“Although it was still bright, the bite of the sun was going. As it lessened, the pull of the beach relaxed and life began to flow back into the town, sauntering under the little trees, glancing, pausing, loud with many voices, a tide obedient to the sun which in the morning drew it down to the water’s edge and in the evening let it roll back into the land again. The townspeople who, in the baked midday hours, had sat outside their shops or done their marketing or cycled busily in the half-empty streets, now withdrew once more into their shops to serve, sallow and hollow-eyed under the weak electric light, until the last postcard, the last foreign newspaper, the last pair of wooden sandals strapped with gold seemed likely to have been sold until tomorrow. Sluggishly the tide eddied past their windows, fingering shirts and beach smocks hung on outside racks, the street loud with exhausts and peremptory hooting, speeding to Rimini, to Cesenatico, to Cervia, drawing the day’s heat away from town.”

By the way, about the female custodes drama - since I just answered anon this came to my mind-, the other day I saw something absolutely "funny".
Apparently most lore yt channels are fine with female custodes, especially those who are known to be lore human libraries.
People's reaction to them: ewww tourists >:c
Then:
Random person who clearly has only read the wiki once: *explain why they are against female custodes*
The same exact people: real man, you know so much omg 🥰
It was.. weird.

Okay, but like. The symbolism of Nick being the one who gives shelter to Kieran & MC. The man whom Eisa loved in secret but was too frightened to love in the public, now giving refuge to the child whom Eisa only bore by leaving him & the mortal whom that child openly adores. The fact that Nick has somehow stepped up for both of Eisa’s children, even when they’re fighting each other. The fact that Eisa leaving Nick is both what allowed Kieran to have MC & what orchestrated the current threat between them, and throughout it all Nick has stood steadfast, not on the side of the mortals, or the side of the Fae, but on the side of love. And the fact that he doesn’t even know he is doing it. The fact that Nick looks at Kieran and sees Eisa metaphorically, and he doesn’t even know that he is also seeing her literally. The fact that Kieran is there in Nick’s tavern and they represent everything that Nick fought for long ago, threatened by the person that Nick has been fighting for ever since. The fact that the last of Kieran’s bloodline is trying to kill everything they love, but also the last of Nick’s bloodline is trying to kill everything he could have loved, once, and Nick has stood in the way of that without even knowing what’s going on. The fact that Nick seems almost fated to be a guardian in this story. The fact that Eisa gave him an amulet to keep him alive to protect Jack, and she didn’t even realise she was also keeping him alive to protect Kieran. The fact that Nick has lived the kind of lifespan that Jack & MC both dream of, but Nick has lived it through losing his love, and MC wants it in order to remain with their love, and Jack wants it in order to fight for people like Nick without knowing that Eisa is the reason he’s lived so long in the first place. And the fact that Nick was never meant to live so long, his mind is falling apart, he is fated to protect these people but that also means that he is fated to his doom, and the fact that I don’t know what that means for MC and Jack and Kieran and I just. I just. I just.
I just have feels okay.

Crazy how I can say, "Wow, I remember when this used to cost half this price!" and mean a grocery item from approximately five years ago.
Seriously though, how much longer before we're all on the 1984 cabbage diet?

I think it's insane that cardan can't lie and yet his feelings for jude were hidden for long enough (too long) before she knew about them. It really shows how oblivious our girl jude was 😭😭

