A Hong Bao (红包) or Ang Pow in Hokkien is a gift of money packed into a red packet. Red is considered a symbol of luck, life and happiness. Hong baos are given as tokens of good wishes during auspicious occasions such as Chinese New Year and weddings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are no clear literary sources to trace the origin of the red envelope tradition. In China, during the Qin Dynasty, the elderly would thread coins with a red string. As the society progresses, yā suì qián (压岁钱) was evolved to be wrapped by red papers, since the red color symbolizes good fortune in Chinese tradition. Hong Bao (红包) previously called 压岁钱, which initially expresses the meaning of "money suppressing evil spirits". It's a tradition that during Chinese New Year, red envelopes are typically given by the married to the unmarried, most of whom are children. Because it's traditionally believed that children are easy to get hurt by evils, so people will give them 压岁钱 to protect them and that allow the younger generation to spend their year peacefully and safely.

when seventeen gets into a fight with their partner while they're away | ot13
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHOI SEUNGCHEOL
𓆩♡𓆪 he’s a leo sun (and as a leo myself), i know that he’d be too prideful to call you and apologise first, no matter if it was a big or a small fight
𓆩♡𓆪 but then he’d realise how much he misses you
𓆩♡𓆪 it’s not like he can text you or call you and act like nothing happened
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d be heartbroken for the next few days
𓆩♡𓆪 because not only are you hundreds of kilometres apart, but now he also knows that you are angry with him
𓆩♡𓆪 one night he’d go through your shared photos and that would be his breaking point
his gallery <3
Tumblr media
YOON JEONGHAN
𓆩♡𓆪 he knew that you were angry with him when you didn’t pick up his calls
𓆩♡𓆪 and he would keep on calling you until you answered him
𓆩♡𓆪 even if it meant that he had to sit through the whole night with his phone in his hand
𓆩♡𓆪 you had no idea how much he relied on your late night conversations
𓆩♡𓆪 when he could see your face and find some peace among the crazy schedules
𓆩♡𓆪 so he would do everything he could for you to pick up and talk things out
HONG JOSHUA
𓆩♡𓆪 first of all, the chance of you getting into a fight while he is away is like 0.01%
𓆩♡𓆪 the second he hears your annoyed voice, he tries to calm you down and asks you to take a deep breath
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d want you to explain why you’re mad (and that’s when you’d probably realise how silly it was to get mad in the first place)
𓆩♡𓆪 even if was a more of a serious fight, he’d want to talk it out immediately
𓆩♡𓆪 because he wouldn’t be able to go about his day, knowing that you were sad and angry
𓆩♡𓆪 there is no way that Joshua would let the fight drag on for days or he’d go crazy
WEN JUNHUI
𓆩♡𓆪 he could feel his heart breaking, when he saw that you left him on read
𓆩♡𓆪 i don’t think he’d try to call or text you immediately
𓆩♡𓆪 because what if you really don’t want to hear from him now? What if you don’t want to hear from him ever again?
𓆩♡𓆪 usually he wouldn’t be that dramatic about a fight
𓆩♡𓆪 it’s just the knowledge that you are so far away from each other messes with his head
𓆩♡𓆪 but the second he sees your name pop up on his phone screen, he tells you how sorry he is and how much he misses you
KWON SOONYOUNG
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d be so frustrated
𓆩♡𓆪 why did he allow for the situation to escalate so badly, that you didn’t even want pick up his calls?
