After Xia Yan and I returned home, carrying the cardboard boxes full of Ji Xiaoqing’s items, we immediately started inspecting them.

In Ji Xiaoqing’s two boxes, one was filled with work-related items, while the other was for her personal items.

I first opened the box with Ji Xiaoqing’s personal items and flipped through the journal that we hadn’t finished reading.

One record in had a symbol indicating importance drawn on it.

MC: This record is of the day of Ji Xiaoqing’s birthday.

“Xiaoyu gave me a very expensive business suit. Where did this kid get so much money? She must have cut her spending on essentials.”

“But since these are Xiaoyu’s kind intentions, she’ll be very sad if I reject her.”

“I’ll do my best at work and aim to buy that camera that Xiaoyu likes for her as soon as possible!”

Xia Yan: According to Ji Xiaoyu’s confession to the police, she first borrowed a sum of money from Bedo Loan company before Ji Xiaoqing’s birthday.

MC: She just wanted to surprise her sister…

MC: But Ji Xiaoyu deliberately hid this from us when telling us about her reasons for borrowing the money.

MC: She made it sound like she just wanted to shop around out of vanity.

Xia Yan: As expected, Ji Xiaoyu blamed herself too much about her sister, so she deliberately belittled herself, hoping for everyone to condemn her.

I sighed quietly and continued to flip through that diary.

After Ji Xiaoqing’s birthday, she gradually came to notice how down-spirited her little sister was, but Ji Xiaoyu explained it by saying that she was under a lot of recent academic pressure.

At the end, the journal suddenly stopped on the day that Bedo Loan Company arrived to seize the house.

Xia Yan: Let’s take a look at her work items.

Xia Yan opened the other box. Ji Xiaoqing had left her job in a rush – she had wrapped up a lot of things but not taken them away.

After Ji Xiaoqing died, the company sent these to the police as evidence, which was then handed to Ji Xiaoyu.

Most of what was in there were randomly scribbled handwritten papers, professional work content books, as well as a library card stuck in a book as a bookmark.

Xia Yan looked at these, his brow wrinkling slightly.

MC: Xia Yan, did you notice something?

Xia Yan spread out the papers that Ji Xiaoqing had scribbled on.

Xia Yan: Look at the handwriting.

Xia Yan: The papers that Ji Xiaoqing used as draft paper were the useless documents that she had printed wrongly.

Xia Yan: According to the time that these documents were printed, these ones were from the days after Ji Xiaoqing found out about her sister becoming scammed by the trap loan.

I looked towards the writing on those draft papers, which were unusually messy.

MC: I remember that Ji Xiaoqing took the initiative to resign due to an increase in frequency of mistakes at work.

MC: We can deduce from this writing that Ji Xiaoqing’s emotions were very chaotic then, to the point where she could not work normally.

Xia Yan nodded pensively.

Xia Yan: At the beginning, her writing was extremely messy.

Xia Yan: But on the papers after, her writing began to slowly return to normal.

MC: This means that she had already shaken off or restrained her anxiety and panic.

MC: If so, why would her work mistakes increase in frequency, and why did she actively resign?

MC: The sisters must have been penniless and desperate because of the trap loan, so she must have needed money.

MC: If Ji Xiaoqing was murdered… she must have found out about something.

Thus, Stellis Library gave every member a physical card, and they would even have commemorative cards at irregular times that members could redeem for.

Xia Yan: This library card design is the newest anniversary version that the Stellis Library just came out with.

Xia Yan: I checked when they came out – it was after Ji Xiaoqing found out about the trap loan.

MC: Around that time, Ji Xiaoqing couldn’t have gotten a library card just because she wanted to focus on reading!

MC: Then let’s go investigate the library tomorrow morning. We’ll probably find something out!

Xia Yan: We don’t need to do it tomorrow. Now is fine.

MC: Now?

Xia Yan: There are still several hours until the library opens.

Xia Yan: And since we’re not the police, it won’t be easy for us to directly ask library staff for Ji Xiaoqing’s information.

Xia Yan: It’ll take too long to leave it to the police. I might as well just get access into the library’s internal network and check myself.

Xia Yan opened his computer, rapidly tapping lines of code.

Soon, he entered the library’s library card application records and found the day that Ji Xiaoqing applied for her card.

Right after, Xia Yan viewed the surveillance videos from that day and found that Ji Xiaoqing had used a storage locker at the library that day.

That just happened to be the day before Ji Xiaoqing’s accident.

Stellis Library

Early morning, Xia Yan and I rushed to the Stellis Library. Xia Yan easily cracked the storage locker’s password.

There was only one package in the locker, with a mailing destination written on – “To Stellis Public Safety Bureau”. There was cash and a note on the package.

“Hello, library staff members. Due to reasons I cannot help, I cannot take this package myself.”

“Additionally, as I have moved homes, I no longer live at my original address.”

“I am genuinely sorry for occupying the library’s public resources, but I really have no way to take this myself. Please send this to the police station.”

“The postage payment has been added. Please and thank you so much. – Ji Xiaoqing”

Xia Yan: The Stellis Library management system is very strict and has a good reputation. There has never been an incident where patrons’ valuables were stolen.

Xia Yan: If no one has come to take the things in the locker three months later, it will be delivered to the member’s home, according to the address they left.

The letter said why Ji Xiaoqing did not give this evidence to Ji Xiaoyu, and instead opted to report it to the police.

If something happened to her, the criminals would fix their attention of Ji Xiaoyu. Giving her the evidence would instead harm her.

After, Xia Yan pressed the recording pen’s play button.

???: You’re Qian Yi? Where’s the stuff?

Qian Yi: Of course I placed it in a safe spot – it’s as safe as your event hall, boss.

???: That is not what we agreed on.

Qian Yi: This is something very important to you – of course I’ve got to be a bit cautious.

Qian Yi: Boss, you’re a top name in society – your reputation’s worth a lot more than mine.

Qian Yi: I’m just a little guy in society – of course I know where my place is.

Qian Yi: Don’t worry, all I want is just money.

The recording ended quickly.

MC: Was Qian Yi extorting someone? It sounds like that person has to do with Bedo Loan Company.

Xia Yan: Yeah. Look at these.

Xia Yan flipped open Ji Xiaoqing’s black leather notebook, where Ji Xiaoqing had recorded all her investigations after finding out about the trap loan.

Xia Yan: The last record was on the day before Ji Xiaoqing passed away.

“Those things are still in Qian Yi’s hands. If I call the police, he might retaliate and cause us trouble, which will be bad for Xiaoyu…”

“I will… confront him, and have him never pester me or Xiaoyu again.”

Xia Yan: After Ji Xiaoqing got evidence that Qian Yi was blackmailing others, she wanted to threaten him and have him let of her and her sister.

Xia Yan: If so… her cause of death definitely couldn’t have been a traffic accident. It must have to do with Qian Yi.

MC: Qian Yi died suddenly one week after Ji Xiaoqing’s death due to “cardiac failure”… which likely wasn’t a sudden onset illness.

MC: Instead, it probably has to do with the “boss” in here.

Xia Yan: That’s right.

Xia Yan: I suspect that this “boss” is Oedipus…

Xia Yan: After Qian Yi’s death, he noticed that Sphinx was also investigating Qian Yi. Thus, he thought that Sphinx was like Ji Xiaoqing and had found out about this matter.

Xia Yan: Thinking that he would rather kill wrongly than let anyone slip past, he decided that he had to find Sphinx.

MC: How do we find this “boss”?

Xia Yan: If this “boss” that Qian Yi was talking about really is a top name in society, he’ll probably have appeared in the society news interviews.

Xia Yan worked on the sound comparisons, and soon found matching sound sources.

