uuuugh i keep procrastinating cuz i wanna make new refs n' arts n' all for us all but art slow so fuggit placeholder pinned abt the system better pinned with comm details, other accs, etc later :3 will reopen for commissions once arty verifies me! as a whole we're legally deaf and disabled! we can all draw but have diff styles/preferences :3 body is 30 (eugh i don't like admitting that) so am adult BUT we don't wanna be involved in nsfw art so pls respect that⭐ We can't get a formal diagnosis due to various real life issues, so we're not going to claim any particular diagnosis, but we can't exactly ignore the symptoms and stay masked forever. The random HC edition!

Happy Frankie Friday, everyone!

I am very sorry this next chapter is taking so long. You can blame the fucking holidays that played with my mental health like it was a Kendama. It may not look like it, considering the length of this silly post, but I'm actively working on it.

As I've stated before, I have way too many HC about this story. Here are some, completely random, no one will care about. Enjoy!

Frankie

If you really want to know my Frankie, you can read this near extensive love letter, which was originally closer to a 10k ramble. Here's a few extra details (there are many more stored up in my sick brain).

Frankie will tell you that his favourite book is not The Master and Margarita. Don't believe him. That's a lie. Instead, he'll argue that it's In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote, All Quiet On The Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque, a close second (which is a nod to myself about my next story). He also loves Gabriel Garcia Marquez. He used to read a lot more when he was in the Army, nowadays not so much, somehow.

His favourite movie genre is science-fiction, and his favourite movie of all time is Close Encounters of the Third Kind (can you guess why?) He also has a particular fondness for Solyaris, Sunshine and Monsters. And in a couple of years (PTMY is set in 2014-205) he will love Prospect (do I need to link that?). He also loves documentaries, especially the science ones.

His favourite bands are Jefferson Airplane (Grace Slick's voice does things to him) and, well, Fleetwood Mac, which is a sort of fandom consensus for P boys that they all like FM, right? His favourite song is Dusty Springfield's Windmills Of Your Mind, which he never told the boys because they would give him hell. It reminds him of his mother.

Izzy would like him to be more in touch, culturally speaking, with his Argentinian roots. But it's a very complicated topic for him. Argentinian cuisine is, however, by far his favourite (he loves good meat).

Frankie has a thorough, obsessive mind. When he gets into something, anything, he wants to know everything about it, understand how it works, break it down and rebuild it entirely, and he will spend months, sometimes years, fixated on the same book/movie/object/painting... woman.

Benny

Benny has never been much of a reader. But he's a music connoisseur with eclectic tastes. He's always looking to discover new music, and his favourite app is Radiooooo. Please don't talk to him about CDs, he will hurt you, vinyls are the only way to listen to music if it's not live. He has far too many favourite bands to list (and even I don't know most of them, they're too obscure).

His favourite movie genre is HORROR (capitalised because when he tells someone, it is always excitedly, and in a very loud voice) and his favourite movie is The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (close second: An American Werewolf in London). I have it down to his favourite scene, in case you're wondering just how crazy I am.

Don't let the golden retriever demeanour fool you, he's a very sharp, insightful movie watcher, he can break down any given scene for you and he has a passion for makeshift special effects.

He'll eat quite literally anything, especially if it has eggs or cheese in it (he's actually a very good cook, but you don't want to clean after him), but his favourite dish is his mother's mac & cheese, because he's cute like that.

Will

A word on my Will. He's a very refined, educated, sensitive man. A man of cold logic and rich inner world, complex thoughts and curated emotions. Will is an iceberg. We only see 10% of him. There is this original wound in his childhood only Ben knows about (it's a family thing), but one day in the near future he will tell Reader. He's a dreamer, and a romantic, as well as a very practical man, which in his unique case is not mutually exclusive. He and Reader are very alike and insanely close, I cannot stress that enough.

He enrolled after 9/11 because he thought it was his duty and he sincerely believed he was going to make a difference. He crashed so hard when he realised what was what. Still, he soldiered on, pun intended, because he had committed himself to the job. He is, as he himself puts it, a warrior, but he would have made a damn fine architect or artist.

When Jean left him, she broke his heart. It didn't make him bitter, however, on the contrary, he developed more empathy (which might come in handy... 👀). He is the only one who acknowledges the traumas they all went through and sought treatment for it.

He's not too big on movies, but his favourite is Citizen Kane (which Reader ADORES. I have so many HC about her, because I suck at reader's insert and she's a complete OFC without a name and a writer with the courage to formally declare her such). He likes classic rock and Debussy and trusts his little brother to make him discover new sounds.

ETA: His favourite novel is Anna Karenina.

Seriously? I've never loved a man so much while being not remotely attracted to them.

Santi

I'll be honest here, Santi is a bit of a mystery to me, and I spend just as much time trying to decipher him as I spend imagining Frankie's or the Millers' childhood (don't worry, I will spare you. For now).

