There's something about like. A certain genre of posts / Online Opinions about insecurity/depression/misery/complaints that are so unhelpful that they wrap right around to being straight up hilarious. and it's the ones that are more or less written to the tone of "Feeling bad? That's gross!" Like, just so you know, don't voice your insecurities/ have low self esteem, because that's offputting! You're gross and weird. Don't be insecure about that, though. That would be stupid if you felt insecure about people disliking you for being insecure. Not attractive. You should be thinking about being as attractive as possible. You shouldn't make comments about suicide, even if you're suicidal! Keep those thoughts entirely to yourself. Make sure nobody around you knows you're thinking about this. It would Make Them Uncomfortable. It's better to keep these thoughts in your head where they can fester. Don't post OR talk to friends with complaints about you feeling miserable or depressed. Tbh people who are sad/upset a lot? Kinda a red flag! You are probably miserable because you're a bad person and you've brought this on yourself. If you don't have friends, it's because you're awful to be around. Easy! Solved the problem for you. And no, there is no nuance to this, got it? So, make sure to feel bad about feeling bad, but don't feel bad about it, because, well, that's just gross. And annoying! You might've wanted your brain rotted thoughts to be Peer Reviewed, you might have just needed to vent- you might've been hoping for some comfort, to get things off your chest. Well, don't! btw not to make everything about My Fucking Guy but i honestly think one of the things that seperates q!phil out from the other islanders is the approach he takes to dealing with the lack of agency + control all the islanders have over whatever the fuck the federation's doing.

it shows up most prominently whenever tubbo is excitedly telling him about the 'progress' he's made with cucurucho or various investigations (ie: trapping him into a corner with the 'do you have free will' questions), and phil always shoots it down w an immediate 'that doesn't mean anything. curucuho will say anything to mess with you. you can't take anything he says as true.'

and it's not that phil is... a paticularly pessimistic character? he's just EXTREMELY practical. like, he's yet to give up on anyone EVER finding ANY answers (he was the one who initially gave the federation that one week ultimatum w the cage for a cage stream), he just doesn't trust the idea that curucuho is ever going to voluntarily give them. they're uncontrollable + senseless - you might as well argue with the weather.

and like, if that's how he sees the one (1) and only point of contact the islanders HAD with the federation for months, it explains a lot abt his characters lifestyle! ofc he sits on the wall all day, talking to his kids, and keeping his head down. he believes that the federation wants nothing more than to drag the islanders into sick games + tasks just so they can fuck with their head (ie: curucuho revealing he was the one cellbit gathered all that information for). and while he can't totally PREVENT any of that from ever impacting him, he can make sure his kids are well fed, well protected, and as happy + comfortable as he can manage. this is objectively not a perfect situation, there is a guaranteed amount of suffering + fear that he can't mitigate, but he can at least account for it.

like, he REFUSES to engage. whenever curucho shows up, he treats them with total ambivalence. he's not going to get riled up by anything they do, he's not going to get super attached to the guy, he's just gonna laugh it off and irish goodbye it when things drag on. the ONLY time he's strayed from that general guiding principle has been since he's lost his eggs, and can no longer afford to let the federation's fuckery go: those are his fucking kids.

hence the completely unprecedented levels of outward rage and sadness and terror he shows throughout the birdcage streams - almost all directed directly to cucurucho. it's all a completely fair + proportional response to the horror the islanders are being subjected to, but it feels so different bc until now, q!phil has been so dedicated to not reacting, and not giving the federation any sign that they're actually getting to him.

The Most Beautiful Detail in Frozen 2

Frozen 2 has many little details that add to its emotional depth and impact. Some are more prominent, others more subtle. They work as foreshadowing, or show the bonds between the characters, or are subtly hinting where the heroes are at their emotional journey. The latter may be scarce, but they are by far the greatest.

And the most beautiful of them belongs to Show Yourself.

Show Yourself is the peak of Elsa's character arc. It's the moment she accepts herself: all that makes her unique, human and magical. The moment she steps into the center of the Fifth Spirit symbol, she's surrounded by memories.

Most of them are nice, others are a dread to remember. Some aren't even hers, which I doubt Elsa paid attention to. Because then, a vision of Iduna appears, in the middle of her daughter's memories of her.

Now, I think it's important how most of the memories are repeated throughout the shots.

Amongst the multitude, there's the moment Elsa was firstly given the gloves and taught the horrid mantra of "Conceal, Don't Feel"; the only memory of hers (or at least the only one I noticed) that appears once.

It happens to be behind her. Which I find incredibly fitting for the moment. Yes, it literally appears behind her, but if we see it metaphorically; her past is behind her. She can't outrun it, she can't erase it, but she doesn't have to look back. She doesn't even turn. It's not even in her field of vision once. She looks forward. Not to "Conceal, Don't Feel" but to "Show Yourself".

Now to the emotional punch of it. As Elsa sings 'show yourself', she looks at her hands.

And then at her left hand. The hand her Father held onto when he taught her to hide herself.

And as she shows herself, as she says it, says it with her whole chest, overjoyed at the truth of it, the memory behind her disappears.

Elsa, of course, didn't forget. Nor did Ahtohallan. The memory didn't vanish; it faded on the glacier's wall. Much like Elsa's memory.

Those words, that moment, they don't affect her anymore. She knows better. Now, every time she needs something to hold on to, to calm her doubts, and remind her who she is, she will go back to "Show Yourself", not "Conceal, Don't Feel".

The memory that plays in her head again and again, the mantra she mouths to herself before every decision, public outing, or emotional/upsetting situation has been replaced.
