i love that this entire show hinged so much upon one singular scene, a throwaway line - it wasn't me, it was ignacio! lalo didn't send you? - and they managed to make both characters so impactful and essential to everything, and their fates so intertwined (even though neither is present for the others' death, both are culpable in the others' death!), that they are spectral presences in breaking bad, and within jimmy's mind. and i love that lalo's introductory scene tells us everything. to nacho, you're gonna die. it was like a prophetic sentence laid across him, but nacho got the agency and choice to make that curse his own, to make it matter. about himself, he said, it's gonna be like i'm not even here. and for everyone else, it will be! walt and jesse will never hear of him except in saul's panic that they don't understand, gus won and can continue with his plans for revenge. he is buried underneath the emblem of greed and destruction, side-by-side with a man he murdered, and the world will not know.

except, for jimmy and kim, nothing will ever be the same. lalo was there. they have to act like he wasn't. they have to pretend that he isn't a lingering shadow, just out of sight, the guttering of a candle flame. nacho transformed so many things he'll never see in another story, and lalo transformed this one. he was never there, and he will never leave.

their presences can never be avoided. they linger, in blood and smoke, in barrels of acid and money. nacho blooms unknown in the desert under the open sky, and lalo rots away unknown in an airless tomb, but both feel symbolically necessary to everything that follows.
