how do you feel about march eridan?

Ok disclaimer before I get into it, trolls wearing dresses = great and fantastic; in fact, given that the gender differences in troll culture are so much less significant, ALL the male trolls should own some femme-ass clothes, even if it's as simple as just having a skirt version of their pants, and it's a little lame that we didn't get that.

That said, March Eridan specifically kind of annoys me because it has 0 basis in canon (aside from some shoutouts in things like ministrife sprites) but has taken over Eridan discussions so wholly that it's become widely accepted as part of his character that he's really into femme stuff when the opposite is true, and he's got some pretty major characterization tied up in the fact that he does lean so masc, and what specific type of masc he tends to present as.

So first of all, Eridan dresses up to emulate Dualscar, and this is very obvious and straightforward; if you've read the big essay I have pinned to my blog, you know that this is all a part of his basic "I have to be a big bad sea dweller or Something Bad Will Happen" suite of issues.

Thus, we can ALSO assume that the choices he made that aren't made to emulate Dualscar are reflective of his ACTUAL taste in clothing. For example, blue pants instead of purple and black - I believe that this is because Eridan likes to dress up in the blood colors of his dates; he wears a lot of blue because he's hatedating Vriska (and never quite seems to get 100% over her), and we also see this in the rings on his fingers - half of which are fuchsia, for Feferi.

So that leaves us with the glasses, shoes, and scarf. And we know why he dresses like that! It's because he's a hipster. (The scarf has an added benefit of being associated with harry potter-style wizards).

And very specifically, a masc hipster from the era - the glasses and the ugly-ass shoes are dead giveaways. The slicked-back hair is reminiscent of that fashion style, too. He is also a douchebag. This too is important. He draws from character archetypes of the time that were generally agreed upon to be the most punchable people in existence; his introduction calls him "KIND OF A TOOL" and he consistently acts according to that. Like, I mean, just LOOK at those shades. Those are not the shades of somebody you want to be trapped in a conversation with.

A fairly accurate Eridan fashion board would look something like this:

And, like, it kind of matters that he dresses like this specific breed of pretentious male douchebag; on a meta level, that's the impression he's supposed to give the audience, and on a diegetic level, he CHOOSES to look like this because he has these kinds of interests, but is relegating them to secondary accessories.

We never hear him talk about liking hipster shit; we have to hear it from Karkat and glean it from his design. This is because, as I've talked about before, he actively distances himself from things that make him happy, things that he'd enjoy. The constant push-pull between his ACTUAL interests, and the ones he thinks he has to have because he's supposed to be a big nasty sea dweller, is a huge part of his characterization - for example, the way he keeps claiming that magic and wizards are fake and shitty, but has no less than 6 wizard statues in his respiteblock alone, and cared about his crappy wands enough to bring them onto the meteor.

So that's one of my other issues with March Eridan and the general fanon that he'd be really into femme clothes (and, by extension, fashion) - he wouldn't be forthcoming about it, even if it was true. He has a deep sense of shame and insecurity surrounding what few interests he actually has, because they feel stupid, ridiculous, and frivolous, next to the intense anxiety he has about playing the role society gave him. He's got a very strong sense of duty that makes it very difficult for him to relax and actually enjoy something. Which, you know, probably feeds into his hipster-ness - a movement often defined more by what it doesn't approve of than what it does.

Canon Eridan, when he has a choice of what to wear, overwhelmingly chooses masculine clothing with hipster connotations. And this matters, it's part of his characterization, it says something about him, the same way that it's important that Karkat dresses very simply and baggily (we all know how many insecurities Karkat has about his body) or that Sollux's bifurcation is shown in his clothes. So please please please don't misunderstand my dislike of March Eridan as me saying I don't want him in dresses; I purely dislike it because it's usually SUCH a misread of his character.

And to prove it, here's my other gripe with March Eridan stuff: all the dresses shown in the not-canon "official" artworks don't even flatter his bodytype. Why do his custom mannequins in Pesterquest have CURVES when his Pesterquest sprite doesn't?????

Please, I'm begging you, there are guides for dressing this body type, and even historical fashions that deliberately try to emulate this body type, please if you're going to dress him femme and HC that he enjoys fashion, please put him in clothes that flatter him please

I think Eridan should own some femme clothes, because on Alternia, there are very few differences between the genders, he's rich enough to afford it, and he clearly has more of an interest in fashion in general - but I think the fact that he has a clear canon preference for masculine styles is significant, and I'm really annoying, so it kind of does bothers me that this is a controversial opinion. That being said, I don't want to tell people what they Should and Should Not do, because that's lame. Who cares. He's a fictional character, let people draw him in dresses. Would be very happy if this post causes people to draw him in different styles of dresses though :pray:

Starfinder Character Concept: Entropic Darksider

Because I was browsing around the class descriptions more, and my Vercite Darkside industrial worker is now a Vanguard instead of a Soldier/Mystic. Because it fits so nicely. Darkness, ice, isolation and decay. I like it. It’s so easy to imagine an incident, an accident, they got locked out of the installation in the polar night, or maybe less of an incident and more of a slowly building fascination, and the vast midnight ice sheets of the Darkside of Verces induced an almost spiritual understanding of entropy for them.

Yes. We’re doing this.

Character Concept: Xalke Syzon, Vercite Entropic Darksider

Name: Xalke Syzon

Age: 47

Starting Statistics:

Strength 8 (-1), Dexterity 16 (+3), Constitution 16 (+3), Intelligence 10 (+0), Wisdom 13 (+1), Charisma 10 (+0)

I possibly should fix the racial flaw to Strength, but it’s not going to be used until 10th level, so … frankly, I’m not gonna. I’ll put some in with ability boosts as we level, but at the minute I like Wis more.

Starting Skills:

We’ve got 6 at level 1. Acrobatics, Athletics, Perception, Stealth are the main four I’m going to level continuously. I’ll also put a point in Survival and Sense Motive, just for theme here. Later on, might put some in Intimidation, Mysticism, Piloting and/or Engineering?

Race: Winterborn Ryphorian

I wanted a Vercite race, but verthani wasn’t really doing it for me. I did consider shirren and strix, but they’re both more commonly found on Fullbright, not the Darkside. But there is a note that there’s a decent population of ryphorians on Verces, because the tidally-locked divisions remind them of the years-long seasons of their own Triaxus. And if we want a character themed around ice and polar survival, winterborn ryphorians do nicely.

There’s also an interesting thing where ryphorians are culturally rather communal, which might make an interesting tension with a character that’s drawn to isolation out on the ice.

For our racial traits we get Keen Senses (+2 to Perception), Low-Light Vision, Cold Resistance 5 from Winterborn, and a bonus feat. Just because we’re a Darksider, I’m going to take Toughness. We’re just a real hard-bitten sort of a gal out here.

Description:

A lean, rangy, hardbitten woman, absolutely snow-pale from stem to stern, dusted in white fur, and with short, thick white hair that she’s never bothered to dye. Xalke’s never been one for fashion, and there was never any call for it out on the ice sheets and industrial platforms of the Darkside. Of course, that might have been more reason to go for a bit of colour and individuality, but Xalke’s always been one to settle into her environment, always been a still, watchful, slightly morbid sort of presence, blending blithely back into the snowfields.

Theme: Death-Touched

I was really flip-flopping between this and Void Nomad. Both give Con, both fit thematically with a Vanguard’s entropy, and near-death experiences and/or undead encounters are both likely easy to come by working out on the ice sheets of the Darkside. In the end, though, Death-Touched won, just because I might prefer a Perception bonus to a Survival one, and the eventual cold resistance just feels thematic?

(If I’m reading it right, the ryphorian cold resistance will stack with it, so long as we don’t have any other source of cold resistance. The racial resistance stacks with one other source)

So at first level, we get +1 Con, +1 bonus to Perception, and we can use Perception to ID and recall knowledge about undead and negative energy effects.

Class: Vanguard

It’s a melee martial class but it’s Constitution based, and the theming is fantastic. “To you, the inevitable decay of the galaxy is simply a force to shape, control, and even temporarily reverse.” Something happened in your life and you got tuned into the wavelength of inevitable change and decay, to the point that you can reach down through the grounding of your own body and manipulate it. This is basically damage manipulation, either to cause or prevent, but I love the way it’s framed. Definitely A+ theming on this class.

On Verces, and specifically the Darkside, there’s possibly an influence of philosophies like the Ascetics of Nar, the ice cult in Fastness of the Ordered Mind. A compare/contrast sort of deal, maybe. The Ascetics see ice as a blueprint for the frozen oneness of the universe, and some allow it to ravage their bodies to allow that blueprint to remake them. The vanguard channel their senses of the entropic universe through their bodies to allow them to manipulate their surroundings. There’s … not a link, nothing direct, there’s two different philosophies in action, but there’s certainly some calls for comparison there.

