It’s Star Wars Culture week! My family is Polish on my dad’s side (my last name makes it quite obvious lol) and I wanted to incorporate that into Star Wars! You don’t see much Slavic inspiration in Star Wars, let alone Polish inspiration.
I decided to take Pantorans and do a bit redesigning! I think Slavic culture fits them quite well, since they’re built for cold weather!

sw culture week day 1 - fashion
Folkloric dance is something so beautiful! There are many beautiful clothing all around the country, but I really wanted to portray the beauty of these dresses! This one is from Jalisco, and every state has it's own but I think more about these than the others to be honest. If you can, you should see these in action, it's beautiful beyond words!

These kind of dresses are made to be eye-catching, and are a little bit heavy, but that's to make the effect of them even more notorious. Ribbons across the hair is something that's very used here, and ofc it's also used in folkloric dance. As for the make up, is just a simple one to combine with the dresses, it's just to complement, not to steal the attention. Dancers are asked to smile at all moments, so this is kind of a straining activity!

sw culture week day 1 - fashion (ou Suu à la canadienne)
A late entry for day one of Culture Week! I’ve been having issues with my tablet, so I was only able to colour the sketch using my track pad :’)
For this prompt, I wanted to try my hand at redesigning Suu Lawquane’s outfit based off historical French Canadian fashion. I went with a simple peasants (or habitants) dress, which I thought fit best with Suu as a farmer.
Looking for sources was an interesting experience, as I quickly found myself overwhelmed by the variety of French Canadian and Regional French dresses and how little I knew about the traditions and histories surrounding them, leaving me with a desire to learn more and to further incorporate French dress into my art!

Starwars culture week day four: region and holiday
For this one I like to incorporate a Peruvian holiday that I think would fit in well with the mandolarians culture. And its a fighting festival event that happens in a remote village in the andes mountains.
It’s call Takanakuy which is Quechua for “ when the blood is boiling.” Or “ to hit each other.” ( depending of the source) it’s an all day festival which takes place earlier Christmas morning.
Tumblr media
3. It’s a day to get out the aggression and settle disputes ( although some are just there for a fight) fights usually begin with a hug before beating the heck out of each other.
Tumblr media
4. There is a referee that oversee the fights.
Tumblr media
And in recent years women also participating too.
Tumblr media
There’s also masks that people wear sometimes.

Star Wars Culture Week Day 2: Food
Tumblr media
(tap for better quality <3)
Ahsoka when she’s older (in a world where Order 66 doesn’t occur). She’s made baklava for Anakin, but they’re mostly for the clones. She’s probably set a separate plate aside for Rex, because we all know that man won’t take a break, and by the time he does, they’ll all be gone. Ahsoka’s taken all her jewellery off because making food can get messy.
It was likely Master Ti that gave Ahsoka the recipe, though the holonet has quite a few variations. I imagine she was wanting to find more ways to reconnect with her culture, and what better way than to make food?
It's very, very popular amongst her people. Served at weddings or in your own home, baklava can be found everywhere.

Star Wars Culture Week Day 4: Religion & Holidays
My sona, XueYing, invited Remedy over to help them put up some Fai Chun ( 揮春)  for the Lunar New Year 🧧
They live very far from their home world so it’s nice to bring a little of it to Coruscant.
@starwarscultureweek
(more cultural info below)
I wonder how Lunar New Year would work. Would more than one planet/culture celebrate it? At different times? With so many planets and so many moons, which lunar cycle are we looking at KJHajkhk. But I think it would be interesting! Maybe there are some years where many lunar cycles end up syncing and that’s when the new year is celebrated (so it is not celebrated every year, which makes it even more special). I am thinking and pondering.
I used the fai chun at home for reference. We had so many pretty ones, I couldn’t even choose all my favorites to draw.
The one of the door says “ 出入平安 “ ( chū rù píng ān ) which mean “come and go in peace/safety”. It’s a common phrase to say to people leaving the house. I drew the God of Wealth and Fortune (财神) on it. The firecracker one says “大家恭喜” (Dà jiā gōng xǐ) which means “congratulations (on the new year), everyone”
We also hang a mandarin and green garlic stalk over the door. Mandarins/Oranges/Tangerines are symbols of good fortune/gold. The Garlic stalks are used to ward off misfortune and evil spirits when you enter and leave the house.
Remedy is wearing house slippers because you’re not walking around an asian household without them 😂 Red is also a good color to wear for the holidays.
This was really fun!! I enjoyed going through all the fai chun we had, and sharing my Chinese culture with my favorite blorbo 🥰

