QUOTE OF THE DAY Monday, November 21, 2022
"Meanwhile, we have carved out a place for ourselves among the dead; the glittering pinnacles of commerce rise along the skyline, their foundations sunk in a charnel house; and the lost lie forgotten below us as, overhead, we persaude ourselves that we are immortal and carry on the business of life." - Catharine Arnold, Necropolis: London and Its Dead

Have We Forgotten What a Fanfiction Really Is?
So, user @sneezemonster15 has kindly reminded us what a fanfiction is, which is, as directly screenshotted from her post:
Tumblr media
But is fanfiction really defined by the readers? That it's only called a fanfiction if it's READ by fans? Or is it... called a fanfiction because... it's WRITTEN by a FAN? Because if it's the former, what differentiates canon material and fanfiction? They're both READ by fans.
Well, let's stop speculating about its etymology and check the references, shall we?
Tumblr media
From thefreedictionary. Does it say anything about fellow fans needing to approve the work for it to be a fanfiction? No.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Merriam-Webster. Says the same thing. Also says that the meaning hasn't changed since 1939. So any description that deviates from the above definition is made-up aka bullshit.
Tumblr media
From Cambridge Dictionary. Still no readers in sight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From dictionary.com. I won't brush off the note too, but the site more or less defines fanfiction the same way other references do. The site goes into even more detail about the history of fanfiction. Long story short, it still serves as the same thing: an outlet for those who wish to see something different than or an extension of the original material.
Tumblr media
From Oxford Learner's Dictionaries. Same old, same old. But it's not enough, is it?
Tumblr media
From Collins Dictionary. Isn't the point clear enough yet?
.
.
.
So. Have we forgotten what fanfiction really is? Is it something made for the READERS or the AUTHOR?

Idioms, phrases, etc. reference page for Chapter 3!
I’m sure y'all are familiar with most of these, these are just the instances where I wondered if a translator app/function might struggle. Either defined these myself or borrowed from Merriam-Webster. Please feel free to let me know if I should add anything. And this really doesn’t take too long / this didn’t take me away from writing the fic, I swear! Just compiled these when writer’s block was hitting hard.
Weak in the knees: feeling physically unsteady/weak due to emotion, usually from strong attraction or fright
Blink: to back down from a challenge; give in
Relief: in terms of lighting/contrast; sharpness of outline due to contrast
Kid gloves: Sounds soooo damn weird without this context. ‘Kid’ as in a young goat, not human a child! 😭 Kid gloves were made with young goat skin and worn to handle delicate items. Like, old-timey butlers are often depicted wearing white 'kid gloves' while handling crystal drinkware. So ‘while he kept the kid gloves on’ = ‘while he was handling (noun) very carefully.’
Pull out all the stops: to do everything possible to achieve a goal
Shake it off: to kinda casually get rid of something unpleasant
Controlled burn: an intentional fire set to help prevent uncontrollable wildfires by burning underbrush in a controlled setting / under supervision
At wits’ end: the end of one’s patience or mental faculties // “at the limits of one's mental resources”; “To be in a state of distress because one has no more patience or mental stamina, often after having dealt with some kind of problem or difficult situation” (TheFreeDictionary).
Drown out: overwhelm one sound / sounds with another, louder sound
Sharp tongue: someone with a ‘sharp tongue’ tends to say harsh, cutting things (Whooo could this possibly be about? 😂)
Deal with the devil: “An agreement, bargain, deal, or exchange with a powerful but ultimately malevolent force in which a person sacrifices or abandons moral, ethical, or spiritual values in favor of wealth, power, or other benefits” (TheFreeDictionary). // “According to traditional Christian belief about witchcraft, the pact is between a person and the Devil or another demon, trading a soul for diabolical favours, which vary by the tale, but tend to include youth, knowledge, wealth, fame and power” (Wikipedia).

Exploring the Romantic Themes in AWAE 3
Just for the sake of relating the romantic themes in the various storylines especially this season.
A little context- Romanticism -an artistic and intellectual movement originating in Europe in the late 1700s and characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual's  expression of emotion and imagination, departure from the attitudes and forms  of  classicism, and rebellion against established social rules and conventions. [Definition source: thefreedictionary]
·        Individuality and personal freedom- Anne and Diana are the main specimens for this theme, Anne beautifully embracing her uniqueness and profound individuality whereas Diana getting acquainted with how liberating freedom can be. Romanticism thrives on the sublime individualistic expression and the trust in one’s emotion and subjective experience. Like to reach a certain level of wisdom/maturity, the AWAE characters go through different paths unique to their temperament. Ex: Anne and Gilbert
·        Nature as a teacher- Nature and enlightenment have gone hand in hand for Anne throughout the course of the series. She draws inspiration from her surroundings and has essentially learnt liberalism and philosophy from nature as well as deeply resonating subjects like conservation and environmentalism as well as outdoor recreation and natural appreciation. Miss Stacey taking the class for nature walks is the quintessence of this theme.
