happy disability pride month to disabled folks who were medically neglected as children.
happy disability pride month to people who were disabled as kids, but told their disabilities weren't "really disabling" or enough to stop them from reaching their "potential".
happy disability pride month to people who were never taken to the doctor as kids, never given adequate care for their disabilities (even when it was accessible).
happy disability pride month to people who were only taught about their disabilities as a method of fear mongering. "that kid over there, who obviously has it worse? that could be you."
happy disability pride month to people who were told as children that it was their own fault they were disabled.
happy disability pride month to the people who sat alone in the nurse's office at school when their disability flared.
happy disability pride month to the people who could have had a wildly better quality of life as children, if only their guardians had bothered to care.

Im a 19 year old failure.
Abused and taken advantage of as a kid.
My only parent, my father, loves me between his deployments as long as I continued being a straight A girly girl.
The stems mothers that cycled through our home either drank their hearts away trying to get close to my father or abused me and my brother out of frustration when they couldn’t.
In sophomore year I got my first ever “bad grade” a B, my father took me to get tested for autism. I was not autistic, I was fully capable. I feel sick to my stomach seeing how my dad scheduled such a harsh appointment just to “prove a point” that studying is important.
I’ve never been smart enough, thin enough, supportive enough, happy enough, sad enough, angry enough, or lovey enough. If I feel my emotions rawly I am dramatic, if I support you through your feelings successfully you tell me to take time to myself. To talk to you. But when I do you drown me in your every day happenings, while I fester with mine.
I am used and hurt by the men who walk into my life and promise to love me and keep me safe forever, for the “small exchange” of my body. I’m tried, sick, and hurt.
Now I sit with the broken foot that he trampled on that day, missing everything he was because my brain simply cannot correlate the person you were that day with the one that my heart tears for by the minutes of every future hour.
I had so much potential. My gpa had colleges salivating, it had my father introducing me to his world of sophisticated employees and friends who had genius children. Despite all this unfairness I still carry my fathers weight.
Because my big brother was a crackhead, I must take the place of the oldest in our family and restore “true honor” to our immigrated bloodline. Because my father became a doctor I must become something better, research something more significant, aid in a higher purpose. But what do u even want. I fin myself reading of helium asyohicuation as a pass time. I’m 19 and I already can barely make rent this month because my ex left me after abusing me, the cops took him away and even though he’s on bail for first and second degree assault towards me he hasn’t even bothered to message me. So here I am in my apartment, alone, broken foot, cold, and every step I take reminding me of how you were someone I never could’ve guessed you’d be.
Now I smoke weed every minute of every day or I find myself feeling too much. I don’t know what it feels like to not be high anymore. My tolerance is sky high. If I drink and smoke enough, I can feel you on my body. I can feel you in my house. In my skin. But now I’m just alone, and I’m running out of substances to forget you; even though they emend me of you so much at the same time. It’s all so counter intuitive. My father and family thinks I got it all down pad lock though. Your family thinks I’m “so strong” for dealing with you hurting and abusing me while managing this apartment by myself and going to school. The truth is I’ve only gone to class once this semester and I’m falling apart. I’m self harming. I’m considering a plan to sleep forever. I’m trying to find happiness in my two cats, because it’s all I have left that makes me smile. It’s all that keeps me to this earth.
I crave you security and warmth. But I know you just hurt me. And after moving from my fathers house, my your family house, to the apartment with you, and ending up by myself, I realize it’s either life or death for me.
Either I become the prettiest, most successful strong woman there is, or I’m swallowing down gas in hopes of a peaceful asphyxiation.

Fic: Three Weird Sisters
Title: Three Weird Sisters
Author: Aenaria
Rating: G
prompt filled: Supernatural Family
Characters: Darcy Lewis, Jane Foster, Betty Ross
Tags/warnings: witches AU, first meetings
Summary: The origin of the Culver Coven.
There are a few other ficlets in this universe floating around my tumblr somewhere, but you don’t need to find them to understand this. All you need to know is that Darcy and Jane are both witches in this universe who met long before Darcy’s internship. As for the rest of it? Well, this is an origin story…
Yet again, another fill for the @darcylewisbingohq‘s weekly challenge!
Tumblr media
“All I’m saying is that political science isn’t actual hard science.”
Darcy rolls her eyes as they walk down one of the halls in the sciences building. “Never change, Jane.” She’s heard the rant about the differences between hard and soft sciences from Jane long before she’d even decided to apply to Culver. Which is ironic as all hell coming from someone who grew up in the hidden world of the witches just like Darcy did. But ever since she first met Jane as an impressionable pre-teen she’s always had her head in the stars instead of firmly earthbound like the rest of the witches they know. “Besides, I don’t know if I’m going to stick with it. I just…didn’t want to leave a giant blank spot on my application.”
Jane frowns. “You know you don’t have to--”
“I know, I know, I don't have to declare a major until the end of Sophomore year. It just bothered me.”
“Well, you’ve got time to figure it out.” Jane comes to a stop in front of a metal door with a window. She knocks quickly and without waiting for an answer, pushes her way inside. Darcy just shrugs and follows after her, hoping that Jane isn’t leading her somewhere they’re not supposed to be.
It wouldn’t be the first time. They’re family, after all, and ever since she was a kid Darcy’s trusted Jane to keep her safe, even if Jane’s sense of self preservation was sometimes lacking.
Instead, there’s just a woman there behind a microscope, a bit older than Jane but still youthful enough to be mistaken for one of the students at the university. “I thought you were coming here right away,” she says in a soft voice, not looking up from the microscope, “not taking a detour through half the campus.”
“Ha ha,” Jane shoots back. “Darcy, this is Doctor Betty Ross, a professor of cellular biology here. Betty, this is the Darcy I was telling you about.”
Darcy waves awkwardly. Nothing like being put on the spot, even though she gets a decidedly good vibe off of Betty. “Hello.”
“Nice to meet you,” Betty replies, looking up at her with bright blue eyes, something behind them that makes Darcy pause for just a brief moment. She then glances over at Jane. “She’s another one like us, isn’t she?”
Ahh. Another witch. No wonder Betty felt comfortable to be around. Witches always know their own in some sort of a way.
“Exactly,” Jane confirms. “And we could use a coven here on campus.”
“You’re not wrong. There’s a lot of bad energy that needs to be cleared out of this place, no thanks to my father.”
“Why? What happened?” Darcy blurts out.
Betty just shakes her head with a smile that looks more sad than anything else. “Let’s go get some coffee first. It’s a long, long story.”

Hello, I saw that you said you have received a set date for your gender surgery, and I’m guessing you have been on testosterone for a little while now. I’m in a dangerous situation and I can’t have trans things in my search history while I live with my parents, so I was just wondering if I could ask you some questions? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. Does a doctor have to prescribe me testosterone or can I get it at a store or online? Are there pill options or is injection the only way (hate hate HATE needles)? How often do you take testosterone and does the bottle have to be refrigerated like some medicines (can’t put it in the refrigerator)? I’ve heard the effects are gradual, is it so gradual that my parents won’t notice after 2 years of taking hormones (I’ll probably move out in 2 years after my sophomore year of college)? Sorry to bother you and thank you for your time
DISCLAIMER I AM NOT A DOCTOR ALL OF THIS IS JUST MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Alright sorry it's taken me so long to reply I've been sick and/or busy x_x but!
I've been on T since 2016 so you have guessed correctly!
Testosterone is a controlled substance. It is not the same as estrogen. You technically can get Testosterone off the black market but I really really REALLY recommend going through a doctor and getting a prescription for it. For a few reasons:
Too much testosterone can make you sick and/or it can convert to estrogen and actually be counterproductive to your transition.
If you get something off the black market you have no guarantee of its quality or the amount of testosterone per mg of the solution. So even if you know the best dose for yourself you wont be able know for sure what amount you are giving yourself.
As far as i know you cannot check your own testosterone levels. You need to get a blood draw once every 3 months until your t levels are stable and at the level you want it at. Then it's once every 6 months.
There are a few options. There's andro gel, injections, patches, and an implant. There is no pill.
I was on the gel but it wasnt able to get my t level high enough so I'm back on injections.
My roommate did the patches but they left very bright red rashes so he wasnt on them long enough to know how well they worked.
And the implant is pellets that are put under ur skin. Once they are in the dose cannot be adjusted so i dont recommend these for when ur starting off.
EDIT TO ADD: the gel is once a day. You put it on in the morning and you can't wash it off until at least 4 hours later. Important to know is no one can touch the application site. Most doctors who work with trans people will have you do ur injection once a week (why i call tuesdays testosterone tuesdays!). Some endocrinologists who mostly work with cis people who need hormones for whatever reason will make you do it once every 2 weeks. That creates higher highs and lower lows in ur testosterone level. Good luck explaining that to them tho 🙄 a lot of endocrinologists are arrogant assholes who wont listen to you about much of anything, in my experience anyway "/
Honestly i recommend injections. Yeah it sucks but you can do inter-muscular (IM) or subcutaneous (sub-q) injections. The sub-q injections are a lot easier and way less painful that IM injections. And honestly IM isn't really THAT painful.
No form of testosterone needs to be refrigerated. My gel came in a medium sized bottle with a pump. And my injections come in a very small vile.
Now okay this is the tricky question. I started my transitioned while still living with my parents. I was not out to them. I made a calculated ricked based on what i know of my parents and it worked out in my favor. If they noticed they never said anything.
The 1st noticeable thing would be your voice changing. I played it off as a sore throat (and honestly my throat was sore from the strain). I talked around them everyday so the change would be gradual to them. It worked for me but i also know my parents are the type to bottle it up and never acknowledge anything they dont like.
My facial hair didn't get noticeably dark or thicker than it already was for a year or two so i didn't have to worry about that.
I was already pretty butch so that also worked in my favor. If you already have a masculine "daughter" what's a little more masculinity 🤷 and even tho my parents are transphobic they are fairly relaxed about gender presentation overall. Like both my brothers have longer hair than me right now. And i can get away with openly shopping in the men's sections.
So I'm proof that you can transition without ur dumb parents coming at you about it. But that's my parents. I dont know about your parents.
Plus your changes may happen faster than mine did. It's hard to say.
But if ur serious about transitioning while this young, if you are USAmerican do not use your parent's insurance. They will get, in the mail, an "explanation of benefits" that will outline what the insurance paid for. The insurance company will out you.
Depending on where you live there might be low income clinics that can help you. Or planned parenthood is decently affordable and they wont send any outstanding bills to debt collectors. If you live in the midwest DM and i can maybe help you find a place.
I paid for my testosterone prescription out of pocket for many years and at the Walmart pharmacy it was about 40 dollars a month.
And remember do not rush ur transition and put urself in danger. A dead person cannot transition. You can always wait a couple years and transition later.

wait a minute, is eduardo ‘eddie’ hasan-vidal still in town? i thought i saw a flash of (heavy boots, the smell of fabric softener, an abandoned cup of coffee in the morning)! last i heard they were working as a(n) nurse and paramedic. when it’s the (aquarius)’s birthday on 02/14. i forget that they’re detached and celebrate that they’re reliable. i hear late night talking by harry styles every time i think of them.  ⌠taylor zakhar perez, 27, cis male, he/him ⌡
A B O U T tw: abortion mention
he’s a local. been here since he was born, and only left for college. his family is very steady on the middle class, didn’t have much of a hardship growing up and even inherited the old family car when he turned 17.
he has a sister that’s one year older than him, but he hasn’t seen her in almost ten years. she turned eighteen and left town to never go back, which left him as the sole child of a family that put too many expectations on their children.
eddie had always been a good kid, barely ever got in big trouble. he went through the rites of passage, being caught drunk (multiple times), crashed the car (barely made a scratch), aside from getting caught inside of it with a girl (neither of them had their tops on). his sister went through all of these, and more. way more.
after eddie’s sister left home, all his parents’ hopes and dreams were placed onto him. his father wanted him to be a doctor, so he said goodbye to his dreams of star athlete or music star (his two hobbies), and ended up going to the best college they could afford.
it was alright by eddie. he made friends easily, and of course didn’t take long before he found a girlfriend- the cutest girl he had ever seen, but perhaps the craziest one - and he fell head over heels for her.
by sophomore year, they had been together for about eight months, when she came to his dorm on a thursday night with her eyes red and swollen. she was pregnant. it took eddie by surprise, because he was sure he had been careful every single time, but told her he would be there. he was scared to death, but he had been well educated, and even after a couple days the idea of being a father felt... compelling. even exciting.
*tw* this girl disappeared for three days only to call him early morning to pick her up at planned parenthood. eddie drove as fast as he could- thought something bad had happened, but when he finally asked she simply said she got rid of it. “what?” “you heard me.” he let it happen. it was her choice after all, but a part of him was mourning something, but he wasn’t going to let it come between them.
a couple months later, he found out about her cheating on him during more than half of their relationship, the pregnancy probably being this guy’s doing. it had to be, but he didn’t reproach it. he simply broke up with her. she made a scandal, yelled, cried and by the end of the week she had started a rumor about him forcing her to have an abortion. *tw over*
eddie’s life in college completely changed. he was stared at in the hallways, even teachers had somehow taken a stand against him no matter how hard he tried to deny it and tell the truth. he didn’t bother to finish the semester- packed all his stuff and drove back home.
he became the family’s disappointment. specially because he didn’t care to explain what had actually happened. they were far too conservative and religious to even touch those subjects. he simply said it was not for him, and he would find a job in town.
eddie has worked in every single business in town in the past eight years. but somewhere about three years ago, he decided to use what he had learned in med school for something, and took several courses to become a paramedic. he decided it was not too bad of a future to help people after all, and he found driving the ambulance pretty damn fun.
he lives by himself with his dog- an old schnauzer that whines and barks way more than eddie speaks to him. but it’s okay. he fills up the empty space most of the time.
C O N N E C T I O N S...
high school and life long friends. friends of his sister. hook ups, flings and exes from the past  hook ups, flings and people he flirts with nowadays. friends from the hospital people he sees at the hospital way too much his partner in the ambulance- basically best pal nowadays. little sibling-esque kind of connection and many more......

Illogical Reasoning Chapter 5: The Library
Hello again folks! Let me know what you think, and I hope you like the chapter!
Summary:  Nina and Will Holmes have lived in Beacon Hills, California, for a little over a year by the start of their sophomore year of high school. In their time in the small town, Beacon Hills has always been quiet and boring. On the first day of school, the lower half of a Jane Doe is found in the woods; a Jane Doe that only Nina and Will seem to believe was murdered. Per their mother Imogen’s pleas, the twins agree to stick to the sidelines and let the police do their job, but it’s hard to do when every new development drags them closer and closer to the center of this case.
Ao3 | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6
Nina spent plenty of nights in hospitals for her migraines. Her first week in Beacon Hills was spent at the hospital for the unrelenting stabbing in the back of her head, and she was in and out of the examination room for the past year and a half. In London, it was a similar story.
 Suffice to say, she was familiar with useless doctors.
 “Did you do your residency online?” She glared at the doctor she didn’t bother learning the name of as he tried to prescribe her sumatriptan. “If you could actually read, sumatriptan made my migraines worse. It’s in my file.”
 He forced a smile. “I must have missed that.”
 “I told you the birth control is working, last night’s episode was due to stress and lack of sleep.”
 “And the lack of sleep was because of?”
 Witnessing a dead human being and an animal getting shot right in front of her in the span of just twenty-four hours. “More stress.”
 He shook his head in disappointment, as though she just said she stayed awake for fun. “You told the nurse that was with you overnight that this was the worst migraine you’ve ever had. How would you rate it on a scale of one to ten?”
 “In comparison to what I’m used to or independently?”
 “In comparison.”
 “Fifteen.”
 He almost scoffed. “On a scale of one to ten, Miss Holmes.”
 She continued to stare at him blankly. “Fifteen.”
 He let out a long sigh. “And independently? On a scale of one to ten, please.”
 “Twenty.”
 Setting his clipboard down, the doctor stared at her, deadpan. “You stayed conscious.”
 “Barely,” She gritted out.
 “A ten is barely staying conscious,” He replied. “I don’t appreciate you exaggerating your symptoms in search of pain medication.”
 If only her mother was there to hear that one. She and Will were busy getting Nina’s car from the school, and Jen wasn’t about to just drop him off at the school and trust that he could get it home in one piece by himself. Nina was mentally adding this doctor to the list of the worst ones she’d ever spoken to. “I’m sorry, just how incompetent are you? Or are you so narcissistic that you can’t comprehend anything anyone ever tells you unless it’s your own name?”
 He didn’t try to glare at her, but it was obvious that he was holding back some choice words. Nina wished he would just say them — it might actually make her respect him. Might. “Nurse McCall is your usual attending. I’ll see if she can come in and see you.”
 “Don’t you dare, it’s her day off!” Nina was informed that Melissa called in to make sure Scott was okay, and she was not going to force the poor woman back to the hospital. He rolled his eyes as Nina sat up further in the bed. “Get Doctor Perez if he isn’t busy, he’s been my doctor before, and he actually knows what he’s doing.”
 His eye twitched slightly. “Of course.”
 As he all but stomped out the door, Nina shouted after him. “And learn some bedside manners while you’re at it! Fucking twat.” She fell back into bed, glaring at the ceiling as her anger stirred.
 “Abusing the staff already?” Nina looked up to see Danny in the doorway, holding a to-go cup of coffee in each hand.
 “He deserved it,” Nina grumbled, taking the second coffee from Danny’s outstretched hand once he entered the room.
 Taking the nearby chair, Danny laughed. “I don’t doubt it. He was Jackson’s doctor when he got his shoulder dislocated. He’s hot, though.”
 Nina rolled her eyes. “Is that why you came to visit? To see if he was working today?”
 He tilted his head from one side to the other, pretending to contemplate the reasons. “No, I actually came to see if Nurse O’Donnel was working today. He isn’t, but I figured I’d stick around and see how you’re doing.” Nina snorted, and Danny smiled softly. “Seriously, how are you doing?”
 With a smile, Nina lifted her coffee. “Never better, Daniel.”
 ~~~
 The moment Nina and Jen got back home from the hospital, Nina went to her room and threw herself on her bed. Too many people in the span of just a few days. She needed a social detox. Nina knew she wouldn’t get that until after the sleepover that Lydia strong-armed Allison and Nina into having at Allison’s, but she could get at least some time alone before then.
 At a knock at the door, Nina knew it wouldn’t be any time soon. The knock was soft and unsure. “Come in, Isaac,” Nina called. Sitting up, she watched as the door opened to reveal the boy. He was already in Will’s room when Nina got back with Jen, and a short while after that, the sheriff arrived.
 “Sheriff Stilinski kicked me out so he could get Will’s statement,” Isaac explained, still standing in the doorway. “Can I come in?”
 Nina smiled. “I already told you that you could.”
 “Right.” He let out a small chuckle and entered the room, fully prepared to just stand until Nina told him he could sit wherever he liked. Isaac looked around before pulling out her desk chair and sitting awkwardly. “I know you’re probably tired of this question, but how are you feeling?”
 She was tired of it, but it was hard to be annoyed with Isaac for anything. “Better,” Nina shrugged. “The doctor was a dick, but other than that, the night was fine.” They gave her enough medication to make sure she slept and prescribed her with insomnia medication. It was the same drug and dose as Natalie Martin’s.
 “Good.” He reached up and scratched the back of his neck, peering around the room before his eyes landed on Nina once more. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there.”
 Nina knew he didn’t mean the hospital. “There was nothing you could have done, Isaac. I was already stupid enough to go there and drag Will with me—”
 “You weren’t stupid.” She was surprised by the certainty in his tone. “You thought you were doing something nice.”
