#talk to me about Jason Grace

I am begging for us to talk about Jasper/Jiper. Please. Please
If you've only read HoO, you don't understand them. You don't. Jason and Piper had an amicable breakup that both recognized was NECESSARY after both came to the separate conclusion that their entire relationship was forced proximity and compulsory because of their respective mother/mother-figure, and THATS. are you KIDDING ME?? I love them.
Jason and Piper stayed close friends, and while it was awkward and they had to piece back together who they were as a pair, they stayed a pair. They didn't leave each other behind.
If you haven't read TBM yet, allow me to show you the scene Piper finds out he dies:
She spends a good portion of time holding his bleeding, drowned corpse, trying to list to Apollo all the ways they could bring him back. Physician's cure, Cherokee plant cures, the Doors of Death, etc. Apollo tells her, "Jason Grace struck me as many things, but he wasn't a cheater. Would he want you to rend the heavens and the earth and the underworld to bring him back?" Her eyes flashed angrily. "You don't care because you're a god. You'll go back to Olympus after you free the Oracles, so what does it matter? You're using us to get what you want, like all the other gods." "Hey," Meg said, gently but firmly. "That won't help." Piper pressed a hand on Jason's chest. "What did he die for, Apollo? A pair of shoes?" ... "They're here." I scooped them up, my hands trembling. "At least- at least we have them." Piper let out a broken sob. She stroked Jason's hair. "Yeah, yeah, that's great. You can go see your Oracle now. The Oracle that got him KILLED!" ... As we made out way up the rickety stairs, I wasn't sure which felt heavier: my exhausted body, or the cannonball of grief and guilt that had settled in my chest. All the way to the house, I heard Piper's sobs echoing off the dark cliffs.
(pg. 310-313)
Like, yeah they weren't romantic partners but these two were in love. They were a duo against the world. They were best friends, even if they were going through a rough patch.
You all don't understand. Jason REFUSED to let Piper go on the quest, because he knew that whichever of them went with Apollo, would die. And he couldn't let her die. The thought of living without her made her sick, of ridding the world of her? He couldn't bare it, even though, throughout this book, he iterates he knows it will break her for him to die. It's a selfish sacrifice, because he can't live without his best friend. Because REMINDER, HE STILL THINKS LEO IS DEAD.
im emotionally unwell over Jasper. End of story. They're perfect. they're besties. Jason deserved better. Hope he's vibing down in Elysium and I hope one day he, Piper, and Leo, get the happy days they deserve together FUCK

i feel like the only reason that leo and annabeth aren't Best Friends is because jason and percy are doing everything within their powers to make sure that doesn't happen, for everyone else's safety and sanity. piper on the other hand... piper dares them to make stupid and dangerous inventions and watches the chaos unfold

jason who has no emotional connection to his traumas and will talk about his experiences so easily and casually like he's talking about making a sandwich for lunch vs leo who has so much emotional connection to his traumas trying to get him to talk about it is like trying to pry open a locked steel door with a plastic fork

Does anyone have fun headcanons for some random events that happened at Camp Jupiter during the time of the Titan war? Because we know next to nothing about the Romans but I refuse to believe they didn't have any crazy weird events and quests.
Like, if the Seven were to talk about the time before HoO (or generally any Romans and Greeks) and Percy and Annabeth would go like "Oh and we went through the sea of monsters and ended up on Circe's Island that one time" or "and that's how Percy showed up to his own funeral", sure, that would be a crazy story. But Jason also defeated a Titan on his own and Reyna only ever went to CJ After Percy and Annabeth were at Circe's island, what was the crazy stuff that happened in between?
Also what did the Romans think Caused the Titan War since they obviously couldn't have known it was Luke?