·        Spiritual/supernatural elements- Anne espousing spirituality whilst not doing away with traditional forms of worship is a recurring idea in AWAE in the seasons so far. The pagan festival of Beltane fire celebration hit right home for me (a polytheist leaning towards spirituality) The Beltane festival is influenced by contemporary witchcraft on the surface level but is more than that. Also, Jerry quoting Frankenstein for Diana further tries to cite the supernatural elements from the book.
·        Interest in the Past- Dwelling in the bygones is a common occurrence in romantic literature. Like romanticism was literally an answer to all the modernism and industrialization happening around the second half of 19th century. Reliving fond memories and in Anne’s case- trying to find more about her heritage, to find her roots, her eagerness in learning about anything that could’ve been hers like the book on Scotland is the embodiment of this trope.
·        Celebration of the simple life/ interest in the rustic and pastoral life- Avonlea is a pretty simple village far away from the fast cities of that time period, Miss Stacey noted this when she arrived saying she liked the leisurely and relaxed lifestyle. Shots of Matthew and Jerry tending to the farm, Matthew with the radish and the typical farm life are not merely filler shots- they celebrate the simple life of those times. The pastoral or the rural life creates a calm, peaceful and uncorrupted existence. The harvest in s2 showed Shirley-Cuthberts hard at work yet looked serene and one with nature. In the next episodes, we’ll see them all planting for the winter so that’ll be fun.
·        One sided/ opinionated- Predisposed and one-sided views, sometimes an unreliable narrator have often been used as protagonist in romance novels. Not saying that AOGG or AWAE do it, but many of the characters tend to think in black and white in certain situations, like with Anne- Marilla when they argued, Anne- Gilbert in the train scene, Gilbert-Winnie in almost each outing imo. But that’s a good thing for it allows us to measure their intent and depth in those situations. Also, I’d like to point out that s3 episodes don’t seem to feel more coherent than they should I guess, bc they show us different aspects of the story one at a time. Afterall, each chapter of a book delves in different issues this way and by the end a good book always lets the reader stitch the tapestry themselves rather than the other way around.
·        Idealized Women- What’s a romantic novel without classic, archetypal and empowered female characters? Women like Miss Stacey and Winnie (please for the love of God, let her be that way) fall in this category, women like Marilla and Mrs. Barry are empowered too, just in their own ways. Anne and Diana are women in the making, all the girls are. Apart from our Bosom friends- Jane and Ruby fascinate me most. Just for the fact that her “feminist” mother prefers that her daughters receive the highest education but doesn’t want them actually utilizing it, I don’t think Jane will follow the conventional path after earning her degree- she doesn’t seem to be interested in boys or girls for that matter, takes pride in her great intellect. Ruby has a long way to go in this regard and even if she doesn’t, that not a bad thing. A happily married life does not hinder one’s liberal values nor border on conservationism – LMM showed us just that with Anne’s life. Also, Mary and Bash dreaming of a full life for Delphine with all the educational opportunities.
If you’ve read this far- thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts and anything you’d like to add or say differently.

Faith
What is faith?
Confident or unquestioning belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.  - according to thefreedictionary
What do I believe in?
For the most part, everyone usually believes in some outer or inner force. For many years I have contemplated the meaning of our existence and started denying the idea of an outer force because of our lack of evidence. But as time progressed I started to understand that I can’t say that for certain because I also have no evidence to prove that. Ultimately I have decided that I will accept both possibilities, but based on my interpretation of the Universe, we came from nothing, and thus we are nothing. On a large scale, i find many of our actions pointless, with no need to really worry about them and their importance, and I think that it is good for us to do the things we simply want. But one thing I have always taken notice of is that faith, in regards to other people is usually always a good thing that brings them happiness, and puts morals onto people that prevents them from hurting others. Faith is what we get when we see others doing wholesome activities. We feel trust in the future based on those people. I believe that faith is needed.
I don’t believe that my belief really affects the way I think because, even without finding a large-scale purpose for us, I still search for a purpose for myself.
On onbeing, Miguel Mallet talks about how hope is obtained just from being ourselves and living in reality. Part of me really accepts this thought because my hope for the future is when I see others being real and essentially just being happy. Regardless of what they believe in, it is how they live their life that matters, they shouldn’t be concerned with a future when that concern will drag both them and the world around them down.
When times are tough, I usually seek out myself, I try to understand the world around me and the thoughts I feel, and by understanding myself, I am able to deal with harsh situations.

So Thinking About Episode Ardyn -- Prologue...
