Of all the people that could’ve walked into The Other Realm Comics shop, Sara was the last one she expected—and the one she most loathed.
No, not people. Not a person. Demon. Carla had to remember to correct herself on that because Sara was… very different. Carla knew demons—she worked for one, after all—but Dylan was a different sort. He was able to act remotely human, showing some sort of capacity for emotion and even seemingly enjoying the time he spent among humans in their world. Sara, on the other hand…
She could see the hate the second she entered the shop via the backroom. Her nose went up in the air and her dark eyes stared down at everything, but especially at Carla.
“Oh. You’re here,” she said with clear disdain, exhaling an exaggerated sigh.
If it was anyone else, Carla would not have hesitated to answer with her usual snark. Knowing Sara would kill her in two seconds flat, with just a swipe of those sharp—but finely manicured—nails, she thought it best to have some respect along with her fear. Sara certainly wasn’t Dylan and wouldn’t react at all in the same jovial way.
“Yes. I am,” she stated, working to keep her voice completely flat, even. “I work here.” As if that wasn’t clear from her position behind the register, the stupid name-tag.
The demon’s eyes swept the room. “Hmm.”
Carla took in a deep breath, biting her tongue to hold back a nasty comment. “Is there something I can help you with?” She put on her best customer service smile, the tightness of the feigned friendliness straining her cheeks.
“You? Help me?” She gave a sharp laugh and strode forward, past Carla and the counter and toward the shelves of comics and graphic novels. “I doubt it. I don’t need the help of a human.” She spat the word out, as if Carla were a roach or a bug or some disgusting thing that shouldn’t exist.
That just about did it. She very nearly threw back her own harsh words, but managed to hold back. She searched her mind for something to say, some counter that wouldn’t further incur her wrath or ire or piss her off any more. The only thing she could think of was another question. “What are you doing here?”
For a few moments, Sara’s gaze continued to look over the bright covers of the comics on display, before she turned to her. “Obviously, I’ve come for him. Dylan. He was not upstairs, I thought he might be here, but I was clearly wrong.” Her upper lip drew back in a sneer. She stood a little taller, her lithe form having all the grace of a black cat ready to pounce. “I’ve decided to wait for him. Leave.”
There was no question in that. No request. It was a demand. Ugh. Demons.
Unable to hold back any more, Carla scoffed. “Uh, no. I’m not leaving. I’m working my shift and I have a right to be here—”
“Go or I’ll slice that thick neck of yours.” Her lips pulled into a tight, humorless smile. “I don’t offer a choice often but because he likes you, for some reason, I’m willing to play… nice.” A pause. “Do we have a deal?”
Well, Carla wasn’t gonna argue with that. She could just think of this as… paid time off. A much needed day to herself. She didn’t even need to think about it. It was leave or die and she was not fucking dying today in this damned comic shop.
“Just let me grab my purse.”

Come Closer by Sara Gran
The battle was all mine, and I was quickly, obviously, losing.
Sara Gran's Come Closer is a brisk psychological-horror story that's as successfully disorienting as it is exceedingly disturbing. The way Gran weaponizes the first-person - nearly stream-of-conscious - storytelling to build discomfort and fear as Amanda becomes less and less herself is immensely effective in both its execution and thematic heft. And while it's not nearly as traditionally terrifying as I'd hoped, Gran's prose handles the loss of control and sense of hopelessness throughout Amanda's dissociation so tactfully that it builds to a shockingly vicious, truly harrowing finale.
How as this not been adapted into a film, yet?!?
8.5/10

Humans leave their teeth in a cup of water sometimes. I have seen it on television. Officer, imagine taking out your heart that way. You shove it into a glass. The slick muscle pulses. Dust settles throughout the day. You return. Your heart is bloated and gray. Flat where it forced itself against the glass. Cold in your hands. Smaller than you remember. You swallow it. It falls into place. It beats. It beats. But nothing is the same. The next morning, you do everything again.
That is motherhood.

New Horror 2023 - Day 15
Tumblr media
"The family curse that condemned them to be eternal renters."
"Señor Ligotti" by Bernardo Esquinca (2020)
Real estate horror is some prime and extremely relevant storytelling (also see Dream Home). This one hits in a certain way that ya gotta have the experience to understand.

"Ahhh! Why did you tell me that?"
"The Fisherman" by Franco, Tressina Bowling, Wes Abbott, Sara Richard (2022)
Oh man, this is fun but too short! I need a part 2.

"You can buy these, but it's on your head."
Piggy dir. Carlota Pereda (2022)
I loved this. It's unsettling and choices are made that leave you questioning just where the story's going to go, and it's always nice to find something that twists and turns that way. Beyond that, it just lands for anyone who was glad to get the fuck away from childhood horrors.

