In the early 1930s, scholarly studies were done on the impact of screen stars on teenagers, because of fears that the movies were sexualizing them. These studies found that teenage girls learned sex techniques through watching Garbo’s sex scenes, especially those in Flesh and the Devil; they then practiced her techniques at home with their girlfriends. Raymond Daum described Garbo’s many young female fans as having “schoolgirl crushes on her” that “defined a national idolatry.” And knowledge of Garbo’s non-heteronormative sexuality was spread through lesbian networks “from coast to coast.” Moreover, the 1920s was an era of commercial expansion in which the ranks of saleswomen and typists, careers dominated by young women, increased. These women made enough money to see a movie more than once. They identified with female stars and liked to see them in powerful roles.

𝘙𝘢𝘺𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘦 ;
raymond and marquise are undoubtedly extremely dry in the area of nicknames. literally. he calls her marquise and she calls him raymond, or ray.
he helps her do her makeup! they both sit cross legged on the floor of marquise's bedroom, and he drags a lipstick across her lips and lines her eyes with the eyeliner.
everytime marquise wants to see him she drops everything and runs to his house. he lets her in (ofc how could he not she's adorable) and then all hell is raised in his house.
raymond tried to teach her sword fighting and she closed her eyes everytime he attacked 💀 he's so exasperated
they dance together a lot, with raymond pulling marquise into a new dance before she can say, 'okay, breaktime pretty boy-,'
casual affection. It's always kisses, soft hugs, heads on each other's shoulders. he tells her tales of the sky and they dance underneath the watchful expanse of the sky.
rainy days!! they both run in the rain, chasing each other, until they're nothing more than exhilarated, laughing messes. it's one of the few times she sees raymond come out of his shell
dancing in the sun by the sea, with no one but themselves for company, the sea a majesty in the background
hugs. enough said, hugs with that bury the other in their arms.
flowery meadows and summer afternoons. his laugh, low and rasping, dark hair in sunlight, stormy grey eyes admiring her silently
watching the sunrises and sunsets, hands interlinked, nothing but the sacred, sound power of silent, quiet love.

But we are glad to celebrate the life and work of this deep-voiced, deadpan legend with a wealth of wonderful tributes from across the dashboard—as Tumblr pays tribute to this biggest, warmest of hearts the only way it knows how.
