Wanted to draw some the dark Links.
Dark in OOT was done so dirty though.
I'm pretty sure OOT Dark's pallet is meant to be 100% black but, that's boring. So I made him have some variation to his tunic and stuff.
I swore I thought TP Dark's skin was well, darker but the cover it's this pale blue??? 🙃
Personally I think the darker grey skin contrasts better with his white hair but whatever...

Thinking about how Twilight Princess runs with the idea of Link being good with and gentle around animals. Dude is a farmhand, the local wildlife all knows he's the Wolf and are happy to help him.
The game makes an explicit comparison to Link applying his farming skills in combat.
The game has major segments around teaming up with Epona for the horseback missions.
His quest would have been cut short had it not been for the animals trusting him as someone to help them while they save him in the forest temple considering you need their help to navigate the temple and fight the boss.
It's easy to forget that Link's love and gentleness toward animals is one of his major strengths that carries him through Twilight Princess.
Link will summon Hawks, he has the power to talk to animals, team up with Monkeys, get info about the city from the pets there, I love it.
It's easy to focus on all the dark elements of Twilight Princess, but there's a lot to appreciate about Link insisting on spending time playing and talking with a bunch of cats.
TP Link is a strong and honestly ruthless dude not above using dark magic to save the day, but he's going to make sure those bugs all make it to the ball, damn it.
The game made that wild backstory interloper cutscene, but it also took the time to change Link's facial expression so he smiles when he picks up cats and dogs like they're babies.
There are several characters who draw attention to Link's sharp, ferocious eyes like a beast. But then Link will also get hit on by a chicken.
Shame the game didn't make a sidequest with you and Epona since you can talk to her, but just as well. This is one of my favorite Zelda games for a reason.

I have a question for the Zelda fandoms, is Ganondorf a potterer? Does he like to do pottery? Would this explain the "hero's" drive to smash pottery? (this is where the true grudge comes from lol) As someone who is a potterer. I could totally understand that Gannon would start cursing the kingdom of Hyrule out of pettiness. (idk maybe the pottery is cursed or something.) Imagine Demise and all the Ganons in a therapeutic pottery session. Taking pride and joy in their craft only to then dread the eventual comically large stampede of links. The eternal cycle of pettiness. heheheh may- shattered recreation.

MORE lore time :DDD apologize in advance this is kind of long :/
When Link died in Oradon Spring Ordona didn't bring him back, she resurrected the Triforce of Caurage(or whatever makes all these boys act and do heroy things) so the time between it gaining life and it getting turned into a wolf the Triforce of Caurage was the goodest most righteous good boy there was. Then when it was pulled into the twilight infected area(don't remember the proper name) and turned into a wolf the Devine Beast was born and overpowered it taking over Link's body and forcing it back to its nonsentient state, creating Wolf(Later known as Wolfie) and Beast. Wolf is the half that controls their wolf body, and Beast is the half that controls Link's body. They both possess and feel Link's memories and thoughts but Beast feels them more vividly as he has the hylian body. Even with a hylian body the Devine Beast is still a wolf and views the world through the eyes of one, he does not lie or get envious or power-hungry as people do but he also doesn't have the empathy or kindness of people, if you die you die, he will not help or harm or care about people unless he has a reason to, because of Link's memories he views Oradon Village(Manly Rusl, Uli, Colan, and unborn baby) as his pack so he cares about and loves them.(Later as his quest goes on he does befriend Link's friends from the game)
Because he views Oradon Village as his pack he sets off(TP Link's journey)
As he aided Midna in getting the fused shadow, then the mirror shards, the Divine Beast started to get slowly corrupted by the dark magic.
He and Midna also fall in love through the journey, and he thinks they are mates and are gonna stay together forever cause, wolves, they mate for life.
When Midna shatters the Mirror of Twilight she was originally going to leave Beast behind because she didn't want to take him away from his family. But in the last seconds of the portal closing she changed her mind cause she loved him and couldn't live without him, but because Beast took One Single Step Back out of shock when Midna told him he wasn't going with her she couldn't reach him in time and the portal closed separating them forever.
Also when the mirror shattered a ton of tiny pieces of the mirror embedded themself into Beast's skin, the only reason he didn't turn into a monster like Yeta did was because with all the dark magic already corrupting Link's body he was already technically a monster.
So Beast goes back to living Link's life, he's upfront about how he is not Link from the get-go but even tho the villagers are sad about the loss they welcome him home anyway. As Beast is not Link, Illia and him don't get 'back' together.