“What do we have today?”
Seungcheol looked up from the tablet as his coworker, Sunghoon, walked over, removing his jacket and setting it on the stand. “I thought we had an event today,” Sunghoon admitted, looking at the screen of the tablet over Seungcheol’s shoulder.
Seungcheol shook his head. “No, that’s not until the twenty-sixth,” he answered, returning his attention to the screen.
Today he was in charge of the entrance of the club, overseeing the entry of all patrons.
It was the twenty-third of December and only two days until Christmas.
The club would be closed Christmas Day but it would be open normal hours on Christmas Eve which Seungcheol didn’t mind. He wasn’t one to celebrate the holiday. Sure he went to Daegu to see his family but usually he worked the day after so he wasn’t able to stay for very long.
As the head of security, it was his job to ensure all bouncers were properly trained and that operations ran smoothly. As long as he did his job, the bar would make money, the bartenders could serve the patrons and the patrons had a good time.
“Tonight is business as usual,” Seungcheol started as another one of his bouncers, Baek-ho, walked over, also removing his jacket but putting it back on as the front door opened and the frigid winter air hit them.
“Merry Christmas Eve Eve!” Sara, one of the bartenders called as she walked past them.
Seungcheol nodded in response, his eyes still trained on the screen as he checked over the schedule and positioning of his staff. “Merry Christmas, Sara!” Sunghoon said, smiling at the small young woman as she disappeared behind the counter, removing her thick overcoat to reveal the short red and white Christmas themed ensemble she wore underneath.
“So boss,” Baek-ho said as he approached. “Where you want me?”
“I’ll let you know once everyone gets here,” Seungcheol answered, glancing up momentarily to give the man a short smile.
It only took another ten minutes for the rest of his security staff to arrive.
Once everyone was there, Seungcheol assigned them their posts and prepared for the club to open its doors.
“You with us today, boss?” Sunghoon asked, grabbing his jacket and pulling it back on as Seungcheol checked his watch. “Yep, I’ll be moving to and from stations to relieve people for breaks,” he added, turning as he heard his name being called.
The owner of the voice was the manager of the bar, Damien. Seungcheol remembered how the pair of them started working at the club together and both had worked their way up to the positions they held now.
“Are we all set?” Damien asked as he approached the stand where Baek-ho was currently setting up the entry process. Seungcheol glanced over at Baek-ho who glanced up and gave him and thumbs up, indicating he was ready. Seungcheol turned back to Damien and nodded.
“All good to go,” he replied.
The first hour of business was probably the most demanding. Lines out the queuing and down the sidewalk meant that inside was packed full of people. It wasn’t like the club was the newest in town, it had been around for a while. It was popular for its high cover charge but low priced drinks which just so happened to be strong.
The bartenders were heavy handed and especially on a night like tonight. Stronger drinks meant better tips.
True to his word, Seungcheol made sure to make his rounds, relieving anyone who felt they needed a break or needed to head to the bathroom. It was his job as head of security to lead by example and he preferred it that way. His staff was more likely to want to continue working for him if he was a good boss.
About three hours into opening and Seungcheol found himself back at the front of the club, relieving one of his roamers so he could sneak off to the bathroom.
Keeping his hands behind his back and maintaining a commanding presence was one of the most crucial parts of being a bouncer. He was scanning the area, making sure people weren’t getting into trouble or making a scene. It was a simple job. Keep the peace but make sure everyone stays safe.
Seungcheol was currently eyeing up a group of guys who were shouting along to the music, making a general ruckus. He caught the eye of one of his other roamers and nodded toward the group. The other bouncer nodded and started making his way through the crowd to politely tell the guys to knock it off.
Sensing he was no longer needed in that area, he moved to head past the bar but stopped as his body collided with another, emitting a loud ‘oof.’
“I’m so sorry!” A voice said in his ear.
‘Wait… I know that voice.’
Seungcheol glanced down and his eyes widened when they landed on the owner of the voice.
‘No way. It can’t be…’
“Y/N?”
It had, in fact, been you he’d run into. The universe worked in mysterious ways.
Or something like that.
Moments later, his roamer had returned from his bathroom break, giving Seungcheol a moment to speak with you.
“Wow, how are you?” You asked, smiling up at him, nursing a drink as you stood off to the side near the bar.
You noticed how much Seungcheol had changed and how he also hadn’t. The smile was the same, the same dimples appeared whenever he flashed you his pearly whites and you took notice at how much he’d matured since you last saw him.
He’d also filled out and was much more muscular than you remembered.
“I’m alright,” he answered with a nod. “Didn’t know you’d be here,” he admitted.
You responded with a shy smile. “Yeah,” you answered, taking a sip of your cocktail. “I’m actually visiting friends for the holiday in between work,” you answered. “My family isn’t exactly accepting after the whole protest fiasco,” you added nervously. Seungcheol nodded. He remembered seeing you in the background in one of the photos of the protest.
“It was actually pretty cool to see you in the pictures,” Seungcheol said, smiling at you which had heat rising into your cheeks. “I’m sure I looked ridiculous. I was in the middle of screaming,” you answered, remembering the picture in question. Seungcheol shook his head. “I think it was really cool of you,” he replied.
As the night went on, talking with you was surprisingly easier than Seungcheol thought possible.
It wasn’t until your friends appeared with their jackets and claiming to be ready to move onto the next bar that it sank in that he might never get this chance again.
You turned to give him an apologetic smile, taking your coat from your friend.
“It was really great seeing you again.”
“Would you like to get drinks while you’re still in town?”
The two of you had spoken at the same time and over one another so neither picked up on what the other said.
You let out a laugh, the sound making his heart race.
“I’ll be in town until after the first of the year,” you admitted after asking Seungcheol to repeat his question.
“I’d love to get drinks with you.”
╾─────────────⭒✧⭒─────────────╼
You checked your watch, feeling frustrated that it was only 6:45.
You had agreed to meet for drinks with Seungcheol at 7 at the bar at your hotel but in your eagerness to see him again, you’d shown up much too early. You sat at the bar, drumming your fingers lightly against the countertop as you looked around at the decor.
The hotel was one of the nicest you’d stayed in.
The lobby was a large room with floor to ceiling windows, letting in all the natural light during the day. The walls of the lobby were off white with ornate paneling and gold detailing, bringing out the gold veining of the black marbled floors. The furniture was cream with gold legs, simple clean lines like most modern pieces.
The front desk stood across from the grand entrance of the lobby, recessed lighting at the floating base gave the light wood an ethereal look as did the waterfall wall behind the desk with back lighting. The tile of the wall behind the waterfall was a dark navy. In the seating area of the lobby, above the curved back chairs arranged in a circle around a large low circular table was what you thought was the highlight of the room.
An ornate, hanging and lighted art piece, almost like a modern chandelier but much too grand to have been placed in a home. It was easily ten feet tall, hanging in a cascading fashion from the ceiling down to the floor, passing through a cut out in the circular table in the center. It was an incredible sight to behold.
On the other side of the lobby were large floor to ceiling glass windows and doors, leading into what you assumed was the ballroom on one side and the spa on the other side. You had yet to visit either but hoped you got the chance before you had to check out after the first of the year.
You checked your watch again and sighed heavily upon realizing that a mere 7 minutes had passed since you last checked the time. It really was crawling along.
The bar of the hotel was through one of the two archways from the lobby that stood on either side of the front desk. The other archway led to the hall with the elevators leading up to the guest rooms.
The bar was a huge contrast to the light airiness of the lobby.
It was dark with lots of backlit walls and recessed lighting. The walls were dark and textured, catching the lights and casting shadows. The bar was a long slim rectangular, black top and epoxied. The bar along the bottom was gold, matching the gold of the barstools and tables that stood around the room.
You were just glad it wasn’t crowded like it had been the last few nights, though it was still pretty early.
Despite being labeled as a hotel bar, it really felt more like a club atmosphere than a hotel bar. There was a small booth in the corner, sat upon a pedestal where a DJ was currently setting up his gear.
In front of the stage where the booth was, the floor was a different material. A smooth black tile in contrast to the dark cool toned wood of the rest of the room. ‘It must be a dance floor.’
Although it was nearly empty, you were sure soon the room would be packed.
You heard the barstool next to you moved and silently prayed it was Seungcheol and not some random man.
Turning, you were relieved to find it was indeed your date.
Seungcheol gave you a warm smile, offering a breathless “hey” as the dimples on either side of his face appeared. God how you missed that smile.
“Hey,” you replied as he turned to face the bar. “Have you been waiting long?” He asked, looking up at you.
‘Oh only 20 minutes but that’s just because I was much too eager,’ you thought with a grimace.
Shaking your head you gave him a smile. “Nope,” you lied.
Seungcheol could see it in your eyes. You never were a good liar the entire time he spent with you at camp.
Deciding not to tease you about arriving early, he instead turned his head to grab the attention of the bartender who strolled over. “Your date finally arrived!” The bartender said with a wide smile, looking at you.
You felt your face flush. ‘Fuck. Busted.’
Seungcheol chose to ignore that and instead ordered his drink.
“Can I get uh…” he started, grabbing one of the small books sitting on the counter, eyes skimming over the holiday themed cocktails quickly. “A Spiked Cider?” He asked, setting the book down before looking over at you.
“And a—?” He continued, waiting for your order. “A vodka cranberry,” you ordered quickly, having already looked over the little book more times than you were willing to admit, even to yourself.
The bartender said nothing, instead turning to start mixing your drinks.
You allowed your eyes to wander, inspecting what Seungcheol had chosen to wear as he shrugged off his coat, letting it rest against the back of his barstool. He wore a simple black long sleeve shirt, most likely made of satin though it was hard to tell in the low lighting.
His shirt was tucked into a pair of black fitted pants, hugging his thighs and no doubt his backside. He was much more muscular than he had been back at summer camp all those years ago. He finished off his ensemble with a pair of black shoes and a black wool coat.
You tore your eyes from checking out his body as he rolled his sleeves up and turned to look at you, the same warm smile on his face.
“So when do you leave town?” He asked, turning his stool slightly to face you so the two of you could converse smoothly.
“After the first of the year,” you admitted. “I’m only here for work actually,” you added.
Seungcheol nodded before looking around. “Not bad lodgings for a work trip,” he commented to which you nodded, a shy smile on your lips. “Yeah,” you said, chuckling nervously.
Why the hell were you so nervous? It’s not like this was some handsome stranger. This was a guy you spent an entire summer hooking up with when you were younger.
“Have you at least been able to enjoy yourself without work?” He asked, resting his chin in his hand, his elbow sitting on the counter as he looked at you with those dark brown eyes of his.