We know what kind of music he listens to. Music for motivation, if you ask me. It's less about the tune itself than setting the mood in which he needs to be.

I believe he likes food. Good food. He will not, unlike Benny, eat anything, very far from it. His job is his life. But he does like to travel for leisure. Also, total lack of imagination on my behalf, here, but he's from Guatemala.

He and Frankie met first, at the very beginning of their military careers, but Frankie became very close with Will and even more so with Benny when they met later on. Santi and Frankie have a deeply rooted yet looser bond. They can go for months without talking to each other, but will very naturally pick up where they left off. Benny is Frankie's best friend. For now, at least.

Tom

Name one person who cares. Not me.

Now ok, I hear you, you're screaming at your screen "did I just read a shittone of useless stuff I never asked for in the first place???" And please, mind you, I'm sparing you the HC on Izzy, Rosie and Yovanna. I'd just like you to know that Izzy's bi.

So to atone for that, I will tell you how the PTMY boys fuck.

Frankie

Frankie fucks with a vengeance. It's an outlet. A necessity.

However, nothing will happen until he's got his partner's explicit consent. Another consensus about Frankie, he is very respectful of women. It's in his nature, and Izzy did a very good job educating her little brother as a feminist.

His first kiss was Brionna (you better believe he got the girl he wanted. And she never regretted having him as her first kiss either) and his first time was with one of his sister's friends, Selena. He was a scrawny 15-year-old, however already very... charming, and... motivated. She was 19 and slightly condescending at first, like “ok, you cute, I'll take your virginity.” Let me tell you, she was in for quite a surprise. She certainly didn't expect him to make her come. This hard. Twice.

Like I said, obsessive and thorough... When he started being into girls, he downright studied the subject so he could master it and be the best. Not competitively, though. He's too selfless. He's a very tactile, sensory person. He needs to taste, inhale, touch. When he cares, his hands are on his partner, always.

Oh and Izzy got super pissed at him for fucking her friend.

Yes, his favorite meal is 🐱 and yes, he will make his partner come multiple times before he does anything else, but when he's done with that, he will turn them over and fuck into them at a punishing pace. That's why, in the darkest period of his life, he favoured intercourses with professionals. Who he also treats with the utmost respect. Over the years, 🐱 eating has become a quest. He's always and forever looking for your taste. And as he does, he'd rather not see his partner's face, so he can forget he most likely will never taste you again...

But it wasn't always like that. In college, he was literally drowning in 🐱, as word quickly got out of his prowess. And he was exceptionally soft on Pilar, the Mexican girl, the only woman he really ever had a relationship with, and boy, did he break her heart when he left. He had no intention of hurting her, and he tried his best to be gentle, but he felt like staying with her was being dishonest.

And of course, there's you.

Ok, one more for the road, because it makes me sweat.

Benny

Benny's quick (compared to the other ones) but deadly efficient. He's got stamina. He's playful. Sex with him is simple, and fun, and good. Very good. He will make his partner feel soooo good about themselves and their body. He's talkative (likes to let them know what's on the menu before he starts), and he'll be into whatever they're into. He. Is. Game. Toys? Alright! You wanna be tied up? Why not! You want him tied up? Let's go!

Oh and he's a tits man. And he likes ALL of them. Any shape any size any colour.

Will

Ah. Will. Will would rather be in love. But, you know. You can't always be. This said, no matter the circumstances, he will be entirely cued in to his partner, careful to please and to pleasure. Completely selfless as well. Also great stamina. Guess it runs in the family. But when he's in love? Phewwwww... When he's in love, his moves belong in a museum. It is ✨art✨

Santi

Santi is in for the performance. He's a showman. Which at times gets in the way of the result, despite him being a very good partner. Yovanna exposed him, on this one, though. Saw right through the bs and told him as much. And thus made him a much better lover...

I mean. Look at him strut... 🙄😏

Tom

Has a micropenis.

Monster/Cryptid TF2: Demoman

TRIGGER WARNING : GORE. No blood, but body horror.

His territory is littered with all kind of traps and land mines.

Stepping into it would mean certain death.

His territory is relatively small compared to spy's for exemple, but does have a few traps set in territories that aren't his.

Sometime his traps backfires. It happened semi regularly and each time he gets another piece of metal stuck in his body or loses another limb.

He shouldn't be alive. Engineer's theory is that whatever turned them into monster is keeping them somewhat alive.

His face resulted of a sticky trap that went horribly wrong, trying to get scout.

Though he doesn't have eyes he seems to be aware of what's around him somehow.

It may not seem like it but his vocal cords are mostly intact.

Mostly.

Due to his overall status (and him half walking on his shin), he can't really run.

That's why he always and only comes out at night. He doesn't have to worry much about getting headshot by sniper so he's pretty much the only one that dares to show up at night.

During the day he hides in a house in the middle of his zone.

This house is the most trapped of them all. Only him knows how to get in safely.

At night he goes to check the traps he set the day prior, and set new ones.

