2021: A QUEER ODYSSEY

The sad irony of writing a list of achievements alone and exhausted in my room, among piles of unwashed clothes, heartache and trash, is not lost on me. But neither is the necessity of counting one's blessings during the darkest time of the year.

For two years in a row the LGBT Union has given out the queer hero award. This year I am honoured to receive it in the culture category; humbled that at least a part of the community recognised me and what I do. It might not seem like work for most people at all, and in a way it isn't. It's a way of living your truth in the best way you know how.

This list doesn’t by all means aspire to be conclusive nor does it reflect everything I experienced or learned or all the mistakes I made.

For Lesbian Divorce

The Estonian government wanted to hold a referendum on legalising same sex marriage. In January I wrote a letter to the parliament emphasising how that wouldn't be very helpful. The referendum was a symptom of something else: a tug of war between people in power, and a crisis of trust between the government and its people.

When the government fell about a week later, people cheered hoping things would change for the better. A petition with 35 805 signatures in support of same sex marriage was submitted to the parliament where it was basically laughed off.

This experience definitely helped me see how the institution of marriage should be abolished altogether, homonormative ideas of family questioned, and more queer efforts focused on the economy, environment and education instead.

Nice job, conservatives.

The Hustle

Some time in Spring, Stina Leek and Sirla from ÄSS approached me for a collaboration. They helped me create the first Helgi Saldo T-shirt designs that were later picked for the 2021 Tallinn T-Shirt Art Biennale. Alongside the T-shirts, we created a line of custom "Mine viltu" pieces with the help of Sveta Vintage that were auctioned to finance a LGBTQIA+ documentary project.

The idea for the documentary was born with freelance writer Anna Lillioja. We began the on-going project in August with photographer Silver Mikiver, taking little road trips to conduct interviews with different Estonian queers of all ages and backgrounds. We are still looking for funding, so If you wish to support or participate in the project in any capacity, please let us know!

On Pride month I launched my #prideordie collection of T-shirts with Caps Lock to create Estonian-language protest wear and find an alternative income. The shirts and hoodies are available until we run out of stock.

Cringe But Free

Anette Mäletjärv, the non-binary founder and admin of the cishet-cringe meme account Heterokringel asked me if I wanted to host a show together on IDA Raadio. I agreed and we started the late night morning talk show "Homokringel", a shamelessly queer equivalent of manspreading.

This year, we recorded 8 hours worth of episodes with ten guests in total, on topics ranging from queer representation to plastic surgery to ADHD and forgetting people's pronouns. The show's intro was created by Elina Masing aka Valge Tüdruk whose song "Transparency" I got to review in March.

In November we also made a special cross-over episode with Lilla Agenda and Triin Sepp, discussing sexuality related topics with a live audience in X-Baar.

On the Road

I travelled quite a bit. My friend basically dragged me to Barcelona in June and I couldn't be more grateful for the experience. The heatwave was rough, but I did so many wonderful unspeakable things in the course of those weeks, and the clubs weren't even open.

I missed out on the Vikervelo event in June, but got an invitation from artist and drag king Mētra Saberova aka Timmy to be in the jury for the Baltic Drag King Competition in Riga at Baltic Pride 2021. This was a wonderful experience all the way through.

I got to meet Mētra again in September when we went to Kaunas Pride in Lithuania with some of the best and brightest queers in the Baltics. It was the first live meet-up of the pan-Baltic network Black Rose. Black Carnation, and also the best pride experience I have ever had. Big thanks to Rebeka Põldsam and Edvinas Grinkevičius and the whole Kaunas Pride team!

Although it wasn't planned and I had to steal half of Vencheska Baltique's wardrobe, Kaunas Pride was the first time I got to perform internationally. We again shared the stage — and more — with Vencheska and Timmy when they visited Estonia a week or so later.

Producer of Sebum

The pandemic has had an obvious impact on queer culture, and my itch to create. In 2021, I got to write for others as well as perform my silly little solos.*

Rene and Carmel Köster's alternative musical “Veenus.me” premiered in February after several pandemic related delays. I wrote a monologue and a sketch, with one bit ending up in my favourite song from the show. Rene also premiered his solo performance MASC II MASC in early December for which I was a co-writer.

The summer was busy. Two of my dreams came true: I got to be one of the BÄM girls with Chloe LaGucchi and Kimberly Anderson (shoutout to Rebeka Rabota!), and I was a part of the first ever drag brunch in Estonia with Chloe, Vilita and Nordica. I got to eat a hot dog while dressed as a hot dog.

Probably my proudest moment was writing and hosting the award ceremony of the international short film and animation festival PÖFF Shorts. I have been trying to hone my skills by putting myself on the stage as often as possible, from hosting karaoke to giving interviews, and I think it's starting to pay off.

End of the Tunnel

As I'm writing this, I have a few parties lined up in what is known as the "Christmas tunnel" between the holidays and the New Year, more new exciting projects hatching and trips ahead.

Having stayed in Tallinn for more than I was expecting to, I can confidently say I have the nicest, smartest and most supporting people on my side, both friends and family. There is so much to do and so much to experience here. And yet—