You nodded silently. “Er— yeah, actually,” you added. “I’ve been able to see some of my friends,” you continued, the tension in your shoulders slipping away as you fell into comfortable conversation with Seungcheol. It was like you hadn’t lost touch over the years.
Your drinks arrived shortly after and soon the bar started filling up with patrons. Seungcheol paid for your drinks, though you offered to pay for your own, he wouldn’t hear it. The two of you migrated away from the bar, settling into a small but cozy booth in the corner away from prying eyes of the other patrons.
One drink turned into two and you were nursing your third drink when Seungcheol made a funny remark about one of the bouncers who looked much too serious for his liking.
You nearly spit out your drink, another vodka cranberry, setting the glass on the table top and lightly smacked his arm. “Cheo!” He smiled widely at you, trying to suppress his giggles as you shook your head, trying not to laugh.
“What?” He asked, holding his hands up, laughter finally coming through as you leaned into his side, muffling your giggles in your hand, your other hand landing on his thigh as you supported your weight.
Seungcheol’s eyes fell to your hand resting on his thigh, his heart nearly stopping.
His eyes traveled back up, meeting yours in the dim lighting and your smile slowly fell. You looked down where your hand was resting on his leg and immediately pulled back, a rushed apology tumbling from your lips.
“I’m so sorry,” you mumbled, sitting back and trying to put some distance between the two of you.
Before you could scoot away however, you felt his fingers enclose around your wrist and looked up to meet his darkened gaze.
The way he was looking at you had heat rushing through your body to your face and your core.
It was the same way he looked at you almost every night at camp all those years ago.
You knew deep down that if he asked you to leave with him you would.
But would he ask? Or would you?
╾─────────────⭒✧⭒─────────────╼
If someone had bet against Seungcheol that he'd end up in bed with you that night, he would have laughed at them.
But he also would have lost that bet.
He knew from the moment you asked him to come back up to your room he was done for.
And when your lips met his in the elevator, he knew he made the right call in saying yes.
It had been so long since he'd last gotten to taste you and now that he was here again, he wouldn't make the same mistakes as last time. Not calling you after the summer ended was one of his biggest regrets in life and the universe deemed to give him a second chance. He certainly wasn’t going to ruin it.
"Fuck," you groaned, back arching off the hotel bed as Cheol licked a trail from your clit up to your navel. "I forgot how good you are at that," you whispered, looking down at him in the dim lighting of the room. He gave you a cheeky smile, moving to hover over you.
"Maybe I should go again, just so you don't forget," he offered, dimples appearing as his smile widened. Your hand moved, grabbing the front of his shirt and pulling him in.
"Maybe later," you replied breathlessly, pressing your lips against his hurriedly. "For now, I'd rather have your lips up here and something else down there," you continued, mumbling against his lips as your hands moved to undo the buckle of his belt.
Seungcheol chuckled against your lips, moving one hand to help you undo his pants.
"Someone's eager," he laughed as you let out a frustrated growl, pulling his belt from the loops on his pants and tossing it away. "I can't tell you how much I missed this," you responded, undoing the button and zipper on his pants and pushing the fabric down enough to grab him through his underwear.
“How much I missed you.”
Whatever snide remark he was about to make slipped his mind as his lips parted and he moaned, hips rolling into your touch.
"Someone's eager," you said with a smirk, mirroring his words.
Seungcheol let out a growl, crashing his lips against yours in a heated fight for dominance, which he won, his hands taking over for yours as he pushed his pants and underwear down his thighs.
"You trying to tease me, babygirl?" he asked in a dark tone.
You opened your lips to respond but he'd had enough of your bratty behavior in the past. He didn't give you a chance to respond, lining the tip of his cock with your slit and pushing into you with one hard thrust.
Instead of whatever comment you planned on making, a moan fell from your lips as he bottomed out quickly. Your thighs instinctively wrapped around his waist, pulling him closer.
"Holy shit," you gasped, walls clenching around his girth as you tried to adjust to and accommodate his size. You'd forgotten how big he was.
Your head turned to the side instinctively as you felt him leave soft kisses down your cheek and jaw until his lips were against your pulse point. You waited with baited breath until you felt his tongue flatten against your skin, licking slowing up the side of your neck, stopping to sink his teeth into the sensitive flesh.
You let out a whimper as he sucked harshly, no doubt leaving behind a mark. You were about to ask him to move, beg him for something but your words failed as you felt his teeth graze the exposed skin of your collar, no doubt leaving behind another mark in his wake.
"You know," Seungcheol said as he pulled back, circling his hips and making you gasp at the sudden friction of his cock against your walls.
"You don't have to hold back," he continued, eyes watching the way your face contorted in pleasure as he rolled his hips against yours.
You opened your eyes, looking up at him. "What do you mean?" you asked, moaning as he pulled back and gave you a singular shallow thrust, leaning in to whisper in your ear.
"You don't have to keep quiet."
You were about to make a comeback buy Seungcheol wasn't having it, pulling back again and thrusting into you hard, making you cry out in pleasure.
"Fuck," he growled, starting a heavy pace, the sound of his skin hitting yours filling the room as he fucked you against the mattress.
"God, I missed fucking this pussy," he panted, hand moving up your chest to your throat, his fingers wrapping around your neck and squeezing gently as his hips continued their assault.
Whatever bratty remarks you could have made were wiped from your mind as he pounded into you.
"Look at you," Seungcheol said, a smug smirk on his face.
"Barely even begun and you're already a mess under me. Are you not getting fucked properly?" he asked. You couldn't respond, only incoherent moans leaving your lips.
"I asked you a question, baby," he answered, fingers tightening around your neck slightly.
"No!" you gasped out, heart pounding in your ears.
"No, what?" Seungcheol asked, brow furrowed as he continued to thrust hard into you, each drag of his thick cock against your walls had your toes curling and eyes rolling with pleasure.
"No daddy," you whimpered.
The way his heart leapt at the words made his head spin. He'd never felt that pull before with you. What was different this time?
"That's my good girl," he groaned, letting his head fall into the crook of your neck, letting go of your throat as he continued to thrust quickly into you. “Ah, shit,” you groaned. You felt his fingers grab your chin firmly.
“Such a dirty mouth,” he growled, thumb brushing over your bottom lip before pushing past the plush skin and into your mouth where you welcomed the intrusion with your tongue, swirling it around his thumb and sucking.
“You always knew how to use it,” he added in a lower voice as he watched your eyes flutter shut.
He pulled his hand back, thumb leaving your mouth quickly as your eyes opened to meet his.
You let out a whine as Seungcheol pulled out of you and grabbed your hip, turning you over onto your stomach. "Take this off," he ordered, tugging at the base of your dress that was currently hiked up around your waist.
He quickly got rid of his own clothes as you slipped your dress off and let it fall to the floor before he was on his knees behind you, lining himself up with your entrance again and entering you with one movement.
From the new angle, you could feel him even deeper.
Moaning, you let your head fall into the sheets as he started a quick and relentless pace, hips hitting your ass as he held your waist tightly in place.
"How are you still so fucking tight?" he groaned, punctuating each word with a particularly hard thrust, ending with a sharp smack to your ass.
As his hand made contact with your skin, your walls clenched around him and his hips stuttered for a moment before he was back in pace.
"Should have known you still like being spanked," he said with a scoff. You pushed back to meet his thrust and felt your adrenaline spike as he growled in response, grip on your waist tightening as he gave you a particularly harsh thrust.
You let out a scream in response, fueling his actions and stroking his ego. "That's right, baby, let everyone hear how good I fuck you," he said softly, leaning over to whisper in your ear.
"Let them all know what a good fucking slut you are," he added.
"Mmm, yes daddy," you whined, pushing your ass back to meet his thrusts again. "Keep doing that and I'll pin you to the bed and fuck you like the needy little bitch you are."
You let out a moan at his words, wanting nothing more than for him to dominate you. He was much stronger than he'd been during that summer and you wanted him to use that new strength on you.
"You'd like that, wouldn't you?" he asked, using his strength to push your chest down against the sheets but keeping your ass up.
“Ah~ yes daddy!” You cried out as your body was pinned down.
"Such a needy little slut in heat,” Seungcheol grunted, his thrusts slowing for a moment before he was back to pounding into you with renewed vigor.
“I bet you want me to cum inside your sweet little cunt. Fill you up with my load and breed you," he said through gritted teeth. You moaned, the sound muffled by the sheets as he continued to fuck you hard.
"You'd like me to fill you up? Pump you full of my cum?"
You felt his hand strike your ass again and let out another moan, clenching around him again, drawing him closer to his own climax.
"Oh fuck, keep doing that, baby. Keep squeezing me like that and I'll fucking cum," he groaned, his free hand running soothingly over the red marks on your ass.
"Are you close?" you heard his whisper, making you nod quickly with a mewl as you could feel your own release approaching.
"Of course you are," Seungcheol said with a chuckle. "You gonna be a good girl and cum for me?"
You nodded again, fingers digging into your sheets. "Yes d-daddy!"
"Mm, fuck. Yeah you are. Gonna cum all over this cock and let me fill your pretty pussy?" You nodded again, moans leaving your lips as Seungcheol's thrust started to grow more erratic as he chased his high. "Fuck, fuck, fuck," you whimpered, your orgasm washing over you as Seungcheol helped you ride it out.
"Shit. Mm gonna-" he hissed. "Do it," you whimpered. "Come inside me, daddy," you moaned, holding onto the sheet and letting him pound into you until his hips finally stilled, and he came with a moan, spilling his load inside you, coating your walls in white.
Neither one of you spoke, only panting as you came down from your highs.
Finally, Seungcheol pulled out of you carefully, grimacing as his release slowly spilled out of you, running down the inside of your thighs.
"Hang on," he murmured, getting off the bed and moving to the bathroom to grab a washcloth and run it under the tap.
He returned, carefully wiping the cloth against your skin, cleaning you up. "You might want to go to the bathroom," he muttered, grimacing as he tried to clean up his semen.
You let out a light chuckle. "This is just like the first time," you replied and Seungcheol couldn't help but laugh in response, remembering how he'd filled you so much that time that it spilled out of you and onto the gym mats in the storage shed.
"I almost forgot about that part," he admitted, helping you up and supporting you to the bathroom as your legs shook slightly. "I couldn't forget it if I tried," you answered in a low voice, not realizing Seungcheol had heard you.
You stopped at the door, turning to look at him.
"Will you be here when I get done?" you asked, looking hopeful.
Seungcheol smiled, his hand reaching up to caress your cheek. "I'm not going anywhere," he responded softly, leaning in to press a quick kiss to your lips, causing you to smile brightly.
"Okay, cause I'd actually like to talk some more," you admitted, cheeks heating up under his gaze. His smile widened, dimples appearing on both sides of his face.
"I'd like that, too," he responded.
"We have a lot more to catch up on."

