This mural by Shark Toof was created for the 2015 edition of the SHINE Mural Festival in St. Pete, Florida.
About the mural from the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance website–
The artist hails from Los Angeles and is known around the world for his iconic shark illustrations. Although the shark’s reputation is fearsome, Shark Toof uses the image of a shark to give strength, optimism and possibility to the viewer. He sees the shark as a voice of rebellion, and a conduit for the unheard.
At the artist’s request, the wall was painted red before he got to St. Pete. Even so, the mural took four days and almost one hundred cans of aerosol paint – and it was a challenge because of wires and the architectural details of the wall.
When the painting was done, the artist stepped into the doorway on the bottom right, closed the iron grate and said, “See? Now I’m in a shark cage!”

In 1987, the Kien family stood on a red dirt road in a refugee camp called Site 2 somewhere along the border of Cambodia and Thailand. With their loved ones scattered, their home displaced, and their country suffused in violence, they place their hopes on a vague future. Absurd events become strangely, sadly common. Fate, or luck, or kindness brings them safe passage across the sea to Boston, MA; Montréal, QC; and finally, Bradenton, FL, a few minutes away from where this wall stands.
The youngest of the four depicted is our friend Anhdi. Today, he lives in Bradenton with his wife and three kids, who we invited to help paint and add to their family’s story directly. It’s a story with many secret turns and memories that shape their specific experience, but it’s also one that’s universal to so many who have had to flee their homes amidst conflict in the search of a new beginning. It’s a story of survival and the human spirit, and we feel so lucky to have been able to try and express it.

“When the sun is up, the moon is absent!” was created in collaboration by Bryan Beyung and James Lee Chiahan in part of the 9th edition of the Shine mural festival in St. Petersburg, Florida. Made possible only with the support of David and Liliana of Artillery Residency, Jenee and the team at SHINE Mural Festival, Void Projects, and of course, the Kien family. We give our deepest thanks for the gift of an unforgettable experience, and our love to the people of St. Pete for your warm welcomes and kind words. Thank you!

"THE COMMUTER"
by Nicole Salgar
"This is a representation of the pathways we follow through transitions and transformations throughout our lives." Influenced by her Latin roots and passion for horror, sci-fi, and folk art, Miami-based Nicole Salgar says this piece is a portrayal of a gatekeeper to other dimensions and realities. "Ultimately" she says, "this mural is a culmination of the feminine spirit of all things being tied together through reality, nature, dreams, space, and time. A boundless energy which makes up the entire universe.“ Salgar says much of her work does not allow her artistic freedom, but appreciated that this 2021 work for the Shine Festival in St Pete gave her that complete license.

Happy Birthday to ex Pop Singer turned TV personality Michelle McManus.
Born in the Queen Mother's Maternity Hospital in Glasgow, on May 8th 1980, Michelle was brought up in Baillieston with her four wee sisters, she auditioned for Pop Idol in 2003 and brought criticism from judge Pete Waterman due to her image and he "fuller figure", fellow judge Simon Cowell to a shine to Michelle and championed her cause, she beat Mark Rhodes in the final with 58 percent of the vote. After signing to Sony BMG, her debut single, All This Time, spent three weeks at number one, while her first album, The meaning of love reached number three. However, after her second single, the title track "The Meaning of Love," stalled at number 16, she was dropped by her label, and a year later she parted company with management company 19 Entertainment. I can't believe this year will mark 20 years since her win!
In 2007, she set up her own record label, McManii Records, and released the track Just for You. Michelle has since released a book entitled You Are What You Eat, performed in a production of The Vagina Monologues, and co-hosted the Scottish TV show The Hour. Michelle has also appeared on The Edinburgh Festival Fringe as well as working on numerous Scottish TV shows and guesting as a DJ.
McManus paid tribute and sang two songs at Martyn Hett's funeral on 30 June 2017. Martyn was one of the 22 victims of the Manchester Bombing on 22 May 2017.
