#service dog question
Note
tbh i’d love to hear more about service dogs but i don’t have a particular question in mind. could you start with the basics? what kinds of service dogs are out there and how are emotional support animals different (or if they’re not)? common breeds? i want to know so much but i don’t know where to begin!
So here's an article about what a service dog is in the US (though the airplane thing is out of date). The short version is (for the US):
Service dogs are trained to specifically mitigate one person's disability(ies), with one or more task or work behaviors and are allowed anywhere their handler is (with a few exceptions). There is also no documentation or equipment required to "prove" a service dog is legitimate though business employees can ask two questions to verify it's a legitimate service dog.
Emotional support animals (ESAs) can be any species, require a psychiatric disability, but don't require any training, and aren't given special access except for living situations. So they can't go to the grocery store. Housing (apartments, dorms, etc.) can request documentation of the disability and need for an ESA.
Therapy animals can technically be any species, are trained to help *other* people, and are only given special permissions (like going to a hospital) by each individual location, generally only at certain scheduled times, and only with their handler. Most therapy dog teams are certified through an organization and do their outings through that organization but this varies and there's nothing legally requiring documentation. But they still can't go to, say, a grocery store or restaurant.
The EVEN SHORTER version is:
Service Dog = one person, trained, can only be a dog or miniature horse, & given public access
ESA = any species, no training, no public access (only for housing), requires psychiatric disability
Therapy dog = any species, training, only allowed "public" access when given specific permission ahead of time by the business, helps *others* not handler
I'll get into common breeds, what service dogs can be trained for, and other things in another post because I don't want this to get too long lol.

I have a friend who will hopefully getting a service dog and while I know appropriate etiquette for dogs that are outside and actively working, I'm not sure how I should interact with them when they're off duty and at home. I was wondering if you had any general advice since I'm sure it varies or could point me to some good resources for my own research.
-Len
Thanks for trying to be a solid supportive friend!
The best thing to do is ask your friend how they want their dog handled at home. Service dogs have very high standards of behavior that will have to be maintained even "off duty", so it's very likely that there will be basic rules like not giving table scraps, and not distracting if the dog does need to task in the home, but each team is unique in what is needed and what is allowed in down time.
The best resource is going to be your friend and maybe their dog trainer (if they are working with one). Just have an open conversation about their expectations for visitors and their SD in their home.

I always wondered on and off about what my fursona would be if I was a furry, as if the answer wasn't obvious and as if it wasn't cheetah. On account of the nerves.

So I've had some very negative comments on Monster on Instagram. All of you guys have been so kind about him and his job, but I kinda just want to rant a bit.
He is a 10 month old maxi cockapoo. Standard poodle/ cockerspaniel mix. I personally do not support the doodle trade and the ethics behind the breeding of doodles but that's a story for another time.
He is a service dog in training but he does no public work at the moment as that's not something I really need.
He is owner trained. I've done all the training myself.
He is trained with two main tasks at the moment. Self harm interrupting because when I get over stimulated, I scratch my skin and pull my hair. He also is trained to do deep pressure therapy to calm me down in the event of a melt down.
A lot of people do not believe I need him. But honestly, he's helped me so much in the last 7 months I've had him. I haven't scratched my skin open in 6 months. I'm able to grow my hair out because I'm not terrified of pulling it all out. These are just two examples.
He will learn other tasks as he gets older. Shutting cupboard, I forget to close. Retrieving meds. Stabilizing me when I get dizzy due to my somatization disorder.
I guess the big problem is so many people do not believe mental illness and neurodivergency is a reason to have a service dog.
If you have any questions about service dogs or monster in specific, ask them because I'm one of the few people in the service dog community who will answer them.
Thanks for letting me rant.

Girlfriend thinks I might have glaucoma 😀 I might actually just kill myself
Glaucoma could cause blindness, meaning I would lose not only *even more of my independence* but also the only hobbies I value like drawing and such. It would also mean I can no longer take the majority of antidepressants, which I need. Literally the only reason I've been not attempting is because I'm waiting to get back on my meds
