Dead Man's Dust
Tumblr media
Intent: For preventing spirits from following you home.
Ingredients:
1 pt Chili Pepper (any type)
1 pt Salt
1 pt Basil
1 pt Garlic Powder
1⁄2 pt Dill
1⁄2 pt Lemon Peel
Optional: Add a pinch of Curry or Cumin for extra oomph.
Note: Powdered versions of most herbs are available online. I recommend Starwest Botanicals and Penn Herbs for quality products at reasonable prices. Also, if you can get your hands on a good electric spice grinder, you can make your own powder from dried herb products. If you don't have premade powdered herbs, grind each ingredient separately to produce fine powder. Sieve the material through the mesh strainer into the collection dish; this removes the larger unground pieces and gives you cleaner powdered herb. (Pro-Tip: Putting a funnel under the mesh strainer reduces lost material and makes collection much easier.)
Combine the component powders in the collection dish, mix well, and bottle immediately. Label with the name, date, and ingredients for future reference.
This powder performs one of the functions of Banishing Powder, but with special attention to warding off pesky ghosts. After visiting historical or haunted locations, or any time you feel spooked while walking home, sprinkle a palmful of powder on the ground and scrape your feet on it (as if you were wiping off dirt) to keep anything ghostly from following you home. Take three steps backward and spit toward the powder, then continue on your way.
For extra protection, toss a pinch of Banishing Powder, Threshold Powder, or Black Salt over your doorstep when you get home.
Note: For safety's sake, make sure you never cast this powder into the wind and wash your hands after use. Leftover particles on your skin can cause pain and irritation if they come into contact with your eyes or breathing passages.

I'm bored so here's a recipe for beef cream stew I made.
Ingredients
150g Beef, cut into small bite-sized chunks about as thick as your thumb
1 Yellow Onion, cut into 12ths (that means cut into quarters, then for each 1/4ths, cut into thirds)
1 Carrot, cut into bite-sized chunks
1-2 Potatoes (depends on the person but I like using soft starchy potatoes), cut to similar volume to the carrot
Broccoli (optional, same volume)
Full cream (milk if unavailable)
Emmental cheese (or any white, springy and melty cheese you have), cut into small pea-sized chunks.
Water and oil
Spices
Coriander seeds
Rosemary, dried
Thyme, dried
Salt
White pepper (preferably powdered)
Bay leaf
Black pepper (optional)
Steps
Grab your coriander seeds, rosemary, thyme and salt, and grind them up to a coarse mix (either by a grinder or a mortar and pestle). You can also grind the white pepper if it's not a powder, otherwise just add it in later.
Rub your cut beef with the spice mix. Make sure your beef is patted dry before doing this.
Preheat your pot, add your oil and put your beef in it. Cook until it develops a crust and the pot forms a fond.
Remove the beef, add onions in the same pot and cook until soft and only a slight change in color.
Add potatoes and carrots, mix, then add the beef at top. Finally, add water and let it simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to avoid burning. You can add your bay leaf here.
Check if ingredients are now soft. Make sure the pot has sufficient water during the whole thing.
After 30 minutes, turn the heat to low and temporarily remove the pot from the stove to stop the simmering. Once stopped, put it back on. Add cream (or milk, if that's what you have) and optionally broccoli. Also add your freshly ground black pepper (optional). Constantly stir the pot to avoid curdling.
After 2-3 minutes, add the cheese. Continue to cook and stir until the cheese fully melts and incorporates into the stew. Season to taste.
Done. That's it. I've never made cream stew before so I looked up online and made one. The original recipe was a bit different, so consider this my interpretation. It's good and you can store it in the fridge and reheat with a microwave and it's still good. This is worth about 3-4 portions, depending on the person. I made mine in the weekends and I like it.