Michelle recorded a cover version of Paul MccArtney's, We all Stand Together in aid of a collection of a dozen charity choirs. McManus married Jeff Nimmo on 23 rd September 2017.
The couple tied the knot at St Mary and St Finnan Church at Glenfinnan on the edge of Loch Shiel. in September 2017, they now have to bairns.

WEEKEND ARTINGS: Arts and culture experiences to enjoy with family Thanksgiving weekend
Thanksgiving weekend is fast approaching. Maybe you already know where you’re taking your out-of-town family members, or maybe you don’t. For those still deciding, here are some of the best last-minute arts and culture experiences you can share with family in Tampa Bay this weekend.
1. Sanding Ovations encore in Treasure Island. When are your aunt and uncle from Alaska ever going to see professionally-sculpted sand if you don’t take them to Sanding Ovations encore on Treasure Island this weekend? Here’s a preview from 10 Tampa Bay.
2. “The Nature of Art” at The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete. There’s a lot to see at the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete, especially if you’ve never been there before. If you have been before, this weekend’s a great time to revisit, as the MFA opened “The Nature of Art,” their first campus-wide exhibition, on Oct. 28. I have many things to say about how you should experience “The Nature of Art,” but you’ll have to wait for my Creative Loafing review for those extra words. In the meantime, check out this video snapshot from ABC Action News.
3. “From Far East to Far West” at The James Museum in St. Pete. Given from Far East to Far West’s focus on ancestry, it’s a great show to visit with family. Maybe you’ll learn some of your family’s history in the process. Here’s what I wrote about the exhibit for Creative Loafing.
4. Florida Stories Walking Tours. Celebrate local stories with a “Florida Stories” walking tour of St. Petersburg, Ybor City, Tarpon Springs, or Safety Harbor. The Florida Humanities Council hired local writers to help with the scripts for their self-guided walking tours, accessed through the Florida Humanities Council’s Florida Stories app.
5. St. Pete Mural Tours. There are still some spots left in Florida CraftArt’s original walking mural tour this Saturday.
And if that fills up, you can always download a map directly from the SHINE website and do your own driving tour.
6. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium promises a “Sea of Holiday Joy” and art this weekend. Get there early Friday morning, 8-10 a.m., and you might catch Santa diving with the dolphins. In addition to the usual marine attractions, CMA offers holiday crafts and activities for kids during “Sea of Holiday Joy” weekends. And thanks to a collaboration with the Morean Arts Center, Level 4 of the CMA Visitor Center hosts a collection of marine-inspired artwork for the next several months.
7. Fairgrounds St. Pete has extended hours this weekend. They’ll be open until 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night. That gives you plenty of time to immerse your out-of-town family members in Florida culture via locally-made art. Locals should know that the Fairgrounds holiday experience, Scents of the Season, doesn’t open until Nov. 30. If you still don’t know what Fairgrounds is, I’m going to refer you to my 2021 Creative Loafing feature where I interviewed the founders before Fairgrounds opened to the public.
8. Impressionism on both sides of the bay. People don’t always agree on art, but everyone loves impressionism. And that’s why “Frontiers of Impressionism” at the Tampa Museum of Art and “Dali and the Impressionists” at The Dali belong on this list of things to do with your family this weekend.
9. Brew culture. We brew a lot of beer in Tampa Bay, and it’s more than good enough to introduce your relatives to. From citrus-forward IPAs to tropical lagers and Florida Weisse styles, Tampa Bay has its own unique beer culture. I like to pick up a few six packs from Crooked Thumb in Safety Harbor before family visits from out of town so they can sip on local flavors during their stay. I have yet to try their beer, but Grindhaus Brew Lab hosts a Holiday Maker's Market with Author Josh Ginsberg this Sunday in Clearwater.
Find a brewery near you using Visit Tampa Bay's Tampa Bay Brewery Map.

