i think one relevant thought in regards to criticisms of Aang's character arc and how I don't think most of the discourse comes from a place of actually understanding his character, is that lot of it seems to revolve around the idea that people think that the only valid kind of character arc is about change? Like they think characters HAVE to let go, or that growth necessarily means losing something; a big part about Aang's character is that his beliefs matter but most characters either don't understand them or dont care about them (implicitly mirroring Ozai's own 'WHO CARES, THEY LOST' mentality), so his struggle is in keeping true to his beliefs and ways in a time actively hostile to them, I think?

No that’s 100% true. His big fight the entire time is proving the value of his cultural beliefs in a world which doesn’t understand them but needs them. It’s why I mention in my tags that Aang’s arc was never about being fundamentally changed. He didn’t need an ideological upheaval in order to grow because he wasn’t supposed to grow AWAY from the kindness and value of life that the monks instilled in him. He NEEDED it in order to still see the Fire Nation and Zuko, as worth saving too. (It was Zuko’s role in the narrative to have his ideology drastically changed and shifted!!)

Also the whole loss thing will never not bother me because it essentially implies losing his entire people and culture wasn’t enough. It wasn’t enough that he had to deal with the guilt of being the sole survivor of his people. Of having made a choice that took him away from them when they needed him. How is that not enough? It’s literally what haunts him through book 1. It’s what inspires his rash decisions to go along with plots to figure out the Avatar State too soon. It’s what drives him in book 3 post the failed invasion to decide he CAN’T keep dragging people down with him he HAS to do it alone.

His loss is so big. So incredibly big. I don’t understand how it’s not enough.

since I just posted some shots of them in ishgard and recently finished decorating alia’s apartment, I’ll share about their house! I’ve been headcanoning that the apartment is actually a very, very small coerthan house since I’ll never be able to afford the housing lottery that they decide to move into once they’re in a stable relationship for a while - at first, they do stay in an apartment, but it’s mostly sid and rielle while alia is on wol business and technically alia’s that she began to rent after ishgard’s rebuild. once things settle down and alia has more time to be home, though, they decide that they need something with slightly more room, and something that both of them put an equal effort into upkeep and both financially responsible. ishgard is their home, even as much pain as they’ve had behind its walls, and the highlands are close enough to the city proper for regular dark knight patrols while not a far distance from where rielle is training conjury in gridania, too.

You’re tempting me to make that video compilation… I’ve had this idea in my head to put together all these different lines Ryan’s characters say where his delivery is the gentlest — there’s that part in the Barbie movie when Ken says “Barbie, what if there’s beach? You need someone who’s a professional in that.” and after some more dialogue, he tosses aside his rollerblades and asks “Please?” and all of that… it’s all so soft.

Not necessarily the tone of his voice (though that IS soft but not on the same level as what most ppl would describe as Soft™️ like I wouldn’t say it’s as soft as, let’s say, Gene Wilder, where I feel the tone of voice is mostly affected by the throat, but here I’m talking specifically about the tongue placement). But… his fricatives.

You’re so used to people having harsh fricatives and really biting and grating at their t’s and k’s and p’s, but Ryan doesn’t — Ken doesn’t! Six doesn’t! Every single time I’ve heard one of Ryan’s characters say “please” it’s just… you barely hear the ‘p’, it’s much more breathy at the end. Like he’s really pushing it into one exhale when he says please. He does it again in La La Land as Sebastian, he says it three times please, please, please, each and every time the delivery just as cushioned as the last. The ‘s’ is softer than it should be bc the tip of his tongue is closer to his teeth than it ought to be (I am guilty of this too). I didn’t notice his slight lisp the first time I saw the movie but I definitely noticed once I started fixating on Ken as a character. And I’m so used to listening to Steve Blum’s Starscream’s very harsh, guttural and gritty drag of his vocals, like a knife scraping across pavement, like a fork in a garbage disposal — that listening to Ryan be the exact opposite of that is what I can only really describe as…… dreamy.

Don’t even get me started on Sierra Six from The Gray Man AHHHH there’s two scenes in particular that grab at my heart!!!! One where he’s getting in the car, having an argument with his ex-coworker/ex-partner(?) and when you’re upset you’re normally more likely to be spitting your words, your diction is a bit more careful without your awareness of it, your enunciation is a little crisper because you’re really heightened by your own emotions. But!!! Ryan!!! Doesn’t!! It’s the opposite!!!! Six huffs “I’m gonna bleed out while we have this conversation” and normally someone who’s upset will really enunciate that ‘c’ in conversation, but instead it’s the ‘n’ he’s “landing on” for lack of a better phrase (somebody else can really describe it better than I can)… he adds “can we please just unpack this somewhere else?” so there we are again with the softest please I’ve ever heard, and his s’s in “…this somewhere else” ugh it’s so pleasing to listen to...

And there’s another scene where he’s talking to the same woman, I think just a few minutes later, and I won’t spoil the conversation topic if you haven’t seen the movie, but his line delivery is just so!!! Cushioned!!! Cushioned those consonants!!!! And I feel like it’s all more so than usual in this scene specifically because he’s panting and grunting so much. His throat is tightening and every word is a struggle. Everything is almost breathless the way he says it, this is more to do with his throat and diaphragm instead of tongue placement like we’ve touched on earlier, it adds a whole other layer to how soft he speaks. But tongue placement specifically, his lisp is so prominent especially during the lines “that’s better” and “everyone else thought I should be in jail” and the way he says jail the “j” isn’t as sharp, he wavers at the very edge of that sentence you can fucking hear it, it’s either emotion or struggle for breath, whatever it is, it’s — I’m not fucking normal about it bro!!!! The sentence after, “And that’s the way it was until…” it’s all mumbled, it’s all just one big long sigh —

oh my god wait the mumbling. I need to fucking touch on the way Ken mumbles “because we’re girlfriend and boyfriend” and how rushed and quiet he says that line: “cuzwe’regirlfrenboyfren.” Trailed off. Almost as if he’s afraid to say it aloud because a part of him knows his love from Barbie isn’t the way a girlfriend with actual romantic feelings for her boyfriend is meant to show it. This doesn’t touch on his softness necessarily I just enjoy when he mumbles.

There’s a bunch of other examples in my head but I’ll spare you lmao thank you for enabling me 💙💙💙