- Whenever your not looking at her she's looking at you. Why do you ask? Cause she thinks that you’re the most beautiful person ever....
- When danger is there she instinctively goes in front of you and holds an arm in front of you yelling to get behind her, she is not gonna let you get hurt.

Queerness and power in YR / why the best comparison is Normal People and not Heartstopper
It’s a big week for Heartstopper - Young Royals comparisons and i’m not on here to throw any shade on Heartstopper. I haven’t even watched all of S2 yet and i know i love it! But thanks to the absolutely stunning, spell-binding work of fiction called the Normal People AU, i’m more and more convinced that Heartstopper and YR have …. not really that much to do with each other — aside from being tremendously good stories, amazing performances, stellar cinematography and direction etc.
Lisa Ambjorn and the team behind YR have been frequently heard saying that they didn’t want to make a show about homosexuality, where the queerness of the relationship between W&S was “the problem” that drove the plot. Heartstopper, on the other hand, is very much a story driven by the tensions and joys of budding queer and non-conforming relationships, sexualities, and identities. But does that really mean YR isn’t about queerness? I think it’s still about queerness, but with a framing that has kind of been lost from view in the post-AIDS crisis / post-gay marriage era.
I didn’t really appreciate this until I thought through the intense parallels with Normal People - as the author of Obviously has so powerfully drawn out. Normal People is about power; and if you’ll forgive me the short-cut, once upon a time, queerness (in modern global North society) was also about power. In NP, the anchoring drama, and the elemental wound, that both Marianne and Connell face rests in power structures that oppress them - in Marianne’s case, the emotional and physical abuse in her family, in Connell’s case, the abuse that capitalism inflicts on him and his family as the working class. They both seek to become who they are in spite of this power structure - while at the same always being molded by it. There is not so much a core identity to either character that seeks to ‘set itself free’ or ‘reveal itself’ by overcoming power but rather a character who comes into fuller awareness of themselves while being shaped by their contexts. For example, in that scene by the fountain in Italy, where Marianne/Wille acknowledge they have never had to think about money, and Connell/Simon says winning the scholarship has changed his life so that there are things he no longer thinks about - and then between them, they bring to the surface that Marianne/Wilhelm’s mother has been paying Simon/Connell’s mother dirt wages for years, and Marianne says out loud how she knows that there is this basic harm in the way they came to know each other - a wound that is not of their doing, but from their class positions, and yet could never be forgotten as part of their story and part of who they became as a couple. The scene is not - we can run away from all this or i see the ‘real you’ behind all this - but, we can love each other and be who we are and yet still be where we come from, with the consequent constraints on our worldview and possibilities for action. “Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances listing already, given and transmitted from the past.”
Basically i think that in YR, Lisa is giving us back a much more Marxist / power relational form of queerness - where queerness is refracted through and emergent from material conditions, as opposed to being purely about declaring identities [“i was born this way”] and thus essential truths or essential desires, but about the ebb and flow between people, where that ebb and flow is mediated by the power structures in which we cannot help but experience our lives. For Wille, the power structure is obvious: the Crown. But it’s there for everyone. For Sara and Simon, it’s three-fold: the power dynamics around class and race, and the power dynamics from an abusive household / childhood trauma. For the other characters, too, it is not far away. August’s struggles are with his family’s expectations, and with a drug addiction and eating disorder that speak to the pressures of hegemonic cis-het masculinity. For Felice, she deals with racial bias and the pressure to be the perfect image of a woman her (thin, white) mother wants. It’s true for all the students at the school - the scene on parents’ weekend as all these parents swarm in is utterly stifling, as every student feels the structure they are meant to conform to. BTW it’s a subplot, but YR seems also to be saying that capitalism and class structure harm even the rich. People - everyone - experience their gender and sexual identities through and in between all that power - it’s necessarily shaped by it.
To me, this is the root of what is so intoxicatingly liberating about Young Royals (and by extension, Obviously) - that i just don’t feel watching HS, or even reading the canon NP - of the possibility of emancipation. It comes about not principally through outward facing revolt, though there is some of that, but catalyzed by a kind of relational self-growth: the characters grow into themselves as a result of their relations with others. It’s not at all about Wille walking this road alone - despite what Simon says he must do in S1/E6. It’s actually about the characters growing together, in a kind of solidarity against the power structures they rebel against. After all, it is Simon’s confession in the cloakroom, and then the look he gives Wille from the choir stand when August is about to give the speech, that compels Wille to his feet to claim his power, on his terms.
It’s a profoundly ‘class consciousness’ form of identity formation and self-actualization - like they become who they are through their struggle in concert with others. It feels utterly foreign and refreshing to me, because it’s just not the dominant discourse for queerness in popular culture, and it helpfully puts the power struggle back into queerness - it recenters the feeling of community, of joint struggle, of solidarity, and yes, of resistance.
This is how it is. This is how i feel.