 She snorted. “Is that what Will said?” He was pissed at her once she told him why she actually brought him to the school and showed Will the texts. She highly doubted he gave her the benefit of the doubt when relaying what happened to Isaac.
 “Will’s opinion doesn’t matter.” So he was still angry. Good to know. “It’s like that saying, y’know? Hindsight is twenty-twenty. You can’t blame yourself for something you didn’t know was going to happen.”
 Nina chewed the inside of her cheek and turned to look out the window. Maybe not, but she could certainly recognize that she put her own brother in danger. “What did Finstock say about the sudden cancelled practices?” With the school days cancelled, so were all after-school activities.
 Isaac groaned and threw his head back, bringing a smile to Nina’s face. “We have to run enough suicides to cover at least one full practice. He said he’ll be able to tell if we don’t.”
 “Oh, I don’t doubt it. The man’s insane.”
 Laughing, Isaac nodded. “Do you think he’s always been like that, or did teaching completely destroy him?”
 “It has to be genetic,” Nina joked. “Have you heard him talk about his family? The lot of them are nutters.”
 After about ten minutes of Nina and Isaac talking, Sheriff Stilinski and Jen came to Nina’s room for her own statement. Isaac left with a small wave, and the sheriff stood while Jen sat on the edge of Nina’s bed, resting her hand on her daughter’s knee.
 “How are you feeling, Nina?”
 Nina smiled politely. “Better.” Yeah, she was definitely tired of the question. “How’s Stiles?” She was mostly asking to be polite, but she did care. He was a victim too, even if it felt like he and Scott were intentionally keeping information from everyone else.
 Stilinski sighed. “He’s… Stiles. But he’s doing well. As well as he can be, y’know?” Nina and Jen both nodded. “I was hoping you could tell me everything you remember from last night. Will told me you were pretty out of it.”
 “I thought I was dreaming for a few minutes,” Nina confirmed. “I don’t know how valuable my statement will be.”
 “I can’t say it would hold up in court, but anything we can get is useful to the case.”
 She nodded once more. “Of course.” Taking her phone out and pulling up the messages from Scott, she handed it over to the sheriff. “I was trying to force myself to sleep when I got these texts from Scott’s phone. Because I hadn’t slept since Monday at that point, I didn’t trust myself to drive and took Will with me. We saw Stiles and Jackson’s cars in the parking lot, and found Scott, Allison, and Stiles in the foyer. When I showed Scott my messages, he denied sending them. Allison said she also received a message from him that he denied sending.”
 “Do you believe Scott sent the messages?”
 Nina sighed. “I did, at the time. I thought he was messing with me. But looking back on it now, he seemed genuinely confused by the texts. He’s a bad liar, so I doubt he could have faked it.”
 “If only you and Allison received the messages, what were Lydia and Jackson doing there?”
 “Lydia told me they gave Allison a ride after Scott stood her up for a date.”
 The sheriff nodded and gestured for her to continue. She got to the part where she saw something outside of the cafeteria when he interrupted her again for clarification. “You saw something?”
 “I thought I saw the creature from the photos of the video store,” Nina admitted with a sigh. “I must have been hallucinating. That’s where I began to believe I was dreaming the whole thing up. I didn’t realize it was real until we got up to the chemistry room.” It was hard to admit. Nina always prided herself on having the facts, but she couldn’t even trust her own mind during the most traumatic experience in her life.
 The only other time the sheriff asked for clarification was with the noise that almost caused Nina to black out completely. “What was the sound?”
 “It didn’t sound human. My best guess is that someone played it over the loudspeakers. It was so loud that…” If Nina even thought about it, it still sent shivers down her spine. “I could feel it reverberating through me. I think it was an animal growling.”
 There wasn’t much of the story after that. Sheriff Stilinski thanked her for her time and began to leave the room. He stopped at the doorway, sending her a guilty smile. “I’m sorry, for not believing you about the murders not being animal attacks. Just know that I’m doing everything in my power to make sure this guy goes to jail for a long, long time.”
 Nina smiled in return, the pit in her stomach only deepening. “Thank you, Sheriff.”
 ~~~
 Family meals were hardly ever a priority for the Holmses, but Jen decided to have everyone sit down together for lunch. Jen and Nina sat on one side of the dining room table, while Will and Isaac sat on the other.
 Will was currently pretending Nina didn’t exist. It was easy enough; everyone at the table was already tense given the past twenty-four hours, and all he had to do was either not respond when she spoke, or purposefully leave her out. About twenty minutes of that was all Nina could take before she pushed herself up from the table. “I’m going to the library,” She announced, adopting a calm voice.
 Now Will acknowledged her existence. “Why? Did someone leave their house keys in the children’s section?”
 Jen’s head snapped to her son. “William!”
 “No, actually.” Nina beamed, interrupting her mother from scolding him. “I got a text from Derek Hale. He wants to apologize! He actually wants to meet after dark, but I thought I would get there early and do some reading.”
 “That’s almost as stupid as whatever you were thinking last night.”
 “I don’t seem to recall you stringing two thoughts together.”
 Will huffed. “I was a bit busy making sure you didn’t faceplant.”
 With a sneer, Nina rolled her eyes. “How generous of you.”
 “Nina, please—”
 Nina spun on her heel and went to her bedroom, shutting the door behind her. She shoved books that needed to be returned in her library tote, along with two bottles of excedrin, caffeine pills, her wattle bottle, and a can of bear spray. Her car keys were in her coat pocket, which she shrugged on as her mother knocked on the door and opened it, leaning against the doorway.
 “I don’t care that you’re in a library, keep your ringer on so you can respond to me if I text or call you. Because of curfew, they close at nine. What time are you planning on coming home?”
 “Nine.” Nina pulled the straps of her tote over her shoulder. “I’m going to the diner across the street for dinner.”
 Jen sighed and nodded. “Okay.” Nina attempted to brush past, but Jen stopped her, her hand resting over Nina’s cheek as she leaned in and pressed a quick peck to her forehead. “Be safe. I love you.”
 “Love you.”
 Jen watched Nina as she left, letting out a sigh when the front door closed and locked behind her. She went down the hall to Will’s room, knocking on the door and opening it once she heard a confirmation. She tilted her head, staring at her son in disappointment. “Would you like to discuss what that was about now, or later?”
 ~~~
 Whatever the high school students were doing with their two days off, it wasn’t studying. The library was nearly empty, save for the occasional family or older person stopping in. As patrons cycled through, no one bothered Nina as she thumbed through texts on general cognition. The library didn’t carry any specialized topics regarding sleep deprivation and hallucination, so she would need to get something from the Berkeley library when she got the chance.
 By the time six thirty rolled around, Nina had gone through the entire neuroscience shelf and finished all of her assignments. She gathered her tote with her keys and coat stuffed inside, going to the front desk. “Marta, I’ll be back in about an hour. I left my books out for when I get back. I’m going to the diner; did you want me to get you anything?”
 The young woman peered at Nina over her glasses with a smile. “I’m alright, thank you.” Marta had just graduated with her Masters in library science, and was the new head librarian at the Beacon Hills Public Library. She was good at her job, and Nina liked her a lot more than the previous guy. He always got on her about keeping too many books at her table, and never would have let her leave her things if she stepped away for more than five minutes. She respected the man, but it was still annoying.
 Her dinner was fine. The establishment was never very busy, even around meal rush times, so Nina was able to get in and out in about forty-five minutes. She got back to see Marta no longer at the front desk — probably reshelving — and when she turned the corner to her usual spot, someone else was sitting there.
 Nina knew very well that no one could claim a seat in a public building. In a mostly empty library, however, one would assume that the one spot with books stacked nearby was occupied. Biting back her annoyance, Nina resigned herself to grabbing her things and moving somewhere else. She approached, taking the stack of books and pulling them to her without addressing the man.
 “Interesting reads,” He said, grinning up at her. He was still holding one of the books, the page open to a section she had bookmarked. “Sleep deprivation on the brain. Having trouble sleeping? I know a few remedies.”
 “I’m fifteen,” Nina responded. Usually that was enough to get weird men to back off.
 Seems he was weird and creepy. “So we can’t have a friendly conversation?” He asked with a lax smile.
 Her lip curled in disdain. “I’m not interested in being friendly with a man in his forties.”
 That got him. He was good at hiding it, but Nina saw the almost-imperceptible drop in his ‘nice’ act. He obviously wasn’t in his forties — Nina wouldn’t place him any older than thirty, but it was an easy insult that wasn’t directly malicious. His smile picked back up in a second and he set the book down on the table. “You said you’re fifteen, do you go to Beacon Hills High School? It’s a shame what happened last night.”
 “The janitor was widely loved,” She replied blankly. Oddly enough, that seemed to bother him even more. The side of his face that wasn’t partially paralyzed with a large burn scar twitched into an almost-sneer.
 Nina grabbed the book, sliding it towards her side of the table, when the man’s hand slammed onto the cover. She almost swore she could hear the sound of the wooden table cracking from the pressure. “It’s a shame those students had to witness such a thing,” He said, just as calm as before despite the display of strength. “It makes you think, what were they doing at the school so late?”
 Warning bells had been going off in her mind for the entire interaction, and they weren’t letting up anytime soon. Jen had always instructed Nina to never let a strange man see that he successfully bothered her. She glanced down at his hand. It was just as scarred as his face. “Teenagers aren’t exactly known for their good decision-making skills or impulse control, since the frontal lobe of the brain isn’t fully developed,” Nina replied calmly, despite her racing heart. “My guess is they broke in to pull some prank and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.” That was her best guess for Scott and Stiles being there, anyway. The text messages were still a mystery to her.
 The man tilted his head. “Huh. I didn’t think of that.” He appeared to genuinely regard the new information, as he gave her the same smile as before. “It’s nice to see one teenager that has their head on straight.”
 He lifted his hand from the book and stood, strolling away without a glance back in Nina’s direction. It wasn’t until she witnessed him walking out the front doors that she allowed herself to take a deep breath.
 “Nina? Are you alright?”
 The girl startled, almost dropping the books that were gathered in one arm as she spun to face Marta. She had an empty cart, watching Nina with concern. “Yes, I’m alright,” Nina breathed, fixing the books that had shifted in her grasp. “Do you know who that man was? With the scarring?” With her free hand, Nina gestured to the side of her face.
 Marta’s brow furrowed. “I didn’t see him. He must have come in while I was reshelving. Why, was he bothering you?”
 Yes. But what would she say? That he was just creepy while carrying a normal conversation? He slammed a hand down on a book for no reason? Nina smiled and shrugged. “Everyone bothers me.”
 She chuckled and nodded. “Yeah, me too. Here, let me put those away for you.”
 Nina looked down to the books before loading them onto the cart. “Thank you.”
 The rest of her time at the library was spent with the section on California wildlife. While Nina had only seen a photo of the mysterious creature at the parking lot and hallucinated it in the school, if it was native to California, there would be an image somewhere. It wasn’t until Nina opened up the possibility that it wasn’t a native animal that she remembered Allison’s book. The beast of Gevaudan. A French wolf-man.
 A human being — Derek Hale, according to Scott, which Nina still had doubts about — dressing up in an elaborate pseudo-wolf costume as a means to kill people connected to the Hale fire. And then corner a bunch of kids at the scene of one of the murders. The very thought made Nina want to admit herself to Eichen.
 When Marta eventually came up to Nina to let her know she was going to shut down the main computer in ten minutes, Nina got her things together and put her books away, then retrieved two for Allison; one on French folklore, and Little Red Riding Hood. The second one was a joke, and one that she would hopefully find funny.
 The moment Nina stepped outside, she felt exposed. Vulnerable. The same way she felt when that man was talking to her. Hairs on the back of her neck stood as she got her keys out of her bag and left her other hand inside the tote, clutched around her bear spray. Maybe she was just paranoid, but after last night, it was a smarter trait than she usually gave it credit for. She stood at the top of the stone steps and looked around, seeing nothing around her save for anything on the other side of the street, and began walking to her car.
 At the bottom step, something jumped out of a bush right next to her.
 Nina screamed and jerked back, tripping on the step before she realized it was just a raccoon that scrambled past. Now her butt hurt. Letting out a sigh, Nina pulled herself back up to her feet. “Paranoia is smart actually” her arse. She wiped stray pebbles and gravel from her palms, then began the walk to her car once more, until something in the corner of her eye stopped her dead in her tracks.
 She turned to see what it was, freezing as a familiar figure with bright red eyes stood at the opposite end of the parking lot. Stood.
 There was no way she was hallucinating this. The creature kept its eyes locked on her as it slowly lowered onto its haunches, ready to pounce. Nina softly pressed the unlock button on her keys, and the car lights flashed with a little beep.
 It pounced.
 Nina spun and ran to her car, her hands tightening around the can of bear spray in her tote so hard she almost thought the cool metal would burst in her grip. She was only a meter away when what felt like a large hand grabbed her ankle, and Nina started falling to the ground. Her elbows landed harshly against the pavement, and she spun around, not hesitating to spray the mist directly in the creature’s eyes.
 The noise it made was a bizarre mixture of a snarl, growl, and howl of pain as it fell back. Nina was able to scramble to her feet and make the final few steps to her car, wrenching open the door. She could see the creature gaining on her once more in the corner of her eye and grabbed the kitchen knife she had sheathed against the side of the driver’s seat, turning and slashing at the creature’s face just in time. It made the same noise as Nina scrambled into her car, slamming the door shut behind her and pressing the manual lock. All of the other doors were locked beforehand, so it couldn’t get in through those. Nina moved to start the car, but her horror rose when she realized her keys were no longer in her hand. She dropped them outside. Looking out the window, Nina saw they were just where she had been knocked down. Along with her phone.
 The creature’s bloodied face appeared right in front of the window, drawing another scream from Nina as she fell back, scrambling to the passenger seat to put more distance between them. The window occasionally fogged up with the creature breathing heavily against it, but even through that, Nina could see the slash across its face slowly fade until the only evidence that anything had happened to it was the remaining blood. Nina clutched the knife handle to her chest as its clawed hand reached up, dragging down the window with a long scraaaatcch, reaching the door handle.
 It was toying with her. Nina’s mind flashed to the bus seat, and the barricade it easily broke through at the school. A locked car door was nothing.
 It paused as its left ear twitched. Red eyes were no longer on her as its head turned, and then a gunshot sounded. Nina flinched in her seat, sliding down more. The creature locked its gaze on her once more before running away.
 Another gunshot.
 Blood rushed in her ears as her heart pounded in her chest. She sunk lower and lower in her seat until she was practically folded in on herself, tears welling up in her eyes.
 At the sound of a knock on her window, Nina startled again. She held the knife out as threateningly as she could while also shaking like a leaf with tears streaming down her cheeks. Chris Argent’s concerned gaze went from her face to the bloody weapon, his jaw setting as he visibly sighed. He knew. He knew what it was. He must have seen it, if he was the one shooting at it. Right?
 His eyes lifted back up to meet Nina’s, offering what she assumed was meant to be a reassuring smile. In one hand, he held up her phone and keys, then pointed to the door lock. Nina slowly nodded, knowing that if Chris was actually the secret murderer with red contacts or something, she at least had a knife and the passenger door to fall out of. She flinched again when the door unlocked, and Chris stepped into the driver's seat. “Hi, Nina,” He greeted softly, not wanting to agitate her with too loud of a voice. He handed her the phone and started the car. “Your mom was calling when I found the phone. You might want to call her back.”
 Before Nina could do that for herself, her mother’s caller ID lit up. “Mum, hi.” Her voice was tight and shaky, and she pulled herself to sit correctly as Chris pulled out of the parking lot.
 Nina could tell that any scolding that may have been on her mother’s tongue dissipated at the sound of her greeting. “What’s wrong? I called you three times, and you’re supposed to be home by now.” Jen’s voice was a mix of accusation and worry, a tone that all mothers seemingly had perfected.
 Chris tapped the scratched window. Even if her mother wasn’t a super genius, Nina would have a hard time explaining that specific problem. It was better to get it replaced before anyone else saw it. “My car was acting up, I’m sorry. Mister Argent happened to be nearby and called a tow for me. He’s giving me a ride home.” He nodded.
 “What happened that it needed to be towed?”
 “A fuel leak. It must have started just earlier today, it’s around the time that I needed to replace it anyhow.” It was true, fortunately. She could have that replaced along with her window. Chris pulled into the gas station only a block away from the library, where his SUV sat at the gas pump.
 Her mother sighed. “Could you give the phone to him, please?” She did just that, hearing Jen thank Chris profusely.
 Still holding her knife, Nina got the essentials out of her car, and the two moved to Chris’s as he chatted idly with her mother. Once he handed Nina the phone back and she was able to say goodbye to Jen, she hung up. “You’re a good liar,” Nina commented dryly. He acted like nothing had happened, like he was just being a good samaritan in the right place at the right time.
 He began the drive, knowing where to go once Nina told him the apartment building. “So are you.”
 “Not good enough for her.” Jen would know something was up. Hopefully Nina could just convince her that her nerves were a result of trauma. Being unable to leave, something like that.
 Chris chuckled. “Kids never can lie to their parents.” Nina kept her mouth shut regarding all of the times Allison snuck out of the house. He glanced back to the knife. “You keep a chef’s knife in your car?”
 “It’s a santoku, actually,” She muttered.
 He nodded. “Good. That knife saved your life tonight.”
 Hardly. It was fully ready to rip her face off before Chris started shooting. “What was it?”
 “What did you see?”
 Deflection. He knew what it was, and he confirmed it indeed was a what and not a who. Nina swallowed, biting the inside of her cheek. “I saw the same thing that was at the video store, and at the school last night.” Chris remained perfectly calm, betraying no emotion. “Red eyes, claws, fur. Its wound healed in ten seconds.”
 “Only ten?”
 Nina sat up, staring at Chris. “What was it?” She demanded again, her voice rising. “Whatever it was, it wasn’t human, and it wasn’t an animal.”
 Chris met her eye for a moment before looking back at the road. “You and Lydia are coming over tomorrow night, right?” Nina nodded. Allison was too depressed about Scott to go to either Nina or Lydia’s places, but too lonely to not want to hang out. They were going to have a girl’s night. Now, that was the last thing on Nina’s mind. “I have work near your building. I’ll show you what it was, tell Allison about the car trouble and that I gave you a ride. If you promise not to tell her anything.”
 “Fine.”
 They got to Nina’s building, and Chris gave her another parent-like smile. “Try to get some sleep, kid.”
fuck up our friendship━ eli moskowitz imagine
eli moskowitz x fem!reader
set after the party in 2x09, pretty wholesome with admitting feelings but also angst bc the reader is tryna be friends with both eli and demetri and it is NOT going well
Tumblr media
Once the police busted the party, Y/N knew she had to find Eli. The girl was a Miyagi-Do student, and she knew full well that Sam and Robby would not appreciate her going to find her oldest friend and Cobra Kai’s number one asshole, but the pair were having their own issues, so it was unlikely they would find out. Y/N and Eli had been friends since the girl moved to the Valley at the start of freshman year. She wasn’t exactly a loser as someone like Yasmine or Kyler would word it, and many people never understood why she signed away her high school popularity to be friends with the two biggest dorks in school-- Demetri and Eli-- but she wouldn’t have wanted anybody else. Demetri and Eli had been best friends since kindergarten, and the h/c slotted into the group perfectly. They may have had it pretty bad at school, but they had each other.
