Book Review: That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf by Kimberly Lemming

Thank you to Orbit Books via NetGalley for a digital copy of the rerelease.

Fun, adorable, and self aware! Lemming has such a great blend of humor and romance, yet still having weight of modern politics addressed in her fantasy realm. I enjoyed how consent was addressed through this text and the complexity of it addressed through magic as a tool to provide commentary on such an important issue.

Brie and Felix had great chemistry, a bit of a grumpy/sunshine dynamic (she's the grump, he's the sunshine) and the friendships were quite sweet as well. Also, I wanted to eat so much while reading the fantastic food descriptions!

I wish more romantasy embraced humor the way Lemming did. I laughed our loud more than once reading this book. Reccomneded to those who love romance novels and love to laugh!

Y’all. You probably already know this just from the titles, but still, I will say it: these books are The Best.

They’re laugh-out-loud funny and endlessly readable and holy-whoa kinds of sexy and, just, such a damn delight. All of the FMCs are women of color, all of the MMCs are supernatural creatures of some ilk, and every single page of these oh-so spicy fantasy books is chock full of fun.

My new go-to piece of advice is to read these books tout suite – because there’s no point in denying yourself joy.

A 5 star read for me. It was funny, I loved Fallon and Cinnamon's dynamic. I liked the plot. The spice was good.

A 5 star read for me. Brie and Felix are adorable. Brie getting over her abandonment issues and starting to trust Felix. Alexis gets introduced and she's my absolute favorite. It was hilarious and again the spice was good and didn't overshadow the plot.

Mistlefoe:

A 5 star read for me. I adored this whole book. Alexis was a masterpiece. I was laughing a lot, it was amazing.

A Bump in Boohail:

A 4 star read for me. A short Halloween story that I adored. Felix falling over a child? Definitely my highlight.

Best Books Read in July 2023

A recap of the best books I read each month in 2023.

The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore

I read this to fulfill a requirement for class and it was so intense. Magical Realism is slowly growing on me and McLemore is an author who has really helped me appreciate the genre. This is a very loose retelling The Snow Queen but it is primarily about a girl coping with the aftermath of being sexually assaulted. Probably my favorite of their books I've read so far!

The River of Silver by SA Chakraborty

A collection of short stories related to The Daevabad Trilogy from a variety of perspectives over time. It was very enjoyable and a lighter than the original trilogy overall. Highly recommended to fans of the series!!

Honorable mention

That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon by Kimberly Lemming

Such a fun book!! Essentially, this is a romance, but the fantasy aspects are a lot of fun and I love the themes of consent that are very present. I love the sense of humor in Lemming's writing and look forward to more of her work in the future!