The 'Azzaro' family name is defined as "A Metonymic Occupational Name For Maker Or Supplier Of Steel Or Swords From A Dialect Variant Of Acciaio ‘Steel’."
Further, Urban Dictionary gives insight into pop culture's spin, listing Azzaro as "the guy that will make your heart stop, make your eyes shine, shower you with kisses and always stand up for you. Never let this guy go. Ever."
I've never been one for pegging labels and categorization. However, if you're looking for a solid piece of steel to stand strong in your arsenal or a seductive and daring blend of vibrant and masculine notes to wrap you in a sheath of memories with it's warm tones, to take you fully and without hesitation in an embrace you never want to end – Then I say the definition fits perfectly for the latest fragrance by Azzaro: The Most Wanted.
The Most Wanted is a successful sequel to the previous - Wanted - a fragrance which on its own left a long and lingering allure with its crisp, curious scent.
But from crisp to cautionary, from delight to daring, dark and dangerous. Most Wanted no doubt evokes a richer, bolder aroma that paints a picture of both seduction and the preluding danger in the dance of a faceless and animalistic dalliance with the unknown.
Just like the pulse pounding craving for adventure and delight in a most intense midnight tryst, Most Wanted delivers on all levels and yet with its sultry, palatable indulgence it elevates the seduction itself to willfully leave you with just one thing - wanting more!
Seductive. Daring. Charismatic. A powerful fusion of vibrant cardamon, addictive toffee accord and the masculine trail of amber wood.
This powerful blend will take you on a journey you never want to end. The aromatic fragrance will last much longer than the fantasy it evokes. A perfect parfum for longer wear. Its sharp notes are the steel to stab the competition in a flirtful flaunt during your pitch in the afternoon business meeting or while providing the luxurious and lingering profile to captivate and call out to this night's prey with the setting of the sun.
Azzaro writes on its box, "Life is a celebration! Step into the light and enjoy the moment. It's your time to shine!"
While I agree with the cadence and emotion behind the simplistic branding. And do likewise agree that this fragrance works as a nice balance for day or nighttime wear, I believe it to be the darker tale that wins the prize and puts this parfum at the perfect place for an essential nighttime must-have.
It speaks volumes in every soulful sniff and is very hard to define in one role or another. It's a complex fragrance that is bold in body yet leaves all the rest open for interpretation in the hands of the man daring to wear it.
It's exciting! It's sexy. It's smooth yet spicy. It's everything that's needed and a little extra to tease the senses. I am proud to say that Azzaro The Most Wanted is now my Personal Favorite and it will be a very interesting and very bloody battle amongst the brands to produce something even more elevated than this, my new best friend.
Azzaro definitely hit a home run with and it truly lives up to the name… THE MOST WANTED.

I wish you would write a fic... about the Superfamily 💖
“I want a baby.”
Steve looks up at his husband. “Tony, what the fuck?”
“A-a baby. A kid. A child.” Tony sits next to him on the couch. His eyes are shining with excitement.
“We can’t get pregnant,” Steve points out, turning back to the book in his hands. Tony grabs it and throws it on the coffee table. “Hey!”
“There are other- other options,” Tony says, grasping Steve’s hand tightly and staring into his baby blue eyes nervously. “Adoption. We could adopt.”
The supersoldier sighs, shaking his head. “Tones, we can’t take care of a baby. How about a dog? Or a cat, cats are always-”
“Steve, please,” Tony whispers, eyes suddenly filled with tears. Steve frowns and cups his husband’s cheeks. “I want a baby. Can you just- just please, think about it. Please.”
Steve is so shocked, by Tony’s tears, by the desperate tone in his voice, by the eagerness on every inch of his face, that he nods. “I will,” he promises.
The love, the relief, and the excitement in Tony’s eyes make it all worth it.
~~~~~
At first, Steve thinks Tony has forgotten about the whole baby thing.
He should have known better.
Two weeks later, Tony barges into the training room, breathing heavily, eyes wild.