The Thunder Concluding Thoughts

So I finished watching The Thunder (《破冰行动》) in about a week. I have to say this drama is definitely NOT the disappointment that people say it is. It's pretty good. I’m recommending it to the cdrama fans out there who like crime dramas with a dark and serious story. Just be aware that it does not have an official English subtitle or fansubs (so far as I know).

Anyway, this post will be very very very long (4500+ words, in fact), filled with spoilers and my opinions. If you are planning on watching, please skip this post. I’m hiding everything else so this post won’t be hogging space on anyone’s dashboard.

Storytelling

Considering the story is about an operation to raid a whole village involved in drug trafficking (inspired by real events of Boshe village/博社村) and bring the criminals to justice, it is bound to be dark and gritty, filled with tragedies. But it’s also surprisingly not very gruesome.

The entire plot is separated into many different storylines, which merge and intersect with each other at different times throughout the drama. Here’s the main four:

The first (main) one follows the main character Li Fei/李飞 as he tries to avenge his friend and partner’s murder by finding evidence to bring down the big bad, with help from Chen Ke/陈珂, Ma Wen/马雯, and numerous others.

The second one follows Li Weimin/李维民 and Zhao Jialiang/赵嘉良 (real name Li Jianzhong/李建中), who are the two most experienced people on the law enforcement side in dealing with drug traffickers. Since the former is a director and the latter is an informant/undercover agent who reports directly to the former, their individual story lines only merged after the midpoint.

The third one follows the third branch of the Lin clan (mostly Lin Zonghui/林宗辉) and how it was half destroyed by the main branch and second branch, which culminates in Lin Zonghui’s decision to turn informant.

The fourth one follows Ma Yunbo/马云波, the Deputy Director of Dongshan City Police Department, as he slowly realizes the error of his ways and tries to earn his redemption.

There are other more minor storylines, but I won’t be listing them all out since this isn’t a wiki article lol. Anyway there are a lot of different storylines in this drama, and the ways in which they intersect are interesting, though rather predictable. These intersections also roughly separate out the drama into a few sections, which allows the drama to have a good pacing overall.

However, the way this drama establishes the backgrounds of the characters and storylines is slightly problematic, since nearly all of it is done with flashback sequences. Flashback sequences are a staple in crime dramas of any kind, because it satisfies the viewers’ curiosity, but the constant sudden scene changes were disorienting and broke the flow of storytelling. I guess flashbacks are an easy way to stick to the “show, don’t tell” rule, but I do think some flashback sequences can be told by characters in the “present time”, and this may even help to flesh out those characters more, depending on how they “tell” viewers about the past.

Another thing that was noticeable was amount of closeup shots used, especially in the interrogation scenes in the first half. They do give actors the opportunity to use micro expressions and their eyes to convey the characters’ true emotions. On the downside.....too many closeup shots tend to make me uncomfortable, so......I guess I both liked it and disliked it.

Characters and Acting

Hoooo boy, where to start. I would say this is the best thing about the drama overall. The characters are what really drove me to sacrifice sleep just to binge the entire thing in a week. These characters aren’t exactly unique in the genre, but they made up the heart of the drama, no questions about that.

I guess I’ll start with the main cast here and ramble talk about both the character and the portrayal together. Because this drama had a rough “cops vs. criminals” setup, the main cast was sort of “locked in” to specific character archetypes, and that left little space for the actors themselves to perform freely. Despite this, most of the main cast were able to do pretty well:

Li Weimin/李维民 (portrayed by Wu Gang/吴刚):

In my opinion, Li Weimin was the best portrayed character out of the main cast. Some people said that Wu Gang overacted in certain scenes where Li Weimin got upset or displayed his eccentric side, but to be honest, I don’t think it’s bad at all. I'm pretty sure the dramatic approach is due to Wu Gang's acting style and training, since he was a theater actor first, and transitioned to an actor for TV/cinema later in his career. Wu Gang’s constant little physical movements-- whether it was fidgeting with something or playing hopscotch with his feet--gave Li Weimin a certain air of eccentricity that I liked. Li Weimin wasn’t without his faults, of course, he’s rather quick-tempered and was too eager to see results, which Wu Gang illustrated with his dramatic line delivery in the scene where he was furious at Ma Yunbo for not ending all drug trafficking in Dongshan city in 3 years. The most noticeable flaws in Wu Gang’s performance (to me) was his salute (seriously can he just straighten that wrist lol) and his voice, because his voice had that smooth quality of a documentary narration, so occasionally it felt like he’s just flat out describing things. Not that I’m complaining, his voice is very pleasing to the ear, but it just doesn’t fit the scene sometimes. His best scenes for me were: 1) when he stubbornly refused Li Fei’s offer to buy a hoodie for him because it made him look too young (can relate because I have an older relative who’s exactly like that lol); 2) when he was questioning Cai Yongqiang while nonchalantly playing with his shoelaces; 3) when he had a sorrowful inner monologue about how he would be all alone if both Li Fei and Li Jianzhong died like all of his other comrades; and 4) when he suffered the loss of his friend during the climax, and had to try hard to stop himself from losing control to grief before the operation was over, because he was the frontline commander and was thus responsible for all of the agents.

Lin Yaodong/林耀东 (portrayed by Wang Jinsong/王劲松):

Wang Jinsong never disappointed in any role he’s been in, really. He’s the actor who played Marquis Yan Que in Nirvana in Fire and the unforgettable eunuch Yang Jinshui in Ming Dynasty in 1566. I don’t think Lin Yaodong was his best performance (the best had to be Yang Jinshui in Ming Dynasty in 1566, hands down) but it was still very good. The way Wang Jinsong played Lin Yaodong (especially the even line delivery and the deliberate body movements) gave him a dignified air befitting a powerful elder. It was also thanks to Wang Jinsong’s great performance that I realized what Lin Yaodong was: he wasn’t just a drug lord, he was a hypocrite. He kept stressing the importance of clan and family, yet he was the one of the people responsible for deaths of half the third branch family; he kept reiterating that he brought wealth to Tazhai village, but what he did was slowly eroding the villagers’ motivation to do any honest work; he kept emphasizing the need to protect the Lin clan, yet the drug trafficking he introduced to the village literally ruined the young people of the village. To Lin Yaodong, the clan was nothing but a means to an end that benefits him, otherwise he would not be exclusively using members of the second branch family to do all the dirty work.

Li Fei/李飞 (portrayed by Huang Jingyu/黄景瑜):

Li Fei is apparently quite controversial despite being the undisputed main character of the show. A lot of people think his character was “unnecessary”, “badly written”, and there were even gossip floating around about how the character was just a way to “get Huang Jingyu onboard”. Seeing all of those comments made me pretty confused, because I thought Huang Jingyu did a pretty good job for someone who didn’t have a lot of experience in acting. Before anyone says though, I am not a Huang Jingyu fan, just want to get that out of the way first. This is literally the first drama I’ve seen him in. I think his portrayal was easier for younger audiences (by that I mean early to mid 20s viewers like me) to relate to. Li Fei’s outpour of grief upon seeing his partner getting murdered right in front of him, his clever interrogation of drug dealers, his goofy little tricks that outsmarted the criminals, his dejected disregard for his own life when he expressed desire to go to Tazhai village alone; his shock and anguished headbanging on the car window upon seeing his father getting murdered (also right in front of him); and finally his emotional numbness while saying goodbye to the father he never got a chance to know.......all of it was done convincingly. I’ve laughed with him, I’ve cried (a little) with him, and for me that’s good enough. There were other comments about how Li Fei was too hot-headed to the extent of being frustrating, but I think that’s just how the character was meant to be (Li Fei was supposed to be in his early 20s). That said, I do think Huang Jingyu needs work on two things: enunciation and facial expressions. He did well when a scene required him to convey a particular emotion, but he wasn’t able to convey a mixture of different emotions (I will give an example later). If he could make improvements in these two areas, I’m sure he would become a much better actor.