Not that Xalke has anything to do with the Ascetics of Nar, beyond having heard of them and vaguely considering them a bunch of masochistic nutters. But maybe the ice does have an effect, whether you plan to let it or not. Maybe if you do commune with the ice and the darkness, gradually over time, or intensely for a brief period (such as, say, going out to check a facility’s fuel lines for ice-damage and getting snowed out for a nearly lethal amount of time, even for a ryphorian), then … maybe it does wake something in you. A sensation of vastness. A physical understanding of it. A touch of something incomprehensibly vast that you can nonetheless feel in your bones.

Maybe you come out a vanguard. And you can pass that understanding, some glimpse of it, from your flesh to other people’s. Heh.

So, as a Level 1 Vanguard, we have the following features:

Entropic Pool, the pool of entropy points that fuel our abilities. We have 16 Con, so we can have a max of 3 EP currently. We only get them in combat (in various ways), they do a bunch of different things, and as long as we have at least 1 in the pool, we get a +1 to AC, we can spend 1 to get a +10 speed bonus, or boost an entropic strike by 1d4 per EP.

Entropic Strike. I love this thing. You channel your field of entropy into a(n advanced) melee weapon that you always have. Vanguards don’t ever have to buy weapons (as long as they’re happy in melee). ES scales, as far as I can tell, just fine by its lonesome. Also, it’s Con based, not Str. It’s entropy channelled through your body. I love that. It does either acid (to emulate entropic dissolution) or bludgeoning (for raw crushing force) damage, or a mix of both, and you can choose each time. And you can deliver it with any bit of your body. You can headbutt someone for entropic damage, if you want. Is that a good idea? I don’t know, but it’s a hell of an image. And maybe kind of fitting on our icefield industrial worker. Heh. Though it might be more fun to flavour it as a calmer, colder sort of attack. Maybe not even attack. Gesture. A gentle kiss of the ice. A seeping breakdown of your flesh, gifted gently …

Or maybe not. Xalke isn’t sadistic. Maybe we’ll just headbutt people, like a proper blue collar worker who had no philosophical pretensions, she just got locked out into the serene black-and-white void of the ice for too long, and came away a bit touched.

We also get shield proficiency at 1st level, our first feat (I think we’ll take either Fleet, to get into melee faster, or Weapon Focus: Advanced Melee, to help out our entropic strikes a little) and our Vanguard Aspect, sort of a subclass. I kind of feel like I need more scientific or philosophical background than I have to parse what these mean on a flavour/philosophical level, but I think …

Xalke’s always been rather solitary. Strikingly so, for a ryphorian. She’s always been at home out in the silent darkness of the icefields. She’s the one people do send to check fuel lines, and stand watches, and pull stuff down from remote corners of the mining rig. And she came into her abilities as a result of near-lethal isolation, and the vast understanding that came with it. So I think we’ll go for the Boundary aspect, which involves manipulating the isolation of a system to protect it from entropy. So we get a(nother) Perception boost, we get EP from avoiding damage as well as taking it, and we can use our abilities later to help allies mitigate damage. Which is … it feeds back into ryphorians as communal people, too. As isolated as she is, Xalke still understands and feels, on a physical level, what community is for. She’s on the edges of it, but she’s not rejecting it. She just likes her space, is all. But she’ll help out where she can.

Summary:

On the whole, Xalke is very much a tough, solitary, blue-collar sort of woman, someone who’s spent her life doing a hard job in a tough -but beautiful- environment, and who enjoys the isolation of it to a degree. But she’s not misanthropic, or sadistic. She has a sort of frontier helpfulness about her. If you need help she’ll do right by you.

How did she end up adventuring? Well, I’m thinking that after her little ‘incident’, the mining company wound up letting her go. For a couple of reasons, both wanting to distance themselves from her ‘incident’ and the possibility of having to pay injury benefit, but also because superstition is very much a thing out on the ice, and she came back tangibly changed enough that she unnerved her co-workers. If someone gets changed out on the ice, you don’t invite them back in. You don’t know what she is anymore. Not for sure. And maybe it was more than cold out there. She’s death-touched, too. Exposed to ‘strange radiation, dimensional rifts, or magic’. Maybe that wasn’t a normal storm that snowed her out. You can’t let something like that walk around the rig. No offense. You’re a good woman, and it’s not like we want to hurt you none. But you can’t let something like that on the rig. Even if she’s fine herself, you don’t know what else she’s inviting down.

So she wound up cut loose. And, yeah, she could’ve got another job, there’s enough rigs and smugglers operations and what have you out on the ice, but maybe she took it as a sign. She’d touched something vast. She’d come away with magic in her body, in her bones. She’s no ascetic, she’s not one of them nutters in the monastery, but she does need to go out and maybe explore what she is.

And, maybe, help some people along the way. Pay it forward. It might come back around.

hello!! I saw your Spencer Reid headcanons and I LOVE IT!! I'd like to put my own in, if that's okay! I'm around 5'5, I have short brown hair with matching eyes. I've always felt super SUPER insecure about my nose, though-- it seems too flat for my face. my style completely ranges, but I stick more towards a 'flashy' esque-- I like being impressionable to whoever I see, even if I've known them for years! I'm an ENTP. My interests are musical theater, art, basically anything in the fine arts and I love it! except for instruments... not very good with those. though I am trying to get back into piano! I'm (ironically) learning "The Smile of a Child", better known in it's appearance in the episode "Coda". I love singing, it's a huge passion of mine. I'm very outgoing, and I like meeting people, but I'm more than a bit awkward while meeting new people. I only like eye contact after looking over someone's body language, and learning their name. I'm insecure about my laugh but I rock it-- I just think I'm a bit too loud and obnoxious at times. I study psychology in my free time-- especially the aspects that sleep has on our lives. Can I just say how much I’m LOVING  this extra depth we’re getting for Masaya?

this is just gonna be a mess of me blurbing out kneejerk reactions and random thoughts and definitely NOT a super deep analysis you have been warned lmao

Like a lot of people I wasn’t super fond of Masaya in the originals. I don’t recall HATING him, but I was indifferent at best and annoyed at worst. He was just so very boring to me and barely in the show until the Blue Knight started appearing, if memory serves. He didn’t really have much personality besides being a Nice Boy and caring for the environment (which is hilarious that that wasn’t enough for 13 year old me cuz like. I literally wanna be a wildlife biologist jskdfjsd). We didn’t really get to know much about him until late in the series. Any little drops of personality we DID get were given and then IMMEDIATELY never touched upon again and when compared to the time we were given with Everyone’s Favorite Croptop Disaster, Masaya just had nothing going for him in the personality department

The reboot so far imo is doing WONDERFULLY with remedying that and I’m enjoying it immensely

Like him being pissed and even tearing up about Ichigo still being in the zoo after they were told to evacuate? (my guess is he looked for her after evacuating and didn’t see her in the crowd, thus fearing that she was still in there). Chef’s kiss. Wonderful. Show us the emotions! Especially with how quickly he apologized afterwards! Definitely makes sense for someone making a sudden outburst like that. And if Masaya still has that “I felt like I HAD to be perfect at everything” backstory, it makes even more sense cuz someone who must be the Polite Golden Child constantly probably doesn’t raise their voice at people often

Also in episode 2 when he was checking in on Ichigo making sure she was okay (we’re gonna ignore the fact that he just. Seems completely unperturbed about passing out after being bodychecked by a Big Rat and waking up at home. Like gurl. Ur not gonna question that at all? Maybe we’ll get something about that later, but probably not XD) I LOVED how Masaya looked affected by taking Ichigo’s hand too! Ichigo wasn’t the only one getting a bit flustered, Masaya was a bit lost in the moment too! And after Ichigo yeets herself tf out of there Masaya looks at his hand like!! That’s right give me his reactions I’m loving it!!

I’m also digging that Masaya is Hesitant about Ichigo even! Like she DID admit that she didn’t know all that much about animals, but when inviting him to the zoo she said she wanted to learn more and proved as such while at the zoo, and it seemed like it resonated with him! I loved that!