“Tony, what the hell? What happened?” He hurries towards his husband. In lieu of greeting, Tony shoves a Starkpad into his hands.
“I found him,” he says breathlessly.
“Who?” Steve asks, still eyeing the other man worriedly. He still hasn’t looked at the Starkpad. Tony gestures to it in frustration.
“Our baby.”
Steve freezes. He looks at the pad.
It’s a series of emails from one Mary Parker. Apparently, she and her husband recently split up and she is no longer able to provide for her newborn son.
“Tony, honey…” he says slowly, apologetically. “I don’t know if we can take care of a baby.”
Something in Tony’s face breaks. “Right,” he whispers, more to himself than Steve. “Right, what-what was I thinking? We- I can’t be a father.” Steve opens his mouth, to apologize, to take it back, to do anything, but Tony turns before he can and walks back to the elevator.
Steve blinks back the tears in his eyes. He’s broken something inside of Tony, and he doesn’t know how to fix it. Doesn’t know if he can, really.
He looks back at the Starkpad, re-reading the emails, filled with so much enthusiasm. We would love to adopt Peter! Can we meet him soon? and He’s perfect. He’s perfect for us. My husband and I can’t wait to meet him!
What have I done? Steve thinks.
He scrolls down, and finds a picture of a tiny- literally tiny, the kid could easily fit in his palm- baby, swaddled in a pink blanket with a soft hat on his head. He’s covered in wires and tubes, but even Steve has to admit it- he looks perfect.
~~~~~
Tony won’t talk to him. It’s fair, but it hurts all the same. When they get ready for bed, Tony opens his mouth for the first time in hours and informs him that he’s sleeping on the couch.
Steve knows he deserves it.
The next morning, JARVIS tells him that Tony is in the lab and should not be disturbed. Is it Steve’s imagination, or does the AI sound colder than usual?
They can’t take care of a baby, though. Raising a tiny human for 18+ years? They just can’t do that.
Right?
He pulls up the picture of the baby- no, Peter.
What harm is there in meeting him? he thinks.
Tony ignores the knocking (pounding) on the lab's reflective glass walls until Steve finally shouts “I wanna meet Peter!”
The door slides open. “Really?” Tony says, disbelief clear in his voice.
“Yeah,” Steve says. “Yeah, I really do.”
Tony stares at him, then bursts into tears, sinking into his chest weakly. Steve does his best to soothe him before realizing that these are happy tears, relieved ones, and that Tony couldn’t stop crying even if he tried.
“Did you sleep at all last night?” he asks his husband gently. Tony laughs, shakes his head. “Tony.”
“I know, I know. I just couldn’t.”
Steve frowns sadly. “I’m sorry, Tony.”
The billionaire just shrugs. “Maybe you were right.”
“I wasn’t,” Steve says firmly, waiting until their eyes meet. “You’re gonna be a great father. We can do it.”
Tony stares back at him, and Steve realizes suddenly how terrified his spouse is. “We can do it,” he says again.
“We can do it,” Tony echoes, and maybe, just for a second, he believes him.
~~~~~
From the instant they lay eyes on Peter, they’re both hooked. He’s even tinier in person, with rosy cheeks, thin brown curls, beautiful big doe eyes, with ten tiny little fingers and ten tiny little toes.
He has a breathing tube, which nearly sends Tony into a panic attack until Mary explains that it’s only there for a few more days, just in case. Now Tony is terrified that Peter will get sick and won’t be able to breathe, but Mary assures him that he’s been stable for a few days now and should be fine.
Tony marvels at the fact that this tiny human is only five days old. Only five days in the world, and already so much has happened. “He’s beautiful,” he whispers, gazing down into the incubator. Steve squeezes his shoulder.
Mary smiles. “You can hold him, if you want,” she says.
“Really?!” Tony gasps, suddenly filled with excitement and terror. “Is-is it safe?”
“Wouldn't lie to you, would I?” the woman laughs, and plucks Peter out of the incubator. “Here ya go.”
