Trollhunters is unrealistic. Not bc of the magic or trolls or aliens or whatever, but bc you're telling me while Merlin was spouting his bullshit- not a single one of these teenagers called him a dumb bitch or something? I don't believe you

Okay, here goes nothing. Some spoilers ahead.
Today will be my first time rewatching "Rise of the titans".
Context of the first time I watched this movie: I binged Trollhunters and 3Bellow in a month while preparing a final exam, and Wizards was my reward the same day I took it. They were literally my emotional support during that awful month, and I'll always be thankful for them. Even 3B, although I didn't enjoy it as much as the others and seemed endless, it served to keep me company and distract me a little from the stress. So, when the movie was confirmed, I was super excited. I talked a lot with two of my friends who watched the series, and arranged with one of them to watch the movie together the night it came out with a Netflix party. It didn't end well.
As I said, Trollhunters was a very important emotional support. Not just because of that month, but because everytime I felt down, I watched my favorites episodes, the one that made me laugh, and the one that made me cry, "Hero with a thousand faces" and "Jimhunters". So what did I do when the movie ended?
I cried from the anger. I cried because they erased everything I loved, like all the things that helped me feel better were absolutely nothing. I cried because I had lost something that made me feel good, complete, and had been left with a hole in my chest. Yeah, I could still watch the series whenever I wanted, but then I'll remember "oh yeah, this is pointless, Jim's not the Trollhunter and will never be, and all of this will never happen" aaaaand I would cry again. It's like, why did I even watch Jim overcome his fears, his insecurities, form bonds, grow up, if none of this will ever happen? Just to have the knowledge that Jim remembers everything and will suffer from it? Yeah no, fuck you.
I know it sounds dramatic, but I've always felt strong emotions towards the things I formed a strong emotional bond with. I remember sending my friend voice messages crying my heart out and then falling asleep completely drained.
So, yeah, I don't feel a lot of good things about this movie. The wery few things I enjoyed from the movie (again, I'm talking about the first time I watched, we'll see if it changes) are:
The animation.
The only thing I can't argue with is that the animation is fucking amazing. The backgrounds, the fights, the magic. It looks fucking great.
Eli's design and Aja in queen mode
Ignoring everything that comes with it (the reunion with Steve, the stupid pregnancy thing) I'm a simp for them, they can step on me whenever they want. My feelings towards Aja may or may not change today though lol
The Jlaire moments
Not much to say here, I cried with everyone one of them and I love their relationship so much.
Aaaaand that's it. I don't remember any more good things. I wish I could listen to the voice messages I sent my friend but there's no sign of them.

Could I request some reactions from Draal, Blinky and Aargh on a teen human(gender neutral reader pls!) Who has the same personality as Marcy from Amphibia, showing them a bunch of video games they love please? Especially some being more gruesome then others, would love to read it! :D
Heck yeah dude!! I absolutely love Marcy <3 BTW this started off simple but I went off the rails completely lmao so sorry about that TwT
✧・゚: *✧・゚:*:・゚✧*:・゚✧
You are a close friend of Jim and Toby, having grown up with them on the same block. You became a trio: inseparable. You were with Jim as he picked up the amulet, you were running beside Toby as Bular hunted you three down, and you were beside the two as you graced the grounds of Trollmarket. Your mind is completely blown by it. You were already off running around: taking notes in your math notebook of what you saw, the types of trolls that were around, facts Blinky spewed out, and even that big blue grumpy one that threatened Jim in front of you!
While your intellect proves to be insightful on the battlefield, your clumsiness also poses a potential threat to yourself and others. Regardless, you’re a valued member of the Trollhunters and have garnered respect from most of Trollmarket (and even Vendel himself). You have helped countless times, and even put your life on the line for others. Now… here are the thoughts of some specific residents of Trollmarket! >:]
Draal
Before the duel with Jim, your optimism confuses him, if not annoys him. He legit just threatened to kill your best friend, and all you can do is stare at him with stars in your eyes. Great to have admirers, he supposes. Even if they are some imposter, wannabe Trollhunter’s ally. As you walk away with the group, he can’t help but guffaw as you trip over your feet. If these were the Trollhunter’s allies- the supposed saviors of man and trollkind- then the world truly was doomed.
After getting humbled by Jim, his attitude begins to shift more. Yes, there are moments of annoyance (especially when you ask to measure his horns or teeth and ramble about things he doesn’t understand), but overall you’re strange, and it’s amusing. You are easily impressed by nearby anything he does, and that’s fine. It’ll start to fuel his ego again.
You start to hang around Jim’s more often than not and Draal enjoys having you around. The majority of the time you’re taking notes, and when you’re not, you’re geeking out about some vampire books and other fixations. He tells you he’s met a few, and when you ask if they’re anything like in the shows you watch (attractive, seductive), he hits you with a hard “no” and laughs at your disappointment. Human’s obsession with vampires was so strange.