He has a torn up bag with metal, wires and everything he might need to set a trap.

Said bag is really noisy. All the metal parts bumping into each other.

That and all the metal pieces hi has on him (and in him) makes an ominous clanking sound that follows his everywhere.

He's not really worried about not making noise anyway.

He doesn't only rely on explosives.

He's incredibly quick and agile with his sword, which he always keeps with him as he also uses it to walk.

If you attack him he can't "run" away, and he knows it.

So his last resort is his sword.

You won't even be able to approche him.

Most of the time if he can't manage to hit you he'll make you back up into a trap.

And there we go: demo ! Only 3 more to go... more or less.

I can't wait to draw and post the others so I can start working on a small story. I have some ideas for like, the beginning but after that i'm not sure 🤔

Also can't wait to post them so that I can see what people will make with them ! ;)

I'm so happy with demo's design tho ! The front and side view of the face at the bottom looks so cool !

I also have to refin some of the last mercs, I have the idea but i'm lacking the details.

One of my first two MHA headcanons requests!

Tomura Shigaraki

Despite being raised to be a mighty villain, Tomura definitely has some other hidden quirks throughout his life

Yes, All-For-One did training with him when he was younger, but he couldn't give all of his attention to the kid 24-7. After all, he had Nomu's to make, quirks to steal and and lives to end

So as a way to distract him, Tomura was given a Gameboy Color, and while AFO didn't know what to buy him, Pokemon ended up being his first video game

Admittedly, even to this day he goes and plays games when he needs to relax. Pokemon is still one of his favorites and he plays every one that comes out, but he also loves horror games

His first horror game was on PC and he accidentally dusted it. While gaming was a great way of learning control, he went through a surprising number of electronics his first year

No one knows this because Tomura feels like he'd rather die then reveal it...but he's actually an amazing artist

He started coming up with his own concept art, making monsters he'd want in his game. The designs were really good, but he was worried that AFO would be disappointed if he knew

He even drew what he thought his hero outfit would be, but dusted it out of self loathing and anger

Tomura actually has a soft spot for kids

Due to his past trauma, sometimes he'll see himself in the children he passes- he also sometimes finds it easier to relate to kids, who look at him without fear or worry

On the same note though...

One way that Kurogiri will sometimes calm Tomura down is by showing him funny videos of kids getting pushed over or falling down

Did he have a childhood dog? Yes. Is he scared of dogs? Also yes.

Has a weakness for pudding. He’s almost killed Toga and Dabi before for eating his pudding

The first time Twice said that the League of Villains were his friends, no one knew but Tomura actually shed a tear. It was the first time anyone had said he was their friend

He took Twice’s death way harder then most people thought he would

Once when Toga cried, to shut her up he went and scooped her an ice cream cone- when he did, Toga gave him a hug and he felt it the rest of the day

Sometimes watches romance movies in secret and wonders if something like that will ever be possible for him

Is actually secretly friends on discord with Denki, who he plays The Isle and DBD with, but Denki has no idea its him and the two actually have a lot of fun

Hi hi!! Thank you so much for the ask!! Ooooh this is gonna be so fun!! Let me do one for each of my mains!!

Charlie really likes musical theater and has introduced me to many of them!! Whenever we're just hanging out we usually end up humming whichever song is stuck in our heads, as well as just randomly blurting out little references from the musicals!!

Sir Pentious jokes that his hat gets jealous of all the love he gets, so he usually bends down so I can give it a little kiss every now and then! Other than that, he also says that his hat wants to do something romantic or affectionate when he's too shy to ask for it himself!

Simon can end up snorting if he laughs for too long, and something that never fails to make him laugh is getting to hear the little "clink" of our glasses bumping together when we kiss, so whenever I notice that he's upset I ask for a kiss so it'll make him laugh and snort!!

JD likes the fact that we're the "weird kids" of our school, he enjoys knowing that I understand his point of view on most things and he's even started to buy either two slushies or a little treat for me before he comes to school, that way we can both enjoy it!

Jacob really enjoys cooking and baking, every time I'm struggling to deal with textures or just having a hard time eating in general, he makes me one of my favorite dishes. He has the recipes for all of them written down and memorized, and he always stocks up on the ingredients for them just in case!

Nause really enjoys reading my posts! Whenever we don't know what to do to pass the time, he offers to read my writing aloud to me, but he usually skips over posts or stories that involve other characters that he's jealous of!

Muichiro really enjoys having his hair braided or played with! Whenever he's stressed or restless he just lays his head on my lap and asks me to play with his hair until he calms down or feels better. It usually ends with him holding on to one of my hands and drifting off to sleep on my lap!

Shaun likes to come up with random "smash or pass" questions whenever he's bored. He'll think of horror movies we've watched together and question if I'd smash or pass on the slasher or monster. Sometimes we both agree on the answer, other times it turns into long, heated but playful arguments about why the other's answer is absolutely wrong!