Tony’s hands are shaking as he accepts the baby, cradling the tiny body to his chest gingerly, horrified he might somehow hurt this precious child. “You got it,” Mary says.
Tony looks at Peer- really looks at him, taking in the pale freckles on the bridge on his nose, his cupid’s bow lips, his dainty little eyelashes and his adorable chocolate eyes. “Hey,” he murmurs, voice cracking. “Hi, Peter. Hiya, Pete. I-I’m your dad, baby. I’m Dad.” Tears are streaming down his face, and he sniffs loudly. Peter blinks a little and makes a curious cooing noise. “Sorry, honey. So sorry.” He’s starting to sob now, but he doesn’t want to let his baby go. Steve wraps an arm around his shoulders and grasps Peter’s hand between the pad of his thumb and his pointer finger.
“Hey Peter,” he says. He’s not great with emotions, especially with a stranger around, even though Mary seems like a wonderful woman. “Nice to meetcha, kiddo. I’m, um- I’m your other dad. I’m your Papa.” He’s crying now too. They’re both wondering how they ever could have lived before this sweet child came into their lives, and it’s barely been five minutes.
Tony laughs, sobs, and laughs again. “He’s perfect,” he says to Mary, who has been staring at a painting across the hall politely.
She grins. “Glad to hear it. I’d hate for this little guy to go into foster care. You two seem like you’re gonna be great dads.”
The rest of the hour feels like a blur for the two new parents, the only thing solid each other and their baby boy. They sign adoption papers numbly, Tony still cradling the baby in his arms. They get a quick instruction on how to change diapers, prepare bottles, deal with fevers, earaches, and teething, and then they’re in the car with Happy, Peter strapped into a carseat, finally going home.
They haven’t had time to set up a nursery, really, they haven’t had time for anything. Happy buys them a bassinet, a mobile, and a shit ton of baby food and baby formula.
They sit on the couch together, Peter once again in Tony’s arms, fast asleep. There are going to be a lot of hurdles ahead, a lot of crying, a lot of worrying, but above all, a lot of love.
“I love you so much, Peter,” Tony whispers.
“I love you too, Peter,” Steve whispers.
With Great Power...
Chapter Three: With great power comes a great inability to sleep
Ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/30579050/chapters/75545900
TW: panic attacks
------
As requested by Peter, Tony parks two blocks away from the school lot.
He idles his car and waits for the kid to appear with a careful eye in the rearview mirror. It’s just shy of five o’clock. Peter should be out of decathlon by now. His fingers itch to reach for his phone, to send the kid a flurry of texts until he materializes and puts him out of his low patience torture.
But with a righteous amount of self-control, he refrains. After what seems like decades Peter appears at the passenger door. He raps his knuckles against the window before slipping inside. Tony smiles at this, a warm fondness growing in his chest.
“Did you just knock on my car?”
Peter freezes in the middle of securing his seatbelt. “Uh, yeah? It’s polite.”
“Last week you and Thor had a competition to see who could down a two liter of Diet Coke the fastest.”
Lips quirking, Peter shrugs. “Your point?”
“That wasn’t very polite.”
“I won, didn’t I?”
“You sure did kiddo.”
Peter finishes buckling his seatbelt and shoves his heavy backpack down between his legs. The setting sun shines through the windshield into his eyes and Peter winces against it, reaching up to shield them. His hand shakes in the air and Tony’s eyes narrow in suspicion. “You alright kid?”
“Hm? Oh, yeah Mr. Stark. Totally. Long day is all.”
Unconvinced, Tony peels out onto the road. “Yeah? And why’s that?”
Sighing dramatically, Peter settles further into his seat. “I patrolled before school. Stopped a mugging. That was cool I guess. Then I took a couple exams. Decathlon, obviously. Oh, and I totally failed the beep test in gym-”
Tony raises a brow. “You failed the beep test?”
“On purpose!”