Him admitting he was nervous about being separated from Ichigo again and just the general Anxiety he was exuding was fantastic. ESPECIALLY when Ichigo later asked in the cat cafe or w/e about him being nervous. And then they were all just staring into each other’s eyes and whatnot. Ichigo looked all blushy in typical shojo fashion, but Masaya is just. Idk he looks more like he’s staring intently, like he’s trying to figure something out. Like maybe if he SQUINTS REAL HARD while looking at her it’ll alllll become clear. It’s reading to me like a dude who’s like “I’ve literally never been interested in a single other human before and have 0 experience knowing what these emotions are or how to handle them wtFACK is it about you specifically” (which I’m so freaking giddy about cuz that’s an angle I’ve been dabbling with in the fic I’m trying to write I’m sldkfjlsdkJKSDJFS) And if that IS what’s going it just makes things even more interesting for understanding him later, if he HAS felt ostracized by the general human species and/or harbors some level of hatred for humans in general

Just. AH! I’m so excited and hoping we get to learn more about Masaya himself. I’m happy we’re getting more obvious tells that Masaya is having Emotions and is capable of being flustered with Ichigo like she is with him!

Also finally: ngl. Masaya won me over in a huge way when he explained to Ichigo about cats biting because of over-stimulation sdjfksdj. Like is anyone else also a crazy cat lady in training and that scene just stabbed straight through your heart or made you laugh?? cuz YEAH. YEAH THAT IS WHY SOME CATS RANDOMLY ATTACK YOU DURING PETS! OH MY GOSH I CAN’T EVEN SAY HOW MANY DOZENS OF PEOPLE I’VE HAD TO EXPLAIN THAT TOO. (AND JUST EXPLAINING CAT LANGUAGE IN GENERAL). And he even specified that most cats WILL communicate if they’re starting to feel rowdy, but it can be difficult for people to read sometimes, especially if you don’t know to even look for something. Like goddammit. They really made me start liking Masaya by making him understand feline body language. They fucking got me. I feel bamboozled, I’ve been had, who knew I was that easy 😩

Extra Out Of Canon

This is a bit of fun that, while set in R&L, is not part of NobleTheft (Tarnished Silver and Regrets and Love) canon.

I’ve been asked a few times why Weiss Came Back in time with Roman, and while there literally is no Big Reason—Weiss guesses that perhaps it was a twist of Fate or a Final Wish granted to her, but doesn’t care because she long ago learned to accept the blessings gifted to her—I decided to write an omake, an Extra.

Side note before starting; this does imply a crossover, in a loose sense as no characters or settings actually mix beyond what gets mentioned. (And yes, the title here is a play on words: both “Extra: Out Of Canon” and “Extra Out Of Canon”)

Weiss blinked as the world around her seemed to freeze, and felt a moment of panic before a rather unassuming man—perhaps in his 30s, by the faint greying of his close cut combover above an otherwise youthful face partly covered by a trimmed and greying goatee—stepped up to her table at the outdoor café and sat down.

“Hello, Mrs. Torchwick.” his tone was gentle, a faint rumble in an otherwise mid-or-high range voice, as he offered her a smile.

“Is this your doing?” she asked, one brow arched as she relaxed back into her chair.

“After a fashion.” he shrugged, smiled turning sheepish as he rested his hands—fingers woven together—on the table, “Call me Westvale.”

“What’s going on, then?” Weiss leaned forward, curious despite her caution, “A deal or a threat?”

“Neither.” he shook his head, “Answers instead. Ones you’ll forget until your time is ending and you march on to another place.”

“Ominous.”

Westvale ducked his head, wincing, before offering an apologetic smile, “Not my intention.”

“Then what questions do you have answers for?”

“Why you came back.”

The calmly delivered words had her instantly sitting straighter, gaze focused and sharp.

“In another time and place, the Grimm were a threat dealt by a woman bitter and twisted by hate; a woman who wanted to burn the world down and start over, stopped only by Oz.” he held up a hand, forestalling her, before he continued, “People died, the world torn in chaos. And while that story is not yet done, some wished for better things-” a sigh, “-and after a fracture cracked reality to shards, those of us who Write took our chances.”

“...what?” Had she been anyone else, this would’ve sounded like the words of a madman to them. But after what she had experienced, it was merely... fantastical.

“Instrumentality; an infinite number of worlds in infinite combinations, all with only one single unifying rule,” his gaze locked with hers, a weight settling in the air, “in all of them, you exist. In one way or another, you and everyone you know exists in each of those worlds. This one... this one I chose to touch and shape.”

“Like, what, some deity?” Weiss glared, hands flat on the table, “What gave you the right to meddle in my life? Did you take Ruby from me, back then?”

“Everything has a cost.” the man slumped, eyes dropping to the table’s surface, “To remove the Woman and her ties to this Place, a cost had to be paid.”

“So you decided Ruby and Yang were perfect, despite what that did to me.” she sneered, wishing for her rapier, “That’s the opposite of building a better world.”

“Beacon stood, Ozpin and Roman lived-” Weiss flinched at her husband’s name, but Westvale kept going, “-and you found happiness. And at the end, twisting things to put you here was far easier.”

“You took me from my family-!”

He sliced his hand through the air, cutting her off, “They live on, just as they would have had you simply died instead of coming here. But that was the cost; you Came Back, but lost contact with your children. Instead, you once again have your team, and Roman is still here. You can and are rebuilding.”

He spread his hands, regret and sorrow in his eyes, “You have it far better than the Children, whose world is the one sundered; the very sundering that allowed me to change things here.”

Weiss stopped herself, letting what he said sink in. Someone, out there, had paid a terrible cost; she could feel it in the weight of his words, someone suffered—continued to suffer—for her to have lost and regained her Best Friend away from a broken world.

“A noble theft; I stole your happiness, in Ruby, so you could have something better. So you could have family in both Roman and Ruby.” His smile was lopsided, sorrow and affection there, “We love the people we touch, when we ReWrite parts of your stories. We know it hurts, but... the payout is worth it, don’t you think?”

He gestured to the side, and as Weiss followed his hand she found Roman—not far off, but then he never wandered far if he had a choice—frozen mid-step as he was walking up to her from the sidewalk. The love sparking in his gaze, held within this moment like a picture, took her breath like it always did.

“Yes.” she breathed.

Yes, she’d suffered over the loss of Ruby and Yang; Yes, she’d suffered through the loss of her children. But also: yes, she loved that man so much it was almost too much, ready to burst from her and swallow her whole in the most wonderful way; yes, she had Ruby and her team, she had Roman.

“They found resolution too.” the sudden words drew her gaze back to the man, the Author, “Full circle. Running from pain, learning and growing, then running back; because how else can we fix things without facing them?”

“A common theme?” she asked, curious, recognizing it was much like herself and Blake.

“No one wants to suffer.” he gave a nod, then stood and started to walk away, “But we grow there; most often much more than any moment of peace. So we face it.”

He stopped, leveling a shy smile over his shoulder, “And it isn’t just for you, or me; others see your life and find inspiration there. One unifying rule: I see you, I know you, I love you.”

For those not familiar with Instrumentality, it’s the trigger event at the end of Neon Genesis Evangelion that fractured that world into near-endless repeats until the main protag, Shinji, finally grew up and faced the trials of his life and moved on, closing the loops—at the end of Evangelion 3.0+1.0—and collapsing Instrumentality.

Additionally, I used a partial quote from the Evangelion Doujin Re-Take, which I have always—since finding it—used as the “justification” for AU stories set in the NGE/Evangelion universe.

During instrumentality an infinite number of worlds were created; from the Edo period to the end of the millennium. All of them different, all of them unique. But all those worlds have one unifying rule in common; in every single one we met, and invariably, we fall in love. And sometimes we hurt each other. And we connect to each other deeply. Worlds made with both you and me in the center. That's the single, unifying rule. (Re-take 04)

Weiss is my favorite character from RWBY, her character growth over the series is wonderful to watch; and seeing how others portray her, and how I write her, is always a joy.

Idk if this is a hot take or not, but I love historically accurate costumes. Though what I love even more than that is historically 'accurate' but not realistic . Or to be more precise, costumes that take elements of the time period and make them fantastical in a way that is very clearly a stylistic choice and not done in a way that just shows they dont know their history.

To be clear about what I mean I'll give you one example each of a design I DONT like, and then a design I DO.