[ID: A plate of whole and ground spices including red chilis, Ceylon cinnamon, coriander seeds, and star anise. End ID]
新加坡咖哩粉 / Xinjiapo gali fen / Curry powder Singapura (Singapore curry powder)
Singapore curry powder, or gali fen ("gali" from the English "curry"), is a spice blend that was inspired by British Madras curry powder, but grew to incorporate Chinese spices and aromatics. It is representative of the culinary culture of Singapore, which incorporates influence from Chinese, Indian, Thai, Malay, and Indonesian cuisines.
This blend is used in “Singapore” curry fried noodles (actually a Hong Kongese dish) and in other Chinese curry dishes including chicken curry (新加坡式咖喱鸡), beef brisket curry (咖喱牛腩饭), curry soup noodles, and vegetable curries. It is also a popular choice for marinating meat and seafood.
Curry powder Singapura starts from a base of dried red chilis, and is rounded out with earthy spices including turmeric, coriander, cumin, and fenugreek. Warming spices such as nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, and cloves are often also included. Chinese influence sometimes appears in the form of chenpi (dried mandarin orange peel), Sichuan peppercorn, dried radish, liquorice root, star anise, and dried ginger.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Tip jar
Makes about 1/3 cup.
Ingredients:
2 Tbsp (17.4g) ground turmeric / 薑黃
10 dry red chilis (11g; adjust to taste)
2 Tbsp (8g) coriander seeds / 芫茜
1 tsp (3.6g) fenugreek seeds (optional)
1 tsp (2.5g) cumin seeds / 小茴香種子
1 tsp (2g) fennel seeds / 谷茴
1 tsp (2g) ground ginger (optional)
1/2 tsp (1.6g) black peppercorns
1 inch (1.5g) Ceylon cinnamon / 桂皮
1 pod (1.4g) star anise / 八角
1g liquorice root / gan cao / 甘草 (optional)
1g chenpi / 陳皮(optional)
1g cao guo / tsao ko / 草果 / Chinese black cardamom, freshly grated (optional)
4 (1g) green cardamom pods
1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg / 玉果 (1/4 tsp preground; .5g)
1/4 tsp (7; .4g) cloves
2 blades mace (.2g; optional)
Liquorice root, chenpi, and cao guo may be found at an east Asian or Chinese grocery store, but may need to be purchased online. Many homemade versions of this spice blend do not include these spices.
Hong Kong curries tend to be relatively mild and sweet, including a lot of turmeric and cinnamon relative to the amount of chili and pungent spices. You should adjust the heat, sweetness, and pungency of the blend to your taste.
Instructions:
1. For a less spicy curry powder, you may choose to break open the chilis and remove all or some of their seeds.
2. Roughly crush star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom pods in a mortar and pestle or with the flat of a knife. In a small, dry skillet, toast whole spices (coriander, fenugreek, cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, fennel, star anise, nutmeg, cardamom, Sichuan peppercorn, cloves, and mace) one at a time until each is fragrant. Set aside and allow to cool.
Spices are toasted one at a time so that smaller spices don't burn before larger ones are fully fragrant. Sometimes, I'll toast larger spices (such as cloves and cardamom pods) together, and then toast smaller seeds (such as cumin) together, to speed up the process.
3. Remove pan from heat. Toast ground spices (turmeric, and anything else you used a ground version of) for 30 seconds, stirring constantly, and remove from the skillet.
4. Grind liquorice root in a spice mill or coffee grinder until as fine as possible, then pass it through a sieve to remove larger pieces. Return those pieces to the mill and grind again. This is done separately because liquorice root can be tough to grind!
5. Grind all spices in a spice mill until fine. Pass through a sieve. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

(maybe I can use pepper grinder and some Russian website said I can use meat grinder, but I don't fully trust the 2nd method...)
Won't return the coffee, because I got way more than I ordered, so it isn't worth it 🤣

Homemade Bologna
From The Country Cousin in An Academy Award Review of Walt Disney Cartoons
Tumblr media
History
I'm going to say that those pink round disks on the table are sausage, like say bologna sausage.
Food
Doing research online I found a number of homemade bologna recipes. Though none were historical, actual bologna that you make at home, hasn't changed that much in the past 90 years. So here's my take on the recipe.
