back in the drawer.

“Look, I’m not being nosy. I’m just looking for the first aid kit. It’s not in here.”

Aubrey huffed. “You’re looking in the wrong drawer. Hero said lower right not lower left.”

Kel took a step back to stare at the desk—tilting his head. “Okay but…my right or the desk’s right?”

“Just check the other drawer!”

Kel closed the messy drawer then opened its identical twin on the other side of the desk—nearly empty except for a neat stack of blank notebook paper, a metal pencil case, and a first aid kit. “Found it!” he declared triumphantly—ignoring the way Aubrey was shaking her head at him.