Zuko really enjoys physical affection, especially if he gets pampered because of it. Sometimes it's hard for him to come up with the proper words to express how he feels so he just prefers to give me a nice warm hug and lean into my embrace instead! Having me hold him while we lay down, head on my chest, while I play with his hair and kiss the top of his head is his absolute favorite!

Yoonbum loves wearing my clothes! Since I'm chubby and he's very thin, my shirts look like dresses on him, which are absolutely comfortable and warm, he only ever takes them off if we want to go out. He says that having my smell on him makes him feel safe and loved!

Hunter loves watching documentaries and movies about wolves, they're his favorite animals! We ended up developing the habit of cheering whenever the wolf in the documentary is successful during a hunt or courting a mate and so on! When a movie mischaracterizes wolves or something about their behavior, Hunter grumbles about it the whole time!

Things I recommend if you're schizospec

Take a few break days from caffeine every week . Fruit juice or decaf are good alternatives if you do it for the taste

Sometimes there will times or days maybe when. you are so tired & probably too tired to do anything . Sleeping is optimal for the organism in this case . If it happens too often do see a doctor but . for me personally after any big event I need time to sleep for a day to recover . The horrors etc

Paranoia is so hard so bad to talk to anyone . It is okay if you cannot maintain yourself at the same level but do try to keep relationships intact . It is truly horrifying but having at least a few people is very good [I cannot talk to most people more than once every now & then without panic attack but I have my one guy & even though I'm still scared he'll kill me I am significantly less scared about him]

Pill organizer . Pill organizer slays

Semi related to the paranoia thing but it is also good to try to maintain any healthy relationship you can. I like to think of them as 'business casual' relationships in which they're my coworkers. We aren't really close & we don't really feel much about each other but we brighten up the office for each other

Sometimes it feels so awesome to indulge into delusion. Ie. connecting the dots about how everyone can read your mind . Generally thinking about it more / purposefully triggering it is actually quite bad even though it is thrilling

In a similar vein don't let anyone else encourage stuff like that. There are relatively harmless delusions that don't really matter [par example I believe I am a monster & also dead & also an automaton et cetera & I'm at an okay enough dose of meds that they don't really scare or affect me. They're sort of comforting & my therapist says they're okay to let live so long as they don't get too severe] & those aren't so bad but. any of the bad ones are bad to be encouraged!

I don't know if it's my schizoaffective or autism & quite frankly I don't care but . Having routine charts or plans that can be looked at or said aloud calm me down. Structure makes me feel safe . I can control that

If you're not diagnosed psychotic & you take ADHD meds that is bad. Those are stimulants & they make psychosis worse

Also, any drug or alcohol will make psychosis worse! Not a slay!

Comfort object such as stuffed animal or blanket is always really nice. In my psychoses every object is sentient or has a personality or whatever it is so I go for the nice ones to keep with me. My blanket is very understanding & Pink Monster instantly attached to me / vice versa

Most people will be open about thinking you're delusional or crazy or whatever 'negative' term they assign psychotic people. They'll be horrifically offput ! As much as it sucks my best advice is to find people who understand / are cool about things . Nobody will be perfect in this regard but it'll be better

Auditory hallucinations suck butt! Personally listening to music or otherwise audio input all the time helps me a lot

If someone is telling you to drink chemicals kill someone become god et cetera they are probably not entirely real. They could be a real person but they're likely at least partially psychosis. If they are a real person leave them immediately

Similarly, if something completely implausible happens [ie. aliens contacting you, cartoon character living in your backyard] this is also probably not real. I know it can be very very hard to tell but if you're in good enough mind sometimes it is useful

The weather/the words you saw/the song you heard/et cetera are not telling you how your life will go. Even if it really really seems like they are I really promise they're not. I still think they are but there is no way in hell some 2000s song telling me that I have to become god is true. This goes with my implausible thing, for despite believing it I know it is not true

If you are religious bring that up in therapy. Religious delusions are so common & therapy can help them to not spawn

Your cognition will probably worsen as a result of your disorder! Just try to do what you can [mental games, children's books, et cetera] to keep it at whatever level you can. If everything is still hard & bad that is okay. Living independently is not always the goal , being happy is. If you need a carer to be happy & safe that is okay

Laughing & making fun of psychosis characters [hallucinations, things you are told in delusion, not characters with psychosis] can be nice. It is a form of power over them

A giant pain in the @$$, but I put up with him because he's a useful pain in the @$$

At first I thought he was a whiny b!tc# I'd have to constantly babysit. It's a bit suspicious that his "work" happens to coincide where I go. The first few times he would show up randomly at the place. Sometimes he would accompany me on the ship ride. His "job" is harvesting monster parts. Why the Devil needs Lucy to go monster hunting, I don't know. He doesn't know either, cuz why would you question your boss, the Devil?

I wonder if the Devil eats them? That would kinda make sense.

