Reverse Tiger AI Art Quest Part 2
I didn't give up on my quest to make an AI image of a "reverse tiger", first detailed here:

On Jan. 8, 2023, I decided to try a different model called KKW-FANTAREAL V1.0. I was hoping that an emphasis on fantasy might help me break through the problems I've had with stripes. I was using DDIM as the sampler.
First, I tried text prompts (ex. "a photograph of a black tiger with orange stripes") with no luck:
Instead of recoloring a realistic image, I tried a crude sketch, hoping to make my intent clearer to the AI.
One of the results was a particularly cute cub, but still had the black stripe issue.
I painted over the black stripes to make a new image prompt. I got kind of close to my idea, but the result looked kind of dirty:
Straying too far from those settings, hoping for a more photorealistic image, brought those damned incessant black stripes right back!
I liked the cub but felt that I needed to simplify my input in order to clearly tell the AI which colors should blend and which should be stripes, so I airbrushed over one of them to make another image prompt.
It's interesting to see the crude sketch morph into something photorealistic, but at some point, the AI is like "Screw your orange stripes! I'll do what I want!"
I felt that the biggest problem was the keyword "tiger", so I tried adjusting my prompt to remove that.
That didn't work either:
I'm now using Automatic-1111 for a UI, but for some reason, I can't reproduce the same results.

My Quest to Generate a Reverse Tiger
I was hoping to have a finished product to show off, but my quest to use AI to generate a photorealistic "reverse tiger" (orange stripes on black, which is a color morph I've made while playing with character creators in RPGs) is ongoing, so I'll share as I go along.
I started with the Stable Diffusion 1.4 model.
My first attempt (Dec. 28, 2022) was to just use a text prompt like "photograph of a black tiger with orange stripes", but that didn't work out. The images sometimes came close, but weren't quite right:
I decided to start over by generating a normal tiger in a nice pose to use for img2img. I didn't intend to use two tigers, but this image was too good for me to pass up, so I decided that I'd reverse the colors on only one to create an interesting contrast:
I made a crude Photoshop edit to turn the base color black and the stripes orange and used that for img2img:
Sometimes I used in-painting to isolate the reverse tiger. The results were ok, but not quite photorealistic:
Some interesting failures:
While the black nose was an efficient way to convey the orange-black color swap concept, I realized that many of the results looked off because the faces violated my swap "rule". It wasn't initially obvious since the orange and black markings are of similar width, but I figured out a way to distinguish the base and stripe colors.
The normal tiger's orange base color blends into the white parts, while the black stripes lie on top:
This would prove to be a huge stumbling block.
I painted over the best result in Photoshop for another round of img2img:
The AI proved extremely stubborn about swapping colors so I couldn't give it too much strength but sticking too close to the image prompt created a fake-looking airbrush effect. Best result of 12/29/2022:
Prompt: a nature photograph of two (large cats), realistic fur texture, smooth whiskers, orange markings, orange stripes
Negative Prompt: blur, blurry, ugly, deformed, airbrushed, airbrush, painting, drawing, ((green)), (((black stripes))), ((black spots)), crooked whiskers, broken whiskers
Seed: 9091646
Width: 768
Height: 512
Steps: 70
Guidance Scale: 30.0
Prompt Strength: 0.3
Sampler: ddim
Since black stripes seem so inextricable to the keyword "tiger", I tried replacing it with things like "lion", "panther", and "large cat", but that didn't solve the problem. Enjoy some Cheeto-colored house cats:
I tried some more, but this was the best I could do so far:
Prompt: a (((nature photograph))) of two large cats, realistic fur texture, orange (((markings))), (((orange stripes))), ((black base fur color)), ((white cheeks)), Macro
Negative Prompt: ((((ugly)))), (((duplicate))), ((morbid)), ((mutilated)), out of frame, ((poorly drawn face)), (((mutation))), (((deformed))), ((ugly)), (((blurry))), ((bad anatomy)), (((bad proportions))), ((extra limbs)), cloned face, (((disfigured))), out of frame, ugly, extra limbs, (bad anatomy), gross proportions, dead, zombie, ((((airbrushed)))), (((airbrush))), (((painting))), (((drawing))), ((green)), (((black stripes))), ((black spots)), crooked whiskers, broken whiskers, scruffy, thick whiskers, (((dark stripes)))), (((blurry fur))), (((blurry coat))), saturated orange, (((smeared))), bent whiskers, (oversaturated), ((flat)), (((2D))), (((brown stripes))), (((illustration))), crooked eyes, extra eyelid, ((yellow stripe)), (((gaussian blur))), (((cartoon)))
Seed: 8711914
Width: 768
Height: 512
Steps: 70
Guidance Scale: 20.0
Prompt Strength: 0.35
Sampler: ddim

