The complicated historical context of Stan's mullet

I never did fully save/combine the collective 4 minutes on the history of mullets in my video, so let me tell you more here on tumblr.

Something interesting about mullets is that for the better part of the 80s, we didn't actually call them mullets in the United States. They were just A Hairstyle Men Had. I don't know how to express that mullets were so ubiquitous as a men's hairstyle that the term was largely unnecessary - it was The Look.

So where did "mullet" as a term come from?

Though the hairstyle itself dates back to ancient times, with the Iliad — written around 750-700 BC — including descriptions of warriors with “hair long at the back”, many credit the Beastie Boy’s 1994 titular tribute song ‘Mullet Head’ with being the first to actually use the term to refer to men with the hairstyle (complete with a description of the hairstyle: "Number one on the side and don't touch the back, number six on the top and don't cut it wack, Jack") though BEFORE then, the term mullethead was a term dating back to the 1800s that just meant a foolish person.

But some have pointed out an earlier usage, before 1994, which may have predated the Beastie Boys (though the jury is out on whether or not it was part of their songs' inspiration).

French fashion guru Henri Mollet was among the first to notably wear this style in the 20th century, in the 1970s (though David Bowie wore it around the same time, with a bigger societal impact). This led to Mollet's hairstyle being described in France as a "Mollet."

The thing is that, for the most part, while some in France called it a Mollet (pronounced like moe-lay, I believe), the term did not make it to the United States. It barely left France, but the term may have been anglicized to the surrounding areas as "mullet," where it existed in Europe to describe Mollet's signature hairstyle.

So if it was a European term and not even in the US, how would Stan have learned this term?

Well, according to his Stetson Pinesfield ID (the ID from "Not What He Seems" that greatly matches his appearance from his date with Carla McCorkle at the Juke Joint, but there's more on that in the video), he's been to London.

It is of note that there are very limited records of the term Mollet being used, so some historians disagree that this is a true origin of the term outside of a hyperlocal sense surrounding France, but it WOULD would make it within the realm of possibility for Stan to have heard the term before 1994, and use it in 1983 (and yes, it's 83, not 82, more on that in the vid).

Which means that Stan was WAY ahead of the curve and the only person on earth to think that mullets were not fashionable, and also that Ford had no idea what he was talking about.

Stan was like, "I have a mullet, Stanford!"

And Ford was like, "Oh? We're just making up made up things now? Cool, that's rad, I have a demon inside my brain, Stanley."

'False Hope'

"You know, I think about kissing you a lot." 

Ford was startled from his book at your sudden declaration and his eyes snapped to your face as he blinked, trying to process what exactly you said. He wasn't successful.

"Er, apologies, I must have misunderstood. What did you say?"

"I said, 'I think about kissing you'. Often." You repeated without preamble.

"... Is that a joke?" He asked in a doubtful tone.

"Not at all. Would you be opposed to it?"

Ford gulped, feeling his face grow hot under your gaze. You had some of the prettiest eyes he'd ever seen, and he was only fooling himself to say that he'd never thought about you that way.

Embarrassingly, he found his mouth dry as he tried to reply coherently.

"I uh, wouldn't, um… no."

You scooted a little closer to him, and Ford felt his heart pound in his ears at your sudden proximity. Your eyes drifted to his lips, and he heard himself swallow obnoxiously loud.

"...May I?" Your voice murmured softly.

He couldn't bring himself to speak again, so he nodded. His skin tingled as he felt your fingers caress the underside of his chin, drawing him close.

Your lips brushed against him in such a gentle motion, he found himself leaning a little closer. He couldn't have imagined how soft your lips really were, nor how sweet your breath would feel on his face.

The moment felt like it stretched into eternity, and yet, it ended all too soon as you pulled back, looking at him with a dreamy expression. 

"Was that ok?" 

"Very. Yes. I…" Ford wasn't sure where it came from, but suddenly, he was holding your face in his hands, kissing you again and eagerly pressing you for more.

Your voice hummed sensually and he shuddered as he felt your lips part before a soft, wet surface lightly stroked over his bottom lip.