People still saying that Sansa is weak/passive/stupid is so weird to me, especially on re-read.
Like no?? This twelve-year-old child is being held hostage and abused on a regular basis after seeing her father get killed. She has to learn how to behave and predict Joffrey’s moodswings so that she doesn't get abused more. She's courteous, yes, and holds her tongue - because she's more oft than not in a very dangerous situation.
She definitely learns slowly, largely because she's learning all on her own based on her experiences, informed by what people say & what they experience. She's analytical, especially in ASOS iirc, and iirc she actually becomes quite suspicious of almost every little thing in that book. She's gradually learning what works and what doesn't, and how best to survive in dangerous situations.
And she definitely isn't passive. She verbally says she hates Joffrey and that she wants Robb to kill him (“maybe my brother will give me your head"). She also saves Ser Dontos' life, speaks back to Joffrey on a number of occasions, calms the women when even Cersei has lost her shit during the Battle of Blackwater, confronts the Hound, and attempts to run away when it's apparent that she’s about to be forced into marrying Tyrion. On top of that, she resists Lannister propaganda and manipulation internally, consistently thinking about how much she hates the Lannisters and how she misses her siblings. That's not a passive person. That's an abused girl trying to survive whilst resisting their efforts to break her.

……starting to think a lot of you do not know what the word empathetic means
#i have a lot to say about this but it is going to have to wait a few days until i’m no longer up to my ears in work#but here’s a little thing to tide you over: empathy does not a good person make#a capacity for empathy is in no way a capacity let alone willingness for good#empathy and intense horrendous cruelty are not mutually exclusive#if you think that evil comes in a single form if you think evil is just pure callousness coldness spot-it-a-mile-away inability to love#then no fucking wonder people keep doing evil terrible things like in real life and your response is always ?! W hat ?!#shocking: terrible evil people are still people. they are not robots of pure malice. they were once babies with coloring books#that’s not saying we should feel bad for them or anything at all!!! just that you guys seem allergic to acknowledging that it doesn’t take a#category 5 sociopath to commit an atrocity#everyone go read arendt’s banality of evil and go watch act of killing by joshua oppenheimer#no wonder trump keeps winning. y’all don’t view his supporters as people with any qualities other than Racism#like i know this is a fictional character but the response here is so indicative of this much broader issue that makes me want to scream#i get it. you’ve lived in a bubble your whole life and never interacted with people vastly different from yourself and had to acknowledge#their personhood as much as their viewpoints disgusted you. talk to a conservative once in your life it might be mind blowing#not bc you’ll be like WOAH :o THEYRE NOT SO BAD AFTER ALL! no!!!!! because they ARE that bad and they are also regular normal people!!!!!#you are all so incapable of viewing anyone you dislike as having internal lives! christ!#this is how trump won! how do you not see this!#seriously go watch act of killing go watch anwar who murdered hundreds of people in cold blood warmly scold his grandchild for poking a duck#too hard. like the most horrifying part of horrible ppl who commit atrocities is that they aren’t caricatures of evil#we wish they were it would make it easier to understand#agh i’m rambling i’ll shut up#god watch ppl be like Uh why are you defending trump/genocide/fascists etc#dumb fucks i’m telling you the most terrifying part about those people is that they are actually people that’s what makes it so hard to#comprehend bc atrocities are so much easier to swallow when you can pretend a force of pure evil is behind it#okokokok good night lol

Don't have the funds to buy Survivor, but I've been slowly reading Battle Scars and I wanna know why I barely see anyone talking about it??? like I've only read five chapters so far, but the writing is so good and it gives so much more insight into the Mantis crew- especially Merrin. Like I am losing my mind over this book rn where's the appreciation for it?

perpetually frothing at the mouth over Robin Hobb's dedication to an entirely textually-unsupported "100% straight" Fitz Farseer, at the expense of her own goddamn themes & craft as a writer
honey no one has ever done it like you & i hope no one ever does again!!! to write a 16-book romance complete with a magic allegory for queerness that parallels the main character's journey of self-acceptance, featuring years of pining, multiple kisses & declarations of literal soulmate-level love between a character who is on-the-page-queer & a "completely heterosexual" unreliable narrator whose massive defining flaw is the way he lies to himself about things that make him uncomfortable
& then have the gall to look down your nose at fans who pick up the not-even-fucking-subtext you've been laying down & tell us "that's ridiculous, he has sex with women, he can't be any kind of queer" i mean. i am so sorry for reading what you wrote & believing it lmfao next time i will make sure to ignore the story on the page in favor of whatever the hell is going on in your head!