I can’t help but sort of wonder why the events throughout the story are a little bit convoluted, if you will. We kind of get this image of what happens, and yet there’s kind of alot that happens that we kind of are confused that it did happen? Basically, the excuses of why things occur throughout the FFXV lore is that it’s from one skewed perspective, so that’s what we ultimately get. So would Episode Ardyn be from Ardyn’s perspective and how we view his side of the story? To show us just how much he was painted as a monster? Or was Ardyn truly the hero of his story, only to be betrayed in the end?
For me... I think it’s a bit of everything because everyone’s an asshole in this story. But that’s because this is basically some political drama unfolding -- and kind of that revenge story of brothers.
LET ME EXPLAIN...
So the thing specifically that kind of got me with Episode Ardyn was that right off the bat BOOM, Somnus is doing some pretty goddamn awful things -- burning people alive if infected by the Starscourge, being all evil and plotting as he hunts down Ardyn for reasons kind of unknown, crashing Ardyn’s coronation by saying that ‘JK! I’m the king, bitch!’ -- Somnus is painted as pretty hella douchy throughout fifteen minutes of Episode Ardyn. Which, I’m not gonna lie -- he is a pretty big pricky.
But he’s not solely to blame for his actions, I think. Not apologizing for him and all. But in the realist sense that he’s painted in, Somnus knew he had to do some pretty ugly things in order to make Lucis strong. A plague broke out, so his method of remedying it was to purge the source. Keep it from spreading as it got more and more out of hand by, sadistically and rather cruelly, burning people and daemons alive. Which, as grim as it is to say, isn’t an unusual sight -- considering that this is how the plagues during the 1300′s were treated as well. Burning down entire villages with people -- affected or potentially infected -- to keep disease from spreading. That was the ‘ye old vaccination’ method.
Ardyn, however, was the perspective of the idealist and dreamer, as the episode so clearly defined. He believed in the notion that everyone can be saved, and yet this is just that: a dream. Which FFXV really does play alot upon, the idea of what you dream of versus the cold-hard reality of what’s to come. And Ardyn, unfortunately, found that out the hard way. Wanting to take the path of the idealistic ‘I’ll save everyone’ approach is what got him to become so corrupted and tainted. He learned that by trying to save everyone, he couldn’t save himself or the people he vowed to protect. In a way, this was a similar mentality that Noctis had during the start of FFXV -- the mentality of an idealist and a dreamer.
In real life, in a way, the views of a realist are often negative and people don’t often like to see eye-to-eye with them and the horrors of what reality has to offer. It’s why many people viewed Ardyn as the true king. Hell, this is an important word in grammar, but in a quick search, Adagium (later shorted to Adage), according to TheFreeDictionary means...
Tumblr media
This was the phrase that wasn’t used for Somnus or Aera, but for Ardyn. They, the people, saw him as the true king because they wanted Ardyn to save everyone. However, that’s not how to save everyone. Corrupting yourself into a giant mess of a man will only cause you suffering and ultimately leads to the fall of the kingdom.
Which is why Somnus stepped up, I think. He became the villain in Ardyn’s story because -- even if he looks up to Ardyn -- knew that Ardyn’s idealistic image of how to save the empire wouldn’t work. It couldn’t work, because not everything can be dream-like. And I think this is why Somnus bring Ardyn out -- calls him out even -- before the Empire. It wasn’t to paint Ardyn as the evil one, I don’t think: it was to make himself out to be the bad guy.
There is that line calling Ardyn a ‘seditious traitor.’ But I think that was more of a reference to Ardyn and how he brought hope to the people with his words of trying to save everyone. It countered Somnus, so Somnus retaliated and basically took the throne from Ardyn by force if he had to. He had to make the people want him as king because Ardyn -- even if he had more of a following -- wouldn’t be fit with the dreams of an idealist. Not when there was going to be a whole lot of dirty things he would have to do to make sure the kingdom stood in its glory and health. In order for Somnus to be accepted as the king, he unfortunately needed Ardyn to denounce the title of king and let Somnus rule over the kingdom.
The people chose Ardyn, but the Crystal chose Somnus. But what the heck’s a rock going to do compared to an entire kingdom of people?
Thus, I feel like Somnus lured Ardyn out to get him to public say that Somnus could become king, so the people could let Somnus rule and handle the kingdom -- regardless of how awful some of the things he needed to do would be.  But then that plan went down the drain really quick. Ardyn was on the run, Aera wasn’t really going to help Somnus out when Ardyn was the more well-liked of the two brother rulers, and then when Ardyn wouldn’t step down, a fight occurred and Aera was killed in the process of it.