Over time the Fused Shadow and Mirror Shards 'corrupted' Link's body, merging it with Wolf's.
Beast grows wolf ears and tail, wolf eyes emerged below the hylian ones, his feet warped to be more wolf-like and he grew declaws, and wolf teeth grew in front of the hylian ones(they retract like Toothless's :D), he had more muscles in the skin around his lips so he can pull his lips back like a wolf, and he can open his mouth farther than a hylian can.
The people of Oradon Village didn't care or mind his new look or eating habits(He eats monsters), they were very receptive as it made the monster population in the area drop significantly. But hyrule is a very religious country, Zelda and the Sages included.
Once they got word that the Hero of Twilight was 'corrupted' by dark magic Zelda sent soldiers to retrieve him, they would attempt to remove the dark magic, and if they couldn't it would be best to keep him close(Keep your enemies close and all that). They couldn't remove the magic, so they conveniently chose to inform Beast that the Hero of Hyrule served the Queen and that he should stay in Castle Town to better fulfill that role.
Originally Beast was allowed to visit his home and travel the region, but the Sages managed to convince Zelda and the people that he was a 'religious matter' and would be better cared for under their supervision, they then barred him from leaving the castle. Cut off from his food supply and anyone who would listen, Beast began to starve.
After not having any monsters to eat for quite a while Beast collapsed into madness for a short time and Wolf ate someone. When Zelda and the Sages found him they were horrified, Zelda wanted to figure out why he had done this(legit no one listened when he said that he needed to eat monsters). But because he was under the care of the Sages they had the final say and locked him in the deepest part of Hyrule Castle's prison, only being taken out a few times to show proof of life and hyrules might.
-
Dark was created by Hylia to serve as a physical representation of the dark and evil parts of the heroes, he would fight them and then they would win and accept their dark parts and it would make them better heroes (in theory)
When Dark inevitably failed in this task(The heroes refused to acknowledge their darker sides) Hylian would cast him back into the void, leaving him in pain as his body slowly healed itself until she needed him to fight again.
He's also fully conscious between the fights, unable to do anything for hundreds to thousands of years waiting for the goddess to bring him to the realm of light so he can get his ass handed to him again.
Dark has fought almost all of the heroes and failed his mission every time. When he was pulled out of the void to fight Beast he was shocked to find someone who already living with his dark parts and didn’t need Dark’s aid at all(He was sent around the time Dark Link appeared in the manga)
This piqued Dark’s interest, this was the first hero to do this(while they were alive at least, Shade figured it out but that was like 300 years after he died) so Dark watches Beast's journey and doesn’t go back to or inform Hylian of what’s happening, at this point he toying with the idea of rebelling.
So when Beast was locked away, after a while Dark broke him out, he wanted to get to know this strange hero and he couldn’t do that if he was in prison(he 100% did not have a crush on him that would be CRAZY)
Because the Sages never check on Beast he can go back to Oradon Village without fear of them dragging him back, a least for a while, and when he learns that Dark doesn’t have a home or anywhere to go he invites him to go with him, and Dark accepts(Dark is fully rebelling against Hylia now, having no intentions of going back or serving her again)
Dark lives with Beast and helps him at the ranch, and over time(a couple of months or so) they fall in love(And I, mean really in love they're down bad)
Around this time Dark was thinking about getting some revenge and Beast was more or less on board, the people of hyrule had done nothing but harm him, and Hylia had done nothing period. But they were both happy and content with their lives and swept the thought under the rug pretty quick.
Hylia eventually catches on that Dark had been lying to her and wasn't doing his job so she snatches him up in the night and casts him into the deepest part of the void where the remnants of Demise's army is locked away.
(like the story of Prometheus)Dark was torn apart by the monsters only for his body to heal so they could do it again.
(also side note, time in the void moves differently so Dark gets tortured for at least a hundred years while only a couple of months pass for Beast)
now consumed by rage and hell-bent on getting back at Hylia Dark breaks out of his prison and takes some of the monster's essence with him to form his army of black-blooded monsters.
because Dark was wreaking havoc across time, Hylia called the chain together and they recruited Beast. Beast doesn't really care, but he's a noble creature and knows that killing tons of people isn't good so he agrees to help the chain(he knows that Dark is causing this BTW)
Random tidbits:
Beast can make himself look like a normal hylian and does so around the chain because he doesn't want the ✨drama✨.