First example; Queen Quinevere from Merlin

(I'm using Quinevere for this example but really it applies to EVERY SINGLE WOMAN IN THIS SHOW) This dress is beautiful yes, my problem is that, guess what, CORSETS WERE NOT A THING DURING THE TIME PERIOD MERLIN TAKES PLACE. Even the ancestor of a corset would not be invented for another thousand years. Idk where this misconception of that every woman in europe from year 0 to 1900 wore restrictive clothing comes from, but it wasnt until like the 1400s at the EARLIEST that this article of clothing started being used. (I'm not even a clothing historian! It literally takes like 10 minutes of research to find this out! If you're more interested in European clothing history I highly recommend Bernadette Banner on YT)

Next we have an example I DO like

Look at this shit. This takes place in the early 1700s. Dude is covered in black leather, belts, a fucking PAULDRON for some reason??? I love everything about this. It's so unrealistic, but it gets away with it because it's not trying to BE realistic. It's like when an anime character has a sword that's way too big for them. Makes no sense yet it just works. I'm not good with words, but what I'm trying to say is this works because it's just realistic enough to fit in with the rest of the cast and the setting, but still has the fantasy design vibe to it. Like notice how it's clearly designed to be biker fashion, yet has no zippers. Zippers didnt exist yet! Is this outfit something anyone in this time period would wear? Absolutely not! Is it a bitchin design? Fuck yeah!!!

So I guess my overall point of this

TL;DR if you're gonna get something wrong. Learn what's correct, then do it wrong on purpose.

Can we please talk about Drag Race España? Cause I have so many emotions.

This season literally ticks all the boxes of what a great reality show is supposed to be while also keeping it healthy.

1. The Queens are all so loveable and talented and each has a unique expression and way of doing drag. All the classics were there: The young fashion queen, the experienced comedy queen, the drag differente queen, the wholesome supportive one, the social media famous one, an old Hollywood glamour pageant type queen etc, yet none of them felt overproduced to fit a category or like they were desperately trying to emulate the image of the US queens, not even Sagittaria who stated she started drag after going to Werq the World and whose name is directly inspired by a US queen (Aquaria). Also, come through 4 non binary queens and an Indigenous queen! We love to see the representation!!!!

2. They were all very "human", if that makes sense, without having to forcibly yank sob stories out of them. When they got emotional it was clear it was the queens' choice to speak on their emotions and not forced trauma porn.

Inti's moment of speaking about body dysmorphia and trans struggles, Killer taking about why she actively chose to always be kind, Pupi talking about how her coming out and doing drag affected her relationship to her family, Dovima letting down her guard, Carmen speaking about her parents, the letter from Hugaceo's brother... It all felt very genuine and important and I love that!

3. Shooketh moment: The judging was fair with maybe two small exceptions. And the judges gave valid constructive critique always followed by immense support and praise. There was no unnecessary bullshit or forcing people to change their signatures. They only asked Vulcano if she will always be on those platforms but it was part of a valid critique and not just the usual of "we've seen your signature now throw it away". In the acting challenge the Javis gave useful critique and advice, even throwing ad lib ideas for the queens in, Supremme tried to give Dovima some ideas when she blanked in the Puppet mini challenge, Ana gave Killer advice about making a better silhouette for herself and as the runways went by you could see Killer was improving, and so on.

That's how you make your contestants feel comfortable and validated. Even Inti who had a somewhat dramatic exit seems to still be very grateful and close to the judges.

The judges were enjoying everything to the maximum. There's so many shots of the Javis and Ana fangirling, all of them hyping up the queens during the lipsyncs, Supremme dancing to the lipsyncs, all of them dying of laughter or crying when things got emotional. They're all so precious!!

And don't even get me started on the guest judges:

Bad Gyal, Paca la Piraña, Alaska, ENVY PERU! Legends!!!

Please invite more winners to the judging panel!!

4. THAT'S HOW YOU ACT AS A HOST!!! Roople take fucking notes. Supremme was so entertaining, loving, kind and supportive. It is so clear she loves both drag in general and the girls so much. Hell, how many times did she cry or almost cry in the span of these 9 episodes? I already said that, but you know damn well Ru would not have handled a situation like the one with Inti with such grace and kindness. He wouldn't even enter the werk room to check on someone if that happened on a season he hosted. Same with Dovima. In a US season they would have made it as if Dovima was ungrateful and a quitter. Here they tried to encourage her to fight and listened to her reasons without shitting on her afterwards.

The final talk with the queens was lovely as well. She didn't try and spit out some spiritual guru bullshit. She let the queens talk and gave advice and support when it was called for. She made it about them and not her.

There was no anger or rudeness or unnecessary harshness towards anyone. Supremme was nothing but kind and supportive to all of them. Her energy and smile are so infectious - a total class act!

5. The rightful winner was chosen. Congratulations Carmen Farala!!!! She also managed to do something everyone is unsuccessfully trying to emulate since Sasha did it with the rose petals - she pulled an unexpected reveal that was relevant and fitting for the song with her wet wig making it impactful. And the fact that she never watched drag race before doing it herself and ended up winning?? That's some proper legend shit. So well deserved!!

And I think a big part of why we ended up with the rightful winner is that DR España didn't adopt the lipsync for the crown format and stuck to the finale format of earlier seasons.

(Small rant and that's just my opinion, nothing more: the lipsync for the crown format invalidates the purpose of the rest of the season as it makes all 4 finalists, who never have the same trajectory and track record, go basically to 0 again. It's circumstantial and not just in the way that someone who happens to be a better lipsyncer with a less fantastic track record will beat someone with a way better performance throughout the show who isn't as good a lipsyncer as them. Sometimes that doesn't even matter and it comes down to song choice. To me, that format makes the rest of the season unnecessary. If it just comes down to the circumstances of lipsyncing, then they might as well just randomly pick 4 queens, shoot just the lipsyncs and call it a day.)

This season entered the holy company of s6, all stars 2 and UK s1 as one of the best seasons of the franchise to ever exist!!

[Did you remember that Heroes of Battle had monsters in it? Did you remember that the book Heroes of Battle even existed? I didn’t either, until I was trawling through my files. The monsters in Heroes of Battle clearly feel like an afterthought; they have no art and minimal abilities or flavor text. The brass steed is one of the more interesting, since it has literary precedent, but it doesn’t even do what the Brass Horse in The Canterbury Tales can do! So I gave it a few more abilities in my version to bring it closer to its roots.]

Brass Steed CR 8 N Construct This fantastic horse is made out of gleaming metal. Its eyes are luminous.

Brass steeds are prized mounts that never tire and can transport their riders hundreds of miles in a day. Each brass steed is usually a custom job built for a wealthy client, so no two are exactly the same. Some may be tailored to look like a realistic horse, with barding and the like, whereas others are in the shape of more fantastical or monstrous creatures. Gemstones are set in its eyes—although rubies are standard, some commissioners may prefer different colors.

A brass steed is a solid combatant, and never panics as a real horse does. They shrug off mundane weapons and most spells, although acid and electricity spells can slow and damage them. Some of my doodles for Session Six of our Call of Cthulhu game!! We finally got back up with that potion-maker from Last Loop and tried to explain EVERYTHING to her, since she’s the one who seemed the most ready to believe us last time (Also, we saw her voluntarily possessed by a spirit at one point, so it seemed like it would be a good starting point to explain some of our problems).

This went.... chaotically, as there are 0 tells for who’s talking and everyone was very insistent on contributing to the conversation. The alive versions of Sammy and Joey mostly stayed out of this mess.

ALSO!! WE’VE PICKED UP SOME NEW INSANITIES! Henry has a mania that compels him to draw/document everything he learns (in case we lose memories or loop again), Sammy still has the mask thing, Joey’s picked up an obsession with symmetry after witnessing his body horrifically transformed by a corruption across half of it, and Sammy, after seeing the Star Pool lurker’s indescribably horrible non-ink-demon form, is filled with a terrified respect for it and has become strangely deferential. I DID NOT EXPECT SAMMY’S SANITY DROPS TO LINE UP SO PERFECTLY FOR CANON PROBLEMS, 

Anyway, have some more out-of-context quotes!! Some of these are just conversation because imagining people trying to hold a conversation with three different voices coming out of “Henry” is my favourite thing now.

[Sammy is played by me, Joey is played by Boo (inkyvendingmachine), Henry is played by Maf (inkcryptid), and Thren (haunted-hijinxer) is our GM!]

[Sammy] *summarising* (So we're gonna run by Josephine and see if she has anything that maybe we should know, uh, based on our current predicament, which has gotten even more complicated than the previous time we talked to her, which hasn't happened yet!)

[Alive!Sammy] Is something wrong? [Henry] No! No, everything's fine. Let's go. [Alive!Joey] ...I don't think anything's been RIGHT for a while...

[Sammy] (Are we, as a, uh, unit -- do we have the mask on?)

[Ghost!Joey] There's... three of us in here? [Ghost!Sammy] Sure, that's a normal thing to say!

