most annoying book i've read so far this year under the jump
listening
a lovely polyrhythmic instrumental piece with previously-featured tuesdaysong artist, terrifying master of the cello, abel selaocoe. this is very textured and kind of scrubs at the inside of my skull in a pleasing way. like the kind of back scrubber you can buy with a bamboo handle and the long soft bristles. popped up on my recent releases playlist from spotify.

really fucking pissed about this book and i am not able to be reasonable about it. i was really thrown, much like the fantasy prince's mother from her carriage as she was being chased by regency gossip reporters, that this was a prince harry/meghan markle RPF AU. i am a bit uncomfy about the fact that our female lead, the fantasy AU meghan markle, is some flavor of fantasy Gaelic instead of fantasy mixed-race. now, i have no particular moral or physical beef with RPF but i don't typically seek it out. but/also/and, much like works about marilyn monroe, i think works with the specter of princess diana are in poor taste. can we leave these women alone maybe
i got about halfway through the book before this revelation and didn't really feel like it succeeded at much of anything it was trying to do. oddly informal and choppy, like it was originally intended as a contemporary romance with some urban magic and changed to regency in a late draft. this is combined with some fairly weak prose: more simple sentence structure than i would expect in a book for young adults, far too many proper nouns, and a lack of interest in showing not telling.
i straight up don't understand why the leads are attracted to each other if she keeps making very public mistakes and he's a rude cunt. i have read other books (most recently the t kingfisher books) where someone grows to love a very gruff or taciturn man, but it takes time and mutual trust and an effort on both sides, none of which happen here. the core conflict is duty to family in all its various forms vs the heart wants what the heart wants. the conflict is not much of a conflict, though, because characters come to realizations within three sentences of confronting them and then vocalize them with therapyspeak. someone literally pats someone else's hand and goes, "It's hard, I know." the author mercifully did not describe the sad little pursed sympathy mouth but i'm sure it was there.
i'm also deeply annoyed with how this author chose to go about characterization. while the character concepts are people i would love to meet in a ttrpg, it feels very concerned about Good Representation and it makes everyone feel very wooden. i think when you put together characters from a list of various oppressions and disabilities it starts feeling like a grownup version of a children’s ensemble show meant to sell little blind box figurines. here is the Chronically Ill one, and her color is pink! here is the Addicted one, and his color is green! here is the Goth and Depressed one, and her color is black with some bones! here is the Gay one who was once badly hurt by the Addicted one, and we don’t care enough about him to give him a color! here is the superficially fantasy-Jewish one, and we don’t care enough about her to give her a color or an action figure either!
while normally i would love to read a book with two! TWO! canonically bisexual leads of different genders! this book is written for the "folx" spectrum of gays instead of the "fags" part of the spectrum and it strays very close to a modern morality tale for me.
this popped up on a list of books with bi leads i think, but if it was here or on libby i cannot remember.
anyway! fucking hated this one.

pleasantly surprised these came in back to back off my holds lists, bc they are about the perfumer Grace and Grace's former landlord, the spy Marguerite. my favorite of these Saint of Steel series is still the one with the werebear nun. i have nothing to complain about these books and not much to say about them either. they were such a delightful and competent change of pace after the annoyance of the previously discussed book.

oh i loved these. oh i LOOOOOOVED these. how the fuck does novik do it. she is so good at capturing the very specific feel of a grandpa military historical novel. except with dragons. i love these in the same way i know i will love the patrick o'brien books if i ever get around to reading them. i was a navy brat and unfortunately this is fucking catnip to me. truly i have inherited all my father's tastes

watching
largely fallow week. i don't have anything particularly great to say about The Bad Batch, but when have i ever. have not caught up with dunmeishi bc my siblings have once again inadvertently locked me out of the netflix account i pay for. considering a vpn for many reasons but watching netflix and watching porn (the state of texas does not want me or anyone else to watch porn within her borders) are the two big reasons for. idk. cashing out the paltry cash-back credit card rewards and coughing them up for a vpn. vpn opinions welcomed, i know most of them are straight garbage