Then, two years later, at the start of their junior year, karate came back to the Valley. Whilst Y/N and Demetri had always been seemingly content with living their lives as losers, apparently Eli didn’t feel the same. It wasn’t the mohawk or the new name they particularly had a problem with, or his newfound popularity that bothered them. It was the way he went about getting it. Hawk was becoming the very person he had always hated. Both of his best friends knew this wasn’t the person he really was, but when Demetri had addressed this, Eli declared an all out war against him. So now Y/N was left as the middle-man, trying to care for both of her best friends and bring them back together without choosing a side. And neither of them made it easy.
Tonight, at Moon’s party, Y/N had been so hopeful. The two sat talking about Doctor Who whilst the girl stood beside Robby and Sam, sipping her drink and pretending she wasn’t listening in to what Demetri and Eli were talking about. She allowed herself to get distracted for one moment to talk with Robby about skateboarding and suddenly, Eli was pouring his drink all over Demetri’s head. With a shameful sigh, Y/N walked over to the two, handing paper towels to the dark haired boy and raising her eyebrows at Eli. The red haired boy gave her a sheepish, apologetic smile before wandering off to join the other Cobras.
In all fairness, Hawk had it coming when Demetri stood up on that stage with the mic in his hand, but the brown eyed boy didn’t need to take it that far. Watching from where she stood with the other Miyagi-Dos, her e/c eyes flitted between Eli and Demetri. It pained the girl to watch her two best friends fight, but it hurt more knowing she was watching her best friend and the boy she was in love with attempt to tear each other’s heads off. Y/N had developed the biggest crush on Eli in their sophomore year, and everybody knew it except the boy in question. Demetri knew it, too, which was why initially he was so hesitant to launch an attack against his best friend, no matter how much he deserved it. But that night, he hadn’t held back.
Once the cops pulled up outside, everything descended into chaos. Her eyes met with Demetri’s, which were filled with remorse, and he nodded at her. “Go find him. Make sure he’s okay.” Y/N offered the boy a small smile in return. She knew Demetri still cared for Eli, and Eli still cared for Demetri. It was just Hawk who appeared not to. Rushing out the house so as not to get caught by the police, the h/c found Eli walking out the back of the house alone. The rest of the Cobras weren’t around, which reassured Y/N, but only slightly. “Eli!” She called, causing his head to swing around, his blue eyes catching hers. “What do you want? Come to humiliate me even more?” “Eli,’ The girl breathed in response, sounding exasperated as she caught up to him. “You know I wouldn’t do that.” “I didn’t think Demetri would, either,” He responded, allowing Y/N to see how hurt he really was. “And I didn’t think you would attack him when we were at the mall the other day. Or pour beer on his head.” Eli let out a sigh-- he was Eli now he was around Y/N. She was the only person he trusted enough to let his newfound guard down around.
“I’ve told you this before, Y/N,” The red haired boy said with a sigh. “Demetri chose his side. He went against us. Against Cobra Kai.” “I don’t need to hear it again, Eli,” The h/c haired girl huffed. “I’m just here to make sure you’re okay. Cobra Kai or not, you’re my best friend. I care about you, and so does Demetri.” “Whatever,” The boy exhaled, but he still allowed Y/N to walk the rest of the way home with him, and even come in when he opened the door and headed inside. “Mom isn’t home,” Eli spoke, closing the door and flicking off his shoes, “She’s on night shift tonight.” “Good job I’m here then,” Y/N nodded, knowing how much the blue eyed boy hated being alone. Eli didn’t say anything in response, just smiled smally.
Any alcohol consumed at the party that evening had begun to wear off, as Eli and Y/N sat on the couch in the front room. The silence was awkward for the first few moments; it always was now that there was a clear divide pushing the two apart, but both of them more than anything wanted to stay close. As much as Y/N’s crush on Eli was clear as day (to everyone other than him), the boy’s reciprocated feelings were much better hidden, especially with his new Hawk facade. However, Cobra Kai had thrown in the spanner in the works, and any chance the boy may have had with his best friend was seemingly gone. Yet, every few nights the girl would still come over and spend time with Eli, alternating the time she used to spend with both her best friends.
Eventually, the awkwardness faded, and the two would begin to speak about anything and everything they hadn’t caught up on, considering they had spent most of the summer apart at their separate dojos. An hour or so past, taking the time up to midnight, before Eli invited Y/N to stay the night like she had many times before. The h/c hastily agreed, and followed Eli upstairs to his bedroom, yawning quietly due to exhaustion. Once they made it up, her e/c eyes widened. “What the fuck happened in here?” The once blue walls, littered with posters, were now red and bare. A punching bag stood where a fake TARDIS used to be, and there wasn’t a funko pop in sight, which was not at all like Eli Moskowitz. The bedsheets were just plain black, rather than Star Wars themed, but when the h/c craned her neck, there were still small, glow-in-the-dark stars littered across the ceiling. “I redecorated,” Was all Eli said, flopping down on his bed.
Y/N flopped down beside him. “I think I preferred the Doctor Who merch,” The girl admitted honestly, causing Eli to look at her with wide eyes. “Did you know the new Doctor was female?” “Of course,” The h/c smiled, “Me and Demetri still watch every Friday night.” At the mention of this, Eli’s face fell, causing Y/N to frown. “You know he didn’t really want to hurt you tonight,” The girl sighed, attempting to lock eyes with Eli who was staring down at his fidgeting fingers. “It was a shitty thing to do, but you’ve both done shitty things to each other.” She continued her speech, becoming more and more passionate as she spilled her frustration out to Eli: “Do you know how hard it is for me to watch my two best friends fight with each other? Over something as petty as a fucking karate dojo! I know that I can’t stop you two fighting and the best I can do is try and maintain the middle ground, because the last thing I want to do is choose between my best friend and the others at Miyagi-Do, and the boy I’ve had feelings for since forever.”
Y/N’s voice began to fade out as she calmed down, but Eli was still staring at her, seemingly in shock. Noticing how panicked the boy looked, the girl’s face softened. “I’m sorry for yelling, Eli, I-” “You said you had feelings for me.” His voice was deadpan, showing no emotions as his blue eyes bore into Y/N. The girl’s mouth opened and closed in shock. “I- Maybe I said that. Accidentally. Maybe-” “You have feelings for me?” Eli spoke again, and for a second, he sounded like Eli, like the person he was before all this karate shit took over. With a sigh, the girl nodded. “Congratulations. You’re officially the last person to know.” “Why didn’t you tell me?” The boy asked, his eyes wide. “I don’t know,” The girl shrugged. “Guess I didn’t wanna fuck up our friendship, but I guess karate’s doing that for us.” Y/N’s e/c eyes chose to rest on the bed sheets beneath her instead of on Eli as he responded. “Well, what if I want to fuck up our friendship?” At this comment, however, the girl’s eyes shot up, just in time for Eli to place his hand on her chin and placed his lips against hers.
She was shocked at first, but Y/N soon kissed back, placing her hands on the boy’s face to pull him closer. The girl felt him smile into the kiss as he rolled himself closer, wrapping a hand round her waist to draw her in. “I’ll fuck up our friendship a hundred times over if it means I can do that again,” Y/N smiled, resting her forehead against his. Eli kissed her once again, softly, before saying: “For the record, I like you, too. I’m surprised Demetri didn’t tell you.” “That rat!” Y/N exclaimed, though she wasn’t really annoyed. “I’m going to kill him!” “Right now?” Eli asked, quirking his eyebrow with a cocky smirk. “Hm, maybe not,” The girl grinned, biting her lip and pulling the boy closer. “I think I’ll just stay here and kiss you.”
Hey, may i ask for a little scenario where Cheryl blossom falls for a new Femreader student who's a pro kick boxer and can kicke asses (but at first sight she doesn't seem like it) when reader intervens on day when Cheryl Veronica and Betty start an argument with some guys from the sport team who are quite violente. Thank you !
Tumblr media
Before she signed you up for your first lesson, your mother had very solemnly laid out a few ground rules regarding your year-long campaign start kickboxing.
1.  No hanging out after hours at the gym
You were only 14 at the time, but your mom wasn’t naive and she noticed the intensity in your gaze as you’d pass the gym and the way your face reddened as you stammered out a few words to the older girls standing out front when they asked if you were interested (in kickboxing, of course).  If she was going to pay for lessons, you’d better be focused on your trainer and not securing a hookup for later.
2.  No hiding injuries
You had hated going to the doctor since childhood, and it became apparent early on that you would go to great lengths to avoid doing so.  From denying fevers to the time you had hidden two broken toes for a week, you always made every effort to mend yourself up before revealing anything was wrong.  If you were going to fight, you had to be honest and suck it up enough to see a doctor if you needed to.
3. No fights outside the ring.
That one had been hard to stick to at times.  Though not violent by any means, you were quick-tempered and needed to get a handle on it if you were going to get “punching lessons”.
You had agreed to all of these rules, to your mother’s subtle surprise, and had been in the gym every afternoon after school since.  And, to her immense relief, you didn’t allow the other women at the gym to distract you.  It was easier than you had initially thought, especially considering most of them were hot-headed and honestly a little too similar to yourself to consider dating.
Cheryl, on the other hand...Cheryl got you wrapped around her finger within weeks of your arrival to Riverdale.  Your official tour guide to the new school, Betty, had introduced the two of you during your lunch period.  One look at the subtle flex of your muscles beneath the shirt you were wearing was enough to catch her attention, and the game was on.
--------------------------------------------------
“Hey, your girl and her little friends are starting a fight.”
You looked up from your phone, frowning in confusion at the unfamiliar person in front of you.  You hadn’t cared to get to know many others at the school once settling in with Cheryl and her friend group, but judging by the sweatshirt, this was clearly the girlfriend of one of the lacrosse players.
“What?”
“Cheryl, Betty, and Veronica are in the parking lot with some of the football-”
You didn’t bother staying to hear the rest, opting instead to zip up your backpack and sling it over your shoulder.  Standing up quickly, you brushed past a few fellow students just arriving in the student lounge and high-tailed it towards the front entrance.
As you neared the doors, you saw a small crowd gathering near the parking spots that were unofficially reserved for the football players (aka: if you parked there and weren’t on the team, your tires were going to be deflated by lunch) and quickened your pace.
“You seriously don’t have anything better to do than fake an insurance claim against a sophomore?”
Veronica’s voice was the first one that you could make out clearly as you pushed your way through the spectators.  A knot tightened in your stomach as you finally broke into the center of the crowd and spotted her, Betty, and Cherly at a standoff with five douchebags in letterman jackets.  You glanced around the sea of unfamiliar faces, hoping to spot Archie or hell, even Jughead.
Nope.  You were the only reinforcement so far.
“Look, the little freak clearly came whipping into the parking lot way too fast and smashed into me and I have a few witnesses here that will back me up.”
“As if.  You literally almost ran Jughead and me over the other morning,” Betty pipes up.
“And for someone always flexing Daddy’s money, you’d think you’d be able to afford to get a little scratch fixed.  Actually, I bet your Daddy would just love to hear all about this and all about that time two summers ago when you-”
“Shut the fuck up, you bitch.”
The Lead Douchebag lunged forward, a sudden surge of anger and panic replacing the smug features that had painted his face before Cheryl began her remark.  Whatever happened two summers ago was clearly something he intended to take to his grave, and she had struck a nerve in the same way that watching him rush her like that struck a nerve with you.
“Oh!”
The crowd reacted to your swift punch with one unified sound of surprise and teenage exhilaration, but the ringing in your ears drowned out any further responses over the next few minutes.  Five against one wasn’t a fair match by a long shot and you took quite a few blows, but the football players didn’t have the form or the stamina that you had.  So, when you landed a solid hit to the face or a kick to the leg, it gave you enough time to move on to the next opponent.
The scene soon descended into chaos, with more students arriving to add to the jeering, screaming sea of onlookers desperately trying to record every second of action on their phones.  Eventually, Archie and Jughead were among them and turned it into a 3v5 before a few administrators caught wind and rushed outside to break things up.
---------------------------------------------------------
“My mom is gonna be so pissed.”
Cheryl’s head tilted to the side, expression soft and filled with subtle adoration as you pressed an icepack to your cheek and slumped against the back of the bench outside of the principal’s office.  Apart from your face, your left side and your knuckles are really the only things that hurt much right now.
“No she won’t; Principal Honey isn’t even calling home and we aren’t in trouble.”
“Yeah, but this will bruise,” you said, shifting the ice, “and I’m not great at lying to her.”
“God, your healthy relationship with your mother is constantly both surprising and refreshing.”  The redhead reached over to squeeze your leg and you looked away, a little bashful at how she always teased you over the difference in parenting styles your mothers had utilized.  “But is it really that big of a deal?  Surely she has to be used to this kind of thing by now.”
“Not exactly.  I’ve never actually been in a fight outside of, you know, the scheduled ones...” you admitted, once again feeling your cheeks burn with embarrassment.  Cheryl looked surprised and like she didn’t fully believe your statement.
“Never?  And here I thought you spent your days before Riverdale saving many a damsel in distress.”
“Nope.”
“Well today you saved three, since I’m deciding to count Betty and Veronica as my fellow damsels.  And to say thank you, we’re treating you to dinner at Pop’s and then drinks and a little performance in the speakeasy.”
You arched an eyebrow, then grimaced at the flash of pain in your face.
“Performance?”
“Just something we’re throwing together,” Cheryl winked mischeviously and just like that, any lingering concerns about your mother’s reaction to this disappeared.
THIS CONTAINS SLIGHT SPOILERS FOR NEVER HAVE I EVER S2 READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
This is quite long I had a lot to unpack.
Since watching the 2nd season of Never Have I Ever a few things have been bothering me about the way people are reacting to Devi, and the show overall but mostly Devi. First of all she’s what a sophomore in high school? and she’s doing this all while being the only brown girl (up until kinda the middle of S2) and still dealing with grief and having absolutely no idea who she is yet. To me outside of being an honor roll student she is not doing things FOR HER she is doing this to appease her mother. Who while she means well pushing Devi to succeed to certain extremes which if Devi shows the slightest behavior of fucking up her mother makes harsh comments instead of understanding Devi is a literal teenager and needs room for fucking up.
Is Devi hella unreasonable at times? YES does she often times act strictly on impulse without a second thought…YES. But as a girl who virtually has no one outside of her friends who also are staring to drift from her and get into their first relationships themselves and have their own activities she essentially is left to navigate the world and her teenage angst alone. While I will give Nalini credit for all the work and time she has put in to not only being a single mother and navigating her own grief but also being a working mother who is a doctor and quite possibly has her own struggles with being a brown women in that filed. My problem lies with her not being able to balance or even let go of a strong arm parenting style that mostly focuses on Devi’s fuck up more than her accomplishments and makes comments on how her fuck ups that haven’t even happened yet. I’m not sure Nalini even realizes Devi is at the very very top of her class because I truly believe (after S1) even though Nalini apologized to Devi Nalini has a ‘hoping for the best but expecting the worst’ attitude when it comes to Devi and that’s in the for front of her mind so much she doesn’t realize Devi goes above and beyond not only for herself but to make her mother proud of her all for her mother to just not acknowledge that.
Now with Devi’s characterization I get where some people are coming from on saying Devi shouldn’t have been “boy crazy” or that they “ruined her character development” but here’s my problem those critiques while valid and your allowed to have those opinions…It’s just not really realistic and let me tell you why like I stated Devi is what a sophomore in high school and she has made it a abundantly clear her parents forbid her to date cause it’s school and extra curriculars only. Which will lead to a good college which thus will turn into a good career. While that’s all well and good. I don’t think y’all realize the FOMO of being in high school and growing up with very strict parents, and wanting to have your first relationship. Wanting to be an actual teenager and not wanting to think about 3-4 years down the line which most teenagers don’t/can’t visualize cause it’s not the right now. Devi wants to have those experiences and there’s nothing wrong with that does she go about it the right way…not exactly but y’all act like YOU have never been a teenager and said and done awful things out of anger or just pure immature stupidity. For the boy crazy part Devi is literally having her first feelings and experiences with boys she has 0 clue what she is doing outside of probably books, tv, movies and what her friends assume they know (even though they mean well) the only person Devi would remotely trusts is gone, and she can’t ask her mother cause her mother would honestly probably shut her down and make her feel guilty for even wanting to start having her first experiences with boys. Y’all have such a warped view of not only real teenagers and high school aged kids but also fictional ones. Y’all are so use to shows having protagonist being awful or starting off kinda okay but then their character turns awful and remains that way. What some of you fail to realize is actual teenagers and “teenagers” in shows can/are VERY morally grey.
Should Devi have been honest and possibly communicated to both Ben and Paxton that she has some sort of feelings for them both..possibly but Devi is a teenager do you think she is having a in depth analysis and talk with herself (outside of a pros and cons list) about what infatuation versus lust versus genuine connection versus romantic attraction looks like probably not. Let’s also analyze how she literally goes from being in her eyes forgettable to being noticed and even though it’s not talked about in the show explicitly she honestly probably struggles with self esteem/self image issues. To go from being a girl who to her no one cares about/notices to one who is getting the attention of two boys who are in Devi’s eyes attractive in their own right. She is so consumed with two guys ACTUALLY being interested in her that she fails to realize she is/and will hurt them both, Do I think Paxton is genuinely attracted to Devi…maybe. But I’m still on the fence about their relationship to me in the beginning I felt Paxton felt Devi is just another meaningless high school fling that he will forget about once he gets to college but to Devi here’s this guy who is “popular” very attractive and he pays attention to her is she looking at the semantics of the situation and how Paxton is more than likely just using her and is only engaging with Devi to get a passing grade and to basically give her the superficial experience of a “high school boyfriend” no she’s not she’s looking at it like here’s this guy who is attractive and he wants to be with someone like me. But do I also believe Devi in S1 was using Paxton and then fell for him DEFINITELY but I will give credit to Paxton for trying at a real relationship with Devi and I hope he will try to be more open and honest.
Do I think Ben likes Devi I honestly do, While the insensitive jokes (exchanged between both) should be discussed I think Ben over time started to see Devi as a girl who finally saw him not the rich, annoying, know it all. But in his view Devi and him are on equal playing fields because they are both overly driven smart individuals and when she said yes to going out with him it was probably the first time he felt like a girl saw the real him. While Ben too more than likely struggles with abandonment issues him dating Devi in a way made him feel like this was the first time he could actual be happy about something cause it was something he actually wanted and not something he just did to earn points in others books and impress people he genuinely got something on his own and that he was actually happy not a front he put on. To me Ben’s abandonment issues come out even more than in S1 when he tells Devi why he’s so hurt and it’s the night of the party when she runs after Paxton (who he sees has it all) and Devi doesn’t “choose him” Do I think Ben and Devi should date cause they share some form of the same trauma no. But again Devi is not use and doesn’t even know what to do with the attention of two people. Again is Devi looking at the semantics of her relationship with Ben…No. I don’t think Devi even realizes she’s quite literally hurting two people cause we could also discuss how Ben and Paxton probably have had other flings and relationships without a second thought while Devi having no relationship experiences and this is territory for her and she has no idea what she is doing or how to properly navigate this situation.
