random but that episode where it’s revealed to ms bustier that chloe’s been having sabrina do all her homework for most of their lives -> i truly do not believe that they were trying to make fun of chloe for having a learning disability. in fact I don’t think they were trying to assert that she had any sort of disability at all, to me it was more so commentary on like. corruption. aka how the Rich have so much money and power that it ends up shooting themselves in the foot and they and their children and generational wealth pushes out people who don’t apply themselves. because if you can buy up the inventions of smart poor people, why bother being smart yourself? many easy irl examples that parallel the situation here but yeah I felt marinette standing up being like hey why the fuck are we going out of our way for her is essentially them saying we shouldn’t make excuses for how the 1% operates, and give them concessions when the 99% who actually need it get overlooked. obviously you don’t have to interpret it that way but ngl take one look at astruc’s retweets (or idk the state of society) and tell me he wasn’t trying to make a comment about capitalism

hi again 👋👋👋 anyway i would LOVE to hear any thoughts you might have about fake pep and his interactions with other characters if you're amenable to that! i love him and there is So Much going on there and you always have stellar hcs so id love to hear them!!
Ive been shying away from drawing/writing anything with fake peppino bc frankly ur right; there IS so much going on with him 😭 so much so that it almost feels impossible to settle on something concrete 😭 This is also bc I link Fake Peppi and Pizzahead together, which means I also have to work on characterizing that punk 😭😭😭 But I will still try to get my thoughts out
(OKAY THIS IS REM FROM THE FUTURE OR PAST OR SOMETHING AND IM HERE TO SAY THAT I RAMBLED SO FUCKING LONG THAT I DIDNT EVEN GET TO THE ACTUAL ASK OF THIS FUCKING ASK!!! I JUST TALKED ABOUT FAKE PEPPI AND DIDNT WRITE A SINGLE INTERACTION. SO UM. THIS ASK IS NOW ABOUT FAKE PEPPI AND ONLY FAKE PEPPI IM SO SORRY 😭😭😭😭😭 ILL GO MORE IN DEPTH W DYNAMICS N SUCH SOME DAY BUT NOT TODAY)
Fake Peppino is Not the first clone; hes one of the Last ones Pizzahead worked on. The ones you see in the war level are the closest, appearance wise, to Peppino, but they arent the brightest and will often behave like [insert test subject] but with Peppinos face on it. The emphasis on appearance first resulted in some physically identical, but otherwise, dull witted clones.
Fake Peppi was the first attempt at replicating Peppinos actual personality over appearance and it works moderately well, its just that. Hes a little funky lookin. Which is okay! Its the first attempt !! He’ll get more time to try again! They give Fake Peppi a little run down shop to manage (that he almost immediately converts into a pizzeria) while they work on perfecting the clones. But then Peppino actually storms the tower after being threatened w the Pizzeria Begone Beam, and hes tearing through portals so quickly that Pizzahead literally has No Time to try and work on these new clones. Fake Peppi is the First of this new experimental line of clones, and hes one of the Last. (Said bc i do intend on making my own little peppi clone someday heehee)
Fake Peppi passes as a pretty Normal creature. Hes a bit Tall but not absurdly above average. I drew him pretty goopy and lanky on my first (and only ) attempt at drawing him, but the more i think about it, the more I want him to just be a taller, slightly offputting Peppino. I like the idea someone had of Fake Peppi mimicking the stylized, cartoonish logo design of the pizzeria, so hes got a bit of a doofy lookin face. Its very round, with soft looking eyes and permanent blush on his cheeks. When hes trying to look Less Scary (bc he is a bit aware now that hes a little Off), you can see his mouth on his face like a Normal person. When hes relaxed and/or unfocused, it kind of just. Disappears. It makes his face look kind of like a little butt or a peach heehee
Fake Peppi acts pretty similarly to Real Peppino. Hes quick to anger, and quick to frighten. Hes a bit of a goof and he likes to entertain (which completely threw pizzahead off; hes like thats. Not right? Is it??). He has more or less the same mental capacity as Peppino, shares similar skills and hobbies, and enjoys the same kinds of food that Peppino does (with mild variation). Hes very relaxed and easygoing with a tendency to act a fool and be a little playful, which leads Pizzahead to believe that despite what hes personally seen (from stalking this poor man), Peppino is Also inherently a bit of a fool and a little playful and also capable of being relaxed and easygoing.