[GM] Josephine looks like she is trying to figure out what to say, but she is having... trouble. [Ghost!Joey] Have you ever had someone... hang out with you... during the festival? Like, kind of, possession? [GM] She raises an eyebrow, but nods, and says "Yes, that's part of my duty, as a leader of this religion." [Ghost!Sammy] Fantastic. That seems to be happening to us. [Ghost!Joey] We're not, exactly sure how we managed to get... in the past again... but we're -- *points with Henry's non-sketching hand over at the live ones* [Joey] Live!Joey just confusedly shrugs and sips his coffee. [GM] "...Uh, go back a minute."

[GM] "And you don't know how this happened?" [ghost!Joey] Not exactly? I -- [Henry] Sammy fell into a Star Pool, and Joey got killed, or, was a host for the cultists. [ghost!Joey] I don't know if I got killed, but, [Henry] Well, you looked goopy. [ghost!Sammy] I don't know what was going on with me, either; I still seemed to be running around. [Henry] Also very goopy.

[ghost!Joey] So, that's a confusing answer! Um. Let's pretend *points at alive!Joey* that he didn't listen to you, and he went up to the Star Pools anyway, without the potion, and then something happened up there that resulted in whatever is happening to us now, which included us losing our memories and waking up later as the same... entity, but we didn't know for a while, and.... uh... it looks like the last time we saw our bodies that weren't alive and human still, they looked... corrupted by the Star Pools. [ghost!Joey] Do you know what might've happened to cause all that? [GM] "...I think there's a lot to unpack there," she says.

[GM] And, indeed, one of them has turned up a pair of gloves! It's somewhat worn, but they don't have holes or anything. Though they might not match your ensemble. [Joey] As long as they match each other, that's fine! [GM] They do that. [Sammy] (I mean, Henry has-- not to rag on Henry's fashion sense, as a man who's worn nothing but the same shirt and suspenders for twenty years, but Henry doesn't have much of an ensemble going on, really.)

[chatting while Joey's player steps away for a moment] [Sammy] Sorry for making you guys deal with Alive!Sammy; Ghost!Sammy genuinely doesn't know how to argue for this. [Sammy] It's like, yeah I dunno! Sounds like a raw deal! [Henry] Henry also doesn't know how to argue for this, it's like, Hey! Do you want a whole bunch of awful, horrible, terrible memories? ....No? Oh. [Sammy] CANT IMAGINE WHY!! [Sammy] Like, please? I'd like my body back? ...it's your body, we'd be sharing it-- but not like this situation, uh, [Henry] Just please, take... I have... take Sammy back. [Sammy] Could you take this off of my hands, I'm really tired of dealing with it, [Henry] I love 'im. But I need a break. Please come take your lost.... self. [GM] Your wayward self. [Henry] Who's this sassy lost child. [Joey] *re-entering chat* Ah, we're talking about Sammy. [Sammy] OH MY GOSH.

[Henry] I ROLLED A ONE HUNDRED! [Sammy] Henry is VERY tired and distracted. [GM] Henry's sketching again. He was left unattended for a bit and he's sketching again. [Henry] Yup, [Sammy] *sputters* HE CAN'T BE LEFT UNATTENDED, WE'RE BOTH HERE [Joey] HE LITERALLY CAN'T!! [Sammy] THAT'S THE WHOLE PROBLEM!! SAMMY WOULD LOVE TO LEAVE HENRY UNATTENDED!!!

[Sammy] Is the voice familiar? [Joey]  Is it the Lurker's? [GM] A bit...? [Henry] A bit familiar or a bit like the Lurker's? [GM] ...Yes.

[ghost!Sammy] Joey, what do you think it was? [ghost!Joey] I think it has something to do with our situation, and perhaps the fact that-- [ghost!Sammy] "OUR SITUATION" doesn't really clear anything up, that could be a LOT of things right now!

[Sammy] Sammy doesn't want to be back in the actual time we belong in! He's dead in that one!

[Sammy]  I guess it's also Alive!Sammy's turn. I don't, uh, [Sammy]  ...there's too many Sammys, [Joey] (Alive!Sammy just goes WHAT THE FUCK) [Sammy]  Yeah, I don't think he's prepared, when he turns the corner, to find cultists with swords, and Henry immediately drawing a gun and screaming at them; I don't think he's prepared for any of this, or has a game plan for what to do in case this happens, other than just, yelling, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” [GM] at Henry, or the cultists? [Sammy]  ....BOTH????

[Joey] Does Joey know of any way to interrupt magic? [GM] Injuring someone is a good, classic way to do that.

[GM] So, you can do an attack, whether it's with the gun or with your fists! [Sammy] *flipping through character sheet* I mean, I feel like I'm probably not just shooting him, I-- wHEN DID YOU ADD "DUSTPAN" TO MY WEAPONS???

[Sammy] The idea of Joey just continuously accidentally killing people is REALLY funny to me.

[Sammy] This is going MUCH better than the last time that we fought anybody! [Joey] Apparently Joey just needs to be really angry, and then my dice are like, “yeah, you can kill people.”

[GM] *flipping through the rules* Here we go, "Disrupted spellcasting, for example, if they are shot!" Well, okay then-- [GM] ......ohhh. [Sammy]  Uh, [Henry] "Oh?" [GM] HM! ........ let me get a d8. [Henry] Concern...???? [Sammy]  It's probably fine. It's... it's probably fine. [GM] ........ [GM] Uh..... huh. Well. That's an 8. [Sammy]  On the d8. [GM] Yyyeah,..... you disrupted his, casting,,, it's not a serious spell so most of this stuff is not extreme, but I rolled an 8, and that says, [GM] "A mythos monster is accidentally summoned." [Sammy]  WHAT?? [Henry] WHAT??? [Sammy] WHAT???? [Joey] *dying of laughter in the background* [Sammy]  I DIDN'T KNOW THAT WAS AN OPTION??? OKAY!!! [GM] I didn't think it was, at this level of spell!! [Sammy]  Remember when I said that this was going well? I NEED TO STOP SAYING THINGS.

[Joey] How is Sammy putting on the mask? [Sammy] With his.... hands...? [Joey] No, like, how is it laying on his head, [Sammy] OH.

[Joey] Ghost!Joey would like to turn it so it's like, in the middle of his head. But like, on forehead, so that they can still see. [Henry]  (A fancy visor!) [Sammy] (...you can still see if it’s on the side...) [Joey] (Joey would really like it if we, put it in the middle.) [Sammy] (...I FORGOT YOU HAVE A SYMMETRY THING)

[GM] You felt, when Sammy and the cult leader were both giving the Lurker commands, that there was a kind of tug-of-war going on there, and it seems like the cult leader won that round. [Henry]  Wait, we can give the Lurker commands? [Joey] We're allies. [Sammy] Yeah, we're the host. [Henry]  Oh, um, [Sammy] Sammy asked it for help! It didn't, uh... this is how things always go for Sammy, so, I feel like this is correct.

[Sammy] (...Henry pulls out a gun, someone tries to grab him and he just bashes that person over the head, Joey tries to help by shooting this cult leader to stop him from casting a spell, and this horrible weird bendy monster is unleashed, Henry IMMEDIATELY kneels to this creature, and it starts listening to him, and he grabs the amulet and starts directing it to murder people after pulling the mask down over his face, so, yeah!! I can see that being pRETTY UNSETTLING actually!!)

[Joey] And I've already accidentally summoned a demon, somehow! [GM] This is just how Joey rolls, he just aCCIDENTALLY SUMMONS DEMONS, apparently! Even when OTHER PEOPLE are casting spells, Joey finds a way to accidentally summon a demon!

[Sammy] We do need those; those ARE our bodies running away,

[Lurker, when asked if he can shapeshift] It depends on the host! I didn't do this. It's pretty awesome, though! I feel like this is actually something that was designed to be this way, for the first time I can remember! Deliberate, you know what I mean? [Henry] “Yeah!” Henry says, not knowing what he means.

[Sammy] We're very focused on getting out of here. [Henry] We're channeling Wally Franks! [Sammy] NO! Don't channel Wally Franks! He didn't get outta there he just YELLED ABOUT IT, which is what WE'RE DOING RIGHT NOW!! LET'S ACTUALLY GET OUTTA HERE!

[GM] You guys go around a corner that at least obscures you from immediate sight, though it's good the Lurker is as, uh...... [GM] ........ [GM] ........ [GM] ...uh, for lack of a better word, bendy as he is, [players explode with laughter] [GM] I TRIED, I couldn't think of anything else! [Sammy] NO I SAW THE GEARS TURNING IN YOUR HEAD

[GM] You have a small Bendy. [GM] He's blinking. [Henry] Henry is.... is having, a moment,

[Sammy] We're honoured you're joining us, but we really should get moving?