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d try to go about his day like any other, but the only thing he’d be able to think about was your fight
𓆩♡𓆪 and it would only get worse, to the point where the boys would have to text to you and tell you to call him
𓆩♡𓆪 he was just afraid that if he’d keep on calling and texting you, you’d only get angrier with him
JEON WONWOO
𓆩♡𓆪 he had always been convinced that being away from you wasn’t that hard on him
𓆩♡𓆪 but when you got into your first fight while he was on tour, well, that was hell for him
𓆩♡𓆪 he had never realised how much he actually misses you
𓆩♡𓆪 your calls, your random texts, your facetime dates
𓆩♡𓆪 you holding his hand, your kisses and your laugh
𓆩♡𓆪 he had taken so many pretty pictures that he knew you would love to see, but he couldn’t even send you those
his gallery <3
Tumblr media
LEE JIHOON
𓆩♡𓆪 he would either try to talk things out immediately like Joshua, or give you some time to cool off
𓆩♡𓆪 he knew that getting into a fight while being apart was stupid, because not only are you a couple of countries away from each other, but now angry as well
𓆩♡𓆪 but after those couple of days if you didn’t pick up his calls or respond to his messages, he’d become the biggest pain in your ass
𓆩♡𓆪 because he wouldn’t stop calling and spamming you
𓆩♡𓆪 so you wouldn't have any other option but to talk to him :))
LEE SEOKMIN
𓆩♡𓆪 don’t to this to me
𓆩♡𓆪 if you ever had a fight when he was away, he’d be the saddest and the most heartbroken version of himself
𓆩♡𓆪 he wouldn’t smile, and if any of the boys would try to make him laugh it would be so forced
𓆩♡𓆪 neither of you took the fights between you very well, and now being apart, there was nothing he could to do comfort you
𓆩♡𓆪 which only broke his heart even more
𓆩♡𓆪 the fight wouldn’t last very long though, because after a couple of days you’d call each other in tears saying how much you miss each other
KIM MINGYU
𓆩♡𓆪 now, this man
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d either be spamming your messages with apologies, or be the biggest stubborn baby known to mankind
𓆩♡𓆪 because if he believes that you are in the wrong, there is no way he’s going to apologise first
𓆩♡𓆪 he probably vents to Wonwoo at some point
𓆩♡𓆪 and when the older makes him realise that he is in the wrong, everything changes
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d be calling and texting you 24/7, ready to do anything in order to make it up to you
𓆩♡𓆪 because there is nothing more he loves in this world than you, and the knowledge that he made you sad and upset is unbearable for him
XU MINGHAO
𓆩♡𓆪 similarly to Seungcheol, I think Minghao would be a bit too prideful to apologise first
𓆩♡𓆪 but he would be a lot quicker to realise how stupid it was to ignore you and to start this fight in the first place
𓆩♡𓆪 every time he’d see something that reminded him of you, he’d start to miss you even more
𓆩♡𓆪 if you weren’t picking up his calls he would spam you with random messages
𓆩♡𓆪 and he wouldn’t care if you didn’t respond to him
𓆩♡𓆪 because he knew that you missed him as well and that at some point you’d text him back
your messages <3
Tumblr media
BOO SEUNGKWAN
𓆩♡𓆪 another sad baby that would just try to survive the day
𓆩♡𓆪 the fight would drain him out of all his usual energy, to the point where he wouldn’t even want to bicker with the boys
𓆩♡𓆪 he wouldn’t be able to focus on anything else than the thought that you’re all alone at home, sad and upset because of him
𓆩♡𓆪 he wouldn’t call you at first, because he’d be afraid he’d upset you even more
𓆩♡𓆪 but he would still send you your usual good morning and goodnight messages
CHWE VERNON
𓆩♡𓆪 i think he’d be very mature about the situation
𓆩♡𓆪 he knew that he needed to apologise as soon as possible, in order to put this fight to an end
𓆩♡𓆪 if you didn’t want to talk to him, he’d give you some space
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d miss you so much though
𓆩♡𓆪 especially the random texts and memes you’d send each other throughout the day
𓆩♡𓆪 and he’d still send them, because he knew that no matter what, they would still put a smile on your face
LEE CHAN
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d try to go about his life as if nothing big happened
𓆩♡𓆪 because there are always fights in relationships and people are fine, right?
𓆩♡𓆪 wrong
𓆩♡𓆪 he spends all of his free time looking through your photos and messages
𓆩♡𓆪 which doesn’t help at all, it only makes him miss you more
𓆩♡𓆪 he’d do everything to be back home with you, cuddling on the sofa and watching your favourite movie
𓆩♡𓆪 when your calling ID finally popped up on his phone, a couple of tears run down his cheeks, as he picked up his phone to tell you how sorry he was

ok im gonna ramble a bit more on chinese because like its fun now im proud of my heritage!!!!!
anyway if you wanna write like mk or any other character introducing themselves you dont need to say like "my name is qi xiaotian" you could just say "my name is xiaotian" cuz like idk "qi" is his surname its kinda weird to introduce yourself casually with your surname right just use your first name
again, cultural differences this is how it goes in my country no clue how it works in like china or something but id assume its the same?? i also havent watched the chinese version of the show so idk how he says his name bruh 💀 also this mightve been obvious already but like i saw someone make this mistake (?) so yeah
ALSO QI IS HIS SURNAME!! like usually your chinese surname and english surname match up! i have an english and chinese name :)
so his name would be mk qi? or qi mk?? whatever mk stands for lol.. monktavius kidsworth
so like his full name would be "mk qi xiaotian" because usually your chinese name goes to the back or in some cases it could also be like "qi xiaotian mk" (which sounds better) idk this is so interesting to me guys..