Tumblr media
Ingredients
2 pounds of ground beef (80% lean/20% fat or more)
Beef casing
7 1/2 tsp. Light Brown Sugar
2 tsp. black pepper, finely ground
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. mustard seed, ground
1 tsp. celery seed, ground
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp. coriander
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 cup chilled water
1/2 warm water
1 cup finely powdered skim milk
1 tea spoon liquid smoke (optional)
Cookware
Food processor
Steamer or Smoker
Mixing bowl
Directions
Soak Casing in warm water for 30 to 60 mins.
Mix salt and sugar with 1/2 cup warm water and stir mixture into meat.
Let cured meat sit in the fridge for at least one hour.
Afterwards place the meat and the rest of the ingredients into a food processor or meat grinder and grind till you achieve a pate texture.
Take the meat mixture and stuff into the casing and tie it off.
Refrigerate sausage overnight
If you have a smoker, smoke the bologna at 150° F for 3 to 6 hours, and then raise the temperature to 180 degrees and finish cooking for one hour.
If you do not have a smoker, you can steam the sausage for 3 to 6 hours at 160° F and just add liquid smoke to the meat mixture before stuffing.
Tumblr media
The final meat for this meal will be salmon. So stay tuned.

Devolver, one of the most renowned indie game publishers in the world, reached out to me and played my game.
In this devlog, I'll talk about:
How I connected with Devolver.
The details of our conversation.
The valuable feedback they provided and how it led to game improvements.
What's next for my game.
DISCLAIMER: I do have the approval from Devolver to share this.
How Did I Get in Touch with Devolver?
I've been talking with various publishers for months now. Typically, they discover my game through my presence on Twitter, Reddit, or directly on Steam during online events and contact me directly by mail. Noticing this growing interest, I decided to take the initiative and contact my favorite publishers myself, just to see what might happen.
But to do this, I needed a Pitch Deck. This document is a concise presentation of your game and your plans for it, including details like release dates, budget, target audience, and more. Fortunately, Devolver shares a tutorial on creating an effective pitch deck right on their contact page. I read it and essentially followed the guidelines to craft my own.
I sent out the pitch deck and then... I waited. I didn't have particularly high expectations; it felt a bit like tossing a message in a bottle into the sea.
Three weeks later, I received my first rejection from ChuckleFish. At that point, I somewhat resigned myself to not hearing back from anyone and moved on. But just a week later, Devolver got in touch! Specifically, it was Clara from their marketing team who've read my pitch deck and already noticed the game before during the Steam Next Fest.
Tumblr media
How Did the Conversation Go?
Clara told me that my initial release date was too soon for them. She actually contacted me to establish connections for future projects, as she had developed a genuine fondness for Lueur. I wasn't particularly fixed on the release date, so we discussed the possibility of launching the game in 2025. During our conversation, Clara presented me with a series of questions:
If you were to create your dream game, what would the budget be, and what features would you want to include in the final game?
Are you considering simultaneous releases on consoles and/or mobile devices?
What kind of outsourcing, contracting, or additional staffing would you require?
Which game engine are you currently using?
How long do you anticipate the average player will spend in Lueur to reach completion?
The question about the game engine had an interesting twist. I mentioned that I use Godot, highlighting the complete control I have over the engine without depending on another company. Remarkably, one week later, Unity altered its pricing structure, causing quite a stir in the game development community.
Answering these questions in detail took time, you can find my complete responses here.
I also took the opportunity to ask a few questions to Clara, which lead to very interesting information about how Devolver works.
How do you see my game fitting into your portfolio?
We’re continually exploring new ideas, regardless of genre, but first it has to be fun. The reason we take our time to review pitches so rigorously is to really understand the game and determine if our strengths are the best fit to help you sell it. So I’ll get back to you on that! We also have to evaluate the logistics, such as staff and resource availability in your proposed timelines, so you get maximum support from us, which means sometimes it's not just about the fit.
Have you already collaborated with solo developers before? How did it go?