[Henry] Just let him ride on his shoulders like a kid, that'd be adorable! [Henry] Henry's having SO many emotions right now. He wants to be respectful, but also, oh my god, that's so cute?? and also my OC???? Oh my god??????

[GM] I don't think the Lurker is familiar with the concept of piggyback rides. I mean if he's asked I'm sure he's down for whatever, but, [Henry] Henry's gonna ask the Lurker if he wants to climb on his shoulders and ride. [GM] The Lurker thinks this is a FANTASTIC idea, because nobody has ever carried the Lurker around before!

[Alive!Sammy] Sammy's very pale. [Alive!Joey] You have a... Bendy now, Henry...? [Henry] Uh, kinda! This is the Lurker. [Alive!Joey] “The Lurker”? [Henry] The giant monster? He's... small now, so he's not a giant monster.

[Alive!Sammy] Henry WHAT is going on? Or, whoever you are right now, [Henry] It is me; look, I've been letting the others talk because I have no idea what's going on. I don't know... I just want to get everyone out of here alive. [GM] (What a Henry thing to say) [Alive!Sammy] *snarking* Well, we're alive SO far! Maybe don't run at people with swords, in the future? Might help with that. [Henry] That was Sammy. That wasn't me. [Joey] (*laughing* "By the way, that thing you were lecturing me about? That wasn't me, THAT WAS YOU!")

[GM] The Lurker settles down when it is clear that the hug is not a threat.

[Henry] (I AM LOSING IT! I hope you know what you've done to me!) [GM] (I was not expecting this either but here we are!!) [Henry] (Maybe it was my idea. I can't believe I've done this.)

[Joey] Alive!Joey at some point shows Bendy how to hold the pencil. [GM] He says "Oh, hey, neat!" and has an easier time. [Henry] Oh my god, cute? [Sammy] (*losing it in the background*) [Joey] I was just thinking that if he's sitting next to Henry, and he watches the Lurker fumble with the pencil enough, he's going to just, reach up and-- [Sammy] (I LOST NINE SANITY TO THIS ASSHOLE!!!) [Henry] (But he's so cute!) [Joey] (Well now he's cute, maybe you get some sanity back!) [Henry] (Like petting a cat! You get sanity back from petting the Bendy.) [Sammy] (Yes, he is adorable, I will serve him faithfully.)

[GM] Make a navigate check. [Joey] *rolls terribly* Joey doesn't know where the fuck we're going. [Henry] I missed the navigate check too. [Sammy] Ohhhh boy, we better not get lost... [Joey] Sammy, do you remember where we're going? [Sammy] Oh, don't ask Sammy. Don't ask either Sammy. [Sammy] Alive!Sammy will eventually ask "You DO know where we're going, right?" [GM] What a useful pocket demon. [Henry] I love our pocket demon. [Joey] I love our son... [Sammy] Joey, [Joey] Firstborn... [Henry] Adopted from a cult! [Joey] We went to Haiti and adopted a son. [Sammy] Sammy's role as third wheel here is getting weirder and weirder.

[Sammy] I can't believe Binoculars is a Bendy fan.

[Joey] (Meanwhile, Ghost!Joey remembers something? There is an inscription on the floor between the laundry room, and Josephine's room, that does not allow the passage of evil spirits. I... don't think the Lurker is going to make it past that.) [Henry] (Ohhhhhhhhh) [Sammy] (Hmm. Also... BRINGING THE LURKER in to see Josephine feels, hostile???) [Henry] (OH... I didn't think about that; he's just my kid now!)

[Joey] (I have literally no idea for Joey.) [Sammy] (Gosh, what a thing to ask... I just have to appreciate, what a thing to ask a Type Three -- "Okay, what's YOU?") [Joey] (Joey looks down at the mask, feeling all of his inner masks,,,) [Sammy] ("I'M COMPOSED OF THINGS THAT MAKE OTHER PEOPLE THINK IM SUCCESSFUL,,,")

[Ghost!Sammy] After you. [Ghost!Joey] Actually, I would feel more comfortable if you went first, [Ghost!Sammy] ...Fine. Fantastic. [Joey] (This is-- I don't know if Sammy can feel it, but this is definitely out of, still thinking about the slight guilt that ran through him when Sammy was blaming EVERYTHING on him, and telling him to keep them out of this,) [Sammy] (I mean, Sammy just thinks this is risky and wanted Joey to be the guinea pig, so, that's nice that you were thinking of him!)

[Sammy] A quick kiss won't be enough time for Sammy to like, stop bluescreening in time to react to this? So, um, uh, he- he just, uh, needs, uh, a- a minute, but he, will be, blushing furiously. I think that's the only reaction! [Joey] Perfect~ [GM] The spirit lady probably flashes him a thumbs up. [Joey] *laughing* Sammy DIES. We did all of this to get him alive again, and he just DIES. extracts from a Berlin travel guide i worked on during my first internship. i was spellbound by Berlin’s entrancing mix of rich culture & gritty club-scene. i fell in love with the city, bit by bit, and i spent one month reviewing its art, museums and vegan food. during my time there, David Bowie kept ringing in my ears, as it was one of his soul-cities 🌼 you got the width of my tongue name on the sun 🌷 velvet goldmine, you stroke me like the rain, snake it, take it, panther princess you must stay 🦋

Feature: Introduction to Berlin

Much has been written about Berlin’s blend of history, outstanding culture and infamous nightlife. Proclaimed the capital of cool, Berlin is where you can “go to all-night parties, attend a screening of an arthouse film and an anti-Trump demonstration within 24 hours”, as The Times noted. Some talk about Berlin’s fall from grace, wondering if the city’s growing popularity diminished its authenticity and turned the city into a growingly expensive tourist trap.

From Marlene Dietrich, who sang “I still keep a suitcase in Berlin” with a piercing longing, to the rebellious singer Iggy Pop, who called Berlin his home, many artists have voiced their love for Berlin.

Affordable, buzzing, wild and carefree, Berlin is a symbol for tolerance and open-mindedness. Unlike other metropolises in Europe, it’s a place where you can relax. Berliners do not rush. They take their time, basking in the sun with their low-cut T-shirts and heavily tattooed arms, flicking back their occasionally bright-coloured hair.

Nights in Berlin are freaky, intense and fiery. The club culture is exhilarating; anything goes. Berlin is a techno capital: notorious DJs, outrageous raves and 36-hour long parties. There are plenty of clubs to choose from, perhaps the most infamous being Berghain, which pays the same taxes as theatres and concert halls, as it is considered to produce work of cultural significance.

It’s magical to lose yourself in Berlin’s night scene, in the hazy beat of electronic music and in the half-clothed masses. There is a strong sense of acceptance. You are free to be yourself. You won’t be judged.

There are around 20,000 artists living and working in the city, lured by cheap rents, the city’s libertine energy and the massive studio spaces. The street art mirrors the city’s fantastic art scene.

Berlin is bursting with culture and history. It has 175 museums, even more than New York. It’s an open museum too: from the Berlin Wall to Checkpoint Charlie and to the Nazi book burning site at Babelplatz, Berlin’s unique history can be seen by foot.

Berlin is the cheapest capital city in Western Europe. While it is getting expensive, perhaps because of its touristy appeal, it is the perfect place for backpackers, artists and adventurers for now. You can get a cup of coffee for €2, a lunch for less than €10, a pint of beer for €2-4, a day travel pass for €6,50 and a decent double room in a hotel for €50 per night. What is more, some of the attractions of Berlin are free, such as East Side Gallery, Raw Tempel and Yaam Beach.

Beyond Compare: How African and European Sculptures Carve the Essence of Humanity

There are few exhibitions as fascinating as Bode Museum’s “Beyond Compare”. “Beyond Compare” brings together, compares and analyses the sculptural traditions of two continents by displaying, side by side, 70 African sculptures, along with renowned masterpieces from Byzantium, Italy and central Europe.

Despite their radical stylistic differences, it is interesting to observe how the artworks touch the same themes. They illustrate the frailty of the human experience, exploring subjects such as death, beauty, motherhood, power, spirituality and love. Cultures apart, humans seemed to be moved by the same matters; it is remarkable to see the dainty, gothic sculpture of Madonna, Virgin of Mercy, appear next to a seemingly raw sculpture which represents a power figure from Congo. The second sculpture looks quite crude next to the carefully-carved Madonna, but both were made with the intent to ask for protection, to invoke forces that are beyond the physical world.

In the exhibition’s first slide, it is noted that the works displayed were made by human beings, and not by “cultures”, “tribes”, “ethnic groups” or “nations”. It is important to keep this in mind while strolling through the museum, as this exhibition is not an objective comparison between two different cultures, but a soft reflection of human nature.

