The enemies of art and of morals, the enemies that is of love, are the same: social convention and neurosis. One may fail to see the individual… because we are ourselves sunk in a social whole which we allow uncritically to determine our reactions, or because we see each other exclusively as so determined. Or we may fail to see the individual because we are completely enclosed in a fantasy world of our own into which we try to draw things from outside, not grasping their reality and independence, making them into dream objects of our own. Soul vs Social Convention
So. Back at it again. I'm finishing up my process of "grieving" the disappointing resolution of The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie. Before I talked about what kind of genre I would place the story in and if it fulfills narrative expectations.
What however made my peace with all of it was the realization that the story consists of two parts, and I only like one of them. One thread is the burgeoning love that brings all six of them together. And the other thread is social convention - what is a partner, what is marriage, what is love supposedly, and what am I to do with my life.
We talk about social convention because society not only provides some answers to these questions, it tends to ingrain them and enforce them. It takes preferred constructs and tells us "This is how you should be. This is how you should think." And the ending is nothing but conventional.
It's 2023, though. I saw actual, real-world young people rather happily extend their relationship to a polyamorous triple, and when I look around the internet they're hardly the only ones. The concept of marriage itself or eternal bliss with one person actually looked like it would go away during the 1990s to 2000s. It certainly made a comeback. But who really expects to live their whole life with one person? At the very least, people think they will try out multiple people and then end up with somebody who stands the test of time. But often enough people cycle through partners instead.
Now, granted, the story takes place in Japan. Social convention has more weight, and at least YouTubers claim that the concept of calling someone who is not married by 25 a "Christmas cake" (which was left out too long) has not yet found its well-deserved end. So, in a product geared at teenagers, maybe it needed to be a safe bet - maybe the heartbreak was even intended? Who knows.
What I do know that the whole story as a journey betrays a different conception of love from where it ends. If you look at second half of first season till the end of second season, you see that the sisters will seek love but also share in each other's happiness and sadness. They make mistakes, especially Ichika, but in principle they all have the potential to share Futaro. And he loves all of them.
When he refuses to decide - that's when he is the last time "like himself." When he boldly declares he loves all of them. I believe him. I believe he loves and cherishes each of them individually and all of them together.
What is love then?
If you love each of them, what is the difference? Sexual attraction, maybe. But that should have been easy to figure out - unless he's kind of into all of them. They are different personalities but same body type, after all. It's not a stretch to believe he could be reasonably attract to any of them.
And do we really believe these sisters could not share that man? They run after each other and spy on their dates, not to spoil them (well, Nino), but to actually help or share in the joy.
But they're each trapped in their belief in convention, and so is the author. Yes, a situation as it played out can happen. But it seems to be simplistic concept of love. Romantic love is supposedly a different love from... just love. And it's supposedly something that you just know somewhere.
And sometimes that may be true, and sometimes not.
What I fault the story for is telling the story of the higher love, the one that shares and cherishes and then supplant it with a story of selfishness and hurt. And maybe many people can not allow for anything else, making this a safe bet. And sadly, maybe, it was money in the bank to rile people's emotions up and give them a forced, late conclusion so everybody stays until the end.
I'm not saying polyamory is better. I'm saying it really could have worked here. That's what makes the first half of the movie still work, and then all the lines are drawn again, roll the conventional ending. And it feels just flat in comparison.
Yes, the sisters join together to support Yotsuba. But they're also locked out now. We have been told what love is and has to be - decisive, binary, conventional. And if you stick together, it has to be forever. I think the six of them together could have made a hell of a team to face life together while continuing to grow and trying to make their individual dreams happen.
My new head canon.
PS - this is by the way exactly expressed in an exchange between Yotsuba and Futaro. She asks if this scenario was possible. And he says some forms of happiness come at the expense of someone else's. His head example is who scores highest in an exam. But love isn't a national final exam. I don't think somebody's love has to be at the expense of somebody else. That's where the trap lies convention set.