A highly incomplete introduction to AuDHD for YR fans who want to write more Sara Eriksson
Greetings, friends! In my time in the Young Royals fandom, I’ve seen a few people mention they were interested writing Sara but they didn’t know how to approach her neurodivergence, or that they find it intimidating. I figured it might be worth compiling a post where I share both ADHD and autism resources I’ve found helpful, as well as elements of my personal experience I draw on when writing Sara.
This post is by no means exhaustive, and I could probably say a lot more. But I figured I’d get it out there in case it was helpful to anyone else.
Part One: Resources and Such
Yo Samdy Sam is an AuDHD vlogger who talks about her experiences, and I find her video about how autism and ADHD show up together pretty informative. Since Sara is both it’s good to have a grasp on these nuances! Yo Samdy Sam’s other videos are also ones I’d recommend.
I’m autistic, now what? is also a good channel to check out for someone talking about their day to day experiences of autism. Her videos are a little longer, but she focuses often on how things have changed from her childhood to her adulthood, which can be helpful if you’re thinking about Sara at different ages/writing flashbacks/working on fic set in the future/etc.
Chloe Hayden, who stars in another teen drama called Heartbreak High, is both autistic and ADHD, and very fun and positive. She presents quite differently than Sara does—lots more talking and energy—but I think she’s a good example of every neurodivergent person presenting differently. Also, people should watch Heartbreak High and write me some fic where Sara and Quinni meet because I want it.
How to ADHD is mostly geared toward practical life skills when you’ve got ADHD, but it doesn’t neglect the way those interact with emotional well-being. Sara might try some of these strategies while working on her school work and chores, either because an adult recommended she do so or because it’s part of a system she worked out for herself. Also, the videos are perfectly designed for ADHD brains, and i have acquired many ways to self-accommodate by watching them.
Jessie Gender is autistic and does commentary about lots of nerdy things and trans rights. I really liked her video on The Queen’s Gambit where she talks about autistic girls and sex. If you’re planning to write spicer fic about Sara (which people should write more of imo) then Jessie might be a good resource!
Marieke Nijkamp is a multiply disabled author, and one of her disabilities is autism. I still have to get around to reading her novel length books but her short story “Better For All the World” made me cry and is one of my formative sargust mentor texts. I really recommend it if you can get a hold of the anthology The Radical Element. (Although, heads up, the story deals with the Buck v Bell case of 1927, which is difficult subject matter.)
Disability in Kidlit has some great resources on writing autistic characters from a craft perspective. If you’re going to write specifically from Sara’s point of view, or even if you’re not, it’s worth reading this article about the autistic voice in fiction and this article about humanizing autistic characters. Other articles on the site are also great!
I’m going to talk more about my personal experiences under the cut below…
Part 2: My personal experiences & takeaways
Sooooo if you’ve met one AuDHD person, you’ve met one AuDHD person. I can’t really claim to speak for all AuDHD people, and I’ve only recently gotten my diagnosis anyway. That said, a lot of my own personal experience colors how I write Sara. So in the interest of transparency, I’ve gone ahead and listed some of the things I’ve thought about when I write her.
An important note before I get started—this is not, actually, meta or analysis of the show. I’m not trying to tell you want I “really” think is going on with Sara Eriksson, or what the writers intended, or what the show is saying. You may read her differently, and I’m sure your interpretation is just as informed by your own experiences as mine. So please don’t take this as a criticism if your interpretation is different.
What I am explaining here instead are the ways that my personal experiences as an AuDHD person have influenced my perception of Sara, which in turn translates to how I’ve made sense of her storyline and written her in fanfic. None of these are “excuses,” but they are explorations. You can look at it as me examining my own thinking and writing process. I’m also opening up about some of my experiences and being a little bit vulnerable. If you have questions about any of these things below, or you want to know more for your own fic, you are always welcome to message me. I may not be able to get back to you right away but I can help however I am able. There are also some things I might feel more comfortable discussing in depth one-on-one, so direct messages might be better in that case, too.
Anyway, let’s begin…
Polarized strengths and weaknesses: In my own experience as an AuDHD person there are some pretty dramatic contrasts between what I’m good at and what I suck at. I’m in the 99% percentile in some skills and the 2% percentile in others. This adds up to stuff like, I read the Sherlock Holmes stories for the first time when I was eight and Les Misérables when I was eleven, but I cannot drive a car or learn a choreographed dance no matter how hard I try. This is inexplicable to some people because they’re like, omg but you know all these advanced words! Surely if you can’t drive a car, it’s just because you aren’t trying hard enough! Likewise I think it makes sense to write Sara with a spiky profile of her own, and have characters react to that accordingly.
Perceptions of maturity: AuDHD adults aren’t children. AuDHD teenagers aren’t children either. And yet part of ableism is the infantilization of AuDHD people. I don’t have a lot of huge narrative squicks, but this is one of them, and it’s rooted in frustrations I’ve had over people treating me like I’m still a child. I always write Sara as the age she’s intended to be in the fic. If I see fanfic scenes or headcanon scenarios where someone is treating Sara like she’s five, and that’s spun as positive or never questioned, it can make me really upset and it’s an immediate back button. This is something I would recommend writers be on the lookout for if they’re incorporating Sara into a scene. Maybe this one bullet point is spinning a little far into criticism of other folks, but I think if I could communicate one thing to other people writing Sara, this would be it.
Special interests/hyperfixations: The thing about special interests is that autistic people often turn to them to replenish their energy and get their nervous systems back to a state of equilibrium. (For instance, me writing this post right now about my blorbo Sara Eriksson is me engaging with a special interest to put my nervous system in a state of equilibrium and put energy back in my body.) Sara’s time spent with Rousseau isn’t just wonderful because she loves horses, it’s also something that’s probably helping her recharge after a complicated day of navigating social situations at Hillerska. This is why she panics at the thought of losing Rousseau. Now, there’s still issues here in that Rousseau isn’t actually Sara’s horse. And I do think many teenage and adult autistics with low support needs, like Sara, understand that they can’t engage with their special interests all the time. But in order to write and understand Sara, I have to understand that she’s counting on Rousseau and horses more generally as something that helps her self-regulate and stay grounded. (In Heart and Homeland I also added art as one of her hyperfixations, so she often draws to recharge and make sense of things.)
Alexithymia: Alexithymia is essentially a trait people can have where they struggle to read their own emotions. It’s pretty common in autistic people and other neurodivergent folk; I have a mild version of it. For me, tuning into my emotions is a bit like trying to figure out what song is playing on a staticy radio. I might have to wait and “mess with the dial” a bit before I can fully understand what I’m feeling in a given situation. The question “how are you?” is a bit of a nightmare for me sometimes. Because my alexithymia is mild, I usually can figure out what I’m feeling in time, but I still often need extra effort to discern the nuances. I tend to apply this trait to Sara when I write her, mostly because she seems to need to sit with her feelings to understand how they’re affecting her. This is most evident when she’s trying to figure out if she like-likes August, though it comes out in other ways, too. Sara might just need a lot of time to process her emotions. Even when she’s showing her emotions and in them, they might take a lot of time to leave her system, and she might not catch on to how they’re affecting her right away. In Heart and Homeland, part of the reason Sara keeps a diary in the first place is so she can sort through what she’s feeling.
Heightened empathy: There’s an old stereotype that autistic people don’t have any empathy. This is not true, and some autistics even have an excess of empathy. I would argue that Sara (at least the way I interpret and write her) is one of them. This may seem counterintutive to some, as I have seen people argue that she is insufficiently empathetic to Simon and/or Linda. I see it differently, however. In my own experience, having an excess of empathy doesn’t always mean that I come across as loving and sweet to the people in my life. Sometimes it can make it so you’re so full of feelings toward others that you can’t act. I often function clumsily in conflicts, and feel like I’m caught between different parties, especially if it’s a situation where everyone appears to be hurting. It’s enough to make me shut down and not do anything, or even side with the person who to everyone else is obviously wrong. Especially when I was a teenager, the answer about “who to side with” in a conflict wasn’t always clear to me. For instance, in college, I dated a girl who constantly belittled me and many of my friends, and I let her get away with it because I was sensitive to the ways she was genuinely hurting about life. I am not proud of it now, and I did break up with her eventually and made efforts to patch things up with my friends when I could, but it also took me two and a half years to get there. Thanks to life experience and therapy, I am now better at recognizing red flags and overriding my excess empathy to call people out on their shit when they need it. It took me time, though, and I can’t help reading a lot of that into Sara. In a way, I tend to think her hope that August will own up to his actions is born out of heightened empathy for both August and Simon. She pins her hopes on this solution because, in her mind, it meets Simon’s needs because the person who harmed him has come forward and is willing to be held accountable for his actions and it meets August’s needs because he can find relief in owning up to his shit and stop drowning in regret. Now, yes, Sara is absolutely misleading herself and ignoring crucial details of the situation because she’s in love, and she does misread what Simon actually needs in the situation. This is very typically teenage. At the same time, when I write her in fic, I see this as tied to an excess of empathy, and not a lack of it.
Inertia/Executive Functioning Struggles: Building on what was said above… some AuDHD people (like myself) can really struggle with making a plan and getting started on tasks, and the bigger the task, the bigger the struggle. “Tasks” is a word we usually apply to things like doing laundry, so we tend to think of executive functioning as an unemotional thing, but it can also apply to emotional stuff like, say, having a big conversation that needs to be had or breaking up with someone you know you need to. (Like I said above. Two and a half years with that shitty person in college!) In fact, I would say inertia can even make things harder with social/emotional stuff, because math homework is at least consistently math homework, but social/emotional situations can shift and become more complicated over time. At Hillerska, we see Sara get involved in ever-shifting social politics, and it takes things escalating to the field scene for her to take action at the end of S2. (In a more minor example, Sara taking a while to get ready in the parents’ weekend episode, and Linda rushing her out the door, is a great example of Sara being affected by inertia.)
Menstrual ick: Increasing numbers of studies show that people with uteruses who have ADHD, autism, or both are way more likely to have painful periods and PMDD. This is true for me—one of the biggest signs that my period is coming is that I am absolutely convinced everyone hates me. I don’t know how to apply this to Sara directly, but periods are part of life and if you happen to write about her dealing with menstrual nonsense, this might be something to keep in mind.
Sensory issues: A lot of people are aware of sensory issues for neurodivergents, and every neurodivergent experiences sensory issues differently, and not always in ways that are immediately apparent to neurotypicals. For me, I hate vacuums and car horns and bananas, but for my roommate, she hates any lights on after 7 PM and finds chocolate overwhelming. Sara doesn’t mention any particular sensory issues, but presumably she has some and masks her reactions, so uh… make up the ones that make sense to you, I guess. Or, don’t make them up, but maybe read about a bunch of different people’s experiences of sensory issues and work from there. External stuff like being tired, sick, or being on one’s period can heighten sensory issues, so think about vulnerability factors that might increase them for Sara.
Rejection sensitivity: Many people with ADHD feel rejection or criticism from others with a high level of intensity, even as physical pain. (Fun fact: PMS makes my rejection sensitivity even worse!) I don’t know if we see Sara feeling rejection sensitivity onscreen much in YR, but I can’t help but imagine she’s dealt with it in the past, based on the way she says she sometimes feels like the worst person in the world, when she’s talking to August in 2.3. If Sara’s had therapy (which I assume she’s had in some form because she knows breathing exercises) then maybe this is something she’s worked on coping strategies.
Accommodations in school: I don’t actually know how this works in Sweden specifically or at a school like Hillerska, but I’d love to hear how it works! Someone else should weigh in if they know things. But I would not be surprised if Sara has the legal right to certain accommodations in school such as extended time on tests, guided notes, etc. (Not being Swedish myself, I’m not sure what the equivalent to the Americans With Disabilities Act would be in Sweden.) One thing to note here is that Sara would get to decide herself whether she actually uses her accommodations or not. I would say, based on my observations of teenagers, is that some neurodivergent teenagers tend not to use their accommodations so they can avoid sticking out among their peers. This seems like it might be the case for Sara, since she wants to make friends at Hillerska and not stand out. The other thing she might encounter at Hillerska specifically is teachers who don’t want to meet those accommodations because they’re “old school” and, frankly, ableist. Accommodations are something one should take into account when writing Sara’s academic life, though.
Double empathy problem: This is something that the psych community is talking about more lately, and essentially the idea here is that neurotypicals communicate best with other neurotypicals whereas neurodivergents communicate best with other neurodivergents. That doesn’t mean both groups can’t communicate with one another (and even reducing it to two groups is kind of oversimplifying things, because obviously culture and other things impact communication too) but there are different patterns of communication at work here. In my own life, I vibe well with people whose neurotypes are similar to mine—this is exactly why @coruscantrhapsody and I are such iconic roommates. The Double Empathy Problen is theorized to have played a role in stereotypes about autistic people not having any empathy. (PS: I don’t actually think August has undiagnosed ADHD in canon, at least not according to the writers. Still, I think it would be pretty interesting to write him in fanfiction as someone who has a missed childhood diagnosis given the way he struggles with rejection sensitivity, impulsivity, and emotion regulation, and the way that the adderall addiction could be a form of self-medication that has gone awry. For that reason I think it’d be interesting to see a fic where the sargust relationship is viewed through the lens of the double empathy problem. Obviously not in a way where the ADHD excuses August’s harmful behaviors, but you know. An added layer of delicious nuance. Alternately, I know some folks like to headcanon Wille as autistic. Sara really clicking with autistic!Wille when they finally get a chance to talk is something I’d like to see!)
Neurodivergent community: As far as I can tell, Sara doesn’t really have neurodivergent community. This makes me sad, as someone who strongly benefits from friendships with other neurodivergent people. I would like her to have some in someone’s fic, please! Let me know if you write it.
That’s all for now… maybe I’ll add more in a future post.
For any other AuDHDers, do you have any elements of your personal experience that you incorporate into how you interpret or write Sara’s character? Feel free to reblog and add on, if you feel so inclined. (But also, no pressure.) Like I said, every ND person experiences this stuff differently, so someone else may have completely different experiences than me.

