Shows I Refuse to Believe are Meant for Kids
⚠️spoiler warning, obviously⚠️
1. Avatar: The Last Airbender
Avatar being a kids show is really weird to me for many reasons. For starters, it begins by introducing these kids forced to grow up too fast due to a war that has severely impacted their lives in different ways. Aang, a twelve year old boy, has to handle the responsibility of reestablishing peace and balance in the world while also learning how to master each element. Sokka and Katara, only a couple years older than Aang, have been doing their best to take care of their tribe after all the men left to fight in the war and their mom was murdered by the fire nation. Then there is Zuko who was banished and permanently scarred by his own father at age thirteen and is now desperately searching for the Avatar in hopes that capturing him will make his father love him again. I mean, how twisted is that? All of this is established in the first episode of the series and from there it just gets crazier.
Avatar: The Last Airbender takes some very adult issues and breaks them down to where they can be better understood by kids. This show brings some of humanity's greatest flaws into the light. You want to see animal abuse? Season 2 episode 15. You want to see brainwashing and manipulation? Season 2 episode 16. You want to see merciless violence? Season 1 episode 10 or better yet, just about any episode. People die in this show. They get hurt, tricked, abducted, and tortured. One good example of this is in season 3 episode 8 when Katara is forced to use bloodbending to stop Hama, a waterbender who’s been using her powers to control people.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This show has all the right components for a kids show: adventure, life lessons, and imagination. Kids have been watching and loving the various versions of TMNT for decades now and it’s understandable why. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a great idea and it’s been written very well, but there are times when the fact that it is a kids show is pretty hard to believe. There are so many instances where one of the characters are brutally hurt or the villains do something so asinine that you wonder how the creators managed to get away with it. The best example of this is the season 2 finale of the 2012 version.

youtube
After the lair is infiltrated by the Kraang, the invasion starts and the turtles are scrambling to fight. Leo gets beaten nearly to death by Shredder, the other turtles and April watch as Splinter is knocked unconscious and thrown down a sewage drain, and the episode ends with the team barely making it out of the city alive.
3. Miraculous Ladybug
This is one of my favorite tv shows and watching it brings me so much comfort, but it has its moments that really tug on my heartstrings. Miraculous has been slowly working its way through the plot for four seasons now and while it often seems to consist of more filler episodes than anything, there are many instances where the show has me internally screaming as I cling to the edge of my seat. There are multiple episodes that come to mind that just shout “not meant for kids.” The first is Chat Blanc:
The torment Shadow Moth put on Chat Noir/Adrien, his own son, was so bad that Chat Noir destroyed his father, Ladybug, and the entire world. Then Ladybug/Marinette had to deal with the aftermath and fix everything. Not only did this inflict a roller coaster of emotions on the characters and the people watching the show, but Marinette still lives with the fear and trauma of what happened with Chat Blanc.
Another example is Strike Back:
Piling onto the trauma Marinette already has, Shadow Moth now has the Miracle Box and plans to do whatever it takes to destroy Ladybug and Chat Noir. This final scene of season four shows Marinette/Ladybug devastated after losing so much and Chat Noir coming in to comfort her as Shadow Moth continues to torment them and the rest of the city.
4. Steven Universe / Future
Steven universe has been a notable show on Cartoon Network since it aired in 2013. The beginning season was pretty tame compared to later seasons, but as the show goes on, the themes just get darker. In season one, the core of Steven’s trauma is established. Everyone around him wishes he was never born (instead wishing Rose didn’t give up her life for him), him not having any powers yet and feeling useless, his dad not being around much, and him being in constant fear for his life. That’s not even that half of it!
In the later seasons it’s all pretty much the same with everyone outside of the crystal gems hating Steven and wishing that he were dead and will pay for killing pink diamond and all that. Then a few years later in the spin off Steven Universe Future, he doesn’t have any danger to face any more. Without danger and fighting for his life, who is he? With all this built up trauma, his normal life begins to crumble. This is the first kids show I’ve ever seen even bring up the idea of trauma and life threatening situations because the hero always seems to be okay, but not Steven. He even manages to KILL A GEM due to not being himself. Luckily she was brought back to life, but all of this into a what’s supposed to be kids show is what makes it hard to believe it was made for kids. Here’s a clip from the show discussing his trauma and his struggles.