We absolutely love working with small teams, and indeed have launched several projects with solo developers. Some examples are Inscryption, My Friend Pedro, and Bleak Sword and Pepper Grinder is another one upcoming.
What kind of support can I expect throughout the development and publishing process?
We essentially aim to do everything needed to support our devs being able to comfortably make their game, which typically includes funding, marketing, and production assistance at a minimum. We have load s of capabilities and expertise in many fields that we’re excited to leverage in whatever combination makes the most sense for your game. It’s a collaborative effort!
How does your team approach generating visibility and excitement around new releases?
We really try to play to each game’s individual strengths and listen to both our devs and our audience when it comes to marketing the games we publish. We’re fairly strategic and have some stellar in-house talent, as well as a host of partners for expanded capabilities. This will be a much bigger conversation throughout any partnership.
How involved would your team be in the development process? I value creative freedom and would like to know how we can work together to maintain the integrity of my game.
You’re the game-making genius. Our job is to help you get it out the door and into as many players’ hands as possible when it’s ready. We do have insight, experience, and passion, however, so feedback is always on the table if you want it.
Could you give me a sense of how collaboration between your team and me as a solo developer would work?
We endeavor to collaborate on every beat and give you final say, particularly on the big decisions. It’s no different than with a team.* We want you to have confidence in our partnership.
Her responses left a very positive impression. Did any of her answers strongly resonate with you? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, I'm really interested in knowing what you think about them.
Following our initial conversation, I sent Devolver a new version of the game for their team to review, and the waiting game began. Two weeks later, I received their feedback about my game.
Feedback about the Game
Let's dive into their feedback and see how I improved my game thanks to them. You might want to check out the video to visually understand the changes in the game.
The Day-skipping for resources felt tedious.
This is true. Initially, Lueur was designed to be played in real-time. However, casual and more relaxed players found the timer stressful. So, I introduced a new game mode, which is entirely turn-based. This mode has been well-received, but it did not feel natural that time is stopped and you have to manually skip days. To resolve this, I decided to take a different approach. Now the game is always in real-time, but you can pause and fast-forward time instead of skipping days. Mechanically, it remains the same, but the player's experience is vastly smoother and even more immersive. Players now have full control over how time passes instead of the game enforcing constant pause.
Tumblr media
The visual style didn’t grab.
I plan to retain the low-rez pixel art style due to my limited drawing skills. Nevertheless, it doesn't mean I can't make it look better. Some of my sprites are clearly placeholders and will need to be updated. I've already overhauled the sprites for the darkness storms, which play a crucial role in the game's atmosphere. The result is quite ominous and I like it. Moreover, I've introduced a weather system, which does not impact gameplay yet, but greatly changes the game's mood and breaks the visual monotony.
Tumblr media
The mini-games were fun, and there was hope for more.
I'm really happy about this feedback, because the mini-games are definitely a risky design choice in a strategy game, and a few testers really hated it hard. But overall, it s very appreciated. My plan is to progressively introduce more and more mini-games with each level.
Tumblr media
The moral choices were surprising and cool.
I'll be expanding on the events and their choices with each level. I'm currently working on implementing a priority system to add an element of randomness and ensure that players don't encounter the same events too frequently.
Tumblr media
What's Next?
So, did Devolver eventually decide to work with me on Lueur? Unfortunately, the answer is no.
We’ve taken a deeper dive into the build and your dream game notes over these past couple weeks and there was more back and forth than usual. In the end, we couldn’t quite come to a consensus to move forward to next steps at this time. However, Lueur resonated with quite a few of us (particularly the tabletop gamers), which is a much better sign than most projects that make it to this step.
So... It's disappointing that things didn't work out, and I would have been thrilled to collaborate with them. However, I'm immensely grateful for the opportunity, and I take pride in the fact that my small solo project captured the attention of such a renown publisher. Their feedback has been invaluable in enhancing my game, and perhaps, who knows, they might have a change of heart in the future.
As for right now, I actually just signed a publisher last week! But that's for another devlog. Feel free to watch the video version. If you'd like to embark with my on this indie journey, don't forget to subscribe!