The chain thinks that Beast is just a normal hylian and knows nothing about him being a monster, wanted by hyrule, or that he's not Link, he is not lying to them about this he just doesn't feel the need to correct them.
Four was the closest(living) hero to accepting his dark side because of the colors and Shadow.
Sky is the farthest from accepting his dark side(I don't even know if he fights dark just go with it :P
this song is very Beast and Dark core, it just so them <3 just ignore the first like half of the song lol

"Alighting the Darkness" by OneWingedSparrow for @dubiiousfood
This is my Loftwing Letter for @dubiiousfood, for the event hosted by @zelinkcommunity ! I hope you like this TP Zelink fluff! <3 Main Tags: Twilight Princess, Post-Canon, Married Zelink, Fluff without Plot Summary: Following the events of the Twilight, Zelda comes to realize how Link places light wherever she needs it. Read on AO3 Reblogs are appreciated! ~ The populace of Hyrule could perhaps say that they knew a “time before Twilight, and the two times thereafter.” Though most Hyruleans had been unknowingly turned to spirits during the curse over the kingdom, and, were therefore oblivious to the atrocities committed by the Usurper King Zant, they were nevertheless aware enough that, in the past, there had first been a time of grim foreboding; then, a time of great fear; and at last, a grand time where the great fear was graciously extinguished.
Queen Zelda, however, dwelt upon a different timeline. The time before Twilight, and the two times thereafter, mattered not nearly so much as these:
The time before Link, and all time thereafter.
~
She saw her Hero first in his accursed form of a blue-eyed beast; and, even in the darkness cast over the castle, everything about the wolf before her seemed to gleam. The iron shackle clinging to his leg, the grinning fangs escorting his growl, even the artful patterns streaking his dark fur with a lighter shade. A snarling predator stalking into her chamber should not have been a source of encouragement, but Zelda could sense the spirit within the flesh, and her weary eyes smiled faintly under her hood as she watched him stride towards her.
You are the light, she told him within her mind, as she removed her hood and his growling instantly ceased. The foretold, sacred light Hyrule desperately needs.
She beheld in him the Hero chosen by the gods. She foresaw in him the Hero destined to bring Hyrule back into the light, as a careful goatherd would direct his flock out of the storm and safely into shelter. In spite of her gifted Wisdom, however, she did not perceive in him the Hero chosen to guideherback into light as well. Such an epiphany revealed itself only during their future marriage.
~
Rebuilding the castle was a lengthy endeavor. While the structure was not demolished entirely, the brutal clash between Midna’s Fused Shadows and the demon beast Ganon left several stones unthroned. While the construction crews travailed the necessary renovations, the queen and her fiancé spent much time outdoors, in the quiet courtyards where pink and yellow flowers still dared to bloom, ever defiant towards the evil that once shadowed them.
Verily, Zelda might have found superior productivity in her study, where her paperwork was not at risk of being spied on by scouting ants or swept away by the teasing breeze. Even so, she chose to eschew her old habits. Her productivity might have lessened outdoors, but her motivation only increased. After all, how could she not be delighted by the golden-bodied beetles Link presented to her with a flourish, or the merry tunes he played for her on whistlegrass when no one else remained in earshot?
In the courtyard, with his subordinates standing vigil, Link never needed to be on constant guard, to uphold his duty as her appointed protector first and foremost. When they would travel Hyrule, of course, checking in on each province, he shouldered his responsibility with grave focus, standing tall as both the Hero of Twilight and the Captain of the Hylian Knights. But here, under the oak trees and the dappled sunlight, where the windchimes laughed and the stepstones wandered—here, as the beetles spread their wings and buzzed away from his open palms, and the blithe melody of the grass summoned a hawk to cheer a chorus—here, with her, he could be simply Link, grinning and teasing to make her smile even while she worked. It felt quite like a forgotten childhood come back to greet them, Zelda thought, or perhaps a bright tomorrow welcoming them anew.
~
A castle is a fortress first, a sanctuary second, and a home last of all. The larger a window, the more accessible an invader’s point of entry. Thus, many long corridors were illuminated only by braziers, their warmth spaced apart by the ghostly fingers of drafts ever haunting the stone walls. Over her lifetime, Zelda’s eyes grew accustomed to the enclosed dim; Link, however, had a newcomer’s keen eye for all improvements that could be made.
“It’s dark in here,” he said once of their bedchamber, as he scrutinized the curtains and ran his hand over the thick, embroidered fabric. “Does the brown color please you?” “It keeps out the sun,” Zelda replied, but her words suddenly sounded strange. She wrinkled her brow, and, stepping next to Link, reached out, tugging the two curtains away from each other. The day was overcast, but a grayish glow whispered into the room, gracing their boots with a shy, soft brightness.