5. The Owl House
The owl house has been airing on disney since 2020 but I recently got into it about a year ago along with amphibia. I’m going to put amphibia as an honorable mention due to the fact that there was only one particularly dark scene. But the owl house has a lot of eerie concepts that make this show a bit scary for kids. For example, this is the first show for kids that I’ve seen where someone gets badly hurt and there’s visible blood. Also the fact that Hunter is a copy of someone and Belos killed him a bunch of times in his “past lives”. On a sadder note, there was a scene where Luz talks to Amity about her dad passing away and they pick flowers for him. The fact that belos kills and eats palisman so he can stay alive? Literal chills. There are so many sacrificing scenes and sad scenes that are really mature for a kids show. Those are just a few examples, but the show alone without any creepy or dark stuff is still a bit creepy. The Boiling Isles is filled with creepy characters with multiple eyes or big sharp teeth. Here’s an example of one of the darker scenes from the show

******
If kid shows are supposed to teach children about mommy and daddy issues, PTSD, warfare, and physical and psychological abuse, then I’d say these shows have done a great job. I love these shows, I really do, but sometimes I have to wonder who rated these.

i feel like qilin isn't . that bad aside from the animation and the ending culminating in marinette taking the blame bc you can see the intentions weren't bad . i mean like it would've been shoved aside even if it was SAMG imo bc no one gave a fuck about mega leech just bc it had pretty visuals . it's like uhh i wouldn't casually tune in for the miraculous episode where marinette's mom gets racially profiled (and i rewatched it only for completionism's sake) but i thought the akuma fight was entertaining at least ??? idk i guess it felt anticlimatic and weird and we would've been better off without it especially when it got literally censored in france

An Introduction to Vroomiz
Vroom! Vroom! Vroomiz (or Vroomiz, simply) was a South Korean CGI animated television series by SAMG Entertainment that aired between 2010 and 2016. I myself only took interest to the show by the ripe age of 12, right when it was ending. Already underrated in Korea, it fared better in Russia, but still, it is virtually unknown by the West. I LOVE SPREADING MY ENJOYMENT OF THIS SERIES TO ANYONE THAT WILL LISTEN.
It meshes vehicles and animals beautifully, and it is quite literally the show that changed my life forever.
Without ado, some of the many, many characters:
Tumblr media
Speeder's a cheetah. He's a courageous and responsible leader and the main protagonist of the series.
Tumblr media
Tommy's a wolf. He's my favorite. He's Speeder's rival, a bit of a hothead, but look at his smile. I mean, look at him...
Tumblr media
Farrah's a doe. Polite, cautious, realistic and logical, she’s also very sassy and competitive.
Tumblr media
Mactiger's a tiger and Speeder's uncle. Policeman of the town, his easy-going personality makes him trustworthy by all but is exemplary when it comes to his duties.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's Lily, Penny, Randy and Boomer. Racers, they never make it to the podium, and almost never have lines, but they're all big cats and I adore them.
Tumblr media
Buster's a crocodile and despite his size and sharp teeth, the gentlest giant you can find.
Tumblr media
This gentleman doesn't have a name. I called him Phaco in my pre-teen fanfictions.
I don't think I'm going to gifset every single episode, but I'm going to do a lot of them. Did I not say this was going to be a gif blog? Oh well, that then.
I hope you enjoy your visit!