Draal teases you a lot, and even if it’s mean-spirited you just go along with it the majority of the time. If you do mention something, he’ll back down from it. But it doesn’t stop him from occasionally knocking that new novel you got from the library out of your hand.
Video games are rather confusing to him. Not that he hates them of course! But he doesn’t quite enjoy them as much as Arrrgh does. Of course, he’ll play the more violent games you have, but he doesn’t care for the shooters. He’d much rather tear them apart with his bare hands, thank you very much. There was one time when you had to beg Draal to not destroy your TV the first time you introduced him to Skyrim.
Table-top games on the other hand? Absolutely! He loves playing DnD with you. He likes having more interaction and freedom with the choices he makes when compared to video games where you have to follow the plot. Blinky or Toby often narrates when you have game nights with the group. Out of everyone, you and Draal are the most competitive. You two both get into character and often come up with strategies. Sometimes a little too much for everyone’s liking. The table often gets crushed, and there have been times when you both were at each other’s throats.
You’re now his little sibling. No questions asked. You jokingly mention something along the lines of a “found-family” trope, and after a brief explanation of it, he just subtly agrees with that being your relationship with him. Prepare for a protective big brother, even if you know your way around trouble.
Arrrgh
You both are automatically besties. That’s it, I don’t make the rules. There’s no doubt about it that you’re all over him when you first get to meet Arrrgh. While Jim is stressed about trolls in his home and Toby is freaking out, you’re bombarding the giant, green ball of moss with millions of questions. He thinks it's adorable and while slightly overwhelmed, he doesn’t mind responding to them. His answers are short and vague though, and Blinky ends up intervening and answers with more detail.
It honestly doesn’t take a lot for him to grow attached to you. He finds your energy very endearing, and you manage to light up the room with it even during the most hopeless times. You surprisingly don’t get as overwhelmed compared to everyone else in the group, though it doesn’t stop Arrrgh from checking up on you. You might wanna write down how much of a good comfort buddy he is.
Speaking of which! If you are down, he won’t hesitate to do what he can to comfort you. If you need to vent, he is all ears. He isn’t much of a talker, but by God, he is a good listener. His advice is short and simple: usually straight to the point. Regardless, it doesn’t undermine how sweet and thoughtful his words are. Most of the time you talk about how overwhelming your parents are, and often he assures you that only wants the best for you but doesn’t know how to show it. A part of you thinks otherwise, but you know that they do mean well.
When you visit Toby’s house, the three of you have movie nights. A pillow fort is made in Toby’s room and you both bring all the movies you can. There’s finally the night when you manage to convince the two (mainly Toby) to binge-watch Twilight. You get so giddy it was hard not to laugh at your reaction for Arrrgh. He doesn’t understand the plot, but he’s interested in it. As much as Toby wanted to hate it, he couldn’t help but rant about Bella’s decisions with you and listening how she could’ve bettered herself. Arrrgh just nods, having been seated between the two of you and not able to escape the conversation.
This troll is pretty protective of you. You’re very capable of yourself, there’s no doubt about it. But again, your clumsiness is what gets you into trouble the majority of the time. There have been instances where you indirectly killed a goblin leader. Taking them head-on during their frenzied state is near impossible, but for Arrrgh, he’s more than willing to take it as a means of defending you. Thankfully, you are pretty witty, so you do find ways to drive them away from you.
As seen in the show, Arrrgh does love video games! You have a considerable amount of video games, ranging from violent ones like Mortal Combat to non-violent ones like Animal Crossing (one of Arrrgh’s favs). Knowing his past, you tend to stray away from the more mature games and settle for the “kiddie” stuff. Arrrgh loves Cooking Mama and Little Friends. Just remind him to be gentle with your switch- sometimes he forgets his strength.
Blinky:
Blinky would not hesitate to admit it, but it’s nice having someone who shares the same enthusiasm as he does! Especially when it comes to learning. While the troll cares deeply for Jim, he can admit that when it comes to their lessons, his less than enthusiastic attitude towards it can be drab. If not, a bit discouraging. With you, however, it’s a complete 180. He always sees you taking notes, commenting on their cultures with genuine intellect, and your analysis is always endearing to listen to. Although you still have much to learn, you are on the right track.
Besides that, you’re always a delight to be around with! He can’t help but admire your charming nature, even if at times you are ditzy. He knows you always mean well, so he can’t hold it against you. He’s most definitely “Marcy-proofed” his library; AKA, he’s put his more “delicate” items in safer places, and the potentially dangerous ones are hidden away.
While Blinky teaches you all the ropes of troll culture, you return the favor by explaining human culture to him. It’s honestly a mix of easy, and difficult. It’s not that Blinky’s dumb (no, far from that actually) or that you’re a bad teacher, it’s just the fact that he’s misinterpreted human customs and inventions for so many years.