She stood still in the doorway, staring across the great marble floor. For all the opulence of her mother’s manor, the foyer was an empty and foreboding space. Large marble columns stretched as far as she could see, a near endless and imposing row of them. Despite the attention grabbing nature of these columns, it was the large sprawling staircase that caught the eye. Kat turned her attention to it now, following the steps and railing, up and up and up until she saw her.
The light streaming into the stained glass window cast shades of red upon the demon’s face, highlighting her pale skin. When she turned, crimson danced across her mouth like droplets of blood. Though her eyes were usually a rich brown, they never held any warmth. When they looked down upon Kat now, they were positively empty and cold.
“Oh. You’re here.” No warmth in her tone either, voice too flat for much emotion—not that she ever expressed much beyond anger or disappointment or disgust.
“Yes. I’m here.” Kat’s voice matched her mother’s, just as flat and unfeeling. What had she expected, coming here like this? That she would welcome her home? Give her an encouraging word? No, those were human thoughts. If she told Sara that, she might sneer, might tell her she’d spent too much time with humans. The latter was true, but she wouldn’t give Sara the satisfaction of knowing she was right.
“Why are you here?” Sara was dressed in a short black skirt, with gold edging—real gold, Kat suspected, knowing her mother’s desire for all things lavish. Her shoes, too, appeared golden. They clicked as she stepped down those marble stairs. Her long black nails trailed along the railing until she stopped, resting her hand upon it instead.
“No reason.” That was true enough. It’d been a few years since she’d last set foot in her home dimension. Edaros hadn’t changed a bit and neither, it seemed, had her mother. Maybe there was a reason she’d come back—to see if any of it had changed. She wouldn’t let Sara know that either, nor that it was nostalgia that had driven her back through the Shadows and into Edaros land.
“No reason,” she repeated. A scoff followed, eyes rolling. “Aimless. Just like him.”
Kat lifted her head a bit, unfazed by the comparison to her father. She’d rather be like him than like the woman before her. She said nothing, but moved forward, sneakers scuffing lightly on the marble floor.
Sara descended the last few steps and approached her, pausing a few feet away. Her cold stare swept over Kat—head to foot then back up. Disgust, disappointment—precisely the reaction she’d expected. “You dress like them,” she said. Humans, she meant.
“How am I supposed to dress? Like you?”
“It’d be an improvement.” Sara watched her face closely. “Why are you really here? No lies.”
Should she tell her? Rub salt into the wound of her failed expectations? Let her know that humanity had perhaps infected her, made her sensitive and sentimental?
For a few seconds, she didn’t respond, resisting the temptation to turn her gaze away. Steadily, she held Sara’s judgmental, severe stare. “I wanted to. I wanted to see you.”
Surprise registered by the arch of one slender, dark brow. “You wanted to see me? Now that’s human nonsense if I ever heard it.” With another scoff, her mother turned and began to walk away.
“Do you remember?” Kat asked, lifting her voice so it echoed off the immensely high walls and columns. “Do you remember the last time I was here?”
That gave Sara pause. She turned slightly, peering at Kat from over her shoulder. “Centuries ago.” Her lips pulled to a thin, humorless smile. “Edaros time.”
Time did move faster here. A few years on Earth might be centuries here. A long time for Sara; not long enough for Kat.
     “Nothing’s changed, has it?”
“No. Nor will it.” The smile vanished from her face. “You made your choice. There’s no undoing it. Did you hope I’d change my mind? That I’d welcome you back? That I’d want you?”
The words struck Kat as painfully as a physical blow, as if Sara had slapped her again, like she had last time. Human sentimentality—that’s what it was, that’s what had crawled into Kat’s heart and brought her back here. Sentimentality and stupidity.
Sara narrowed her eyes. “You stink of humanity and foolishness, your head full of their ideas. I thought you better than that, but you’ve proved me wrong yet again. Now go. Leave! I don’t want to see you here again.” Her heels clicked as she rapidly walked that endless foyer and disappeared into the dark.
Kat stood there, throat tight, the threat of tears burning her eyes. The Shadows drew Themselves closer, wrapped about her legs, but even They couldn’t comfort her now.
     She never should’ve returned.

