Clothing Fasteners
Tumblr media
Introduction:
When you're making or mending your own clothes, there's a fair chance you'll need a way to close your garment. Let's take a look at a few options.
This list is not exhaustive, just a quick overview of some of the most common fasteners.
Types of fasteners:
Buttons: buttons are probably the most common type of closure. While there's a lot of different types, they're usually knob-, toggle-, or disc-shaped and can be made of a wide variety of materials. Sew them onto your fabric and combine them with a button hole or a loop to fasten them.
Zippers: zippers are another popular closure, consisting of two parallel rows of teeth that interlock with each other. Different types of zippers can be used for different situations, including closed-end zippers, separating zippers, and invisible zippers.
Hooks and eyes: this fastener consists of a small hook that inserts into a loop. They're often used in lingerie, but have other uses, too. They can help take off stress of other closures such as a skirt zipper, making your clothes last longer.
Snaps: snap closures consist of two disks, one with a protruding end and one with an indent, that click into each other. They come in different sizes and are convenient if you don't want anything too fiddly. If sewing buttonholes and zippers intimidate you, snaps might be a good alternative to try.
Buckles: buckles consist of a flat frame with a hinged pin that can be used to secure two ends of a belt or strap together by poking the pin through a hole. Belts are probably the most well-known use of buckles, but they can also be used on shoes, purses, and a variety of clothing.
Hook and loop fasteners (Velcro): Velcro consists of two strips that stick together when they touch. One strip has teeny tiny hooks while the other has matching tiny loops: when you push them together, the hooks cling to the loop. As using Velcro doesn't require much dexterity, it's a great closure for people with motor issues.
Lacing: lacing means closing an item by inserting an end of string through a series of holes, eyelets, loops, or hooks. Lacing can be very fiddly, but it allows for an item to be adjusted to your size by either tightening or loosening your laces. This type of closure is popular on shoes and corsets, among others.
Ties: sometimes, all you need to close a garment is a set of strings or straps you can tie together. Ties are often used on looser items such as wrap items (skirts, dresses, pants,...) and aprons.
Brooches: a piece of jewellery used to either decorate a garment or to fasten two pieces of fabric together by poking a pin through your garment. This is not a permanent closure, but rather an accessory you can use on many different garments. Safety pins are a good alternative for these.
Drawstrings: similar to lacing, a drawstring is a bit of string drawn through a casing that can be used to gather fabric in place by pulling on the ends of the string and then tying them in place. Drawstrings are often used on bags, hoodies, waistbands, and necklines, among others.

[ID: a metal zipper, two buttons, a set of snaps, a hook and eye, a metal brooch, two Velcro strips, a belt with a metal buckle, and a corset belt with lacing in the front.]
Conclusion:
There are many options to close a garment. Pick the one that seems the most convenient for you and your project. Some may be easier to install than others: if you don' t feel confident in your zipper-sewing skills for example, snaps might be a good alternative.
If a fastener on a garment breaks, you can either replace it with the same type of fastener or try to replace it with a different type. If you've got an item you love but you don't like the way it closes, you can just replace it with whatever fastener is more convenient to you, too.
I never throw away a good fastener. I've got a shoebox filled with excess notions from previous projects, and whenever I have no choice but to throw out an item, I first salvage whatever I can before getting rid of it. The fabric might be beyond saving, but if it has buttons or a zipper that's still functional, it'd be a waste to throw those out, too.

Note
This probably sounds like a dumb question but on the wheel when it says snaps what does that mean
You stretch a rubber band between finger and thumb, pull back with your other hand and let it 'snap' against your skin. Usually your nipples, labia or clit, depending on how masochistic you're feeling.
Beautifully demonstrated here on a pussy...

If you get it right, your reaction will probably be similar.
