My dad has been really invested in Rings of Power and has been asking me a lot of questions related to the first age like what are the silmarils, who's feanor, etc. He used to be an avid Tolkien fan and introduced me to the world himself and he has asked me several time to enjoy TRoP because it's "Good if you think it as outside of Tolkien"

If I had to enjoy something Tolkien-but-not-really-Tolkien then I'd enjoy Eragon or something like that, definitely not something like TRoP which is basically a fanfiction off Tolkien that is massacring storylines and characters.

The Tolkien tags used to be so different that i now have to avoid almost all of it 😭. I have nothing against those who are enjoying the show, but absolutely have personal problems against the show. Look what they did to my boy Finrod. We don't talk about Sauron. If TRoP is getting money then fanfiction writers too should get money off their stuff because it's basically the same thing at this point.

"Good if you think it as outside of Tolkien" seems to be a running theme. People I work with are enjoying the show. I'm the only one who seems to have a problem. I'm also the only one who spends waaaaay too much of my time thinking about the Silm (hello special interest and hyperfixation). Though I'm not the only person who has read Tolkien in the group, anyone else who has has only read LotR and therefore doesn't really have anything to reference the show against.

But you're right, it can be dificult to enjoy it as a thing outside of Tolkien when what they've produced is a step down from the original work. I will also say that I found it hilarious that you mentioned Eragon because that also had a disasterous adaptation XD And contains many elements that very much make it a Tolkien fanfic in itself (don't get me wrong, I had my Eragon phase like the rest of us!)

As for the tags... well... the show is new. The show fandom and book fandom are overlapping quite a lot at the moment, but from looking at the films I feel like things will settle down and maybe separate out better? I don't know. This is just another instance of making sure you manage your online experince well. The unfollow and block buttons are your friends. I'll admit I've done a good bit of unfollowing in the last couple of days, either of people or of tags and you know what? My dash is almost completely back to normal! I just need to block some TROP specific tags and I think we'll be good.

It's sad, I get it. I don't normally actually go searching through specific tags, I follow enough people that my dash is interesting on it's own. Yet even for me, it felt... wrong.. to be unfollowing the Sauron tag. I'm not ashamed to say that I have a feeling of complete strangers ruining something I love deeply (I literally carry around my knitted Sauron when I'm having a tough time, becuase he is very much my comfort character who I must have just so). But despite that, the fandom circles that we're used to still exist, we just need to make sure we're interacting with the right people for what we want to see.

Sorry, if that little speech came off as weirdly patronising? I'm after getting most of the horror out of my system now and am quite happy to not catastrophise about the fandom as a result of the show. I'll probably still pass comment for the next little while becuase I don't have the self control not to, but other than that I think "Unfollow, Block, Curate" needs to be the mantra for now and we'll see that we can continue on as we always have.

Lastly, on money. Unfortunately legalities like rights make all the difference in money terms. Let's not bring the angry ghost of Anne Rice down upon ourselves (though, the new Interview with the Vampire adaptation seems to be beeing met well XD)

Okay in light of that post I've redesigned the map a little bit

and I like it better now! And it will work for the plot much better, too. Not even just the plot and character interactions of Book 1, but I'm playing with the idea of diplomatic relations being Ash's thesis topic. I think it would be a fun theme to play with, a great excuse for why she wants to travel everywhere and ask prying questions, an even greater excuse to show off all my worldbuilding, and finally, a fun contrast between how both Ash and Zach care for people, but Ash is way more big picture, sociological functions and public infrastructure kind of way, and Zach is like "I care about you specifically as a person"

ALL THIS TO SAY. I've upgraded the map and it's only a matter of time before everything else gets upgraded, too.

ok u know that fake 80s horror movie meme that people did on tiktok well aside from the blatant goncharov plagiarism i feel like the idea isnt inherently bad but trying to convince people the movie is real while giving it an obscure and therefore easily googleable name like zapotha is unwise. like goncharov was always openly fake but the video said they want to convince people zepotha is real. too easy to fact check imo.

But.. Godwyn is stuck in an unwakeable slumber. Not dead, as he still breathes oh so softly.. Yet, he's not to wake. No disturbance can shake him awake.. So Marika, grieving the loss of her golden boy, shatters the Elden Ring.

Godwyn is said to be kept in a tomb, Queen Marika dubbing him dead. He lays deep within the tomb, slumbering ever so peacefully.

Godwyn the Golden lay on a marble table, surrounded with gifts and flowers, prayers for him, for him to awaken.. He's covered in flower petals, dried herbs. But still naught a stir.

Various candles, some long burned past their wick, some just brought and burned naught long ago. Yet still, Godwyn slumbers past the plea's of his people, friends and family alike..

Miquella always came to visit him with his twin, Malenia. They together would bring gifts and prayers.. But to no avail. Godwyn slumbers,long past the shattering. Does he dream? Does he stir? Will.. He ever wake again?

So, this is a post that came out of researching a claim I kept seeing and thought... surely this isn't real. Right?

In the early 1960s - some resources say 1963, others 1965 - the Slumber Party set was released by Mattel.

This looks like a piece from another time now. In fact, a lot of people thought it looked like a piece from another time then. Even in 1965 people thought there were problems with this.

The problem isn't that Barbie likes to put on a pink robe and enjoy time with her friends. Barbie can wear pink pyjamas if she wants to. The problem begins with the bathroom scales - they read only 110 pounds. While I'm sure there are slim adult women, ones reading this even, that are 110 pounds or fewer, this is noticeably underweight for Barbie's canonical 5'9" height. Certainly not the weight of someone who needs to be perusing a "How to Lose Weight" book of any kind.

Even worse though when you consider the diet advice allegedly offered in this book.

I'm sure you can see how when I saw this, I thought... that's too on the nose even for old-timey Mattel. Surely this wasn't real. Right?

Well, if it wasn't real, it's an urban legend that is corroborated by many different pictures of the same text, so either it is true or it's an extremely elaborate hoax.

Furthermore, the diet book seems to have originally been released as part of a different Barbie playset - Barbie Baby-Sits!

This set makes me think the controversial Slumber Party Barbie was 1965, as this set containing the original book was 1963.

This set contained not just the weight loss book but two others- How to get a raise, and how to travel.

No word on what the other two books said - some sources say they were blank. It is very possible they were, or that whatever they said was so innocuous it is now lost to time.

Maybe Mattel was going for a joke, like a hilariously inappropriate brief piece of text. Maybe they thought people would obviously see that it was silly.

It is not silly. It is not a joke. Starvation is not something to recommend people to do to lose weight, even sarcastically.

Barbie is more likely a symptom than a cause of a society that idealises thinness but this a pretty hefty mark against her in that discussion.

So, I’m playing through the Fallen Forging Bonds revival and I just noticed something.

In Rhea’s event, Seteth said something about Sothis forbidding all attempts to resurrect her. Was that ever actually in the main game, like actually stated or confirmed out loud?

Like I get that IS and FEH in general has a fetish for Edelgard, but making Rhea out to be more of a villain seems really unnecessary. I love Rhea and I absolutely agree that she’s flawed as a character (which makes her more tragic, which makes her character that much more interesting), but adding that “Sothis forbade it! Look how awful she is” feels like overkill. Just stick with the implication that it was wrong because she’s toying with life and keeping secrets from Byleth and Jeralt because they deserve to know, don’t try to further vilify her with new non-canon information. Especially when, in Three Hopes, Sothis has no qualms over controlling Byleth and even tells them she can take over their body whenever she feels like it.
