1960 Mercury Park Lane

Mercury was a brand that had a whole lot of potential but no one to drive it home. It fell to the wayside as Ford focused energies on brands like Lincoln. Nevertheless, Park Lane was another attempt to try and influence a new generation of buyers. The styling of Park Lane was absolutely beautiful, and that’s where things get a bit complicated. Pricing for Park Lane was quite high and that turned a lot of buyers away because Mercury was entering into a completely different bracket.

A lot of aspects of the car were similar to segment stalwarts like the Impala. Nevertheless, sales were some of the worst of any Mercury model. The collector’s community has also tended to ignore Park Lane, and finding one of these in decent shape isn’t easy. Most of the early Park Lane models are either rusted away or in a museum.

Back at the new-look Promenade at The Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair, following its lengthy refurbishment. The place looks fantastic.

Raspberry lemonade mocktails

Canapes included oscietra caviar, veggie sushi, and asparagus and hollandaise

For starters, burrata with truffle, candied beetroot, artichoke and walnuts, and tuna tartare

Rosettes of sole, verjus, toasted buckwheat, charred cucumber and almonds

Halal fillet of Aberdeen Angus beef with mouselline potatoes and red onion

For dessert, baked alaska with red fruit tea ice cream and raspberry sorbet. Delicious!

Though the media also made no reference to the Service's shabby Mayfair headquarters at Leconfield House, to which it moved late in 1948, bus conductors and taxi drivers were less inhibited. A member of Registry recalls: "When you got off the bus in Park Lane the conductor would shout down the bus 'Curzon Street and MI5' and all the girls would troop off looking somewhat embarrassed! We also had to contend with some of the 'ladies of the night' in Curzon Street as Shepherds Market was a very red light district in the 60's and I think they might have thought they had some competition."