I hope it was a nice read, see you next time everyone!

[ID: A close-up on the bottom right of a bowl filled with a red, brown, and yellow spice blend. The rest of the frame is taken up by scattered brown chili flakes, ajwain, and fenugreek seeds. End ID.]
Berbere / በርበረ (Ethiopian spice blend)
Berbere is a spice blend commonly used to flavor meat and vegetable dishes in the horn of Africa; mostly made up of Ethiopian brown chili peppers, it also commonly includes garlic and shallot, false cardamom, carom and nigella seeds, high-roasted fenugreek, cinnamon, and other spices and herbs. This recipe for an Ethiopian-style berbere produces a blend that imparts a smooth, even heat and a slight camphorous aroma to your final dish.
Premade berbere blends, even those from speciality spice stores, cut corners and cut costs—even if the spices are fresh and have always been stored sealed, the blend is unlikely to contain Ethiopian brown chilis, korerima, or besobela. This recipe provides a good baseline for a typical Ethiopian berbere if you're able to get your hands on these spices, rather than relying on undisclosed substitutions—but it does provide substitutions for anything you're unlikely to find in a local halaal grocery store in the U.S. or Europe. To avoid confusion with overlapping English translations (and because many recipes contain errors caused by them), Amharic terms, botanical (Latin) names, and false cognates to beware of are provided whenever necessary.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Tip jar
Ingredients:
1/4 cup dried ground Ethiopian brown chili (berbere), or substitute New Mexico chilis
1 Tbsp sweet paprika (optional)
2 tsp garlic powder (nech shinkurt / ነጭ ሽንኩርት)
2 tsp dehydrated shallot or red onion (key shinkurt / ቀይ ሽንኩርት)
2 tsp false cardamom (korerima / ኮረሪማ; Aframomum melegueta)
1 tsp coriander seeds (dimbilal / ድንብላል)
1 tsp black mustard seeds (senafitch / ሰናፍጭ; Brassica nigra) (optional)
1/2 tsp fenugreek (abish or hulbet / አብሽ; Trigonella foenum-graecum), dark-roasted
1/2 tsp nutmeg (gewz; Myristica fragrans)
1/4 tsp ground ginger (zinjibel / ዝንጅብል; Zingiber officinale)
1/4 tsp carom seeds (nech azmud / ነጭ አዝሙድ; Trachyspermum ammi)
1/4 tsp nigella seeds (tikur azmud / ጥቁር አዝሙድ; Nigella sativa)
1/8 tsp true (Ceylon) cinnamon (k'elefa / ቀረፋ; Cinnamomum verum), or substitute cassia cinnamon
4 pieces Ethiopian long pepper (timiz; Piper capense); or Indian long pepper (Piper longum), also sometimes used under the name "timiz"
5 whole cloves (krenfud / ቅርንፉድ)
1 tsp Ethiopian holy basil (besobela / በሶቢላ)
1 tsp rue seeds (tena Adam / ጤናዳም; Ruta chalepenesis)
1 tsp Ethiopian rape seeds / Ethiopian mustard seeds (Brassica carinata), or substitute niger seeds (Guizotia abyssinica)
1 tsp koseret (ኮሰረት; Lippia abyssinica) (optional)
2 tsp salt
Berbere preparations vary from household to household, and spices may be added, removed, or rebalanced according to your preference. Less common inclusions are marked as optional; the spices and herbs that are the most vital are bolded.
See end notes for information on spices and substitions.
Instructions:
1. Heat a dry skillet over medium. Roast fenugreek, agitating occasionally, until it has considerably darkened to a medium brown. Set aside. Toast cinnamon, cloves, and korerima for a few minutes until fragrant and set aside.
2. Toast smaller whole spices (carom and nigella seeds) for a few minutes until fragrant and set aside.
3. Remove the pan from heat. Toast ground spices (ginger, paprika) for 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until fragrant.
