Imagine being Matt's best friend...
Tumblr media
...but you don't know he's daredevil so the injuries he gets usually leave you confused and anytime you try to ask about it he dismisses you and says "it was an accident" or "these things happen y/n it's not a big deal".
This time, when you show up at matt's apartment unannounced, you stumble upon a shirtless matt holding a bag of ice to his torso and you can't help but stare at the cuts and bruises all over his body.
You've been Matt Murdock's best friend for years, and although you've always found it strange how he seems to get injured so frequently, you've never really thought much of it. Matt has always been a bit of a klutz, and he's a lawyer who spends a lot of time on his feet, so it's not entirely surprising that he occasionally gets bumps and bruises. But lately, his injuries have been getting more serious, and you can't help but worry about him.
Every time you ask Matt about his injuries, he dismisses you with a casual "it was an accident" or "these things happen y/n it's not a big deal." You've tried to press him for more information, but he always seems to dodge your questions. It's frustrating, but you care about Matt too much to push him too hard.
One day, you decide to stop by Matt's apartment unannounced. You're worried about him, and you want to check in on him. When he answers the door, he looks surprised but welcomes you inside. As you walk into the living room, you notice that Matt is shirtless and holding a bag of ice to his torso. You can't help but stare at the cuts and bruises all over his body.
"Matt, what happened?" you ask, your concern mounting.
Matt looks down at himself as if only just noticing his injuries. "Oh, this? It's nothing, just a little accident," he says with a dismissive wave of his hand.
"Matt, this doesn't look like 'nothing' to me," you say firmly. "What's going on? Why do you keep getting hurt like this?"
Matt hesitates for a moment, and then he sighs. "Y/n, please. I can't tell you."
"Why not?" you demand, feeling frustrated and angry. "Why won't you trust me? I'm your best friend, Matt. Don't you think I deserve to know what's going on?"
Matt looks away, his jaw clenched. "It's complicated," he says finally.
"Complicated how?" you press. "Is it something dangerous? Is someone hurting you?"
Matt hesitates again, and then he shakes his head. "No, it's not like that," he says, his voice softening a little. "I just... I can't explain it right now. Please, y/n. Just trust me."
But you're not willing to let it go. You're tired of being kept in the dark, and you're worried about your friend. "No, Matt," you say firmly. "I can't just trust you blindly. I need to know what's going on. If you won't tell me, then I'll have to figure it out myself."
Matt looks at you, his expression pained. You can tell he's struggling with something, and it breaks your heart. Finally, he takes a deep breath and looks at you again.
"Okay, fine," he says, his voice rough. "I'll tell you. But you have to promise me that you won't tell anyone. Not even Foggy."
You nod eagerly, feeling a sense of relief. "I promise, Matt," you say. "I won't tell anyone."
And then Matt tells you about his alter ego, Daredevil. He tells you about the danger he faces every day, and the injuries he sustains in the course of his crime-fighting. You're stunned, but also proud of Matt for being such a brave and selfless hero.
"Matt, why didn't you tell me before?" you ask, feeling hurt.
"I didn't want to put you in danger," he says, his voice low. "And I didn't want you to worry about me. But I couldn't keep it from you forever. You deserve to know the truth."
You nod slowly, feeling a mix of emotions. "I understand," you say. "And I'm glad you told me. But please, Matt. Be careful. I don't want to see you get hurt anymore."
"I'll do my best," he says, giving you a small smile. "And thank you, y/n. For understanding."
After Matt opens up to you about his secret identity as Daredevil, the two of you settle into an easy rhythm of conversation. You joke around with each other, teasing and bantering like you always have. But there's a new level of understanding between you now, and it makes everything feel just a little bit more intimate.
"So, does this mean I have to start calling you Daredevil now?" you ask, grinning.
Matt chuckles. "Only if you want to. I'm still the same guy, y/n. Just with a few extra bruises."
You nod, but then you can't resist taking a playful jab at him. "Well, at least now you have an excuse for bumping into things all the time."
Matt laughs, shaking his head. "Hey, I don't bump into things all the time. Just... some of the time."
You both laugh, and then Foggy chimes in. "You two should just start dating already," he says, rolling his eyes.
You and Matt both blush, but then Matt jumps in with a quip. "Sorry, Foggy. I'm already taken. My other girlfriend is justice."
You snort with laughter, and Foggy groans. "Ugh, you're both incorrigible."
There's a brief moment of silence, and then you can't resist making another blind joke. "Well, at least I know I don't have to worry about him checking out other girls."
Matt rolls his eyes, but he's grinning too. "Ha ha, very funny, y/n."
You all laugh again, and for a moment, everything feels light and easy. But then Matt's expression turns serious, and he looks at you with concern.
"Y/n, I mean it," he says. "I don't want you to get hurt because of me. If anything ever happens, promise me you'll stay away from the danger."
You nod, your own expression sobering. "I promise, Matt. But don't worry about me. I can take care of myself."
Matt looks at you for a moment longer, and then he nods. "I know you can," he says softly. "And that's why I trust you."