When he turns human, you are most definitely the one teaching him how to drive… which was, all in all, a terrible idea. You knew how to drive. You had just gotten your permit for Pete’s sake! Blinky on the other hand? He’s a wild rider. You lost track of how many times you both almost crashed into a divider just because he assumed you were able to drive on it, or how many times you prayed he wouldn’t take the yellow light. When he finally stopped driving, you insisted you could both walk home.
Video games aren't his forte. The concept of them is interesting, especially with how much they are able to fit into a small disk! But alas, they are but treats to the normal troll. Although it doesn't stop him from being interested in what you have to show. The gruesome games intrigue him. Do humans really like violence that much? It doesn't really shock him that much. They haven't changed much even after centuries, have they?
Like Arrrgh, he’s a good listener. His advice is genuine too, especially when you run away to Trollmarket when things aren’t going well at home. You’ve come there an alarming amount of times to a point the conditions of your home were concerning him. Especially when you break in front of him, wailing about the pressures and stress you feel from your parents and the potential of moving out of Arcadia. At home, you feel unloved if you don’t achieve your parents' goals. They have given you so much, yet you feel you give so little in return. You love your parents, but being with them is draining.
Although Troll's culture is different when it comes to humans, he knows the burdens of expectations are all the same. That pressure of knowing that your best isn’t enough… he’s felt that. He assures you that you are doing your best, more than others could. He assures you that your tears are not a sign of weakness, but a glimpse of your strength. He assures you that you are enough. It surprises him when you suddenly hug him, though it doesn’t stop him from embracing you as well.

The way ROTT ending completely negates the best episode of the series sigh
I will never stop complaining about this movie, sorry.
It also just completely negates what we learned in For the Glory of Merlin episode as well as just them meeting Merlin who goes "Oh, yeah, hi James... wait, why you so young?"
Merlin is established to have chosen Jim as the final Trollhunter from the fucking start.
The amulet didn’t “call to Toby”. Toby just went there because Jim told him to. This is not destiny, it’s bad writing.
We also learned in Unbecoming that when Jim tried to get the amulet after school, it wasn't there. Draal had already got it somehow. So Toby getting it after school doesn't make sense, it would already be with Draal.
Even Trollhunters books confirmed that Jim is THE Trollhunter of the series.
In Age of the Amulet book Jim helped and inspired Gogun the Gentle to become a Trollhunter, resulting in him becoming one of the bravest Trollhunters to ever wield the Amulet (Kanjigar looked up to Gogun’s noble example btw). He was taught by Jim how to fight. He restored order and he was the only known Trollhunter to die from old age. In the book Gogun said that Jim  brought light to another dark age.
And in Wizards timeline he’s able to befriend Deya and push her into the right direction, resulting in her becoming the first Trollhunter.
Most of Jim’s actions in the past are what result in Trollhunters even happening, and if he hadn’t been there, they would’ve ended up ruining the future.
He’s literally “The Once and Future Trollhunter”.
And now i hate ROTT movie even more because it was stated over and over again (in the books and in Wizards) that YOU CAN'T CHANGE HISTORY.
btw the books writers are smarter than the movie writers.

Trollhunters au where everyone in Arcadia who’s grown up there has some kind of inherent magic about them, although some have more than others.
This is kinda inspired by Your Future Hasn’t Been Written Yet by Sakon76 on ao3, in the sense that people generally have a type of magic that they’re drawn to and can become really good at, but some people can learn other types and become a Jack of all trade master wizard type thing.
Some types of magic in the fic are smith magic, techno magic, shadow magic, and winter magic. There’s more but some get into spoiler territory if u haven’t read it and are going to so…
Anyway, in this au any kind of magic you can think of probably exists here and in Arcadia, everyone is capable of at least one of them, with varying levels of power and breadth (amount of magicks they’re capable of), although most of them don’t know it.
For example, Toby is good at troll types of magic, geomancy mostly, with a hint of smith magic. Before he knows about magic he’s drawn to rocks as we can see in the show. He would probably be really talented at geomancy, but struggle to do anything or than lower level smith magic
Claire would be an example of someone more powerful. Even before she ever knows about magic, she’s weirdly aware of her surroundings, almost like she has a six sense. She’s always been able to see better in the dark. When she does learn about magic she picks it up surprisingly fast and the only reason she doesn’t branch out beyond shadow magic right away is because she doesn’t know she can, but she always wants to know more.
Everyone else would fall into similar types:
Jim would be really good at potions (cooking), but have a hard time with literally anything else. This makes be Trollhunter, needing to cleave stones, kinda suck and super stressful.
Mary, would be really good at the software portions of techno magic. She’s also good at weaving and energy, but she’s less powerful with them because she’s not as interested in them. She could probably have a similar breadth to Claire (maybe smaller), but less power because unlike Claire, she’s not interested in much more.
Eli would also be good at Techno magic, both the software and hardware and a few other things, but he’s not that powerful. Most of his abilities come from the fact that he’s genuinely just skilled with tech.
