Vegan/Vegetarian shopping list:
Pre Made salad bags (it’s a lot cheaper to just buy bagged salad and add to it, then buying a bunch of ingredients that will go bad if not used)
Make a list of fruits and vegetables that you like and get them (some times if you get the funky shaped ones you get a few cents off, even if you don’t that stops the funky shaped produce from being tossed)
Nut butters (most almond and peanut butters are vegan, jelly and Jams aren’t because they’re made with gelatin)
Bread, check the ingredients because a lot of breads are accidentally vegan/vegetarian ( Vegetarian/Vegan (link) Sandwiches will be your best friend)
Pasta (like bread a lot of pasta is accidentally vegan, CHECK THE INGREDIENTS)
Rice and beans are some of the cheapest things to buy, buy them dry and you can have them for a while in your pantry
Google vegan ramen, (if you’re like me and love spicy ramen then you’ll be happy to know Samyang 2x spicy hot chicken flavor Ramen in the red pack is VEGAN they use artificial chicken flavor rather then animal products. Vegan Kimchi regular and spicy is a lot easier to find then you may think just look for ones without fish sauce and shrimp)
Tofu (tofu is very versatile and it’s great source of vegan/vegetarian protein made from soy, it takes flavor beautifully and it’s relatively cheap firm/extra firm is best)
Cheese (there are so many vegan cheese options, for grated parmigiana follow your heart has both grated and shredded, Violife has a block. Violife has the best shredded substitutes, and singles. Daiya is a little weird in my opinion however they’re cheddar dairy free Mac and cheese is amazing (you just gotta use different pasta then it comes with)
Meat substitutes ( We’ve come a long way with decent vegan meat substitutes, beyond meat makes a whole variety of plant based meat substitutes that are very tasty especially if you’re still craving that meaty texture. Impossible meat substitutes also has amazing plant based meat substitutes, Impossible also has vegan chicken nuggets that tastes like McDonald’s and even have dino shaped ones. Light life has everything from vegan sausage crumbles to Bacon, the vegan bacon and hot dogs are amazing)
Eggs (just egg and simply egg are planted based substitutes for eggs, they’re liquid like an egg beater but can be used in place of eggs from a scramble to a baking ingredient)
Dairy (Vegan milk/coffee creamer you got options coconut, almond, soy, oat, pea protein. Pick what you like best. Personally California farms Oat milk in original and California farms oat vanilla creamer are my favorites. I’ll throw cream cheese and Yogurt in here as well Kite Hill regular and Strawberry cream cheese are my favorite, Kite Hill blue berry, and Strawberry vegan yogurt are my favorite. MIYOKO’S vegan butter)
Snacks (Lenny and Larry’s plant based chocolate chip cookies, Spudsy sweet potato puffs they have a million different flavors I like the hot fries. Vegan rob’s dragon puffs these are the vegan equivalent to hot Cheeto puffs but without the red dye 40. Vegan rob’s also has cheese puffs)
Sauces (Anne’s goddess dressing is very tangy, Diaya blue cheese and Caesar dressings are amazing, can be thick though, they also have ranch but I got a vegan homemade ranch recipe. Hot sauce, Franks, Cholula, Tabasco, and Tapatío are vegan. Ketchup& mustard are vegan. Hellmans and follow your heart have vegan mayonnaise,Sir Kingston’s and Follow your heart also have chipotle Mayo. Follow your heart also has vegan sour cream)
Seasonings (seasons you should have in your cabinet click here, the dollar tree sells all these for a dollar and most grocery stores sell adobo)

I'm creating a new book rec post containing my new favorite thing -> Comfort Fantasy with Food Aesthetic.

Legends & Lattes - 💚💖☕
Viv the Orc is retiring from the life of blood, death and adventuring to open up her own little coffee shop.
Tumblr media
“You can smell it though, can’t you? Like roasted nuts and fruit.”
Cal squinted at her. “Thought you said you drank it?”
Viv nibbled one experimentally, tasted the warm, bitter, dark flavor as it coated her tongue. She felt she needed to explain. “They grind it into powder and then run hot water through it, but there’s more to it than that. When the machine shows up, I’ll show you. Gods, the smell of it, Cal. This is just a ghost of it.”
She sat back on the flagstones and rolled the bean between her thumb and forefinger. “I told you I came across it in Azimuth, and I remember following the smell to the shop. They called it a café. People just sat around drinking it from these little ceramic cups, and I had to try it, and…it was like drinking the feeling of being peaceful. Being peaceful in your mind. Well, not if you have too much, then it’s something else.”