I keep having this weird feeling. Like, Netflix DD was/is my favorite series ever. My favorite fandom. My favorite story. It has my favorite characters, arcs, dialogue, cinematography, fight scenes, themes. It's helped me process and heal from a lot of shit, thanks to how I related to Matt. In short: the amount of love I have for it knows no limits. You all know this. Obviously. So when it was abruptly canceled in 2018, I was just gutted. And sure, I joined the SaveDaredevil campaign, but in truth, I kinda thought... that was it. It was over. I remember, viscerally, that sinking feeling. I knew I'd always love it, and I'd continue to follow Charlie through his other works, but after a year or so it just felt like it was clear it wasn't coming back. I either needed to move on, or find a way to allow me to spend more time in that universe even without the show - clearly I chose the latter, ending TRT's hiatus in 2020 when I had more time to write fic. But I cannot understate how I did that with the full knowledge that DD was over.
That went on for years.
Years of nothing.
Years of a tiny fandom on life support, grimly holding onto our love with the barest of fingertips, reblogging and writing for anyone still around, including ourselves.
Years of sweet interviews where the cast would mention DD, little scraps of dopamine and nostalgia that kept us warm.
Years where there wasn't much hope, but we loved it anyway, we did, we still did, even as we understood why people moved on.
What we loved was dead, but we picnicked on its grave anyway.
If you'd told me, at any point then, that one day as we sat on that grave, Matt's hand would come bursting up through the soil right through the center of our memorial devil cookie tray, I'd have given you a whole lotta side eye. Because that's what this feels like. We laid this series to rest, and now Matt's here covered in grave dirt, and he has promptly sat down to eat our memorial cookies with us like we didn't spend years mourning his death.
It's such an odd feeling. Suddenly there are new things to buy! New appearances! New gifs! New interviews and shows and old fans coming back and new fans coming in and new fics being written, and con events and behind the scenes clips, and this whole time I'm floating in this bright haze because this was all gone, it was all dead, you were dead, I wrote for you because I missed you, because I wanted to keep you alive, and now you're here again.
I have no idea what to do with this feeling. But it makes me very, very happy.

Charlie Cox: ‘I love being a superhero — I thought that ship had sailed’
Charlie Cox on the return of Daredevil, the joys of sea swimming in Dalkey and his rewarding character-driven work in RTÉ’s Kin
Tumblr media
Kirsty Blake Knox   April 27, 2023 (X)
Charlie Cox is a busy man; he smiles widely from the back of a car as it ferries him from a physical therapy session to the set of Disney’s Daredevil.
“We’ve just kind of started, it’s really great. Pretty intense, hence the physical therapy,” he says.
Cox has returned to play Matt Murdock, the blind lawyer-slash-superhero.
The show started life on Netflix and ran for three seasons before it was cancelled in 2018.This resulted in an online #SaveDaredevil campaign which resulted in 400,000 signatures begging Marvel to bring him back.
It took a little time; a contractual clause prevented any characters from the Marvel-Netflix shows from appearing in any non-Netflix projects for two years after cancellation.
And now Cox is suiting up again in his Spandex costume, running around punching people in the face and fighting for justice. It’s a demanding shoot — the series is 18 episodes long. And he is a fan of doing as many of his stunts as possible.
“I kind of get involved as much as I’m allowed to and is appropriate. Obviously, the stunt team are professionals and there are things they can do that I can’t even get close to,” he says. “I feel like the name of the game is to get as involved as you can… it makes the scenes more realistic.”
Cox took on the role, which had once been played by Ben Affleck in 2015. At the time, landing the role came as a shock.
“I never thought of myself as being appropriate casting for an American superhero. That never really occurred to me,” he says. “And in my 20s, a lot of my friends, and a lot of British actors, had gone and done that already. So when I got to 30 I was pretty confident that ship had sailed. I was very fortunate to get a character that I’ve now been playing for almost 10 years. It’s unbelievable.”
Cox is a father to two young children (seven and three) but they are a little young to fully grasp the role their dad plays in the Marvel Universe.
“I’m not sure they quite understand… One of the books we read him (his three-year-old) is called Superbat. A bat who is a superhero. But that’s his only real understanding. And so he thinks that I’m Superbat,” he laughs.
Cox realised he wanted to be an actor while in school and studied at Bristol Old Vic drama school. His first big break came in 2007 when he starred in Stardust alongside Robert De Niro and Michele Pfeiffer.
He has performed on the West End and Donmar Warehouse, in dramas like Treason and took on the role of Owen Sleater in Martin Scorsese’s Boardwalk Empire. For Irish viewers, we can see Cox on our screens every Sunday night, as Michael Kinsella in gangland drama Kin.
It’s pretty unusual for Marvel Universe actors to appear in a homegrown Irish drama. But Cox’s wife is executive producing the series. When another project he was attached to fell through, he read the scripts and felt compelled to be part of it.