Enjoy the silence in Museum der Stille

Museum der Stille (“Museum of Silence”) is a unique invitation to embrace the silence in the middle of the lively district of Berlin Mitte. It’s a small, free and beautiful exhibition of paintings and architectural models that illustrate different stages of stillness. It is lovely, subtle and, above all, silent. In the middle of the museum, there is only one piercing painting of a woman who’s gazing through you, with a simple wooden bench in front it. The walls are a deep, warm red and the light is dimmed. The profound silence makes the experience sincere and intense; you are struck by a strong feeling of here and now. While at the beginning you might be put off by the awkwardness of hearing your feet clumsily shuffling through the museum, you will gently ease into the museum’s serenity, if you let yourself. For once, you do not have to rush. It’s enough just to take it all in.

Even after leaving the museum and walking back into broad daylight, the spell of silence is not broken. You might be finding yourself humming Depeche Mode and thinking that they were right, perhaps. It is enough just to enjoy the silence.

CWC Gallery: exploring the modern and the contemporary

If you have a soft spot for art, but find most museums to be too sombre and a little old-fashioned, CWC Gallery might just be the place for you. “CWC” stands for “Camera Work Contemporary” and, as its name suggests, it focuses on contemporary and slightly modern positions found in photography, painting and sculpture. The gallery is in the heart of the bohemian Berlin-Mitte quarter and, while stylish and elegant, it isn’t pretentious and it has an easy-going vibe. It’s also completely free!

The first floor is a homage to the 1990s that recreates the dreamy allure of the era. Wandering around, you are charmed by goddesses of the ‘90s: photos of the iconic Iman, Gisele Bündchen, Uma Thurman and Halle Berry, all captured by Micheal Comte, are plastered on walls. Their half-smile and bouncy curls will leave you longing. You can soothe your temporary nostalgia by moving onto the next floors, where you can admire a beautifully curated and impressive exhibition of modern works of art, some of which display a striking social commentary.

In the same building, you can also find quite an interesting permanent exhibition about The Kennedys, which explores the political success and the private life of John F. Kennedy. The admission fee is 5€.

Yoyo FoodWorld: the oldest vegan fast-food joint in Berlin

Yoyo FoodWorld is a hip fast-food joint on the Gärtnerstrasse 27 and the first and oldest vegan fast-food in Berlin.

For almost ten years, Yoyo hasn’t been your typical fast-food. Its atmosphere is similar to one of a quiet, cozy indie bar. Indoors, the light is slightly dimmed and there are photos of famous musicians and philosophers plastered on the restaurant’s walls, along with cult film posters that would make any film student swoon. Soft rock music plays in the background. The outdoor sitting is just as delightful, as the area surrounding the joint is lovely and inviting.

The food is cheap, fantastic and sure to satisfy your cravings, as the options are varied. They have 3,50€ burgers, 6,50€ pizza, 5€ wraps, 6€ schnitzels, 5€ seitan Currywursts, 3,80€ sea food and meatballs at the price of 8 for 3,20€. All the dishes are deliciously vegan and would work perfectly as comfort food or hangover food. It’s also the place to take your friends to convince them that vegan food is tasty.

Another highlight is the toilet, which is exceptionally cool. It’s filled with queer stickers, feminist and political statements, colourful graffiti and carefully scribbled love poems; ideal for a quirky Instagram post.

Get fettundbetrunken at the Chaostheorie

Chaostheorie is the first vegan cocktail bar in Germany. Their slogan is “fettundbetrunken”: “fat and drunk”, so expect to find a perfect mix of cheap comfort food and funky alcohol.

Onto the first part of their motto, “fat”: the food is fantastic. From a veganized traditional cuisine to more modern dishes, the highlights are juicy currywursts, enormous doner kebabs, fries with dripping dips, pulled mushroom burgers and thick cheese meatball sandwiches. To sweeten things up, the selection of house-made cakes is flavourful to say the least. The Oreo cake, smooth and crunchy at the same time, is a popular favourite. The soft drinks are also a dream: creamy milkshakes, Snickers, Manner or Oreo flavored, and rich freakshakes. You can settle for classic options, too: late macchiato, hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows, coffee with caramelized milk and hot applesauce with cinnamon and vanilla soya milk.

Challenge yourself at the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art

The Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art is a remarkable contemporary art institution located in the Berlin’s picturesque district Mitte. The building is a sight itself and it has a sophisticated allure, tall and elegant. The outdoor café has a lovely Parisian appeal and it’s where the hip tattooed artists you might have seen on Tumblr sip their coffees in the afternoon.

The works of art exhibited in the Institute are complex. You can marvel at political activist art, video art, visual art or interactive art. They’re also controversial, with people either excitedly praising them or dismissing them as meaningless. The exhibitions are divided into rooms: in some rooms you might be deafened by booming nature sounds, while in others you might be asked to take off your shoes and wander into an empty, soundproof room, where you’d be faced with a gut-wrenching documentary about the condition of the modern black artist. However, you never know what to expect, as the exhibits change constantly. Nonetheless, the works of emerging young artists are unique and do not hold the reassurance of traditional art: they challenge you and shake you. They draw out a strong response, be it positive or negative.

Finally, even if you occasionally roll your eyes at modern art, you should give the KW Institute a chance. At least one of the works of art displayed might move you.

Be Here, Be Queer at the Schwules Museum

The Schwules Museum is the world’s first gay museum, originally opened in 1985. It exhibits the violent history and the injustices the LGBTQ community endured in the past, as well as Berlin’s current queer life.

Schwules is not your typical queer museum. If you expect it to be bustling with colour and rainbows, you might be taken aback. To an extent, it is exceptionally colourful, with cheeky illustrations of young gay couples kissing, soft porn photos and neon slogans about love. But a more serious tone is predominant. The permanent exhibitions also depict gay history milestones, such as the feminist revolution, the composition of the first feminist songs of the German movement or the protests of a working group of lesbian teachers. In the middle of the museum, there’s a memorial dedicated to the LGBT people who were killed in concentration camps. Their names are written in blood-red. You will also shudder upon entering the museum, where you can see a lengthy list of countries where homosexuality is currently considered a punishable crime.

It is important to go to the Schwules Museum because you will be reminded of how painful history is and how the free world we live in required sacrifices. And how, for some, the world still isn’t free.

It is not allowed to take pictures, which at first might be quite annoying, as your initial impulse might be to want to immortalize everything. However, this might help you take in all the information and carefully weigh what you’re seeing.

Finally, is important to go to the Schwules Museum because you will be reminded of how painful history is and how the free world we live in required sacrifices. And how, for some, the world still isn’t free.

Sun and wholesome food at The Bowl

The Bowl, self-proclaimed a “clean-eating restaurant”, is the perfect place for a cozy lunch with your friends or for a breakfast date with a book. They only use fresh, seasonal, healthy and gluten-free products. Everything is fully sustainable and vegan. They even use natural sugar! And, truthfully, the food is indeed full of flavour and it leaves you with a sense of freshness. They have a great variety of bowls: from rich breakfast bowls filled with sweet fruit, raw chocolate and creamy soy yoghurt to lavish plates with roasted vegetables, mashed avocado raw crackers, zucchini and smoked paprika.

The desserts are a treat, as well. The highlights are the lush vanilla almond cake, with coconut blossom sugar, raw chocolate and coconut strawberry and bananenbrot, with grilled banana, granola, warm strawberry sauce and raw chocolate.

While it is a bit pricey, 6,50 € for breakfast bowls and around 10 € for the lunch specials, the naturalness of the food, its filling base and vitamin-rich toppings make it all worth it.

The dishes are perfectly Instagrammable and the colourful variety of vegetables and legumes doesn’t even need a filter. While enjoying your wholesome food, you can bask in the sun in front of the large windows and observe the buzzing Warschauer Straße, with hazy, synth-pop music unfolding in the background.

What is more, on the ground floor of the same building where Bowl is, you can find Veganz, a plant-based supermarket with an impressively wide range of products, from cheese and ham slices to cashew cookies, ice cream and the finest chocolate cream.

In Hero Reform (and in one of your lovely replies to me), it's mentioned that Viktor wore a very revealing hero costume as a teen, which Yakov and Lilia allowed him to do once he threw a tantrum, because they wanted him to feel better .

In your very kind (and funny!) reply to the horror movie ask, it's mentioned that it didn't even occur to Lilia that Yuri P could find the horror movie scary.

