Terracing has been used for centuries to help prevent fire, moderate temperatures, and make farming possible even when water is scarce.
Surrounded by the waters of the Strait of Sicily in the far south of Italy, the island of Pantelleria is made up of 32 square miles of black volcanic rocks with no source of freshwater other than the 16 or so inches of rain that fall each year. Yet, traces of the first farming terrace on the island date back to the Bronze Age, 16 centuries B.C. On such terraces, Zibibbo grapevines grow in hollows to trap moisture near their roots. The olive orchards are low, too; and capers, the other major local crop, stick out from dry stone walls.
These walls stretch in lines of stacked stones without the use of cement or mortar. They hold up beds of soil and create terraces, strips of flat land along slopes. These structures store heat during the day, and at night, when the sea breeze encounters the warmth of their surface, moisture condenses and forms dew. The stones help channel these precious tiny water drops into the wall’s drainage system and distribute them to the thirsty soil.
On this Mediterranean island, as in other parts of Italy and the world, architects, researchers, agronomists, and other professionals have rediscovered the value of ancient farming practices like terracing for resilience to climate extremes and preservation of biodiversity and cultural heritage. As climate change makes water scarce across the Mediterranean, traditional farming practices from areas with little water, like Pantelleria, might provide solutions.
“We can learn from it, without being traditionalist, romantic, or nostalgic, but actually looking at our future,” says Giorgia De Pasquale, an architect, researcher, and assistant professor at Roma Tre University who grew up in Pantelleria. “We can find some innovation skills that respect at the same time the balance of our ecosystems and the environment.”
Geographers estimate that terraces once covered between 200,000 and 300,000 hectares of the Italian peninsula. But currently only what remains over about 170,000 hectares is still visible from maps and satellite images; Pantelleria is the most terraced municipality. De Pasquale compared aerial maps from 1955 and 2016 and found roughly a quarter of rural areas were abandoned, mostly terraces. Out of the nearly 5,900 terraced hectares on Pantelleria, less than half are currently in use.
“Since the 1950s onward, we have lost especially farming terraced areas,” says De Pasquale, “mostly in favor of woods.”
Terraces require heavy labor that cannot be easily mechanized and have largely fallen out of use, despite their popularity across nearly every continent. But the undergoing climate crisis has revitalized terracing as a valuable form of adaptation both in places where rainfall is increasing or intensifying, as well as places it is decreasing, according to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on solutions for land degradation.
Cultivated terraces offer a multitude of environmental benefits in addition to water retention. In Pantelleria, for example, an instance of arson in 2016 further highlighted the importance of well-maintained terraces. The flames burned an area two and a half times the size of Central Park around Montagna Grande, Pantelleria’s highest relief, and Mount Gibele, just a few months before most of the island would become a national park. But in some central parts of the island, farmed terraces stopped the fire’s advance.
“In the Monastero valley, only the top of the hill had been affected by the fire,” says Graziella Pavia, a local agronomist who previously served as agriculture councilor for the municipal government. “Flames stopped at the foothill, because then they could find only cultivated land, and it’s very difficult for cultivated plots to burn.”
Terraces can also help with weather events, such as flooding, that become more likely under climate change.
“We are noticing extreme rain events and, at the same time, prolonged drought periods,” says Alessandro Sardella, a geologist at the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate of Italy’s National Research Council, where he works as a researcher in the unit focusing on the conservation of cultural heritage.
“Nicely manicured strips of land with well-maintained walls hold better chances to reduce the risk of erosion, the risk of landslides due to these extreme events, as well as favor water infiltration and act as a buffer for these long [drought] periods,” he says.
But when stonewalls are neglected, they do little to help and may, in fact, exacerbate collapses, erosion, and even fires when they are covered in dry vegetation. For the past four years, Sardella, together with the nonprofit Dotteolie and the CNR-ISAC, has organized initiatives to restore the terraces of the Aeolian Islands, an archipelago higher up along Italy’s boot, where about 90% of the existing terraces is estimated to be abandoned. He has run workshops with locals and landowners on how to build or repair stone walls using traditional techniques along with partners like the Italian segment of the International Terraced Landscapes Alliance.