Now for memorable supporting characters. In my honest opinion, the supporting characters are the ones who really made this drama good. These actors’ performances regularly steal the limelight away from the main cast.

Lin Shuibo/林水伯 (portrayed by Qian Bo/钱波):

Lin Shuibo was a once-respected teacher who became addicted in a desperate attempt to save his addict son, and was thrown out of Tazhai village for being an addict after his son died from overdose (was revealed to be murder). Later he devoted his life to take care of a homeless drug addict teen he met on the streets. I have to say, Lin Shuibo was the first supporting character that really caught my attention and made me cry. Qian Bo nailed this character. The dejected slump of his shoulders, the hopelessness and anxiety in his darting eyes, weeping for his son with tears leaving tracks on his dirty face, explaining that he tried drugs so he could set an example of successful rehab for his son......this character may not be more than just a plot device, but he actually tore at my heart. Teaching was a highly respected profession in China, so for a teacher to fall into addiction and homelessness, resort to picking garbage for a living, that’s literally falling out of paradise and straight into hell. Despite this, Lin Shuibo never lost his kindness or capability to love, and that's what saved him in the end.

Ma Yunbo/马云波 (portrayed by Zhang Xilin/张晞临):

Originally I was going to put Lin Shengwu as the second of the memorable supporting characters, but then Ma Yunbo’s best scenes happened and made me change my mind. Ma Yunbo was a pretty interesting and complex character, since he started the drama as a “good guy”, but as the story went on, it was revealed that he was the corrupted cop. Then as the viewer learned more about the character, we started to see that he was not simply in it for the money like Chen Guangrong (another corrupted cop). He was more or less coerced into it by Lin Yaodong because of his wife’s debilitating chronic pain, which was in turn the consequence of taking a shotgun blast meant for him. Before the start of the story, the pain had grown too much for his wife to bear, so she turned to heroin for relief, and Lin Yaodong took the opportunity to become her supplier. This was a major problem for Ma Yunbo, since he was seen as a hero who served justice to drug traffickers and was the pride of his shifu Li Weimin. Here, both the drama and many viewers say that Ma Yunbo’s greatest weakness was pride, and that was why he became corrupted, but I disagree. I don’t think Ma Yunbo’s most important trait was pride, I think it was love. I think he loved his wife deeply and that was the only reason why he started dealing with Lin Yaodong. If he was as prideful as people say, I think he might refuse his wife's request instead. In fact, his wife's suicide was what finally unshackled him from his constant internal conflict. Thus, his internal conflict was really a three way conflict of pride vs. love vs. doing what’s right. Zhang Xilin’s approach to such a complex character was subtle, conveying most of the internal conflict with facial expressions. The way he could seem to make his face age instantly with an expression was brilliant.

Lin Shengwu/林胜武 (portrayed by Zhao Xuan/赵煊):

First, this character was pretty much a plot device. Lin Shengwu really only served 3 purposes in the story: to delay the video evidence from getting to Li Fei until the time is right (to manage pacing); to cement the people from the main branch and second branch of the Lin clan as the big bads of the drama; and to serve as a reason for Lin Zonghui’s eventual decision to become an informant. The first one is pretty straightforward, but the second and third purposes require acting skills to achieve, because the audience needs to be able to pity Lin Shengwu. And boy did Zhao Xuan deliver. Lin Shengwu’s death was the second time I got emotional while watching this drama (first time was that scene of Lin Shuibo I mentioned). The scene where a wounded Lin Shengwu called asking Lin Zonghui to take care of his children and telling him “if there’s a next life, you will still be my Uncle Hui” with a quivering voice just straight up broke my heart. Lin Shengwu was certainly not a good guy (he was the one who destroyed the evidence at the very beginning, and probably participated in drug dealing), but he really did love his family and tried to protect them, unlike Lin Yaodong. Unfortunately, his family was already in the grips of the devil from the very start, so he was destined to lose everything.

Lin Zonghui/林宗辉 (portrayed by Gong Lei/公磊)

Of the two most conflicted characters in the drama, one is Ma Yunbo, and the other is definitely Lin Zonghui. As the family head of the third branch in the Lin clan, he was forced to watch as members of his family died at the hands of his relatives, but because he tried to stay out of trouble, he could neither say nor do anything about it. Plus, like most other members of the third branch family, he was a person who actually cared about the clan. As time went on and more people close to him died, his internal conflict changed from self preservation vs. avenging his family to protecting the Lin clan vs. doing what’s right. I don’t feel that his death at the end was really necessary to the plot (it was probably done to further expose Lin Yaodong’s hypocrisy), but given everything his cousins Lin Yaodong and Lin Yaohua have done, he’s more than justified to confront them. Acting-wise, like Zhang Xilin, Gong Lei also conveyed Lin Zonghui’s internal conflict mostly with facial expressions and body movements. There was always a slump in his shoulders, and the way his eyes alternate between looking powerless and burning with fury was really great. However, I didn’t quite like his approach to the climactic confrontation scenes, because I felt that he was a little overdramatic there, especially the line delivery, which briefly broke my immersion.

Lin Can/林灿 (portrayed by Song Hanhuan/宋撼寰)

If I’m only talking about the acting, then I might rank Song Hanhuan’s performance as the second best in the supporting cast, right behind Zhang Xilin. I do admit that I’m rather biased towards the good guys and complex characters, but no matter which way you cut it, Lin Can deserves a mention. The first time I noticed him was very late in the story, right at the climax where Lin Can and Li Fei were both threatening to kill the other’s father. Huang Jingyu was not able to convey Li Fei’s emotions well enough (again, his facial expression needs work), but in contrast, Song Hanhuan really conveyed a wide range of emotions just in a few seconds, from fear to desperation to even a little hint of regret. In fact, he looked as if he was on the verge of total mental breakdown. That scene prompted me to go back and revisit his other scenes after I finished the drama, and that was when I realized Lin Can actually cried a little bit when Lin Shengwu died. At the time when I first saw the scene, I thought Lin Can was just shocked to see Lin Shengwu commit suicide, but now, thinking back on Lin Can’s lines about how he and Lin Shengwu grew up together as playmates, I think Lin Can actually felt sad there, however briefly that emotion lasted. That single tear was a very simple (and easy to miss!) gesture that added a whole other dimension to what would otherwise be a rather flat henchman character.

Cai Yongqiang/蔡永强 (portrayed by Tang Xu/唐旭)

I do wish the writers could have given Cai Yongqiang more scenes, because the few scenes he appeared in were all great. The scenes where Li Weimin questioned Cai Yongqiang were the among the best in the entire drama. At the time in the story, Cai Yongqiang and Li Weimin didn’t trust each other (although it was later revealed that they were both good guys), and were both trying to see if the other person was corrupted. This led to a few interesting exchanges between them filled with quotable lines, but the best part has to be Cai Yongqiang’s answer to Li Weimin’s last question about Cai Yongqiang’s evaluation of himself and the drug control division. The way Tang Xu delivered these lines (his voice was quivering with emotion almost the whole time) was really touching:

“For drug control officers like us, there’s two dangers. The first is mortal danger, because our opponents are people who would bid their lives for money. It’s not just our own lives in danger, but also the lives of our partners, our families”......”The second is temptation. Money making is easy for drug traffickers. To save their own skins, they would try their damnedest to bribe us. Tens of thousands (yuan), hundreds of thousands, even a few million at a time. For them, a few million is the profit they earn in a few days, but for young officers who earn a measly 2-3k per month and has to pay mortgages and raise children with it, this contrast is too much. Not being tempted is impossible. But every officer in my division has overcame the temptation, and for that, I think they are all terrific. All of them are admirable.”.....”When you’ve been on the force for a while, you start to develop a deeper understanding of human nature. A lot of bizarre things happen every day. Sometimes, not being able to see them is a real blessing.”