Steve and Darci are harder to figure out, but I think it would hilariously if Steve was really good with plants, but has no idea.
Like, he doesn’t even have to try to get plants to like him, and he has no idea because he’s never thought about it. His parents were not plant people and he’s not friends with plant people, before and after he learns about magic, so he’s just going around with some powerful plant magic and no knowledge about it. They land in Camelot and suddenly plants are sprouting where he walks??? There’s higher magic levels 900 years in the past, which is messing with his uncontrolled magic, but they don’t know that. I just want copious amounts of confusion.
And finally, Darci. I have no idea what kind of magic she would have. Is there such a thing as Dance magic??? Chill vibes? Wind? Who knows? Whatever it is, it’s cool and she’s good at it. Ooo maybe, like Empathy and aura reading? And wind could work with dance? Maybe? Idk, but I think her powers would be more subtle than the others.
These are only, like, the main teenagers in Tales of Arcadia that I’m pretty sure grew up in Arcadia, but this would apply to all the other kids and the adults that grew up here.
Btw, I don’t think I mentioned, the reason it’s only people who grew up in Arcadia is because of the Heartstone. It’s literally huge and radiates magic so powerful it actually affects the humans living above it.

Hi! What do you dislike about the way Morgana is written in ToA?
Hello! Thank you for your question! Now I'll try to explain you what I dislike in ToA Morgana
Firsly, I have to say that I'm in love with Morgana from Trollhunters. She's literally queen of the darkness, her look is full of royalty and madness. But the way she was written in Wizards...... I just made a quick sketch about it
Tumblr media
You see?? Morgana from Wizards feels like totally different character. If the only thing that I dislike in Trollhunters Morgana was her low level of magic power (btw even Angor Rot used more magic tricks in s1, but he is MUCH weaker than she), so in Wizards situation is very bad.
!! I have to say that I KNOW that Wizards should have got the second season and all the character bevelopment could be another, BUT!! I'M TALKING ABOUT THE FINAL PRODUCT THAT I SAW IN THE SERIES! THANK YOU FOR ATTENTION
Back to my words, Wizards gave us another Morgana. And I can't imagine how she turned from cute girl that wants to protect magical creatures to crazy bitch-ass woman that made an army of changelings IN A FEW DAYS. In this post I've written my own Morgana backstory in which from the start she have some mental issues and tendencies to violence.
Wizards Morgana feels strange. In this show she is a victim, but I don't feel any emotions about her tradegy. Why? Because I remember how she was acting in Trollhunters. Do you remember her villainous laugh when she deceived Angor Rot and took his soul? She told him to kill all Trollhunters but in Wizards she tries to save trolls. Umm, what? Okay, she also was doing cruel experiments on troll whelps (and obviously have stolen a lot of human children) to make changelings. Or the creepy moment when she first scares Claire and then takes control of her body to kill Jim? Oh, but she's actually a good girl, I assure you! She manipulates Strickler's feelings to achieve her goal and prevent Jim and Toby from getting out of the Shadow Realm, although he is almost her son.
Perhaps the problem was that the writers needed to introduce the Secret Orden into the plot for a future film, but it could have been done the same way with Morgana's old portrayal, although it would have made her a slightly weaker character. Anyway, making Morgana Secret Orden's champion would not changed her personality very much. Or just not that fast.
I cannot sympathize to a character who, on the one hand, wants to save magical creatures, and on the other, is ready to use any way to get her goal. Instead, I want to admire a strong female character who is willing to get her hands bloodied and wear the crown on her head.
Well, I think I'm done with that theme and thank you for your question!

Jlaire Week Ask Game
Yeah, I went ahead and answered all of them. :P
Light and Darkness - What got you into Jlaire in the first place and what makes it one of if not your favorite ship?
I’m pretty sure I shipped them from the very first episode. First, we’ve been introduced to Jim, who is like the sweetest character ever. So when we saw him literally drooling over Claire, we know she has to be special.
It doesn’t take much time for them to interact and I remember loving that scene because I didn’t know there was so much Spanish in the show (at least in the first season). Both that interaction and the one just before the audition show they’re actually interested in each other and I’ve loved their dynamic from the beginning.
I think they somehow remind me of my own characters, Zem and Aury, since he’s the anxious one and she has to help him (even though Aury is way more short-tempered than Claire).
Romeo and Juliet- What's your favorite Jlaire moment form Trollhunters?
There are many good ones to choose. I love when she discovers his secret, the dance in the hill and when he reaches out to help her when she makes that mega-portal. They really care about each other and I think the best part is how we’re able to see their relationship flourish during the seasons.
Beauty and the Beast- What's your favorite Jlaire moment from Wizards?
The picnic, for sure. I think we should have seen more Jlaire interactions when he was a half Troll. I loved all the scenes where Claire gets to protect Jim, showing how much she has improved as a sorceress, but there’s something about them being able to relax and have an actual date.