ITLA was formed in China in 2010 to connect people working on terracing, from farmers to builders, architects, academics, and activists, to shed light on the challenges these rural landscapes face and ways to revive them. Since then, it has grown to 315 members from 35 countries and has gathered three times, including once in 2019 in Madeira and the Canary Islands, which share certain farming techniques with Pantelleria.
Pavia says these congresses are an important way to share ideas about how to keep farming terraces alive. “It encourages comparisons and the exchange of common solutions, drawing on others’ experiences,” she says.
She believes Mediterranean islands have a lot to teach in terms of resiliency, being set apart from more complex supply systems. “Of course, we had some very bad years too,” she says. “All the island suffered a lot.” But she holds out hope the terraces will help them survive future dry spells. Such farming techniques, developed in places with few resources, offer important hints for the future, she says. “As I see it, terraces might let us preserve the landscape as well as feed us at a micro and localized level.”

IMAGES: Italian Air Force conducts Elephant Walk with F-35 fighters after important flight hours mark
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 08/05/2022 - 12:00 PM in Military
The 13th Flight Group of the Italian Air Force, with the F-35A and F-35B aircraft, reached the prestigious 10,000-hour flight mark after only six years of operations and air missions carried out at home and abroad and carried out an Elephant Walk maneuver with its jets.
Tumblr media
It was December 12, 2016 when for the first time an F-35 aircraft was assigned to an operational department outside the United States. The first F-35A landed at Amendola airport, thus starting the operational life of the 5th generation "omnirole" aircraft in Italy and Europe. Today, just over 5 years later, the F-35 aircraft of the 32nd Wing reached the important 10,000-hour flight mark.
Tumblr media
After having reached 5,000 flight hours in less than two years, incessant national and international commitments have seen the air power of the 32nd Wing project in all its possible forms on more than one continent: from the Baltics to the deserts of the USA and the Middle East, from Iceland to the Aegean Sea, to participation in many international aeronautical shows.
Tumblr media
This important milestone has also been marked by numerous national and international training events. The Perfect Storm aimed at the integration of 4th and 5th generation weapons systems, and in which they participated in the various editions of Eurofighter, G-550 CAEW, Tornado and Predator. Astral Knight 21, an "important exercise" that aims to strengthen the coordination and interoperability activities of air, sea and land capabilities, increasing command and control integration. Falcon Strike 21, an ad hoc exercise adapted to the 5th Generation, designed at Amendola Air Base and particularly appreciated by all participating nations.
Tumblr media
However, it is worth mentioning the numerous training activities that the F-35B carried out on the island of Pantelleria, which made it possible to consolidate the air expeditionary capabilities of the Italian armed forces by simulating redistribution in the so-called naked/austere bases (with reduced technical and logistical support). The joint activities carried out with the Navy F-35B aboard the aircraft carrier Cavour and the F-35B of the US Marine Corps (USMC) aboard the HMC Queen Elizabeth, aircraft carrier of the British Navy, deserve special mention, as well as the Thunder exercise carried out in Iceland a few days ago, which ratified - in fact - the first foreign redistribution of the omnirole aircraft in the STOVL (Short Take Off and Vertical Landing) version in remote areas and semi/non-permissive environments characterized by harsh climates, with the use of a package of rapid intervention forces with minimal logistical impact.
Tumblr media
The then 32nd Wing, which has contributed to the Air Defense of Italy since March 2018, has also participated since January 27, 2022 in NATO's QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) service, in defense of Airspace on the east flank of the Atlantic Alliance, as a stage of the route aiming to achieve Total Operational Capacity (FOC).
