The reason a lot of punks don't associate themselves with punk is becose of all of those ,,punks" that see punk as just music and close and are mean and sadistic towards normies. First punk is a political movement before anything else second people who dress basic and listen to popular pop artist are just as human as everyone and we should be nice to them and everyone else and if you don't think that sorry but you are a poser.

im an absolute hater of anyone who calls themselves punk just as an excuse to be angry and cruel to people. like absolutely fuck you if you are like that. if you are punk you should be kind and care about people so much that you will fight for a better world. genuine kindness is more punk than any "rahhh im angry!!" bullshit. anger is ok. i am angry at the government and the systems that have been used to oppress so many people. but we should not be angry at the people who are stuck inside those systems.
and also i hate when people want others to be weirder but have boundaries on how weird they can be. if you only want to see thin, white, able bodied people with dyed hair and possibly minor mental illnesses then you do not actually accept people that are different from you. if you refuse to treat visibly disabled people, intellectually disabled people, nonverbal people, fat people, BIPOC, addicts, homeless people, jewish people, Muslims, etc. like humans then you are not punk. punk is not "i bought this battle vest on amazon. the addict by the gas station is soo scary even though he has never done anything to hurt me".
also i am not trying to prevent people from being punk. anyone can be punk. my grandma could be punk. it doesnt matter how you dress or look or if you listen to other genres of music. it is a movement heavily based on ideologies and political stances (and music ofc) and it's ok to make mistakes but not ok to be consistently hurtful.

I think it's so cool how social movements of the 50s and 60s sparked the punk movement. like. that shit is so cool
i have whole essays (I did a school project about this) but in short:
There was a rise in awareness of corruption and problems because there was such a boom in social movements. The Civil Rights movement, gay liberation movement, and Women's Rights movement (just to name a few) kind of showed general society how much was fucked up ! A clearer example of exposure to corruption creating anger is the Vietnam War- the anti-war movement started because the war was so televised and people could see how awful things were. That's pretty much what happened with these social movements creating awareness and anger.
The punk movement is sort of a continuation of these movements. It's a continuation of the rebellious other-ness, and the fight against authority. And the similarites can show us that- the Civil Rights movement, for example, was led by young people! All of these social movements were led by high school and college students. So it's like. young rebellion because older people are fucking up the future. And the punk movement is the same! It's widely populated by young people who want to see a change in the fucked-up world they're inheriting.
Another big overlap is the politics. Obviously, these social movements were widely left-wing. That's the whole point of them! to make poltical and social changes that align with the ideology of the left. and punk also pushes for left wing social change! that ideology is a huge part of the punk identity
These movements sparked a rage that couldn't be put out. And that rage carried into the punk movement- you can see that with the angry music and the angry patches and the rebellion. People are angry.
(sorry if this doesn't make a ton of sense ! I might reblog with my essays (that make much more sense) if i can find em)

as a punk im begging punks to be kind to newbies. answer the questions you think are silly, help them find music they love, suggest ways they can help their community, etc. punk should never ever be made into an exclusive club for only the "most special people ever!". i WANT more people to feel safe and welcomed in punk spaces, and yes, that includes online ones. irl punk spaces are usually much more chill but im not about to leave out all the people who cant access those due to disability, location, or age. no one is gonna feel safe joining punk spaces if they get ridiculed and laughed at simply for being curious.
i want people who are curious about the punk movement to feel comfortable asking questions. I want them to feel like there will be someone there to help them out or share resources with them. it really does make me upset when people expect they'll be treated with kindness and respect and they just get laughed at. there's absolutely no reason to laugh at someone for not knowing something or for wording something a bit poorly. if you dont plan on helping them you should just leave them alone.