I just recently came across your blog but I love it so much!! I’ve always wanted to write and have always had a passion for it. One of my bucket list items is to write a novel. Do you have any suggestions on how to come up with story ideas? I feel like I have a few ideas but they’re more suited for short stories than novels
Tackling "Bucket List" Item of Writing a Novel
Introduction to NaNoWriMo/Coming Up with Ideas
Actually, you've picked a great time to tackle this bucket list item, but we'll get more into that in a moment...
September: If you have ideas that would work for short stories, use the rest of this month to start writing them. They don't have to be perfect (or even good)... the point is to try, because good writing takes practice, and practice means bad writing leads to good writing. You can also start Filling Your Creative Well which will help make your mind a fertile ground for new ideas. You can also do writing prompts (you can find them here on Tumblr, via Google, or in creative writing prompt books.) And, read some books--or at least start reading book blurbs in genres you're interested in.
October: Happy Preptober!!! Now is the time to start gathering up ideas for your novel. You may also want to familiarize yourself with some basics like Literary Fiction vs Genre Fiction, Plot Driven vs Character Driven Stories, and Understanding Goals and Conflict. My posts Guide: How to Turn Ideas into a Story, Guide: Starting a New (Long Fiction) Story, and How to Move a Story Forward might also be helpful. You might also do a Google search for "Preptober Workbook" as many writers and writing coaches offer free or low cost workbooks that will help you develop your ideas into a novel. And why are we doing this in October???
November: Time to write your novel! Happy NaNoWriMo!!! NaNoWriMo (short for National Novel Writing Month) is a 24-year-old writing initiative that challenges people to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days or less. Although NaNoWriMo is just about getting a story down on paper (it doesn't have to be stellar), many popular and successful novels were drafted during NaNoWriMo, including Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus, Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, Marissa Meyer's Cinder, and L.L. McKinney's A Blade So Black. NaNoWriMo is completely free and has a great web site where you can track your progress, and forums where you can chat with other participants. While there's no reward for "winning," there are usually a lot of great offers from sponsors, such as huge discounts on writing programs like Scrivener, so it's worth participating and trying to reach your goal.
You can learn more on the NaNoWriMo . org web site, and in my previous posts about NaNoWriMo:

I’ve been writing seriously for over 30 years and love to share what I’ve learned. Have a writing question? My inbox is always open!