Thoughts on Theme

The message of a story like this is obviously “drugs are bad, kids, it ain’t worth it”, but I would say the theme is conveyed pretty well here, because the story gives us all of these characters who are examples (some of which I’m sure are inspired by experiences of real people) of what may happen once you start to do/sell/make such addictive controlled/prohibited substances as crystal meth.

First is the effects of addiction on users. This part is pretty obvious, and we have many examples throughout, though there were a few different reasons for each of them coming into contact with the drug in the first place. Zaizai (Lin Shuibo’s son) was a representation of teenagers who became addicted because it’s seen as “cool” and “everyone was doing it”. Wuzai became a drug dealer, because it gave him better profits than working entry-level jobs, and eventually he became an addict as well. Then there’s women who became addicted due to severe emotional stress, like Yang Liu and Cai Xiaoling (it was hinted that her addiction may have been a major factor in her miscarriage). Of these people, Lin Shuibo was a special case, as he apparently tried drugs out of a desire to help his son quit, but became addicted as well. Out of these characters, most died either due to overdose, continued drug-abuse, or murder (from being in close contact with dangerous criminals). The only two who got a good ending were Lin Shuibo and Wuzai, since both were able to quit and earn an honest living. Of course, this could not happen if they weren’t supporting each other through the rehab process.

Second is another type of effect that the drugs had on those who made/sold them, and that is greed. The reason Lin Yaodong had so much power over everyone else in the village was because he could give them the money they desired. According to Lin Yaodong, the village used to be dirt poor, but ever since he led the villagers to manufacture crystal meth, everyone there quickly became wealthy, and all that easy money gave rise to greed. Lin Yaodong then used a combination of his own status in the clan and the greed of the villagers to control them, thus satisfying his own lust for power:

“I know whether the people of Tazhai have had a change of heart just from sitting in this car. At this hour, adults should be leaving work, and children should be leaving school, all of them going home, even the elderly lady selling produce. The fact that our car can drive forward so smoothly on this narrow road means the people of Tazhai haven’t had any change of heart.”

This lust for power was also the reason he described his goal as to build the biggest, most beautiful ancestral shrine for the Lin clan. He saw the ancestral shrine as the seat and symbol of his power, and this was apparent when the three family heads gathered there like a panel of judges at a court to announce Lin Shengwen’s punishment.

Lin Yaodong’s image as the great provider for the village then began to corrupt the younger generations of the village as well, since they all looked up to Lin Yaodong and hoped to become his henchmen. This began to destroy the real familial bonds between people in the clan and replaced it with simple trust and blind loyalty, which effectively turned the clan into a sort of mafia. Even though almost everyone in the main branch and second branch still talked about what’s good for the clan and seemingly tried to contribute in their own ways, when one compared what these characters say versus what they do, then their true motivations began to show. There’s Lin Yaohua and his two sons, Lin Can and Lin Tianhao, who would maim, torture, and kill members of their own clan just because trust was broken. For them, there’s not much real familial bond to speak of, there’s only loyalty to “Uncle Dong” (Lin Yaodong) and "Uncle Hua” (Lin Yaohua). They may still call each other “brothers”, “uncles”, but these words contain more indications of power than affection. At the same time, the blind loyalty eroded away at the humanity of the younger members of the Lin clan, and this was perfectly demonstrated with Lin Can’s sudden decision to kill Zhao Jialiang at the climax, an act that disturbed even Lin Yaodong.

My Criticisms & Other Thoughts

Finally, criticisms.

I agree with other people that the writing for the 3rd and 2nd to last episodes (ep 46 & 47) did not seem to have the same quality of writing as earlier episodes, but I am of the opinion that it wasn’t a huge problem. What was a problem was the overacting from some actors at the climax. Again, it wasn’t that bad, but it was enough to briefly break my suspension of disbelief. Also, the last episode was among the best in the drama.

About the complaint that Zhao Jialiang’s death was unnecessary and forced into the script, I disagree. I don’t think Zhao Jialiang ever went into Tazhai village expecting to come out alive in the first place. Dude’s there to avenge his wife and that was it. On the other hand, his death also highlights how far Lin Can had fallen. Point is, his death might feel abrupt, but it does make sense if you think about it.

About the “plot holes”. I agree with one comment I’ve seen that many of the “plot holes” people pointed out were actually explained in later episodes. They probably commented pretty early on in the drama, so that’s why certain things seemed like plot holes to them.

As for Chen Ke, again, I do agree that she may be the weakest character in the drama, but unlike some have said, I don’t think it was 100% on the actor, and I’m pretty sure it had something to do with the writing. This drama clearly aimed to be realistic, so almost all of the characters expressed some sort of shock upon seeing another character get wounded/killed, and I think that’s the reason why Chen Ke panicked when Ma Wen got blasted with a shotgun. Chen Ke was just a normal civilian who happened to be a nurse, she’s not a nurse in the army or something, of course she would be shocked if the event took place in front of her eyes. Seeing the aftermath and witnessing the event first hand are completely different things.

Everything else about the drama, cinematography, music, etc....were all ok. Nothing bad, but also nothing notable. I did like the theme song though.

(Bonus little rant about all those cdrama scenes where a character is severely ill or wounded or killed..........can we stop having all of them spit out mouthfuls of blood???? When a character got stabbed in the guts or shot through the heart, they should NOT be spitting blood, unless they are also wounded in the lungs or stomach or mouth, then ok fine, but it’s still more of a situation of coughing up blood. Seriously. When Zhao Jialiang got shot through the heart and immediately started spitting blood, I actually burst out laughing. This silly shit needs to change.)

And that is it! All in all I liked The Thunder, and I may watch it again later.

(ADMIN RO) : We the admins have largely been unable to find a lot of fanfiction prominently featuring Yehua or Lian Song in general on our side of the fandom, but we’re sorry you’re having a bad experience with portrayals!

As a person who does occasionally take initiative to portray these characters in fan-derivative formats, however, I do think that Yehua has his insensitive and selfish sides. It’s the way he’s raised from a very young age, which manifests itself even so early as when in their childhood, Sujin used to come sit at his desk - he literally obliterates her out of his peripherals and just regards her existence like a brush rack.

That tunnel vision came from, most likely, Tianjun’s philosophy on raising future sovereigns, which is that to be the perfect sovereign Yehua’s supposed to be largely emotionless and weigh pros and cons and gains and losses over feelings. There’s also a lack of, presumably, a lot of social interaction that isn’t based on either academia or politics. Strategically, I think Yehua’s thought process, even applied to love and feelings, is very much “this is the best thing to do in this scenario, and therefore the right thing,” and I think only when the results come out badly is when he realizes it may not have been the right thing, and even then he may not understand necessarily where he went wrong.

So, I think it’s reasonable in the aftermath of his mistakes for him to do badly. And at that point in time his primary goal was to hold on to Qian - given that he had already lost her once. So, understandably, a lot of it doesn’t come out until later. Now, is this still in fact, selfish? Yes. Is it for more complicated reasons than just Yehua is a Selfish Person and the Worst? Also yes. It’s really a balance, and I’m sorry that your reading material has not been hitting that balance.