She glanced at her husband. “How do you feel about ivory?”
~
From that moment onward, Link’s transformations of Zelda’s once dark world became all the more apparent. For the first time, she noticed the multiplication of candles around their dining table—most of them scented cheerfully with pumpkin, transported all the way from Beth’s Sundry. She counted the vases of bright-colored flowers strategically positioned around the Great Hall, like devoted soldiers standing at attention, and knew only one person who would trek so far into the forest to collect such particular, elusive species.
Her favorite of his transformations, however, was when Link commissioned the court artists to paint not a portrait of himself, as most royals would, but rather, a mural of the pastures of Ordona. The grass in the painting practically dripped with morning dew, and the circular horns of the goats glittered like fairy wings; a brilliant dawn broke through the dark woods beyond the flock, and spilling sunshine over the tranquil field.
That vision alone would have rendered the painting wonderful; but Link’s directions went further, and the artists happily delivered.
In the foreground stood a figure, facing the dawning sun—black cloak slipping from her shoulders, while the wind swept through her hair.
“Do you like it?” Link whispered in her ear, the day his surprise was revealed.
Only one thing would I change, she thought at first. Where are you in this lovely story?
Yet, when she turned towards him to ask, fierce, bright blue eyes caught hers, and she saw for a moment in him the wolf who once brought Courage to her gloom.
Enlightened, Zelda smiled.
“Of course,” she said, and cupped his face in her hands, to lose herself in his gaze just as the woman in the painting lost herself in the powerful sun.
You are the light...my light...as always.

Since I didn't dress up for Halloween, I thought I'd share my fave LoZ photos from this year's Con when I cosplayed as budget Skyward Sword Link. It was my first time going, and I completely forgot to pose in-character because I was so excited to be there and see my blorbos IRL 😂
Ramblings about each photo under the cut:
TP Zelda was the first Zelda cosplayer I saw and I lost my mind when I saw her 😂 I excitedly called, "Zelda!!! Can I take a picture with you!!!" and she replied in the sweetest voice, "Of course, Link!". I was grinning from ear to ear.
By the time I took this pic, I had visited the crafts room and scribbled a drawing of SS Zelda with the caption "Have you seen my friend?!?", which is what you see me holding. I walked around holding it high in hopes I would find my Zelda. I didn't find her, but I found this adorable TotK Zelda among the merch booths!
The korok was the first LoZ cosplayer that I saw and her outfit was so delightful to look at! She did a little twirl, showing me all the clever details. And the little pillow she gave me to hold was so cute!
These brilliant young lynel and bokoblin cosplayers first caught my eye when my con friend and I stopped by the prop repair room to hot-glue the blade back onto my Goddess Sword (said friend had dropped it and it immediately broke 😂 that's what I get for buying it at Goodwill). They were repairing their own props and I didn't have the chance to approach them, but as I was leaving the con, I was able to snap this pic. Such cool kids!
Not too much to say here. I came to the weapons booth, I saw the Master Sword, I fangirled.
While going to get lunch, I spotted this Dark Link waiting by the bathrooms for her friend. I admit that maybe it wasn't the best situation to ask for a photo, but I was so excited! Thankfully, Dark Link graciously let me take some action shots.
I'm hoping to go to next year's con! Hopefully I can scrounge enough money to invest in 3D-printing my own sturdy, sword by then 🤞

Linktober Shadow Day 6
Shadow Beast
The Twilight Princess fan in me really came out on this one huh? I blame the sleep deprivation. We never quite addressed the effects of the Twili Magic on Twilight and how it's only sheer force of will and the fact he's so darn kind, Midna's influence and Time teaching him the Song of Healing first being the main factor in making sure he doesn't fall huh? Even more so than the One Cutscene. We also need to talk more about the fact we technically kill Midna's people and how by the end of it all Twi is so changed by the Twilight Realm who's it's own can of worms that, much like Time he can't quite go home as himself me thinks, as a treat to myself
Mostly Twilight x Reader, this goes out to all of the folks who never quite recovered from Twilight Princess and the fact we never got that sequel (I mean it gave us BOTW and TOTK and Wild, but at what cost?), but can be read as Link x Reader either on the platonic or romantic.
Don't think there's any warning this time but might edit later if needed.