The Dragon With a Chocolate Heart - 🐉🍫❤️
A very young dragon who has the great misfortune to come across a wizard that turns her into a human girl (oh, the horror) but also introduces her to CHOCOLATE!
Tumblr media
As he stirred the hot chocolate, he kept on whispering to himself the whole time in that funny rhythmic chant, his whole body taut with concentration. I suppose I could have listened harder, to try to pick out his words, but really, when had I ever cared about anything that humans said? Besides, I was far too busy enjoying the smells from his pot. If I could have, I would have wrapped myself up in those steamy tendrils of scent and rolled around in them for hours. Hot chocolate. Talk about a treasure fit for a dragon!
I’d have to look for more chocolate in his luggage when I finished here. I already knew I would have to have hot chocolate again. Lots of it.

A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking - 🧙‍♀️✨🍪
Mona the fourteen-year-old magicker finds a dead body, gets accused of murder and has to save her city from a deadly conspiracy. But what can she do when the only magic she's got is power over baked goods?
Tumblr media
I flushed. As wizards go, I’m pretty much the bottom of the barrel. Even Master Elwidge, who’s got just enough magic to take knots out of wooden boards, is better than me. Dough and pastries are about all I can do. The great wizards, the magi that serve the Duchess, they can throw fireballs around or rip mountains out of the earth, heal the dying, turn lead into gold. Me, I can turn flour and yeast into tasty bread, on a good day.
And occasionally make carnivorous sourdough starters.
Pls add recs if thou knowest more.

Flora: Goddess of Flowering Plants
Tumblr media
╔⏤⏤⏤╝❀╚⏤⏤⏤╗
“Perhaps you may think that I am queen only of dainty garlands; but my divinity has to do also with the tilled fields. If the crops have blossomed well, the threshing-floor will be piled high; if the vines have blossomed well, there will be wine; if the olive-trees have blossomed well, most buxom will be the year; and the fruitage will be according to the time of blossoming. If once the blossom is nipped, the vetches and beans wither, and thy lentils, O Nile that comest from afar, do likewise wither. Wines also bloom, laboriously stored in great cellars, and a scum covers their surface in the jars. Honey is my gift. ‘Tis I who call the winged creatures, which yield honey, to the violet, and the clover, and the grey thyme. ‘Tis I, too, who discharge the same function when in youthful years spirits run riot and bodies are robust.”
Ovid, Fasti book 5, Line 261.
╚⏤⏤⏤╗❀╔⏤⏤⏤╝
The Goddess Flora, originally a figure of the Sabine’s religion, was introduced into the Roman Pantheon by the Sabine king Titus Tatius who ruled alongside Romulus, the founder of Rome. Therefore, Flora was an ancient goddess that appeared before the rise of the Roman Republic. Flora would become conflated with the Greek Nymph Goddess Chloris.
She became the subject of the famous painter Sandro Botticelli’s “Primavera” (below) and details Her transformation from Chloris into Flora when Zephyrus (also known as Favonius), the Western Winds and soon to be consort, kissed Her. Botanists have identified many of the flower species that adorn Her in the artwork which include: Forget-me-nots, Hyacinths, Periwinkle, Pheasant’s eye, Anemone, Myrtle, Wild Roses, Violets, Cornflowers, and Wild Strawberries, all of which bloom in Tuscany in May. These flowers are suitable offerings to Her.
Tumblr media
In Rome, it was pertinent to assign a Flamen (“he who burns offerings”), or devoted high priest, to certain major and minor gods. The Goddess Flora was assigned a Flamen, called Flamen Floralis, along with fourteen other Gods of the Roman pantheon.
As a minor Goddess, being assigned a flamen was out of the ordinary. According to Ovid, this was the result of the birth of Mars. When Jupiter birthed Minerva from his head, Juno became jealous because she felt betrayed. She was upset that Jupiter did not need her help conceiving and birthing a child. So, Juno went to her friend Flora who had a magick flower that impregnated anyone or anything that touched it. Flora touched Juno with her magick flower and Juno immediately became pregnant with Mars. When he was birthed, he was forever grateful to Flora and promised to watch over her blooming fields and have a flamen assigned to her. This, of course, contradicts the Greek myth in which Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera. Additionally, this explains Mars' role as an agricultural and war deity.
Flora is known as the goddess of flowers, and fruit-bearing and flowering plants. She is heavily revered in May springtime and a six day festival known as Floralia was dedicated to her which began on April 28th and ended on May 3rd. The festival included adorning one's bodies with flowers and bright colors, dancing, drinking, feasting, theater, singing, wearing perfumes, and general merriment that accompanies the beginning of Spring.
Tumblr media
Painting by: Evelyn De Morgan, 1894, Flora.
Her spring and flower associations brought forth symbols of youth, nature, vegetation, gardens, fertility, sex, desire, transformation, and abundance. Her marriage to the West Winds also contributes to her Springtime associations. With these associations in mind, some offerings that would appease her might include:
┌──❀*̥˚───❀*̥˚─┐
🍊Spring garden fruits and vegetables
💮Pressed and dried flowers
🕯Citrus scented candles
🌼Freshly picked flowers
🌿Hand-made wreaths
🧺Hand-made baskets
🧴Floral Perfumes
👑Flower Crowns
💐Bouquets
🌺Garlands
🫒Olive oil
🍯Honey
🍷Wine
🥛Milk
└───❀*̥˚───❀*̥˚┘
Some activities that you can do in Her honor can include things like planting flowers in the garden, growing seasonal fruits and vegetables, general upkeep of gardens and soils, creating scented cleansing sprays and soaps, making flower crowns and other inspired crafts, writing poetry and prayers dedicated to Her, strolling the countryside, wearing brightly colored outfits, and taking care of the gorgeous Earth we live on today.
Pray to Her for abundance, personal growth, positivity, protection of gardens, and thank Her for bountiful spring fruits and vegetables. She is a very loving goddess and deserves recognition for the many qualities She has brought to my life and to that of others.