Tumblr media
Pilot Colonel Roberto Massarotto, Commander of the 32nd Wing, in congratulating the entire Department for what has been achieved, pointed out that "the symbolic stages are only an opportunity to celebrate the concrete objectives to be pursued. Daily life becomes measurable also through the celebration of these moments. The indisputable professionalism and promptness shown, often behind the scenes, are functional to make the Armed Forces an increasingly cohesive and increasingly effective institution, at the service of the citizen and the whole country. "
Tumblr media
The 32nd Wing is employed by the Combat Forces Command (CFC) of Milan, whose assigned mission is to acquire and maintain the operational readiness of all air defense and attack and reconnaissance agencies, providing the operational efficiency of weapons, vehicle and materials systems, as well as personnel training and constant updating and optimization of operational procedures. The CFC refers to the Air Squadron Command that performs the functions of training, preparation and operational readiness of its Departments, so that they acquire and maintain the required levels of operational readiness.
Tumblr media
After reaching the Initial Operational Capacity (IOC), which occurred in 2018, the wing has participated, since 2019, in NATO Air Policing Operations outside national borders. Since February 2020, the 32nd Wing is the only Department on the European scene that jointly uses both the F-35A (CTOL) and the F-35B (STOVL), contributing, with the 5th generation aircraft, to the expeditionary air capacity of the Italian Armed Forces. In addition, using the MQ1-C and MQ9-A Remotely Piloted Aircraft (APR), the Department performs ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Recognition and Acquisition of Targets) missions, both national and coalition. Finally, through the MB-339 aircraft, the 32nd Wing completes pilot training to maintain an adequate operational level in traditional piloted aircraft.

Matthias Schoenaerts and Ralph Fiennes in A Bigger Splash (Luca Guadagnino, 2015) Cast: Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson, Lily McMenamy, Aurore Clément, Elena Bucci, Corrado Guzzanti. Screenplay: David Kajganich, based on a novel by Alain Page and a screenplay by Jean-Claude Carrière and Jacques Deray. Cinematography: Yorick Le Saux. Production design: Maria Djurkovic. Film editing: Walter Fasano. Director Luca Guadagnino made his own bigger splash in 2017 with Call Me by Your Name, but his film called A Bigger Splash attracted admiring reviews two years earlier. Guadagnino has said that the two films and his 2009 I Am Love constitute a "Desire" trilogy. Erotic intrigue is at the heart of A Bigger Splash, which deals not with the eternal triangle so much as a fatal quadrangle. Marianne (Tilda Swinton), a rock star, is recuperating from a throat operation on the island of Pantelleria with her lover, Paul (Matthias Schoenaerts), a documentary filmmaker, when her former lover, a music promoter named Harry (Ralph Fiennes), arrives with his daughter, Penelope (Dakota Johnson). Neither Marianne nor Paul is especially pleased by having guests intrude on their solitude, especially since she has been ordered not to speak for a while. Marianne's voice problem is not the only sign of damage in the four characters: Paul is a recovering alcoholic who once attempted suicide, Harry is a manic egotist, and Penelope is a 17-year-old pretending to be 22 and -- we discover later -- speaks fluent Italian, a fact she chooses to hide from the others. She also lives with her mother in the States and neither she nor Harry knew of each other's existence until recently. There is a queasy touch of incestuousness to Harry's attentions to Penelope. Guadagnino and his actors keep the tension among the four characters at a low simmer for most of the film, and even after things reach the boiling point, the film deftly avoids melodramatic excess. Fiennes, usually a more reserved actor, gives an uncharacteristically flamboyant performance as Harry. The film oddly feels a little dated, like a French or Italian film from the 1960s, such as Jacques Deray's La Piscine (1969), the first film version of Alain Page's novel.