Lucy also seems accident prone. Like one time I was trying to search for clues or secret mechanism in the overgrowth near some ruins. My back was turned for one minute, JUST ONE. I turn around to painful screaming. Somehow Lucy got himself bitten by some giant beetles. He's too embarrassed to tell me how he gets into these accidents. But seriously, how is it possible to stab yourself in the foot? I don't know why he had a knife to begin with. I have no idea where he's keeping them. Maybe he's got a bag of holding or some bull$h!t pocket dimension.

Then everything changed the one time he lost his $h!t and started to torch nearly everything to ashes. Now I've got to worry about his hair-trigger temper. It's worse since he can set things on fire (b@$stard). I don't know how contracts with the Devil work, but it's gotta suck if the side effects are growing devilish feature with heavy magic use. It's kind of unsettling to see an unhinged Lucy with horns and yellow spliced eyes setting things on fire...and laughing.

Another thing, he still hasn't learned from the last time we tangled with that wolf mafia. And this was when he was "pursuing" me. You'd think getting kidnapped and roughed up, he'd learn to shut up when it's needed. Seems like he needs to piss off or insult someone. I expect a lot of fights any time we encounter people or talking monsters. Half of the time I'm able to smooth things over without it escalating further or worse than before.

But again, those are kind of rare and few. How does a cartoon universe have some f***ed up cults or evil psychos that look like they've been ripped straight from horror flicks? I'm really upset at how much I've resorted to violence to solve my problems. The past dimensions have forced me to bring back my old skill set; how to murder and getting away with it.

Now it's not all bad. There are times where he's actually helpful. I'll admit this, I don't think I could've made it this far in my search for a way back home. As much as I dislike magic, it's really handy to have a magic-user with you. Even if said magic-user is an a$$h0le, satanic warlock. He's super knowledgeable about ancient civilizations and most magical beasts and monsters. He actually has a knack for dead languages. It's really impressive.

Sometimes he'll have a lecture or two on the history of certain sites. It's actually one of the few times when he's not being a pretentious prick. Now if only he can stop putting up this snobbish front all the time. Expeditions with him kind of remind me of the good and treacherous times with my party from the D&D dimension.

Still think his demon teapot is creepy. And that grimoire he brings out occasionally. Him chanting in whatever infernal language with that book sets me on edge. I almost expect the Devil to pop up from his summoning.

Now that you mention it. There are some things "off" about him. Especially when his eyes glow when he's searching with magic sight. For some reason those glowing yellow eyes really set me on edge. It really creeps me out when he stares at me with those eyes. Like he's looking for secrets. Sometimes he'll pause mid-sentence or mid-word when he's talking about himself. I don't know why he's so tight-lipped about himself. Wonder if he's embarrassed about some personal stuff. I don't push on that issue on principal. since I prefer to keep lots of personal stuff to myself. Sometimes he gets sullen or moody at times, but he won't tell me why or give some bull$h!t excuse.

It's a good thing I'm a light sleeper. Experience from my time in service. Hopefully it's just my paranoia, and Lucy doesn't plan to slit my throat in my sleep for whatever bath$h!t ritual. I haven't seen him doing any rituals...yet.

having read so many books this past holiday, i thought i'd also share my favourite parts of "a monster calls" by patrick ness before i go ahead and buy the book <3 here goes my 205-pages-in-one-sitting-crying-marathon (bear in mind i read the illustrated one)

(pg 17) "There's the smile I love," his mum said, reaching for the kettle as it clicked off. Then she said, with mock-horror, "She's going to bring me some of her old wigs, if you can believe it." She rubbed her bare head with her free hand. "I'll look like a zombie Margaret Thatcher." (...) "You're a good boy," she said again. "I wish you didn't have to be quite so good."

(pg 29) Open up, the monster said, its voice as clear as if the window wasn't between them. I want to talk to you.

"Yeah, sure," Conor said, keeping his voice low. "Because that's what monsters always want. To talk."

The monster smiled. It was a ghastly sight. If I must force my way in, it said, I will do so happily.

It raised a gnarled woody fist to punch through the wall of Conor's bedroom.

"No!" Conor said. "I don't want you to wake my mum."

(pg 35) Stories are the wildest things of all, the monster rumbled. Stories chase and bite and hunt.

(pg 38) Love how Ness describes Conor's grandma and the chaotic energy she brings with her at the start.

(pg 49) "Who cares even if I didn't?!" Conor shouted back. "They're just stupid berries. Woo-hoo, so scary. Oh, please, please, save me from the berries!"

The monster looked at him quizzically. How strange, it said. The words you say tell me you are scared of the berries, but your actions seem to suggest otherwise.

"You're as old as the land and you've never heard of sarcasm?" Conor asked.

Oh, I have heard of it, the monster said, putting its huge branch hands on its hips. But people usually know better than to speak it to me.

(pg 52) This was a kingdom.

("What?" Conor said, looking around his backyard. "Here?"

(The monster cocked its head at him curiously. You have not heard of it?)