The sabbats are holidays celebrated throughout the year on solstices, equinoxes, and the midpoints between them. These sabbats form the Wheel of the year.
There is a controversy surrounding the dates of these holidays, as people celebrate them all over the earth, not only in the northen hemisphere but in the southern too.
One viewpoint is that the Sabbats should be celebrated as they were originally created to be... in other words, Samhain is October 31st, regardless of where you live. In the Southern Hemisphere, even though you are just gearing up to summer on October 31st, this perspective says that you celebrate the cleansing and releasing, the honouring of the dead just as you would if you lived in the Northern Hemisphere. The other viewpoint (the one I personally agree with) is that you should celebrate when you feel like the season corresponds with the holiday, in other words, your craft, your rules. So if you live in the southern hemisphere, you have the choice.
I’ll be writing the dates for each holiday starting with the northen hemisphere and then the dates that many people celebrate them in the southern hemisphere

An early Mabon post
Tumblr media
Hey everybody ! :) mabon may be a teensy bit away still but the days are passing fast and the day is slowly nearing! I wanted to make an informational and fun post telling some stuff about mabon and what you can do, movies to watch 🧡
What is Mabon?
Mabon is the autumn equinox dated for September 21-24 this year (2020). The autumnal equinox occurs when the sun crosses the equator on its apparent journey southward, and we experience a day and a night that are of equal duration. Up until Mabon, the hours of daylight have been greater than the hours from dusk to dawn. This is the time to look back not just on the past year, but also your life, and to plan for the future. It marks the middle of the harvest, Mabon is a time of rest and celebration, after the hard work of gathering the crops. Warm autumn days are followed by chill nights, as the Old Sun God returns to the embrace of the Goddess. All Sabbats are occasions to express gratitude to the God and Goddess for the blessings in our lives, but Mabon is particularly so, coming at the height of the harvest season.
How to celebrate Mabon
You can start by decorating your altar if you have one with acorns, pinecones, seasonal fruits and nuts, and some of the colored leaves that drop from the trees in your location. Baskets are good things to use and scythes since they are symbols of harvest. As for candles, autumn colors can be used such as reds, yellows, oranges, golds, and browns. If you have a feast, whether solo or with others, include seasonal vegetables like onions, potatoes, carrots and other root vegetables. Spellwork related to protection and security is appropriate now, as are workings for self-confidence, prosperity, harmony and balance. If you are one who struggles with seasonal depression during the fall and winter months, use this time to set an intention for inner peace and strength. You might make and charge a talisman for this purpose, to accompany you through the next two seasons. You can also do things that aren’t related to witchcraft if you feel unmotivated or don’t have the time. Cozy up and watch some appropriately themed movies maybe even some horror or Halloween movies, make some hot chocolate or a good cup of tea with appropriate herbs to settle down and drink, you can even do things like read or make some cool looking pieces of art to either put on your altar, use as decoration, or just because you want to.

*: Strawberries (drabble)
Tumblr media
Oz watched from their small table in the cottage as his husband carefully washed the fruit he had brought in from the garden. He watched as he ran water over each piece and piled them into little sections on the counter. Then he watched as he magicked some jars and the fruit and started storing them away, the fruit turning instantly into jam once inside their new glass homes.

