IF STATE MOST RED WHY REPUBLICAN NO WIN??
Vaush explains how population density/distribution relates to voting trends, gerrymandering, "tyranny of the majority" lies, and how conservatives are desperately trying to retain control over their electorates.
Lots of cool data visualization was shown, some of which you can see here:

The Great Australian House Rush: How We're Turning Medium-Sized Cities into the New Sydney Minus the Traffic Jams
Australia, a land vast and diverse, with cities bustling and bursting at their seams. Here we are, at a crossroads, much like that dreaded five-way intersection in Sydney where you’re more likely to meet your maker than make it to work on time. But fear not, for our beloved minister of Everything Important That We Usually Take for Granted (aka Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and…

man i think the amon plotline is just kind of weak in terms of world building
#lok#i've seen posts discussing this with more nuance#but it's still so soon after the hundred year war#republic city is new too. only a generation old. majority of its population are either 1st or 2nd generation immigrants#or earth kingdom citizens or fire nation colonists who built what became the city during the war#and the way that bending is distributed among the population of every nation is entire random. it's an odd choice to mark it as a dividing#a dividing line. because every bender has family that are nonbenders and vice versa#and! add to that that unless you are trained just being born a bender isn't an intrinsic leverage over a nonbender. untrained benders#and benders without a lot of power exist. able to do party tricks and not much more#it likens to. people who's bodies are more naturally built to handle manual labour. it's just genetics and random luck#of course there could be interesting ways to tackle bender and nonbender dynamics especially with the religious significance of bending#and in mixed cultures how bending being passed on can be a surrfire way you are truly seen as carrying on that side of your culture#and it could be interesting seeing the culture shift as republic city is the first place to have such a wide mix of different cultures#in things like food and festivals#but a nonbender revolution (especially led by a bender like amon) is odd. like what is the goal of the revolution#bending and nonbending people can't be seperated in any meaningful way. and there are already laws and rules#prohibiting destructive bending use just as there are regular destruction#it's just. the revolution seeks to remove bending from the world. that's obviously a wild thing to say with cultures built around and with#bending as a part of them. add that to the fact that benders can be born from non-bending families and it just falls apart.

I always hear about how incarcerated people will like, bend over backwards to play games like D&D when they don't have access to things like hardcover books, books with maps, dice, etc. and now I'm wondering if there'd be a way to like... Make some of the diceless TTRPGs I've seen around available to them since it's clear that's a situation where a role playing game with others is a huge source of escapism and relief

I forget why, but I was on the Wikipedia page for polycystic ovarian syndrome, and I started researching hirsutism in women, and I learned the following things in this order:
there's a diagnostic criteria used to evaluate how hairy a woman is
This is important because being too hairy is a diagnostic criteria of most disorders that cause hyperandrogenism
Disorders that cause hyperandrogenism can be diagnosed by...measuring how hairy you are (this is the main and most important diagnostic criterion for PCOS)
Disorders that cause hyperandrogenism are important because they are correlated with obesity, infertility, and...being too hairy?
I think to myself, wait, what is a normal range for testosterone in women? I find this article...which set reference ranges for "normal" testosterone levels in women...EXCLUDING WOMEN WITH PCOS?
Quote: "Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is another notable condition in genetic (XX) females, which is characterized by excessive ovarian production of androgens. This condition is included for comparison with DSD, as the affected females with PCOS are genetic and phenotypic females. The elevated levels of testosterone in these females can lead to hyperandrogenism, a clinical disorder characterized variably by hirsutism, acne, male-pattern balding, metabolic disturbances, impaired ovulation and infertility. PCOS is a common condition, affecting 7%-10% of premenopausal women."
So: the study claims to demonstrate a clear distinction between the normal range of hormone levels in "Healthy" men and "healthy" women...with "healthy" being defined in the study as...having hormones within the "normal" range.......................
So I researched what the clinically established "normal" range for testosterone in women is
THERE ISN'T ONE????
Quote from the above article: "Several different approaches have been used to define endocrine disorders. The statistical approach establishes the lower and the upper limits of hormone concentrations solely on the basis of the statistical distribution of hormone levels in a healthy reference population. As an illustration, hypo- and hypercalcemia have been defined on the basis of the statistical distribution of serum calcium concentrations. Using this approach, androgen deficiency could be defined as the occurrence of serum testosterone levels that are below the 97.5th percentile of testosterone levels in healthy population of young men. A second approach is to use a threshold hormone concentration below or above which there is high risk of developing adverse health outcomes. This approach has been used to define osteoporosis and hypercholesterolemia. However, we do not know with certainty the thresholds of testosterone levels which are associated with adverse health outcomes."
What the fuck?
What the fuck?
It's batshit crazy to make a diagnostic criteria for medical disorders by placing arbitrary cutoffs within 2-5% of either end of a statistical distribution. What the actual fuck?
"The results came back, you have Statistical Outlier Disease." "What treatments are available?" "Well, first, we recommend dietary change. You should probably stop eating so many spiders."
Another article which attempted to do this
Quote: "Subjects with signs of hirsutism or with a personal history of diabetes or hypertension, or a family history of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) were excluded."
"We're going to figure out the typical range of testosterone levels that occur in women! First, we're going to exclude all the women that are too hairy from the study. I am very good at science."
Anyway I got off topic but there are apparently race-specific diagnostic tools for "hirsutism." That's kinda weird on its own but when I looked more into this in relation to race I found this article that straight-up uses the term "mongoloid"