("Not a kingdom around here, no," Conor said. "We don't even have a McDonald's.")

(pg 53) ("This is all sounding pretty fairy tale-ish," Conor said, suspiciously.)

(You would not say that if you heard the screams of a man killed by a spear, said the monster. Or his cries of terror as he was torn to pieces by wolves. Now be quiet.)

(pg 57) (Conor glanced again at the monster's massive arms and legs, at its raggedy, toothy mouth, at its overwhelming monstrousness. He imagined what the queen must have thought when she saw it coming.)

(He smiled.)

(pg 62) The justifications of men who kill should always be heard with skepticism, said the monster. And so the injustice that I saw, the reason that I came walking, was for the queen, not the price.

(...) You think I tell you stories to teach you lessons? the monster said. You think I have come walking out of time and earth itself to teach you a lesson in niceness?

(pg 64) There is not always a good guy. Nor is there always a bad one. Most people are somewhere in between.

Conor shook his head. "That's a terrible story. And a cheat."

It is a true story, the monster said. Many things that are true feel like a cheat. Kingdoms get the princes they deserve, farmers' daughters die for no reason, and sometimes witches merit saving. Quite often, actually. You'd be surprised.

(pg 70) "O'Malley and I have an understanding," Harry said. "I'm the only one who touches him. Isn't that right?"

(pg 72) "Because I'm not blind to how Harry works, you know," she said. "A bully with charisma and top marks is still a bully." She sighed, annoyed. "He'll probably end up Prime Minister one day. God help us all."

(pg 78) "Keep an eye on it for me while I'm away, will you?" she said. "Make sure it's still here when I get back?"

And Conor knew this was her way of telling him she was coming back, so all he did was nod, and they both kept looking out at the tree.

(pg 83) The walls were bare white except for three different prints of sailing ships, which was probably as far as his grandma's thinking went toward what boys might like.

(pg 84) The entire clock, my grandmother has one like that that stopped working. Such a staple.

(pg 96 and 97) Of the illustration..... JIM KAY!

(pg 103) But the name was well-earned, because apothecaries were ancient, dealing in the old ways of medicine, too. Of herbs and barks, of concoctions brewed from berries and leaves.

("Dad's new wife does that," Conor said as they watched the man dig up a root. "She owns a shop that sells crystals.")

(The monster frowned. It is not remotely the same.)

(pg 109) He was greedy and rude and bitter, but he was still a healer. The parson, though, what was he? He was nothing. Belief is half of all healing. Belief in the cure, belief in the future that awaits. And here was a man who lived on belief, but who sacrificed it at the first challenge, right when he needed it most. He believed selfishly and fearfully. And it took the lives of his daughters.

Conor grew angrier. "You said this was a story without tricks."

I said this was the story of a man punished for his selfishness. And so it is.

(pg 124) The general running theme of how Conor wants to be punished, but his father just says there's no point.

(pg 130) The fact that the drug Conor's mum is made from yew trees. That's it.

(pg 133) There was a small park across from the hospital with paths among the trees. As Conor and his father walked through it toward an empty bench, they kept passing patients in hospital gowns, walking with their families or out on their own sneaking cigarettes. It made the park feel like an outdoor hospital room. Or a place where ghosts went to have a break.

(pg 157) AGAIN the headmistress saying there's no purpose to punish him.

(pg 162) I'm sorry for telling everyone about your mum, read the first line.

I miss being your friend, read the second.

Are you okay? read the third.

I see you, read the fourth, with the I underlined about a hundred times.

(pg 167) d'you want this entire page? have this entire page.

"You lied," he said again.

"I think, deep in your heart, you've always known," his mother said. "Haven't you?"

Conor didn't answer her.

"It's okay that you're angry, sweetheart," she said. "It really, really is." She gave a little laugh. "I'm pretty angry, too, to tell you the truth. But I want you to know this, Conor, it's important that you listen to me. Are you listening?"

She reached out for him again. After a second, he let her take his hand, but her grip was so weak, so weak.

"You be as angry as you need to be," she said. "Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Not your grandma, not your dad, no one. And if you need to break things, then by God, you break them good and hard."

He couldn't look at her. He just couldn't.

"And if, one day," she said, really crying now, "you look back and you feel bad for being so angry, if you feel bad for being so angry at me that you couldn't even speak to me, then you have to know, Conor, you have to know that it was okay. It was okay. That I knew. I know, okay? I know everything you need to tell me without you having to say it out loud. All right?"

He still couldn't look at her. He couldn't raise his head, it felt so heavy. He was bent in two, like he was being torn right through his middle.

But he nodded.

(pg 179) The real monster, the one he was properly afraid of, the one he'd expected to see when the yew tree first showed up, the real, nightmare monster, formed of cloud and ash and dark flames, but with real muscle, real strength, real red eyes that glared back at him and flashing teeth that would eat his mother alive. I've seen worse, Conor had told the yew tree that first night.