Fake Peppi is prone to the same kind of anxiety and panic attacks that Peppino has, only he does not have decades of experience with them to know how to manage it. So the time he spends with Pizzahead is Not the smoothest. The combination of Just Being Created and having Crippling Panic Attacks leaves him with an almost Blank Slate, memory wise, by the time hes left with the pizzeria. When Pizzahead visits Fake Peppi again to give him the lift key; hes basically a stranger to him :0
(Peppino tries to help with some grounding techniques for panic attacks, but since they Both default to self soothing stims, hes not that much help 😭)
Conversations are as smooth as they can be with his garbled speech; he can understand what hes being told, and he will write down what he Wants to say with pen and paper. Eventually, he ‘upgrades’ to a phone with proper text to speech, so he uses that quite often. I know the backwards speech is canon (or at the very least extremely popular) but its very hard for me to read and parse in my head, so i am deciding against that 😭
Hes hard to understand bc despite having a similar vocal pitch to Peppino (a bit high), it rubberbands in a way that makes it sound incredibly croakey and scratchy. The more excitable he is, the more incoherent he becomes. With (immense) effort, he can speak clearly, but its almost as difficult as someone trying to suppress their stutter; hes much more comfortable using his phone to talk. I can see him learning sign language at some point; Peppino does Not know sign language but he IS capable of learning, which means Fake Peppi is Also capable of learning.
Overall Fake Peppi is Peppino with enough variance to give him his own personality. Some of the things he does shines a bit of a light on Peppinos personality; its like, if Peppino DIDNT have to struggle with a failing business and crippling debt and being drafted into a fucking war, what kind of Peppino would you get? And as a surprise to Pizzahead, its a relatively sweet and goofy guy!! And if he took the time to interact with the Real Peppino instead of an idealized version of him (like pepperman and vigilante have started doing) then he would see that. Oh well.

b’elanna’s banana pancakes
hello tumblr. it’s been a while since i did some star trek meta. but i’ve just been on a prodigy kick lately and that inevitably brings me back to voyager where i’ve spent some time before unpacking a lot of writing decisions and politics surrounding them. today i want to talk about the most inane detail i could fixate on in b’elanna’s characterization, and this thought hasn’t left me in years so i think maybe i should share it with the class. maybe it will mean something to someone else the way it does to me.
b’elanna’s favorite comfort food is banana pancakes. when she’s feeling down she asks neelix to replicate them for her, and it’s kind of a running staple in moments where b’elanna is feeling emotionally vulnerable. it’s a cute detail, but over the years i’ve turned the detail over and over and wished, pointlessly, that i could somehow go back in time and edit that writing decision and change b’elanna’s favorite pickup meal to something else: fried plantain. if you’re not familiar with latin american cuisine, plantain are a common staple in a lot of dishes but i am specifically to ripe plantain, fried until it’s golden brown and caramelized. it goes by different names depending on the country but it’s a surprisingly widespread dish. there’s even equivalents in west african and southeast asian countries and if you haven’t tried it this is the friendliest recommendation to taste the food of the gods before the end of your life.
i’ll admit the context for this obsession is selfish. i’m latin american, specifically costa rican, and when i watched voyager i couldn’t help but latch on to roxann dawson’s portrayal of a broken, abandoned young woman who learns to love herself and accept the love of others in her life when given the nurturing and patience she deserved all along. this wasn’t just because her character is beautiful in its own right, but because i identified with her as a latin american woman. i could spend a good amount of time talking about the standards of womanhood that i was subjected to growing up latin american but this post is not about that, so i’m going to summarize one of the things that makes b’elanna so important to me as a female latin american character very briefly: it’s her emotional complexity and the compassion with which all her emotions, including the anger and the trauma, are treated while portrayed as a latina character. i wish more than anything i had grown up watching voyager for this specific reason, and now that i’ve actually watched it i feel like a piece of my puzzle has been filled in, and i’m a little closer to whole. which is why it’s all the more curious that b’elanna isn’t exactly written as a latin american character in the first place.
star trek is a very american franchise, written by very american writers, and, with some notable exceptions, very white, cishet, male writers. it’s been talked to death how star trek’s vision of a multicultural world becomes seriously impaired by the lack of diversity in its leading creatives. today i specifically want to address how the franchise has been since its inception, and still is, limiting its potential by how the american cultural zeitgeist dominates its development. it’s a specifically white american zeitgeist, too. the human world regardless of the ethnicity of its members gets steamrolled into a very colorblind world where apparently humans now pride ourselves on our acceptance and embracing of different nations but we are only ever shown cultural expressions consistent with the experiences of modern day white americans. it’s even clearer in the writing of characters of color, like harry kim or geordi laforge, over white non americans like miles o’brien or malcolm reed. there have been exceptions, most notably in the writing of sisko’s family, but for the most part characters of color are not ever shown engaging in any activities that might have been passed down from non white american heritage. this is true even for characters who aren’t even supposed to be american, like uhura who’s meant to be from kenya. it’s not just a disappointment to the core values that the franchise is meant to stand by but also a waste of writing potential and even a loss in what could be a way to connect to potential fans from all over the globe.
