on lena, jon, and free will.
okay. okay okay okay.
ive been mulling this over for a while because lena kelley is my number 1 blorbo and seeing her being compared to elias confuses me? because i think, from what we know - she's more of a foil to season 4 jon. a jon, who elias successfully turned into *his* archivist. where jon has kept his free will and humanity and rebelled against elias, lena has not. lena is fully subservient.
i think her job, as a middle manager - is more comperable to the archivist position, first of all. she seems to have people above her; and we are seeing her from the perspective of her assistants. alice, gwen and sam are not the jon looking at elias, they're more of the tim/sasha/martin, looking at jon.
there's a definite shift in what we hear from younger lena in the video and who she is now - she's much more terse, stalwart and well. boring; we har so much more genuine emotion from her even in the few snippets of the video we have. Something must have changed between them; she barely even blinks with Gwen's blackmail where she was on the verge of tears on the video. almost as if something happened to shut her down between the events. she seems to shrug off any mention of her “masters” as if they are common knowledge; yet backs off and balks when her position is threatened. i’m guessing it’s safe to say that she’s okay with her position under whoever it is; even desperate to protect it.
contrast this with jon; who was in a similar position as the younger Lena on the video; terrified and angry of what Elias had in store for him, yet feeling his influence all of the same. elias could call for him and he would answer; unwillingly, yes- but he would.
however, in the end, jon chooses to rebel. chooses to break away from the Institute and kill his old boss, whereas lena balks. completely submits herself, mind, body and soul to the corporation that made her.
we don’t know if lena is an avatar or anything, but i think she’s more comparable to an archivist who was successfully molded into Elias’ little loyal eye sentry, than Elias himself.
time will tell if she has a s5 jon moment or not, though.

Miracle Workers - Season 1 (2019) Review
Tumblr media
From Soviet party-member Khrushchev to God. Steve Buscemi is really jumping up the ranks lately.
Plot: A comedy set in the offices of Heaven Inc. When God plans to destroy the Earth, two low-level angels must convince their boss to save humanity. They bet him they can pull off their most impossible miracle yet: help two humans fall in love.
This one’s definitely not for the strong religious folk out there. Making genial fun of heavenly bureaucracy, God in this series is portrayed as a maniacal sociopath who plays around with his angels like puppets in Heaven to his own’s heart desire without actually having any proper ‘good’ side to him. He’s basically like a more cringe-worthy version of God from the Old Testament who massacred many people to teach them a lesson during Noah’s ark or sent the vile plagues to the Egyptians because apparently there wasn’t a more peaceful way to go about it. Heck, in one episode here God tries to find a new prophet among the humans (his search is done through a Tinder-like prophet finding app) but he basically tries to bully him into submission, and when the guy still disagrees he decides to simply kill him off. You get the point, if you are a strong religious man expecting to see a God that is good and righteous then don’t watch this one, as it’ll be quite offensive towards. I, on the other hand, can accept a good parody/comedy if it’s funny, and Miracle Workers is exactly.
Sharing a lot of similarities with The Good Place, both in style and somewhat in substance, so much so that if it were revealed that both shows take place in the same universe I wouldn’t be surprised, Miracle Workers pokes fun at all the aspects of Heaven, painted more as a big business corporation than a fun place in the clouds. It’s literally a workplace comedy, but in Heaven. There are various departments for different subjects. We focus on the department of answering prayers where the innocently good-hearted Daniel Radcliffe, who makes even the lesser funnier lines sound amusing due to his bulls-eye expression, works alone day to day and genuinely happy to be making even the smallest difference to the universe until department newcomer Geraldine Viswanathan, continuing her enthusiastic comedic streak from last year’s Blockers, does something that dooms everyone and all and then both have to step up to the challenge and to God himself and become, you guessed it, Miracle Workers. Roll credits. The best way to describe this series is amusing. There aren’t too many proper laugh-out-loud moments however the show consistently keeps a smile on your face and you simply have a good time. And Steve Buscemi as a bored-God is some very unexpected but fine casting.
It’s only a limited series and I have a few episodes left to watch but as it stands I really hope that this show might possibly become something bigger, as the potential is definitely there. Also, with the show not being appealing in the eyes of the church, I’m sure God has a sense of humour. Even the following line “He created man in His own image” (Gen. 1:27) suggests that if we are capable of humor, so is he. But in all seriousness, if this show’s concept and sacrilegious element offends you there is a simple solution - change the channel.
Overall score: 7/10

So, I finished watching Love Life today and wanted to know someone else's feelings regarding the show. AK is awesome on it, but I'm not sure how I feel about the story as a whole.
I feel you there. I think Love Life was well-done overall, but it didn’t do anything super groundbreaking. HBO has had similar shows for years (Sex and the City, Girls).
In terms of acting, yes, the acting was all very good and AK was stunning. I think she got show off a bit of comedy and a bit of drama, so it was a good acting showcase. Her co-stars like Zoe Chao and Sasha Compere had good chemistry with her. The men who played her love interests were also good.
In terms of story, I personally enjoyed it a lot even if it wasn’t “groundbreaking” or “life-changing”. To me, the most interesting stories were Sara’s storyline and the second half of the Magnus storyline. I guess I just always want more, more, more from AK and obviously you know my wishlist includes more LGBT rep always. It felt very “typical” of the show (and I’ll attribute some of that to AK bc she is an EP) to attribute the LGBT storyline to a side character (and a black woman too). I think they did what could be done within 10 episodes and they were definitely playing it safe with the story overall because it’s an early HBO Max original in its first season.
I think I’m excited for S2 because I love William Jackson Harper and I think he’s great.