A Love Story by James R. Coggins
A Love Story by James R. Coggins
Sixth and Last in a Series The marriage of Ruth and Boaz described in the Old Testament book of Ruth was not the usual love story. They got married following a social convention of obligation and need, not romance. They had not known each other for long. What did Boaz know about Ruth? He knew she had shown love and loyalty to Naomi, risking her own future happiness to care for her aging…

The IOF killed yet another journalist while they're on trial for genocide. They're absolute monsters.
Journalists are protected under international laws (especially under areas of "armed conflict" and since the western world/media keeps calling this a "war" [even though this is a genocide, not a war] -that the IOF has been continuously breaking Geneva Conventions and has been committing war crimes because journalists in "war zones must be treated as civilians and protected as such"). The IOF has murdered over 100 of them -these are people with livelihoods, dreams, ambitions, hobbies, families, and friends, and so much more.
I read a post earlier that when Saudia Arabia murdered one journalist back in 2018 (his name was Jamal Khashoggi) there was global outrage -as there should be for MANY reasons whenever a government institution and/or power kills a person whose work is meant to collect information, and to investigate for publication and dissemination to the world -targeting and assassinating speakers and conveyors of news is beyond heinous. But the fact that over 100 PALESTINIAN JOURNALISTS, including their families -have been systemically targeted and killed by the IOF, is despicable. The occupation MUST end and Palestine must be free.
Rest in power and peace, Muhammad.

By the way, lurkers are welcome on my blog<33
Yeah, yeah, Writeblr is a community and all that. But I get it.
Some of us have anxiety disorders. Some of us are (or were once) minors on the internet who had it drilled into us to never make our presence known in online spaces lest we get stalked or groomed.
It's okay if interacting is outside of your comfort zone.
Some of us aren't actually on tumblr enough to make making a Writeblr intro worth it.
Some of us prefer to take a few months, maybe years, observing the community to learn the rules. And let's face it, there is a huge learning curve to Tumblr culture. I came here from Pinterest in like 2018 and hooo boy was it intimidating!
Like, I was that 17 year old pinterest lurker with an anxiety disorder who was taught that internet safety meant "never comment on anything" who took a few years before I felt comfortable enough with tumblr culture to reblog things with tags, let alone make public posts.
So I guess what I am saying is, I can't judge. Because I've been there.
Writeblr is a community. And the community (for me) is the best part. And remember that if you don't contribute to the community you don't get to complain about it either. But this is also a public space. Silent observers are to be expected. And on my blog you are welcome.

before the fashion history fandom lays into a period drama for not having historically accurate costuming they should maybe ask themselves if they believe the only point of costuming in a period piece is accuracy or if there are maybe other concerns in fiction

I made a website!

https://www.chocodile.net
At present, it's basically just a big fancy "about" section with a small portfolio, but I have vague plans to maybe do an RSS art feed and maybe make some goofy retro Web 2.0 JavaScript toys (dressup dolls, personality quizzes, etc) like I built for the websites I made when I was 13. Eventually.

I got a wee little webring banner, too. You can find the code for it on my site... lemme know if you wanna trade webring links.

a criticism that i absolutely despise about thirteen is the "she's socially awkward, less confident, and more nervous about coming off as weird and this is out of character" take. because this ties into one of her defining character traits as an incarnation. yes all the doctors previous have been strange and offputting to some degree and have mainly not cared about coming off that way (save for ten, who mostly does want to come off as a friendly affable dude and asks if he's being rude sometimes but doesn't have moments where he's apologetic about his oddness in itself). but for thirteen her whole deal is that after twelve's dying wish was basically "ALWAYS BE NICE TO PEOPLE NO MATTER HOW MUCH ETERNAL RAGE AND SADNESS YOU KEEP IN YOUR SOUL" she tries to hide/repress any negative, less "presentable" sides of her from her close friends even when they can tell she's trying to hide it and are attempting to offer emotional support. she tries to be conscious of how she comes off after like, centuries of not really giving a fuck about this. and she clearly struggles with it and this is why she feels so fish-out-of-water in multiple different ways. it's not out of nowhere nor is it ooc (especially bc it was something you saw a little bit of with ten)

All Zims with chronic pain (especially mine) get to bite people during pain episodes without consequences.
In fact, if they bite a Dib they will get a little treat.
