I have this HC that Yosuke overheats easily based on nothing but 2 fanfics and the fact that japanese tree frogs apparently can swim in rivers in -30 degrees celcius but are at great risk of dehydration if exposed to 30+ temperatures. I know 30 degrees celcius are probably considered extremely hot, but where I live its pretty much always from 25 upwards so...

Not me searching up frog traits to give Yosuke because Jiraya is a frog. Nope. Not me.

I have no basis for agreeing with you but I 100% agree with you as well (and maybe I'm biased as someone who grew up in 30C environments and absolutely loathe the heat)

But it does kind of match up to him in canon? He handles the cold pretty well and is a proficient snowboarder, but when he's hot he gets a little bit (just a little) whiny and tired

jaina solo is mary sue

What an interesting assertion to leave in my inbox! Especially because without context it’s not entirely clear whether that’s meant to be a question (do I think Jaina Solo is a Mary Sue?) or a challenge (e.g. “Jaina Solo is a Mary Sue, prove me wrong”).

And, assuming we conclude this statement is true, is that supposed to be a bad thing? If Jaina is a Mary Sue, am I not allowed to like her as a character? Or is she supposed to be my guilty pleasure or something if I do like her? (I don’t really have guilty pleasures, anyway, I prefer just to have pleasures.) I do have lots of thoughts, so thank you in advance, dear Anon, for the ask and the opportunity to share them.

At this point I will freely admit that I have not read a ton of Jaina Solo stuff in Legends. A lot of Wookieepedia articles and fics in which she appears, yes, a lot of the actual books in which she appears, no. I do have a version of the character that I put into my Sequel Trilogy fix-it fic series, but she has some significant differences from her Legends canon counterpart (a couple big ones being that her turned-to-the-Dark-Side brother isn’t her twin, and she’s the younger sister by quite a lot).

However, being around the fandom one does glean some general opinions, so I’ll take a shot at talking about “Jaina Solo is a Mary Sue.” Buckle up, I’m going to be very wordy here.

I really recommend the @thisweekinfandomhistory podcast episode they did on the concept of “the Mary Sue” — it’s a great rundown of where the concept came from, how it evolved over time, how it has affected fanfiction writing as well as mainstream characters in books, TV, and film, and some of the not-so-subtle ways it’s been used to police how we write or how we enjoy femme-presenting characters. The general concept of the Mary Sue is of a (almost always female) character who is sort of a blatant self-insert, where they have all kinds of amazing skills or powers, and are so attractive that everyone is in love with them or wants to be their friend, and they’re friends with all the main characters, and the story sort of starts being about how awesome they are, they saved the day and everyone clapped. The idea is that writing a Mary Sue into your story makes your story terrible and boring and they’re just a flat character who sucks. I think.

So — Jaina Solo. In Legends canon she is:

Strongly connected to main characters we know and love (eldest child and only daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa and niece of Luke Skywalker)

Extremely strong in the Force and a Jedi with the crazy Skywalker-brand Force lineage

An incredible pilot and very mechanically savvy as well (also probably helped out by the whole extremely-Force-sensitive thing as well as having at least two incredible pilots in the family)

Able to speak Shryiiwook (makes sense given that Chewie is her father’s best friend, has a life debt to her father, and is pretty much part of the family)

Very attractive (some combo of her mother’s and her father’s good looks, probably more so Leia’s)

Everyone is in love with her (there is an ongoing war among various love interests, including Jagged Fel, Zekk, and Kyp Durron, plus Ta’Chume once tried to marry her off to Isolder when his wife (also the mother of Jaina’s close friend Tenel Ka) was still alive and very much still married to him)

Super-special because of her twin bond with Jacen and being the Sword of the Jedi and having the Vong think she was their trickster goddess

Okay, so there could be some ingredients here that point to Mary Sue for Jaina, particularly the “she’s extremely skilled and the best at all these things” and “everyone is fighting over her affections” business. I would argue the fight of Jaina’s love interests is less about Jaina and more about the fact that in the era many of those books were written, apparently the only way they knew to give women conflict was to a) have them fight with other women (this is a problem they gave Leia a lot too) or b) have them worry about which man they should choose. Or the typical back and forth among authors who had competing love interests and wanted theirs to win. (Side note: Jaina and Tenel Ka should have gotten together at least for a while. Or Jaina should have pulled a Kelly Taylor from 90210 and said “I choose me.”)

