Shout-out to S13 E08 The scorpion and the frog for showing us dean's hell flashbacks for the first time since season 5, then not much later making a joke about dean being uncharacteristically afraid of his hand being mutilated in a trap.

but just imagine... cas remembers where asmodeus is. they need to confront him eventually, right?
i'm just thinking of what'll happen when they find out gabriel is back...
sam, ever the caring one, would try to take him in and help him recover even if dean doesnt want him to. like not even fuckin sabriel. thats what sam does, is help people.
i can just imagine. when they get back to the bunker, gabe either weak and hurting or justice-seeking and wrathful, sitting patiently on the map table while sam gingerly removes the stitches in his mouth and cleans his wounds, mumbling about how he "needs to rest" and that "you'll be safe here, i promise. if you really want, you can leave when you're stronger. but you're weak right now, gabriel, after being kept there for so long. we'll take care of you. me, dean, and cas, we'll keep you safe until you don't need it anymore." his voice trembling with emotion, not only care, but hope, as just the plain fact that the archangel is alive is proof that lucifer isn't unstoppable. gabriel, himself, is a beacon of defiance and strength, and they can take the devil down together.
sam would lead gabe to a spare room, a supporting arm around his shoulder and a weak smile on his face. after gabriel sits down on his new bed, sam would mumble a quick "be right back" and dart out of the room.
a moment later, he would be back, a spare shirt and some jeans in his arms, smiling down softly at the archangel. "those rags are filthy, gabe. i know you would appreciate some new clothes, just for now. i would say you should get washed up, but it's late and i doubt you'd be up to it... are you? might make you feel a little better."
gabriel looks up at sam for the first time, finally getting a good look at the hunter that he hadn't seen in so long. god, he had changed so much, he was so different... it's been so long.
"no, thank you, sam." just four words, four broken, cracked, raspy words, filled with emotion and pain and gratitude. gabriel had thought he would be stuck in that little cell forever, tortured, lonely, hopeless, but they had saved him. sam had saved him.
gabriel would never admit it, not wanting to remember it, or speak of it, but he had almost gotten used to life in that filthy little cell. condemned to suffer through his own living hell for eternity. and eternity's a long time for an archangel, trust me.
sam would set the clothes next to him, seeing the hurt in gabriel's eyes and placing a cautious hand on his forearm, making sure he doesn't flinch away. "okay. uh, i'll be in the next room if you need anything. don't be afraid to wake me up or anything. goodnight, gabriel."
he had never noticed it before, but sam said his name with such reverence, such hope, that it was like he was unworthy of speaking that one word, like he was going to taint it if he used it.
sam would get up to leave, but gabriel would grab his wrist with a weak, shaky hold, fingers trembling as he held the winchester back for just a moment more.
"sam, i'm," he would cough, covering his mouth with his sleeve, as his throat, scratchy from disuse, protested. "i'm sorry. i'm sorry for all those times i hurt you, back... back then. thank you."
"gabriel, it's okay. i forgave you years ago."