He noted, however, that the strawberries remained on the counter, glistening with droplets of water as Abe busied himself.

Oz’s head tilted to the side, watching then as Abe turned back to the strawberries and eyed them like he was about to judge them for a county fair. Was Rueda going to have a county fair? Did their market do such things? He doubted it. He wanted to ask Abe what he was doing, why he was eyeing them so intently, but, a moment later, Abe plucked the largest and reddest strawberry from the bunch and -

”Mmmmm…..” Abe’s eyes rolled up into the back of his head as he took a bite, the sound of it juicy and nearing R rated as Abe moaned into another bite of it.

Oz squirmed some where sat, face turning a shade of pink, blinking furiously as Abe moaned into another bite, then another.

”These strawberries are so good.” Abe muttered, mouth full as he grabbed a couple more. ”I swear, they’ve got to be the sweetest shit I’ve ever put in my mouth,” He turned to Oz then, shrugging with a sly smile. ”Besides you, of course.”

Oz’s face burned hotter and he cleared his throat, ducking his head and going back to the pattern he was designing, giving a little side glance at Jinx’s room to see her still napping on her bed. ”You like strawberries that much, huh?” He asked.

Abe scoffed. ”Like? I LOVE. Strawberries are possibly a gift from the gods.”

Oz took note of that.

Abe loved strawberries?

Oz couldn’t get that piece of information out of his mind for whatever reason. Maybe it was the way Abe moaned when he bit into them - or the way his eyes sparkled with happiness as he ate them one after the other. Whatever the reason, Oz was focused on strawberries and how happy they made his husband.

Maybe that’s why he came up with the idea to give Abe’s strawberries a magical twist.

Abe loved them and he loved Abe, so why shouldn’t Abe get very special strawberries to eat?

It took some looking at the library in the middle of town, but eventually he found a spell on how to grow your food into special shapes.

The book was nearly in pristine condition - he figured not many Ruedans cared about changing the shape of their food.
He copied the spell on a piece of fabric, then hurried home. While Abe and Jinx fished, he went out to the garden and cast the spell over the strawberries - now all there was left to do, was wait.

Abe rose early in the morning one Saturday. The sun was just beginning to rise and he could hear the cluck, cluck, cluck of the chickens as they pecked around, looking for food outside the cottage. He stretched his lanky form some, then glanced over at Oz who was still fast asleep. Fuck, he could watch him sleep for ages, to be perfectly honest.

He looked so much more peaceful here in Rueda than he had anywhere else.

Content, comfortable, happy.

A soft smile spread over Abe’s lips and he rolled over a bit, grasping onto Oz’s arm and leaning forward where he planted his lips, kissing him tenderly and breathing him in. He wanted him to stay like this, content and happy, for as long as he could. They’d both been through enough hell - they deserved this. They deserved a peaceful life.

Nuzzling him with his nose a moment later, Abe planted one more kiss on his shoulder before getting up.

He dressed and made his way into the kitchen (which was only a few steps away) and noted that they had some eggs and bread and cheese, but he felt like they needed something more.

”Daddy?” Jinx’s voice could suddenly be heard.

Abe glanced over at the doorway to Jinx’s room. She stood there, holding onto her doll, Gabriella, and rubbing her eyes sleepily. ”Hey, chicken.” He came over and kissed the top of her head. ”It’s still early, go back to bed.”

”I can’t sleep. I had a bad dream.”

He frowned dramatically at that, ”What about?”

”Bad stuffs.” Jinx shrugged.

Abe clicked his tongue and motioned to his and Oz’s bed, ”Go climb in bed with Papa. He’ll keep you safe from the bad stuffs.” He said then, cupping her face affectionately. ”Cuddle up to him while I go get us some fruit for breakfast.”

She nodded and shuffled her little feet over to the bed, climbing up with a few grunts, then crawled over to the free space beside Oz and scurried under the covers before curling up against him. Oz, whether he was awake or still asleep, turned and curled himself around her, his arms holding her close.

Abe’s heart swelled at the sight.

His family was perfect.

He could have stood there and stared at them all morning, but eventually he made his way out into the garden with a basket hanging on his arm. ”Lets see……Some blueberries….and some holly plums….and some sweet beans….and-“ He stopped, hand in mid-reach, as he stared at the strawberries. There, in front of him, was a strawberry plant adorned with heart shaped strawberries. He blinked a bit, wondering if his eyes were playing tricks on him - but no - each plant had strawberries on it that were heart shaped.

At first he was confused, but, slowly, he began to think about Oz and the time he spent out in the garden the week before.

He had done this, hadn’t he?

