The Last Monsoonal Skies
Oct. 9, 2023
The New Monsoon runs from around May 15 to October 15. The warm eastern winds of the past couple of days signal the last monsoonal push in the southwest, with one energy shift after another causing the jet stream reversal. Each day DOR clouds transmute and leave us with OR skies.
The jet stream is coming from the west again and some forecasts show as much as a 40% chance of rain, however this may just be OR clouds that the forecasters don't understand. Temperatures will definitely come down and we will likely see cloud cover.
We are getting ready for a massive gifting trip, which you'll be able to follow here. The goal is major winter snow, which I think all of the west will experience. The skies have been powerfully clear and mostly absent of "planes" for a long time now. All "planes" that came through today had no trails or faltering trails which cut in and out.

Triggering allergies, fraying nerves, and alarming fire-prone communities, the Santa Ana winds have long been a fact of life in Southern California – the unadvertised price residents pay for the region's otherwise idyllic weather. And though the winds – which arrive in the fall, peak in December, and depart in the spring -- are invisible to photographers' lenses, cameras have recorded the destruction this recurrent weather phenomenon has wrought throughout the region's history. Southern California usually sits in a delicate climatic balance. On one side, the chilly waters of the Pacific, transported from Alaska via the California Current, stabilize air temperatures and provide a ready source of moisture. On the other, a palisade of mountains blocks the extremes of the desert from coastal communities. The Santa Anas upset that balance, ushering in hot, dry, desert-like conditions. But while the Santa Anas are often called desert winds, the term is misleading; the winds are not simply blowing desert air over Southern California's coastal plain. Instead, Santa Anas result from a cool, dry air mass that hovers over the continental interior of the American West. When that air descends from the higher-elevation basins to sea level, it warms and becomes even drier. (A similar phenomenon, termed a föhn wind, warms Central Europe.) Funneled through the Cajon and San Gorgonio passes, the moving air gains speed and destructive power.

@quothalinguist and I are streaming for another 15 minutes for the first episode of season 5 of LangTime Studio! If you want to catch the end, there's still time!
(Also, I've got terrible allergies, due to the Santa Ana Winds, so if you want to hear what I sound like with a deep-ass, gravelly voice, this is your time.)

_______________
Tim opened the front door for her and followed her into the living room. “Do you want to shower first?” he asked her.
“You could join me, you know,” she said, turning to face him. She ran a hand over his chest. “If you want to.” She stood on her toes and kissed him, her teeth pulling on his lower lip before she turned and walked away, heading to the en suite bathroom instead of the guest bath she had always used in the past. Tim groaned and closed his eyes as he took a deep breath, trying to regain control of his faculties before following her any further into the house.
Lucy turned on the shower and started by removing her shirt. She had left the bathroom door open and heard Tim’s footsteps fall behind her. She turned to look at him and smiled.
He shook his head but matched her cunning smile as he walked toward her. “That is simultaneously the best and worst idea you’ve ever had.”

I know Oregon doesn’t have Santa Ana winds but there’s a fire going on mid state and the wind today has been hot and vaguely smoke scented and THIS is the kind of weather I associate with Fall and Halloween coming, not a nip in the air, and it is making me feel FERAL and RESTLESS.
The season of creativity approaches. Who knows what it might need to destroy on its way in.

Energy Shift Overnight, Fog & Light Rain
Mar. 13, 2024
Fog and light rain overnight and into the morning gave way to sunny DORish skies later, and cold bitter winds tonight. The news is going on about "Santa Ana winds," hot winds from the desert to the east, but so far we are getting the wind from the northwest. This may change overnight, as OR shifts can cause jet stream reversals. If this occurs, an OR shift is the reason, not the ambiguous "Santa Ana winds," which is not an explanation of why the winds are happening at all, just a weird way of describing them.

Santa Ana Winds occur when air from a region of high pressure over the dry, desert region of the southwestern U.S. flows westward towards low pressure located off the California coast. This creates dry winds that flow east to west through the mountain passages in Southern California. These winds are most common during the cooler months of the year, occurring from September through May. Santa Ana winds typically feel warm (or even hot) because as the cool desert air moves down the side of the mountain, it is compressed, which causes the temperature of the air to rise. These strong winds can cause major property damage. They also increase wildfire risk because of the dryness of the winds and the speed at which they can spread a flame across the landscape.