I’m almost done with this long ass rant I promise but it’s two more things I want to make light of/point out I don’t think anyone really gives Devi credit for still going to therapy, loosing a parent is unbearable especially loosing one as young as Devi did, especially when you feel the only parent that truly understood and supported you is gone. Devi doing things that are impulsive and unreasonable because she quite literally has no guidance her mother is only consumed with Devi not making the family “look bad” Devi’s grief is so heavy and she feels she’s going at it alone because her mother doesn’t take genuine time to talk to her. Now was Devi “stalking” her mother extremely inappropriate yes for sure but do Nalini and her need to communicate better for Devi to understand that her mother wasn’t dating sure even if Nalini was on a date their should have been communication there. Devi will probably never stop grieving her father hell he literally came to her in a dream to tell her she deserves better when it came to “dating” Paxton and Nalini will probably never stop grieving her husband but she deserves happiness too and I believe if Devi and Nalini were both honest with each other her slowly dating again wouldn’t have been a problem. Another point I wanna make connecting Devi, Paxton, and Ben is they all have this view that the grass is greener on the other side and that’s just not the case. Ben is jealous of Paxton cause he feels he has the “Perfect life” but in actuality Paxton is extremely flawed and honestly insecure his own family doesn’t believe in him and he knows people only like him because he is attractive, while Paxton looks at Ben like this, while annoying Ben is smart, rich, and no one ever questions Ben’s intelligence but in actuality Ben is very lonely and has spent most of his life alone or being raised by other people which has caused him to put on a huge front to people and often times overcompensate in his social life, and Devi looks at other girls like they have it all and have 0 struggles or problems (I.e her views on Anissa) but Devi fails to realize thy also struggle, are insecure, is struggling with mental illness, and don’t have themselves figured out, and Devi is looking at this man her mom is “dating” as if he’s taking something away but In actuality he is experiencing his own losses. All in all Never Have I Ever gets teenage angst and messy problematic morally grey teenagers right and the fact that y’all beg for more “flawed or problematic” characters and when you get them you don’t like that they are just that it’s odd to me it seems like y’all only want problematic characters if it’s how you see fit.
TL;DR: Y’all need to stop acting like y’all weren’t gross annoying and had fuck ups as teenagers y’all should really stop pretending like teenagers in real and some of us as teens didn’t have/engage in relationships that weren’t good but we learned from it while this show isn’t real it shows y’all will scream let people fuck up and let them grow but you don’t actually mean it. Devi is a teenager and requires room to grow she even admits she acts out and is impulsive but y’all act like she’s supposed to have the self awareness of a 60 year old.
Pitcher’s Plate
Y/n loves baseball. Has since she was a child. After giving it up her freshman year, she never thought she would play competitively again. That is until baseball star and long time friend Jung Jaehyun needs her help.
High School Baseball Star!Jaehyun x childhoodfriend!reader
friends to lovers
Words: 2.9k
Warning(s): a few swear words, baseball inaccuracies
~~
In through the nose.
Out through the mouth.
Elbow aligned.
Back Straight.
Don’t freeze up.
Just breath.
You wind up, adrenaline running through your veins.
You lunge forward and release.
~
You gasped as the sound went through the park. Jung Jaehyun had never been an idiot. Everyone knew that the school’s star pitcher was smart and quick on his feet. Usually, that knowledge was used more on the field and less in the classroom, but this time you weren’t sure as his bat clattered to the ground. His face twisted with pain as he held his arm to his chest. It’s broken.
That idiot blocked the baseball flying for his head with his arm.
Taeil, the assistant coach, jumped out of the ball pit and ran towards home plate as the umpire called for a time out. Your view of their conversation was blocked by none other than Kim Doyoung. The raven haired baseball captain quickly joined their conversation.
You gave up trying to see Jaehyun and looked out to see the other pitchers team gathered. Kim Mingyu is easily Jaehyun’s biggest rival. Ever since freshman year both Jaehyun and Mingyu had been starting pitchers for their respective schools. Your blood boiled as you saw the smug look laced across Mingyu’s face. Of course he did it on purpose. Bottom of the last inning, down 2 to 3, and our star pitcher, one of our last chances for winning, down and out. You were half way out of your seat when a hand grabbed your forearm.
“Go Jaehyun! You’ve got it.” you glared at Jungwoo and looked back at the park just in time to see Jaehyun throw a single finger jester at us. You thought you heard a couple of girls gasp. Their image of kind, calm star pitcher Jaehyun completely shattered. Doyoung shook his head in amusement. Jungwoo shrugged and tried to hold in his laughter. After knowing the three of them for over 11 years, you knew a little teasing would be fine, but concern slipped back to the front of your mind.
Jaehyun threw his good hand up at what Taeil said. Words spilled out of his mouth and Taeil pointed to the dugout. He continued speaking and threw his hand to first base.
“That idiot,” you muttered as he kicked his bat away and stalked to first base. You watched as Taeil and Doyoung exchanged a look. Taeil sighed and picked up Jaehyun’s bat making his way to the dugout.
Doyoung took his place at the batting mound. While he didn’t seem like the athletic type, Doyoung always surprised others. He wasn’t the best on the team, but he had a natural way of leading others and knew how to play in order to win. There were two people on the bases, Jaehyun and Mark. Doyoung just needed to hit it far enough to get Mark to score a run. They could tie up the game. You watched as Doyoung swung one strike, then a second. Miraculously, the third pitch connected with his bat and the ball was sent flying. The crowd yelled as the players shot across the bases. Mark hit home plate as Jaehyun came around third. The baseball flew back towards infield. Taeil yelled for Jaehyun to stop, but Jaehyun didn’t listen. He raced for home plate trying to beat the ball. Chaos sounded as Jaehyun slid forward and a ball hit the catcher’s mit.
“Safe,” the umpire called. The crowd went in an uproar, but you couldn’t look away from where Jaehyun lay his arm tucked between his chest and knees.
~~
You stormed through the crowd. “Excuse me,” you heard an indignant scoff from behind you. Jungwoo was by your side. His tall frame looked over the crowd, leading you towards Jaehyun.
“Weren’t we amazing,” you hear Jaehyun crooned as you slip through a gap of people.
Jungwoo smiled and hugged Doyoung, “You were both spectacular."
"I don’t think that’s the word I would use,” Taeil greeted from behind the two. He frowned at Jaehyun. “I’m not happy with the fact that you went against what I suggested.”
“Like you just said,” Jaehyun grinned. “It was a suggestion."
Taeil frowned, “I don’t wanna be the one explaining to your father why you didn’t come off the field.” He nodded as Mr. Jung walked up to talk to the head coach. Taeil sighed as he walked towards the two.
“You know y/n,” Jungwoo spoke with a slight lith. “You should fill in for Jaehyun.” You stood still. The last time you had played competitively was freshman year. You had made it on the high schools varsity softball team as a pitcher. You guys had gone to state, but in the last game you froze. You couldn’t throw a pitch. The team had lost and you walked away from competitive baseball, permanently. You couldn’t join the boys team as a pitcher. Besides, the coach and the boys wouldn’t let you.
“No way in hell,” Doyoung stepped in. “Y/n cannot join the boys baseball team. Especially not as a pitcher."
You started to defend yourself, but Jungwoo had already called over Taeil.
"Taeil, don’t you think y/n would make a great pitcher in place of Jaehyun?”
Taeil stared at you for a second before nodding, “It would be a difficult transition to the men’s team, but y/n has the skill."
Doyoung grunted at Taeil’s words. He went to insert his 2 cents when a voice spoke. "Jaehyun,” Mr. Jung rested a hand on the shoulder of the uninjured arm. “Come on. We need to get that looked at as soon as possible.” Jaehyun’s face fell as he looked down at his arm.
“Hey, chin up,” you grin. “Now you can focus on other things, like your school work. I thought I heard Ms. Joy say something about some missing work from you."
Jaehyun shot a glowering look at you. You grinned and blew a kiss at him. He promptly grabbed it out of the air before throwing it to the ground a grin now on his face. You smiled back at him as he walked away. You turned back to your friends as a look passed between them.
"What?” You tilt your head.
“Nothing,” Jungwoo sang. He wrapped an arm around you before pointing at Doyoung. “We still on for tomorrow?"
Doyoung nodded as he walked away, "I’ll see you both tomorrow.” He turned to walk backwards, “10 am. Don’t be late.”
~~
You loved the small ball park. As a kid, you, Doyoung, Jaehyun, and Jungwoo would come down on Saturdays and practice throwing, catching, and hitting. The tradition continued as you guys got older, eventually Jaehyun and Doyoung started to invite a few guys to play small scrimmages. Jungwoo walked next to you as you entered. Doyoung stood stretching his limbs. “You’re late.”
“Only by a few minutes,” you check your watch, seeing 10:07 flash across. Jaehyun sat on a bench nearby, his arm wrapped in a cast. “Hey, sunshine,” you sit next to him taking note of the splotchy skin and bags under his eyes. “Rough night? How’s the arm?”
“Fractured. Of course we couldn’t figure that out right away because my dad wanted to go to Urgent Care instead of the ER,” he sighed.
“Hey there’s nothing wrong with urgent care.”
He shook his head, “I’m not saying there is, but there is a problem when he gets lost, can’t find it, and refuses to use a GPS. I had to wait another hour and a half after the game to even see a doctor”
You cringe, “I’m sorry.” He gave you a sad smile. A sting came from your back and you yelped, “Hey!”
“Come on, we need our pitcher!” Doyoung stood at the home plate. You glared at him.
“I thought you didn’t want me as your pitcher,” you brought up the conversation from the night before. You wave as you notice Yuta and Winwin standing at two of the bases. It was nice to see some of the team out playing recreationally. “But, now you do? Make up your mind. Am I good or not?”
Doyoung ignored your malice, “You’re not a bad pitcher, y/n. You know that.” He watched you as you stood at the pitcher mound. “I just don’t want you on my team.”
You rolled your eyes. “Just because you’re the captain doesn’t mean you own the team.”
“Can we just play, please,” Jungwoo spoke up from the third base.
You grinned at him. Turning to Doyoung you adjusted your grip on the ball. You could easily strike him out with a few curve balls. It was your best pitch. You’d perfected it at a young age. Since your older brother, Taeyong, also played baseball he took it upon himself to teach you everything he knows, and you’re thankful for it. You knew he was never devoted to the sport like you are, but he had a natural talent for it. Before Jaehyun was the star, it was Taeyong. You loved your older brother. Expectations were high for you. Everyone thought that you were going to be the queen of softball. Between being best friends with Jaehyun and Doyoung, and having Taeyong as an older brother you knew you had to be the best. The pressure was too great and when push came to shove you broke. So, despite your gut telling you to become the next varsity pitcher, you decided not to. You pull your arm back before letting the ball fly. Strike one.
~~
Crushes are weird things. You can never be certain the other person reciprocates your feelings. You also can’t be sure that it won’t ruin a friendship. You’ve known Jaehyun since he moved across the street from you when you were five. Through every period of life you’ve grown with him. When the summer after sophomore year started, so did another period of life. Jaehyun had always been a handsome kid, you’ve thought that your entire life, and the pictures you have from your childhood prove that. When you had entered high school, you noticed that other people also noticed Jaehyun’s looks. It didn’t bother you. Jaehyun could like whomever he wanted. Until, you realized that you also started noticing Jaehyun. Not only for his looks, but also for his kind heart. And how he always smelled so nice.
Why did he have to smell so nice? You tried not to breathe deeply as he stood close to you. “Show me how you pitch.”
“Why,” you broke out of your reverie. The two of you stood in the middle of the playing field after the scrimmage was over and everyone had gone home.
He shrugged, “I just want to show you something.” You frown before preparing to throw. “Stop,” he put his hand on your shoulder. “When you’re preparing to throw you need to make sure you keep your back straight,” he pulled back on your shoulder. “We can’t have you slouching like an old lady.”
“I thought you were trying to help.”
“I am,” he grinned. “Now show me what it looks like when you throw it.” You rock forward to throw it and he stops your arm before you release, “You need to keep your elbow in line with your body. Here,” he stepped up behind you and adjusted your arm. “You’re a great pitcher but your form is terrible. I guess Taeyong can only teach you so much.” he quieted.
“And what does my form have to do with anything,” you asked, standing up straight. “It doesn’t matter if I’m only playing recreationally.”
Jeahyun took a deep breath and stepped in front of you. “It matters because,” he looked you straight in the eye. “I want you to try out as the new pitcher.”
~~
“Don’t you dare try out.”
“I’m having a great day. Thank you for asking.” You close your locker. Doyoung stood next to you.
Doyoung frowned, “I’m serious, y/n. Don’t try out today.”
“How did you even know that I was thinking about trying out today,” you crossed your arms. Doyoung shrugged but his eyes moved down the hall to where Jaehyun stood. “Don’t worry Doyoung I’m not trying to upstage you. I won’t be trying to get into your guys testosterone party.” You turned and walked to your next class. It was going to be a long day. Tryouts were after lunch, which was after this class. Even though you brought your gear you were still trying to decide if you actually wanted to join tryouts.
“I don’t get why he’s so adamant about me not trying out,” you confided in Jaehyun as both walked towards the lunch room. “I know that I can make it through.”
“He does too,” Jaehyun stopped as you opened your locker. “That’s what he’s afraid of. That you’ll actually make the team and then when it matters you’ll freeze.”
“So he doesn’t believe in me,” you turned. At Jaehyun’s hesitation, you felt yourself heat up. Slamming the door shut, you stormed to lunch. It doesn’t take you long to see him. His back was towards you as he conversed with Jungwoo. You saw a variety of emotions filter across his face. He pointed at you. Doyoung turned and stood as you approached him. “I can’t believe you! You think that I’ll freeze up.”
“Who told you?”
You rolled your eyes.
“I knew I shouldn’t have told Jaehyun.”
“So it’s true you think that I’m going to freeze up,” you felt tears sting your eyes. “Screw you, Kim Dongyoung. That happened once.” You turned on your heel slipping past Jaehyun. You rushed towards the locker room. You don’t need his approval. You’re going to tryout if not for anything more than to spit, Kim Dongyoung.
~~
You looked up as you heard people walk in. The current team made their way through the room. Jaemin, the current relief pitcher, stopped as he spotted you, “You’re a girl.”
“What gave it away,” you spat. Jaehyun stood next to you grinning.
“Are you sure you want to be trying out for a guys team?” Jaemin raised his eyebrow.
You glared at him, “What are you insinuating.”
He raised his hands, “I’m just calling it like I see it.” He leaned forward, “And you look like you’re about to be eaten alive.”
You gulped slightly as he grinned and walked out of the room. “Don’t worry about him. All the guys are harmless.” You tried to give Jaehyun a confident grin, but you went so sure. Even Yuta and Winwin, whom you played with on the weekends, seemed intimidating right now. “Just go out and show ‘em what you got.” You stood and wiped your hands on your pants. Grabbing your mit you gave Jaehyun a small smile. He smiled back, “Good luck.”
You kept to yourself as you warm up. Taeil walked by and gave your shoulder a squeeze. “You’re going to do great. You’ve got the former pitcher vouching for. Coach values Jaehyun’s opinion.” You took a breath as confidence filled you.
You stopped as Jaemin moved in front of you, “I’m sorry but I was warming up here first.” You told him with as much authority as possible.
“I’m actually on the team,” he crossed his arms.
You started to tell him off when a voice called out, “Jaemin, come warm up with me!” you looked over to see a shorter tan boy you recognized as the second baseman wave him over. He smiled as he saw you look over at him. Jaemin frowned and stalked away.
You took a deep breath as Taeil called you over. Stepping up to the mound you looked over to see Jaehyun sitting in the stands. Taeil stood ready to track your ball speed.  You paused as you watched Jaehyun give you the sign to throw a four seam fastball. You gave him a confused look to which he re-signed a four seam fastball. Maybe he thought that pitch  was better than your curveball. In this moment, you had to trust. You adjusted your grip on the ball.
Straight back.
Elbow aligned.
Lunge and release.
The ball thudded against the catcher, Kun’s glove.
Taeil stared down at the number. “83 mph.”
That’s fast. That’s really fast. You knew that you had a fast pitch but to be at the top of the average for high school guys.
Shit.
You are damn fine.
~~
Your heart hammered as you walked through the room. The tension was different. After the coach called you last night, you knew that you had to wait to tell your parents. Jaehyun already knew. You couldn’t tell Jungwoo. You weren’t sure if Doyoung knew. The two of you hadn’t spoken a word to each other since the afternoon before. After today, you weren’t sure the two of you would ever be friends again.
You stepped into the light and walked towards the group of boys that stood facing Taeil and the coach. Taeil smiled as he saw you approach. “Okay team, I’m sure you all are anxious to know who your new pitcher for the rest of the season will be,” Taeil glanced down at the clipboard in his hands. “We saw a lot of promising talent yesterday, but had to make a decision. So in addition to Jaemin I would like to introduce the new pitcher. Please make her feel welcome,” he gestured to you. You felt frozen as all eyes turned toward you.  “Y/n y/l/n.”
an injury headcanon👀 i’m here for any angst I can get
Sophomore Year of High School; Laredo, Texas
"What happened?!" Javier rushes through the doors of the hospital, hands on his knees breathing hard.
"What are you talking about young man?" the nurse asks exasperated. "Who are you here for?" He stumbles over your name, heart pounding a million miles an hour since he got to your house and your parents told him where you were.
She checks her charts and sighs, "She came in about an hour ago, I guess she fell out a tree?" Javier's fist clench at his side, you were only in a fucking tree because your asshole parents changed the locks. "Are you family?"
"I'm her brother," he quickly mutters, anything to get back to you. "Please, is she okay?"
"Come with me," she stands giving you a raise of her brow, almost like she doesn't believe him but thankfully she stays silent. Javier follows her towards a set of bay doors that swing open with a swipe of her keycard. He counts the numbers as he passes; five, six, seven, she stops at door number eight and gestures you inside.
He freezes in the doorway, a doctor in a crisp white coat, standing by your side. His eyes trail over you, taking in the bandage wrapped around your head, the bright purple cast on your right leg, and the blue one on your right arm. Footsteps echo in the hallway behind him, and Chucho comes barrelling in the door.
"Mija?" he stands beside his son looking over your injuries.
"Are you her father?" the doctor asks with a stern look at the two of them. Chucho nodding as Javier whispers curses under his breath.
"Yes, we're her family," Javi steps onto the other side of the bed and takes your hand in his running his thumb over your knuckles.
"Well, she is damn lucky only to have a broken arm, leg, and concussion, it could have been a lot worse. No more climbing trees," he stares you down as you nod. "Let me get the paperwork started and you can take her home."
The doctor exits the room, and Chucho takes his place at your other side. "How did you know?" you whimper, tears pricking at your eyes.
"Your dad, fucker laughed when I asked where you are."
"Javier," Chucho scolds, "language."
"Sorry Pop," he mumbles not really sorry. "Why didn't you just come to my house?"
"I didn't want to bother you, I'm always over at your house."
"You are always welcome, Mija, Javier is right, you're family. You are never a burden to us." Chucho bends down and places a scratchy kiss on your forehead. "I'm going to go fill out the paperwork and then we are bringing you home with us."
Chucho leaves and Javi bounces from one foot to the next, still filled with anxious energy. "I thought," he stutters, tears flooding his cheeks, "I thought you died. When your dad told me about the fall."
You reach a hand out and brush the tear from his cheek, his hands coming up to wrap around your wrist, pressing his lips to your palm. "Please don't scare me like that again," he whispers closing his eyes but keeping your hand pressed to his lips.
"I promise, Javi, I promise."
The room was quiet, everyone paying attention to what the Professor was saying and presenting on the slides, with all those graphs and statistics that made Lily almost sleep with her eyes open. She loved her course, but calculus class wasn't her favorite, it wasn't even in her top three preferences.
Lily would rather have a full day of Environmental Chemistry with Professor Hagrid than one more with Burbage.
"Aren't you going to write down what she's saying?" Severus muttered beside her, making her nearly jump in her chair in fright, her heart racing at being pulled out of the quiet of her mind. "Hey, calm down."