i know some chinese surnames have english versions like
chen -> tan
hong -> ang
but i dont think qi is one of those ive never encountered someone with the surname qi?? i dont think its a popular surname so idk but probably not
again keep in mind cultural differences i live in southeast asia and the show takes place in china 😭
i could ramble about chinese in lmk for like days its just nice to know things and pick up on stuff :') like it feels awesome to flex my mother tongue yk!! anyway if yall have questions regarding chinese send them in i will try to answer to the best of my limited ability haha

Ang Pau (红包) or Red Packet is a monetary gift given during holidays or for special occasions such as a wedding, a graduation, or the birth of a baby. Although the red envelope was popularised by Chinese traditions, other cultures also share similar traditional customs. The red packet is also called 压岁钱 (money that can suppress the demon) when given to children during Chinese New Year. This term, however, is now understood as “money given to children by their elders”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before stepping out of the house to visit relatives or friends this Lunar New Year, bring a pair of Mandarin Oranges (柑) with you. A traditional gift during Chinese New Year is the exchanging of a pair of mandarin oranges and the giving of red packet containing an even amount of money. Unmarried adults and children receive these red packets from married family members and friends in exchange of wishing them good health and fortune.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pineapples are called “ong lai” in Hokkien and Cantonese, which literally translates to 旺来 or “fortune come”, hence their popularity during the CNY celebrations. It is considered lucky to have them during Chinese New Year and giving Pineapple Tarts (黄梨塔) as gifts symbolises good fortune and luck.

Lunar New Year Update 2019
Lunar New Year Update 2022
✨ There will be upcoming Chinese New Year held on 10 February 2024, which is Year of Wood Dragon. ✨
Recently I opened The Sims 4 game again on Steam --- Yes The Sims 4 Base game is free of purchase on Steam --- Finally I can see soothing and relieving representation of Chinese culture in-game unlike sore eyes disaster what The Sims 3 team had done on Shang Simla for The Sims 3.
Definitely there's something positive on this representation of Lunar New Year updates for 2019 and 2022 that I can give applause to EA👏 , that this company team finally made consultation to actual Chinese (and Korean) people.
Tumblr media
Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is the most important holiday in China, and it is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and countries with a significant overseas Chinese population.
Commonly known as the Spring Festival in China, Lunar New Year is a fifteen-day celebration marked by many traditions.
Not just celebrated in China, Korea and Vietnam celebrate Lunar New Year. So yes, we celebrate New Year twice, Gregorian New Year (1 January) and Lunar New Year (10 February, China Year 2575) in 2024.
I can only review about the Chinese New Year stuff part. I can recognize easily there's steamed fish, noodles, and Nian Gao (年糕) . And the most important part of Chinese New Year is....
🧧 Red Envelope (紅包)🧧
🧧 Hóng Bāo in Mandarin Chinese language.
🧧 Ang Pao in Hokkien Chinese language.
Who doesn't love money? You Westerners like money, don't you? On Christmas Day, Westerners have tradition to give wrapped present gift to people.
In Chinese New Year, we're Chinese people have tradition of giving Red Envelope with money inside the envelope. The person who give Hong Bao at Chinese New Year event is from married person to unmarried family members.
Wrapping lucky money in red envelopes is expected to bestow more happiness and blessings on the receivers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's addition of Round Table, Red Envelopes on Kumquat Tree and Orange fruit with Red Envelope on box. Yes Chinese culture is all about being prosperous and giving money gift in Red Envelope. I can tell you the representation is very good and authentic to us Chinese people that we can relate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can tell you team who worked in this update made consultation to Chinese people, that there are Han Zi (Chinese writing). 無魚不成席 which translates as "No Feast Without Fish" . Fish makes important meal in Chinese dining.
Tumblr media
Here is more addition info:
Fish — an Increase in Prosperity
Tumblr media
In Chinese, "fish" (鱼 Yú /yoo/) sounds like 'surplus'. Fish is a traditional Chinese New Year dish on the Chinese New Year dinner menu. Chinese people always like to have a surplus at the end of the year, because they think if they have managed to save something at the end of the year, then they can make more in the next year.
Steamed fish is one of the most famous Chinese New Year recipes. What fish should be chosen for the New Year dinner is based on auspicious homophonics.
Crucian carp: As the first character of 'crucian carp' (鲫鱼 jìyú /jee-yoo/) sounds like the Chinese word 吉 (jí /jee/ 'good luck'), eating crucian carp is considered to bring good luck for the next year.
Chinese mud carp: The first part of the Chinese for "mud carp" (鲤鱼 lǐyú /lee-yoo/) is pronounced like the word for gifts (礼 lǐ /lee/). So Chinese people think eating mud carp during the Chinese New Year symbolizes wishing for good fortune.