“I’ve been working probably 20-plus years, and there’s a handful of times where I’ve read a script and felt like I’m reading something written by a truly brilliant writer,” he says. “And that quality of scripts never ceased. Sometimes you can get a really good pilot episode. But then as you get deeper into the season, some of the writing starts to disintegrate a little bit, but with Peter (McKenna) that was never the case.”
Obviously, the scale of production is a lot smaller on Kin than other productions, but he says these productions can be just as, if not more, rewarding to work on.
“If you have a limited budget, the way you handle that is you write long character-driven scenes… So weirdly, the lower budget stuff often is more appealing. Because you get to really get deep into the character and the relationships and the dynamics… it’s sort of like theatre. So, from my point of view, sometimes that stuff is more appealing.”
He continues; “I’ve learned I’m not precious about my character’s involvement. I don’t care much if my character does cool stuff … what I care about is, ‘are they moving?’”
Tumblr media
He says this is some of the appeal of playing Michael.
“This life that he’d come from…and now he’s trying to rekindle a relationship with his daughter. [The] vulnerability, and the desire, and the need to fundamentally change his nature. That was really exciting to me.”
Cox perfected his Irish accent by listening to the voice of former Dublin goalkeeper, Shane Supple. He got up to speed with Ireland’s gangland scene by listening to podcasts featuring award winning crime journalist Nicola Tallant.
“I was kind of blissfully ignorant of the whole thing,” he says. “When I actually read the first two scripts, I just thought it was all fiction and then I agreed to do the part and I started doing my research. I was like, ‘oh, shit, this stuff is happening. It’s current and it’s happening right now.’”
Despite the violent nature of the series, he found filming and living in Ireland to be idyllic.
He and his family were based in the seaside village of Dalkey — where Matt Damon was holed up during lockdown. Cox became a sea swimming fanatic while residing there.
“I absolutely loved being there… I had conversations with my wife about moving to Dublin because I loved it so much. It’s not really viable with my job… Season one, we’re in lockdown. We lived in Hanover Quay, which was delightful…
“Season two, we moved to Dalkey. I felt like it was one of the best kept secrets in Europe… I was swimming in Vico every day… I found it to be like a haven. And I would love an opportunity to go back at any stage.”
Tumblr media
Cox is extremely polite and amenable. And modest — despite his success, Cox says he still suffers professional insecurities.
“I never think I’m going to be hired,” he laughs. “I read years ago that Christopher Walken always thinks his job he’s doing is going to be the last time he is hired. I don’t quite have that, but I certainly identify with it. I’ve never felt like ‘Oh, I’m always going to be hired.’”
He says this comes with some advantages, as it makes him more present.
“I’m filming in New York and I’m lucky enough that I’m still able to play a kind of a lead in a TV show,” he says. “You know, the time is ticking on that in a big way. And so I certainly don’t want to wish that away.
“It would be easy to kind of bemoan the amount of hours you have to work, and missing the family, but there’ll come a time where I would kill to be able to be the lead in the TV show. I think the trick is to really enjoy it while it lasts.”
As he makes his way out of his car and towards his makeup chair, I ask if he has any projects outside of Daredevil coming down the tracks.
“I’m going to be doing this until the end of the year. And then I’ll be back on the panic station wondering if I am ever going to work again,” he laughs.

#SAVE1899 #SAVE1899
Season 1 was only the beginning. We know Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese had more up their sleeves, knowing Dark. We were robbed! BUT we can fight. Hope is not lost! Remember that thanks to the #SaveDaredevil campaign, that show was revived. A lot of shows got saved because of fans fighting back. And we can do the same with 1899. - What is lost, will be found.
Don't forget to share and spread the word! What you can do:
• Binge watch the show!! Even if it's just background noise, pump up those viewing hours and ratings!
• Go to IMDb, RottenTomatoes, Google and all that kind of stuff and search/rate 1899. Making it the most searched and good rated series also sends a message!
• You can fill in requests for movies and series which you would like the see, at the Netflix Helpcenter on their website. Underneath Quick Links. Fill in "1899".

[ID: Instagram photo from account teamkfmartialarts of Charlie Cox and a white male with gray and black hair and beard. Both are in training gear, black shorts with a branded black shirt on Charlie and an identical one in green on the other man, and they're kneeling on a mat in front of a sign that reads Team KF Martial Arts.
Caption below reads: "It has been great working with Charlie over the last while, helping him prepare for his next role. I was a little hesitant when I was first asked, as my expertise is being a coach to fighters. But after meeting Charlie, I quickly realised he wanted to train exactly as a fighter. He returned to the gym after each tough session I put him through and I was blown away by his work ethic and willingness to learn - the same characteristics needed to be an elite fighter. He fit in straight away with the team and his improvement from day one to now has been insane to see. I'm really excited to see some of this come through on the show. Videos of what myself and Charlie have been working on, dropping shortly."
Below that is a series of hashtags, followed by a comment from account savedaredevil that reads: "Incredible!! We can't wait to see the results of his hard work!" and a hands up emoji at the end.]