Actually yeah there is one warning
TW:
References to body horror typical to Twilight Princess, though I recommend not reading it I'd you're squeamish period.
Even after so long, you and Twilight could still remember the beauty and solemnity of the Twilight Realm, with it’s zircon skies with clouds of trapped fire and rains of viper obsidian.
The silence of the infection upon the realm of light broken only by the echoes of the howling elegy of the Twili and Interlopers who came before creeping over the land like rot and wither over flowers, the lament of the lost spirits of the people and animals of Hyrule falling over your spirit like a shroud, a shared hymm from two worlds reality had been twisted, only both of it’s princess, one filled the luster of empyreal sorrow in her mind and one with the scorch abyssal fury in her heart knowing to see the reflective tragedy befallen to their people. With Link as the one who restored the memory of what once was in both worlds as divinity and calamity sang in his bones and you a witness to the restoration of harmony to the discordant symphony, the two different songs of light and shadow refusing to let go of either of you in an eternal duet.
(Once touched by magic, it shall never leave the one if holds onto Twilight may have been the one with the Beast in his soul, with the howl of a wolf, the bite of shades in his veins and the lament of innocents taking precedence over anything purely because he learned how to silence the whispers of the one’s who made a grab for heaven’s throat and we’re pushed in the cracks of reality for their prideful vánitas even as he could taste it in the back of his tongue, twining around his ribs and overgrowing into his shattered mirror heart like vines, flowering with the divinity and eternal nature of the Hero’s Spirit, already having the hunt of the Fierce Deity in it’s veins and the remains of cursed divinity welcoming the new aspect merrily so he could bear it. The song of the innocent wrongly punished among the sinners rang into your mind, scratched at your skin and dug it’s claws around your throat, chocking you with sorrow and regret, more willing to leave gouges than to let go of someone’s who’s looked into the reverse side of the sacred realm and wept with grief for it’s people and the curse of it’s beauty.
It would never leave you, Link or Zelda, who learned who love the darkness the way Midna did, madness and unsightly delight and all.)
While the people of Hyrule merely became trapped as observers at best, if they were lucky, Midna’s raging grief and resentment quickly became obvious, once she revealed that rotten Zant had done to her and her people, twisted into a new form, distorted in body and trapped in mind like the animals and beasts of Hyrule, their pain driving them in becoming feral attack hounds for the usurper, their howling screams as much sorrow, wailing in an attempt to let their agonized, tortured souls to escape from it’s mouth, a futile attempt to flee from the strain of reality forgetting their true form in favor of Zant’s twisted design, of being used as sentient canvases for cruelty and ruthlessness, of their will being stepped over in favor of corrupting recreation.
Of how it only didn’t quaff down at Midna’s mind because of the nature of her ephemerality, fully beloved by the Realm of Darkness, of how she loathed him for it and wouldn’t wish her fate of that of her people’s on any living or dead soul, once she came to love the Realm of Light through Zelda’s sacrifice.
Which was why, when you saw three of the victims of the telltale twisting from darkness utilized with the intent to drive one insane, a familiar looking plate of stone engraved on the remains of ashes from their identity, the curling of distorted, solid darkness making crooked mishapen manes, bent out of shape from their too long torso and long, long arms adorned with twitching, deformed claws, you feel very justified in way your blood froze, holding onto Wild’s arms and yanking with all you had so his shot will miss, his yelp of surprise swallowed by the bone cracking, blood curdling screech from one of the beasts as a Skyward Strike grazed it’s petrified flesh.
You feel something warm drip down your ears, taste the promise of violence and the cry of lost souls on the back of your tongue and swallow it down as the memory of the Twilight Realm attempted to bite and crack your ribcage to quaff down your heart, to devour it bones and all, calling out in desperation, “Don’t! That’s a person!”
Sky freezes, as still as a statue, Legend curses the heavens crimson in a way you are so glad Wind isn’t around to hear as he retreats Twilight snarls, the wolf in him revolted and disgusted, you wonder if the Twilight is singing in his mind too as he restrains himself from reaching for the crystal as nails just a tad too sharp invite droplets of blood to one hand, grimm as a graveyard “We need to get them together anyway, felling just one won’t be enough.”
You grimace, releasing Wild, keeping your eye on the Shadow Beasts and another on your group, pointedly not mentioning the twitch in Four, amethyst clouding his gaze and the prism of his eyes turning gray with memories you and Twilight both knew all too well, of the grimace in Time’s otherwise stony countenance, you’d wished to avoid bloodshed of whoever was turned against their will, but you and Twilight both knew that might not be possible, death, unfortunately, might be the greatest mercy you can grant these poor souls.