Catfish: The Chinese for "catfish" (鲶鱼 niányú /nyen-yoo/) sounds like 年余 (nián yú) meaning 'year surplus'. So eating catfish is a wish for a surplus in the year.
Eating two fish, one on New Year's Eve and one on New Year's Day, (if written in a certain way) sounds like a wish for a surplus year-after-year.
If only one catfish is eaten, eating the upper part of the fish on New Year's Eve and the remainder on the first day of the new year can be spoken with the same homophonic meaning.
Fish is an auspicious Chinese New Year symbol.
Glutinous Rice Cake — a Higher Income or Position
Tumblr media
Chinese New Year cakes
Glutinous rice cake (年糕 Niángāo /nyen-gaoww/) is a lucky food eaten on Chinese New Year's Eve. In Chinese, glutinous rice cake sounds like it means "getting higher year-on- by year". In Chinese people's minds, this means the higher you are the more prosperous your business is a general improvement in life. The main ingredients of niangao are sticky rice, sugar, chestnuts, Chinese dates, and lotus leaves.
Longevity Noodles — Happiness and Longevity
Tumblr media
Longevity noodles (长寿面 Chángshòu Miàn /chung-show myen/) unsurprisingly symbolize a wish for longevity. Their length and unsevered preparation are also symbolic of the eater's life.
It is a lucky food eaten on Chinese New Year Day in North China.
They are longer than normal noodles and uncut, either fried and served on a plate, or boiled and served in a bowl with their broth.
Good Fortune Fruit — Fullness and Wealth
Tumblr media
Certain fruits are eaten during the Chinese New Year period, such as tangerines and oranges, and pomeloes. They are selected as they are particularly round and "golden" in color, symbolizing fullness and wealth, but more obviously for the lucky sound they bring when spoken.
Eating and displaying tangerines and oranges is believed to bring good luck and fortune due to their pronunciation, and even writing. The Chinese for orange (and tangerine) is 橙 (chéng /chnng/), which sounds the same as the Chinese for 'success' (成). One of the ways of writing tangerine (桔 jú /jyoo/) contains the Chinese character for luck (吉 jí /jee/).
Chinese Dumplings — Wealth
Tumblr media
With a history of more than 1,800 years, dumpling (饺子 Jiǎozi /jyaoww-dzrr/) is a classic lucky food for new year, and a traditional dish eaten on Chinese New Year's Eve, widely popular in China, especially in North China.
Chinese dumplings can be made to look like Chinese silver ingots (which are not bars, but boat-shaped, oval, and turned up at the two ends). Legend has it that the more dumplings you eat during the New Year celebrations, the more money you can make in the New Year.
Source: LinkedIn by Manette Chen
Tumblr media
As for fashion... I'm not woman so I am not expert about women fashion, I can tell this clothing is not Chinese Qi Pao. My girlfriend and female family members do not wear that kind of Qi Pao. This is more like Ao Dai, Vietnamese traditional dress. There's skirt beneath dress. Source: Wikipedia
Tumblr media
The rest of clothing is typical modernized clothing, which is much more realistic because we Chinese when at Chinese New Year gathering we wear red coloured modern clothing and not dress like in ancient times. Usually kids who wear Qi Pao because they are very cute to dress like that.

Right after the New Year, I threw in a couple of shirts and a hoodie and left for Hong Kong because like what I told you, I will be on a working trip. Meaning, I will buy merchandise that my cousin, Jay, and sister-in-law, Belle will peddle at their Lazada and Shopee pages.
It's a long list of things to purchase mostly ready-to-wear clothes, chocolates, house items, lotions, and perfume among others. since this is Hong Kong, expect the prices to be lower compared to Manila since they are tax-free. I also pre-purchased extra baggage weight on the flight back home, while those I cannot bring, will have it shipped door to door.
at the immigration desk, the officer asked why I frequent HK since last year saw me visiting the island twice. of course, I was at my best behavior for fear of being offloaded. I explained that I am a reseller and I travel to buy "paninda"
"Dual citizen ka?" as he ran my information at the counter.
"yes po, ROC Taiwan" and handed him my other passport to verify.
"magkano dala mong pera?" this time, I was already getting annoyed. but then again, being offloaded is such a hot mess, I decided to give all the info he asked.
"$1000 USD and the rest sa credit card po"
he stamped my passport and I was done with immigration.
by the way, the ticket was scored at a budget airline's seat sale. No issue with me. as long as I get to my destination and back home, I don't mind except that this passenger planted his big ass on my designated seat and started to do a Facebook live.
"excuse po, dyan yung upuan ko"
"huh? puedeng dito nalang ako?"