It was an invitation, one he accepted with avarice as he opened his mouth.

The warmth of your mouth was an incredible experience, and he explored you eagerly. You indulged him as he tasted you, allowing his tongue to roam freely as he angled your face to the side. You were so warm, sweet, and the contrasting textures of your tongue and teeth were nothing short of addicting.

For a moment, Ford felt as if he was drowning in you, completely taken in like a fish caught on a hook, and his lungs burned as he reluctantly pulled back, breathing heavily while he looked into your hazy eyes. His cheeks were red and hot to the touch, his hands trembled against your face as he affectionately swept his thumbs over your cheekbones.

"I take it that you really liked that?"

Your lips pulled into a teasing smile and he gave a short, awkward laugh.

"Er, sorry, I uh, got carried away." He said sheepishly.

"I didn't mind at all, Ford. Thanks for letting me kiss you."

"Um… you're welcome?"  His voice was flustered and he shyly let you go as he looked away in embarrassment. You touched his shoulder and squeezed it affectionately.

"If you liked it, you're welcome to kiss me any time. I wouldn't mind."

"R-really? But… why?"

"Well… the thing is, I really like you-"

Ford's eyes snapped open and he gave a soft groan.

"Damn it." He growled. Another dream of you… this was unacceptable. He knew how unlikely and impossible it was that he would ever have such a relationship with you and besides that, he treasured his friendship with you too much to ruin it with such a selfish desire… and yet, that didn't stop him from dreaming of you like this; touching your face, kissing your mouth, holding your hands without fear of a negative reaction…. Like disgust. 

He almost preferred his nightmares of rejection because at least they reminded him of the reality of his situation instead of imbuing him with false hope.

As he lay in the dark, looking up at the ceiling, he gave a short, bitter laugh, covering his eyes with his hand.

"You're a damn fool." He muttered softly to himself.

My Version of Chronological Events in Gravity Falls

I didn't know what kind of rabbit hole I was getting myself into when I decided to write down the dates of the Gravity Falls timeline, focusing on the summer of 2012.

To make a long story short...it was abysmal! A lot of the dates chosen for J3 in the 2012 portion made little sense when taken account of the duration (in-universe time wise) of some of the episodes.

After a few headaches...and some stress-induced nausea...I decided to put my own spin on it. Besides, J3 is canonish, so I don't care if most of it ain't accurate. Please don't correct me.

I'm not including the events of Lost Legends in this, I was mostly focused on the show proper.

Inspired and based on TheoryOfWeirdness' take on the timeline. It was a fantastic read. They also gave me a new headcanon that I will follow.

The colored blocks are the episodes. Little Gift Shop of Horror won't be on it as it is non-canon.

I lost half of my day to this.

Now, I'm gonna move on.

A new ref for Lemmy, and an official design and introduction of Limmy in This Universe Has Lemons In It! Limmy was created by the Guardian of the Lemonverse (any pronouns) as an attempt to stop Lemmy from what they are doing, which is creating portals to travel through various universes and dimensions to have fun. Not only is that a risk for the balance of the universe, but GotL just dislikes this kid having fun and wants to see them stopped.

Not wanting to do it in it's own hands, it created Limmy, an angel dog meant to be an direct opposite to Lemmy. Limmy, however, doesn't do much to stop Lemmy, other than following them and bickering. Their relationship is very Tom and Jerry rivalry-esk.

(Names color coded for myself to read easier due to the similar names!)

Fun fact, Limmy was originally going to be based on limes (Lime Angel), but I kept that concept for GotL - and made them more angel-like instead.

while im posting, heres the entire (although very undetailed for storage limits) gravity falls timeline. shows ive included are: Gravity Falls, TOH, Amphibia, Phineas and Ferb, The Simpsons (yes thats canon), Family guy and the other shows within that multiverse (due to Simpson's Connection of course) Rick and Morty, and the MCU (cuz of the Phineas and Ferb connections) I have not included Solar Opposites because I forgot it existed, and havent included the Star Wars franchise cuz I am NOT watching star wars and reading all the comics for GRAVITY FALLS LORE of all things (star wars would canonically be involved due to Phineas and Ferb of course)