Abe’s chest swelled with warmth, his lips tugging upwards into a smile.

”I see you finally saw your strawberries.”

He glanced over to find Oz there, Jinx in his arms, smiling back at him. He had been out of the house for a good thirty minutes or so. Abe figured Jinx couldn’t fall back asleep, so, here they were, with him. ”How? Why?”

Oz shrugged. ”You love strawberries…and I love you.” He said, voice soft, his gaze filled with nothing but pure adoration for the other man.

”Heart berries!” Jinx exclaimed then, wiggling from her Papa’s arms and over to where her daddy was knelt down. ”I want some heart berries too!”

Abe chuckled and nodded, ruffling her hair. ”You can have all the heart berries you want, chicken.” He then glanced back at Oz, his smile still there, but wide with awe, ”….Save some for me though. Your Papa went through a lot of trouble to make those.”

Book haul as tall as a Bean!
Hekate and I got to go to the fancy independent bookstore in town! Then, we found a brand new (less than a year old) secondhand bookstore! The Little Free Library nearby had two great finds to top off the week!

What is Ostara?
Ostara, Eostre, Vernal Equinox, and Spring Equinox are all beautiful ways to refer to the celebration of Spring every year! As the wheel of the year turns again, we find ourselves at a new point of balance within the year.
Ostara is a time when the day and night are equals in time, when the God and the Goddess are equals in love, and the true understanding of life and energy can be seen.
During Ostara, Wiccans and Pagans celebrate the ability to create, manifest, love, and gain a deeper understanding of life. Physically, new life is beginning to spring up from seemingly dead earth, love is in the air, spawning creation, and energy is returning to earth, as the days begin to grow longer.
Metaphysically, the Goddess and God energies of the Universe are coming together as one, birthing the energy of creation. The Goddess supplies the energy of Earth as she begins to grow into a Mother; the God supplies the energy of the Sun, as he grows in strength and power.

