Follow @srilanka.traveling --- Why is it that our generation (millennials) prioritise travel? ✈️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s a reoccurring trend that millennials will save money to take a long, budget friendly whirlwind backpacking trip across Europe or South America over buying a house or starting a family because it’s a life that we don’t identify with. We spend our money on enriching cultural experiences in remote parts of the world instead of investing in a 401k. Even while we are struggling to make the next paycheck we’re thinking about new places we want to explore and new cultures we want to experience. 🌎 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But why is that? To post on social media? Yes I’ll admit there is some truth to that, our generation doesn’t know how to unplug but we equally post on social media to open peoples eyes and minds to the different cultures out there, to discover the world and share experiences worth travelling for, experiences that enrich our souls. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We travel to learn, to connect, to experience moments beyond the cubicle. We travel to bridge the gap between cultures so that we can better understand each other and realise we aren’t so different. We travel to collect experiences not material things. We travel because we grew up in a generation that wants to make a difference. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And yes that all may sound selfish... but so what? We ARE selfish - say it loud and proud because it’s a good thing. ‘Hidden in the Fog’ - Gais, Italy

‘It’s easy to see that the area of South Tyrol or ‘Alto Adige’ used to be part of Austria for long, namely until World War I. Both German and Italian are widely spoken here but one thing was outstanding; the difference between the Italian and German names of places here. They are not a translation of each other but seem like entire new names! After doing some research I found out that fascist Italy under Mussolini was extremely against Austrian influences in South Tyrol. During his reign, he prohibited teaching German and German surnames had to be ‘Italianized’ . This might be a good explanation of the extreme differences between the names of places all the time. Another fun fact, according to the owner of the hotel I stayed in ‘Gais’ is one of only two places that is called the same in both languages.’