(pg 187) Conor shook his head again, his mouth clamped shut tight, but he could feel a burning in his chest, like a fire someone had lit there, a miniature sun, blazing away and burning him from the inside.

"It'll kill me if I do," he gasped.

It will kill you if you do not, the monster said. You must say it.

"I can't."

You let her go. Why?

The blackness was wrapping itself around Conor's eyes now, plugging his noise and overwhelming his mouth.

(pg 191) You were merely wishing for the end of pain, the monster said. Your own pain. An end to how it isolated you. It is the most human wish. (...) The answer is that it does not matter what you think, the monster said, because your mind will contradict itself a hundred times each day. You wanted her to go at the same time you were desperate for me to save her. Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that make those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both.

(pg 199) "You know, Conor?" she said. "You and me? Not the most natural fit, are we?"

"No," Conor said. "I guess not."

"I guess not either." She tore around a corner so fast, Conor had to grab on to the door handle to stay upright.

"But we're going to have to learn, you know," she said.

Conor swallowed. "I know."

His grandma made a little sobbing noise. "You do know, don't you?" she said. "Of course you do."

(pg 204) And it was for this that the monster came. It must have been. Conor had needed it, and his need had somehow called it. And it had come walking. Just for this moment.

"You'll stay?" Conor whispered to the monster, barely able to speak. "You'll stay until..."

I will stay, the monster said, its hands still on Conor's shoulders. Now all you have to do is speak the truth.

And so Conor did.

He took in a breath.

And, at least, he spoke the final and total truth.

Best of Marvel: Week of August 28th, 2019

Best of this Week: Spider-Man Life Story #6: The ‘10s - Chip Zdarsky, Mark Bagley, Drew Hennessy, Frank D’Armata and Travis Lanham

All good things must come to an end. That’s the main theme of this final issue of Chip Zdarsky and Mark Bagley’s phenomenal Life Story miniseries as it recounts the last adventure that Spider-Man goes on as he leaves the world free and safe in the capable hands of the new generation of superheroes.

Comic books are cyclical. For some heroes, you get a short run, 6-12 issues and then they disappear for years until they’re needed again for some big event. For the bigger heroes, there are ongoing series that last years upon years with some BIG changes that inevitably get reversed for the sake of reestablishing the status quo. It’s understandable, recognizable names draw big money, but there’s only so many times you can see a hero fight a particular villain before it becomes trite and meaningless.

The same goes for their daily lives as well. Peter Parker has been stuck as a meandering young adult for the better part of a decade since the events of One More Day and he hasn’t been allowed to grow past his immaturity, save for the few times when the situations have become desperate and dire. Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows tried to posit a family man Peter Parker in an alternate universe, but for the most part he came off as just regular Peter with a kid to banter off of. Nick Spencer and Tom Taylor are doing their best in their respective Spider-Man series to get Spider-Man back to a position where things actively change for him, but Chip Zdarsky has gone the extra mile.

The Spider-Man Life Story miniseries goes through Peter’s life if he actually aged with the decades that all of his comics took place in. He goes through the struggles of being an American citizen straddling the fence during Vietnam, the aftermath boiling to a superhuman civil war, a better Clone Saga of the 90s, Aunt May’s death, the start of the information age and finally having children and watching them grow up. Peter Parker is allowed to grow old, change with the times. He sees old friends die, new heroes emerge, give his take on current events of the time and it’s all been amazing.

I know I mentioned that fighting the same villains over and over can seem trite and meaningless, but that’s only when they’re done for the sake of being done. In this fantastic take on the Superior Spider-Man story, Peter and Otto have their absolute final confrontation with one another over the body and soul of the young Miles Morales. Peter and Miles are shot into space to stop some sort of satellite created by Doctor Doom that allowed him to fill the power vacuum left by Captain America and Iron Man’s Civil War. As the two explore, Peter is attacked by Kraven wearing the Venom symbiote, but he dispatches the villain easily and it’s revealed that the suit was just piloting a are skeleton.

Miles questions how it was possible and Peter replies that all of his old enemies are dead and rightfully accuses Miles of being Otto Octavius, Doctor Octopus. Otto reveals his scheme, but instead of fighting Pete physically, he chooses instead to go into the mindscape and have a battle of the intellect as they were always destined to do.

Bagey pulls out all of his stops as he draws Spider-Man costumes from the various decades as well as beautifully illustrates some of the best of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery as they battle for supremacy. Set against a white background, the characters shine with their vibrant colors, dynamic posing and Bagley’s ever amazing facial expressions. I have never seen Otto look so menacingly mad and subsequently, once Peter defeats him, absolutely crushed.

Using the only person that Peter knew Otto cared about, Aunt May, she’s able to convince Otto to let go of his hatred and rage. She tells him to let Miles live his life, to move on. I really felt this and inside, it feels like Zdarsky is also telling us that sometimes we have to let the status quo go. Spider-Man has been around for longer than some of us have been alive and will be long after most of us are gone. Do we really want him to be the same mid-20s to early 30s hero that we knew, or do we want to spend our time with someone new? Miles Morales is a little more than ten years old, he’s fairly young as a character and I wholeheartedly believe that he can carry on the Spider-Man name on his own.