"I already wrote down the important one." Lily shrugged, seeing her representation of the chart in the notebook and her lazy scribble of what the Professor had said.
"I won't lend you my notebook to study," he whispered, a smirk on his lips. Lily rolled her eyes, resting her head on her hand again, no longer listening to Burbage's voice.
Was it so early, why did she like to make students suffer like that?
"I don't need to, thanks." Severus didn't respond, but he kissed her on the cheek and then turned his attention back to class, much more interested than she was.
She still hadn't forgotten about their fight after the party Saturday, and all the embarrassment he put her through, and Lily was still hurting, even though she didn't understand why it hurt so much. He explained to her that he was trying to protect her, and the next day, he took her for brunch at her favorite restaurant, which was near a flower shop where Severus bought her flowers. Her favorites.
He was sorry, and Lily had to stop mulling things over even days after they had happened.
"Excuse me, Professor?" A female voice woke her, looking toward the door where one of the cheerleaders was standing.
The girl was beautiful, Lily had seen her before in the presentations in between games - the few she went to - and in the hallways of college; she had long brown hair and eyes almost the same color, and Lily knew the line of boys wanting her wasn't short.
“Say it, Miss Fortescue,” Burbage said, not looking overly excited at being interrupted. ‘I have no time to waste.’
“It'll be quick, I swear.” The girl walked into the room, wearing her red college sweatshirt and simple jeans, and even so, she looked stunning. Lily was a little jealous of her.
‘Me, and the Hogwarts Cheerleaders team, are passing by to remind you that applications to join the Team begin today. You need to have a minimal knowledge of ice skating, and be able to train three times a week, and twice a month on Saturdays. In addition to keeping in mind that if chosen, you will have to travel with us when necessary, and participate in our activities off the field.'’ She smiled, looking at everyone there waiting for questions or any interruptions, but when no one raised a hand, she continued;
‘’To apply you just need to talk to me, or any other cheerleader, and fill in the form. The tests will start next week, so you have plenty of time to think about whether you want to or not.” She waited a few more seconds, then smiled at the woman. "Thank you so much, Professor, excuse me." And she left.
Side conversations began, even though Burbage was trying to restrain the students, but Lily didn't care too much, wondering whether or not she should take the test. Of course she didn't have a body like the other girls, their waists looked almost unreal, but she could try, right? It looked so much fun the few times she watched it, and Lily had been balletting as a child until her mid-teens, when she started to put on weight and Petunia kept saying she was getting too fat to dance.
She could at least try. Maybe she couldn't get in, there were probably girls who had trained her entire life for it, Lily knew it was a competitive sport that many took very seriously, but… She could try.
Lily skated really well too, another reason she should try, and-
"You'd think she'd at least be embarrassed to appear in public, but no," Severus whispered, making Lily look at him not quite understanding what he was talking about, having once again become lost in her thoughts. "God, Lily, pay attention!"
‘‘Sorry, I was thinking. Who has to have courage?’’
‘‘Alice. That captain of the cheerleaders. She was seen having sex in the car with one of the players late last year… Such a bitch.” Severus rolled his eyes, looking almost offended by what she had done. ‘‘But what to expect, all are.’’
"I wanted to take the test," Lily whispered, feeling a weight drop in her stomach that made all her courage drain away.
'’Why? Do you want to wear those short skirts and show your ass for a bunch of men to see? And still call it dancing? Christ, Lily, have a little respect for yourself.” He turned forward, not seeming to want to hear her answer, but Lily ignored the movement and continued;
‘But… it looks so cool, and maybe I don't even come in and-’
‘Lils, I'm a man, listen to what I tell you, these girls don't dance because they like it, they dance because they want to have a dick to suck at the end of the day and get something in return; sometimes a higher note, or sometimes just the gratification of having sucked that dick. You're not like them, you don't need that.”
"Look who's here, our Geppetto!" Remus said, a wide grin on his face and the glass of orange juice raised to James, who was now bitterly regretting not having changed after his carpentry practice class.
"Dude, shut up." James chuckled, not even wanting to argue about how old this joke was getting and that they should try harder. "I can't believe we're not joking about the fact that Sirius needs to wear a wig in his class."
"We did, but you were late, mate." Remus seemed indifferent to James' attempt to shift his attention to Sirius, drinking all of his juice before looking at him more closely. "Marlene put makeup on you?"
"Yeah, is there a problem?" He put his hand to his jaw, no longer as purple and sore as it had been on Saturday, but still too disgusting an orange color to show everyone on the first day of his sophomore year. James had a bit of self-esteem even though it kept him from doing that. "It was horrible."
"Yeah, it's not pretty now." Peter pulled James' face to the side, wanting to see more detail, and that made the pain in the back of his neck return. "But it's better than before."
"Peter, my head." James pushed him away, touching where the back of his neck ached and trying to ease some of the pain that was still bothering him. The doctor had said it would hurt for a few more days, but James couldn't take the headaches anymore. "That asshole was lucky I was drunk."
"I still don't understand why he punched you," Sirius said, the pink wig still in his hands, trying to untangle the strands. "The girl said you didn't even touch her."
‘’I didn't touch it. Man, I don't even remember her face, I was trying to stay upright and not pass out right there, there were like ten redheads in front of me.’' He sighed, taking a sip of his own juice and denying it, still not believing he had stopped at the hospital because someone thought he was harassing the girl. "Was he her boyfriend?"
"I think so, but she didn't look too happy about what he'd done to you, so I don't know if they're still together," Remus said.
"Was she beautiful?" James didn't remember much of that night, least of all the details of her face, the only thing he could remember was that she was wearing an all-black outfit and had red hair. Everything else was just a blur in his mind.
"Yeah," Peter smiled. ‘’Was she wearing weird clothes? Yeah. I mean, who wears sweats to a party? But, she was beautiful. Don't you have a class with her?” He glanced at Remus, who looked like he was in another world as he watched a table next to theirs, full of girls chatting and laughing, one in particular standing with her back to them.
‘’Moony, if you keep drooling on Amelia like that, I'll punch you in the face. She kicked your ass, bro, part to another, forget about her.'’
"James, have you ever been in love yet?" James took a deep breath, thinking they would go back to that same subject Remus always brought up every time someone said something about his ex. '’Answer me.'’
"This wasn't love, Moony, it was a trap." James said the same thing every other time, but it was like he spoke to a wall when it came to Remus. It was frustrating. "She betrayed you."
“It was a slip.” He repeated as usual.
‘’Remus, slip was when I mistook James' aunt for his grandmother, and congratulated her on her 90th birthday. That was a slip. What did she do to you,” Sirius dropped his wig and looked at their friend, a tired smile on his face. It was the tenth time they had had that conversation. ‘It was low. She cheated on you the second you quarreled with her, without a second thought. Besides,” He held up a hand, preventing Remus from saying anything. "She never told you, you only knew because her friend felt sorry for you."
"She was going to tell me!"
"Let's not discuss this again." Peter interrupted the fight that was likely to ensue, but even if he hadn't, someone else did for them.
A girl stopped at their table, arms back and cheeks already on fire, she looked like she wanted to get inside a hole instead of being there.
"Hm. I’m sorry..er..." Her low voice was barely heard in the din in the cafeteria, but James was at the end of the table and could hear her speaking. It was the girl from the party, he recognized her sweet voice, her red hair was in a bun and she was wearing a sweatshirt today too, this time it wasn't black but dark blue, and James thought it didn't look comfortable because it wasn't that cold and that fabric seemed to be very thick and warm. ‘I came to apologize.’
"Sorry?" James looked at her, now everyone at the table was silently paying attention to her, and her cheeks got even hotter, which he thought was cute. Her green eyes fell on James, and he hated even more that he was wearing that ridiculous protective clothes.
"For what Sev did," She bit her bottom lip, filling her lungs with air and smiling gently afterwards. "I'm sorry he punched you."
'But…'
"You're not the one who should apologize," Sirius said, sitting at the other end, looking almost as shocked as James. The guy couldn't be such a coward, what did he think they were going to do, punch him up in the middle of the cafeteria?
The girl looked uncomfortable with this, but stayed there, stuffing her hands inside her sweatshirt pocket. ‘‘I know, but… He wasn't coming, but I'm going to feel really bad for not apologizing, because it was my fault, I- ''
"It wasn't your fault," James cut her off, pausing before placing a hand on her arm to soothe whatever was making her nervous. Who knows what her crazy boyfriend would do if he saw James touching her. "It's okay, really."
"You ended up in the hospital." She reminded him, not that James needed it, but he shrugged.
‘’Nothing too serious. And I was drunk, and…” He didn't know what to say, so opting to just smile at her. '’Everything is fine. If it makes you better, apologies accepted.”
"Sorry again, really," The girl said, her hand over her heart and a slightly sad smile on her face, seeming to notice the makeup on his jaw. James nodded, still not quite sure what to say or what to do, and she left.
'’Oh, I knew I knew her boyfriend.’' The four of them looked at the redhead walking back to her table, where three other guys dressed in black were, none of them looking at James' table but the boy next to her didn't look the least bit happy with her attitude, putting an arm around her shoulders in an almost possessive way. "She dates that idiot who tried to fight with Frank."
"Does he fight everyone then?" James continued to stare at her table, a bad feeling burning in his chest. He remembered that she looked so happy when he came to ask about his glasses, but then, now it seemed like there was none of that inside her anymore.
"He doesn't fight, he talks and talks, but when the time comes he runs away." Remus smiled humorlessly, pulling James back to look at him. "Don't want the three of them to come at you, just because one of them is a coward doesn't mean the others are too."
"She looked sad." Peter rambled. "Didn't she look like?"
“Dating a guy like that, who's happy?” James ran a hand through his hair, looking once more at the table the redhead had gone to before giving up and settling down on the bench, putting her image out of his mind and refocusing on Remus, who had turned to face Amelia again.
Lily was nervous, as if she was about to commit a horrible crime, her stomach churning and bile burning in her throat every time she focused her vision on that paper.
It was a mistake, a huge mistake, she shouldn't be there, she didn't even know how she got there. Get out of there Lily! She screamed to herself.
“Need help?” A voice startled her, her heart nearly leapt out of her body, and she ended up dropping the form to the floor, her shaking hands not even good enough to hold the paper. ‘Hey, I’m sorry. Everything is fine?'
"Yes, yes." Lily didn't look at the girl, but she knew who she was; Alice. Severus' voice reverberated in her mind, and she remembered Mulciber - Sev's best friend, who, like Avery, lived with them - saying; "You don't want everyone to think you're a bitch too, do you?" when Lily spoke of her willingness to take the test.
She thought they were wrong, she knew they were wrong, but her mind seemed unable to say anything against it at the time, her body paralyzed, just nodding and going back to eating, even though her hunger was gone.
'’Are you going to sign up?'’ Alice didn't seem to notice that Lily was uncomfortable however, because she went behind the now empty cafeteria table and sat on the bench there, looking at Lily in such a welcoming way that she felt guilty for not looking her in the eye. '’It's fun. We train a lot, but we are a family too, and as some girls are already graduating and leaving, we need new members.’’
"Family?" Lily looked at her, confused, blaming her mind that it was having to deal with the guilt of thinking she was a bitch, and the boys' voices telling her about her having sex in the car.
She's free to do whatever she wants, Lily thought, taking a deep breath.
‘’Yes, we take care of each other and make sure no one feels left out. If you need a house, we have room for you. It's just girls, no boys in there.” Alice took a folder from her purse, it was full of other completed forms, but at the bottom, there was a blank paper. She reached for Lily. "If you want it." She shrugged, and Lily saw it was another form, but this time, to rent a room.
"Oh I don't have to, I live with my boyfriend." Lily felt her cheeks flush, her eyes automatically returning to the team's blank form. Did she want this?
"But if you ever need to, we're always getting a spare room, just in case." Alice smiled. ‘’So having problems with the questions? I know there are many, but we need to know a lot before we call someone in. We've had bad experiences with this.’’
“I'm still wondering whether I'm going to try or not.” Why was she being so kind to her? Alice didn't know what everyone was calling her? Didn't she care?
‘’Do it. The most that can happen is that you won't be accepted.’’
"Yeah…I think it is." Lily nodded, swallowing the ball of nervousness that rose in her throat. "My boyfriend doesn't think I should apply." She didn't know why she'd said that, it just slipped off her tongue without going through her brain first, but as usual, Alice didn't seem to mind.
'’Why not? And you're the one training and dancing, so it's up to you to decide whether you want to or not.” She ran a hand through her brushed hair, and Lily noticed there was a silver ring on her finger. She dated the guy she had sex with in the car? Lily didn't know his name. '’Unless you have labyrinthitis… But, we already had a girl with labyrinthitis on the team, she didn't just participate in the spins, so there's nothing really stopping you from joining us.'’
"Yeah, maybe you're right." Lily took another deep breath, her nervousness lessening a little.
'Sit down.'
"What?" She looked up from her paper, Alice still with that welcoming look from before, but now more attentive.
"Sit down, you've been standing a long time." She did, placing her bag beside her and taking the pen firmly in her hand, signing her name at the top of the sheet, then moving on to the other questions.
Alice was quiet, doing something on her cell phone while Lily concentrated, trying not to show how anxious she was getting at such a silly and simple task. It was like her mind was hazy and the questions started to no longer make sense, Sev's voice telling her that Lily didn't need it because she wasn't like the other girls, making her even more nervous.
"Have you done any dancing yet?" Alice asked, but not taking her eyes off her cell phone.
‘’Ballet. As a child.” Lily glanced at her quickly before turning back to the paper, writing her age and course.
‘’I did artistic gymnastics, but I always wanted to do ballet. It's a very beautiful dance.’’
"Yes, it is." Lily took a deep breath, answering about her schedule and whether she was able to travel out of town during game season.
"I learned to skate when I got to college, Marlene taught me."
"She's also a cheerleader, right?" Alice looked at her, a sweet smile on her lips, then nodded.
"Many say you need to be afraid of her, but that's not true, Marlene is melted butter with the people she likes."
"I hope she likes me." Lily went back to ticking the form, and no, she wasn't using any narcotics or prescription drugs.
"She definitely will," Alive said, and she seemed to speak the truth, winking at Lily and then turning her attention back to her cell phone.
Welcome to another installment of random RRCAU fic, from the big, big universe that lives on the Ruby Lucas Harem Discord, because konako got that one random ask that time. (ask us about the insane College AU now, I dare you, we have answers you don’t even want)
So, if you follow that, have another scene. But this one is, heavy, because it’s all about the big dramatic death around the end of the second year. konako made me cry with the short snippet, so I will now repay that favor with the aftermath in a bit of a long form.
(this is towards the end of Ruby’s sophomore year at college, Granny has just died)
Ruby felt numb. If she could even call it feeling. But it’s either this or crying. And this is more helpful to get through tasks on auto-pilot. Sometimes there was the anger, now like an old friend. But it’s snapping at her friends, pounding the sandbag at the gym, running like mad on the field (Coach is a human after all, didn’t even make her do laps after clearly running the wrong plays). The last few days were a hazy blur. Food, hugging, a bit of sport, people, asking for an assignment extension.
And the phone call with Anita.
She was numb during that, too. And it was for the best. They both knew Granny wanted to be cremated. Just like her husband. But Ruby knew that she also wanted her ashes to be scattered like his. And Anita had said no. She had made arrangements for the urn to be buried. A small service and a burial. Ruby had said she’d be there.
“Whatever.”
A response Ruby knew well.
Regina and Mary Margaret had brought her to the airport. She was using up Regina’s miles again. But she didn’t argue. When she landed she thought she’d get herself to the trailer park somehow, maybe a car rental. Ruby hadn’t thought about that. There was something though. And yes, there was, Mary Margaret had told her - Eva was already waiting at the exit.
Another hug. Long. Warm. Welcoming. It brought Ruby out of the haze a bit, so new tears fell. Tears for Granny. Dead. The last bit of happy memories tied to that place her mind kept insisting on calling home.
“... you can sleep in Mary’s room and I’ll take you to the airport day after tomorrow of course.” Eva already had it planned out, telling her in the car. “Ruby? Is that all okay with you?” Ruby tore off her gaze from the scenery outside, pulling her head away from the glass of the passenger’s window.
“Can we go to the Terrace?” Suddenly the name sounded hollow. “I’d like to get a couple of things.” Maybe she would be too late. Maybe Anita had thrown everything out already.
“Right away?”
“If you don’t mind, please.”
“Of course not, honey.” Eva held the steering wheel with her left hand and put her right on Ruby’s knee, squeezing. Comfort. Reassurance. “Tell me what I can do and consider it done.”
The hint of a smile pulled on the corners of Ruby’s mouth. This was Eva. This had always been Eva, even when she didn’t understand it. She got things done for her.
Pulling up at the trailer park felt strange. For one it was because Ruby was sitting in a nice car. Not rushing through the side entrance on her bike. It was also because Ruby could count the times she’d been here in the almost past two years and every time she got away from it, the place seemed smaller and further away. But mostly, without Granny this was just a glorified parking lot with a bit of green.
Eva parked and waited. Ruby unfastened her seat-belt, but she couldn’t get out. She looked over. Ruby didn’t know if she wanted to go in alone. If she could. Was it better to have Eva there as back-up? Or was that disrespectful?
“I… would you… can you maybe come with me? I don’t know if…” She didn’t know if she could even step a foot inside or would crumble at the front door the way she had days ago in front of her dorm.
“I’m right behind you.” Eva smiled. The warm mom-smile.
Ruby didn’t know if Anita would be here now. She didn’t bother knocking though and didn’t need a key. Nobody needed a key to get in, when you knew the lock wasn’t working properly and all you needed to do was lift the front door at the right angle and push hard.
Ruby opened her mouth, but closed it immediately to not say hallo into the void. Everything looked mostly as expected. There were a few empty alcohol bottles stacked next to the kitchen sink, Anita had been digging in. But she still got herself together to not let them lie around. Maybe that was good. Maybe that was something to care about.
Suddenly her home - the trailer - looked depressing. More than usual. Granny wasn’t sitting outside or lying in bed. The tiny tv was not running. That specific background noise missing was a big deal. Sure, Granny had been in and out of the hospital, but the finality was felt.
Ruby breathed in, the hitch alerted Eva and she touched her on her back, steadied her. The smell. Oh the smell was home. The mix of the cheap laundry detergent, the sharp air freshener, the lingering scent of Granny mixed with Anita’s aggressive perfume. It smelt a bit different than she remembered, but that was probably herself missing from this equation for a long time now.
Slowly Ruby stepped towards the bedroom. The smell of Granny got stronger. Without thinking about it she sat down on the bed. The linens crisp and clean, waiting for someone to sleep here again. There were pills on the nightstand. The little tub with daily doses already in order. Ruby picked it up. Monday and Tuesday were empty, she looked at Wednesday and the morning was missing. Right, after that Granny had called an ambulance. Thursday’s pills were untouched. Thursday had been the last time she had seen her. Ever.
Anita hadn’t touched anything in here as far as Ruby could tell. It was a surprise. Maybe she didn’t know what to do with all the stuff. And maybe, just maybe, there was more emotional baggage inside of her and she couldn’t let go of her mother. She had never left either. She could have. She could have let Granny rot alone in here and not just disappear a few days at a time, but forever. And yet Anita had always come back. Despite everything.
Ruby put the pill box back down and grabbed the framed photo. It was Granny’s wedding picture. She had never stopped loving that man that barely had time to get to know his own daughter and who never knew that his memory lived in a granddaughter he never met at all. They were a handsome couple. This was one of three pictures she knew she wanted above all else.