Tragic Love - What's your Jlaire heartbreaking moment in the series?
Even though Jim knowing he’s not going to survive if they go back to the present is a close one, I have to say when Claire finds his soul wandering over the Killahead Bridge in the Shadow Realm. I’m a hopeless romantic and what breaks my heart is that “being close but still too far from each other” if you know what I mean.
My Romeo - What's your favorite Jlaire quote from Trollhunters?
From Hero of a 1000 faces: “This is the worst day of my life.” “That’t the real Jim.” It’s so funny, but also shows how much she’s gotten to know him.
100 Life times - What's your favorite Jlaire Quote from Wizards?
That’s a tough one. I liked the “I'd date you for a hundred lifetimes, Jim Lake.”… until the movie came out. So I guess: “But I've fought across time and space to bring you back.” Because of the same reason that scene is so heartbreaking to me.
Toby dating Advices - What's your advice for Jim that would help with him Claire
Actually, I think things worked out quite well. I would have advised him to be braver but he actually ended up being it, so...
Mary Dating Advice- what's your advice for Claire that would help her with Jim.
Actually, I think things worked out quite well.
time and Space - What's your Aus for Jim and Claire relationship or what's your favorite Au for them?
I have a soft spot for Beauty and the Beast kind of stories, so most of my Aus revolve around that. I seriously thing Troll Jim was underused and I’d have liked to see more of them as a couple, like travelling to New Jersey. That’s why I had to write about that and why Lights and Shadows of Camelot is the culmination of it. BTW, I’ve written a lot about Jlaire in my fanfics, if you’re interested 😊
Shadowhunter - What's your favorite headcanons for Jlaire?
They send messages all the time, checking out the other is okay. Jim makes Claire her favorite cookies and she takes him on dates using portals to visit new places.
If you have any more questions or want me to elaborate about anything, don't be afraid to ask!
Sadly, I won't be able to do any prompts, but I'm gonna share some Jlaire art I have around and you can check out my fanfics for more Jlaire content!:
-New Jersey: A brief story of what happened in the journey to New Jersey that had place during the season 2 of 3Below.
-Awakening: A novelized version of the 11th episode of the third season, "Jimhunters". Includes original new scenes.
-The Arrival: Final chapter of "New Jersey", connecting the story with "Wizards".
-Light through yonder window: After being attacked by Nomura, Jim is brought to the hospital. Claire decides she has to go and stay by his side. Tells what happened between the episodes 'Claire and Present Danger' and 'Battle of Two Bridges' and a couple of things more.
-Waiting: Jim has entered the Darklands. Claire and Toby will have to act quickly and not fall into despair.
-Butterflies and Christmas Jlaire, from Arcadian Nights.
-Lights and Shadows of Camelot: Claire has just discovered her magic powers and goes to Camelot so Morgana can teach her. One night, she'll meet the Trollhunter.

Hi there! If you dont mind, what are your favorite headcannons about Strickle and Barabra? You can also include Jim and Strickler if you want.
Hi! Nice question, BTW!
When it comes to Stricklake, here are my favorite headcanons:
- when Strickler visited Lakes' house for the first time, it was strictly for reconnaissance to see how much Jim's mother knew about the amulet. However, after talking to Barbara, it quickly transformed into 'getting closer to the amulet through her' plan. He fell in love midway, though;
Barbara found Strickler interesting and felt some attraction since the first meeting. I headcanon that she fell in love first, though she was slightly reluctant to demonstrate it openly (as she had a failed relationship experience before);
Strickler likes Barbara's strong-willed and brave nature, as well as her honesty and openness;
one of the main reasons why Barbara agreed to date Walter was the fact that he actually cared about her son and respected her as a mother. I headcanon that at some point, Barbara tried to date someone who treated Jim as a burden and obstacle to their relationship. And well, like my stepdad says 'if you truly love someone, you come to love their children too'. Strickler sees Jim as his son - and that's the hill I'll die on, LOL;
some wishful thinking here, but I headcanon that the bonding spell wasn't fully broken, and Strickler and Barbara share the lifespan now;
another headcanon is that Strickler secretly wished to be able to show affection the troll way too, but refrained not to scare Barbara. She learned about it eventually and encouraged him not to restrict himself;
Strickler is a sappy romantic. Fight me, LOL.
As for Jim and Strickler:
Walter approached him first, even though it was strictly professional. Jim wasn't the only student who was coming for advice, but he certainly ended as his favorite one;
Strickler would have gotten rid of any other student if they had been the Trollhunter instead. Jim was lucky to grow close enough to him before everything started;
Jim saw a father figure in Strickler way before he found the amulet. That's why Strickler's betrayal was so heart-crushing to Jim;
Jim refused to suspect Strickler of being a changeling because that would be no different from suspecting Toby or Barbara;
nevertheless, Jim was willing to forgive Strickler and greet him as a part of his family;
Strickler is the one who gives Jim advice about the romance.