As the satellite starts to collapse and there’s only one escape pod left, Peter chooses to save Miles and sacrifice himself so that the future can flourish in peace due to his heroism. It’s a true heroes death and something that we almost never see (and likely never will), but if this were a true moment of closure, then I would be happy with it. Peter Parker is known for having more guilt than a Catholic who hasn’t been to Mass for a month (or Daredevil) and as he finally closes his eyes for the final time, he has a nice conversation with Mary Jane and recounts his recurring dream of the day he truly learned about power and responsibility. The last panel is his guilt finally being washed away.

If there is one series I would recommend anyone read, hands down, without a doubt it would be this one. Chip Zdarsky has a strange yet beautiful understanding of how to tell a story with characters that some of us know better than our own family members. Mark Bagley has the art skills to make us care about them immensely as well. Putting these two together as well as their amazing inker in Andrew Hennessy and colorist in Frank D’Armata, they sell you on each decade presented and how Peter changes throughout.

Spider-Man isn’t the same plucky youth we met in the 1960s. By the end of his story, he’s led a full life full of adventure and his time has been well spent making sure that it was a future worth living in. Isn’t that something that we all can only dream of?

Runner Up: Absolute Carnage #2 - Donny Cates, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer, Frank Martin and Clayton Cowles

After the events of the last issue there aren’t enough words to describe just how hopeless things are looking for anyone who has ever worn a symbiote.

Spider-Man and venom have been backed into a corner by Carnage and his horde of infected inmates at the Ravencroft Asylum. With no other options Eddie decides it best to break out and punches a hole through the wall for a tactical retreat. Eddie is typically known for his ability to brute force his way through any problem, but Carnage is a new monster altogether and as he sees Spider-Man running out of energy, he gives into the fear that they might die.

In the past, the combined might of Spider-Man and Venom has been more than enough to combat Cletus Kasady. Even when Cletus had help, he still couldn't hold a candle to the heroes, but now, they're almost low tier by comparison.

Spider-Man notes that he's almost out of web fluid, so there's no way that they're swinging out of there, so Eddie and the Symbiote utilize one of their badass upgrades, spreads his wings and flies out of Ravencroft with Peter screaming frantically "WHATISGOINGONRIGHTNOWIHATEALLOFIT!" They then land on a roof in the city, defeated and horrified that they may not be able to stop Carnage this time.

Spider-Man says that he'll try to get a hold of Wolverine and Captain America and Eddie says that he'll go find any of the lowlifes that have been Symbiotes and the two split to complete their missions. Carnage chooses not to follow after them, instead he waits and plots. This issue then turns into a bit of a catch up game for the other tie in issues while Carnage gloats to Norman that everything is running smoothly and that the world will be painted red soon enough.

Ryan Stegman absolutely smashes the art in this issue with absolutely killer detail, expressions of fear and disgusting visuals, especially in Carnage's underground lair - The sprawling mass of symbiotic flesh that covers New York's sewage system, packed full of infected humans is a dreadful sight. In the beginning of the issue, Stegman drew a splash page of Carnage with other panels overlaid, showing one of his eyes of madness and the decayed flesh that's absolutely under the symbiote. It's an absolutely terrifying sight that set the tone of this horror show.

Not only were these shots great, but Stegman kills one of the moments that happens in the Miles Morales tie-in where Miles and Scorpion (Mac Gargan) fight off the infected hordes trying to take Gargan's spine. In the tie-in, the art is more subdued and less violent, but here, Stegman turns it into something to get squeamish over. Gargan tries to abandon Miles to fight the infected alone, but is thrown back into the fight by Venom.

Unfortunately, Carnage is there waiting to pounce. He plunges a tendril into Mac's back and DIGS around to get that spine. There's no need to leave anything to the imagination as the blood spurts out, Gargan screams in agony and Kasady looks like he's having the goddamned time of his life. Mayer and Martin's colors and inks really sell just how violent all of this is. It's almost gross just how close they get the color right and how dark the scene is. Miles swoops in to save him, but… no good deed goes unpunished.

Absolute Carnage absolutely does what it set out to do. I have never been more afraid for the Marvel Universe than I am right now. Of course, there have been universal threats, but with how close and personal this feels and the looming feeling of dread knowing that Knull is THIS close to returning is mortifying. Normally a villain will just kill a hero or destroy them and whatnot, but Carnage wants nothing but massacre. If there's not torture and blood then what is it all worth?

Everything that Cates and Stegman have been building to has lead us here. To say that it's beginning to lay off would be an understatement. The dividends of fear are fore more exponential than anyone could have anticipated and this will likely go down as one of the greatest Venom/Carnage stories ever written. Absolute High Recommend.