Her hand was already under the bed, searching the shoe box stashed there. Yes. She opened it and was greeted with all the letters she had sent home the last two years. It felt like so little, but she knew it had meant much. Granny had taken the photos from some of these out and put them on the wall next to the tv. But the pictures Ruby was searching were underneath it all.
An old black and white photograph. More brownish actually, genuine sepia, grainy, worn on the edges. It was Granny as a child with her three older brothers. It was the only thing Ruby knew of, that even proved they once had been alive. Before that fateful accident. Three brothers and their father, all gone in one go.
This family was cursed. Mothers and daughters left. And Granny’s mother hadn’t made it much longer on her own. Maybe Granny and Ruby got along, because they skipped a generation between. Mothers and daughters gave each other plenty of resentment.
And then there was the third picture. Granny with her dear husband and a fancy new car. The red Camaro had been out of their price range, but on their anniversary they had gone to the dealership, got a long test drive out of it and made that a date. Granny had talked about that day a lot. Grandfather promised them a brighter future where they would be able to afford a car like that. Not just stealing fake moments, but creating happy ones for real.
That had never happened.
Granny had deserved more and yet life had rejected her. But she had held on. Despite her heart condition, the many losses of family members around her, the slipping into poverty. Granny had always held on. For over 80 years. Nobody had thought that would even be possible. So maybe it was okay to say goodbye now. Now that Ruby understood how Granny could look at a picture of her dead husband for hours and feel nothing but love.
Ruby put the frame into the shoe box, then her gaze fell onto the chair. Granny’s knitted cardigan hung over the back. She’d always worn that grey monstrosity, though it was unflattering even on her. Ruby got to her feet and picked it up. She buried her face in the fabric. Granny. Yes, she wanted this. The pictures, her own letters, the cardigan. It meant something.
Tears began to fall again. Ruby wasn’t numb at all. Breathing in all the memories came rushing back. Sitting on Granny’s lap during Christmas story time; teaching her the sacred lasagna recipe; listening to unimportant happenings at school; the encouraging words when Anita’s indifference turned into vile insults; daydreaming of long trips with fingers on the maps of an old atlas; sitting in front of Granny’s bed, eating something from the microwave and letting Granny catch her up on her soaps. There had been love.
Eva had been silent all this time and given Ruby space. Now she stepped closer and wrapped her up in her arms. Ruby hugged the cardigan and felt Eva kissing her on the head. This was goodbye. But she wouldn’t be alone.
The service was lovely, but what really got to Ruby was seeing people attending. She had thought she’d be there alone with Anita, maybe Eva in the back. But there were a few neighbors. Mrs. Johnson even gave her a quick hug, she had come by like once a month to do Granny’s hair for free, but really it was about the conversation. Nurse Wilcox had retired herself three years ago, but before she had worked at the doctor’s office Granny got her subscriptions from. She had seen the tiny ad in the paper and wanted to pay her respects, remembering one of her favourite patients.
A part of Ruby wanted to scream, because she knew burying the urn in the dirt was wrong. Even though Anita had picked a nice little headstone. Ruby knew this was money she couldn’t really afford to spend. But causing a scene in the cemetery was the last thing she would do. She’d rather run away and not attend at all, while more than a dozen people paid their respects.
There wasn’t much said between Ruby and Anita. Who cared about one more argument and hollow questions about their current living situations? Ruby would remember the way Eva kept holding her hand, let her ramble through incoherent memories and tugged her into Mary’s bed. (Something Ruby rejected by getting up at night to sleep in the treehouse, the cardigan close to her chest.)
And when summer came around, Ruby would clean a whole week out of her schedule. No summer class, no work, not anybody around. Maybe it was irresponsible to blow through a portion of her savings, but she found a car rental that could get her that red 1975 Chevrolet Camaro. And maybe it was called grave robbing, but she dug up Granny’s urn and put her on the passenger’s seat. A week on the road right up to the beach where Granny had scattered her husband’s ashes.
That would be Ruby’s last goodbye. When she finally could let go of the woman, who had mostly raised her. The road trip they had talked about in giggling voices.
Turning into the parking lot was hard. And just when Ruby doubted she could scatter these ashes alone, she spotted Regina waiting for her. She had send so many texts to her friends and called to let them know she was okay, that Regina knew when she would arrive at her destination. Regina, who had been there when Ruby had last spoken to Granny. Fitting. Granny’s final blessing.
What about if ghost mike took a liking to you and when you were getting harassed by some guys he "stepped in"?
Oh wow this one really got away from me! There’s something about Mike that makes me just want to hug him and make everything better. Thank you for this ask!
Tumblr media
Warnings: Ghosts, potential assault, Mike saving the day. Canon-fix-it ficlet.
From the moment you moved into the tiny apartment you knew it wasn't going to be your forever home. Strange chills would cross over your skin when you would least expect it, the seemingly nice neighbourhood was far from it with regular arguments and fights breaking out between tenants or people just out on the street, and it got to the point where you didn't leave the apartment at night for what crept unknown in the hallways.
Your thesis was almost done, your final year of your Doctorate on religious texts and the only merit of not leaving the apartment in the evenings meant extra time to study and complete your work. You sat at your desk typing furiously, on a roll with your thoughts and your work when a sudden chill ran up your forearm giving you goosebumps;
"Fuck" you cursed, screwing your eyes shut as you tried to will the train of thought back to your mind, but to no avail. Finally with a sigh you pushed your chair back and stood, deciding to make yourself a hot cocoa.
Warming the milk in a pan on the stove you wrapped your cardigan tighter around your body as you stared out of the window that overlooked the street, before something moved in the periphery of your vision. A young man bending over your laptop, his lips moving as he silently read what you had written. In shock you gasped and turned, but to an empty apartment. Shaking your head you laughed to yourself; you had spent so long writing about spirits you were now seeing them.
Going back to your stove you finished making your drink before returning to your computer, working late into the night now you were re-energised in your mind.
-
Your Professor had been very complimentary of your latest work, and how you had led the Freshman and Sophomore students in theological discussions about spirits and souls, almost as if you had a new understanding of them.
Continuing to work on your thesis you spent long nights and quiet weekends busy at your computer, but reminded yourself to take a break now and again. One such evening the words hadn't come, so abandoning the screen you’d lit some candles, poured yourself a glass of wine and had curled up on the couch beneath a blanket to read. You were deep in the world of your book when you were aware of your computer screen coming to life, the screensaver ending and your unfinished work on screen. As you looked up you saw him, this time sitting sideways to the desk on your chair where you’d left it.
He was young, no more than 25, and dressed a little outdated in baggy jeans, hoodie, and a leather jacket, his dark hair curly and trying its best to hang in the mid 2000’s style of curtains. A fear shot through your body, rooting you to the spot and you held your breath; watching waiting… but he continued to read, biting his lip as if deep in thought; he had no idea you’d noticed him. The longer you looked the more real he seemed, no longer transparent but the colours of the apparition deepening.
“I can see you, you know” your voice was quiet yet it startled him, he turned in fright and disappeared right before your eyes.
Crossing the room you pressed your hand to the chair, stilling it as it span slightly before sitting down, your writer's block now long gone. Your thesis was certainly getting jump started again thanks to your spectral visitor.
-
A week later it was a quiet weekend, no saturday classes, no additional work needed on your thesis until the last few books you’d requested from the campus library were returned. Snow fell outside your window and you stayed curled up in bed, dozing in the quiet morning.
As the pipes in the building bubbled you finally woke properly, and you saw him, standing in the doorway.
“Don’t be scared” you said quietly, watching as he quietly laughed before raking his hand through his curls;
“Shouldn’t i be saying that to you?”
His voice was quiet, but deeper than you imagined.
“Do you know why you are here?”
He shook his head.
“Are you drawn to something? Did you die here?”
Again he shook his head;
“I can’t remember”
“What do you remember?”
“That my name is Mike” he looked down, almost bashfully; “You realise one tit is hanging out of your top?”
Glancing down you saw your cami had shifted in your sleep and you were now showing far more than you realised, letting out a laugh as you adjusted yourself, but when you looked up he was gone.
Calling out you smiled;
“Thanks for the tip… or should i say tit?”
You heard what could only be described as a chuckle, but he didn’t reappear.
-
Over the following days and weeks, Mike would appear occasionally. Once when you were reaching for something on a high shelf you’d turned to get a box to stand on only to discover the packet on the countertop and him standing next to it with a smile on his face before disappearing again. You became at ease with his presence, your skin chilling as you recognised the signs that he had appeared in the room. He still didn’t talk much but you’d managed to get a few lines of conversation out of him. It almost felt like having a presence to welcome you home, not a pet, but a silent roommate that didn’t bother you because you’d work different shifts.
After one particularly long day on campus, staying late after class to help the Sophomores with their midterms, having to stop for groceries on the way home, it was well past dark before your bus had pulled up outside your apartment building. Juggling your groceries, your backpack, and your keys, you stopped at your mailbox as you could see mail jammed into it, cursing as your cold fingers struggled to work with the tiny key when you heard a cough behind you. Glancing over your shoulder you saw the tall burly figure of a man, and you stepped closer to the mailbox;
“Sorry, won’t be a moment”
“Don’t you worry sweetheart, we can wait…”
You stopped, the fear bubbling up in your throat as you turned and saw that he wasn’t alone, two other men now standing behind him;
“A nice little treat to be found out after dark…”
You turned your back to the mailboxes, pulling close to them as you backed away and the three men started to advance like a pack of wolves, when suddenly another figure appeared in the doorway;
“Mike!” you called out, and the three men turned in surprise.
“Oh, your little boyfriend appears just in time? Don’t you worry about him, he can just watch”
It was then that you heard Mike’s voice, strong and loud in the small hallway;
“Babe, shut your eyes and don’t open them until i say so, ok?” he paused and looked directly at you; “Ok?”
You nodded and screwed your eyes shut, trembling as you hear the three men start towards Mike, but then you could hear them stop;
“What the fuck?”
“HOLY SHIT!”
“RUN, GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!”
A strange gurgling noise came from the end of the hallway and you felt the rush of air as the three men pushed past you. Opening your eyes you gasped when you saw Mike.
“I said don’t open your eyes!”
“Stop” His voice gurgled as he spoke.
You stepped towards him, the sight almost unbearable but now you understood;
“I can see what happened to you…” you paused; “And i’m not running away”
-
 Stepping in the door of your apartment you juggled the bags and held the door for Mike, before you smiled;
“Do i even need to hold this open for you, or could you just walk straight through it?”
He glanced at you and rolled his eyes, not saying anything.
“I would offer you to get cleaned up, but i have no idea how to clean a ghost up”
You set the groceries on the counter and turned, surprised to see Mike standing close to you, his injuries gone and his face and stomach back to normal;
“Oh!”
“I guess you just had to look away and i reset somehow” he muttered, his body sagging as if exhausted.
“This may sound strange, but do you need to rest? I would imagine what you did took a lot of energy…”
“I don’t like to sleep… the memories come back when i do…”
“Why don’t i rest with you?”
Reaching out you managed to grasp his hand, gently leading him to your bedroom and watching as he lay back against the soft covers, a tired smile on his face as he watched you climb in beside him;
“When i was alive it was never this easy to get a girl into bed with me” he murmured, his eyes drooping.
“Just rest Mike, i’ll be right beside you… i’ll protect you the same way you protected me”
Leaning forwards you brushed your lips to his, and it felt like wet sand pulling away from you as the tide pulled back to sea. Resting your head on the pillow you felt your own eyes grow heavy, and as you watched Mike fall asleep the same happened to you.
-
Rain hit the window as you slowly woke, the unfamiliar feeling of a warm presence beside you in bed startling you as you sat bolt upright, looking on in shock as Mike slept peacefully beside you. His chest would rise and fall with each breath, and with a shaking hand you reached out and rested your palm against him and could feel the warmth of his body. Eyes wide in wonder you reached to his neck, pressing two fingers to the side and you felt the steady and strong beat of his heart.
He woke with a gasp, inhaling as if he had been winded and sat up, his eyes wide as he grasped your hand in his own;
“How are you touching me?”
“Y-you’re real” He looked down, watching as your hand pressed against his chest; “and you’re alive”
You leapt at him, wrapping your arms around his shoulders as you straddled his lap, laughing with tears of joy starting to spill down your cheeks before finally pulling back, your mouths so close you could feel the others breath hot on your skin.
“When i was alive… i mean before… i was an ass”
You shrugged;
“Most dudes in their 20’s are”
“And i thought i was god’s gift to women too, but was far from it”
“How about we leave the opinions of gods to the one of us that is the Theological major? As whatever happened here, we have someone to thank and it certainly isn’t Earth bound”
He smiled, and for the first time you noticed that in the blue of his eyes there was a tiny spec of brown. His voice was quiet;
“Can I kiss you?”
Nodding you edged forwards, the touch of his lips this time was soft and warm, and as the kiss deepened the two of you slowly fell back onto the bed, your bodies warm against each others as clothing was shed and bodies were explored.
Mike had a lot to catch up on, twenty years after life had ended for him you were now there to help him start it back up again.
Music for the Soul
Summary: Soulmate AU where the song your soulmate is thinking of gets stuck in your head.
This fic is inspired by and gifted to @yellowpaintpots.
Notes:  canonical, this is S2 E6 and a little beyond but it’s not exactly like the show obviously.
Kurt Hummel was used to not fitting in. At McKinley High, he was often an odd man out. He did partner projects alone, he held his tongue around bullies and had no one to complain to, and most days, he had an entire lunch table to himself. No one sat with the kid in weird, homemade clothes unless there was no other choice.
What kept him going was music. He had one earbud in as he walked down the halls. Choosing from playlists his mother used to listen to, Broadway soundtracks sung by people still performing on stage today, and to the thrill of his father, rock classics. If Burt Hummel had passed anything onto his son, it was his music tastes and the fantastical idea of soulmates.
The image of a white knight coming to save him by serenade was one that haunted him before he fell asleep. A boy, which little eleven-year-old Kurt held close to his heart, picked out by the universe meant just for him. Even when he started to find the fantasy a little too cheesy, it kept Kurt going until he found the glee club.
No one could touch him or change him because there was someone out there who would love him exactly the way he was.
The New Directions were a hot mess when they started, of course. The 5 of them weren’t winning any competitions when they first found themselves in the choir room but they were five misfits who finally had friends. People who understood the passion of music and an adult who shared that same passion and would hopefully guide them to their dream futures.
Just months later, they became a mixture of a dozen sophomores and freshmen with a Sectionals win under their belt all ready to face the Dalton Academy Warblers in a few weeks. With Regionals looming over them, glee had become much messier than usual. With plenty of in-fighting about solos and song choices, the choir room was always a jumbled, loud mess. That is until Mr. Schue came up with the idea for a school musical. It was taking their minds off of Regionals for the time being.
Kurt was all too happy to be auditioning for a role instead of sitting in the back row wishing he had a shot at a solo. His voice was too unique for Ohio. But someday, he knew, it would get him to Broadway. He held that thought close to his heart while tuning out Rachel’s insistence bickering.
Yesterday, Mr. Schue had decided their school musical was going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Kurt loved cult classics as much as the next person but he wasn’t sure how Mr. Schue had gotten this approved by Figgins. It seemed too risqué for high schoolers.
He only hoped whoever his soulmate was enjoying the soundtrack he had stuck in his head this week.
Kurt planned on auditioning for Riff Raff. Already putting mental outfits from his closet to wear. The wound of Mr. Schue assuming he’d play Frank N. Furter based solely on the fact that he was gay was still fresh but his audition was going to blow everyone away.
He had chosen “Dammit Janet” for his audition despite it being a Brad and Janet duet. Quinn, who was hoping for Magenta, was going to be his partner. They had joked about the main roles already being off the table before auditions; it was clear Mr. Schue had chosen Finn and Rachel for the leads. It was hard to be upset when Quinn had instantly offered to do a joint audition with him. Their voices went so well together and Kurt liked spending time with her.
Ever since Kurt and Mercedes had their stint as Cheerios, they had gotten closer. The three of them even had a weekend sleepover this past Saturday. Mercedes had dumped the Cheerios but Kurt stayed on and Quinn had just gotten back on the squad after her dismissal last year. Coach Sue had them sing during practice last week and Quinn was waiting for him after their showers with the suggestion of a double audition song.
They had been having rehearsals in the auditorium during their shared free period and twice after glee club on days when it wasn’t already reserved. As the day came closer, Quinn offered her house to practice in since her parents were rarely home and so Finn wouldn’t become Rachel's spy. Though, Kurt assured her Finn was much too engrossed in video games to bother with their rehearsals.
Since they increased their run-throughs, Kurt’s had one song in his head all morning. In case the lyrics weren’t already ingrained into his head, he had his own little concert in his head. Just after lunch, that changed. A mere 3 hours until his audition after school his soulmate’s music had taken root. As much as Kurt was willing to bow down to the queens of pop, what he wouldn’t give for 5 minutes of something other than Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”. This bubble gum pop song had gone from ‘oh, that’s a good song to scream in the car’ to ‘if I hear it one more time, I’ll rip my ears off’ fairly quickly.
It hadn’t helped that his brain went from one song on repeat to another.
As he sits in geometry, he tries to hear Mr. Finnegan’s explanation of arcs but his brain has other plans.
Let you put your hands on me in my skin tight jeans.
Kurt knows it’s just a song but the image is so clear in his head.
Smooth, soft skin. Obviously, someone who used lotions regularly, Kurt expected nothing less from his soulmate. Neatly trimmed fingernails so they wouldn’t catch on Kurt’s pants when fingers trailed up to cup his knee. The grip would be teasingly light. He never let his fantasies get too far. Especially outside the privacy of his bedroom. In all honesty, even when he was alone in his bed at night envisioning the same kind of scenario, Kurt didn’t really know what came next. He wasn’t even sure what kissing really entailed.
What if his soulmate is ready for...certain things...Kurt’s not even to verbalize yet. What if he’s imagining their first meeting very differently then Kurt, who’s hopeful they’ll have coffee or a meal together before they do anything besides maybe hand-holding. The touch of the fingertips is as sexy as it gets, unless you ask Katy Perry it seems.
He spends the rest of math wondering what the boy with Katy Perry in his head must look like. Kurt wonders if his soulmate wears bright colors like his idol or maybe Katy is a secret shame that he’ll only share with Kurt.
Blaine liked fitting in. He enjoyed the uniform for many reasons. One, he thought the blazer looked stylish. It was also nice knowing what you had to wear every day, one less thing to worry about people judging you for. Plenty of people at his old school picked on him for his bow ties but at Dalton, everyone had neckwear. The standard blue and red striped tie. He liked how neat it was; there was a certain way to wear said uniform.
Everyone was the same here. No typical hierarchy of jocks and cheerleaders. Only the Warblers stood out simply because everyone knew them.
How could you forget a group of boys singing acapella at all hours of the day?
 Blaine might joke that they’re teenage rockstars but really they are just a group of talented guys who liked to sing.
The Warblers were the first real friends he ever had.
When he was still attending public school he held tightly to the idea of his soulmate since it seemed hopeless to wish for friendship. Not when he was being harassed for a sexuality he wasn’t sure of yet and being pushed to the ground in the parking lot for it.
But a soulmate was a guarantee. Everyone had one. By the time Blaine reached eighth grade, he knew. All of those middle school bullies had used words Blaine didn’t quite understand until that moment.
He was surrounded in the parking lot after school having missed his bus because someone had stuck gum in his curls during last period. That was the day Blaine started to seriously consider investing in some gel. Maybe that would prevent some bullying. Anyway, he was surrounded, being literally kicked around by a group of soccer players and friends.