Good Mansion Wines Marks 10 Years of Serving Italian Food Imports to Region
Tumblr media
Good Mansion Wines (GMW) is now celebrating 10 years of importing the best in Italian foods just in time for holiday shopping. “This holiday season we are featuring the largest inventory of imports that we’ve ever had,” said Dominick Cerrone, owner of the wine shop that has grown into so much more. It began in 2013, when Cerrone imported his first monocultivar (single olive) olive oil from the Marche region of Italy. “I wanted a good olive oil for my home, made from the fussy but prized Ascolana olive, and when I placed a small order of it, an explosion of interest took hold. For the first time, customers were able to get an olive oil of prized quality and distinction, rated three leaves by the definitive Italian food media Gambero Rosso, instead of the industrial products found in big box retail in the states. This was occurring during the same time as the olive oil scares in the US market, where much of the oil on shelves and grocery stores was confirmed to be neither olive nor from Italy,” he explained. Customers caught on quickly, and Cerrone realized there was a demand for procuring prized regional products throughout Italy, from balsamic vinegar to tomato products, pasta, rice and more. Establishing a direct supply chain from the grower and producer to GMW, Cerrone traveled to Italian trade shows, farms and facilities, to work with these family producers, developing very tight friendships along the way. “It’s always a very special occasion when you know and trust the people who make the food you eat. How rare is that in today’s industrial consumer model,”  he added. Good Mansion Wines has become synonymous in the Italian export market with seeking out small, fledgling family enterprises that bring distinctive, regional products to an international market for the first time. This includes working diligently to register them with the US FDA and educating consumers about them.  “This is much more than simply importing. It’s a 360-degree process for both the small Italian family producers, as well as the American consumer,” he said. According to Cerrone, in Italy, food is the culmination and primary expression of tradition and family. “Food traditions are handed down from generation to generation, innovated upon and perfected. In America, food is largely based on fads and trends, and the familial bond is weaker. Therefore, it takes lots of education and promotion to get our American customers focused away from gimmicks and fads and in touch with these hand-grown and crafted products of authenticity.” “Our first venture with olive oil was with Italian food consultant Rita Lauretti from Rome, who was just emerging onto the fledgling international export scene of small high-quality Italian foods at that time, consulting with the family company producing that oil. We worked together closely in the early years, traveling together and identifying foods of great interest to the American consumer. In fact, our company was the first that brought some products to the US market, many of which have broad exposure now in the US 10 years later,” he said.  "I started working with Dominick more than 10 years ago,” explained Lauretti, who is a food export manager in Rome. “I quickly realized that he is a pioneer of high food quality in the United States. He had the desire to import extra virgin olive oils from small producers who were awarded for their outstanding production. “Over the years, he also imported savory and sweet products that were later taken up by other importers or distributors for their unique taste: capers from Pantelleria island (Sicily), organic tomatoes from Paglione farm, (Apulia) balsamic vinegar from Acetomodena (Emilia Romagna), Pasta Mancini (Le Marche), and many, many others. He has a special touch for scouting the food goodness.” Good Mansion Wines now offers more choices than ever for gift giving or enjoying a special treat at home. There are hundreds of choices in everything from fine French chocolates, delicious Italian panettone, impressive fig products, Italian pasta and sauces. The imported foods perfectly complement the selection of fine wines, ports and dessert vintages, from all the major wine producing regions in the world. In fact, this small shop can claim the largest selection of European wines in the tri-state region. “We pride ourselves on giving Wheeling the best,” Cerrone added. “We are the US importer that was first to market for some of our Italian food imports, some of which regularly appear now on larger e-commerce sites, national food media and international shopping venues like airports through subsequent importers.” International cheeses, French pastry, craft Italian coffee and daily lunch from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. are also on the menu. Cerrone wants to offer customers a one-stop shopping site for holiday needs, comparing it to the Eataly experience available in Chicago, New York, Boston and other major cities. “I like to compare Good Mansion Wines to an entire market house, but with carefully procured and sourced products, from fresh bakery and dessert products to charcuterie and cheese items, to shelf-stable foods and wines,” he said. This makes it an attractive shopping location for regular customers from Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Columbus who drive specifically to Wheeling to get products that are not available in these larger markets. There also is an online e-commerce site that serves customers all over the US. “Our largest online markets are actually New York City and Los Angeles,” Cerrone said. Located at 95-14th St., Wheeling, Good Mansion Wines is open from 9 a.m. – 7 p.m., daily, with special hours are 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. It is closed on both Christmas and Easter days. For more information, please call 304-233-2632 or visit goodmansionwines.com. Read the full article