RotT ranting ‘cause I need to express my unhappiness.
JIM YOU COMPLETE FUCKING IDIOT!
There is a whole ass 20 min long ep in Trollhunters called ‘Unbecoming’ exploring the question/insecurity of “What if Jim wasn’t the Trollhunter?” The answer clearly shown in the episode is “The whole world will go to shit, and in the end Jim is the Trollhunter, Amulet or not.”
Ya hear that Jim? AMULET or NOT.
So why is it that the 1st thing young Jimmy does when the Amulet breaks is go, “Oh no but can i be a hero without the Amulet?😱” Bitch EXCUSE ME??
Where did all that character development go huh? Up Gunmar’s fat asshole? ‘Cause no way are the writers doing this arc again that they already did very well in a series explicitly dedicated to Jim alone, without the time limit of a movie and the need to include sixty million other main characters from the other shows and all their separate arcs.
But apparently, the writers collectively decided to have selective amnesia that day and completely forgot about the episode dedicated to Jim’s insecurities and doubts. Nice going writers.
And then. And THEN. They have the audacity to take Toby - ma boi TP - and make it so the only thing he can do to help is sacrifice himself for the cause, and then die. Yes, you heard that right. They kill off Toby for shock value.
What. The. Fuck.
Toby is so much more than just the support guy who dies to give the movie a dark edgy “deep” ending. He’s Jim’s best friend, the steady accepting rock that Jim is lost without. It’s not a happy ending if Toby’s not in it. Jim would be broken. But I guess that was probably the point, huh. “Oh no, one of the main chs died, this movie really does have consequences!”
Except it actually doesn’t, because they almost immediately scrap that. See, after Toby’s tragic death - which btw I legit didn’t see coming and was completely confused by. And this wasn’t shock or denial from grief, this was just plain scepticism and confusion. Huh? Ok so did Toby just… die? It’s not a fake-out for drama?
I just sat there for a few minutes waiting for the film to clarify. And then when I realised yes, they did actually kill Toby, I waited a bit more for the film to pull something out of its ass to retcon this. Which it did. And boy was it some retcon.
Time travel. Yep. You heard right, but I’m going to write it again anyway: They used time travel.
Now time travel on its own isn’t a show breaker. Hell, it’s used quite effectively in many stories and movies. Harry Potter PoA case in point. So time travel as a concept isn’t bad. It’s when the time travel breaks the timeline, already existing lore, character development, character integrity, stakes, suspension of disbelief, and makes you feel like nothing you watched mattered, that it becomes bad. Which RotT does. And it’s a dumpster fire.
Jim travels back in time, not to the moment before Toby’s sacrifice, which would have invalidated that sacrifice but might have been bearable. Not to the beginning of the movie, which would have been a bit weird but bearable. No. Go big or go home right? He goes all the way back to Trollhunters Season 1 Episode 1 ‘Becoming’. The beginning of the fucking series.
In case you don’t realise what a colossal screw up this is, let me lay out the situation for you.
So, y’know all those characters you know and love? Y’know how you love them because you’ve seen them grow from idealistic normal kids to responsible and dependable badasses? Y’know how you put your time into watching 88 episodes and 1 movie? Y’know how you witnessed 34 hours of these characters learning and growing and interacting together? Y’know all the highs and lows, the tears and the smiles, the laughs and the cringes, the heartbreak and wholesome? The journey these characters, and this world, has taken? The moments and episodes and people and places you know and have grown to care about?
Well. Take all that, wrap it up really nicely with a bow on top, sign ‘My Childhood’ on it, and then just kinda… throw it in the trash. And then crush it under a trash compactor. And then light the resulting piece of shit on fire.
According to the writers and world and lore and canon, those 88 episodes? They don’t exist. None of that has happened, except in Jim’s head. It’s kinda like the ‘it was all a dream’ stories, but almost worse because that dream is going to happen again.
We know what’s going to happen. Doing it again will feel cheap and boring and flat. Those characters we like ‘cause of character development? Not there anymore. We’re stuck with the simple boring normal versions of them again. And we’ll have to watch them go through the same things as if for the first time just to get to the characters we like. Only it won’t be for the first time. And we’ll know that.
Why would we want this? Writers? Hello? Someone answer me, because I don’t know the reason myself! Why in the everloving shit would we ever want to retcon 32 hours of viewing experience, just to do it all. Over. Again. There is no reason. Because we don’t want to.
Hell, even Jim probably doesn’t want to! The writers made it so he still remembers everything, so do you know how much trauma this guy probably has by now? Let’s see:
Bular trying to kill him, Draal trying to kill him, Goblins trying to kill him, Nomura trying to kill him, Gladys trying to kill him, the Stalkling trying to kill him, lightning trying to kill him, Strickler trying to kill him, lying to his Mom, Golems trying to kill him, Gato trying to kill him, Angor Rot trying to kill him, Pixies being pixies, his Mom almost being killed, Aaarrrgghh being killed.