So the Shanghai Special wasn’t nearly as terrible as I had feared it would be!
The good:
Superhero stuff that doesn’t involve fighting off villains. At last. Only took us 3 seasons but that finally happened.
The Cheng family. Well, Wang Cheng. He’s really a good guy. They hired Bing Yin, an actual Chinese actor to voice him instead of the white VA they had in season 1. That’s the bare minimum and I shouldn’t be praising this, but at least they did it.
All that sweet sweet Cheng family history. I loved every second of it. Cheng Xia Ping.
Bastille the Cockatoo.
All the background characters. Their models look actually finished, and good, with varied fashion choices, unlike these monstrous Parisians (though to be fair, we Parisians are a terrifying people). The Mandarin they speak isn’t gibberish, they hired actual Chinese-speaking people for that. Once again, bare minimum, it’s not praise as much as me noting this.
Some of the sets actually look like Shanghai! That hadn’t really been true of the New-York special, but here, the Bund actually looks like the Bund! Good job on that!
Some of Fei’s characterisation! There’s this nice internal conflict within her that I quite enjoyed (even though the way it’s shown… But we’ll come back to that later). Her character animation is pretty good which almost makes up for the more caricatural parts of her character. Thank you SAMG!
Expressive lighting. So much of it. It’s nice, and something the regular show was lacking. Its genuinely good!
Some of the soundtrack is fitting and moody and isn’t orientalist nonsense.
These three kids. I want a spin-off series starring them and Fei.
Wow, antagonists who are adults and capitalists who exploit vulnerable kids are the bad guys and join forces. You know, not angry teenagers. Accumulating large sums of money is only truly possible through the exploitation of other people. Yes. I agree with you there, person that wrote that part of the script.
The Renlings and the Prodigious, from an entertainment standpoint. Cool concept, cool powers, I quite like that.
Hawk Moth getting vaporised. Take that, sucker.
Fei doesn’t turn into a blonde after all! They changed it! Wow! It’s the very bare minimum, once again.
The noodle thing is true!
The bad:
This whole eclipse thing. Was it really necessary? Sort of. Are we made to care about it? Sort of. Not really. Unfortunately not very compelling.
Why Marinette Goes to Shanghai in the First Place. I get that she’s a teenager with a crush but come on.
Some directing observations: Marinette looking at pictures of Adrien on her phone while her uncle is introducing her to their family. That would be fine if she weren’t the audience surrogate, really. The thing is, if she isn’t shown to care all that much about her family and only wants to see Adrien, if she doesn’t ask to know more, the audience is encouraged to feel the same way, i.e. to not care.
She isn’t shown to be spending time with her uncle at all. We get like two minutes at most with only these two alone. Because apparently Marinette getting acquainted with her Chinese family is not that important to her character. Newsflash, when you make a show, you get to decide what is important or not, unless the producers really force your hand. And so what’s important is that Marinette has a crush on Adrien. Wow, never heard about that one before.
All That Kung-Fu nonsense. Is every Chinese character playing a prominent role in this show proficient in martial arts in a way or another? In 2021? Could we stop making Kung-Fu this thing with sort-of-mystical elements in it, and chi strikes and whatnot? Xu Xiaodong would like a few words with you. Yes the fight choreography is decent, but c’mon.
All that “ancestral values” stuff. I mean, really?
The Ugly:
Not specific to this episode, but Marinette really knew nothing about the Chinese side of her family before? Her parents only planned on saving money to travel with her one day but nothing beforehand? Really? That’s terrible writing.
Fei’s backstory is a cliché wrapped inside another cliché from old Kung-Fu and Wuxia movies, and that’s because the special isn’t long enough to do everything it wants to do properly in just 50-something minutes.
These stupid voice-over moments. It feels almost amateurish. If your directing is strong enough as is, the images should be able to do the talking themselves.
Part of the music is good. Part of the music is utter rubbish with all the musical clichés about China you can think about wrapped into one neat package.
Yes it’s a show for children, but the moralising aspect is really shoved in our faces in an unsubtle way this time, and, more annoyingly, it’s very superficial. The whole “purity” thing… What is that even supposed to mean? The show doesn’t do its work, it doesn’t define what that is supposed to mean.
The Prodigious and the Renlings only raise more questions that probably won’t be answered ever, this worldbuilding continues to be a mess.
It’s always about the Love Square, isn’t it? It can’t not be about the Love Square. When some things happen that aren’t Love Square-related for more than five minutes, the special is yanked back to that. Yes, we know Marinette is infatuated with Adrien. Yes we know Adrien is kind of oblivious. We know that. You’ve been telling us that for three seasons straight. We haven’t forgotten. Now do something else for fifty minutes please, since this isn’t following the show’s regular continuity, this would be the perfect chance, right?
Overall, it’s pretty good, for Miraculous, but Miraculous shouldn’t be your standard for goodness.
Not unsalvageable/10, not a complete catastrophe but not nearly as good as it could have been.

(I'm new here, so im sorry if you've already answered this) But how do you feel about the the designs of the heroes from New York? Uncanny Valley's design is just stolen from Alita battle angel and all other designs are just worse versions of dc and marvel heroes. And the character design quality in general seems to be worsening each season
Yeah, I’m mixed on the hero designs. They look nice, but like you said, they’re basically ripoffs of other heroes. I’m not exaggerating either. Astruc flat-out said that was the case with Majestia.
Tumblr media
But remember, his character designs are far more original than those guys at Pixar.
The most unique has to be Uncanny Valley, but I feel she looks more like a mummy than a robot, and they really didn’t do much with her powers other than give her flight and laser eyes.
As for the animation in general, that’s because one of the primary animation companies behind Miraculous Ladybug, SAMG Animation (best known for Sonic Boom, Zak Storm, Miniforce, and Power Battle Watch Car) had stepped back from production after already animating less episodes for the show in the previous two seasons (about half of Seasons 2 and 3 respectively), so animation will be done by three other animation studios.
And the studio who worked on the most episodes was DQ Entertainment, who has become infamous for some of the uglier-looking episodes of the show, like “Captain Hardrock”. You can really tell when you see some of the characters in that episode as opposed to other SAMG-animated episodes.
Tumblr media
So yeah, we should expect the animation to really go downhill this season.