As for the topic of physicality - that is different between the couples of each book, I think. As a writer, one of the big rules I personally follow is that anything that goes into the final cut of the draft has to have meaning. It has to matter in some significant way, and the same goes for affectionate or sexual scenes. Now I don’t know how everyone else views it, but viewing it from this perspective, I think the physicality of the relationship, specifically for Yehua and Qian - it’s an “in,” if you will, to their romance, the same way Yehua moving to the fox cave and integrating himself into Qian’s life and taking her on walks and cooking her food is an “in.”

Their love is very much a “walking along with you for a while and suddenly realized we love each other” kind, and for Qian, because she’s been going at it alone for so long and because she has had her trust broken before, she definitely needed to get used to the idea of having someone, of loving someone, of existing in the same space as that someone and regarding him not as an outsider but as family, as someone she loves and trusts and can rely on. And so narratively, the physicality becomes important. It becomes sort of the symbol and metaphor for intimacy, for trust, for, bridging their gap and both getting used to and putting down their defenses in regards to loving each other. I always say if the romance is good and well-structured, then the physicality can only add to the depth and meaning of that love. I think in this instance, Tang Qi is very much successful.

Thank you very much for your kind words regarding our interpretations of the characters! On this blog we are always trying to fill in character motivations as deeply and three dimensionally as possible while not obliterating their flaws. It’s nice to know that we are succeeding, at least to some degree!

(ADMIN LIN) : Now that Admin Ro has addressed Yehua, we’re going to get into the nitty-gritty of Lian Song. Jk jk. We don’t quite know what you’re referring to when you say painful tropes in reference to Lian Song. If it’s how he is portrayed as a playboy - that is in fact not a fandom creation, TQ herself has explained that he is in an author’s note of Lotus Step’s and how it differs from the typical brand.

Admin Ro is kind enough to do the translation of the author’s note for me.

Also, I'm not trying to speak up for Lian San, but I'm curious - have you all forgotten he's a playboy? From the start his character setting has never been The Good Man, so, to everyone who asks why he's flirting with her with no intention of marrying her, flirting with her with no intention of marrying her is completely normal for him. Have you all forgotten the beauties that come and go in Yuanji Palace? He has always been the not assertive but not refusing and definitely not responsible Third Highness ahahaha.

For a playboy to go for a beauty that's his type without any care is an easy thing. To debate and consider her interests for a long time is the real action that's different from his usual behavior. This action shows that he feels differently about this person. If they were fighting for a day of pleasure, then what's the difference between Cheng Yu and the beauties that pass through Yuanji Palace?

However, if you meant there was other interpretation of him out there, we’re definitely sorry you’ve seen those. He definitely does struggle with depression-like feelings, although the mentality also ties to Buddhism, so we believe it’s a mixture of both that the author is showcasing with him. As someone who suffers a similar form of depression, he’s a refreshing take on it. It’s not the typical sad-depression, it’s just an emptiness but still existing and still doing things, even if he switches through 3 million hobbies on any given day.

Now mind you, majority of which we talk about Lian Song on this blog takes place during Lotus Step and 50,000 years predating what you’ve witnessed in the variations of him in the dramas. Those are still valid parts of him. Especially regarding Cheng Yu, which James Li (Lian Song from both dramas) has said in an interview their relationship is something like 50% friends and 50% lovers.

There is also the serious, decisiveness in which you see when he’s advises Yehua on things. Then there is suggestions Lian Song makes to Yehua, such as the ones that lead to Yehua “meeting” Su Su a second time, this being in his human form. His advice with love is odd, but it’s never done out of his understanding of situations. And his understanding of love, which is shaky at this point in time and that neither admin can say what it is exactly yet in Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms or Pillow Book, because we haven’t had time to sit with him in either timeline beyond him being melancholy over Cheng Yu when she won’t look at him during Bai Feng Jiu’s sword case and earlier in the novel having been making the saber for Cheng Yu that required some help from Donghua Dijun.

As it comes to physicality in reference to Lian Song and Cheng Yu - their love story is a bumpy trail, that we still don’t know the full extent. However, if there is any more sexual tension between them, it won’t be appropriate to adapt that aspect of them as it’s a heavy tension. And they are required, by the universe in the future, to have a child. So, once again, Lian Song is not misinterpreted when it comes to these aspects. This doesn’t take away from the romantic elements - sexuality and romance can coexist. They most certainly do within all the couples of this series, these two however are currently the most prominent of the couples so far.

Caught and in a warm embrace, you felt a step closer to home. You laughed, whilst the younger giddly jump in your embrace.

An unamused expression pasted on his face as he stared at Xiaogui who has his hands all around you.

“I came prepared, knowing this rascal wants me to lose my memory so I can date him instead”, you clucked your tounge.

Xingjie came closer to you, nodding. Forcefully pulling Xiaogui from your embrace. With the kid away from you, Xingjie easily slung a hand on your shoulder.

He uses another hand to guide your face near him, he rest a kiss on your lips. With a smile that made you melt, you swore you have never seen such being so perfect like Xingjie.

“Welcome back, beautiful”

He takes the bag of groceries you brought to make food for the others, and grabbed your other hand, proceeding to the kitchen.

There he setted the bag down on the counter, helping you organizing them.

This was a routine of yours. You’ve been dating with Xingjie since senior year of Highschool before proceeding to college. Which quite tested both of your bond on each other.

It wasn’t too convinient being in an relationship when you are seperated. Especially since Xingjie here is busy promoting after Idol Producer and then you’re buzzed up with college. But both of you made it work.

Yanchen didn’t even need to finish his sentence, because we all know that small kid. He loves making a fuss.

“You know, Y/N. Huba-ge here is so drowned on love, he makes songs about you since you started dating. And speaking the truth, mostly it’s him pouring out his emoti-“

Xingjie launches himself on Xiaogui, ready to murder him. You on the other hand was blushing.

You and Yanchen just stood at the side watching, you stared at Yanchen. “How about we let them have their moment?”, you suggested.

Yanchen was about to object, before Xiaogui started producing a whale mating call scream. So Yanchen, caring about how much his life worth, nodded at your suggestion.

“Great, help me with dinner then”, he nodded again. Getting one last glance at Xiaogui’s last wrath, he went to wash the vegetables.

Content fills in your heart. You finished the bloodbath peaceful dinner with the boys, where they decided to excuse themselves after they finished.

You hummed a soft tune as you turns on the sink water, ready to wash the dishes. You bubbled up the sponge and took a plate to clean.

Until a hand snaked around your waist, and you felt a small weight on your shoulder.

You smiled, already knowing the culprit.

“Hello again, Xingjie”, he hummed in response.

You were quiet sad knowing the day ends too early, as you still wish to be with them longer. Around Xingjie longer

“Busy life in college?”, he asked out of the blue. You nodded. “Kind of”

He lets go of the embrace, slowly cutting the warmth. Slowly you felt the cold air cooling. You stared at Xingjie, walking beside you to the dishrack with a drying cloth.

“Do I need to use a paperbag to cover my face or do you want to bore holes on my handsome face?”, you snapped back out of trance and stared at a smirking Huba. I had to

You quickly turned and continue doing the dishes. He is chuckling, taking a clean plate from you before proceeding to dry it.

“I never knew your songs was about me”, you said softly. You saw Xingjie grew rigid before he sighs.

“I didn’t want you to know”, he said catching you off guard. You looked at him unsure what to feel about his response.

“I don’t mean it in a bad way, Y/N”, he said noticing your gaze. He continued to talk whilst drying the plate.

You decided to continue also, still bothered by his answer. Xingjie probably sense your aura of discomfort, he puts down the plate and cloth.

“Y/N”, he called softly. You looked at him, he was already facing you, a hand on the counter.

“Look, you known me since 2nd year of Highschool and we have been dating for almost 2 years now. Being with you is everything I could ask for, ever.”

