my brother just. sprayed lotion at my clothes and for a split second i felt. tears. i am so sensitive to everything, i press gently on these spindly legs and they ache with bruises caused by misfortunes. the ways of the world make my head spin until the contents of my mind come spilling through each facial orifice, and i make a fool of myself once again. perhaps i will distance myself from everything, everyone these colder months, to speak to myself, although what of loneliness? i become so desperate once the sun leaves us, so desperate to be understood, though this façade of complicated words cannot be held forever. (it is not a façade? an integral part of the self that complicates feelings?) i will miss each lovely soul here. never thought i'd see people try to argue or analyse wriothesley's murder in regards to his personality. i think people are missing the point. the situation has nothing to do with him and has everything to do with an extremely traumatic environment that made a small boy think the only solution so save himself and the people he cared about was to take the life of his abusers. it's not supposed to be rational, it wasn't premeditated, it wasn't about getting away with it. if you read his description of the murder you can see how out of it he was. his goal was to protect himself and his siblings and that's what he did. that's why he admitted to the crime so easily and why he is keen to associate the fortress as a rebirth place. he was just young, lost and traumatised and that's about it when it comes to the extension of it all.

Oh, where would I even begin... of course, his twin has likely seen more of what he's eaten over the years than I have, but among the top ones I've seen have been shoes, parts of his jacket when he's absent-minded, (eugh...), occasional muffin wrappers, even MOSS at one point.

Although the moss is probably more likely to be considered 'edible' by our standards, it was still just growing on a wall that he discreetly grabbed... he tries to act all proper and well-mannered, but my dear elder does have his... moments.

i think a huge problem with the whole “fanfic doesn’t need to alone with your own moral code” argument is that people are using if to defend things like racism. and that i don’t get. sure everyone has different morals but hurting marginalized groups especially if you don’t belong to that group is objectively wrong. i think it goes past just morality

hey! i think i understand where you're coming from, and i talk in this post about my view on the best course of action if you are concerned that a fic is genuinely perpetuating harmful stereotypes or rhetoric. it is very late at night for me so i don't have time to write another entire essay, but just one thing i want to say before i lose the thought.

i tried to make it as clear as possible in my post that i think good art is a conversation. this means good art will sometimes engage with difficult topics in a way that may make you uncomfortable, and as long as it's properly tagged, it is up to you whether or not you read it. do i think people should put effort into researching and sensitively portraying topics that they have no personal experience with? absolutely. but because fanfiction is a hobby and is often not thoroughly edited and whatnot, people are inevitably going to fuck up. i think, because fanfiction is meant to be a community, it's important to go into it giving each other the benefit of the doubt and assuming that people are trying their best. for me, when i come across something that i find offensive or inaccurate, i typically assume the person is uneducated or has some internalized biases they need to work through, and not that they are actively trying to perpetuate harm.

however. that being said. what you're referring to is racism. with everything i just said in mind, i'm going to assume we are on the same page about what racism is here--which means actively feeding into a harmful stereotype or rhetoric, rather than just discussing racism within the context of the story in a way that may be triggering for some people on a personal level, but is properly tagged and warned so that each reader can make the best decision for themselves about whether they are in the right headspace to engage with heavy material (does that make sense? hopefully i am explaining that difference correctly.)

if we're talking about racism, in that context, then that falls outside the bounds of what i said in my previous post about morality and art. that is because racism, by definition, is doing the thing that i said bad art does--it is presenting a set of moral guidelines and telling you to accept them as truth. it is not a conversation; it is not inviting critical thought; it is pushing the narrative of white supremacy and expecting you to agree with it. racist art is bad art. full stop. and it is bad art because it is not a conversation, it is a fucked-up set of moral guidelines.

for me, personally, when i am evaluating like....the morality of a piece of media, what i come back to is the question of conversation. i am wary of any art that tries to sell me a narrative as absolute truth and expects me to swallow it. but i am open to engaging with topics that make me uncomfortable, as long as they are presenting those topics in a way that is clearly meant to make me think critically and ask questions and draw my own conclusions. when i say fanfic doesn't have to align with your moral code, i mean that i think it is okay and even healthy sometimes to read about characters who do and say and act in ways that are shitty, but that give us something to think critically about and reflect difficult realities in our own lives. i do not mean that fanfic should be like....imposing a shitty moral code on you, because i don't think any art should be doing that. but there is a difference between those two things, y’know? and it's important to learn how to suss out that difference and recognize it when we engage with any form of media.

Morrowind moments I desperately want to hyperanalyze but feel like I don’t have the language to do so: When the Nerevarine asks Vivec if they remember being mortal, and they say “For me — there is no more feeling. Only knowing.” And then a literal written [Pause] before Vivec says they do want to win though, not for their people, but because “To lose would be very, very bitter.” And how those two paragraphs alone shaped Vivec’s character for me more than anything else they said or did during that confrontation, as I felt it was one of the few moments we saw Vivec being completely, brutally, honest.

Vivec on the other hand carries themself as only incredibly honest and truthful - #- even going so far as to claim they eradicated the idea of the contradiction in their sermons. but Vivec just IS a contradiction.- #-their godhood (and the godhood of the other tribunal) is built on the foundation of a lie that they desperately tried to suppress as- #-they grew weaker in power. they claim to be honest but lie to your face. in their most honest rendition of the events of red mountain they- #-don’t even MENTION nerevar’s passing (the written account taken from their library). it’s just implied that Nerevar died and they don’t- #-touch on HOW it happened. and in my mind I read that as like. they know what happened. but this is an honest retelling. but they couldn’t- #-tell the truth but they wouldn’t outright lie either. so they just didn’t mention nerevar’s death at /all./ #idk where I’m going with the tags just. Vivec is so gd interesting. in all their complexities and super moral grayness. #and hey - I recognize others might not see the events the same. Morrowind is a game of unreliable narrators!! it’s about piecing- #-the story together in a way that gives you and your character the most closure. there’s no hard truth or right answer. #there isn’t a bug evil dragon labeled the Most Evilest Dragon for you to defeat. it’s a story where even after finishing it… there’s a- #-sense of like. did you really do what was best? is this land that is now your responsibility going to prosper from your actions? #and honest to god the fact that Skyrim comes in and says ‘It doesn’t.’ is fucking RIVETING. #the thing is it's just a bit mindboggling to me how i know all this and yet #i was running scared from doing anything about blanket contraceptives until i was nearly 30 #bc like. i started obsessively using condoms only after my abortion #bc. it's terrifying to try and every control over the sex you're having when you're used to the answer being no #like. i did not want to ask and be refused i wanted to keep pretending i was in control #when the truth is the majority of the time i wasn't #but if i just didn't look at how in control i wasn't. if i didn't ask for it to stop and i didn't ask to change anything. #i didn't have to know that someone didn't care whether i was ok. so i just didn't ask. for them to stop hurting me or to use condoms. #but getting pregnant was so horrific for me that demanding condom use became less scary than the alternative #still got pregnant 3 more times i think but my body dealt with it so it's ok #but like. the last time i got raped. like the time that made me put my foot down and say something has to change #and seek help and get therapy and deal with my trauma #like it only BECAME undeniable rape instead of grudging consent to unwanted sex when i said 'i don't have unprotected sex' #'if you have to have sex with me put on a fucking condom' and he didn't so i tried to prevent him so he physically forced me #and that's the fear coming true right?