Excuse me i’ll just be thinking about Barnaby being dropped in a it’s a wonderful (terrible) life timeline where Kotetsu never met Mr Legend. Never had anyone show him that his powers could be used for good. That they were anything but a curse that made him destructive and terrifying.
Barnaby stumbling around confused after the time skip and being Deeply unsettled by the fact Half the hero’s are different. Sure Fire Emblem, Sky High and Dragon kid are there along with the new kids but Blue Rose retired last year, Origami got cut, no one’s even Heard of Rock Bison much less Wild Tiger. There is no buddy system. Fire emblem asks him if he’s okay. His leg aches, muscle deep and their brow furrows in concern. “You wrecked it during that fight with Jake.”
They offer to call Maverick for him. “Under No circumstance-” Work calls.
It’s all about the points. Getting the right angle. Shot. “It’s a hero’s job to save people!” “I think that’s all the proof we need for a head injury, right guys?” “Shut up Ryan and stop sabotaging Cat!” “Make me!”
It’s awful. A nightmare that won’t end. He stumbles to Kotetsu’s apartment after only to be met with strangers. Has to put in a massive order with Liquors Kabugari to met him at all. Kotetsu grumbles about rich assholes doing whatever they want- couldn’t he order from someone in Sternbild? Is greeted by a giant empty apartment. “What hoping to pay your friends in alcohol to help you move in Mr Hero?” Catches the Oh wait you probably don’t have those muttered under his breath.
“You really don’t remember Kotetsu?” “Remember...? Bunny’s got a few screws loose i guess.”
Has him pinned to the wall a second later. “You called me bunny. You have to Remember Kotetsu!”
“What- Jezz Look i only called you that cause you’ve got those pink ears and are always hopping about on the TV! Let me go!”
“Make me. Use your power to make me. I know it’s the exact same as mine!”
He manages to drag Kotetsu to the training center. Everyone’s pretty sure he’s lost it, insisting this beer belly old guy is a Veteran hero. Are rushing to stop him when he tells Kotetsu he’s going to use one Hundred Power on him- better use yours unless you want to be severely injured.
Kotetsu launches him through the wall into the simulation room. Laughs about how they should file a complaint cause that was some cheap plaster huh?
He gets dragged on the next mission in a mask Barnaby clearly made out of paper and one of his old suits- that they literally only had time to turn from pink lights to green. He’s death gripping Barnaby as they fly through traffic. It’s the first time, Kotetsu admits - you asked why i never got married - he hasn’t held anyone in years. “The last person i held was my mom. I broke her ribs because of this stupid power. Glad it worked out for you but all it did for me was make me hurt people!”
“Your power lets you save people. That’s what were going to do, right now.”
It doesn’t... go great. But he saves one little girl. Lowers her slow to the ground and she thanks him before running to her mom - in sudden tears.
“See? Told you. It went great.” “... You call that great? I think i pulled my shoulder.” “Stop complaining old man and turn to the camera.” “Camer-Huh?”
“Introducing my new partner- Wild Tiger!”
(Is he allowed to do that? Definitely not. But THINK of the ratings! Air it Now. Legal can sort it out later!)
“... can i get out of this suit now? I can barely see out of it.”
“After the interviews.”

For a horrible long moment she teetered on the edge, fighting gravity. I leaped up, racing to grab her, pull her back, somehow, save her.
But the tiger wrapped a massive arm around me and held me down.
She fell. Disappeared from sight.
<No! No! No!> I cried.
<Hang on, Marco>, Jake said. <Hang on, man. Hang on, man.>
He held me that way, pinned down. The strength of his tiger morph made my own strength insignificant.
<Hang on, Marco. Hang on, man.>
Dimly, as though I was watching it on an out-of-focus TV, I was aware that battle raged on the opposite peak.
[...]
In the sky a battle raged between the Empire ship and the Blade ship with its fighters. Not my problem anymore.
Nothing was my problem. All I had to do was listen to the voice in my head saying, <Hold on, Marco. Hold on, man. Hold on.>
like if k. a. applegate didn't want me to be a crazy person about this maybe she should have written a different fucking book!!!!