I think any criticism you can apply to Jason being a boring main character could just as easily be applied to anyone else in the Seven because the entire Heroes of Olympus series lacks a strong definitive narrative voice in general

Rick riordan just wanted to write a classic, straight, Superman hero character and put him through some one dimensional development
And the rest of us said no actually that’s a feral gay man and you know what fuck you he’s black now too
And that’s why he skewered him

roman prequels where the 4 main roman characters were all there for at least a few years together. jason and reyna are the main characters dealing with the impending titan wars, their own rises to power and relationship as co-leaders, and their tragic pasts. hazel and frank are the secondary leads who despite having equally compelling plotlines exist solely to provide comedic B plots. like so:
plot A: jason fights sirens who tempt him with the truth that he never wanted power and wants more than anything to escape.
plot B: hazel gets stuck in a tunnel and has to get frank to dig her out before she misses evening role call.
plot A: reyna negotiates an uneasy political truce with the amazons, complicated by not knowing that her sister was now the leader.
plot B: frank's grandma turns up and keeps EMBARASSING him in the dining hall by yelling about his destiny or whatever.
plot A: dramatic heart-wrenching flashbacks to jason's abandonment
plot B: flashback where hazel's death is scored to looney tunes sound effects
the two plotlines usually intersect in some convoluted way. the sitcom continuity button resets at the end of each installment - reyna and jason never lose their positions no matter how badly they mess up, frank and hazel never come off probation even if they do something right. if either pair fights or admits to romantic feelings, it gets resolved at the installment's end with no change in the status quo of the relationship. the biggest developments come from the story's tone - what starts as one tale of heroism and another tale of comedy dovetail into an increasingly dark and absurd overarching plotline about the futility of "new rome"

I am 100% open to all headcanons, I love bisexual!Piper and bisexual! Jason, but gay! Jason and lesbian! Piper scratch an itch for me that can’t quite be explained.

jason's roman vs greek identity crisis in the books is comparable to troy bolton in which it was really about being bisexual all along

i think there is a fundamental misunderstanding people make when approaching Jason’s character, but to explain it I must first go on a tangent -
One of the things that’s really interesting with the demigod characters is that, while they are independent personality-wise of their divine ancestors, and their personality is never fully reflective of their divine ancestors, demigods still always have personality traits that are strongly related to an aspect of their divine ancestor(s). For a lot of demigod character this is even the same trait that presents itself in different ways, particularly in CHB. Demeter kids tend to be rooted - usually presenting as them being stubborn and resistant to change or opposing opinions. Apollo kids tend to be self-focused. Hades kids tend to be driven by their relationships/bonds to others. Percy and Tyson are the only Poseidon kids, but Percy’s seems to be that outwardly he appears to be an unpredictable wildcard, when this is not necessarily true. The sea is not wholly unpredictable - if you learn it, you will learn the patterns that drive it, and that it is subject to many outside influences (the moon, the sun, winds, etc). It just looks unpredictable to those who do not bother to learn (which, btw, is a GREAT metaphor for ADHD imo).
Jason and Thalia represent two specific spheres for Zeus/Jupiter (and in Jason’s case, Hera/Juno as well). Thalia is Zeus as King of the gods. She is a natural leader. She works well in leadership positions and tends to lead logically. This is why she’s the lead Huntress of Artemis.
Jason does not represent Jove and Juno as King and Queen of the gods. Jason represents Juno and Jove as mother and father of the gods. This is why he tends to fall naturally into leadership positions in groups but simultaneously struggles in them in some scenarios but not others. He dislikes leading an army and being seen as perfect and above others because he is not acting from the perspective of a king, he is acting from the perspective of a member of a family unit. He is not the leader of an army, he is a wolf in a pack. He leads emotionally. He’s protective of his group. Yes, he is a bit of a dad-friend! But at the same time he is adverse to putting himself above the group! Yes, he falls into leadership positions, but only to a certain degree. He works best in a group he’s familiar with. He works better in smaller groups.
To Thalia those specifics don’t matter, because she’s not working from a more personal perspective like Jason does. Thalia could lead groups Jason is normally put in charge of, but Jason would not be able to lead Thalia’s groups. But also Thalia is not devoid of Zeus-as-a-father-god traits either! That was basically her entire dynamic with Annabeth (and Luke)! And Jason isn’t wholly devoid of Jupiter-and-Juno-as-rulers-of-the-gods either, he is capable of tapping into that- and he does so! But he is always primarily Jove-and-Juno-as-parents-of-the-gods first and foremost.
And that’s a really interesting character trait to play with! It’s so cool picking apart characters and seeing how they embody traits and aspects of their divine ancestors! And you can lean into that in so many things! If you’re writing meta/character analysis, if you’re writing a specific character for a fic or something, if you’re making a demigod OC - heck, I use this sort of analysis of what traits are common for demigods of specific divine ancestors for assigning cabins/etc to characters (and people, if I am requested to do so).