playing
i straight up ran out of money in genshin, which is pretty hard to do since they're pretty generous with it? i have spent several million in-game currency on leveling up neuvilette (i am so so so happy to not have to collect any fucking starfish mats for him anymore [mats are different materials you have to collect or buy in-game in order to level up a character. very grindy most of the time]). anyway i am now scrabbling around for the last couple chests and puzzles i marked on my map in fontaine. i haven't bothered with grinding for his specific boosting artifacts or leveling up his talents all the way yet but this is really not shabby. i have the bad habit of completely levelling up all my 5-stars and then ignoring them until i need them for a specific fight or a specific level of the monthly..battle royale puzzle? i don't really know how to describe the abyss. anyway when i do eventually need his pretty intense water AOE attacks i will frantically grind for his talent mats. right now we're grinding for other things thanks
Tumblr media
this latest update contains both the best and worst new areas so far. the underwater lost city of Remuria is a fuckin banger. gorgeous. incredible puzzles. very fun music-based quest line with new abilities and giant whale. however, im kind of disappointed by the new coastline area in the map: there is pretty much nothing there. almost no interactable plants to harvest, very few enemies, almost no chests. i get that they are focusing their time and attention on the new underwater area everyone will be focusing on (killer, btw, super dense and great use of vertical space). very lore-heavy expansion, sort of what if atlantis was a bit roman-inspired and also. hold on. wait a second.
Tumblr media
sorry this has just occurred to me at 10:21 PM on Monday night as im drafting this but oh my god are the fucking fontanians the Sea Peoples of the bronze age collapse. this is hysterically funny lore if true. im going to have to go back and reread a lot of the environmental storytelling notes but oh my GOD that's extremely funny if true. genshin has some of the most batshit lore of any game ive ever played and im so sad that so few game journos are focusing on it.
where was i. leveling up characters in legally-not-france who may or may not be descendants of the sea peoples. i often find myself leveling up characters in genshin not based on how useful they are to the party but by how fun the bosses i need to fight for their mats are? for example: neuvilette is a water-based AOE character with not a lot of on-field time. however this big electric seahorse, whose antlers i need to level him up, is really fun to fight and i can knock it out in about thirty seconds.

making
my sister's birthday is tomorrow! my birthday package to her was kind of heavy on stupid little trinkets and art books and not very much like. homemade? so i cranked out a little sampler. it's framed i promise i simply forgot to take a picture of it framed. about 3"x3", slightly adapted from a piece in Julie Jackson's Subversive Cross Stitch. i do think the F and C turned out way better (or at least the backstitching stands out way more) but hey. sometimes you need to hastily stitch a gift with the limited colors you have on hand