“What are you getting in with-“

“Listen”, he sighed. Gulping a little, he continued.

“You know I have a cold image, and it makes me that type of a cool guy everyone’s intimidated with. Ask Yanjun, he was terrified when he first saw me!”

“But here, I can’t show you how much you meant to me. You know how awkward I am. Hence I am still asking myself why are you even dating me”

You laughed a little making him smile in process

“I didn’t want you to know that my songs are about you because you made me flustered okay. It makes me seems soft and cute”

“But also”, he took your hand. Slowly holding it in a soft manner as he talks.

“Also. The way your eyes lit up when you hear it for the first time, it’s precious. Because you sincerely like my songs not because knowing it’s about you.”

“You like my songs because you relate to it. You know what I was trying to point out in every lines, every lyrics. You know how much my hardship is to finish one damn song”

“But most of all”, he smiled softly at you. So fond knowing he could be so drown into you, he doesn’t even care if Xiaogui came in with a Huba costume just to piss him all.

“Most of all, you like my songs because it has the essence of me. Because that’s song is not just about you, it’s about us”

You smiled in the process. Sure Xingjie isn’t the most lovey dovey boyfriend ever. And sure Xingjie gets really awkward if he shows affection not just to you, but to everyone.

But seeing him cracking open a bigger hole sent you more wave of relief. You smiled wider at Xingjie’s flustered self.

“Thank you. Thank your for being my everything, Xingjie”

You both had to admit it, being so drawn in love wasn’t so bad. Because both of you know, whatever that will happen in the future may determine how strong your relationship will be.

Maybe this can reassure you. His small confession to you, a secret between two. Both of you knew.

Xingjie closed the gap between you and him, hands on your waist. Smiling, he leans down slowly.

How much you mean to him, and how terrified he will be if he lose you.

You closed your eyes as he closed his, closing the gap. The proximity of your’s and his face was so small, a nudge can help both of you fasten the pase.

“Oh can you both just please hurry up!”, eye wide open, both of you spun around staring in horror. Sitting right in front of you was Xiaogui, eating his banana with an irritated expression on.

“I swear, this is worse than waiting for Zhangjing succeeding on his diet! Like what is wrong with-“, you swore you’ve never seen Xingjie so pissed before.

He launches himself on Xiaogui, swearing to himself to murder the kid. You laughed.

Zhu XingJie, Huba. The man with many talents from singing, rapping, dancing, until doing magic. The man who caught China’s attention after they slept at him for god knows how long. The man who owns your heart.

And you know, both of you are drowned in each other’s love to even think of breaking up

Took 40 minutes to finish that chapter of guardian in my print book ToT so like 10 pages.

Upside: that’s without a dictionary or any word lookup (the completely unknown words are obvious - I need to look up those Hanzi they’re new I should just like underline them or something)

Eh: again, I read the translation a week or so ago so having context helped a LOT with figuring out any unknown words spelled with Hanzi I know. I’m sure going in blind trying to read like Can Ci Pin with no prior context I’d still drown. (However after reading a translation first? Maybe all the priest novels I got might be doable). What I do like is that with this context, I can read it the way I wanted to (exceptions being 1-2 unknown words a page). I can actually read for details, actually enjoy the sentences and meanings and descriptions. (And I’m sure I will be able to more in a year but just... this was basically the “at minimum dream goal” I had when I started learning... which I thought would take 4 years.. so I am cool with managing to do it earlier than expected if it means I just gotta have read the translations. Also? A nice possible benefit is since words are pretty easy to pick up from the context, hopefully learning these words will help me read some other priest novels a bit.

Interesting: the print novel HAS extra scenes. I mentioned this before (also it has edited scenes with different wording, meaning it does not match word to word for Avenuex’s audiobook which follows the webnovel). I also have bad memory so combine only my blurry memory of the translation chapter with scenes changed and scenes added and every page still has some surprises. This chapter featured a bit more discussion on the guardian order/token then I remember happening this early (it’s the chapter Li qian jumps, they mention the guardian order in the hall in the building - da Qing and zhao yunlan talk about it for maybe 2 pages). Every extra scene is interesting I mean 1. Because I’ve never seen it lol in the webnovel or translation. 2. Because being able to read it really makes me feel like I’m achieving what I wanted when I wanted to read the book way back when I first watched guardian lol. 3. Most fun is me wondering why priest decided to make some changes for the print novel! Like Zhu Hong is introduced earlier and differently in a way that matches the show, in the print novel - but in the webnovel she’s introduced later and some random ghost makes guo changcheng faint in the SID. Now this earlier guardian order scene (if it’s not my bad memory just forgetting it in the eng translation lol) means priest might have decided to scatter more info about it earlier on, and to hint maybe at zhao yunlan being Kunlun earlier. I wonder if more added detail like this will continue. Another scene change - unless the eng translator just CUT out sentences - is that when Shen wei is introduced in the book, zhao Yunlan considers his beauty and appearance. Also it matches up to the show intro as far as petting the cat and their name convo. I don’t remember the webnovel eng translation waxing poetic about Shen Wei’s beauty in that intro scene.

Also interesting: back when I’d extensively read more, what I liked was how when I couldn’t look up words I really tested how much I Actually knew and Actually remembered. Because I had to make my mind remember. I also had to work harder to recognize metaphors, idioms, word boundaries, recognize when it’s one word or 2, etc. Because I don’t have a button to click that automatically sorts those. Also with metaphors and idioms etc I actually think through them and if they make sense I understand them (versus when I read in Pleco and look them up it’s more like me memorizing a word block means “tired” and not the actual phrasing). Also with words - when I figure out a word in extensive reading it’s a more natural process of me going “these Hanzi word parts combine and mean this” and if it’s logical it’s apparent why because my brain had to block them together as a new word to understand the sentence (and had to figure out the meaning of the new word). Again, in Pleco I could just click the word for clock-needle but seeing it and figuring it out myself makes it much easier to remember. Related - sometimes made up words are Easier to figure out in extensive reading. In Pleco, reading hanshe, the word 界结 comes up a lot meaning like a boundary (it’s a spell Xiaoge puts up to protect the hanshe from spirits). I believe it also comes up in love and redemption as the barrier protecting the bottle and the lake in the opening eps? It’s not a word in Pleco’s dictionary but in context and with those Hanzi it makes sense. Guardian has words that might be real or might be terms to describe zhao Yunlan’s magic stuff, but the key point is reading and figuring out the meaning myself tends to make more sense than if I run into them in Pleco, click definitions that make sense but not together as one word and skip the obvious of noticing and trying to understand before I looked it up. Then related to these points? Reading Extensively now that I read the translation first? Makes this process all way funner to me. Because now I can do it will all sentences, all words. I don’t find any paragraph or sentence so difficult I have to skim over it and give up figuring out Anything beyond maybe a phrase or word (whereas in like month 8 that was what I had to do a ton with MoDu and i was lucky if I grasped the overall meaning of a paragraph from the scraps of parts of sentences I could figure out). So like.. it’s a more complete reading and figuring out experience? Compared to before where I had lots of like blank spaces where I had no idea what to do with certain regions. Learning more Hanzi has likely also helped a lot. Like I said in guardian I’m running into 1-2 unknown Hanzi a page rn, whereas in mo du I probably knew 500 Hanzi total? Maybe 1000? Idk it was a low enough number every paragraph had several unknowns at least. Compared to now, especially with prior context from the translation (so if I only vaguely recall a Hanzi and haven’t learned it well yet, I can still guess the realm of its meaning from context) it’s going a lot smoother.

