Hey so I've been doing some thinking about a fairly minor piece of worldbuilding for Silen Fah (my ancient but still unfinished book), and I was curious what some other opinions might be! So here's the thing in question:

This is the current design for the armor worn by the military in the Merfaen tiz Ornaru. Everybody wears this style in these colors:

Which is cool and edgy and all, but... is it too boring? So it got me to thinking, should the leather armor be different colors for the different races? (We've got five different races that live in the Merfaen, and each of them operates in different "branches" of the army.) But they should still match a little bit, I mean, they're all in the same army, right? So what about different colored under-layers like this?

Or maybe the races are so different anyway, that this just makes things too busy. IDK. I've never been much of a "fashionista". :P ;)

Have a little Silen Fah fluff for your Sunday! :)

The wind whipped through the grey sky. The trees wildly tossed their heads. Even the house creaked and shuddered in the face of nature’s fury. But, safely wrapped in a fluffy blue wool blanket, Llevarta couldn’t feel cozier. She sipped her tea and turned another page of her book - an old ratty creature with no cover left, which Drackio said he’d found at a secondhand shop in Vluni Olinfah. Books were expensive - someone had had to painstakingly hand-copy it from the original manuscript, and they’d even drawn some pictures - so Llevarta didn’t care about the shape it was in.

Besides, the book was still perfectly usable. It was full of recipes and gardening advice, and interspersed with a handful of little personal anecdotes about the author’s life, as a farmer’s wife in Kohneta. Kohneta was a little-known and even less-visited place, on the “backside” of the Mervaen tis Ornaru. Most Jelturen didn’t even know it existed. She certainly hadn’t, until Drackio had brought her the book. But he’d guessed - correctly - that it would be up her alley. They lived in a very similar situation, here in their cabin in the woods, far from civilization.

They had to, really. Nobody would have approved of their marriage….

There was a gentle pit, pit, pit, on the thatched roof, that quickly became faster and louder as the cloudy sky broke open and released the rain. This house was small, and Llevarta could hear everything, as clearly as if she’d been sitting out in it. But it was a sturdy little building that didn’t let any wind or wet inside.

“Thank the Grandparents for houses,” Llevarta thought as she took another sip of tea. “This wouldn’t be very fun in a tent.”

The wind and the rain whirled about the house. The book pages fluttered. The little child in her womb gave her a gentle nudge, to remind her they were there. Slowly, the smell of the bread she’d put in the wood oven crept through the house. Soon her beloved would be home, and they could enjoy this coziness together.

What a lovely life.

I don't know when the last time was that I drew a disgusted look! XD This is for my OCtober prompt #3 - "Intense emotion"! Featuring Faraena, the Merfaen's resident fashionista. It was pretty funny drawing this; her face is so contorted she barely looks like herself! But I guess the feelings were conveyed alright. ;)

Some worldbuilding stuff

Got a little interest on that worldbuilding poll I did the other week (about the different races of a particular country and the armor they wear in their army), and I'll admit, it was more interest than I'd expected! :D So I did a (more accurate) drawing of said races and thought i might give them all a brief description here. :) Sorry for the poor quality; I can usually edit my colors to look decent but the computer was not cooperating. ;)

Left-to-right, the races of the Merfaen tiz Ornaru! Simi, Fi, Kubli, Noki, and Sor.

Simien are the smallest out of everyone. They have piggy snouts and large, batty ears. They may be small, but they're known for their larger-than-life personalities! In their original design they had six eyes that went all the way around their heads, giving them a 360 degree view of their surroundings. But also they were kinda creepy so I deleted that feature in later versions. :)

Fien are the most human-looking of the bunch - except of course for their wings, and their colorful hair, which ranges from pink to blue but is normally some shade of purple. Most of my main characters (from this country anyway) are fien, including Vellatra. (Well, sort of. But that's another story.)

Kublien are small, but not quite as short as the simien. They're a little more spindly, and have very long, narrow ears and noses. They generally have keener senses than the other races, and excel at tracking and hunting.

Nokien are just a touch shorter and stockier than humans (the average male noki stands at about 5 feet tall). They have black hair, dark green skin, and brown spots that come in during puberty. (Although there are rare instances of nokien - "clearskins" - who never gain their spots, and are renowned for their youthful beauty.) They are generally quiet and stoic people, who put a lot of emphasis on duty, tradition, and familial ties.

Soren are the gentle giants out of everyone. While they are, naturally, the strongest, they often tend toward peaceful occupations, like blacksmiths or miners. Maiga, the sora pictured, is a medic in the army.

It was fun writing all this out! Makes me want to keep working on that story... though I won't be able to work for long since I'm more than eight months pregnant now. ;)

Who inspired your OC?

I don't know their names, but her very first concept, at least for what she looked like, came from the background art on a board game my best friend got out at a sleepover one time - I think it was a Pokemon game, or something similar? Anyway they were these winged, purple-haired, vampirey-looking girls. Joy started out looking a lot more sinister, like them, but was slowly phased into a friendlier, prettier girl. :) As far as personality, I'm not really sure where that came from at all, although I've more recently let her be influenced by Yotsuba from the Yotsuba&! manga series.

Give me a song to define your OC

Hmmm... that's hard. Maybe The Days by Avicii? Or Today is Gonna Be a Great Day by Bowling for Soup? (That's the extended version of the Phineas & Ferb title theme, FYI)

If I met your OC on the street, how would they greet me?

A smile at least, maybe a wave and a "Hey!" if she already knows you.

Can your OC be your best friend? Why?

Absolutely! She's very friendly, optimistic, and outgoing, and tends to be in great spirits. She might drive me a little crazy with her endless questions about the world around us, but she would also constantly be inspiring me with the wonders of the mundane.

Q: Do you have any role models? Tell us a little bit about them.

A: "...Ryan is cool. He's not afraid of anything, and is always fighting to protect people. I want to be a brave hero, like him."

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: "Play with Trajeda. Most of the other kids in town don't want to play 'cause they think I'm weird, or that I'm going to cheat at their games 'cause I've got powers. But Trajeda likes me. So we do a lot together, play house, play hide and seek, play war - me and her and the cat. I also like to sneak out sometimes and play tricks on the Mervaturen. But you can't tell anybody! I'm not supposed to be doing that... might get in trouble."

Q: What's your favorite song?

A: "'The Starlit Unicorn'. It's a lullaby. Tannufia used to sing it all the time when Trajeda was a baby. It's really pretty, especially when Tannufia sings it. She's got a pretty voice."

(Author's notes: Madeline was adopted by Ryan. Ryan later married Tannufia and they had a baby, Trajeda. So everybody mentioned is Madeline's adopted family, but she doesn't use familial titles like "mom" and "dad". Sometime I'll have to do up a picture of the lot of them!)

Alas, Nen Krahm has not had much success with the womenfolk. ;)

Oh dear. On the one hand, Rajag is literally the law! He's supposed to be fighting crime - that's his official job when he's not on the battlefield, since the military and the police force are one and the same in the Merfaen. But on the OTHER hand... we know our boy's getting into mischief and shenanigans left and right, don't we? XD For most likely to commit, probably vandalism or small-scale thievery (can't you just imagine him running around with spray paint, putting mustaches on judges' houses and writing dad jokes on the public bath walls?) For most likely to be arrested for... if we're being perfectly honest, probably a drunk and disorderly charge XP ;)