Isolation update! I was planning on doing the prompt of "Sight" for @gumnut-logic challenge for the next chapter of the big fat fic (which I'm still gonna do) but this came out too. So I let the boys roll with it.
Day 76 of Isolation on Tracy Island
“Scott?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you know anything about this?” I held up my headphones, which had been previously missing for maybe the last eight months and that I had just found in the cutlery drawer.
“Yeah, they’re headphones.”
“Thank you Captain Obvious, I meant why are they in with the knives and forks?”
He shrugged. “Why are you asking me?”
“Because you were hiding socks around the place for over three weeks.”
“Only because it took you so long to give them back to me. I started after we watched Half Blood Prince, I thought it would make you laugh but you just kept ignoring them.”
“Oh, I’m so sorry I didn’t realise you needed to be freed!”
“Of course I did! I was your house elf!”
“House elves do chores! They don’t sit around being fed and demanding attention!”
“I’m a progressive house elf that is fighting for elf rights!”
“No you aren't, you’re a lazy bum!”
“Lazy? Me?”
“Yes, you!”
“I will never understand the conversations you two have,” John muttered as he pushed past us to fill his mug with the coffee I had just brewed.
“It’s affectionate arguing,” Scott laughed, sliding his mug over to John for a top up.
“So no one knows why my headphones have just suddenly turned up from wherever they vanished to and magicked themselves into the kitchen?”
“Nope,” Scott gave up waiting for John to pour him a drink and stole mine. I narrowed my eyes in his general direction. John slid a fresh cup over to me. Such a great guy.
“You know,” John mused. “I found one of my world geography books in the bathroom cupboard.”
“I found my utility knife in the piano stool,” Virgil added, wandering over to snag some toast that had just popped up.
“I just made that,” I told him.
“Thank you,” he continued to butter it. I stared at his plaid clad back for a few seconds but when he failed to burst into flames I gave up and dropped some more bread into the toaster.
“Now that I think about it,” Scott mused, “I found my guitar pick in the fruit bowl, the one that I got from that little shop in Texas. I thought I lost it for good years ago but it just appeared out of nowhere.”
“Something strange is going on,” Virgil declared. “If stuff we lost is returning there has to be a reason for it.”
“Parallel universe,” I answered confidently.
“I don’t think that's a thing,” Scott said gently.
“Apports then?” I offered.
“No, I don’t think...what’s an apport?” Virgil asked.
“An object conjured out of nothing by a ghost, obviously.”
“I don’t think this is the work of a ghost, love," John said, squeezing my shoulder as he passed by to take a seat. “There’s only one person that borrows things without asking and that’s Gordon.”
“That was going to be my next guess,” I admitted.
“Yet you went straight for ghosts and different universes?” Scott asked, clearly bemused.
“Well, maybe, just for once, I wanted something interesting to happen around here that I could actually deal with,” I huffed. “Sue me.”
“Only you could think ghosts and different realms were something that’s easy to deal with when you were the one that screamed and climbed me like a monkey because a crab ran over your foot on the beach last night,” John laughed.
“Crabs have pincers, any sane person would get away from one of them,” I pouted, reaching for some toast off Virgil’s plate. Honestly I don’t know why we don't just have communal plates in this house, no one seems to eat their own food.
“So what are we going to do about Gordon being a kleptomaniac?” I asked.
“We’ll deal with him after breakfast,” Scott decided, leaning over and biting the corner off my toast. See? No boundaries whatsoever.
***
The klepto in question was sneaking suspiciously around the lounge when we tracked him down and we caught him in the act of leaving a magnifying glass behind a book on the bookcase.
“Busted,” Scott yelled, making Gordon jump about a foot in the air.
“So it was you that’s been leaving our belongings scattered around the house,” Virgil sighed.
“Why are you doing this?” John asked, although his tone said he was debating the wiseness of even posing the question and was unsure he actually wanted an answer.
“Can’t a guy do something nice for his family?”
“He can when he’s not the one thats been stealing things in the first place,” I shot back, arms folded, foot tapping.
“I’m offended!” Gordon gasped dramatically. “A Tracy doesn’t steal unless its Virgil and a bell takes his fancy-”
“That was one time and it was an accident!”
“I may borrow things,” Gordon continued.
“For three years?” Scott snorted.
“I borrow on extended loan-”
“Without permission,” John added.
“But you always get them back eventually,” Gordon finished triumphantly. “I got bored and cleaned my room and it was like unearthing buried treasure. I may have forgotten that I borrowed a few things but you’ve got them back now, so no harm no foul.”
“Is that all you needed to return?” Virgil sighed.
“There might be a few other things scattered around,” Gordon admitted.
“Go and get them,” Scott ordered.
Gordon staggered in half an hour later weighed down by a massive box overflowing with his plundered loot.
“Seriously?” Scott gaped as the box thumped down on the table.
“All of that?” Virgil couldn't believe his eyes.
“Not surprised,” John muttered.
“How did you manage to borrow all that?” Alan asked in awe, having been summoned from his pit to claim any lost items that may have fallen into Gordons possession. “I’m not even allowed to borrow a pen.”
“It’s because he doesn’t bother asking,” John told him.
“That’s where I’ve been going wrong!”
Gordon shooty finger winked at him.
“No!” I yelped, intervening for the first time and grabbing Alan, pulling him into my arms. “Do not corrupt this precious bean.”
“Too...late,” Alan wheezed, trying to escape my python like grasp.
“Oh, sorry,” I let go and Alan took a dramatically deep breath.
“What’s in the box, Squid?” Scott asked.
Gordon tipped the box up and out tumbled a mass of things that shocked even me.
“That’s my baseball cap,” Scott snagged it.
“My gloves,” Virgil claimed them.
“That’s my camera,” John snatched it up. “I thought I left that behind on the beach and the sea took it.”
“Well, technically the sea’s representative did,” I giggled, then noticed something in the middle of the pile. “Why do you have my headscarf? You know that I use that when you guys force me to get in a boat, it makes me feel fancy.”
“Are those my sunglasses?”
“Yes, I broke mine and was going fishing.”
“Is that my lipstick?”
“Yeah, I used it to draw blood on my neck so I could be a zombie at halloween.”
“There’s my ocarina.”
“It was so weird I had to try it.”