sw culture week day 2 - food
Loving mexican snacks tbh! These two are just eating some elotes and gordita rellena after a long day, so yeah that's it. These are two of my favorite snacks, so I couldn't miss the opportunity to draw them!
They're both using jarocho clothes, which are typical from Veracruz. Someone on the last post suggested I should draw those next so if you're seeing this, this one is for you!

Hays Minor clothing
For @starwarscultureweek 2022: Day 1: Fashion
In the comic Age of Resistance - Rose Tico (2019), we meet young Paige and Rose, their parents Hue and Thanya and get a glimpse into life on Hays Minor, a planet described as having almost no atmosphere, too cold to support native wildlife and so far from its sun that its people lived in perpetual twilight.
Paige is the narrator of the comic and she describes Hays Minor as “a mining planet, known more for its ore than its people”. So it makes sense that the clothes we see the Tico family wear are pretty simple and practical. They reminded me of áo bà ba, a traditional southern Vietnamese garment — “typically a long-sleeved, button-down silk shirt with a scooped neck paired with silk pants. The shirt is long and split at the waist sides, forming two flaps customarily with two pockets.” (Wikipedia)
It’s a versatile garment traditionally worn by working people in Vietnam’s countryside. So it’s perfect for Hays Minor’s mining community too. The shirt and pants are typically made with solid colour fabrics and don’t have to be the same colour. Modern áo bà ba designs now include patterns and embroidery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For indoors, we see the Ticos wear more colours and more lightweight clothing. For the cold outdoors, they wear longer, thicker clothing and more earth tones. The shape of the tunics Thanya, Paige and Rose are wearing in these panels below look a lot like the shape of the áo dài, the Vietnamese national garment, especially the split and wearing the tunic over pants.
Tumblr media
The neckline, bodice and waistline of Thanya’s two-tone tunic is especially interesting to me as a Malaysian. The V slit in the neckline and the shape of the bodice remind me of some styles of Baju Kurung. And the drape of the waistline combined with the skirt in a different colour — making the tunic look like a two-piece — reminds me of some styles of Baju Kebaya.
Pictured here are Baju Kurung Kedah, Nyonya Kebaya and Kebaya Kurung.
Tumblr media
I headcanon that Hays Minor folk have different sets of these clothes for everyday wear, for work, for home and for special occasions, like New Year and weddings.
Hays Minor is dark, icy cold, has almost no atmosphere and has no native wildlife. In the Cobalt Squadron book, we learn that all food had to be grown under artificial light. So I imagine there are very few resources to make clothes from scratch. I imagine their clothes or at least the textiles to make clothes would have to come from other planets in the Otomok system closer to the sun.
And since Hays Minor has no native people, everyone on Hays Minor are diaspora! I imagine most Hays Minor folk come from other planets in the Otomok system, but there are some folk from other nearby systems in the Outer Rim too. And maybe from even further, considering Haysian ore seems to be a highly sought after conductor. (The book mentions Haysian jewellery too.) And all this adds to the diversity of textiles and clothing on Hays Minor.
Feel free to add your thoughts to this post! Let’s talk Southeast Asian culture in space!
Age of Resistance - Rose Tico (2019) was written by Tom Taylor, with art by Ramon Rosanas and colour by Guru-eFX.