4. Use a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder to grind all ingredients to a fine consistency. Pass through a fine mesh strainer and store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Notes on spices and herbs
Ethiopian brown chili pepper / berbere
Tumblr media
Known as "berbere" in Ethiopia, Ethiopian brown chilis have a rich, smoky, and tangy heat. Dried Ethiopian brown chilis or chili flakes may be purchased online, or you may substitute another type of chili (my choice would be New Mexico).
Paprika
Different varieties of paprika are all made of dried, toasted, and ground red bell peppers, but they vary in heat and in smokiness. For berbere you will need sweet paprika (not smoked paprika, hot paprika, or smoked hot paprika). The proportion of berbere to paprika can be varied a bit according to your preference to produce a milder or hotter blend, but beware of recipes calling for large amounts of paprika—berbere should be mostly chilis!
Dehydrated shallot
Shallots have a flavor similar to those of garlic and onion, but subtler and milder. Dehydrated shallot may be purchased at speciality spice stores, or online—or you can dehydrate thinly sliced shallots in a dehydrator or in an oven on low. Red onion powder is a possible substitute, as red onions are commonly used in place of shallots by people of Ethiopian descent in the United States.
Korerima / false cardamom

Korerima is also known as "grains of paradise," "black cardamom," or "false cardamom." Some recipes mistakenly call for Nepal cardamom in place of korerima, because Nepal cardamom is also known as "black cardamom" in English. The aroma of korerima once ground, though, is much more akin to that of green cardamom than to the smoky, camphorous aroma of Nepal cardamom.
Fenugreek / abish
Tumblr media
Fenugreek seeds may be found in any halaal grocery store, where they may be called fenugreek or methi.
Carom seeds / nech azmud
Tumblr media
Carom seeds may be found in any halaal grocery store, where they will be known as ajwain. You may also see these referred to as "white cumin" or "caraway seeds" in English, but don't confuse them with true caraway seeds (Carum carvi), which are larger.
Nigella seeds / tikur azmud
Tumblr media
Because "tikur azmud" literally translates to "black cumin" in English, some recipes make the mistake of calling for kala jeera (Indian black cumin)—however, the seeds are from different plants entirely. "Tikur azmud" refers to the seeds of the Nigella sativa plant, which are known as nigella seeds in English cooking and kalonji in Indian cooking.
Ceylon cinnamon
Tumblr media
Ceylon or true cinnamon is a variety of cinnamon commonly grown in Ceylon, Sri Lanka; it has a subtler, more nuanced and less bitter flavor than cassia cinnamon. Because it must be rolled by hand (unlike cassia cinnamon, which curls naturally), it tends to be more expensive than cassia. If you can't locate any Ceylon cinnamon, though, cassia is a good substitution.
Holy basil / besobela
Tumblr media
Ethiopian holy basil is a subspecies of basil whose flowers have a distinctive fruity or tea-like aroma. Some recipes call for basil in place of besobela, but to my nose the aromas are nothing alike; I would favor camomile as a substitution, or omit the herb altogether.
Rue seeds / tena adam
Tumblr media
"Tena Adam" (lit., "health of Adam) or "rue" is an aromatic plant the dried fruits of which are used in spice blends including berbere (the leaves are often used to flavor coffee). Ethiopian rue may be purchased online, or you may substitute for it a pinch of lemon or orange zest.
Long pepper / timiz
The berries of Piper capense, also known as African long pepper or Ethiopian long pepper. Piper capense grows across west Africa, south Africa, and the horn of Africa. Timiz is smoky, camphorous, and resinous, not as spicy or sharp as black or white pepper. Piper longum (Indian long pepper) berries, which are sharper in taste, are best known for their cultivation in Southeast Asia, but they are also grown and eaten in East Africa and may also be referred to as "timiz." In the U.S. and Europe, Ethiopian long pepper may be found online, or at a speciality African foods store, where it will be labelled "timiz"; Indian long pepper may be found at an Indian or halaal grocery store, where it will be labelled "pippali."
Salt
Traditional berbere blends typically contain salt. I tend to omit it, as it allows for more control over the salt content of a dish later on.