“Why the hell would you fail a test on purpose?”
“Because Peter Parker isn’t exactly a track star, Mr. Stark.”
God, this kid. Tony hopes the admiration doesn’t show on his face. “I see.”
“Anyways,” Peter plows on, caught in a yawn. “How was your day?”
“Oh, you know. The usual.”
“That’s a terrible answer.”
“Well it’s the one you’re getting.”
Peter scoffs. His eyes droop against the gentle rumble of the car. “You’re just as bad as Happy.”
“I’m telling him you said that.”
Peter only smiles in response, eyes closing all the way. Tony lets the silence sit. He’s read enough of Karen’s reports to know that the kid hasn’t been sleeping well.
And good god can he relate.
They only make it through three Black Sabbath songs before Peter’s head dips down towards his chest. The momentum must shock him back into the waking world because he gasps, flailing out and landing one hand on Tony's arm and the other on the window. Immediately flushing, Peter yanks his limbs back into his chest. “Sorry,” he murmurs.
“You can sleep. It’s okay kiddo.”
“No,” Peter says all too quickly. A chord of worry strikes in Tony’s chest. “I mean, I shouldn’t. It wouldn’t be polite.”
“Pete, if you say that word one more time I swear I’ll set DUM-E on you.”
“Polite, polite, polite, polite-”
Something floods in Tony’s chest. It feels as if he’s being warmed from the inside out and for a moment, his concern for Peter’s health takes a place on his mind’s backburner. He cracks a smile. “Be sure to remember this moment Pete. You asked for it.”
-----
“Dr. Banner!” Peter drops his backpack heavily on the ground, skipping and stumbling into the lab and towards the man in question. Bruce is sitting in front of a laptop, the buttons on his shirt secured incorrectly and glasses sitting crooked on his nose. He smiles widely when he sees them. “Hey Peter. Tony said to expect you. How’ve you been?”
“Oh you know,” Peter says, giving Tony a pointed look, “the usual.”
Tony snorts as Peter pulls up a chair beside Bruce, propping his chin up on his hands and staring intently at the screen. After a few seconds his eyes light up. “No way! Is this skin-cell regeneration technology?”
Looking surprised, Bruce nods. “How did you-”
“He’s a smart cookie,” Tony interjects, walking up behind them and ruffling Peter’s hair. Peter swats him away, though he’s smiling.
“Is this what you and Mr. Stark are presenting tomorrow? At the conference?”
“Yep. Though procrastination hasn’t really done us any favours-”
“I’ll help!” Peter blurts.
Bruce looks to Tony like he’s a parent to grant permission. Trying to ignore the implications behind it, Tony concedes with a grin. “Oh what the hell. Where do we start?”
“Yes!”
----
The hours blur and melt together. So engrossed in their project, Tony doesn’t really notice Peter losing steam until he’s gripping the counter so tightly Tony knows it can only be to keep himself steady. Only now does he see the deep rings of purple under the kid’s eyes.
The nagging in the back of his mind pulls harder but he lets it go. Peter is running Bruce through a genius theory on how to approach increased somatic cell growth that he would be an idiot to interrupt. Not for the first time, watching Peter work is like looking at a mirror image of his younger self, fresh-faced and enthusiastic at MIT. It’s enough to distract him, a small smile morphing his exhaustion into something softer.
Piggybacking off Peter’s ideas, Bruce proposes his own theory concerning the role of red blood cells and Tony loses track of time in his own contributions. The next time he comes back to himself it’s nearly two in the morning.
And Peter looks dead on his feet.
Bruce must notice when Tony does because he closes the laptop, though with some reluctance. “Well then. There’s history. Or, the start of it at least.”
Laughing softly, Peter rubs at his eyes. He sways and Tony resists the urge to grab him. Bruce stands and squeezes Tony’s shoulder. “He’s a good kid,” he says quietly, privately. Then, louder, “see you both tomorrow.”
And he leaves.