But I almost feel like Somnus wasn’t looking for a fight to begin with. Things just got screwed over even more because, it’s kind of hinted with Aera’s face and dialogue about ‘having her trust’ and how she reacted when Somnus was all ‘JK! I am king!’ But she seemed to have lied about Ardyn being the true king. It was a hope that everyone wanted, but it wasn’t true. Somnus was a better fit because he did what he could to keep the kingdom going in the long-run. Ardyn was doomed to a terrible fate. And behold! A terrible fate indeed. And the corruption within Ardyn is what, I think, the gods found in Ardyn’s being. And why the picked Somnus in the long run.
But even Somnus wasn’t anticipating just how twisted Ardyn’s corruption became. So when Ardyn unleashed his inner daemons, that’s why I think Somnus spoke with such melancholy, contrary to his cocky attitude prior. ‘He’s become the monster I made him out to be...’ Somnus only wanted the people and the gods to pick him as ruler, so Ardyn wouldn’t be with the burdens, I feel. He’d be the monster of a ruler, so Ardyn can still be viewed as a savior to the people and the idealistic ruler overall. He wanted Ardyn to still be loved by the people. But if the people wouldn’t listen to Somnus and only Ardyn, how could Somnus rule? He couldn’t. Not with Ardyn there.
So I think in the long run, alot of Somnus’s actions (that I interpret, at least) have alot more of rationale behind it, just as Ardyn’s devotion and kindness is seen in it. But not all of these guys are bad people, but they aren’t good either. Somnus needed to do what he could to keep the kingdom together, but he went about it in a devious and despicable way. Ardyn was the voice of the people, but he didn’t understand the consequences of his actions or that a dream cannot trump the harsh reality of life. And Aera, had she had not let her devotion to Ardyn blind her to the reality of what needed to be done to save Ardyn, the people, and the kingdom, could have possibly deterred alot of the stuff that went down.
Despite this being a story of revenge and tragedy amongst brothers, it’s ultimately a political drama at its core. And in the end, the fantasy is based on reality. But it’s just that: based on what reality actually is.

Sorry I'm paraphrasing here, but don't you think, 'Dany came howling into the world', rather a strange choice of words? And why are there these specifically wolf associated words in Dany's narrative, 'moon', 'silver'?
Oh, you know must know exactly why I think Dany’s associated with wolves! 😅
I think Daenerys is the ice to Jon’s fire, the wolf to his dragon! (I know y'all love thinking of Jon as a Stark, but if he’s a Stark then his siblings are all Tullys. Hey, I don’t make the rules!)
The quote? Oh, it gets better!
“Daenerys Stormborn, she was called, for she had come howling into the world on distant Dragonstone as the greatest storm in the memory of Westeros howled outside”
The word “howling” is used all over the series to describe any number of noises, sure, but what makes this quote interesting is that it’s used twice, and in reference to Dany’s origin.
One of the most irritating parts of writing is using the same word or a variant one after the other - it’s one of my biggest grievances as a fanfic author, and I’m always on the lookout for these recurrences as a beta. That said, this could be a simple case of both GRRM and his editor(s) overlooking repetition… or it could be intentional.
Here are just a few examples of GRRM applying the appropriate house sigils/animals to dialogue:
“Is this how justice is done in the Vale?” Tyrion roaredTyrion threw back his head and roared. Tyrion had roared at them and sent them runningJoffrey staggered and whirled around, roaring cursesHe peered in, saw Bran howling out the window“AAHOOOOOOO,” Bran howled
Either way, “howling” is strongly associated with wolves. Thefreedictionary describes it as:
“a long plaintive cry or wail characteristic of a wolf or hound”
and
“(of a dog, wolf, or the like) to utter a characteristic loud, prolonged, mournful cry”
Also, the only characters who seem to hear wolves howling in the books are Starks, those with POVs while accompanying Starks or remembering wolves howling while near the Starks and… Daenerys.
Also, while trying to research why the Stark sigil looks so damned dragony, I stumbled across this:
Tumblr media
This blew my mind, and I went searching to confirm it, myself:
Tumblr media
We happen to know GRRM is a huge fan of Tolkien, it’s one of the biggest inspirations for the series. And when you see the clever insight and planning that went into names like Bran (raven) or Sandor (defender), I can’t accept that Drogon is simply named as such because of Drogo’s name. Drogo is, after all, just a means to an end. And that end is dragons. In terms of creative planning, Drogon almost certainly came first and Drogo second.
Either way - Daenerys named her boy Stone Wolf.
In the effort of not droning on and on, if you’re interested in more connections between Daenerys and the Starks and the Starks and Dragons, I’d check out our website - where my co-conspirator, the brilliant @ktwrites  , found a very compelling connection between the Starks and Kipling’s The Jungle Book (another one of GRRM’s heroes), as well as a more in-depth look at Ghost and how he just might’ve been intended for Daenerys, as well as evidence of Dany’s warging abilities!
Thanks for the ask! 🐺