Other students had gathered to watch the so-called fight but Blaine thought their chants would only grab the attention of a teacher or so he hoped. No one came quickly. He had enough injuries by the end for his mom to insist on a trip to the ER. A big black eye and sprained his wrist along with plenty of bruising on his limbs.
But he honestly didn’t remember getting hurt beyond the initial pushing to the ground. When the bullying got bad like this he pulled out those daydreams. This time around it wasn’t this blurry image of hand holding, there was a boy. Blaine hadn’t seen his face but his voice was soft and comforting, inviting Blaine in. There was an outstretched hand just out of reach for Blaine to take. Blaine knew then. His soulmate was a boy.
When everything was over and he was being released by the doctor, all he knew was there was some boy built perfectly for Blaine just waiting to be found. Waiting for him.
He hadn’t even been upset by his injuries because he was sitting with these thoughts of ‘how do I come out to my parents?’
Instead of deciding that day, he kept those daydreams close to his heart for the next year and a half. Until the issue of high school came out and Blaine didn’t want to go back to public school. To his surprise, both of his parents took it well. They were more concerned for his safety than his sexuality. Together, they decided on Dalton. A private school with a zero tolerance policy for bullies. That was that.
He still had his doubts at Dalton. Was he really good enough to be a lead soloist let alone go onto Broadway someday? Could he make it out of Ohio? In those moments, Blaine still came back to his soulmate. Someone, no matter what came, Blaine would have by his side.
When he imagined his soulmate, Blaine could never truly figure out what he’d look like. All he saw was that outstretched hand. Usually, people could draw up a picture in their heads based on the music they heard.
For Blaine, the genre of music didn’t help. His soulmate was clearly someone with mixed taste.
Today’s selection was...a musical. Blaine wasn’t familiar with the characters Brad and Janet but he had looked it up at lunch. Some kind of cult classic people went to see in the weeks leading up to Halloween. It was October so it made sense for the soundtrack to be stuck in his soulmate’s head. Blaine wondered if he had gone to see it, wondered who he saw it with.
The Warblers thought he was crazy. Imagining that his soulmate was off with some other person. It was rare to date seriously before meeting a soulmate but Blaine always told them the same story of his parents. Both of them had been in very serious relationships before they met. Hell, his mother had been engaged. Neither of them thought they’d meet their soulmate, which was also fairly rare but had happened.
When they met, they didn’t drop everything to be together. The wedding was put on hold but his father hadn’t broken up with his girlfriend right away. His parents wanted to be together only if they agreed with the universe’s choice.
Blaine knew his dad had been wary of his mother’s music taste. Pam had been deep into her metal phrase in her early twenties. His dad, Robert, was not a fan. He loved classical music. Forever dooming Pam to hum music without lyrics meanwhile Robert was cursed with “nonsense yelling” as he called it. Lucky, both of their music tastes had shifted over the years to have more overlap. Though, Blaine and Cooper had been subjected to dinners with a mixtape of Def Leppard and Bach.
They got together in the end, which was the important part, but what if they hadn’t chosen each other? What if Blaine’s soulmate was deeply in love with someone else and he’d spend the rest of his days loveless and alone?
When he voiced these thoughts aloud, his friends usually told him what a downer he could be, which tended to shake those fears away. If his parents, different as they were, still fell in love it would happen to him too. It was just a matter of when.
The next day at lunch, Mercedes was fretting over her soulmate.
“What if he’s super young, Kurt?”
“What makes you think that?” He asked, stabbing his salad.
“He’s got The Backyardigans theme song in his head again,” she sighed. “He got to be like 7. I’m just not comfortable with that.”
“It’s an age gap for sure,” Kurt agreed, but he’s fairly sure Sam Evans was singing that song after PE today, “or maybe he just has younger siblings. Don’t let your only-childness cloud your judgment.”
She hummed in agreement and pushed her tater tots around.
It was sort of a hard way to figure out your soulmate unless they were obvious about what music they had playing in their heads.
Some people, like Mr. Schue, we’re pretty obvious. He had been singing in the auditorium when Ms. Pillsbury found him. It was a pretty clear-cut match. As far as Mercedes was concerned, Kurt is sure she’ll overhear Sam’s humming soon enough.
He doesn’t want to spoil anything for his best friend nor does he want to be wrong. Soulmate meetings only come once in a lifetime.
Well, the first soulmate meeting that is.
There are plenty of people, like his dad, who lose a soulmate too soon and are gifted another one later in life. Kurt was so happy when he introduced Burt and Carole at parent-teacher conferences. They had just been listening to the Wicked soundtrack in the car ride over and Carole Hudson did not strike Kurt as the type of person who knew “I’m Not That Girl” by heart.
“Are you nervous about auditions?” Mercedes asked. “The list goes up today after glee.”
“Not at all like,” he shrugged, “I think Quinn and I did well.”
“Oh no, Kurt, we crushed it,” Quinn said, sitting down with her lunch.
He smiled at her. Quinn went on to compliment Mercedes on her audition, having heard part of it from outside the audition. She would’ve been inside with Kurt to watch but Coach Sue wanted to meet with her head Cheerio about their upcoming competition. From what Quinn had told them via text, Sue was going all out at practice today.
“She doesn’t want us to be late,” Quinn said. “That list better be up right away.”
“We should change before glee,” Kurt suggested.
“Good idea.”
Once Quinn had sat down the rest of the New Directions filed in. With interlocking pinkies, Santana and Brittany wandered over taking the last two seats available.
“Cheerios practice is gonna be hell, hope you’re up for the challenge Hummel,” Santana said.
He shot her a short glare.
“Kurt always understands the assignment, Santana,” Quinn quipped back.
Brittany nodded in agreement smiling at Kurt from across the table. She gave him a small wave half hidden by her lunch tray. In return, Kurt waved back just as shyly.
They had an interesting friendship. Kurt had kissed Brittany before. He was sure it hadn’t phrased Brittany as it had him. After all, she had kissed almost every boy in school. Some kind of record, he thought.
They sort of dated for like a week when Kurt was trying to convince himself he was straight. When he firmly realized he was kidding no one, not even himself, they broke up. Since then, he and Brittany had remained close. They were both Cheerios and in the glee club, it made sense.
He was happy to have Brittany in his life, even if that meant Santana by extension came with her. Santana was fine outside of the public eye. If the Unholy Trinity incited Kurt to their sleepovers, Santana was a different person. She put up a front at McKinley, extremely similar to the one Kurt attempted when he dated Brittany.
Few are privy to why she did this, Quinn and Kurt knew and he was fairly certain Mercedes did as well. She was very perceptive that way. Brittany was Santana’s soulmate. It explained so much about their relationship. Always in sync, completing each other perfectly, a literal better half.
Honestly, it gave Kurt so much hope that everyone’s soulmate was like that. A missing puzzle piece.
He really hoped his soulmate listened to more than just Teenage Dream because the lyrics were slowly creeping into his everyday language.
Usually, Kurt found himself hyper-focused in glee club. He got an energy boost just from walking into the choir room. Like a light switch turning on. His focus wasn’t always on whatever lecture Mr. Schue was pursuing, sometimes he watched his fellow glee clubbers (catching himself up on drama just by sideways glances), or mentally mapping out his next performance.
Today, Kurt wasn’t able to do any of those things. With the soundtrack of Teenage Dream (again) in his head, all he was thinking about was the center of a bulletin board with the cast list for The Rocky Horror Show on it. How far down the list was Riff Raff? How many names came before his?
Someone was snapping in front of his face. Kurt shook himself from his daydream to find Mercedes.
“Boy, wake up!” She said, “cast list is about to go up.”
Either glee club had gotten shorter or Mr. Schue was putting it up early.
Blaine didn’t really understand why the Warblers were concerned. Doing an improv performance was not new to them. In fact, Blaine had done three already this school year and he was only a freshman.
The first one he did had been way back in September, he hadn’t even been an official Warbler yet. Warbler Tradition said: all potential freshman recruits were required to perform again after their auditions with the whole group. It was a solid way to see if they fit in well with the other established Warblers. Blaine fondly remembers vibing along with the older Warblers and fellow potentials to a medley of Pink songs. None of the freshmen had solos but it was still a fun time.
At the time it seemed like all of Dalton fit into the choir room and surrounding hallways but in reality it was the entire freshman class. Improv performances weren’t something any middle schooler had seen before but the upperclassmen of Dalton knew the Warblers had plenty of improvs to come for the rest of the school year. The first one was special. Just for the newbies.
Three days after that performance, Blaine had gotten word that he was to be a new Warbler and two months after that he was granted his first solo. Now, he was slowly becoming their go-to soloist for almost every performance for an audience. Blaine had become a vital part of all rehearsals for the most part. He was honored by their commitment to him honestly and he loved to sing however, a week and half of preparations was a tad excessive. Still, he walked his way to rehearsal positive that the council would have at least five points to discuss before they actually started singing.
He walked into the choir room shaking his shake fondly and smiling at the Warblers already present.
The council were always first to arrive. Together. Then it was a mixed bag of who followed. Usually Trent was there, punctual as always, and Blaine took the seat between Trent and Jeff.
The room was mostly full already.
Nick came in shortly after Blaine and sat across from him immediately asking if there had been a pop quiz in Stanton’s class earlier and was rather relieved to find out Jeremy was a filthy liar, who liked to start trouble. Before Jeremy could get on Blaine’s case about being overly sincere, the meeting began.
Wes banged his gavel and welcomed everyone before gesturing for David to read off last meeting’s notes. Once the talking portion of the meeting was over, they pushed the furniture aside to make room.
...
A week later Kurt was happy to have one musical under his belt but thankful the performance run had been short. If you thought the New Directions were dramatic during competition weeks, it was nothing compared to their musical rehearsals.
Now, Mr. Schue was having the brilliant idea to host a boys vs girls competition. Of course, Kurt hadn’t wanted to work with the boys. They were sure to exclude his musical talents and he doubted he could get them to agree to any of his costume suggestions.
This was hardly a challenge. It was bland and they had done it already.
Kurt was sitting in the back of the choir room pouting. Yes, pouting. Full on arms crossed, head down, and bottom lip puffed out. Until, Mr. Schue had an actual brilliant idea, Kurt’s suggestion of course, to spice things up.
The boys did not appreciate Kurt’s six hours of work putting two posters together. Even with the assignment to bring more feminine qualities into their performance, the boys ignored his input. So, when Puckerman suggested Kurt spy on the Warblers, he was thankful for a reason to leave. He packed up his projects and headed home to change.
When Mr. Schue found out who their competition was, Rachel and Kurt did some googling. He had seen the all-boys school uniform and was fairly sure he could replicate it with clothes he already had.
He pulled some looks from his closet. Once satisfied he looked up directions to Westerville.
Dalton was huge. It looked like a museum. How on earth was Kurt going to find their choir room? He hoped there were signs inside or a map.
As he walked down a spiral staircase much too pretty to be in a school, he decided to just ask for directions. He was going to get lost if he kept walking without help.
When the boy he stopped turned around, all Kurt could think was ‘I’d love to put my hands all over you.’ Which was a ridiculous thought to have because he didn’t know this boy and where had that even come from? Oh right, Teenage Dream was still playing in his head. Thanks, Katy.
If only his soulmate knew he was using this song to fantasize about running off into the sunset with another boy.
Blaine loved being in the spotlight. Wes would say it was because he didn’t get that kind of attention from his parents but that simply wasn’t true. Well, unless Cooper was around; he always pulled focus when it came to their parents. Older sibling privilege, he assumed.
But he was running late. He stayed behind in class to ask a question which turned into his teacher rambling. Didn’t he know the Warblers had a performance today in the senior commons and Blaine was their lead singer?
He was checking the time when someone stopped him on the stairs.
A beautiful boy. Unlike anyone Blaine had ever seen before. He almost missed his name because he was caught up in memorizing his face.
There was something said about being new, which Blaine doubted since he wasn’t in uniform, and Blaine mentioned a shortcut he knew of.
It wasn’t really a shortcut. More like the long way to the Senior Commons but less crowded. Everyone was making their way to the Warblers and Blaine wanted as much time alone with Kurt as he could get.
He wanted Kurt’s full attention. It was no wonder he instantly wanted to show off. Teenage Dream fit his vocals perfectly and Kurt was an excellent audience. In fact, Blaine was set on serenading him.
He had no way of knowing that exact song had been playing all day long in Kurt Hummel’s mind.
Afterward, Blaine lost himself in a group hug from the Warblers but Kurt’s beaming smile caught his eye. He pulled Wes and David aside, confirming his own suspicions that Kurt was spying on them first before convincing them to invite Kurt for coffee.
The four boys sat at a table. Kurt seemed very nervous now. Blaine wasn’t sure if it was because he had been caught or something else was going on. In the end, Blaine thought it best for just him and Kurt to have a conversation. Not at all because he wanted alone time with him.
This clearly wasn’t the time or place for romance.
Once they were alone the whole tale seemed to flow out of Kurt: the name calling, locker shoving, his biggest bully. Blaine could relate.
Sometimes he felt phantom pains in his right leg from Sadie Hawkins. At first, Kurt scoffed when Blaine began sympathizing. If he were Kurt, he might not believe himself.
Private schoolboy bullied? Blaine sure didn’t look like someone who lacked friends. It was fairly common knowledge that Dalton had a zero tolerance policy for harassment. So, he explained. As brief as he could about his own experience with public school bullies.
Kurt and he seemed to have more in common than a love for music.
He doesn't have any plans to see Kurt again though Blaine has plenty of ideas on how they could get together. Coffee at the Lima Bean. Old musicals were playing at the revival theater. Maybe another high school was putting on a play this weekend. All Blaine needed was a good enough message to ask Kurt out. He drafted plenty but none sent.
After school, Blaine knew Kurt might need an extra push. He was pretty sure classes at McKinley were done for the day.
He sent a single word. Less second-guessing that way.
Courage.
Then, he walked to the library to start writing an essay on Lord of the Flies for English.
However, he found himself unable to concentrate. Usually after a performance, Blaine had the song stuck in his head for at least a day or two afterward. In addition to humming in the weeks of rehearsals, of course. Instead, Blaine found himself thinking about Start Me Up by the Rolling Stones and oddly Livin’ On a Prayer. Both songs he thought better suited his father or Cooper’s tastes. It was a mashup of the two songs like his soulmate was hearing them simultaneously.
When he started thinking about his soulmate, there was a clear picture of someone. It didn’t take long for Blaine to bring up those blue eyes and the soft complexion of Kurt Hummel. Which was crazy thinking. He had no idea if Kurt was his soulmate.
Soulmates tended to be around the same age but just because Kurt was also in high school meant nothing. By that logic anyone at Dalton could be his soulmate too.
During his brief time with Kurt this week, Blaine heard no music from his mouth. In fact, Blaine had done all the singing. Even with half his brain saying he was nuts to think Kurt was his forever, Blaine couldn’t let the thought go.
Blaine’s text comes in in the midst of the girls’ performance. A wonderful mashup and excellent costumes. Tina had texted Kurt about the leather jacket idea early this week. He was very proud of how they managed to pull the looks together in such a short time. It was impressive.
Altogether, Kurt was feeling great. The boys had their rehearsal, apparently their performance was turning into an apology. Kurt wasn’t sure what they had done to Coach Beiste but apparently, she was quitting. He and Blaine were texting periodically now. No one knew it but Kurt was surely developing a huge crush on the Warbler boy.
Then, he confronted Karofsky. He didn’t want to feel the same regret Blaine did—no one messes with the Hummels.
It seemed like mere hours but in reality, it was days, Kurt was enrolled at Dalton and saying goodbye to the New Directions.
He was full on having a Vanessa leaving Troy moment here. Kurt Hummel has got to go his own way.
God was he nervous to start at a new school. In the middle of the school year too. Being the new kid was going to be hard but not as difficult as staying at McKinley would be.
When Kurt was greeted by Blaine’s smile outside the office on his first day, it made Kurt relax. At least he already had a friend here.
It isn’t until they’re walking down the hall together—Blaine insisted on escorting Kurt to his first class—that Kurt noticed Blaine was humming.
“Is that High School Musical?” Kurt asked.
“Oh, um, technically it’s the sequel.”
“What about us…” Blaine sang, “what about everything we’ve been through?”
“What about trust…you know I’ve never wanted to hurt you?”
Blaine chucked. “Cheesy but true. Such a good movie.”
“We should watch it sometime,” Kurt suggested.
Instantly, he wanted to take it back. He’s been told he can come on too strong. Especially around cute boys.
“I’d love too!” Blaine said. “I have it on DVD.”
Kurt doesn’t see Blaine again until their one shared class of the day right before lunch. He sits across the room from Blaine during history but next to him at the Warbler’s lunch table.
Most of the group has the same lunch so Kurt is introduced to them before his audition later this afternoon.
“Nervous?” Wes asked, “you shouldn’t be.”
“Yeah, from what Blaine's told us you're a great singer,” Trent added.
“He’s barely heard me sing,” Kurt replied, poking Blaine’s arm.
He only sang one line of a song to the other boy today.
“Well…” Blaine rubs his neck abashedly. “I might’ve watched some New Directions videos on YouTube.”
“Oh, I forgot Rachel uploaded those.” Kurt tunes to the other Warblers then, “I hope I don’t disappoint.”
After lunch, Blaine walks Kurt to class again. “Between you and me, you’re a shoo-in.”
“Really?” The Warblers were such an esteemed group. Not at all like the disorganized New Directions. They had also been a glee club for far longer.
“Really.”
***
Blaine has had High School Musical songs in his head all day. Whoever his soulmate is, at least he’s got good taste in Disney Channel original movies. Then as the Warblers were preparing for Kurt’s audition, the song switched. An Evita song.
His soulmate sure did love musicals. Blaine was rather happy about that. He could already picture them sitting on the couch cuddled under a fluffy blanket with any number of classic musicals laid out before them. Arguing over if it was too soon to rewatch Moulin Rouge and whose turn it was to make popcorn.
They’d be in a big city apartment. Somewhere where no one cared if they were gay. All anyone wanted to know was how they discovered they were soulmates. Their origin story.
From that point, the daydream grew fuzzy. Blaine couldn’t come up with that meet-cute story. It hadn’t happened yet and nothing his brain could come up with would ever match up with his future reality.
He shook his head, bringing himself back to the choir room.
The room was buzzing with excitement. It wasn’t every day the Warblers auditioned someone mid-semester. Of course, Kurt had special circumstances but the group was notorious for never breaking tradition.
Blaine tried to focus but it was difficult without Kurt at his side. Lately, he had been distracted whenever Kurt wasn’t around. All Blaine could hear, despite the loud room, was the song in his head.
I had to let it happen
I had to change
Then, Kurt walked in and music started to play. For a split second, Blaine thought he was imagining the words from “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” coming from Kurt’s lips. Surely he hadn’t chosen the same song as Blaine’s soulmate had in their head. He knew it couldn’t be his imagination when Trent leaned over and whispered to Blaine how much he loved this song.
Like lightning striking a tree, Blaine had a realization. Kurt Hummel was his soulmate.
Oh god, what was he going to do?
His skin was burning as if it was burned away like bark. He drooped in his seat desperate for water to put himself out with. To put a stop to the tingling sensation bubbling up under his skin.
All he wanted to do was reach out and touch Kurt. Some part of his brain was able to override that thought. He couldn’t ruin this audition for him. There was plenty of time to spend with Kurt after this, Blaine had all the time in the world to talk with his soulmate.