Here’s the thing about Jaina having mad skills at multiple things, though. As you can see from most of the bullets above, her skills aren’t just out of the blue so someone could make an overpowered self-insert character. There are solid reasons for those skills. And why do we hear so much about her adventures and her skills? Well, the book series in which adolescent/adult Jaina appears are called Young Jedi Knights and The New Jedi Order. If she’s one of the titular Young Jedi Knights, or a member of the New Jedi Order, she’s one of the beings the book is about! And honestly, however you feel about those series, you’re gonna have a bad time if the whole New Jedi Order series is about Jedi who have no skills and always lose and suck.

Hey, you know who else has a lot of skills and is an excellent pilot and does crazy bonkers things with the Force and often comes and saves the day and has lots of love interests in Legends? Luke Skywalker. Is Luke a Mary Sue? (Well, he’s a man. Being a Mary Sue is apparently reserved for women. So I guess not.)

I don’t think Jaina is a Mary Sue, but let’s say she is and go back to my earlier point: so what?

Women are not exactly featured in the Star Wars universe. My girl Leia is a main character, but there are more women dancing for a Hutt in Return of the Jedi than actually have speaking lines in the original trilogy. (The minuscule number of humans of color in the Star Wars universe is a whole other issue, so blatant that SNL once did a skit about it featuring Lando.)

Maybe we get to have a female character who is beautiful and smart, crazy powerful in the Force, a kickass Jedi, an ace pilot with more kills at nineteen than several of the Rogues put together, who brings all the boys to the yard. (And probably plenty of beings of other genders, let’s be real.) Who is Han Solo and Leia Organa’s beloved daughter, Luke Skywalker’s beloved niece, Chewbacca’s beloved family, Jacen and Anakin’s beloved sister, Mara Jade’s beloved niece and Jedi apprentice, friend to many. Who struggles with her identity and her purpose, who grieves, who grapples with the Dark Side, who worries about winning peace for the galaxy but ending up alone in her life. Maybe I want to read about and write her adventures — which could, yes, include which being she ends up with romantically. Maybe I put a little of myself in there, or a lot of myself, or what I’d want to be if I had even half the talents she has and lived in the Star Wars universe.

Maybe we get to have a kickass Organa-Solo daughter with a purple lightsaber, as a treat. And maybe we get to have as many treats as we want.

TL;DR: “jaina solo is a mary sue” 1. No, she isn’t. 2. Maybe she is, and maybe that’s okay. Great, even.

- i’d like to think they might consider that but realistically and honestly.. i think they’re more worried about what that may entail because powers would be inherited and anything could happen once one of their children’s powers awaken. for now, i think they’re okay with their found family (each other, emma, and other possible allies). maybe a pet or 2 in the future as well

15. what is the most embarrassing thing they have done in front of each other?

- jordan: part of me wants to think jordan may not really get drunk when they’re in their masc form but i’d imagine they’re very carefree around marie and like to stay in their fem form more often (especially if they’re hanging with marie and emma at the same time).

let’s just say one day they end up drinking in their fem form, they never blackout but they do get drunk because they didn’t bother shifting. they act super clingy and needy, something they never do especially in their fem form, and marie relishes in their cuteness. goofy consensual pictures are taken and kisses are exchanged and the next day a very embarrassed and flushed jordan is subjected to marie’s loving but relentless teasing. the pictures are now her new phone wallpapers

- marie: she’s an emotional person but also tries hiding her feelings as much as possible. she’s cried in front of jordan plenty and been pretty vulnerable but she rarely ever vocalizes needing or wanting their help (not that she’d ever lack it). they’re both used to doing rather than saying when they’re together. they’re touchy and close and protective but she’s craving their touch and lips and.. well you get it- more than usual. she doesn’t know how to say it without cringing at the thought and getting nervous so she tries to be more subtle.

these days her hands hold onto theirs for longer than usual, she looks at them a little more longingly, and sometimes she puts on music that expresses what she needs or wants from them. this time she plays “cologne” by beabadoobee and jordan quickly catches on. she’s embarrassed as hell but they both go from laughing to kissing and soon.. something much more intimate

16. who is the most insecure and what makes them feel better?