jason but he's more god than man.
he's become the priest of the gods, he's brought respect to their names once more, he's brought their children to safety.
he's spent more days among them than apart.
because he's not just the son of jupiter, he's descended from more of the others than he can count. he's the champion of the queen of the gods. he's favoured by his brothers, by his sisters, by the goddesses who've taken him as their child, by the deities he's worked so hard to help. he's the priest of the greek and roman pantheons.
and he was already less human than the others.
and he might not have been human to begin with.
he covers his cuts quickly so no one can see that he bleeds the wrong colour.
no nobody knows he bleeds more gold than red.

Percy could kill with a snap of his fingers but won't because he doesn't understand or practice his own powers enough to realize he can do that.
Jason could kill with a snap of his fingers but won't because when he was young he preferred to feel the kill beneath his own hands, clenched tight between his teeth and as he grew he was told to only use his powers when absolutely necessary, otherwise hide them away and fight with only sword and shield.
Hazel could kill with a snap of her fingers but won't because she doesn't know how.
Thalia could kill with a snap of her fingers but won't because she is as unfamiliar with her powers as Percy, not because she doesn't understand them, but because she values the hunt and the chase and so sets them aside in favour of teamwork with her fellow hunters.
Nico could kill with a snap of his fingers and he will, when he needs to. He's kind, and patient, willing to fight until the bitter end in hopes that they'll cave, they'll desire life and give themselves up. But not everyone, not every creature, deserves to live and standing between him and his goals, ugly at the core of their soul, sometimes he'll decide they've lived long enough and snap his fingers, shattering their body into bits and pieces so violently their soul flings out and severs itself in the process.

Jason is a well—built tall, blue-eyed blond man with a scar.
Luke is a well—built tall, blue-eyed blond man with a scar.
Percy...
HELL YEAH!!!
This is also why I find it sad there’s rarely any Jercy fanfic with reference to Luke, whereas it’s pretty common for Luke to be used as a plot device (aka: a bad ex) in… any other fanfics? I even headcanon Luke as Percy’s ex-hero-crush, so with the fact that Percy-Jason are some sort of rivals throughout HOO, there could have been so much interesting interactions you know?
I mean. The potential is there. The reference is there. The parallel is there. But it seems like I’m the only one who’s obsessed with a High School AU of a love triangle/ square/ polygon like what——

unpopular opinion?? maybe?
Matt & Ivy have a really interesting dynamic!! both pre- and post-canon!! with or without romantic undertones!! either reciprocal or one-sided!!
and obviously it has to be handled with a particular level of care/respect BUT I think if we allowed them enough grace there is space to explore a really interesting possibility for that relationship.
#obviously Matt is not ENTITLED to Ivy - im absolutely not saying that at all#and he definitely did a lot of things extremely wrong and Ivy doesn’t HAVE to forgive him - she doesn't even have to *like* him#and in many stagings she actually doesn’t at all! even pre-canon she isn't into him on a *platonic* level - which i love for her#but I also think that - misguided & clumsy about it though he was - Matt is genuinely trying his best to see her as a person.#an idealized version of a person yes. but a person nonetheless.#which is what Ivy wants from Jason (and tbf he sees her as a person also but it’s an obviously different situation)#and while you can't force romantic compatibility (that was like. the whole point.) in some versions of the show they're not-quite-dating#- in varying types of “situationship” with varying levels of commitment. so it's not insane to me to say hey#maybe they need time to stabilize themselves and figure out who they are again after the events of the show. but maybe a couple years -#- down the line they reconnect and they're both in a better place & maybe this time it can all work out.#idk I think I just see a lot of people write it off entirely - and they’re well within their rights to do so don’t get me wrong#but I don’t think it’s fair necessarily to put them in the ‘doomed to fail’ category#wow okay I care about them as a pair more than I realised#tldr; give Matt & Ivy and their relationship dynamic the grace + complexity they deserve#mouse talks bapo#bare a pop opera#Ivy Robinson#Matt Lloyd#[as a side note - sometimes I think about queer Matt & transmasc Ivy & the interesting concept of their potential boyfriendism]