For a moment him and Peter simply stand in silence, relishing in the exhausted high of their scientific breakthrough. Then Peter yawns and it snaps Tony into action. He uses one hand to grab Peter’s elbow and the other to collect his backpack from the floor. They walk in silence from the lab to the elevator and miraculously make it to the outside of Peter’s door.
“Thanks Mr. Stark,” Peter says softly, his words slurred on their edges. He takes his backpack and sinks a few inches into the ground at the weight of it.
“Straight to bed, capiche?”
“Mm. Yep.”
“Goodnight, kid.”
“G’night.”
Tony should’ve known it was too good to be true.
-----
Pepper’s out of town. His bed is big and empty and cold.
He can’t sleep.
He thinks of Peter.
“Hey FRI? Is the kid asleep yet?”
“It appears Mr. Parker is doing calculus homework.”
“Of course he is.”
Tony sighs long and deep. It carries out into the empty room and dies. It’s nearly three in the morning now. He debates getting up and telling Peter off for his wakefulness, but deep down he understands it’s not really his place.
“FRI, let me know when he falls asleep.”
“Of course.”
Tony waits and waits. The alert never comes.
Finally, his eyes droop.
It doesn’t last long.
FRIDAY’s voice jars him back into wakefulness. “Boss, it appears Mr. Parker has fallen asleep.”
“Mm. Good.”
“It also appears that Mr. Parker’s heart rate has risen significantly along with his breathing. He seems to be in distress.”
Damn it.
“Boss-”
“On it, FRI.”
Head rushing from standing too fast, Tony just barely manages to catch himself against the wall as he stumbles out into the hall. Even in the dark he knows the route by heart. One door, two doors, three doors-
“Pete?” Tony stops and hits his palm against the entrance. He’s reminded of Peter knocking on the window after decathlon and his heart seems to twist. When there’s no response, he cracks open the door.
“Peter?”
He expects to find the kid in bed. Instead, Peter is slouched over his desk, his tense face pressed into the pages of a heavy textbook. He’s whining and twitching in his sleep, a look too similar to physical pain for Tony to be comfortable stealing his expression.
He’s at Peter’s side in seconds. However, once there, his own heart rate seems to accelerate. “Uh FRI?” he whispers. “Any tips?”
“Start by waking Mr. Parker up.”
“Right, right. Good plan.” Hesitantly, Tony digs his fingers into Peter’s shoulder. When he doesn’t stir, he opts to shake it instead. “Pete? Hey. You with me buddy?”
“Please. St-stop-”
“Peter!”
“Stop. Stop-”
In a flash of worry, Tony shakes Peter harder. FRIDAY’s warning voice fills the room but it’s too late. Peter wakes up with an earth-shattering gasp, flying back in his chair. It would’ve been funny under different circumstances. But it’s not, because Peter is too pale and covered in a cold sweat. His young eyes are wide and terrified, a weak hand reaching up to wrap around his throat.
Then Tony understands.
“Breathe,” he instructs. “Peter, can you hear me? Look at me. Breathe.”
Peter makes a horrible strangled noise in the back of his throat, his eyes trying and failing to lock on Tony as his chest works overtime to pull in nothing. Tony grabs the boy’s hand away from his throat and places it over his own heart. He uses his other to direct Peter’s face more intently on his own. “You can do this Pete. You’re having a panic attack. I know it’s scary, but you have to focus on getting in some air, okay? I know you can do it.”
Peter tries.
“Listen to my breathing. Try and follow it.” He takes in an exaggerated breath and feels tears bite at his eyes when Peter manages to copy the behaviour. “Good. That’s really good Pete. Keep listening.”
“‘M-m-”
“Don’t try and talk. Focus on breathing. I’m right here.” I’m not going anywhere.
Peter squeezes his eyes shut. It’s the longest ten minutes of Tony’s life, but eventually Peter’s breaths even out. Exhausted, he slumps forward into Tony’s shoulder, shaking horribly. “O’side.”