Why is everyone so biased toward One Piece? Literally every character from One Piece I see is the ugliest creature I've ever had the discourtesy to lay eyes on and they're winning by a landslide against genuinely attractive characters.
Oh boy, we've gone over this a couple times but it's been probably a month or two. It's not so much biased as it is a large and organized fandom. Plus good writing can make anyone hot even though the art style can take some getting used to.
Let me explain some fandoms have dedicated blogs that do nothing but reblog polls so that fandom can vote in random fandom related polls all in one place. Now in tournaments it is very unfair sometimes because they can organize themselves and rally to sway a vote quickly. Now I know one piece and bleach do have dedicated blogs when it comes to anime fandoms. Other non-anime fandoms that I know have blogs are Star Trek, Star Wars and Ninjago. I only know this because I used to be really big into voting in tournaments poll.
Plus I do normally share the Fandom overall week in review list and the anime and manga list. This shows the most popular Fandom related trends of the past week by Tumblr's own data. And as someone who's been following that page just for fun since probably 2012, one piece frequently is in the top 20 on the overall chart and I don't think I've ever seen it not in the top five on the anime and manga chart. The fandom is just that large and active. I mean one piece frequently trends when a new chapter or episode drops. It's just how it is.
And as someone who used to despise one piece, I did give it a shot after I watched and enjoyed the live action. Now it's actually one of my favorite animes. However, the manga is so much better due to the less than stellar pacing of the anime. The only reason I'm looking forward to the remake so much is for fixed pacing then maybe more people would give one piece of chance. Because the story and the writing is so good. However, the art style is not everyone's cup of tea and I do understand that and that is probably the number one complaint.
Fun fact, at one point there was a group of you campaigning to get one piece characters banned from my polls because the art style was misogynistic. Luckily that was short-lived because I was about to start blocking people. So let's not start that up again.
Now I will concede that the one piece fandom does like to do cursed polls And definitely request ugly characters on occasion just to watch the world burn. You know who you are. But we're talking about a show that has furries and fish people and characters that can turn into dragons and snake hybrids and dinosaur people. So there's a lot of variety in your humanoids not all of them are hot
I know it bothers a lot of people that one piece wins so many polls but I see this as a case of don't hate the player. Hate the game. So if you can't beat them, join them. So I would recommend if this really pisses you off so much start your own blog dedicated to reblogging polls for whatever fandom you think needs one. So you can start rallying and organizing your fandom against the one piece fandom so you can try to take them down. Don't know if it'll work but it's a start. Again, learn from them and use their tactics against them

Everyone keeps asking you "Have you heard of [XYZ] media property to turn into an AU?", so I wanted to flip it around a touch.
What super obscure/specific piece of media are you a fan of that literally no one talks about, that you haven't made an AU based on?
RECORD OF A FALLEN VAMPIRE.
I can't make an AU out of it, actually, but you should all read it. Yes, read. There was never an anime adaptation. Psyren is also excellent, but I've mentioned it a few times.
Some other lesser-known favorites of mine:
+Anima
Liar Game
Natsume's Book of Friends (this is my favorite anime/manga of all time)
Dog Days
Enigma
Fairy Gone
Hikaru no Go
How to Make an Invisible Man
Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa (localized as My Monster Secret)
King of Thorn
Mai the Psychic Girl (might actually be the first manga I ever read)
Planet With
The Demon Girl Next Door
The Earl and the Fairy
Tokyo Ravens
Wish Upon A Pleiades (Yes, the car-company made magical girl anime)
Witch Hunter
I don't think I could make an actual AU out of almost any of these, to be honest, but you're on my blog now which means you have to put up with my opinions.

So what if I make it out past the edge?
So what if I never come back again?
I am only a nameless soul
Heading into a pure, black void

Where can you go when it’s all in your head?

Thinking about Dion washing up on the shores of Ash (x), struggling with the burden of survival—how he’s quite literally standing in the wake of the ashes of his former life, revived from the death he expected and forced to face the ramifications of not only the destruction of his homeland & Sanbreque, but the world as he’d known it from the gilded confines of his royal cage.
Thinking about the way he would run across the wild wyvern tails Harpocrates showed him when he left the Hideaway expecting his end—how the victory he never expected coils and twists like dark tentacles within him, and every breath he takes is a reminder that he still feels undeserving of a good life, knowing he can never atone for the destruction left in Bahamut’s —Ultima’s—wake.
Thinking about how he is torn between wishing his death was the end of atonement and wishing he had not left Terence now that he knows he survives Origin—the way he is torn between his desire to return to what was once familiar, safe and constant and the way he knows he will never be the same man he was no matter how many times he might play out repairing the thing he knows he broke forever with Terence in the halls of Ran’Dellah (x).
Thinking about how he feels guilty for enjoying the fullness of the air without the weight of Bahamut in his chest, even as he misses the light of the dragon storming within every waking hour—how he feels more naked without the armor of Bahamut’s scales than he has ever before in his life, despite knowing that the humanity he so desperately longed for came at the expense of his dominance and the eikon of light.
—thinking about how all of this now pales when he looks at it in comparison to the optimism of the Phoenix himself; how Joshua, who has survived a certain death not once but twice in his identical 28 years, still ventures forward, determined to save others even as he desperately searches for both truth and his family, no matter how high the personal cost.
Thinking about how standing next to an equal in both rank and status—next to both a prince and fellow dominant—for the first time in his life both delights and challenges him in radically new ways; the way Joshua pushes, prods and demands of him in ways no one but his father ever dared, though with a touch of healing fire that permeates through the heart of him—bright enough to want to hide from, but not painful enough to burn.
Thinking about Dion dealing with the ramifications of his willingness to follow Joshua so easily—the way he can doubt, question and even disagree with the man before him and still desire to believe him, the same way he has since the minute Joshua entered that tent with nothing but a plucked white wyvern, a companion and a tale to tell about monsters and mothercrystals all the same.
Thinking about Dion thinking—how he must speak of his debts now that it is over...and figure out who he is now with all the feelings that living dredged up in the dragoon who met a phoenix’s end.