- jordan is the most insecure because of their experience from past relationships/flings. they’re unsure if marie accepts them in both forms and still questions it despite it being clear she loves them and accepts everything about them.

marie’s insecurities are more related to her ptsd but she already knows jordan thinks super highly of her and always tells her how fucking badass her powers are. she feels safe with them and never feels like she’s dangerous or disgusting.

since jordan struggles with insecurity more and marie can often tell just from sensing how their heart is beating, she now makes an effort to tell them how much she loves them.. and or wants them in any form they shift to but especially in their fem form 😌 (words of affirmation to the rescue hehe) 💘

ARE YOU INSANE? Like only 5? Of all of them???????

Fuck.

Okay, but since you did not specify, these are not in any particular order 😜 Also this got LONG. I apologize. I went off.

The 4x01 hug because it definitely introduced us to the new era of Chenford. Up until then, they were mostly portrayed only as TO and rookie, and that scene challenged that status quo. Because Lucy needed a friend in that moment and Tim stepped up. And they almost crossed the line into something more, but they didn't. Because neither of them was ready, and it was the wrong time, and if they did at that point, it would have cheapened their relationship in the long-term. But the whole teetering on the edge of more was such a delicious scene. Not to mention that Lucy is probably one of the few people that can just ask Tim for a hug and he gives in without a word. I loved how open with him she was in that moment. She wasn't trying to hide her grief, she wasn't trying to be strong. She was sad and she wanted a hug, and deep down she knew he wouldn't refuse her.

This kinda brings me to the next scene which is sort of an inconspicuous one, but I will scream about it in the tags every single time. The way Tim acts in 2x12 is already just stuff made in heaven, but there's this one scene that always made me so feral... When he's telling her he heard they dodged some bullets, and she asks if he's keeping tabs on her, Tim doesn't really respond to that. Instead he reaches out by saying "Look, if you need anything, let me know." And this is prefaced by the fact that Lucy looks totally okay in that scene, she's actually kinda gloating/has a smug grin on. But already, so early into their tentative friendship, Tim sees her. And the most important thing in that moment is that Lucy doesn't say she's fine like she's been telling all the people around her, like Nolan, and even Harper. She doesn't put on the carefully created facade. In that moment, in the middle of the station, she decides to be vulnerable with Tim. You got a time machine? She's letting him know that she's not okay, that she's not fine, but that nothing can help right now, because he can't turn back time, and time is all she needs essentially to heal.

And Tim doesn't make a quip remark, or dismiss it. He says Wish I did. We know from the later scene that he felt largely responsible for what happened to Lucy, so this comment makes sense, but I also feel like even in this moment, if he could fix this for her, he would. He would carry her pain if he could. But he can't. He can only check in and later in the episode empower her to feel less like a victim, and more like the resourceful and badass cop she is.

The Nevins scene was my all time fave for a long time and it still remains in the top 5. It fully cements the notion that what happened to Lucy, they went through something together. It bonded them in a way they weren't expecting. Tim could've moved on, but he knew what Lucy needed in that point (which was briefly after DOD) was stability. He wanted to be there for her, he wanted to see her through to the other side. And of course he masked it by some ridiculous thing, and of course she saw right through him. I will also never get over how much this scene looks like a date. I WILL NEVER STOP SCREAMING ABOUT THE BODY LANGUAGE IN THE NEVINS SCENE.

I saw someone say that 4x09 is titled Breakdown because they're having one when watching this scene and like.... BIG SAME. And I know a lot of people say this is one of the few vulnerable moments for Tim, but I actually think this very nicely showcases how vulnerable Tim has allowed himself to be with Lucy since the beginning. They weren't even friends when he shared the Isabel story with her (some of it because of need, but most of it was because he needed someone to listen). Tim shares so much of himself with Lucy throughout their time riding together. That's why this scene makes sense. That's why it doesn't feel forced or surprising. It just feel them. Two things to point out in this scene, imo, are that Tim obviously cares deeply about what Lucy thinks of him and how she sees him. And she's not longer his rookie here, but he's her superior officer still, and yet her opinion matters. He doesn't want her to think he's anything like his dad. And how Lucy immediately recognizes that yes, obviously reassurance is in order (especially after her ooc comments in the previous episode) but that the man just needs a hug. They're always so great at anticipating each other's needs. Sort of like after DOD it was Tim who knew what Lucy needed, and it actually also reminds me of the s1 scene where Lucy comes out of Isabel's apartment and tells him it's pretty clean. Lucy knew what he needed then and does now, and that's why I don't get why she's apparently so oblivious to how much pain the UC situation is causing Tim, but that's another discussion lol.