back to me, because this post was made because of the very selfish reason that feel like i just need b’elanna to connect a little bit more to me. to my upbringing. i call it selfish because it’s not as clean cut a writing decision as it i make it out to be. latin americans, diaspora or otherwise, are not a monolith even in the 21st century. john torres and his family show again the limitations the writers run into with their limited worldview and they don’t seem to hold on to latin american traditions or cultural heritage. and furthermore, b’elanna herself has mixed feelings on her klingon heritage already but that doesn’t mean that the heritage passed down by the father who abandoned her would be that much easier to embrace. and yet in my mind i can just see little b’elanna eagerly devouring slices of fried plantain made by her father on rare occasions and feeling so utterly loved after being starved so many times of his affection because he shared something with her about himself and made her feel cherished with it. and that nostalgia for that tiny spark of love she felt so many years ago being fanned and set ablaze when her new family learns how to cheer her up with this little gesture that recognizes her roots.
it wouldn’t exactly be an uncomplicated portrayal, it’s not like i want my favorite dish to be equated with deadbeat dads and their shitty racist against klingons families. but i’m just reminded of jacob geller’s discussion on bj blazkowicz’s jewish heritage in the recent wolfenstein video game series. “i just want some recognition that he’s connected to me.” it would mean the world to me, too.

Anomaly thing Makoto and ever unnerved out junko (who can also reincarnate but not as herself) ough
Like. Imagine you kill this guy ok, you kill him, you watched his body be crushed. He’s dead and you ship off one of his body parts to a fan which is probably your undoing.
The mood in the school is somber and despair filling, they try to pick up the pieces but they’re not really motivated. The detective is but she can’t rally the others to care about the mystery it’s great you’ve basically won.
Then the detective leaves, you and the others can’t find her for a day or two. Then all of sudden she returned not alone, the body of boy you watch be crushed broken to bits hell your that chopped him up abit and then burned his remains. You KNOW he died, everyone watched him die. He’s back like nothing ever happened, he’s abit dirty but he is ALIVE. How is that possible.
You don’t know if your gut is filled with despair or something else.. fear? Unease?
Worst is no one else seems to care, they way they’re acting is like they never watched him get crushed in the first place, it’s like they saw the hatch swallow him whole instead. They’re in denial.
Yet they still follow and cling onto his very words including in the final trial, you don’t remember him being this like this in your normal liked sure he was influential but not like This.
As the conveyor belt slowly drags you towards your demise you two have a staring contest. You lose because he never blinks. Only an unblinking smile with some teeth bids you goodbye.
When you wake up again one of the first things your given for your fourth birthday. Is a sweet smile of plushie, in his ugly hoodie and blazer combo. His stitched hazel eyes staring you down, overwhelming you went a sense of unease that you drop the toy and begin to cry.

I spend a lot of time thinking about food: what it means to us, how it shapes us, and the role it plays in communities and relationships. The two questions I ask my loved ones most are 'have you eaten' and 'what are you cooking?' I ask those questions because food represents so much: care, nourishment, love, health, location, history, identity. I ask those questions because I truly believe that food makes us who we are.
I am so excited to announce a project that focuses on the food that shapes us. Announcing The Personal Canons Cookbook, an essay series discussing food, identity, and community. Submissions are open now! You can find full details at this link, but here’s the bouillon:
~1000 words on food that has shaped you
Plus a recipe (which I’m happy to help with if you don’t prefer recipe-writing)
$150 payment on acceptance
BIPOC and non-US contributors strongly encouraged!
The Personal Canons Cookbook will run throughout 2023. I can’t wait to share it with you all. I have some really exciting authors and artists lined up to participate in this series. I can’t share details just yet, but I can confirm that they are absolutely electrifying. This series will be free to read, but Stone Soup Supper Club subscribers will get early recipe access, bonus content, and (if I get enough paying subscribers to afford it) a Stone Soup Recipe Collection at the end of the year with every recipe Stone Soup has ever shared.
I’m currently offering a 25% discount on paid subscriptions to the Supper Club, because I really, really want to be able to afford to put that cookbook together. I hope you’ll consider supporting the project and joining the Supper Club community! Either way, I can’t wait to see what you all have to say about whether you’ve eaten and what you’re cooking. Submissions close Dec 31.
Here’s that link again for you: Let’s get cooking.