Downside: wow is that a long time ;-; I think 5 pages took me 20 minutes? It was pretty brutally slow. Although on the upside IF print pages correlate in length the way I think they do, 20-30 minutes was how long 20 digital pages was taking me for 天涯客 in Pleco with a click dictionary looking up words. And I think priest chapters are generally like 5 print pages in the webnovel chapter lengths? Because that’s like the translations general page length for chapters? But then my print chinese copy combines some chapters so like the chapter I just read was 25 print pages total ;-; anyway my... point... is just that if 5 pages is taking me around 20-30 minutes that’s pretty normal for me and a priest novel chapter so. On the upside it’s not taking much slower to read print pages compared to in Pleco (provided I have context from seeing a translation at some point). I remember the 5 page chapters in this book took me 20 minutes last time I read one of the short ones? So that’s pretty comparable to my digital reading speed. Which is still pretty slow for priest novels... but much better than the much worse time I was taking before I tried reading After seeing a translation lol

Art, science come together in UIC minor

Undergraduate students at the University of Illinois at Chicago are studying life science visualization, or Life Sci Viz, thanks to a minor launched last year by the College of Applied Health Sciences. The new minor brings together biological and physical sciences, engineering, art and health care fields to teach students how to visualize science.

While the college’s Biomedical Visualization Graduate Program — one of only four accredited medical illustration programs in North America — was established nearly 100 years ago, the minor launched just one year ago in January 2019. UIC’s Samantha Bond is overseeing the minor, which she said was developed to meet student demand.

“It was heartbreaking to see how often undergraduate students felt they had to pick between the arts and the sciences,” said Bond, clinical assistant professor of biomedical and health information sciences and physical therapy. “We developed this program so that students from any discipline can learn the skills needed to collaborate with others and to produce accurate, eye-catching creative work that represents topics in science.”

The courses for the Life Sci Viz minor are open to any student as long as prerequisites are met.

Three Life Sci Viz students share how the Life Sci Viz minor helped them refined their career goals:

Alexandra Mangam, senior in biological science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

“Quite honestly, for me, the thought of working in a research lab, pipetting for the rest of my life, was scary. Not everyone is meant for research, and I didn’t feel prepared for the future,” Mangam said.

“During my freshmen year, my mentor was an anaplastologist that constructed facial prosthetics for patients. She integrated a lot of fine arts into her job – hand-painting layers of skin, veins and capillaries on prostheses to exactly match how they look on the patient. I thought it was really cool.

“When UIC introduced the Life Sci Viz minor program, I had to try it. It was so interesting learning the art side. I was always very visual with my learning so, in retrospect, it now seems natural to gravitate towards a biomedical visualization career.

“I have finished the minor and am still taking classes because I love it. I’ve grown as an artist, a scientist and as a person. I have a future that I’m looking forward to.”

Victoria Venice Goite, sophomore in fine arts in the College of Architecture, Design, and the Arts

“Many people in my family have a medical background and I was heavily influenced by them,” Goite said. “In my culture, I believe there is this pressure to pursue scientific fields. I feel that people who are actually passionate about art are afraid to show that side. As much as I was interested in science, I loved art and believed in making my own path. So, I took as many AP art classes in high school to advance my artistic skills. Still, I wanted to combine art and science so I researched this Life Sci Viz minor.

“People don’t realize that art itself is not just painting, sitting and drawing. It’s about visualization and making something minuscule in your life, like a leaf, and giving it life through your eyes. Science heavily relies on observations and explanations — if you want to explain your findings, put figures in a textbook or even give an informational pamphlet to patients, you have to put creative thought into what you’re doing.

“The Life Sci Viz minor is providing me a solid foundation in both art and science. It gives me the security that I won’t have to choose between earning money and being a creative person. If you are passionate about art and science and haven’t found that middle ground, this is a great place to go.”

Bendita Qian, senior in integrated health studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

“When I came to UIC, I was a pre-med undeclared major and I was struggling in the science classes,” Qian said. “Those classes didn’t interest me. So, I decided to major in integrated health, which also incorporates the social sciences. Then UIC came out with the Life Sci Viz minor and I found it interesting because it would give me the opportunity to do something science-related that still integrated the arts.

“Art is an excellent form of communication and is a very good bridge for scientists to convey the information that they research and discover. If you have an artist serve as the middle ground, they can disseminate it in a way people can understand it and feel comfortable reading it. This could also help reduce the stigma of arts being a lower status than science and technology fields.”

“This minor really allows students to experience something holistic. Students learn to approach the sciences or arts from a different perspective. In a number of scientific fields, many factors in the arts, creativity and communication are vital in conducting meaningful research. Because we have so much accessible content in the world now, it can overwhelm people with cognitive burden. It’s more important than ever as illustrators to create work that is beautiful, accurate and easy to understand. In the process, I believe our contributions will validate the inclusion of art in the process of impactful scientific discovery.”

Facebook’s decisive no to the crypto-industry left chaos and mayhem in its wake as the news reverberated through the ears of unsuspecting and unprepared crypto enthusiasts on that cold, cold morning on January the 30th:

All ads “promoting financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings, and cryptocurrency” were now a no-show.

Facebook is one of the most prominent social portals around. We would probably say the most prominent and we wouldn’t be far off the truth. Facebook runs tons of services, allows us to keep in touch with our nearest and dearest, proudly boast our achievements in a really casual way, and delivers touching recollections of our time together with friends. So it is understandable that its ads section would be a very attractive destination for all kinds of companies, and this includes crypto-related companies, which are generally known to be very industrious on a lot of levels. Facebook banned crypto-advertising in January for the fear of scams of all sorts. It is true, a lion’s share of all ICOs are fake. But is a blanket ban really an answer?

How does banning blankets help?

Just kidding, we know you know what a blanket ban is. Tarring everyone with the same brush is never a good idea, so why Google, Instagram, Audience Network, Twitter, and Facebook have gone for a blanket ban on all crypto ads is a difficult question.

Mark Zuckerberg himself had pointed out crypto-technologies could be useful:

“There are important counter-trends to this, like encryption and cryptocurrency, that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people’s hands. I’m interested to go deeper and study the positive and negative aspects of these technologies, and how best to use them in our services.”

Then there was the ban, as Facebook put it because they were not entirely sure all of the people behind the ads operated on good faith. That, understandably, was met with similar enthusiasm to Trump getting elected in the US at the time, with reactions ranging from despair and open hostility to badly disguised skepticism:

“This policy will definitely protect people from the scams of predatory projects. However, announcing an “intentionally broad” policy is always the easiest way and not necessarily the best route for technology development. I don’t believe that banning e-commerce ads just because people face the risk of buying counterfeited products is a good idea.”

Jack Dorsey, the CEO and co-founder of Twitter, had also expressed an opinion that Bitcoin will be the prime currency of the future:

“The world ultimately will have a single currency, the internet will have a single currency. I personally believe that it will be bitcoin…It’s slow and it’s costly, but as more and more people have it, those things go away. There are newer technologies that build off of blockchain and make it more approachable.”

With opinions so divided, we did think there was something quite paradoxical to the story to begin with. It logically followed, then, that there would be a reversal of the ban, and, just as we said there would be, it followed.

So what actually happened?

Was it the awesome might of blockchain that became so evident Facebook could no longer ignore it? Was it the money? Users seem to think that with declining numbers Facebook is desperate and needs the money it can make on crypto ads.

The issue, however, seems to run a little deeper, if you take a closer look at the statement by Product Management Director Rob Leanthern, which includes an intention to “ revisit this policy and how we enforce it as our signals improve.”

We think it is possible that in light of the recent events and the news of blockchain being adopted in many more practices around the world Facebook may have caught a whiff of the fact that it is actually a sound technology that can be trusted, and updated its decision.