"hinde. umalis ka"
"ang sungit"
you know when you get to my age, you feel that certain amount of authority that when you exert it, no amount of effort is given, it comes naturally. I paid extra for my seat, unless you are fucking Piolo Pascual I would give in but then he's not. Besides, I don't think Piolo flies budget airline to begin with.
a couple of hours, we landed safe. I took the train from HKIA to Central and from Central another train to TST or Tsim Sha Tsui where our favorite hotel is located (Caritas Bianchi Hotel) it is affordable and best of all, the rooms are clean and spacious, unlike those damn cramped hotels in the city.
Hungry, I had beef brisket noodles and it was so so so good...it's like eating pares, nasta masarap sya. then I walked towards MongKok because I wanted to buy the dyowa some decent sneakers since the one's he is using has seen better days.
so there. I hope you guys are all safe and happy.

Teach me that word
English is not my native tongue so if you see any grammar mistakes sorry! This is my personal head-cannon that Kim really likes older partners, I don't know where it came from or why I just really dig it so I went with it. The reader character is gender neutral, as always, and is part of the KorTac (non-military branch)
Unlike most of his teammates Kim didn't mind the med bay. He had his laptop with him, the amenities, pretty and nice staff and a good view.
And most of all he got visits from you. He looked at the clock on his laptop and exactly on the dot he heard your footsteps enter his room. He shuffled a bit up his bed and prepared for your attack. Not a second to soon he was smothered into your warm arms.
"Hi handsome! How was your day? Is your leg doing better?" He knew better then to try and answer now. Kim felt your kisses on his face, your soft hands in his hair, on his cheeks. He melted into the attention you were giving him. No amount of gambling ever felt this fulfilling. He regretted not putting his laptop away in time, since it now occupied his hands and not your supple flesh.
You moving away gave him the opportunity to shuffle the laptop onto the nightstand and get his hands on you. A moment later he felt your lips on his fingertips and even after all the time spent together he still felt his cheeks turn pink.
Oh and that smile you gave him, you exactly knew what you were doing to him. You took his hands and cupped them so gently and put your face in his hands. Your eyes sparkled with mischief and he felt his face redden more.
"Kiiiiim~ What was that word you loooooved me to call you from now on?" Oh no, he knew where this was going and he quickly tried to distract you with kisses and snugs. The laugh and snort that came out of you were going to be filed in his mind forever and engraved for when he was on deployment.
Once he pulled away from you, Kim just looked at you. Your lips were plump from the kisses, your eyes while glazed still shined with mischief and oh your cheeks. They were the prettiest glow on this Earth. He wanted to frame this moment forever.
He felt your hand on his tight, and the rubbing was definitely supposed to be more than innocent. "So, the word Kiiim~"
With a laugh and a huff and folded himself into you, his head in the crook of your neck breathing in your wondaful scent. "S..ang..m" It was more a mumble and he knew you would not let this go, but he would try to distract you with his hands on your waist and kisses on your neck.
The hum you let out was music to Kim's ears. The hand on his tight was still rubbing circles into it and the hand on his back moved to his hair.
The pull was unexpected but thrilling. He was forced to meet your eyes and your smiling face. "The word Kim Hong-jin. I want to hear it, now please." And who was he to deny you.
"Seobangnim." The word held so much meaning to him, he wanted it to be real, he wanted you to say yes. But the damn pain meds and exhaustion made him spill it before he could do it properly. You deserved the whole nine yards of romance and fuck it you were getting it, if it was the last thing he was doing.
He watched your face for recognition of the word, but found none. He both felt relieved and anxious. You were not a person to be kept in the dark, you loved knowing and learning.
He could see you silently try to word it out. "Songbangnim?" The questioning tilt to your voice as cute, the downward look of uncertainty and a bit of shame for not getting it the first time was doing something to him. It was fraying his last threads of sanity and all he wanted was for you to be part of him now and forever.
Kim worded it out slowly, and let you repeat it as many times as you wanted to. With every repeat he felt his heart clench and he swore he felt his eyes mist, your hand never stopped rubbing the circles in his tight. His hands now on your neck and thumbs rubbing your cheeks mid word attempt.
"You are doing so good, aein." Kim couldn't resist anymore he kissed you with everything he couldn't say now. He wanted to make it special, needed to. You deserved it.
Before you could speak he mumbled into your lips. "I have a few weeks off due to my leg here. I should be out next Saturday how about we go out on a date and I explain to you in detail what the word means?"
"I'll hold you to that Mr. Handsome~"
Seobangnim - husband
Aein - sweetheart and it is supposed to be gender-neutral (hopefully google did not lie to me)