“Is that my belt?”
“Yeah, remember that date I went on with Penny? It went really well with those navy pants.”
“I thought I lost that harmonica.”
“I was going through a depressed week and wanted to play the blues.”
“Is that my cologne?”
“Same date.”
“Why do you have my toothbrush?”
“I used it to clean the sand out of one of Four’s filters.”
“My playing cards!”
“Yeah, I wanted to learn card tricks.”
“My travel chess set!”
“Four of the pawns are missing now, sorry.”
“Seriously, my drill?”
“I wanted to put up a picture.”
“Why did you need my tie?”
“That's classified.”
“That’s my favorite pen.”
“Yeah, I’ve got no excuse for that, I used it, put it in my pocket and forgot about it.”
“Gordon, why do you have my flip flops?”
“Mine broke and your’s were nearest.”
An endless stream of lost objects had suddenly returned home and it was a tad overwhelming but along with his more recent acquisitions were items that hadn’t been seen in forever.
“I remember this game!” Alan exclaimed, grabbing the box. “John and I used to play it all the time when I was little. You had to be astronauts and fly through the meteor showers and land on different planets and fight aliens. It was great. We had the best scores, no one could beat us.”
“Actually, I had the best scores,” John corrected him.
“No way, it was a team effort, we played that together every night after I got home from school.”
Virgil chuckled.
“What?” Alan looked confused. “Why are you laughing?”
“I may have taken the batteries out of your controller and just let you think you were playing.” John admitted.
“What! That was one of my greatest achievements in life!”
“Alan, you went into space when you were thirteen,” John pointed out.
“Oh yeah!”
Virgil spotted a book and picked it up. “I haven’t seen this since we were little.”
“Oh, I remember that one,” Scott smiled. “Mom had it when she was small and she used to read it to us every thanksgiving.”
John was busy sifting through the pile. “Hey, my first star globe, why do you have this?”
“Remember when I used to get upset when Dad went away? Well you used to point out all the different stars to me on it and where the moon was near them.”
“Oh yeah,” John smiled, “I remember that, I let you borrow it to keep beside your bed so you could see where Dad was every night.”
“That’s my old teddy bear,” Scott smiled, picking it up and sitting it on his lap. “I left him with you when I went to college.”
“I know, I told you that I was too old to have a plushie in my room but you insisted. I passed him on to Alan and when we moved I guess he got packed up with my things.”
“That’s the children’s guitar that Mom taught us to play,” Virgil picked it up and strummed a few cords but the tuning was terrible.
“I’ve never seen that before,” Alan said quietly. “In fact, I don’t remember much of any of this stuff.” He gestured to the pile of things that still remained scattered on the table top. “I don’t know that pencil sharpener, that snow globe or those shell bracelets, I don’t know any of it.”
“Neither do I,” I reminded him, wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
“I don’t have any memories of them so they don’t mean anything to me.”
“But that’s what’s so great about things and why I keep telling your brother that not everything has to have a use all the time. Things are there to remind us of the good times, just the sight of them can conjure up images, but they are also there to encourage us to share those memories. I used to love looking through my Nan and Grandad’s cupboards because I discovered so many things that were interesting,” I told him. “I’d ask them about them and they would tell me where they got them or who they belonged to before they got them and it was so nice to see the joy that the memories brought them. Pick something and ask about them, let’s share memories.”
Slowly Alan reached out to touch the small pile of shell bracelets.
“Where did these come from?”
“We were on a trip to the beach,” Scott started.
“Gordon was running all over picking up little shells and bringing them back to Mom,” Virgil continued.
“She ended up with a huge pile of them,” John laughed. “But Gordon didn't want her to put them back.”
“She ended up asking Dad to drill a tiny hole through each of them and she made them into bracelets for us as a reminder of the vacation,” Scott picked up the story.
“We wore them for a few days but Gordon kept stealing them because he loved the shells,” Virgil added.
“I remember that,” Gordon smiled. “There’s a picture in the album of me wearing them all, I don’t look any older than five.”
Alan picked them up, rubbing one of the shells between thumb and finger. “Why are there five of them?”
“Because Mom was pregnant with you at the time and said that you were there too so you should have a bracelet,” Scott smiled, reaching over to take one. “This was mine.”
One by one the others each claimed a bracelet, leaving Alan with just one.
“You’re right, that’s a nice story to hear,” he admitted, slipping the bracelet over his hand.
“Hey, here’s an idea,” I suggested. “This has been a mad few months, how about we start a new memory box and in ten years time we’ll look back in it and remember the longest vacation ever.”
“Yeah,” Alan nodded. “That could be cool.”
The box slowly filled up with bits and pieces.
Here are some of them.
-Some of our finished colouring pages.
-Gordon’s tablet that hadn’t recovered from its unscheduled dip in the bath.
-Brains’s broken glasses and a broken piece of his microscope that fell off of Alan when we played human buckaroo
-A small pile of post-it’s which Scott had used on April fools day to label everything in the lounge.
-The rubber spider John had pranked me with.
-A pair of the bunny ears the boys wore to deliver Easter eggs.
-The empty bottle of ‘Chill Pills’ Scott got for his birthday.
-A selection of our pictionary artwork.
-The beauty blender Virgil ruined on Gordon’s face.
-An empty popcorn bag Alan found stuffed between the couch cushions from one of our many movie nights.
-One of Scott’s socks that hadn’t been found before.
-A gaudy necklace from our lip sync battle
-A clue list from our scavenger hunt
-A shell I picked up on the beach the day they taught me to surf.
-The evil Furby
-The purple wig we made John wear (he was very glad to donate it to the memory box)
“OK, so, we don’t take anything out but we can add more for as long as isolation goes on?” Alan confirmed.
“Yep,” I nodded. “Who’s going to be in charge of keeping it safe?”
“Gordon should,” Alan said. “Since he seems to be the keeper of everyone’s things.”
“Even without permission,” John muttered, tucking his pen into his pocket in case it went walkies again.
“Actually,” Gordon said, “I think Alan should look after it for us.”
“Really? You mean that?” Alan grinned.
“Sure, kiddo,” Scott agreed. “After all, they’re your memories too