“What was that kiddo?”
“Out-outside.” Weakly, Peter tries to push himself up. His unfocused eyes land on Tony desperately as he continues his struggle. “Gotta- gotta go outside. P-please.”
With a sinking feeling in his stomach, Tony nods. He helps Peter stand, grabs a blanket from off the kid’s bed, and with combined effort they make their way out into the hall. Tony keeps his hands planted firmly on Peter’s shoulders to keep him steady.
As soon as the fresh air hits Peter visibly relaxes. It must not do wonders for his balance because he lists heavily to the side and Tony is too caught off guard to fully catch him. They end up in a tangled heap on stairs. Peter inhales deeply through his nose and exhales out of his mouth, holding his breath in a careful pattern. “Thanks,” he murmurs eventually. “Better now.”
Feeling threateningly close to tears, Tony drapes the blanket he had grabbed carefully around Peter’s shoulder, fussing with it until it’s secure. “Wanna talk about it?” he asks softly.
Looking weighed down, Peter shrugs. He looks up at the night sky, at the stars, and turns up his lips in a sad smile. “I still dream about it sometimes.”
“About what?”
“Mm. The warehouse. Being stuck.”
Tony frowns, his insides turning to ice. Peter’s face is relaxed now, but in the dim light Tony can still make out the underlying exhaustion. The stress and the fear. God, he’s just a kid.
“Is that why you haven’t been sleeping?”
“I know it’s dumb. But I wake up and I can’t breathe and-” Peter frowns. “It’s just not worth it.”
“It isn’t dumb kiddo.”
“I’m just- I’m so tired, Mr. Stark. You know?”
Overcoming the paralysis in his limbs, Tony scoots closer to Peter and pulls him up against his chest. When Peter leans into the gesture he runs his hand through the kid’s hair. “I know Pete. I’m sorry. This never should’ve been you. I hate that it’s you.”
Peter sighs. The usual glint in his eyes is gone. “Occupational hazard, right?”
It isn’t fair, but it’s true. Tony wishes he could fix it. He’ll work his whole damn life trying. “Yeah kiddo. I guess it is.”
Tony shivers. Peter notices and shakes his head. “Sorry, sorry. We can go back inside. I’m okay now. I promise.”
“Pete-”
“No really.”
When Peter stands without toppling over, Tony caves and stands too. For a moment they stand still. It’s safe, quiet. Crickets and frogs can be heard from across the dewy lawn. “Mr. Stark?”
“Yeah kid?”
“How- how do I make it stop? The nightmares, I mean.”
It feels like a sucker punch to the gut.
“You can’t stop fear,” Tony says, and it takes a lot of effort to keep his voice even. He thinks of Afghanistan and the Battle of New York, of finding Peter collapsed on the Cyclone after bringing his plane out of the sky. “Every single person on this damn earth is scared of something Pete. It’s part of being human.”
Peter nods, then smiles weakly. “Well technically Mr. Stark, I’m a superhuman.”
“True, but that still doesn’t make you exempt.”
“I know.”
Tony is quiet. The world is quiet. “Talking about it helps too,” Tony says finally. “There are lots of people who want to help Pete. You just- you just have to let them. You have to let us take some of the responsibility too.”
Peter looks at his feet. He rubs a tired hand over his eyes.
“Come on kiddo. You good to go inside now?”
After a slight nod, they walk back into the warmth of the compound. Peter lingers before closing the door and Tony stares at his small shadowed frame. He swallows down a rush of emotion and clears his throat. “How do you feel about a movie?”
Again, Peter seems to relax. Only then does he close the door. “Only if it’s Back to the Future.”
“I’d accept nothing else.”
Peter smiles. For the first time that night, it’s genuine. They sit side by side on the couch and even before the opening credits finish Peter is snoring softly into his ribs. Tony relaxes against the kid’s even breathing. He takes some of Peter’s burden and shoulders it gladly.
He’ll take as much as Peter will give him.