Musing on the Shermie Timeline Controversy in Gravity Falls

I love that Hirsh and the rest of the Gravity Falls staff being so bad at maths to realise depicting Shermie as an infant when Stan was being thrown out of the house as a teenager said some troubling things about the Pines Twins' existence so fans have had to argue thus:

1. Shermie AND Shermie's kid were teen parents

OR

2. The baby IS Shermie's kid (so one of the Pines' parents) and he can't take care of them for whatever reason (fans usually headcanon Vietnam)

(Another possibility is that Stan is stupidly inaccurate on describing the story but you think Ford would have impertinently corrected him lol)

Two issues with the "It's Shermie's baby" theory:

1. Principal says the Pines only have two sons-This wouldn't add up if Shermie was already in high school which the whole "fighting in Vietnam/infant son at home" would imply he's older than the Twins

2. So the Pines erased Stanley entirely from their lives-pretend he never existed.

Dipper and Mabel don't know he exists at all-they just have one great uncle hence why the Ford twist can even happen (and they didn't know about the car crash where Stan faked his death until Not What He Seems)

Ford keeping that charade up makes sense as it's heavily implied he barely interacted with his family after going to college and he was still angry at Stan-but Shermie?

Like Stan's parents suck but it feels a little weird that Shermie would never mention this to his own kid unless he actively despised his brother or is a terrible person (or maybe terrified of his parents who swore him to secrecy).

And like he wasn't involved in the scenario where Stan got kicked out and everyone outside of Stan's father seems to be on good terms with Stanley.

It's not entirely out of the realm of possibility but the timeline has a lot less wonk in it and it's a lot less adding stuff to the timeline (like Shermie hating Stan/Shermie being terrified of his parents or whatever headcanons you want to rationalise this i f Shermie never knew Stanley existed and he only had one brother who he barely spent time with.

So I'm leaning towards baby Shermie very young teen father and father of very young teen parent. Guess this family had more issues than a screw up like Stan

Yesterday's RP in the Roleplayed Timeline went BAD.

Recap under the cut for who's curious.

Sci (by @ask-yandere-sci) fainted after king Odyssey!Asriel (by @tecwizard) kissed him right in front of Wiz. Asriel took him to his castle, literally looking at Wiz like "he's mine now b@#ch" (textual words by Tec) as he walked away.

Wiz went looking for Sci, but instead met Asriel who wanted to fight him to win their beloved. But Wiz didn't accept at first, because he doesn't want to use Sci as a trophy or as a object. Asriel kept insisting with threats to make him fight, otherwise he would've taken his beloved without giving him any chance.

So Wiz decided to fight to save Sci from such monster. But... nobody knew that Asriel's HP was low. Not even him knew, so... Wiz killed him in one hit. Panic starts.

Later a skeleton who calls himself "Bill Cipher" appears, asking Wiz for a deal to bring Asriel back, leaving Wiz in debt until he needs a favor.

Wiz accepts. After all, he killed Sci's childhood friend, and he can't bear to hurt his best friend (and crush), so Asriel comes back to life.

Sci finds them, check both their souls and their stats to clear a doubt he had. He realizes that Asriel is actually a clone of the real Asriel, but that he has fallen in love with Sci and doesn't know that he's not the real one.

And ye Wiz tells Sci what he did, but he stayed calm so

BOY.

okay- we have titles for pretty much every section of the gravity falls period starting once ford gets to gravity falls

bonus- youve got paranoid ford and mullet stan and portal ford to get super specific

but were missing a few and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for names for the different periods (for reference, some of the period names weve got include weirdmaggedon, sea grunks, post-portal, and pre/post-betrayal)

were missing everything before ford gets to gravity falls. so theres nothing for the period of time hes in college with fiddleford, and theres no names for teenage stans before stan is kicked out and the period of time after hes kicked out until ford gets to college

we could use 'young stans' for them when theyre just lil kids

theres also nothing for stans perspective after ford gets portal'd
