Not every character in a book *needs* to have a rich inner life and backstory! #To do so would bog down the story and obliterate any notion of pacing. It's just not possible. #Jin Guangyao (nee Meng Yao) is unfortunately not free from this leeway rule. He is the culprit of this murder mystery plot #and thus NEEDS to encapsulate the themes of the book. And personally he's a 7 out of 10 at best on this front (in the AD). #MDZS is about rumours twisting reality and working towards truth. And about how people & situations are rarely ever black & white #JGY has his motivations. He's well written in regards to his actions making sense for his character. #What started as good traits (drive to succeed & improve his image) became twisted over time (do anything to maintain his image) #and it's a good parallel to WWX! He has the same arc (with different traits)! Bonus points for IGY in that regard. #but man....by the time we confront this guy for murder there's not a lot of grey morality. He's just...deep in the hole *he* dug. #There's a beautiful tragedy to it! More on JGY in later comics - this is getting pretty long already!

Author Rec: Dervla McTiernan

Dervla McTiernan is from Ireland but now lives in Australia. She was a lawyer in Ireland and after moving to Australia started writing her first published novel, The Ruin. It is the beginning of a series about detective Cormac Reilly.

Cormac is a flawed yet likable character, who struggles with his life choices. There are four books in the series so far:

The Ruin

The Scholar

The Good Turn

The Sisters (which is a prequel to the series)

McTiernan's newest thriller, The Murder Rule, just debuted in May. I was very surprised when the audiobook started and the narrator had an American accent! The book takes place on the east coast of the USA. It is very different than the Cormac Reilly series. The protagonist is a law student who doesn't exactly have many scruples regarding breaking the law.

The details are authentic and I was surprised that it was so well executed by someone who didn't grow up in the States. The plot is original and interesting and contains plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged.

I have listened to all of McTiernan's novels and I like the Cormac Reilly series best. My favorite book in the series is The Ruin, which is the one you should start with if reading the books in order. "The Sisters" is very short and it didn't seem to make a difference that I listened to it last.

McTiernan has another short story only available as an Audible exclusive (Editor's Note: aka, Amazon has refused to sell copies to libraries) called "The Wrong One". It isn't on the top of my list, so I don't think there is a need to go out and subscribe to Amazon, especially when we have other great books at the library that are free to borrow!

The ICJ does not have the ability to enforce its rulings, provisional or not. They did not demand a ceasefire despite South Africa including it as a central part of their case, and instead outlined that Israel must halt their attacks on "Palestinians" (civilians) as well as ensure safety for humanitarian aid. However, since Israel has been operating under the lie that all civilian deaths are just a result of them trying to target Hamas and them being caught in the crossfire, this isn't likely to change much.

Also, Israel is led by a collection of petty monsters who will interpret this ICJ ruling, toothless as it is, an insult and will take it out on Gaza. Today might be the most violent day yet. Continue striking and keep Palestinians in your thoughts.
