Poecilotheria metallica

- Gooty Sapphire Ornamental Tarantula.

Locale: India, Andhra Pradesh Forest.

Enclosure This species is particularly sensitive to light; provide plenty of coverage and keep them out of direct sunlight.

Provide a vertical enclosure which is at least twice the length and width of the tarantula. For slings, provide substrate to burrow down into so they can hide. For larger metallica, provide a large cork bark and plenty of coverage for hiding.

Water I like to keep my Pokies on the moist side, as these are Asian species, they experience more humid climates.

I always provide a water bowl, although i have never seen my metallica drinking from one.

Feed For slings, provide nothing bigger than the carapace. For juveniles and above you can feed prey items that are slightly bigger than the carapace. My experience is that they are very shy eaters, I have never seen my eat but prey outside of pre molt has been eaten.

Do not leave live prey in with animals you suspect are in pre molt or past 24 hours for other tarantulas.

Temperament This species is very light and sound senstive, they will come out during the night however they will disappear quickly if they sense you around.

If you provide your metallica with a full and safe space to hide in, it will often wander calmly around its enclosure.

As this species has medically significant venom, please do not handle it and take care when rehousing.

Molting habits Generally P. metallica will make a molt hammock and will molt on it. In rare cases they will molt on the ground. If your Poecilotheria falls out of it’s molt hammock, unless it is in immediate danger, do not disturb it.

This is a crocheted replica of a Poecilotheria Metallica made for @marks_tarantulas. The Poecilotheria Metallica tarantula is one of the most beautiful and stunning tarantulas in the world and it's also one of the most venomous so you don't want to get bitten by one of them. They share the same very unique patterns with the other variations of the Poecilotheria specie together with their strong venom. This replica has been crocheted with royal blue yarn, which is the color that comes closest to the color of the real tarantula, and then I have painted the details on it with acrylic paint. It's all handmade and of course it can't be as detailed as the patterns on the real tarantula. It is the only blue species of the genus Poecilotheria. Like others in its genus it exhibits an intricate fractal-like pattern on the abdomen.