You know, I’ve been thinking a bit about this panel. Specifically, about the part where WG considers this incident ‘far more severe than Ohara’.
And the thing is, this is typical storytelling, right? Of course this incident is going to be more severe ― the protagonist is here and so what is happening must be the best, the biggest, the most important event around. And if it is an echo of the past, then it must reverberate on a bigger scale. That’s just how it is. We’ve all seen this before, this sentence where the author informs us that something big is going to happen as a way to hype us up, and uses past events we know or learn about as comparison.
And, okay, I have nothing against it, but a lot of time, it’s not like it’s ever explained why this thing happening now is more important, more impactful then the one they reference in the past. It is impactful to us as readers or watches, because this is the story we are following. But in the world itself? Almost always unclear. They say it is going to be big, and it is, but we never get a sense of scale on why it is bigger and more important than whatever happened before. Most of the time the explanation is that the protagonist is here.
But here we do get an explanation.
Tumblr media
These are good reasons. These are, in fact, excellent reasons for sending a bigger force against Egghead than Ohara. And, what’s most interesting to me, they have literally nothing to do with Luffy. This incident is not big because the protagonist is here, but because it is just that damn important in the context of the very world they live in. Luffy’s presence had no bearing on the fact that Kizaru or the Vice-Admirals are coming. It is specifically stated that they learned about Luffy’s arrival only after everything was decided.
This makes it very obvious that the world moves beyond and without Luffy. Things happen that Luffy has nothing to do with. This incident would have been big even if the crew had ended up on Elbaf instead of Egghead, and while Luffy’s presence does change things, it does not in any way make what is happening more important on the world scale.

Currently reading Baratie, and let me tell you how much I’ve missed pre-time skip Sanji, I love current Sanji too but this guy just had that something that made me love him so so much
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also i love how it’s a common thing that Sanji fights with clients lmao
Tumblr media
I love Johnny and Yosaku so much and I was very excited to see them again, they’re the chillest funniest dudes ever and a great addition to Baratie and arlong park
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But come on let’s be honest the highlight of this arc above all else is the introduction of Mihawk, everytime this guy appears in the series I just love him more and good god was his introduction good, from the way he was mentioned before as a force of nature, to the intro itself where he takes A WHOLE ASS PAGE to the fact his only reason to go after Krieg and his men is for funsies
Tumblr media
Mihawk’s introduction sets him up as the final foe for Zoro to defeat, and it does it really well, but he’s also such an interesting character himself and I can’t wait to learn more about him in like 5 years when Oda decides to show his backstory
Tumblr media
Also, I need more of Luffy interacting with this guy cuz it’s so funny when he does (and I think it only happened here and in marineford??)