The Tyranny of Merit: What's become of the Common good? Rethinking how a society honors the contributions of work
In the end of the book, M Sandel pointed out that human beings are not just consumers but producers. People's sense of honour and dignity don't just come from the facts that they consume or how much they can earn (which is to some extent beyond how the individual controls how the labour market prices their skills, experience, and knowledge) but the contributions they generate to the society through their works.
The problems of a blind believe on earning capabilities are that when the market obsolete and displacement workers, it doesn't just take away the person's earning capabilities. It robs out the esteem of the person by denying their sense of contributions to the society. The major parties in the West and their politically ideologies falsely and superficially assume that by giving 'level playing fields' to access higher education will automatically solve the issues of inequality and poverty.
The VALUE of a job doesn't relate to the amount a person earns. The society EQUALLY needs ALL sorts of people to perform all kinds of works. In terms of contributions to the society, a blue collar labourer is NO LESS contributive than a highly qualified professional. i.e. we need as much as the doctors and the janitors.
If a society only judges a person's value by how much the individual earns, criminals and people earn a lot from unethical and illegal ways and still feel esteemed because they can consume a lot from the money they earn despite they have no contribution to the society or even harmful to the society.
So far the policies attempts taken by centre left and centre right governments to provide 'level entry fields' to higher education are not effective because many prestigeous universities in USA have significantly reduced fair consideration of every applicant as they put more emphaisis on alumni, other types of connections and the ability of the students or their families to pay the high tuition fees. Well connected students from wealthy families are MUCH easier to be accepted by prestigeous unis than a 'nobody knows' person.
Over emphasis on credentials is discriminative and demoralising because ONLY highly qualified or educated people are seen as worthy to be respected and honoured by the society. This is why many Western societies find it difficult to recruit people to do ESSENTIAL frontline and labour intensive works because people feel they can't earn sufficient and even they work hard they are not recognised. Indeed, they are the most vulnerable group to be displaced. Politicians jump to fill the gaps by sourcing 'cheap' labours from poor countries to fill the sweat jobs and yet it still creates huge sense of resentment from those being forsaken, forgotten, abandoned and left out in the process. It explains why the severe political black slash against mainstream elitism often has the side effects of targeting immigrants for 'taking away' local jobs. The reality is immigrants are more vulnerrable to be exploited for taking the 'nobody wants' jobs while the lower educated blue collar workers (typically older white men) feel that their livelihood is screwed up.
It is the sense of obsoletion that erodes the identity of the workers as productive people. It is the accumulated DENIAL AND REJECTION they receive from the society that creates deep political and social resentment and disenfranchising against the mainstream politics. Unfortunately, the big political parties and their governments have ignored the underlying fundamentals. The policies they make are unable to address the root causes.
To rethink the value of work needs to begin with recognising contributive justice for the left behind people. i.e. to recognise that the need to be needed by those with whom we share a common life. What voters want even more is a contributive justice-an opportunity to win the social recognition and esteem that go with producing what others need and value regardless of how 'lowly' their works are and how 'little' they earn or how they lack of higher credential qualifications. Put in simply, work is honoured and dignified NOT because a person earns more than another nor the work is more superiorly priced by the labour market but on the base that the work itself is recognised and honoured by the society. i.e. even a janitor or a roadside labourer, the value of contributions to the society is NOT to be diminised or discriminated.
Only a political agenda that acknowledges this need and seeks to revive the dignity of works can speak effectively to the discontent that roils our politics because anger abroad in our societies is, at least in part, a crisis of recognition.
Common good can be arrived at only by deliberating with our fellow citizens about the purposes and ends worthy of our political community. In this context, democracy cannot be indifferent to the character of the common life.
It requires that citizens from different walks of life encounter one another in common spaces and public spaces where we learn to negotiate and abide our differences and start to care for the common good instead of letting the meritocratic sorting machines to separate, divide and disconnect people that resulted in a deeply torn apart society where the rich and those who don't live in parallel universes of separate ways of lives. The consequence is that it has created and fed in a poisonous political partisanshhip within the political system. In such environment, it is how people have lost the ability to reason together about large public questions, or even listen to each other.