The 2x11 scene will forever remain one of my favorite scenes in the series. In the WORLD. It was the scene that got me watching, I saw a gifset and then I went looking for the video and then the video sold me on the show. But I will literally never be over it. The music, or lack there of, Tim's desperation that we've seen building up the entire episode (the man literally broke his code to find her, he slammed someone's head against the steering wheel and threatened him with bodily harm). The rest of the crew standing around, feeling so helpless - you can see it on their faces that they've basically given up. But not Tim. Tim didn't give up. He didn't stop searching and he didn't stop pushing air into her lungs until she took a breath. Until she was sobbing in his arms. And even then, he was probably so glad to hear her sob, because that meant she was alive.

Lucy Chen is alive because Tim Bradford absolutely refused to give up. That man looked death in the face in that episode and said Not today. Not on my watch. (And then proceeded to spend the entire night in the hospital with her, his hands all bruised and beat up from digging her up, so Lucy would feel safe when she woke up.) WHY AM I STILL CHOKED UP ABOUT THIS AFTER ALL THIS TIME?????

HONORABLE MENTION: 3x14 scenes, because that episode was made from dreams and rainbows and I still can't get over it.

welcome back to my brainrot!!! the vamps - i'm pretty sure (very fucking sure) that i'm just gonna have to write multiple parts for that au!!!! not really part 1 and part 2 but just snippets from their life i think. ofc the first meeting between gojo and geto and reader but then i really wanna write about shoko and reader too, like how'd they meet etc. i can see like a rainy day with a shivering shoko heading to her favourite bar after a long work day. it's a pretty unpopular place; she has her own little spot in the window booth and the bartender already knows what she orders. a neon light hangs from above the bar but otherwise it's just some random low lamps that barely light up the place - it's perfect like that. the music isn't too loud either, it's mainly 80's music and stuff alike that. shoko thought it a bit lame at first but now, it's one of the reasons she keeps coming back. it's a perfect escape from the life she leads. on that rainy night, though.... the door swings open and a hooded figure struts to the bar, barely catching shoko's attention. she's busy watching the raindrops bash against the window, the cig slowly burning between her fingertips. the quiet clearing of a throat does pull her out of it - it's you. dark eyes and an even darker small smile, pointing to the seat opposite of her. "may i?" it's so sultry, catching shoko a bit off-guard. normally, she wouldn't let a stranger sit with her. why would she? but you? you're different. something about you is already making her hook onto you. digging around in your little bag, you pull out a cig of your own. but no lighter. you lean your elbows onto the table and toward the woman before you. "do you mind?" she knows what you mean; she's already clutching the tiny fire machine in her jacket pocket. the cig hangs from your mouth, a confident smirk pulling on the corners of your dark lips. her hand raises to it, she flicks the ligher and watches your lips fully curve around the thing. it takes light, the tip turns a bright orange for a second before dimming down; you inhale. deep. shoko's hand remains in its spot. and exhale. she gulps.

and reader and sugu, how their relationship began and overall how their life together is (talking about this with momo and i haven't stopped thinking about sugu owning a museum and all that). OKAY AS I WAS TYPING THIS U REBLOGGED IT so i know u've seen that too but yk i wanna elaborate on that more bc i loved that idea and since i'm talking about it already HE DOES PAINT. 1000000% THERE'S A MASSIVEEE MASSIVE ROOM FOR JUST HIM AND HIS ART. in the mansion and in the museum. the room has big windows and he looooves to paint just when the moon lights up the room.... it's perfect for painting u.