The Darklands trying to kill him, Nyarlagroths trying to kill him, Gumm Gumms trying to kill him, Dictatious trying to kill him, Gunmar trying to kill him, the Gruesome trying to kill him, Usurna trying to kill him, the Deep trying to kill him, Vendal being killed, Otto trying to kill him, Trollmarket’s citizens being killed, Claire almost killing herself. Claire getting possessed and trying to kill him, Draal being killed, Merlin trying to kill him, Jim killing his humanity, the sun trying to kill him, Morgana trying to kill him.
The Green Knight trying to kill him, Arthur trying to kill him, Guards trying to kill him, Aaarrrgghh trying to kill him, the Arcane Order trying to kill him, Jim trying to kill his friends, Merlin being killed, Jim being killed. Nari trying to kill him, Numora being killed, Strickler being killed, Archie and Charlemagne being killed, the world being killed, Toby being killed.
Yeahhh. He’s got trauma. He’s got trauma for days. Hey, you know what’s great for someone who has trauma? Putting them back into the traumatic situation and doing it again! I’m sure their mental health won’t completely crumble under the stress. This is going to go great! Not.
And that’s not even the worst part. Haha ohhh no!
The worst part - by FAR - is that this stupid garbage excuse for a movie not only forgets about ‘Unbecoming’ once, but twice.
During the bulk of the movie, Jim struggles with feeling like he can’t be a hero without the Amulet. During the end of the movie though, after Jim’s successfully time travelled to the writers’ heart’s content, Jim forgets the other major lesson of Unbecoming, the part about what happens if Jim isn’t the Trollhunter. Don’t remember? Here’s a friendly reminder from before:
“The whole world will go to shit, and in the end Jim is the Trollhunter, Amulet or not.”
Did you catch that first part? Ahem.
“THE WHOLE WORLD WILL GO TO SHIT.”
If Jim is not the Trollhunter, if he does not pick up the Amulet and stop the Bridge from forming, and kill Bular and Gunmar and Angor Rot, the whole world goes to complete, absolute, no holds barred, shit. And what does Jim do at the end of the movie, having seen in terrifying detail exactly what that kind of future is? Why, he makes Toby the Trollhunter of course!
I- I can’t. I just can’t with this movie. How-? Why-? Just why. Why do this? Jim, you remember what happened last time you refused the call, right? You- you do remember, right??
Killahead opens. Bular is still alive. Gunmar and the whole Gumm Gumm army is free. Arcadia’s population of humans is eaten alive. Trollmarket is overrun. There are Changelings and Goblins and all kinds of Darklands creatures everywhere. No-one can kill Gunmar because the Amulet is broken, which means no Eclipse Armor.
Merlin’s staff is most likely taken by the bad guys, since the Amulet can’t lead any GGs to it first. Merlin is crushed to death without waking. Morgana is freed. The Eternal Night is upon us. Humanity is eaten. The Arcane Order turns everything back to the Stone Age with no one to stop them. The Arkiridians land on Earth and are probably killed. There goes Arkiridian-5’s royal family. General Morando becomes Gaylen and battles the Arcane Order for ultimate supremacy over the Universe.
This is the Bad Timeline. Everything sucks.
Jim. Jim buddy. Buddy ol’ pal. Jimbo. Why in the everloving fuck would you do this? It’s official, I think the writers have amnesia. They forgot that whole episode, apparently it wasn’t there.
And wait a minute- who ever said Jim could give the Amulet to Toby in the first place? It’s not, like, really his choice? Sure he rejected it in ‘Unbecoming,’ but that was mainly Merlin’s choice to make Draal the Trollhunter instead of Jim to teach Jim a lesson. Key word: Merlin’s choice. Because it’s Merlin’s Amulet, and he chooses who the next Trollhunter is.
Why would Merlin choose Toby just because he sacrificed himself in the future? Toby is, no offence Toby, not a logical choice to be Trollhunter. At this point in the story he’s not very fit, doesn’t seem to want the kind of adventure Jim does in the first episode, and he doesn’t have any fighting skills.
It’s only Jim’s expertise in cooking that lets him live in that first battle with Bular. Toby doesn’t have cooking skills. He will die on the first night, and then the Amulet will choose Jim again, but this time he’ll have even more added trauma.
And let's put aside the plot relevance of how much of a horrifying choice anyone who’s not Jim having the Amulet is for a sec. Plot aside, Jim as a character would never in his LIFE give Toby the Amulet. Because it’s not just a glowing amulet with cool armour and a sword for someone who’s worthy.
It’s a burden.
It’s a burden and a responsibility. It’s a lifelong commitment to putting others first. To making hard choices and having to live with the consequences of them in the aftermath. To giving every part of yourself, to sacrificing everything you are, so that someone else can be saved. Two worlds on the Trollhunter’s shoulders. Human and Troll.