Making decisions, getting user feedback, and then updating your decision is a completely normal process. The Japanese process of “kaizen” involves making changes, getting feedback, and improving based on that feedback, which is probably the reason why they have the technology that is good 10 years ahead of the planet and 100GBps wireless internet speed while we often feel our local Internet provider still favors dial-up modems.

All in all, it is possible Facebook is coming to its senses. We certainly hope it will go all the way and give us back the intuitive interface reminiscent of the days Facebook was easy/possible to use.

Finding Utility Over Security: The Difference Between ICO Coins

ICOs’ move towards security tokens puts them in the regulatory firing line, but it can often be avoided

Startup fundraising, in the traditional VC methodology, was flipped on its head in 2017 when a boom in ICO creation saw hundreds of companies forming on the Blockchain with its attached digital currency being born in the form of an investable token. However, this crowdfunding platform which exploded at a rapid rate has finally been hauled in by regulators and authorities who have noticed a few worrying trends. Bodies like the SEC have had a closer look at the tokens coming out of ICOs and in most cases declared them securities.

Suddenly, what is essentially an attempt to fundraise is subject to federal laws and the company, which is supposedly trying to create something innovative with the help of Blockchain technology, is expanding vast amounts of energy just trying to be by the books. But, there is a way around this. Not all tokens being developed off the Blockchain need to be of a nature that leads them to being classed as securities. There are a few other types of tokens that can be built off the Blockchain, including utility tokens.

While there are more than just two types of tokens, including equity, work, share-like and asset-backed, it is important to hone in on two types that can be used to define a new token coming through an ICO- the utility and the security token. In understanding the difference between the two, ICOs can choose a direction that can work better for them on a path of least regulation.

Securities Token

Towards the end of July last year, the SEC, on catching up to the ICO craze, dealt a telling blow to ICO regulation going forward. Looking back at the DAO tokens from 2016, the SEC declared that ICO tokens may be securities and subject to federal securities laws.

It was never intended for ICO tokens to be securities, but SEC chairman Jay Clayton noted that every ICO token the SEC has seen so far is considered a security and explained that if a crypto-asset issued by a company increases in value over time depending on the performance of the company, it is considered a security. “You can call it a coin, but if it functions like a security, it’s a security.” He added:

“Prospective purchasers are being sold on the potential for tokens to increase in value, with the ability to lock in those increases by reselling the tokens on a secondary market or to otherwise profit from the tokens based on the efforts of others. These are key hallmarks of a security and a securities offering.”

So, by definition, a security token can be found by employing the Howey Test. This test seeks to find if a token has the following attributes- does it offer an opportunity to contribute money and to share in the profits of an enterprise managed and partly owned by respondents? And, secondly, does the scheme involve an investment of money in a common enterprise with profits to come solely from the efforts of others?

Clearly, the most common tokens seen coming out of the majority of ICOs fall into this categorization and thus come under federal law.

Utility Tokens

On the flip side, there is another style of token that can serve a role in many cases where security tokens are being sought at the peril of the company insighting the ire of securities regulators. A utility token can be defined “to represent future access to a company’s product or service. The defining characteristic of utility tokens is that they are not designed as investments; if properly structured, this feature exempts utility tokens them from federal laws governing securities.”

There are already some highly successful utility tokens, as Vinny Lingham explains the use of utility tokens for Civic, his identity verification coin. “Civic has created one bln utility tokens that provide access to identity verification-related services in a decentralized, token-based ecosystem,” Ligham wrote on his blog. These tokens represent a unit of account for the network. The bigger the network grows, the more utility in the token, and because the number of tokens is fixed. As the size of the network and transaction volumes within it grows, this will create demand for the tokens.”

As if to highlight the underutilization of utility tokens, it was reported that of 226 ICOs, only 20 are used in the running of their networks, that is to say, they are utility tokens, according to Token Report. Storj is another example of a company that utilizes utility tokens, as their co-founder and chief strategy officer Shawn Wilkinson explains: “The Storj tokens we released allow people to use space on the network. We raised half a million dollars through the token crowdsale, and in 2015.” He adds:

“For many companies, utility appears to be an afterthought, but for a token to be successfully adopted into the community, it is the most critical component. With the amount of tokens on the market today, and new ones being launched every day, it’s clear there is a bubble, though the size of it might be debatable. When the market slows, the tokens that have no utility will ultimately not have any value at all.”

Utility tokens can be further explained as coupons for the company and the service it is developing. A real-world example is something like retailers accepting pre-orders of video games that have not been released. It is a token that differs from the usual ICO token that many are used to, and while it is not a perfect fit for every company, there already have been instances where utility tokens have filled a role in place of security tokens letting the Blockchain solution focus on its primary goal. This was seen with Filecoin which raised $52 mln.

Choosing utility over security

Of course, as easy as it sounds, choosing a utility token over a ‘normal’ security token to avoid the SEC, there is more to it than that. Some companies will rely on the securities nature of their token, but the standing on it is, there are a lot of companies that won’t.

There are an array of different types of utility tokens, each with different characteristics that could encompass an ICOs’ needs. If the company cannot find a place in any of the below categorizations, then they have a case for building a securities token. However, if the token can fall into them, then really, there is no need to create a new native token which could lead them through a regulatory minefield. It is first important to divide tokens into fungible or non-fungible.

Utility fungible and non-fungible tokens

These types of tokens are ones which are simply interchangeable for one another. The fungible nature of it means that the asset, good or token is interchangeable with one of equal value, and it does not matter about its individuality. Gold is often cited as a fungible asset as an ounce of gold, regardless if it is in coins, ingots or dust, is still worth the same thing.

Thus, in terms of a fungible utility token, where they are interchanged for one another, we can see more categorization. For instance, on the Blockchain, there is the possibility for the System Incentive Token, which essentially are used to get people on the network to perform a desired behavior. A company that bases its ICO around this operation does not need a native app and can operate with a host of other tokens.

The same goes for a voter token which is another situation where Blockchain and tokens come into play, but again, there is no need for a native securities style token for this. These governance tokens enable those on the network to vote, and clearly, a utility token is sufficient for this. In a similar vein, membership tokens are also classic examples of utility fungible tokens as again, the token is just being used to access the platform, and utilize the services.

On the other side of assets, a non-fungible item is one that is unique, such as land, or in the Blockchain space- CryptoKitties.Utility Non-Fungible Tokens are thus mostly used to determine ownership of a specific token or digital asset. So, with a number of ICOs, on face value, clearly fitting into the above-mentioned categories, one has to ask why they decided on a native securities-style token which will lead to regulatory pressures?

Beyond the definition

The definitions of security token and utility token, and even the other ones which are a little more niche are still definitions from a pre-Blockchain era.

Dejun Qian, founder of Fusion and the creator of QTUM, which currently sits in the top 20 on Coinmarketcap, explains that tokens are still a very new and unique Idea, and while people try and pigeonhole them, they should really be defined individually.

“The reason people try to figure out if token is a security or a utility is because people are thinking which laws the token needs to be compliant with. When people say that the token is a utility, it means that the token is designed and embedded in the Blockchain infrastructure. Naturally, it can then serve as a very important part in the Blockchain. It is very creative and can then also provide a lot if different opportunities for the Blockchain.”

But in Qian opinion, we should transcend the bold security vs. utility perspective: “On the other side, there is the token which is regarded as a security. We have current laws covering the securities industry, and there are a lot of things we need to comply with, so people think about it in a similar way. I think we need to put more effort on the utility side, and even something else far beyond only security vs. utility. Because from my perspective, tokens are neither security or utility, it is a new thing and we cannot put a new thing in an existing framework, to determine what it is.”