Soulmate.
Never did he think he would find his soulmate this soon. Gosh, they were only teenagers. They had so much life to live together. This was rare, special, to find your soulmate so quickly in life. Blaine would cherish it, he’d be thankful for this gift for rest of his days.
But how in the hell was he going to tell Kurt? It had to be romantic. Blaine always thought it would be when he finally came face to face with his soulmate, his one true love. There was so much work to be done and so little time to do it. Now that Blaine knew, he didn’t want to spend another day without Kurt knowing too.
He used to dream about running dramatically in slow motion towards each other and embracing just as it started to rain, which of course led to a fabulous first kiss in the sudden storm. But Blaine knew how unlikely that would be.
He’d just have to build a new fantasy, which he thought would be easy to do if Kurt was his so-called Prince Charming. Whatever happened was going to outweigh everything his imagination had come up with thus far.
First and foremost, he’d had to sit through a discussion of this audition, which he was barely able to pay attention to. All he wanted to do was walk up to Kurt, cup his face, and kiss him. After Kurt was finished, the council dismissed him. Blaine knew he’d find Kurt just outside the choir room because they had plans afterward but now he had no idea how he was going to sit through coffee with Kurt and not tell him.
“He’s very good,” Trent said, nudging Blaine.
He nodded in agreement. It seems most of the group concurred, Kurt was a good fit for them.
Kurt Hummel was the perfect fit for Blaine too. Even if he didn’t know it yet.
***
Kurt didn’t consider himself to be a good reader of social cues especially when his own emotions were involved. See, Finn Hudson and Sam Evans. Crushes on straight boys never ended well. With Blaine, he swore things would be different.
They were friends, classmates, and hopefully, soon they’d be fellow Warblers. Kurt was not going to mess this up. Even if Blaine was really cute and friendly and super kind and understanding. There was so much to love about Blaine, Kurt found it hard to find something he didn’t like.
He had found focusing on his dislikes of a person kept his feelings at bay. Like how messy Finn could be really shut down any romance fantasy Kurt had drawn up. Except, Blaine didn’t dye his hair like Sam, he was completely organized (Kurt had seen his dorm room; spotless), he was modest and genuine.
It made sense that everyone at Dalton wanted some of his attention. Blaine embodied Kurt’s idea of a gentleman and then some.
After his audition, Kurt sat outside the choir room waiting for his results. The council would discuss with the full group, release them, and regroup tomorrow with a vote. Kurt was waiting for Blaine to be dismissed because Blaine had promised to buy him a cup of coffee.
Some of the Warblers who were leaving had some pretty nice things to say about Kurt’s performance. Just general praise which soothes some of his initial nerves. Mostly, he just wanted Blaine to walk out with a big smile on his face. That boy couldn’t keep a secret. Kurt would know if he was in or not just by looking at his face.
Kurt was joined on his bench by a boy who introduced himself as Duncan.
“I was super nervous after my audition. I just got in at the beginning of this year so I know what you’re going through.”
Kurt felt his shoulders drop in relief. As much as Blaine tried to assure him the audition would be perfect, Kurt felt like he couldn’t relate much as the star of the glee club. Back at McKinley, Kurt rarely had center stage. Here, Blaine always had everyone’s attention.
“That’s actually great to hear,” Kurt said, with a slight chuckle.
“Seriously, Kurt, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. I’m a little concerned they’ll kick me out just to have your voice,” Duncan teased.
They keep talking about what it’s like to be a new Warbler since Duncan is positive Kurt will be getting good news shortly. He offers up some pointers to get on the council’s good side.
“I loved your song choice by the way, so weird because Evita had been in my head all day.”
It feels like someone’s dropped an ice cube down his back. He sits up quickly.
Oh, Kurt thought, is this it?
“You did?” He must’ve heard wrong. There’s just no way.
“Yeah, I love that musical,” Duncan confirmed.
Could it be this easy? He wondered.
“We should hang out again soon,” Duncan told him, “I’d love to get to know you. Newbie Warblers gotta stick together.”
Kurt gives Duncan his number before the other boy wanders off. Before Kurt can get too deep into any fantasies of his soulmate, wondering if that soulmate has just left him or not, Blaine comes out from the choir room.
“Hey you,” Blaine greeted with a big smile.
“Are you allowed to give me any inclination?”
He shook his head but was still smiling wide which made Kurt feel like good news was in his near future like Duncan had said. Kurt was telling Blaine how long he had practiced the song over the weekend with Rachel and Duncan reassurances when Blaine blurted, “Duncan Samuels?”
“Yeah, we just met.”
Should he tell Blaine about them being soulmates or wait until he was sure?
But Blaine just nodded. Something was clearly bothering his friend. For now, Kurt was going to let it go because he was sure Blaine would come to him if he wanted to talk. He didn’t want to force it out of Blaine.
Kurt couldn’t even get Finn to talk to him during their warm milk chats at night. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to pull the information out of Blaine if he tried.
“Anyway,” Kurt said, continuing his previous line of thought, “Rachel has this whole stage setup in her dads’ basement.”
“I don’t find that hard to believe based on everything you’ve told me about her.”
After that comment, their coffee date is back on track, Kurt doesn’t bring up his potential soulmate meeting.
***
Duncan Samuels was his lifelong nemesis. As far as Blaine was considered his life began when he figured out Kurt was his soulmate and if Duncan was going to interfere with that they were now enemies. Since their coffee date yesterday, Blaine hasn’t heard a word about Duncan but he also had yet to see Kurt today. They only had one class together after lunch, which Blaine was on his way to now.
Kurt saved him a seat and delivered the news.
“Duncan and I are going for coffee today.”
Those words were devastating.
In normal circumstances, Blaine would’ve asked Kurt why he wasn’t going to rehearsal but of course Kurt wasn’t a Warbler…yet. Blaine knew the Warblers were going to announce Kurt’s membership at the end of day, which meant this was the last rehearsal Kurt wouldn’t attend.
So instead of a calmly said, normal statement, Blaine spent the next minute freaking out.
Duncan was the worst! He was going to steal Kurt away from him before Blaine ever got the chance. Well okay, the rational side of him thought, Kurt isn’t being stolen he’s going willingly.
“That’s nice,” he finally said.
There was no way for Blaine to stop Kurt and honestly no reason to try since Duncan posed no threat to Kurt. He didn’t need a protector. Blaine knew they were soulmates and he’d find a way to tell Kurt later on. At the end of it all, Kurt was his soulmate. He just knew it.
“Are you free when I get out of rehearsal?”
“For you?” Kurt asked, “of course, I’ll probably still be in the cafe.”
“I’ll come find you,” Blaine told him.
Still, all throughout Warbler rehearsal, Blaine’s attention was elsewhere. He needed to get out of here and meet up with Kurt. Wes knew it too because he pulled him aside at one point while David ushered the guys into a new arrangement.
“What’s up with you?” He asked, “I need you focused for competition.”
“I will be,” he vowed.
“You didn’t answer my question.”
Blaine looked back at the other boys but they were already harmonizing.
“It’s Kurt.”
Wes smiled. “Don’t worry about him. He’s in, I can’t believe we have a countertenor on our team now. We’re going to wipe the floor at regionals.”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, Wesley. McKinley already knows what a talent Kurt is, he won’t be a surprise to them,” Blaine reminded him.
“Ah, but they didn’t utilize his talent,” Wes said, “it’ll shock them to see Kurt in the spotlight.”
Wes patted Blaine’s back and guided him back to the group to finish up rehearsal.
Blaine couldn’t help but check his phone again before he tuned back into rehearsal. He knew Kurt was getting coffee and that’s why he wasn’t answering his phone.
One of the best things about Kurt was when you were with him everything else was put aside. Blaine was sure if things got really serious, Kurt would shut his phone off entirely to prove a point. Right now, it was annoying as hell. Blaine needed to see a reassuring text that Kurt wasn’t running off into the sunset with Duncan Samuels.
What if his phone was turned off because the two of them were standing at the altar? Everyone turns their phones off in church.
He really really needed to talk to him. Blaine didn’t want to be the type of soulmate that holds onto that information too long. It’s like he’s lying to himself not being with Kurt.
Once rehearsal was finally over, Blaine rushed over to the on-campus cafe where he knew Kurt would be. He had to be there.
When Blaine pushed his way through the door, he saw Kurt was sitting alone nursing what looked to be a cup of tea. When Blaine approached him he could tell it was Chamomile.
“Can I sit?”
Kurt nodded but didn’t say a word as Blaine hung his bag across the back of the chair and removed his blazer.
He expected a question about the Warblers, perhaps an inquiry about his status to become one but nothing came. Kurt wasn’t even drinking his tea.
“What’s wrong? Did Duncan say something to upset you?”
“I’m fine, Blaine,” Kurt said, “Duncan didn’t do anything wrong. It’s me as usual.”
Blaine didn’t understand.
“Am I that unlovable?”
“What?”
Kurt was the most kind, sincere person he knew and Blaine had only met him a few weeks ago. He was most certainly lovable considering Blaine fell for him in just under 3 weeks
“I can’t really blame him,” Kurt continued, “it’s not his fault we aren’t soulmates.”
“You thought he was your soulmate?”
Maybe telling Kurt wouldn’t be too difficult after all.
“It’s just he made this comment yesterday that made me think…but of course I got too ahead of myself again and really I should know by now,” Kurt mumbled the last bit, “nothing ever goes to plan.”
“You can say that again.”
This cafe wasn’t a romantic candlelit dinner. He didn’t have rose petals to scatter around. There was no champagne to toast. But he had the most important thing.
Blaine reached across the table to grab Kurt’s hand. “Think of a song.”
“Why?”
“Just do it,” Blaine said.
Kurt’s face was scrunched up in a “I’m confused but I’ll trust you” kind of way.
As soon as the song hit him, Blaine opened his mouth to sing, “this could be the start of something new…it feels so right to be here with you.”
“How did you—?”
Blaine smiled at him. “Pick another song.”
“Your cares and troubles are gone. They'll be no more from now on.”
His mouth opens slightly.
“Your turn,” Blaine said, “ I want you to sing what comes to mind.”
Wasn’t the best way to prove they were soulmates to test each other?
Blaine wanted Kurt to have his own moment of realization even if he engineered it. He didn’t want their “how-did-you-know” story to be him informing Kurt about their connection. Instead, he wanted to tell people about listening to Kurt’s Warbler audition and thinking how odd it was to know the song he was going to sing before it began. Kurt’s story would start with a laugh because he imagined someone other than Blaine as his soulmate the very same day.
And wasn’t that just so silly of him?
Rather than have Kurt just sing to him, Blaine harmonized with him. This was the proof. He’d sing everything Kurt could come up with and vice versa.
“But baby, can't you see there's nothing else for me to do? I'm hopelessly devoted to you.”
“Blaine,” Kurt said. “We’re….”
He nodded.
Before Blaine even realized it, Kurt was out of his seat leaning towards him, they’re kissing. Kurt’s fingers are curved around his chin and his other hand is tickling the curls at the back of his neck. The tiny wisps of hair that always escape the gel by the late afternoon.
Blaine would happily keep his curls loose if it meant Kurt would keep his hands in his hair always. Especially, if it meant they’d never stop kissing.
Eventually, Kurt has to pull away. They’re still close enough to feel each other’s breath.
“Soulmates,” Blaine whispered.
It had been quiet while they kissed like everything else in the world just stopped. All the sounds of Dalton came rushing back all at once. The students in the halls, coffee orders being called out, and the shuffling of chairs as people came and went.
“When did you know?” Kurt asked, sitting down again.
Blaine pulled his seat around so they were closer and Kurt immediately reached for his hand.
***
3 months later.
Blaine hadn’t been upset to lose to McKinley at Regionals. How could he have been when he got to sing with his soulmate in front of a crowd? Their duet was so in sync and the crowd could tell. He doesn’t think he ever received such a loud applause.
Blaine had wanted to just be in that moment forever—staring into Kurt’s eyes hearing the words in his head just before they were said aloud, gripping his hand before pushing him into the spotlight to soak up the audience’s love.
No, Blaine was happy about Regionals. The Warblers had worked hard on the set; their second place trophy sat on the right corner of the council’s table at meetings now. What Blaine was concerned about was Kurt’s leaving.
His dorm room was empty now, the last suitcase zipped up. Blaine was sitting on his boyfriend’s mattress taking in the last moment that Kurt was a Dalton student.
“I’ll miss you too, you know, a lot,” Kurt said from the doorway.
“I know,” Blaine replied, “it’s just sad.”
Kurt took a seat next to him on the bed.
“I’ll sing to you.”
Blaine smiled. “Promise?”
“Everyday.” Kurt kissed his cheek.
They were going to be okay.
Have you ever read the rivetra fic "in all of the lives we are" on fanfiction net? Because I did and parts of it are canon in my head. What I really want to ask is :can you too please bless us with a canonverse reincarnation fic?
I haven't read it but I bookmarked it to read later! Thank you for the rec, anon! I have a canonverse reincarnation fic that I scrapped when I first got back into writing. I plan on writing one in the future with a lot more depth, but I'll share this draft since I don't plan on going back to this fic in particular. Warning, meh writing ahead 😅
“And then my soul saw you and it kind of went, "Oh, there you are. I've been looking for you.”
— Iain Thomas, I Wrote This For You
Childhood; where threads begin, or were they there all along?
The world is a cruel place, is the mantra Levi murmured to himself over and over again.
Kenny left him when he was 10 and after giving the police the run around, he found himself in a group home for children with disturbed conduct, also known as, the leftovers in the system. The leftovers that even foster care didn’t want to look twice at because everyone in this shitty place was just as fucked up as the last kid.
Mom, why did you have to die and leave me with Uncle Kenny? Did you know he was a gang leader? Or maybe you knew being part of a gang was better than this hellhole.
He wasn’t stupid, he knew his mother was a whore, and if the feds ever found out he was living in a brothel they would’ve taken him in an instant. So maybe it was luck that he had the amount of time with her that he did.
He still remembered how she desperately tried to shield him from her work, locking him in the closet when he was small, and when he got bigger, hiding underneath the bed and saying very sternly Levi, my love, you can’t make a sound or else mommy is going to get in trouble. Remember to cover your ears, just like we practiced.
And then when she died, it didn’t come suddenly. It was coughing in the middle of the night, him begging her to please let him find a doctor and he didn’t care about the consequences, he just wanted them to be together, but his mother shook her head and insisted she would be fine.
She wasn’t, of course, and Kenny both saved and damned him. He learned how to fend for himself, beat men twice his size, and take their wallet while they were recovering from his blows. He learned how to use a knife threaten people, and while his size threw people off, he used that to his advantage.
Even though he didn’t have his knives here, he knew how to fight hand to hand, and he was itching to land a blow to the next kid who tried to steal his dinner. It was his third month into the group home, and he was on his “last warning” as the head said, and next stop was juvie. He didn’t care, his life was at the end of the line and he was only 11.
“Hey, dip shit. Gimme your cookie.” Levi glanced at the boy who suddenly appeared, some new comer who clearly didn’t know his reputation. The boy was older and bigger than him, he guessed around 13 or 14, but he didn’t care. He ignored him and took a stab at the stale meatloaf.
“Did you fucking hear me? I said give me the goddamn cookie.” Levi sighed at the idiocy of this place, he knew what it was like to starve and despite the shit he gave this place, he couldn’t complain about the three (shitty) meals they got a day and the roof over his head. The company was much to be desired and that’s what usually got him into trouble.
“Tch. Go bother someone else, I’m not interested,” he said cooly, and the boy’s face grew red. Levi balled his left fist under the table, ready to throw a punch the minute he got too close to him.
“You little fucker—“ The boy began, but before Levi could take a swing at him, his shirt collar was pulled back by a smirking brown haired boy.
“Hey, hey, Matty, you don’t want to pick on him. Didn’t you hear that he landed Sam in the hospital last month?” Immediately the boy called Matty paled and backed off instantly.
“This little guy did that? Respect, Sam was a piece of shit anyway,” he muttered the last sentence and waved Levi away.
Levi shrugged and returned to his dinner, not paying the newcomer any mind but the boy took it upon himself to sit across from him, grinning. “You’re welcome,” he said, biting into his apple. “The name’s Furlan. You’re Levi, right?”
“Didn’t ask for your help,” Levi quipped, looking up at the eerily jolly boy, narrowing his eyes. “Since you know my reputation, you might not want to stick around.”
Furlan laughed, and Levi a twinge of irritation as he continued talking instead of walking away like everyone else did. “I don’t think you’re that scary, Levi. From what I heard, you don’t start fights, right? I think the guys think you’re an easy target since you’re…Well, don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re really short. Even though everyone’s afraid of you, I think, if they’re like me, they’re really just impressed that someone around here isn’t afraid to fight the bullies.”
Levi didn’t say anything to that, he was just trying to survive into the next fucking day, and didn’t think of himself as some sort of savior. But, if Farlan believed in him, maybe he wasn’t so fucked up as he thought.
He sighed, giving the boy a once over as he knew the step he was about to take. To be vulnerable. To give a shit about someone else for the first time in forever.
“So, what brought you here?” He said, as if he said those words before, the words rolling naturally off of his tongue not from an 11 year old, but someone who’s carried the weight of a lifetime.
And just like that, the threads intertwined again.
ii. Adolescence; where threads cross over but never touch
“First day of senior year, Eld! I have a good feeling about this—we’re going to ace our SATs, get into the same college, and we’re going to see the world!” Petra exclaimed, swinging her backpack as they walked to school. Eld chuckled, and flicked Petra’s forehead.
“See the world, huh? With what money? I don’t remember you applying to jobs with me and Gunther over the summer, and now you’re broke.”
Petra huffed and took a playful swipe at Eld’s shoulder. “You know I was helping my dad with his business over the summer. Oruo can vouch for me, he stopped by a couple times to help us—for free, no less!” Petra smiled, thinking about the laborious, but fruitful summer that her family had thanks to everyone’s hard work. Her dad’s hardware business was small compared to the big box stores, but their customers appreciated the charm and personalized customer care that the Ral’s offered. “He’s really grown up, hasn’t he? In grade school he wouldn’t be caught doing something without recognition, and I don’t even know if he mentioned to you two that he was helping out Fridays and Saturdays.”
“Hmm, yeah I guess you could say that,” Eld mused, shaking his head internally at Petra’s obliviousness. She, along with him, were usually the perceptive ones in their little friend group, but he supposed being childhood friends blinded her to certain things, like Oluo’s long time crush on her. Sure, he flirted with her, but he flirted with everyone, and it wasn’t until their sophomore year of high school that he started wanting to seriously date only Petra, but she took his advances as one of a matured best friend and less as a guy in love with his best friend. Eld wondered how involved he should get, maybe doing Oluo a favor and dropping a few hints to Petra that Oluo was a great guy despite his arrogance, and he has come along way since their freshman year.
But, the blond knew that Petra’s feelings for Oluo would remain as best friends, and after her most recent breakup with some guy who seemed like a short stint for junior prom and as a member of the girl’s soccer team, she couldn’t very well go alone…well, it wasn’t a surprise they parted ways shortly after prom.
She confided in Eld that she wanted to start college fresh and with new opportunities, and she would be damned if she let a guy decide her future. It wasn’t like she was going to turn down a date from a cute guy, but she wanted to be very clear that it wouldn’t be more than a few casual dates. Besides, she said to Eld and Gunther, one hazy summer evening when they were eating ice cream at the county fair, who needs a significant other when they all had each other? They then raucously toasted with their popsicles in the air to their future, wherever it took them, and love be damned!