That weight is something Jim has not wanted so many times. He’s admitted or complained or sighed or yelled that sometimes he wants to get to be a normal kid, live longer than high school, not worry about someone trying to kill him or someone else all the time.
The Trollhunter doesn’t get that luxury. Rule number one: Always be afraid. The Trollhunter can never stop being afraid. Their whole life from this point until DEATH is dedicated to this destiny of fear and hunting and protection.
Jim, who cares for and loves his best friend as a brother, would never ever push that kind of life and responsibility onto Toby and call it something good. The sole reason Jim went back in time at all was to save Toby. There is NO universe in which Jim willingly and happily then takes Toby’s life and shoves him into the path of Bular, and Strickler, and Angor Rot, and Gunmar.
And the icing on the fucked up cake is that the only way Jim managed to kill Gunmar was by turning into a troll. By giving up his life as a human teenager with a human family. By becoming a species with a lot of instincts and traits most others would label as monster. By giving up his life in the sun. By giving up part of his humanity.
Jim would NEVER force Toby into having to make that kind of choice. And I am ashamed of the writers who thought that he would.

Hi What were the Most Heartbreaking moments for you not counting Rot ofc
Hi! Let's see (btw I'm also not counting 3Below, I didn't connect with it at all and didn't feel a thing lol)
Of course, SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Draal's death, definitely. Draal's one of my favorite characters, I fell totally in love with him and I was crushed by this. The whole scene of Jim going to touch his face when he finds him, and then Angor asking why's protecting a human and I just– UGHHH I JUST WATCHED THAT EPISODE AGAIN AND I'M SENSITIVE.
Tumblr media
"What am I, Blinky?" "When I gaze upon you, do you know what I see? I see a champion. A friend. A son. A magnificent son" I don't know if it counts as "heartbreaking " bUT IT MAKES ME CRY SO MUCH I CAN'T, I'M EVEN CRYING JUST FOR WRITING IT. This episode and the one before are heartbreaking for me. Jim sacrificing his humanity to destroy Morgana and Gunmar, changing not just his appearance, but everything he does in his day to day. We saw how excited he was when he came back from the Darklands, going to school, even seeing Steve and doing homework, and now not only can he no longer do all that, but he can't go out in the sun, can't eat human food, has to get used to a new body, with new strength and needs, can't experience life as he used to. It's a fucking lot for a sixteen year old. Also the scene in the bathroom itself, as I saw someone mention here, seems to imply so much a suicide, with his family trying to knock down the door to stop him from making a mistake, I just- I just can't. (Also this edit destroys me).
Tumblr media
The first time I watched Aaarrrgghh!!! turn into stone I couldn't believe it, and then when Jim decides to go into the Darklands alone and everyone is calling for him and he says "I can't lose anymore of you". Pain.
The whole situation with Barbara when she distances from Jim because she knows he's lying breaks my heart, because even though Toby's a big support for Jim,and now he has more people with him, his mom is the number one person in his life. And I can feel him hurt for being so far away from him.
Troll Jim going berserk and becoming human again. Okay, this is more angry heartbreak than sad heartbreak because I love Troll Jim (I love his design so much omfg). I hate it because of the same reason S3E11 pains me. He relearned how to live for what, a few months, and the he had to change back against his will? I fucking hate it. Also, yeah, it's painful because of Claire's reaction (well, Jim's almost death at the end od Trollhunters It's also heartbreaking, but I miraculously didn't cry).
Merlin's death. Not for him (actually, fuck him) but because of Douxie's reaction. We see throughout the series how Douxie's done everything to help him, please him, make him proud. We know he's his savior, and probably the most important person in his life.
I'm sure I'm forgetting several, but these are the scenes that come to mind the most. Also, I wanted to talk a little more about the last one, but I need to refresh Wizards first lol

I'm just gonna go on a rant for a sec don't mind me-
1. The fact that they put Steve through BIRTHING SEVEN KIDS is so traumatic for him only to reverse everything and basically make it so they never existed was so wrong.
2. Changing the timeline for Toby to get the amulet makes zero sense like bro dosen't need the amulet to not die.
3. Jim kept all his memories anyway and has all the training and experience he needs to take down all his enemies but still decides to give up being the trollhunter? And don't get me started on how it was his 'Destiny' to be the trollhunter with multiple episode dedicated to him literally not being able to give away the amulet yet he just let's Toby find it and everything is okey dokey?
Honestly I can rant about so many things wrong with the movie for eons but I'm not going to because I'm too angry about it.
Trollhunters, 3Below and Wizards was one of my fav ever series and to have it all ruined by a single movie is just so infuriating. The writers destroyed and entire franchise and I will always be angry at them for it.
Anyways here's a pic of Steve, Aja and the kiddos cause depspite the uncanny valley feels about the human hair I think they are adorable.