NOIR CITY 21
Celebrating its 21st year, NOIR CITY, the largest annual film noir festival in the world, returns to Oakland's Grand Lake Theatre, January 19-28, 2024. FNF president Eddie Muller will present a dozen double bills pairing an English language noir with a similarly themed foreign language film—24 films over 10 days. Whatever the country of origin, there are heists, prison breaks, missing persons, cultural alienation, love triangles, and lots of plain old-fashioned murder.
Muller says this edition "has been tailored to satisfy those folks who love noir filled with the colorful vernacular slang so essential to American and British noir—as well as adventurous viewers intrigued by seeing a familiar story—typically a crime committed for passion or profit—play out in cultures with different values, mores, and styles." Through his programming of NOIR CITY festivals around the nation and his hosting of the popular Noir Alley franchise on Turner Classic Movies, Muller aims to move audiences past the idea that film noir is a strictly American genre.
Joining him this year, as co-programmer and co-host, is acclaimed film scholar Imogen Sara Smith, a familiar commentator on The Criterion Channel streaming service. "Attending NOIR CITY in the Bay Area has been a highlight of my year for over a decade," says Smith, "and I'm thrilled to be joining Eddie as co-host this year. I'm especially excited that the program we've put together will introduce audiences to some rare international titles, alongside Hollywood classics. It's going to be a stellar festival."
Tumblr media
Kicking off the collection of rarities is the FNF's most recent restoration — 1952's Argentine film Never Open That Door (No abras nunca esa puerta) — based on two short stories by American master of suspense fiction, Cornell Woolrich. The picture was preserved by the Film Noir Foundation in 2013 and has now been completely restored by the FNF through UCLA Film & Television Archive, thanks in part to a grant from the Golden Globe Foundation (formerly HFPA). Fernando Martín Peña, Argentina's pre-eminent cinephile, will be on hand to introduce the film with Eddie Muller.
Included on the 2024 schedule are English-language rarities such as Black Tuesday (1954), Plunder Road (1957), Across the Bridge (1957), and Strongroom (1962). Little-seen international titles include The Human Beast (France, 1938), Aimless Bullet (South Korea, 1960), Bitter Rice (Italy, 1949), Four Against the World (Mexico, 1950), Zero Focus (Japan, 1961), and Smog (1962), a forgotten surrealist masterpiece by Italian director Franco Rossi freshly restored by UCLA Film & Television Archive. Explore the full line up, buy tickets for individual double features and Passports (All-Access Passes) at the festival website.

a sapphic lit primer 🌸
also known as, an opportunity to insist you read my favourites
if you’ve ever found yourself wanting to read more sapphic books, but not quite sure where to start, let this be the post for you! if you’re looking for even more sapphic books, i hope you find something in here too.
there are a few books on here i’ve not read, that i wanted to include to raise awareness of them, more than anything. those are marked by *. as such, you will probably also see a fair few more well known books and authors missed off (but i promise i know about them!).
this is not meant to be at all exhaustive! it’s a collection of sapphic books that i’ve read and would rec, meaning there are still tons more out there. & you can find some of those more at @sapphicreadsdb, readsrainbow (which i co-run with @tenderpotter), sapphiclitbot on twitter & my list of every sapphic book i’ve read.
as ever, this was meant to be a relatively short post. haha.
(i promise i did put links on this post, but for some reason those aren’t working on the blog page. dashboard version seems fine, i think.)

top 5 horror book recommendations? it's spooky season and i need to get my read on...
Hell yeah! Gonna break this down a little. First an obligatory rehash of books I always recommend for this, these are like all-time faves for me
Wounds/North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud - can't choose between these two, so they're tied for my favorite single author short story collection. Nathan Ballingrud is one of my favorite writers of all time
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - a very very close second for my favorite single-author short story collection. Machado is a beautiful writer and finding an author writing such powerful horror from a queer woman's perspective was world changing for me.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - COME ON!!!! You might have already read this but consider reading it again! Absolute classic.
The Cipher by Kathe Koja - dark, fucked up meditation on art and addiction and toxic relationships. I think about this book all the time. A guy finds a weird hole in his apartment basement and then everything goes wrong (first slowly and then very very quickly)
Red X by David Demchuk - talked about this a lot before too but I really do love it. Fictional story inspired by real life serial killings that took place in Toronto's gay village over decades. The author inserts essays throughout the book that makes it part memoir as well. A supernatural story about real queer trauma.

Okay with that out of the way, here's some recommendations for stuff I think would be fun for Halloween specifically
Echoes edited by Ellen Datlow - OKAY CHEATING I ALSO RECOMMEND THIS ALL THE TIME BUT IT'S A PERFECT OCTOBER BOOK!!! Fuck-off huge ghost story anthology. Huge range of tones, pretty diverse group of contributing authors, it's my all-time favorite anthology.
Slewfoot by BROM - this one's got major autumn vibes. It's a story of a woman in Puritan New England who's accused of witchcraft. It's also a story about the devil. Kind of. The print version has really amazing paintings by the author, but I've heard this is also good in audio.
Come Closer by Sara Gran - this is a great little novella. Possession story that really packs a punch. I can't really say much more than that, but it's not a huge time investment and I think it's really worthwhile.
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu - if you can, get the version edited by Carmen Maria Machado (she adds in some great footnotes and it has some neat art too). This is a classic and also quite a brisk read. The original lesbian vampire story.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - here's a new release for you! I always watch a ton of horror movies in October, and if you're anything like me maybe you'll want to read a horror novel about horror movies. This story follows a female film editor in 90s Mexico and her washed up actor friend as they help a retired filmmaker complete his famously unfinished last film, which he had been making with a former Nazi occultist before strange misfortunes and the occultist's mysterious disappearance forced production to shut down.
Okay that was double the amount of recommendations requested so I'm stopping here. Haha don't look in the tags don't worry about it there's nothing there you're crazy

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💗
Oh gosh! This is going back a long way. And all but a few are unfinished novels, because Me.
Shekhinah (CSI, Grissom/Sara, E).
We meet awkward little Gibbie and his doting parents, and bright little Satya and her loving but terribly ill parents. They age up to about twenty one (Gil) and twelve (Satya / Sara). Then I jumped straight for the smut challenge prompts and into Season Six, and never really went back to fill in the rest. Anyway, if you want a backgrounder on how they grew up and why it was so damn hard for them to get together...
Rhapsody For Two (CSI: NY, Flack/Angell, E)
A New York un-Fairytale. Three short years in the lives of two detectives trying to make a difference in the world. A literary love song to two of New York's fictional finest: Don Flack and Jess Angell. This novelette has a Choose Your Own Timeline split, so you get to decide whether Jess Angell lives or dies in your headcanon! (BRING HANKIES.) TW for death.
Noise and Signal (X-Files / Wrinkle in Time / Contact, Mulder/Scully, Ellie/Palmer, T)
A cross-crossover that I still dream about, that I would need a year to research properly and write. It's 2004. The alien race from Vega (Contact) makes contact again, and this time they want to visit, and to help the Earth fight the colonization of the virus-born aliens (X-Files) . But what is their true intention? What is the Divine or Demonic nature of the Spaceship that everybody wants, and to whom does it rightfully belong? Is the Earth just a chessboard, or does Humanity have a greater role to play (Wrinkle in Time series)?
Detour Ahead (Blue Bloods, Jamie/Eddie, E)
Another novel that, as its name implies, ran away from me. I would still love to finish it, but the writing in later seasons unfortunately just made me fall out of love with the show. But this was SO MUCH FUN. Eddie and Jamie get together over Season 8, and try to keep up an actual grown-up functional relationship among a backdrop of shady underworld NYPD politics, impossibly nosy Reagans and Eddie's painful family past.
The Long Game (Lie to Me, Cal/Gillian, T, gonna be E soonish)
A challenge fic! Cal, Gillian, Alec and Zoe have been playing out a decade-long dance of partnerships, family, marriage, divorce and desire. When Alec passes away, the music stops and everyone is forced to see how far they've come, and what the dynamic of the future might look like. TW for drug abuse and death.