aaaaaand i mean geto and gojo duo is something that needs a deep fucking study too................. like ur slowdancing idea????? it lives in my head. i don't think it'll ever leave if i'm being honest. anyway i think gojo is almost as infatuated with geto as he is with u. c'mon???? he's fucking ethereal how could he not be??? i think he follows geto around at the house a lot. he wants to know what he does at all times, just wants to know more about him (he wants to hold his hand)(he wants to play with his hair). geto definitely finds it annoying at first i think i already said that but yeah. but fret not he does come off it after a while. what if gojo asks him to teach him how to paint????? so he watches gojo do it, but when he needs help he steps right behind him, chest touching gojo's back, hand grasping over his, guiding along the canvas. do u think gojo is paying any fucking attention at this point?????????? fuck no i'm sorry but that man is popping a boner. anyway. gojo accidentally teaches him some dirty jokes - geto swears he doesn't even listen to him but the stupid one-liners just keep coming out of his mouth (a sign that he's spending a lot of time with his little bf)(he's trying to ignore that fact).

as for our little prince and our little knight - the next part is imminent i promise!! i know i said that last weekend too but it's definitely dropping this weekend lmao. we learn a bit about shoko's (and the knight's) childhood and finally our favourite duo gets to bond over some childish laughter. but only just for a moment though....

ANYWAY neighbor!maki is very much inspired by a scene from the movie bound (1996). maki and the reader have seen each other a few times in the hallway of their apartment complex but they haven't spoken - until the reader goes to ask her for help. and then they both understand how attracted they are to each other. no smut not even suggestive they're just kind of flirting it's cute. i literally have so little of it but i still love the idea so muchhhh i need to finish it maki deserves it i love her

prince!gojo (autumn)

he has also learned that shoko had a friend, who was ready to do anything for her and for others for that's sake. with a deep sigh, she confessed that she regretted not taking in the other kid. shoko was more quiet, more well-behaved in a sense but the other kid - they kept getting into fights with the knights of the castle. "i kept scolding them over it. but no, they just kept going. later i learned that all of those beatings and slashings were for other kids." her head hanged low as she spoke. "they kept taking the blame for the younger kids, so that they wouldn't get hurt. stole food, so that they wouldn't starve. i didn't know."

the prince nodded along, surprised to hear about this noble kid. "where are they now?" he asked in a whisper, a little scared to hear the answer.

"they left. around the time they were twelve, i think. shoko was miserable. brought me and her flowers and bread; the most polite troubled kid i ever saw." she sighed."i was stupid."

"hi!

"hi." your neighbor takes a second to look at you.

"s-sorry, i don't mean to impose but could i ask for your help?"

"with what?" she asks with a raised brow.

"um, my sink fucking broke. a-and i saw you with a toolbox the other day and i t-thought maybe you could help me? if not, that's totally fine."

"do i make you nervous, maki?"

"no."

she goes to grab the bottle from your hand, fingers brushing over yours.

"thirsty, maybe?"

"curious, maybe."

Summary:

It's 20 years after the Battle of Liberty Island, and after the latest couple of almost apocalyptic crises and the odd near-death experience, deaths, and resurrections, Scott finally makes good on his promise regarding a holiday in the Maldives to his wife. Because it's Scott and holidays though, also known as opposite polarities, that planned beach hangout doesn't turn out as it was meant to, of course. The general global mood regarding mutants is once more not exactly shiny after Mystique just had the whole city of New York enslaved, emptied, and turned into a mutant paradise for a while. So when there's an unexpected tropical storm threatening the island group where Scott and Katja are residing and Katja reluctantly reveals herself to the rest of that beach resort in order to clear the sky with her powers and prevent damage and casualties in that little paradise, our heroes are faced with hostility instead of gratitude. Before the situation can get too ugly, our lovebirds are extracted with the Blackbird piloted by Remy and Marie, just having come back from a mission, who have been alerted by Jean telepathically that they need to make a little detour. Sensing how devastated their friends are by the spoiled holiday and the ongoing discrimination issues, Marie and Remy decide against flying back to Westchester but take the jet to Marie's former home state instead as she knows they'll not run into a lot of people there in the countryside. In a run-down country club with lots of karaoke fun, the two couples enjoy a surprisingly nice evening, coming to terms with the realization there are a lot of places even for mutants to enjoy the merits of normalcy and that it doesn't have to take luxury escapes and cocktails under palm trees for a little bit of true happiness.
