I think this is probably supposed to parallel how aono felt about his mom. When we saw her full body she looked so similar to kariya's former appearance, too (mostly the long black hair). And the way that he's talking about his achievements (I did good on the test, I know how to play this song on the piano, etc) feels like something a neglected kid would say to their parent.

All that said, writing endings is hard and I started physical therapy a couple weeks back after a back injury, which is kicking. my. ass. Haven't been this tired in a while, so that on top of a work conference coming up next week means I am indeed, firstly and primarily focused on taking care of myself....even if I am secondly focused on chipping away at comment replies and squeezing in a little bit of writing/editing every day, lol. Zoro and Nami have adapted to Luffy’s way of doing things a little too well

I told myself I wouldn’t point this stuff out every single time, but I just really enjoy and admire the subtle characterization Oda gives Zoro. Zoro is not a character who will ever tell people about himself, so Oda has to reveal his personality little by little by little. And here, telling Usopp to take care of his injuries, we see Zoro is a caring and observant person, he’s managing the battle and its aftermath in his mind, and he’s filling in as the leader now that Luffy is temporarily out of commission.

Well, does this ONE LINE really say all that? Not exactly. But this is the stuff I notice as I re-read, that these traits are very consistent even from such early chapters. It’s not just Zoro, either. Even as each member of the crew develops and grows over time there are certain traits that are scattered into casual lines or drawn into backgrounds that remain constant throughout the series.

almost done with arkham unhinged and all i can think about with each of these 58 digital exclusive chapters is that they were a dollar a piece and how thats still too steep

Superstitious pigeons

I was taking one of those history quiz things online, when I got (and correctly answered) this question:

I've said before that the dove (and pigeon) is used as a symbol for the soul. Our earl even has that Waterhouse painting of St. Eulalia in his art collection which features one flying away (follow the spear that's pointing up), symbolically taking the martyr's soul to heaven.

Reapers use them as messengers. We've seen William with one (ch30), and Othello even keeps at least one under his lab coat when he's in the human realm (ch149). I've posted at least twice before (<- second link has more info on interpreting that painting) how I theorize these dove/pigeon messengers might not be regular doves/pigeons but special messenger souls in dove/pigeon form.

How interesting is it that pigeons (and presumably doves, too) display superstitious behaviors?

Reading up on B. F. Skinner, psychologist and prolific author, I'm thinking his work might have been at least somewhat influential in the formation of Yana-san's version of the reaper realm. 🧐 Some of his work even reminds me of how Undertaker has forced reanimated corpses to act like living humans without their souls... being driven not by souls or "free will" but by a form of conditioning (in this case "episodes" taken from their own cinematic records). 🤔 🤔