the way i have thought about trafalgar law such an ungodly amount that like. the brain worms have come up with headcanons and i am becoming so delusional im like no it's canon dont you know. like. ofc law doesnt kill people look he's being haunted by the memory of all the people he killed as a child in his anger he literally named his sword after them. and i wont even pause to explain how tf i came to all these conclusions but i promise you they make so much sense to me.
me, delirious: the heart pirates did so much PR to not let it slip that law is a big softie he literally is a doctor look listen to me he reclaimed his parent's legacy and has a sword that doesnt cut and an ability that cant kill and you mean to tell me th-

How do I explain the ways in which the bill origins fic 'A Romance of Many Dimensions' by haley3 rewired my brain without needing to give paragraphs upon paragraphs of context. The fic is something like 200,000 words long. Almost every single good moment calls back to things that are set up earlier in the fic
#godsrambles#girl help 'the colors in our universe are the same as the ones in his home dimension because our universe is made out of a piece of bill'#makes NO sense without adding way more context#not to speak of 'bill is obsessed with ford because he can Feel the same cosmic thread connecting them as the one that drew him towards-#-meeting his henchmaniacs which makes him convinced against all odds that ford is gonna join him'#and the long beginning is set in flatland. its what finally got me to read the book flatland#and now I will literally think to myself 'its not that i Have to do x or y tasks. i GET to do x or y tasks isnt that great'#'i get to live in a physical form that experiences so many vivid thoughts and sensations while on bills favorite planet in the multiverse'#and i will be like 'why should i drag my feet about learning this or doing that. bill was literally trapped in a 2d world-'#'and KILLED to be able to experience a life as 3d and colorful as the one im in'#'and just like bill was so desperate to learn and see and do Everything that the axolotl gave him a ton of power so he could do that.'#'i Also want to learn and do and see everything i possibly can. and i literally HAVE the chance to do that'#'so i'd better start actually Trying to do and see and learn everything i can'#and then i brush my teeth slightly more often or whatever#fucking unhinged and ridiculous way of getting myself to do tasks#the events of this fic arent even my headcanon for bills powers and backstory. i just think its neat!#and now my brain has been permanently rewired by a got dam fan fic.#anyways sorry for all the spoilers but i mean. i doubt many folks would decide to read a fic that long without being intrigued by spoilers#most frustrating thing is that the hard hitting spoilers SEEM understandable without context.#but i promise there is a lot of context missing that makes it make sense why they are good plot points and not just weird random happenings#edit: its 200000 words not 600000. how did I misread that

idk who needs to hear this but growing native plants is not hard at all, at all
#you could be starting seeds RIGHT NOW assuming your last frost date is some time in april or somethin#put the seeds in the fridge in moist sand or a moist paper towel#if its too late buy them from the fuckin store somewhere. or wait till next fall and toss em on the ground after mild tilling#throw some metal mesh of some sort over it to protect it from the rodents and BOOM. there ya go. the seeds are cheap asf too#its hard to kill a native plant. they naturally grow in that environment for a reason.#you can go a day or two without watering sometimes in summer and still be fine (depending on the plant ofc & if theyre potted)#idk its just. like. so easy. everyone could do it. everyone SHOULD do it.#in an apartment? get a window flower pot and plant some in there.#no excuses to not try and do the bare minimum. every piece of turf grass you see should fill you with violent rage to the point where#your body feels physically compelled to grow native plants in retaliation.#some you can even grow inside. i have some vine cuttings im growing inside rn that i started some time last year at the end of summer#from a wild plant outside. just look up how to grow it. watch the jankiest video you can find first.#i trust the guy with the scuffed set up thats shakily holding his phone scooping home-made dirt into a red solo cup over the#pristinely filmed shots of a garden and a man all dressed up nice#i mean idk hes prolly got some good advice too i just trust the other guy more ykno#give a fuck#literally tho this vine is so tall rn its touching my ceiling sdvvfsdhgdfs idk wtf imma do with it.#but i love it and its one of my favorite native plants and i LITERALLY grew it in a fuckin red solo cup.