(The Twilight is harmonizing in your ears, jeering, you feel the Interlopers insanity and the Twili’s lament on your teeth. As lovely as it could be cruel, the merry feeling upon meeting, the sorrow at a parting.
If you ever see the Shadow, you might just try indulging the echo by offering it’s blood as tribute. You'd make it hurt. The fact it learned the spell used to deform reality in such a way was cruel and vile.)
“Legend, how is your magic?” shoots Warriors, analyzing, calculating, it snaps the purple back into Four’s gaze, brings his mind back to focus as he reaches into his inventory for his Moon Pearl, Twilight is circling the beasts with single minded purpose, herding them together and prowling as he would as a wolf, Wild thankfully listened to your warning and had switched from the more destructive Flame and Lightning Arrows to ice ones. It doesn’t contain them for long but it gives a few precious seconds to strategize.
Legend catches on, switching to the Ice Rod on one hand and grasping his own Moon Pearl with the other, Sky has another Skyward Strike ready, but doesn’t release it, you switch from your sword to accepting a Magic Rod tossed at you from Wild, “Good enough.”
You breath in shakily, the symphony of the Twilight Realm has quieted, more lament than anthem as it’s Hero steps back, returning to your side, he nods grimly, “... Then, let’s end this quickly.”
You know your will boys will do their best to heal them, and failing that, you hope that they’ll hear the requiem of the Twili rather than the lament once they’re at peace, that they'll find some form of threnody.
It is a horrible thing, to be forced to die as a beast.
#linked universe x reader#linked universe twilight x reader#We really need to talk more about how the Twilight Realm sticks with Twilight and how it's magic never really leaves him#Heck I also want to know what it was like learning to turn into a wolf on his own. I bet that it was quite the process#friendly reminder that Time Twilight Midna and her people can all shake hands over identity and technical body horror#And how the Twilight Realm also likely has it's form of sentience due to the duality of both people like the Interlopers and the Twili#Something something how the difference between light magic dark magic is more about how willing much each reality changes you#and how Twilight more than anything and anyone who was with him on his journey would embody that fine line#Also the conflict between not wanting to kill the people that remind you of your old friend and the echoes all you have left of her realm#and knowing that their fate is so darn awful that death is a mercy#The reason Reader sees the Twilight as they do is because the dark magic latched onto them via association and Twilight's fondness#Maybe I'll elaborate on that later idk lol#Also the reason Dark Link knows the curse Zant used is both because of his nature and a reference to the TP Manga if you know you know#Hero's Shade mauls Zant in it. It's arguably the best thing in any manga I am begging any people who like Twilight and TP to go read it#summer writes linktober shadow 2023#summer writes#I could go on an entire essay about the relationship between the Realm of Darkness in each game and the Realm of Light and magic in loz#but I doubt anyone would want to hear about it lol

A 3-sentence-fic collab with @bellecream for @zelinkcommunity Zelink Week 2023 day 5: by a thread.
----
The massive wolf growled at Zelda—a languid oscillation shivering its charcoal hackles, wrinkling the white muzzle stained with vitriol from the moblin splayed dead at the clearing’s edge; a paw stepped, soft, creeping toward Zelda, the unprecedented silence in this hollow of the woods amplifying her uneven breath, her shirt’s rustle declaring her hand's shift toward her weapon.
The music returned as skin met hilt, yet unlike the haunting melody which had drawn her here, the upstart song recalled the dawn twittering of birds, the joy of two spiraling in celebration of life to come—the wolf’s eyes widened, their clear blue now visible, its angered rumble dissolving in a high whine, its pinned ears and bent back such unmistakable submission they stayed Zelda’s hand; she didn’t dare glance at the strange, boy-shaped sapling with the flute in its hands, didn’t dare question whether the new song would repeat as the wolf slunk to her feet.
It lifted Zelda’s wrist with a flick of its nose and closed its jaw around it, tugging with a low plea—it evoked a a Hylian voice (a man’s voice), more so as her face neared its, far closer than any wild animal would have allowed, their eyes locked, a visceral impression driving a gasp to her lungs and a fumbling hand to her belt pouch; it emerged with the Moon Pearl held in her palm, pressed swift to the creature's body, and as the soft fur twined through her fingers began to recede, its pace barely perceptible by touch and not at all by sight, all doubt vanished: the wolf was Link clinging to his true self by a thread.