Happy Birthday, Izzy.

Beth wants to stay in bed just a few minutes longer. The sheets have accepted her as one of their own and are soft and warm tangled up around her. Drifting through stages of wakefulness, she’s surprised that Andy isn’t yelling and Baz doesn’t have the coffee started, that AJ and Jay aren’t making disgustingly cute faces at one another, and that her apartment isn’t as loud as it can possibly be. ...because she’s not, is she? In her apartment that is.  No. Hazy bits of memory drift selectively back into existence as she stretches languorously amidst the pillows. Billy had rescued her the night before from another birthday dinner at the Mansion with the Admiral. Strong hands, an unguarded bathroom window, a motorcycle waiting at idle. It was a bit of a challenge to ride behind him in the skirts she’d been wearing and how funny it had been when he tried to make harem pants out of it, fingers grazing the backs of her calves. He’d stolen her breath and broken her heart and she stood indignant as he skirted the jagged edges of her scar where the muscle had atrophied in the wake of the test bite.
He hadn’t flinched when she cupped her hand and pressed it to his cheek, not quite catching air like a slap but the subtlest reminder that she doesn’t really like being touched that way. The rest of the night was a blur: quinoa and black bean burgers instead of the heavy plates or red meat being served elsewhere, a drive along the bay, more than a couple glasses of sweet red wine. She doesn’t really remember all that much afterwards except that Billy was kind enough not only to see her to bed, but had curled up behind her at some point, keeping her safe with an arm around her waist.
But now he’s waking her with breakfast in bed, and the whisper of an adventure. He promises her they can go somewhere Tropical. Somewhere alone. Somewhere perfect. He says she can have her hummingbird cake for breakfast if she likes ~as long as she drinks her juice~ because that covers the four basic food groups: milk, eggs, flour, and fruit. There’s a bunch of questions over breakfast and the longer it lingers the more excited she gets, as evidenced by her ability to word deteriorating into pidgin so thick as to be near indecipherable. He encourages her to take a hot shower while he finishes a few details, and she doesn’t argue. When she gets out though, she finds two boxes. One with a gorgeous silky midnight blue dress that seems to have been custom made the way it flows over her modest curves and gives them perfect definition, flowing down to the tops of her feet but leaving her shoulders, arms, and back mostly bare. It fits perfectly. The second box contains the silver, tiny belled anklets in layered tiers that sparkle and make music as she puts them on and pads around for a couple seconds, feeling utterly feminine and delicate. The card explains that they’re going on an adventure, and she can’t wait. Scattered throughout the morning comes the other gifts. The twin whale sharks necklace that pairs nicely with the heart locket, polished to a mirror shine. She instantly recognises the longitude and latitude for what they are, except that they belong to somewhere in Hawai’i. He bestows on her a rare smile and cryptically asks “You ready?” Hesitantly she nods. He wraps one arm around her waist, the other hand holding their two bags. In a stunning display of vulgarity if only there’d been witnesses, the pristine modern blankness of his apartment gives way to sun and sand and sea. A little cottage made mostly of thatched palm branches. A stretch of beach to be shared with no one but the gulls and the turtles slipping into the waves. He holds her swaying body close, and she can feel the brush of his mind against hers as he smooths out the emotional urge to wretch from the transition. Borrowing a bit of his own magick, she realises this is where the necklace leads to... a tiny strip of island, no larger than a big atoll, completely uninhabited. Completely theirs. She can feel the wards all around them; they cannot be spied on via scrying rituals, not found by spirits or life-tracking. It’s as private as it can get. “Hope you like it. It's ours for as long as you want, Izzy." he says, dropping the bags so he can rest his hand on the curve of her hip. “Be selfish a’ me t’ say... mau loa?” She knows that’s not possible, but they can negotiate. Silk and skin slither against him as she lifts her arms to wind them around his neck, dragging him down to brush the tip of her nose against his, bestowing a soft kiss afterwards. “Dis gonna be perfect. Mebbe already is. Mahalo ā nui, e kuʻu kaikunāne.”
