I decided to finesse my desk area a bit. All the art on the walls was too cluttered for my anxious brain so I decided to simplify! I’m making a cute wall hanging (rope, cardboard and paper clay for the win!) and I can paint it to match the pink/terracotta vibe I’ve got going on once it dries overnight. Not bad for quick after-dinner project!

For my research I prefer to scavenge through books rather than relying on online google searches of the most part. I was introduced to an interesting series of books by Tutor Elaine Riordan in ceramics elective.

I am inquiring into the layering process of spices that occurs when preparing a meal. I am interested in the expanding practice of our elective and this for me took me down a road of incorporating textiles to create or re-create shapes with clay by studying various spices.

I spent a week investigating CLAY SLIP which is a material I hadn't used in the previous semesters.

As I cannot put actual spices/food into the Kiln I am experimenting with coloured slips for now.

I cut pieces of paper from the image below taken from a second book of the same series, to make a paper structure resemblance of one idea I have of layering, I am going to make this with clay.

Massa Paper Clay

Vou deixar aqui a dica uma receita que eu descobri na internet que se chama Paperclay (massa de papel).

Parece com papel machê, mas é mais moldável e permite um maior detalhamento.

A receita é a seguinte:

- 2 medidas de papel higiênico (limpo, por favor xD) triturado (Derreta-o na água pra facilitar, depois escorra o excesso de água)

- 1 medida de massa acrílica (semelhante à massa corrida, pode ser comprada em loja de tintas ou material de construção)

- 1 medida de cola PVA -

1 medida de farinha de trigo Misture tudo e amasse com as mãos até ficar homogêneo e com uma consistência de massa de pão.

A forma de trabalhar é igual à do papel machê. Depois de seca pode ser lixada, pintada diretamente, pode ser dado acabamento com massa acrílica pra alisar, etc.

Essa máscara do Scorpion foi modelada usando paperclay.

PS: A medida pode variar, o ideal é ir colocando um pouquinho de cada coisa até a consistência ficar do seu agrado PS2: É bom adicionar uma tampinha de água sanitária, vinagre ou algum desinfetante pra não dar bicho.

Week 3 | Ceramics Elective

In the first week of the ceramics elective we first created schematic type mark making using black ink on white paper by using any implement available to use as a mark making tool.

I used a feather, sponges, a piece of string, a bamboo sticks, a pipette, a syringe and a collection of plastic and soft materials wrapped tightly together.

We then made 3 viewfinders of different sizes which we used to select sections from our mark making sheets which we translated into white paper to recreate the shape within a square box template.

Working with paper first to help build and visualise your end result was a new process of design that I intend to work more with. The process of turning paper into clay is a useful skill in other areas also.