This is fantastic. So, I have absolutely no idea why I made Yakov, Lilia AND Celestino Victor and YP's parents. It was just an unexplainable knee jerk reaction when I was first writing this and it's admittedly a bit silly but idc. Also, as time went on, it just made more sense in my mind for their characters. It was just easier for three out of depth, overworked adults to raise 2 kids than it was for one to do it by themselves.

Yakov was not always the parental figure that he is now, someone who is firm, but mostly fair, loving, and very protective. He originally tried to raise Victor and Yuri P. the way he taught heroes: with a firm fist and no mercy. He was far too emotionally distant for a father, unwilling to accept when the boys made mistakes, and valued discipline over everything else. But, of course, Victor and Yuri did not respond too well to being held under a thumb, headstrong as they are. Many many tantrums (Yuri's), fights, and slammed doors helped Yakov to learn that he needed to take a slightly more gentle approach.

Old Yakov: This is the second time this week that I've caught you sneaking out. That means you will spend two months in this room and you've got dish duty until I say so.

Lil' Victor: But—

Old Yakov: This isn't a discussion.

Lil' Victor at nobody because Yakov has left: YOU NEVER LISTEN TO ME!

After the terror that is Yuri P. entered their lives, Yakov quickly learned that some changes needed to be made...

New Yakov: Now, why am I watching you climb through a bedroom window right now, Yura?

Slightly smaller Yuri: .... the front door was locked.

New Yakov: Naturally. And what were you doing at this hour?

SS Yuri: Nothing... I just wanted to see Mila.

New Yakov: Unless Mila is a vampire, I'm positive she'll be more than happy to see you during the day, and if not, she's welcome to have dinner with us anytime.

SS Yuri: ...Really??

New Yakov: Certainly. That is of course after your punishment has lifted which will be two months from now. You're taking Victor's dish duty starting tomorrow. We'll continue this discussion in the morning. Good night.

SS Yuri: But—

Lilia is quite similar to Yakov when it comes to parenting but her thing is that she has a very skewed perspective about what she finds to be upsetting or triggering. So, while Yakov was unfazed by tears, Lilia was positively baffled.

Old Lilia: There will be no dessert until all of your toys have been properly put away, and that's final.

Teeniest Yuri: ｡･ﾟヾ(✦థ ｪ థ)ﾉ｡ﾟ･｡

Old Lilia: W-w-what? What's happened?? Are you hurt? Why are you crying?????

Celestino, who is somehow more "normal" than Yakov and Lilia really helps out in situations like this so that Lilia can learn and adjust:

Lilia 2.0: Your dessert is waiting for you, Yura. We'll eat together when you've finished putting all of your toys away.

Teeniest Yuri who knows he's not gonna starve: °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°

For Celestino, trying to parent with Yakov and Lilia is like Chris Pratt trying to subdue those dinos. Yakov is very militaristic, disciplined, and emotionally distant by nature. Lilia is the same, possibly more so as she was trained at the Guild of Champions. They're both not great at dealing with emotions: Yakov doesn't pick up on when people have them and Lilia doesn't realize that pain, death, mortal danger, and significant life events aren't the only reasons why someone may feel strong emotions. When Yakov does realize that someone is having BIG feelings, he sometimes just... ignores them/doesn't acknowledge them at all... something that he still struggles with but is better at now than before.

But Celestino is just a guy who has great abilities and trained those abilities at the Grand Prix like most heroes. He understands people. He understands when someone is hurt or when there is more to their feelings than what they express through words. So, like a normal compassionate/empathetic person. Celestino started at 0 (maybe 3 or 4) when he became a parent while Yakov and Lilia started at negative 10.

Celestino: Oooh, all dressed up? Where are you guys going?

Lilia: I'm taking the kids to see Naomi.

Celestino: ... giant mutant lizard owner Naomi or pastry chef Naomi?

Lilia: The former.

Celestino: Ok, perhaps don't????

Lilia, huffing agitatedly: Fine. But it's the pastry chef that has the license to kill.

It was also Celestino that reluctantly took Victor's side when he threw a tantrum over his super suit. Lilia and Yakov's argument was that a hero suit was a uniform, a mark of power and trustworthiness that should stand out in a crowd. And not stand out like that as a teenager in the fishbowl that is the world of super heroes. Celestino agrees with this but.... there are exceptions.

Celestino reasoned that a lot of Victor's choices were taken away from him as a kid and that he didn't have the chance to explore and grow the way normal kids did. Victor experienced a lot of trauma and he wanted to take control of his life again. He wanted to feel happy, confident, and strong again. If that meant Victor had to wear a slightly risque super suit... then so be it??? It wasn't too bad after all. And Victor was a good kid, a hero, and his taste in fashion changed like the wind. He'd want a new super suit by the end of the winter anyway. Teen Victor rarely threw huge tantrums. He may have shouted back out of anger, whined a bit, or tried to plead with puppy dog eyes, but he rarely ever went off on a screaming, tearful tirade. That was Yuri P.'s thing. So when Victor snapped, Celestino knew that this was a big deal to him.

Somehow the three manage to balance each other out. And the boys know that they are well loved even if 2/3 of their parents have a funny way of showing it.

Adam from The Hollow is flawed: And Why it's important.

Long post with obvious The Hollow: Netflix spoilers but I just have to say it.

Adam coming out as gay in Season 2 was so important. But honestly what I personally think was more important was how he was portrayed. I love the fact that Adam was openly out and proud as a gay teenager. However it's just as important that he was portrayed as a normal character regardless of his sexuality.

Don't get me wrong, S2 has proven that despite his leadership skills and his abilities. Adam is a very flawed character.

Although he's a natural leader and will step up to the plate at any opportunity (not a flaw btw) he's combative at detractors. Meaning he does have insecurities of his abilities.

A HUGE narrative of S2 is his rivalry with Reeve. It's revealed Him, Reeve, and Mira were all part of the same Hollow Game team but Adam and Reeve butted heads constantly and forced Mira to figure out all of the puzzles. Eventually breaking apart not only the team, but also their friendship.

To add on top of that. It's a HUGE detriment to both teams when they initially are back together. The two almost enjoy hurling insults and bickering at each other. Much to the detriment of the team. The two getting to physical fights at it's worst.

Going back to the team dynamics. Although he's grown to being much friendlier towards Kai. Back in Season 1 the two clearly had their tensions. And when Adam admits his annoyance towards Kai at the beginning of S2. He does so in an admittably harsh way. He does apologize but still a cuts a cut.

His biggest fears and insecurities are his childhood bullies. It seemed fun and almost kind of ridiculous that Adam, essentially a superhuman in-game and a 'confident' leader. Is paralyzed in fear by his childhood bullies. However I think that spells out more of his character than anything we got up to this point. Adam hadn't explicitly said he was gay yet and it's all left to inference but I think Adam's biggest fear is rejection and being shunned. It manifested as his childhood bullies because even though we have the cocky, handsome, strong Adam now. Adam was that gay kid who was bullied for being weird and different.

Speaking to his cockiness, this season plays up the fact that he's aware of his appearance. After Mira apologizes for kissing him in the game even though she knew outside of the game that he was out of the closet. He touts himself by pulling off this pose and saying "who could resist me?"

What I'm trying to get at here is that TH S2 did an excellent job of portraying not only a main character, but an LGBT+ main character. I've seen a handful of people complaining that The Hollow Queerbaited by not making Adam "gay enough" because we get the flag in his room, he mentions that he's gay, and then it's done. I think that argument has 0 grounds because the show not only symbolically showed but also explicitly stated that Adam identifies as gay.

The Hollow also showed that Adam is a fantastic character because yes he is gay. But he's not what we stereotype as gay. Adam is a normal 16 year old. He's flawed in that he's insecure, combative, and certainly a bit cocky. However he's genuinely a good person, and one who is a good leader to boot. As a gay man it's liberating to see men who are open and honest about their sexuality in media. However, it's too often that we are lampooned by pop culture into being that foppish archetype of being the feminine gay (nothing wrong at all with being Fem. All gender presentations or lack thereof are valid). Or we are characterized by being the comic relief villain. It's so refreshing to see a gay male lead who is just a normal person. There are LGBT+ individuals of every type of fashion sense, gender portrayal, or characterization. The gay man who likes to watch Football and Hockey and drink beer isn't any less gay than the gay man who lives in a big city does what we have stereotyped as gay coded.

Adam being a flawed gay character, especially in a kids show is very important. It teaches LGBT kids that on top of it being possible for us to be heroes and the lead role, we are also human and it's okay to have flaws. It's okay to be LGBT+ and not have to enjoy or live up to what society deems that we must. So let's give it up to a funky superb little ninja badass Adam.
